THE JOZI FILM FESTIVAL 2019 The festival began in 2012 and was initially created to provide a platform for local filmmakers and reach audiences under serviced by traditional cinemas. The festival began accepting entries from around the world in 2014 and is now firmly established as one of the sub-continent’s leading film festivals. The Jozi Film Festival is proudly independent, and a supporter of independent films. We support and showcase both upcoming talent and veteran filmmakers. Our festival takes place each year over a fourday period at various venues around Jo’burg our cornerstone for the last 8 years has been The Bioscope Independent Cinema in Maboneng. We always open with a local film and the festival culminates in an Awards event where the best films in each category are recognized. We rely on a voluntary jury of filmmakers/film industry people from SA and around the world to judge our entries. Our categories: Best Feature Film, Best Feature Length Documentary, Best Short Documentary, Best Short Fiction, Best Student Film (SA only), and the Audience Choice Award. Awards are given out to both local and international films in these categories. This year we have added two new categories: Best South African Director and Best South African Music Video. This will also be out third year partnering with Discovery Networks to bring a competitive category that offers a cash prize – this year’s call is for Real Stories by Real People About Real Lives. We’re looking for 3-5 minute films that will be broadcast on Real Time (DSTV 155).

STAROOT JOURNAL CONTRIBUTOR ARTICLES THE VOICE WITHIN YOU YOUNG PERSON...

e’re the deacon of the virtue. It is through us that future presidents, lawyers and doctors are trusted to emerge, and yet we get failed by the system. We’re always encouraged to study and be elite, even the great Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela died believing in education being the prerogative of the rich. We’re living in the modern world where there’s no longer different educational syllabuses for the opposite sexes. Our mothers, particularly, were unfortunate for being baby machines and slaves to look after the house and children while their husbands went to work. But it was understandable; that’s how they were taught and mostly because the importance of education was overlooked. Now they’re teaching us to transcend their backgrounds, and they believe we could achieve that through the power of education.

Is it ever going to end? I mean, these ransacked promises, are they ever going to end? Before the youth could be judged for selling itself to drug abuse, prostitution and throwing themselves to elders who are old enough to be their parents, I wish we could all take calculated steps in retreat and point the four fingers to ourselves as we do with our index fingers to the youth. It’s not that we’re quiet because we don’t see what’s happening; we all have eyes to see, ears to hear and minds to contemplate ideas for a better South Africa, a better future and a better world.

Seeing the chaos and calamity in the world, we need to say something. Because when we’re not saying something, we are saying something. See, thing is, whether we know it or we don’t, but we need each other to But how when employers hire on the basis of experiunite and press our foot to the ground and accept that ence? How are we to have one when we are fresh from enough is enough. I’m saying this in the spirit of huschool? Aren’t we supposed to work so that we could manity, meekness and Christ-like love. possess one? I’m sorry, but it doesn’t make sense; at We might not pull the trigger, but with silence, we least not to me. might as well have. Amongst the many other factors, unemployment rate is one of the fundamental problems that we encounter as the youth across the globe, and statistics show that 55% of the youth in South Africa is unemployed. We know good people, that this makes the rich richer and the poor, poorer and yet every after five years, we have to vote! Don’t we vote for change? Well, I don’t know about you, but I do vote for change.

We claim to have the “voice” and the “freedom of expression” because of what transpired on the 27th of April, but we might as well not celebrate the day if we’re not liberated psychologically. There are only two kinds of people in this world: those who makes things happen and those who watch things happen. What kind are you?

F

ew people are lucky enough love their 9-to-5s, and more and more people are finding themselves doing something else on the side, either to add to their income or to feed their passion. Sometimes, those “side hustles” start to feel more and more like “the real thing,” and suddenly these people are dreaming about running a business of their own. Sound familiar? If you’re one of the thousands of people dreaming about turning your side hustle into a true business, you’re not alone.

keep yourself on one straight road each day. Digitising your work can help, too. According to Accenture, companies that use cloud collaboration tools with their teams improve productivity, have greater clarity about what’s going on in their business and save money. When you first start out, it can feel silly to keep documents in a shareable cloud space (like Google Drive, DropBox or whatever option you like best), but you need to have the structures in place so that you’re organised and ready for the time if/when you hire a team to support you. This is a good thing to play around with before you quit your main gig. Having the tools and processes you know work well for you ready to go when you make the switch can make ramp up time easier. It’s long hours, it’s always being “on,” its wearing too many hats, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. So, how do you successfully turn your side project or passion into a prosperous business? What are the steps? We all want the “1, 2, 3 and voila, here it is, a company of our own,” but realistically, how can we make it happen? I can only speak to my own experience, failures or what I like to call “directional pivots” and successes. There have been a few true catalysts that have helped me turn my two side gigs into full-time gigs.

Early on, business organization and strategizing is a huge component of success. You’ll need to limit stress and create as much efficiency and ease as possible in your daily systems. This could mean scheduling things carefully, or using free software to make your work more effective. I try to divide the week into days assigned to different businesses tasks. Try as best you can to not switch back and forth between your different focus areas within the same day. Going back and forth between tasks that are not related is inefficient and breaks focus. Give your brain a break and

The number of new startups and small businesses has dropped dramatically in recent years, nearing a 40-year low in 2016. The landscape has gotten tougher, which makes being an entrepreneur scarier. Turning a side hustle into the real thing is not easy, and I’d be lying if I said I loved every minute of it. But, just as with most other big decisions in life, there are always lessons to be learned no matter what happens. Be thoughtful, take smart risks and see where your “side hustle” can go.

bout 50km outside of Cape Town lies the beautiful town of Stellenbosch, nestled against vineyards and blue mountains that stretch to the sky. Here reside some of South Africa’s wealthiest individuals: all male, all Afrikaans - and all stinking rich. Johann Rupert, Jannie Mouton, Markus Jooste and Christo Weise, to name a few.

Julius Malema refers to them scathingly as ‘The Stellenbosch Mafia’, the very worst example of white monopoly capital. But who really are these mega-wealthy individuals, and what influence do they exert not only on Stellenbosch but more broadly on South African society? Author Pieter du Toit begins by exploring the roots of Stellenbosch, one of the wealthiest towns in South Africa and arguably the cradle of Afrikanerdom. This is the birthplace of apartheid leaders, intellectuals, newspaper empires and more. He then closely examines this ‘club’ of billionaires. Who are they and, crucially, how are they connected? What network of boardroom membership, alliances and family connections exist? Who are the ‘old guard’ and who are the ‘inkommers’, and what about the youngsters desperate to make their mark? He looks at the collapse of Steinhoff: what went wrong, and whether there are other companies at risk of a similar fate. He examines the control these men have over cultural life, including pulling the strings in South Africa rugby.
