FALL 2022 TIPS FOR FINDING THE RIGHT VENUE AND CHOOSING THE PERFECT PHOTOGRAPHER FOR YOUR EVENT FEATURING A FIELD TO VASE DINING EXPERIENCE METRO DETROIT’S EVENT PLANNING RESOURCE

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Events are back! 2022 has been one for the record books. People are excited to gather and celebrate. Businesses and families are entertaining more than ever, and guests are wholeheartedly enjoying themselves. We have learned to adapt and pivot at a moment’s notice. In these unprecedented times, we have emerged stronger and more resilient. We are planning more events – weddings, corporate affairs, fundraisers, bar and bat mitzvahs, and other milestone celebrations –we are energized!

Star Trax Events has been named as one of Crain’s Detroit Business’ 100 Cool Places to Work in Michigan. We love coming to work and doing what we love ... planning events.

We are proud of our relationships with local area vendors and are pleased to feature several of them in this edition of Plan It! Magazine, along with tips and ideas to help you with your next event. Look no further than this issue for suggestions on choosing the perfect venue, selecting a photographer, and even knowing how much liquor you will need when hosting a party. We’ve also compiled a list of local hotspots for out-of-town visitors, which we are constantly updating.

Many of you have told us how much you enjoy the ‘feature component’ of our magazine – it helps you put the “pieces together.” In this edition, we have expanded this section. Nothing makes us happier than knowing you found A, B or C here! You are in great hands if you choose your team of vendors from the experts in this publication.

We did not know what to expect this year, but I can clearly say it BEAT OUR EXPECTATIONS! Now more than ever, party throwers are planning ahead! It’s never too early to start planning and securing your vendor team! We are only a phone call (or email) away!

Choosing a venue is one decision that will have the largest impact on your event. Whether you’re looking for a one-stop, full-service event space or an unconventional, raw setting that allows for more decision making, creativity, and design, Metro Detroit has tons of options. Narrowing down your options can be challenging with so many event spaces available, and finding something that best suits your needs takes some advance planning. Understanding your vision, setting your budget, and knowing your audience can all help with this process.

WHEN SELECTING THE RIGHT VENUE, WE HAVE A FEW TIPS: CAPACITY AND SIZE

Too small and it will seem crowed; too big and it will seem empty and under-attended. Choosing the right sized event space will ensure that your event “fits” the venue.

CATERING

Look for a venue with catering options that suit your needs and budget. Whether it’s using in-house catering, choosing from a list of preferred catering options, hiring a caterer of your choice, look for something that works for you.

EVENT PLANNER

Working with an event planner will take the research and guesswork out of choosing the right site. Planners already have the logistics, capabilities, and pricing at their fingertips – eliminating stress and saving you time.

We have asked some local event venue managers for suggestions on choosing the right place for your occasion. Along with their recommendations, they have shared some insight and details about their specific venue.

When choosing a venue, it’s extremely important to check off all the boxes that are important to you. Will the facility hold the number of guests I am having? Do they have indoor and outdoor capabilities? Do they have in-house catering that will be able to provide all my requests? What rentals will I need on top of what is provided? Paradise

Park is a one stop shop - the fun is built right in! With over nine attractions, a state-of-the-art arcade center, an expert culinary team, TIPS certified bartenders and more, Paradise Park provides an all-inclusive event space. Our goal is to take as much work off the host so that you can focus on what really matters— celebrating your special occasion!

At the Diamond Center, all the essentials are included in each space and our in-house catering is top-notch. Our advice to someone looking for the perfect venue would be to ask a lot of questions and feel comfortable with all the answers. Let’s schedule a tour!

5 FIND THE

The perfect event starts with the perfect venue. It is always best to work with a space that has a designated event planner who listens, recommends, and most of all, responds! Make sure you pay close attention to what is included. There should be no surprises. Be open about your vision, plans, preferences, and your budget.

A PHOTO IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS

Photographs tell a story. They create lasting memories of what’s important to us and what we want to hold on to and share with others. Unlike food, décor, and entertainment, photos are forever! You only get one chance to get the right photos. Your photographer is your personal “historian” and will capture and record your entire event. Comfort, trust, vision, and artistic skill are all factors to consider when selecting your professional. Your photographer will spend most of the day and evening with you and your family - more than any other hired vendor at your event.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

When hiring a photographer, ask friends, relatives, and trusted vendors for recommendations. Read reviews, meet with the photographers, and follow up with questions. Large social media groups are not the place to ask for suggestions – everyone’s needs, vision, and budget are different.

HIRE A PROFESSIONAL

Don’t just hire the person with a nice camera who takes great scenery and vacation shots. A professional photographer has an eye for detail. The photographer should be knowledgeable about lighting, composure, and editing. He or she should be skilled in setting up great shots, gathering groups, and capturing spontaneous moments - all of which require training and experience. Real photographers have a website, reviews, and a social media presence. Ask to see your potential photographer’s web portfolio and samples of past work.

BE STRAIGHTFORWARD AND HONEST

Ask your photographer to describe their style. Share your wishes, vision, and expectations. The conversation should flow easily, and your personalities should mix well. If you are uncomfortable at the meeting, then this is not the right professional for you. Remember, this person will be with you all day and all night.

ASK ABOUT COSTS UPFRONT!

A professional photographer has made capturing memories their career – not their hobby. Ask questions and make sure you understand what is included in the photography price or package. How many hours will the photographer be onsite at your event? How will you receive your proofs – digital or hard-copy? Are there additional charges for editing and touch-ups? Does the price include an album? Think about what you want, and make sure everything is discussed and agreed upon, before signing a contract.

When choosing your photographer there are many things to consider - price, experience, portfolio, reputation, and talent. Personality, demeanor, and passion are just as important – remember, this person will be a part of your special day … and you want to get along well.

As photographers, our job is to capture all the moments of your event in a style that matches your vision. Not every photographer takes photos in the same way … it’s important that you find someone with whom you’re comfortable and who shoots in a style that suits you! If your photographer loves what they do, it will show in their images!

A good photographer will ask questions prior to your event so they know all your expectations ahead of time. Their goal is to be as unobtrusive as possible during your event – allowing you to relax and enjoy your celebration. At the end of the experience, you will have everything you wanted, plus more!

9

No matter how perfect and fun your event is, if the photos don’t turn out, you will not be happy! A photographer has one chance at getting it right and capturing the moments – there are no do-overs. Choose an experienced photographer. While creativity and innovation are important, skill and expertise are a must!

Photographers not only spend most of the event day with their client, but they also interact with their client both before and after the event, as well. Find a photographer who is pleasant, listens to what you’re looking for, and helps you make the best choices for you, your family, your guests, and your event. Choose a professional with whom you can connect and openly discuss your needs and expectations.

Be sure to ask for referrals and look at a photographer’s previous work. Ask to see real samples, not just Instagram and Facebook images. And don’t forget to discuss pricing, packages, proofs, add-ons, re-touching, editing, and how many photographers will be covering your event.

At the end of the day, when the decorations have been taken down, the entertainment has gone home, and the food and beverages are all gone, it’s the photos that will be with you forever.

PARADISE Park

aradise Park had its grand opening in August of 2005. This all became imaginable with the help of the owners’ two sons, aged 9 and 11 at the time, who just wanted a fun place to hang out. It took only 18 months of hard work and labor to make their kids dreams a reality.

Paradise Park was built on 10 acres of land and opened with a mini golf course, formula go kart track, Olympic grade trampolines, a 26-foot climbing wall, laser tag, and an arcade. As the years went on, Paradise Park has made substantial new upgrades to the facility such as the addition of new attractions, a full-service bar, and a stunning pavilion banquet center. This 5,000 square foot event space includes a full-service bar, built-in audio and video, large industrial grade ceiling fans, programmable lighting, cathedral style drop down walls, and an elegant outdoor patio with two natural gas fireplaces.

On average, they have hosted 400-500 events per year - field trips, community events with local non-profits, summer concerts, graduation parties, simchas, wedding receptions and more! With years of event experience came a deeper understanding of exactly what clients need when planning their celebrations, including a well-experienced culinary team, professional hosts and bartenders, and an event manager that will help guide families every step of the way.

metroDETROIT

We’re so lucky to have a city where old meets new; a city that is constantly rebuilding and revitalizing. Detroit is full of history and infused with energy. Whether you need an itinerary for your out-of-town guests or just looking for a day trip with local friends, our staff has created a list of some of our favorite things to do in metro Detroit along with a few “hidden gems” that you must visit.

EASTERN MARKET

Start your day at Germack Coffee, which is also the nation’s oldest pistachio roasting company. The market is open year-round on Saturdays (from 6 AM to 4 PM) with additional days during the summer months. Try a cinnamon donut from Shed 4, a perfect way to satisfy your sweet tooth. Afterwards, head to Division Street and check out the colorful murals that line both sides of the street. Eastern Market is full of art – no matter which way you turn, you will always find something new. Weekends at the Eastern Market are packed with bustling crowds of shoppers looking for fresh produce, flowers, art, while enjoying the live music and entertainment.

DETROIT

Whether you’re looking for a unique dining experience, want to admire architecture, or enjoy the outdoors (even in the winter), then Detroit is the place to visit. Well-known restaurants such as Oak & Reel, SheWolf Pastificio & Bar, Freya, Marrow, Olin, San Morello, and Barda provide an impeccable dining experience with great vibes. If you’re just visiting for a few days, definitely check out these gems.

There are also great chill spots throughout the city - like the YARD at Corktown - one of the newest additions to Corktown that houses hundreds of board games, axe throwing, a full bar, outdoor yard games, and amazing tacos served out of an Airstream trailer. Another great location (especially during the colder months) is Campus Martius - where you can ice skate in front of a giant Christmas tree or chill in the Cadillac Lodge, a large heated tent with leather couches, cozy chairs, blankets, snacks, cocktails, and an assortment of games to play.

FERNDALE

Downtown Ferndale has something for everyone. The restaurants and bars are each so unique in their styles and offerings. Try out the gourmet hot dogs and tacos at Imperial, Detroit-style pizza at Como’s, the unique and delicious sushi presentations at (the brand new) Tigerlily, or grab a board game and enjoy brisket mac and cheese and sliders from The Corner. Just looking for a good cocktail? Try out Valentine Vodka Distillery or The Art Novelty Company, a speakeasy-style bar with a great ambience.

Let’s not forget about dessert! Cookie lover? Try out Detroit Cookie Co. with their ever changing, always delicious seasonal flavors. Into ice cream? How about Treat Dreams, which offers a variety of classic flavors along with unqiue combinations.

Want to do some shopping? The Rust Belt Market has a variety of vendors that provide something for everyone. Detroit-style apparel, art, plants, metalwork, interesting artifacts - they have it all - we’ve never left empty handed!

13 PLACES TO VISIT IN

FARMINGTON HILLS

Take a stroll through mechanical history at Marvelous Marvin’s Mechanical Museum! Enjoy vintage coin-operated machines, macabre, oddities, unusual nostalgia, and the newest video game crazes. Admission is ALWAYS FREE and is great for all ages.

SYLVAN LAKE

Sylvan Table is an incredible farm to table dining experience. The grounds themselves are beautiful, as is the 200-year-old barn where you enjoy your meal. The food is so fresh and flavorful, and the stews are so comforting in the colder months.

We can’t wait to explore and try out new places in the upcoming months. Stay tuned - in our next issue, we will share our favorite new trendy spots!

Cocktail Trends Worth Raisinga Glass to.

Cocktail trends have come a long way in recent years with Mezcal Bar Pop Ups, CBD infused cocktails, and everything in between – this is one smoking hot trend that isn’t going anywhere! Drinking culture has evolved in a major way and we have found ways to incorporate cocktails into every part of our day. I mean, if you didn’t have a Mimosa flight or Bloody Mary Bar – did you even Brunch?

So what’s the big deal? Cocktails have been around forever, right? Now more than ever, restaurant/bar owners, event professionals and event hosts are striving to create instagrammable moments with a twist on traditional elements like presentation and flavor. With champagne dresses, funky glassware, smoke and so many new ways to make the traditional drink experience interactive and fun – the cocktail has become the star of the show!

Here is a guideline to help build your bar for your next event. A standard bottle of liquor is 750 ML (Fifth) and offers approximately 16 shots per bottle. Below is a list of LBW and recommendations provided by Bella Vino Fine Wine & Spirts, of what to order based on 100 attendees.

TRAILER EVENTS

Planning an event at a venue with no kitchen – NO PROBLEM! Meet Kristin Falconer and her event coordination team from Trailer Events (TE). Kristin’s business filled a major void in the Metro Detroit event world. Mobile kitchens were not only needed for restoration projects but were a welcomed addition into the private event space. Now, you can literally have a full-service food and beverage event anywhere!

Outdoor event, NO PROBLEM! You cannot imagine how popular their bathroom trailer has become. We were fascinated by the beauty and functionality of these units. With separate entrances for men and women, the restrooms have private stalls, stainless trim mirrored vanities, hand sinks with warm water, LED lighting, and ventilation complete with heating and cooling systems in place. The need for mobile bathroom solutions has been solved.

You hopefully have seen Trailer Events’ handiwork at the most successful tailgates around town. When your business or family is looking to create the ultimate experience at your favorite sporting event – one call and they will not only have a parking lot reserved by the appropriate stadium, but also a fully outfitted state-of-the-art tailgating trailer. These units are designed and equipped with a stainless-steel refrigerator, microwave, gas grill, generator, and a private restroom. The trailers also include a HDTV monitor with Bluetooth capabilities. When you arrive, the tent, tables, chairs, beverage coolers, and disposables will all be in place and ready to go. Need a caterer, that is easy too. Trailer Events is a one stop shop – GO TEAM!

Kristin and her knowledgeable staff have taken the stumbling blocks out of hosting events. Their mobile kitchens, specialty trailers, and executive restroom trailers can be used for any event, whether it’s a sophisticated corporate gathering or a backyard BBQ. Your search ends here.

TE is not only the leader in Metro Detroit for every high-end event trailer, but it has also morphed into a full-service event coordination and design firm – handling all aspects of event planning. As the needs of their clients grew so did their arsenal of rentals. From catering supplies and linens to tents and functional furniture (couches and chairs, coffee tables and more), they have everything you need to transform any space.

Trailer Events is fun to work with and is passionate about customer service and client satisfaction. No matter the size or location – Kristin and her team can handle everything.

What

Wear

When we think of planning a party, some of the first details that come to mind are the décor, catering, and entertainment. However, a big piece of the event is the fashion and attire for those hosting the event, as well as the guests. Pre-COVID, people dressed to the nines for many events. During the pandemic, things shifted to more of an athleisure style. This year, the fashion trends are a combination of both, sophisticated yet comfortable. Although people are beginning to forego the sweatpants as an option for a night out, athleisure is not going anywhere.
