SCDL does not charge to check out library materials. Due date receipts are given at every checkout. However, if items are not returned or renewed by the due date, overdue fines will accrue. The library does not sell nor give its list of account holders or email addresses to other organizations or groups.

Internet Access

All Stark County District Library locations provide free Internet access to all ages. Printing costs may apply. Filtered and unfiltered Internet access is available. If you wish to temporarily bypass the filtering software you must enter your authorized library barcode and have parental consent if under 16. All SCDL Branches provide computers with Internet access and word processing. Main Library has a Technology Center with over 20 computers with Internet access and word processing.

Renewals

You may renew by telephone, online at www.starklibrary.org, or at any SCDL location. Some library materials may not be renewable if reserved by another patron, Book Express, or if renewal exceeds the maximum number of renewals (2) permitted.

Mobile Services

You may place holds on library materials at any library location or you may place holds online. You may choose how to be notified, whether by email or phone and at which SCDL location you wish to pick up your hold.

Returns

All SCDL materials may be returned to any Stark County District Library.

Interlibrary Loan

ILL is a free service to borrow library materials from other libraries outside the Stark County District Library system.

SearchOhio makes public library items available to the communities served by the libraries of Akron–Summit County, Cuyahoga County, Cuyahoga Falls, Greene County, Kent Free, Louisville Public, Massillon Public, Mentor Public, Portage County, Reed Memorial, Rodman Public, Stark County District Library, Toledo, Wadsworth, Warren– Trumbull, Westerville, and Youngstown. The SearchOhio portal allows direct, online requesting for residents of Ohio and delivery of books and other library media within a matter of days.

Director’s Message

Dear Reader, In December of 2009 the Stark County District Library’s Board of Trustees approved service reductions in order for the library to balance its 2010 budget. These reductions are broad in scope and impact nearly every area of library service. They are a result of many months of research, discussion, and analysis. In this edition of the Stark Scene you will find a revised schedule of service hours at our libraries as well as bookmobile stops. Dramatic changes in our funding at the state level have called for dramatic changes in our level of service. The good news is that last fall the Institute of Museum Kent Oliver and Library Services chose to recognize SCDL as one of Executive Director, the top libraries in the United States by awarding us the Stark County District Library National Medal. This recognition was followed by Library Journal’s award as one of the top Five Star public libraries in the country. These awards are a result of our library staff who are dedicated to developing and delivering programming and services tailored to meet the library needs of our communities. Early in 2010 the library will embark on a third round of strategic planning. Never in the library’s history has planning been more important as we attempt to serve when there is more need for our vital service than ever before. It seems that public libraries are always asked to do more with less. More often than not they are up to the challenge.

Changes in Services and Hours

At its December 2009 meeting, the Stark County District Library Board of Trustees voted to make changes in services that would help to close a $2 million budget gap when compared with the library’s 2009 approved budget. The library anticipates a total operating budget for 2010 of approximately $12 million, when compared with more than $14 million in 2009. “We have been faced with a very difficult budget situation,” said Kent Oliver, executive director of the library. “The choices we were forced to make were difficult for the library and the community. We have committed to maintaining our core programming in literacy, education, and job skills support. We have also committed to maintaining our levels of technology, so that we are able to continue to provide our customers with access to information. We believe that the changes we have made will make this library system and the services it provides sustainable into the future.” The difficult choices included permanently closing the Community Center Branch in the “Peel” Coleman Community Center as of December 30, 2009. The Southeast Canton neighborhood that was served by the Community Center Branch will now receive a weekly bookmobile stop from 2:15-3:30 pm on Fridays. The library is also in negotiations with the City of Canton to provide programming at the Coleman Community Center. In addition, all library locations will be open for fewer hours in 2010. Major changes are that libraries will not open until 10:00 am, city branches other than Main Library and North Branch will close at 6:00 pm, and only the Main Library and Perry Sippo Branch will be open on Sundays. New library hours will be effective January 18, 2010. See page 2 for details and new hours. Negotiations with the Greater East Canton Community Development Association made it possible for the East Canton Branch to remain open at this time. In addition, 12 employees chose to accept the library’s retirement incentive package, six from the bargaining unit and six from exempt staff, and will retire effective March 2010. Their retirements will reduce the library’s payroll and benefit expenses. In addition there were further layoffs of library staff in January 2010 as well as reductions throughout the operating budget including substantial reductions in the materials (books) acquisition budget to meet balanced budget requirements.

Perk Up Your Knowledge in 2010

Monthly Book Sales Return in 2010 Used book bargains will be plentiful once again at the FOL’s monthly used book sales. As usual, most of the book sales will be on the first Saturday of each month from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The two exceptions will be July and August when the sale will be on the second Saturday (to avoid the holiday weekend in July and the Hall of Fame Festival parade in August). The book sales are located in the FOL book store at the north end of the Main Library’s parking lot. In addition, there are used book offerings in the library’s McKinley Room on first Saturdays of the month when that room is available. Also the FOL always has books for sale in front of the FOL Office/Gift Shop.

The FOL has lined up another interesting series of perks for your enlightenment and enjoyment in early 2010. This speaker program is free to FOL members and just $2 for non–members. All of the programs are in the McKinley Room of the Main Library and begin at 10:30 am with coffee at 10:00 am. Tuesday, February 16 – Leslie Heaphy, associate professor of history and Honors Program Coordinator at Kent State University Stark, will speak on “Finding the Lost Generation,” about the 1920s including commentary on authors of that era, such as Gertrude Stein and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Monday, March 22 – Richard Haldi, Diebold retiree and history buff who volunteers at the William McKinley Presidential Library and Museum, will recall the history of Canton’s Aultman– Harter Estate. His presentation will be based on his book Where Presidents Walk: The Late, Great Aultman–Harter Estate. Richard will include his personal memories of Richard Haldi the site where the Canton Memorial Civic Center and Cultural Center for the Arts are now located. Monday, April 26 – Rochelle Kramer will relate the “History of the Hunley, A Civil War Submarine.” You will learn of the heroics and fate of this eight–man Confederate submarine as it tried to break the Union blockade of Charleston, SC in 1864. FOL Announces New Leadership for 2010–11

New officers for 2010–11 and three new board members have been announced by the FOL. Elected as officers for the next two years are: Darlene Drage, president; Penny Marshall, vice president; Sally Whiston, secretary; and Janet McLean, treasurer. New board members are Carolyn Dick, Roberta McGovern, and Ted Harvey. Roberta and Ted are former board members who are returning for a third term following an absence from the board. Penny and Carolyn are former staff members of the Stark County District Library. The new officers were announced and new board members were elected at the annual meeting on January 19. Guest speaker for the evening was Sherri Brake–Recco, author of the book, Haunted Stark County: A Ghoulish History.

Stark County District Library Wins Highest Honor for Community Service

was truly the best of times and the worst of times at the Stark County District Library. During the summer of 2009, we experienced a reduction in funds that eventually impacted our staffing levels, service hours, and number of branches. This past October, good news lifted spirits for both the library and our customers when the Stark County District Library was named a recipient of the 2009 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor for library community service. This award is given to only five libraries and five museums annually, and recognizes the Stark County District Library's commitment to community service. Our focus on serving our community in diverse ways, such as our attention to early literacy, played a part in being an award recipient. Throughout the summer of 2009, the library ran a 30–second commercial featuring literacy tips and two animated children, Devon and Sierra, known as the Born to Read Street Team. Parents and caregivers were encouraged to visit their library and foster the love of reading early in a child’s life. Our partnerships with three organizations, Lake Local Schools, Plain Local Schools, and the Stark County Park District also helped our library stand out among the competition. We share building space with all three, providing campus atmospheres at the schools and a fantastic place to enjoy at Exploration Gateway, which we share with Stark Parks. We consider all three partnerships to be success stories. Yet another reason we received the award – our focus on the arts. When Canton’s focus on the arts became more prominent, the Stark County District Library noticed a trend of customers of all ages enjoying art–themed programs. Our Madge Youtz Branch recognized the need for a formal Art Club geared toward young people and offered a broad–based introduction to visual arts. Grant money from The Stark Community Foundation and from Arts in Stark help support this

innovative program. The Little Theatre Troupe, Annual Youth Poetry Contest, our housing of the Mayor’s Literacy Commission, and the Canton City Schools General Education Degree Program, and our sponsorship of the Local Government Leadership Academy in cooperation with Leadership Stark County were also factored into the judging. Our job fairs, job and career workshops, and computer training classes were noted as well. The National Medal proved what Stark County knew all along– that our library system is among the best of the best. Thank you for helping us stay true to our mission of Inspiring Ideas, Enriching Lives, Creating Community.

Literacy Corner

In 2009, the Stark County District Library Foundation funded the construction of a literacy corner in the Main Library’s Children’s Department. This special space includes child-sized furniture, books, and toys to enhance a child’s pre-literacy skills. The six skills a child needs to master so that they can start school ready-to-read are: print awareness (or loving books), print motivation (using books), vocabulary, storytelling, sounds, and their ABC’s. Visit a library story time or talk to a librarian about ways you can help your child succeed.

The American Library Association’s (ALA) Celebrity READ Campaign has been an internationally recognized program for more than 30 years. Classic posters like Mickey Mouse, Bill Cosby, and Elvis have been joined by the Jonas Brothers, Eva Mendes, and Rachael Ray, to become one of the most recognized literacy campaigns today. READ posters encourage literacy by providing images of popular people enjoying good books. ALA’s Celebrity posters have now been joined by local Canton Celebrities: Congressman John Boccieri, Library Executive Director Kent Oliver, musican Michael Stanley, Repository columnist Charita Goshay, the library’s Little Theatre Troupe and Friends of the Library, and Library Board of Trustee member Wanda Young.
