STAROOT JOURNAL NATIONAL OCTOBER 2016

STAROOT ARTICLES Editor’s pick of the week: About half of South Africa’s urban population lives in townships and informal settlements, accounting for 38% of working-age citizens. This is according to research done by the World Bank Group in 2014. To understand the challenges that township entrepreneurs currently face, you would have to look at the challenges faced in townships generally, as well as their history.

Modise gives an example of the Bandwith Barns in Cape Town, a shared office ecosystem. The concept has been expanded to the township of Khayelitsha and will soon offer the area’s entrepreneurs access to an office space from which they can conduct their business.

The township economy South Africa’s townships have always been a hive for entrepreneurial activity but the main challenge has been unlocking the potential in order to generate broader economic benefits.

The other issue Ismail describes is that of uncomfortable working spaces. Spaces which she says “are not well designed for the work that business owners do”.

Tashmia Ismail is the head of the Gibs’ inclusive markets programme. And First National Bank estimates Soweto’s consumer spending power to be about R5 billion. Township revitalisation In an effort to solve some of the challenges experienced in South Africa’s townships, the government has introduced a number of interventions to support township SMMEs and entrepreneurs, and to help them flourish. The hope is that these township enterprises will be sources of employment, and help bring the township economy into the mainstream. Premier Makhura, in his state of the province address, said the province would contribute to the township economy revitalisation by supporting township enterprises and SMMEs in the province. The Gauteng Provincial Government announced that it would allocate approximately R300 million in support of township enterprises and cooperatives over the 2015/16 financial year.

Skills gap Ismail also points to the issue of business skills and a lack of business literacy and education. She says many entrepreneurs lack fundamental skills required to run a business. This can be helped by observing and becoming involved in the value chain of established larger businesses and learning through interaction . Another factor highlighted by Modise, which she says affects the chances of success of township enterprises, is the over-saturation of certain business sectors.

Is entrepreneurship the answer? Entrepreneurship is also considered a key driver for job creation and economic growth, with the National Development Plan stating that 90% of jobs will be created by small and medium businesses by the year 2030.

“There a lot of businesses in food and beverages”, she says.

Kasi-to-kasi survey results showed that 14% of participants had businesses in this sector. Followed by agriculture and forestry at 13% and construction (11%), clothPressing challenges ing and textiles (11%). The reason for this she says is that And for even those entrepreneurs who are already in these are the industries with low barriers to entry, low business the challenges continue. capital requirement, with little skills required. STAROOT JOURNAL NATIONAL OCTOBER 2016

You just need to believe in yourself, get started, don’t give-up and enjoy the rewards. -by Smangele Tshabalala

I

f you live in the real world like the rest of us, there will be times that the world seems like a tough place to live. During this time you will be down on your luck. It will seem like the only vocabulary that the client has leant is NO. When you go to interviews, you will get declined. When you wake up in the morning, you don’t have anything to get excited about. Every moment of the day seems like an upward climb. Furthermore, this mountain you seem to be climbing does not even have beautiful views to console you or to take your mind off reality. Things just seem to be very bleak and there seem to be no end in sight. No sunshine to be seen left or right. As some people are known to say, same different day. Fortunately for most of us, this time does not last forever. While it last however, you will need to get through the day. If you have an interview to attend, you have to put your best foot forward. Put the mountains and clouds behind you. You must not only focus on the setbacks. When you only see and talk about your problems that you’re facing, then you will be negative and stressed and you won’t put your best foot forward. You need to focus on those things that will improve your circumstances. The people you interact with are not interested in the rain but they are largely interested only in the sunshine that you bring. You still need to work and you will be expected to perform. It is during this time that you will need to pick yourself up the most. You need to motivate yourself, come what may. You have set yourself goals and you have to achieve them. Of course, you may be tempted to just go through the motion, pretend to be interested, pretend to be working… but you cannot pretend for long. It may also seem easier to just procrastinate and find excuses for not putting in the effort to accomplish your goals. You can’t do that too long however. It will soon catch up with you. Living a life that is not authentic is not to be celebrated.

Sometimes all you need to do is to realistic about what you face and then look for realistic solutions. Be honest to yourself about your abilities and what you have, then start from that moment to improve your situation. You have what it takes inside of you to be a success. But you have to start with positive thinking and positive action. If you do nothing…. Nothing happens. Find out what “free” thing motivates you…then do it daily. “ The people you interact with are It may be your favorite song…on repeat. It may be talking to positive people you admire. Laugh at not interested in the rain but they yourself… a lot. Stay focused on your goals and don’t are largely interested only in the give up. See yourself succeeding. sunshine that you bring. ” You have within yourself what it takes to get there. Find the discipline to get started and the resilience to stay on cause. After all, you were born to achieve great things and everything you need to achieve these great things you already possess. You just need to believe in yourself, get started, don’t give-up and enjoy the rewards. http://kasibiz.co.za/?p=8117
