STAROOT ARTICLES Editor’s pick of the week: ach year on Heritage Day, 24 September, South Africans dig deep into their wardrobes and fish out their traditional attire to celebrate their unity in diversity. Some citizens, however, see this as a day to meet together with friends and undertake what has become a unique South African tradition – buy plenty of boerewors for a braai. Formally known as Shaka Day before 1995, the day is a national holiday and gives South Africans a chance to pause and take stock how their diversity can contribute to building a better South Africa.
E
Heritage Day There are different ways that South Africans have come to celebrate Heritage Day. Some wear traditional attire at work – usually on the day before Heritage Day – and some gather at stadiums for a day of celebrations which includes music, dance and speeches by local leaders. Tsonga women adorn their familiar xibelani attire, a waist-high skirt made of metres of cloth; married Zulu women wear skirts made of cow hide called izidwaba; Venda women parade in their colourful skirts called minweda; and Xhosa women distinguish themselves with their beautifully painted faces and head gear. But it’s not only women who showcase their flair for traditional fashion. Zulu men also embellish modern trousers and shirts (usually khaki trousers and shirts) with detailed designs and patterns which have come to be known as umblaselo.
“In particular, the NDP is concerned with securing a better future for young people through better educational and economic opportunities. “In isiZulu, we say: ‘Indlela ibuzwa kwabaphambili’. Before we undertake any journey we must remember where we come from and learn from those who have gone before us. “We dare not neglect our past. We dare not ignore our heritage.” Ramaphosa said Heritage Day is a celebration of South Africa’s “rich, proud and diverse heritage”. Although South Africans speak different languages, practice different beliefs and engage in different cultural practices, they are bound by a common African heritage. “This notion is reflected in the words inscribed on our country’s coat of arms, !ke e: /xarra //ke, which calls on diverse people to unite,” he said. Telling stories Heritage Day encourages South Africans to celebrate not only their own cultural traditions, but also the diversity of cultures, beliefs and traditions that make up the South African nation, according to Ramaphosa.
He said it is a day for citizens to tell their stories about who they are and where they come from “This day allows us to create awareness through educational programmes, dialogue and public engagements about the meaning and importance of our heritage.” But society is not static. As society transforms, so does In most cases the big occasion is the “official” Heritage heritage, said Ramaphosa, adding that as people do not Day celebrations where a top government official ad- replace what has come before, rather, they should enrich dresses masses of people in a chosen region. This year and enhance what they inherited. the official celebrations were held in Klerksdorp, in the North West province, where Deputy President Cyril While South Africa has made significant progress in changing the institutional barriers that previously divided Ramaphosa urged citizens to forge a united society. country, the quest for a non-racial society is far from over. Ramaphosa conceded that too many citizens “cannot live where they want, cannot pursue the professions they desire, and cannot achieve the standard of living they seek”. “We are still prone to stereotyping each other. We are reluctant to trust those who do not look like us or who don’t speak like us – or who do not belong to the same economic stratum. “The challenges of poverty, inequality and unemployment unmask the reality that there is much that still divides us.
‘South Africans unite’ Ramaphosa said South Africa has done quite a lot to unite all South Africans in the past 20 years, but should continue to strive to build “a nation of citizens that care for each other, respect one another and share a deep love for our country”. “We are building a nation that is proud of its national symbols, our flag and our anthem. They reflect our shared values and the principle of unity in diversity,” he said.
We are all too aware that our cultures, traditions and value systems are still influenced by the spatial, economic, social and ideological distortions of colonialism and apartheid”, he said. However, this reality is what should drive South Africans to forge a common identity, an inclusive nationhood and a better future. “This is a future where all people feel they belong, have access to opportunities and can develop their talents. It is a future where their quality of life will give them a sense of place, security, purpose and comfort,” Ramaphosa concluded. by Ndaba Dlamini

STAROOT JOURNAL CONTRIBUTOR ARTICLES Tomorrow starts today! Don’t wait to be scouted, get yourself on the field! ow many times have you heard the cliché “one day is one day”? And how many times have those one days materialized? You may be reading this with big dreams and goals that you desire to achieve but you just don’t have the time to work on them, the money to invest in them, the support from family and friends or maybe you aren’t ready to make them a reality. These are some of things that can be managed but we allow them to be obstacles to our dreams.
H
We live in a society where you cannot wait for someone else to tell you how good you are, it all starts with self. If you do not push yourself out of your comfort zone, you’ll never be ready. Your plans aren’t God’s plans. Where you are now (good or bad) may not be where he intended you to be but once you get comfortable, you are killing the inspirational part of the story of your life. Child of a nation, get up. There are plenty of platforms aimed to empower particular young people and you only have one responsibility; to expose yourself. If it has never been done before so let it begin with you. Even if the day had 30hours, we’d still say the hours aren’t enough. You will always have time for what you are passionate about, you will always make time for it no matter how busy you may be, and it is all a matter of priorities. If it means so much to you, you will invest your time on it even if it means going to bed in the AMs.
Picture of our contributor for this week: Karabo Dynamite Nyalunga Sometimes the vision is not clear, sometimes circumstances threaten the dream but it takes a really great person to believe in those threatened dreams and blurry vision, and that great person begins with you. Not everyone will understand your vision but if you are courageous enough to still stand by it and work hard, you will get the support you need from relevant people, those who’ll empower to achieve better. If you wholeheartedly love what you do, you’ll understand that it’s not about the money but about the vision and the passion that drives you. Be passion driven and not money driven because money comes and goes but the passion will forever grow stronger! Negativity will always be there of course but it’s only there to remind you that you are on the right track. Remember that dogs bark at a car that is in motion. Therefore what is it that you are doing today that will get you a step closer towards reaching your dream for tomorrow? “In order to succeed you must be willing to do today what others wouldn’t do, so that you can have tomorrow what others wouldn’t have” --Sanele Zulu-Article By: Karabo Dynamite Nyalunga

Marketing done right – The Creative Counsel’s co-founder breaks down 5 big ad trends that even SMEs can use. -by Noluthando Mcutha rand building is essential to the value and development of your business, and co-founder of The Creative Counsel, B South Africa’s leading and largest sales, marketing and advertising group, Ran Neu-Ner says how you do this matters. Speaking at The Creative Counsel’s “Expect the Unexpected – Cannes Findings” talk, Neu-Ner outlined the five important ways for brands to effectively appeal to their consumer. These are based on the prominent marketing trends Neu-Ner identified at this year’s Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity held in France in June. The eight-day festival brings together branded communication professionals from 100 countries, and recognises and celebrates creative excellence in marketing, advertising and other related fields. Some of this year’s big winners include sports brand Nike, Samsung Electronics, Ford Motor Company, multinational technology company Microsoft and energy drink brand Red Bull. Million dollar impact on a shoe string budget. While most of the big winners have multi-million dollar advertising budgets, in his breakdown of the most powerful campaigns and branding trends, Neu-Ner explained that creativity does not necessarily require deep pockets; and that while startups may not have the budget of multinational companies, they can still through creative excellence, achieve world class branding and connect in a real way with their customers. Here are the 5 big trends as identified by Neu-Ner that are being used by some of the world’s biggest companies, and the lessons startups can take from how they are getting it right. 1. Find a way in Neu-Ner says consumers are burdened with millions of products that are, for the most part, the same. When the brain experiences an overload of sameness, the consumer is unlikely to act, he says. To counteract this you need to create something that stands out says Neu-Ner. Think outside the box or as if there is no box as the popular saying goes. This is important because being unique makes it easier for the brain to notice and therefore that the product will elicit a reaction from consumers. How Orangina did it: Orangina is a oranges and citrus drink. This year the brand introduced the Orangina upside down can when they realised that consumers were forgetting to shake the beverage - which they advise is best enjoyed when shaken. This unusual way of presenting a canned product and forcing the consumer to flip it while simultaneously shaking it earned the brand much consumer recognition. 2. Make your way to the heart One of the most effective ways to connect with your consumer is by engaging the heart, says Neu-Ner. This can be successfully achieved through storytelling. Telling real human stories that consumers can empathise with, he says, creates a connection and evokes emotions that would otherwise not be felt through product stories alone. Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of BrightEdge, a digital marketing company, Jim Yu echoes this in his Huffington Post “Go Beyong Advertising and into Storytelling” article saying “creative storytelling can evoke emotions and generate strong personal connections to a brand, its mission, and ultimately, its products.” Neu-Ner advises against the use of product stories, saying they often fail to pull the heart strings of consumers as human stories do, and equally fail to create a pathway for a connection. How Extra Gum did it: In the “Extra Gum: The Story of Sarah and Juan” advert, the product is intertwined with a love story designed to tug at the heart strings. 3. Fight for a cause Neu-Ner calls this impact marketing. He says brands should be of good service and stand for a cause. The goal is to create awareness around a cause, to get people talking and ultimately, to jump on the wagon. How Burger King did it: To illustrate this point, Neu-Ner gives an example of Burger King’s “We Are All The Same Inside” campaign which was in support of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community. As part of the campaign, the hamburger chain served a limited “Proud Whopper” which was sold in a rainbow-coloured wrapper that is representative of support the LGBT community. The campaign, which was in conjunction with San Francisco’s 2014 Gay Pride weekend, went viral after attracting social media and media attention 4. Manage the role of technology Technology has become an important part of human life, however, the focus is now moving towards humancentric technology, says Neu-Ner. In other words, create a product that will serve or address a real human need. How Samsung did it: Neu-Ner gives the example of Samsung as having done this successfully. The electronics brand, this year launched “Voices of Life”, an application that connects mothers to their premature babies (who because of needing medical attention stay in hospital and are unable to go home) virtually when they cannot be there physically. The app captures the mother’s voice and heartbeat, creating a “womb-like” environment for the baby and though virtual, plays a vital role in the connection of mother and baby. 5. Cherish your relationships Good work relationships are essential to mutually pushing the envelope of creativity further and further each time with a common goal in mind. Neu-Ner suggests building relationships as partners as opposed to having typical client-agent relationships. http://www.smesouthafrica.co.za/16707/Marketing-done-right--the-Creative-Counsels-5-ways-to-effective-branding/
