Gratitude. We are grateful to the wonderful vendors and industry professionals who have trusted us to produce this magazine and highlight their businesses, showcasing all the talent right here in Metro Detroit. It takes a village to produce spectacular events – and we are thankful to have incredible people –both internally and externally.

Helping our clients build their team is how we like to begin planning each event… and this magazine has made that process easier. The contributors and advertisers are well-respected and are among some of the top businesses in their field. I can attest to their level of professionalism and customer service, and we are proud of the relationships we have built with these companies.

In this resource, we focus on topics and issues that our clients are always asking about. As experienced event planners, our job is to know the trends and stay ahead of what’s new. We strive to create events that excite and energize partygoers. From décor and cuisine to branding and souvenirs, we offer fresh and innovative ways to make events beautiful and memorable.

Included, again, is our section on ‘Featured Events.’ Our clients have expressed to us that they love seeing an overview of event highlights and pictures that tell the whole story. As always, these features include a list of vendors who, along with our event planners, create one-of-a-kind celebrations.

We love to incorporate stories with ideas that you can utilize – either at a large event or a small occasion at your home. A signature cocktail is a fun addition to all gatherings. Name one after your boss, include “His and Her” favorites at your upcoming wedding, or create a “family + friends cocktail” for your intimate party at home. This is a fun way to personalize cocktails, liquor, and the bar experience.

As with most industries today, technology plays an important role. Technology has impacted the events industry in a huge way. From CAD (computer-aided design), design decks, and 3D modeling to video mapping, virtual reality, and computerized lighting, hi-tech event planning and execution has become something clients now expect. alented designers and decorators are full of inspiration, originality, and imagination. The magic they produce happens behind the scenes. Technology has created instruments and programs to enhance and illustrate concepts in 3D, realistic images. Gone are the days of penciled in floor plans, paint color swatches, and magazines cut-outs. Today, creativity and ideas are presented through the use of technology. It’s important for people to know what goes into creating beautiful spaces.

One of the most important aspects of a creative event planner’s role is to make sure the client understands and approves of the designs before the work begins and event takes place. Technology has been a game changer in making that happen.

One of the biggest ways that technology has helped is using CAD (computer-aided design) mockups. Creative design teams are able to create a digital replica of the event space and décor, allowing clients to see exactly what they can expect. This helps eliminate any misunderstandings or miscommunications that can occur when trying to explain ideas through words alone.

EVENT

Design decks, which are essentially digital presentations of event design concepts, are also a valuable tool for communicating with clients. They allow creative artists to showcase different design options and layouts and make any necessary adjustments before the event takes place.

3D modeling and prototyping have also become a vital part of the design process. By creating a digital replica of the event space and décor, designers can test different lighting and layout options, ensuring that everything will be perfect on the day of the event.

The big moments in life deserve big celebrations. Mandell Display has been providing expert event production services since 1982 and in 2021 the company joined the Display Group collective.

hen I first started in the event industry, floor plans were created using PowerPoint presentations. They were not to scale, and we hoped everything we proposed would fit. Fast forward to 2023... floor plan software, like SOCIAL TABLES, grants us the ability to build scaled designs and 3D renderings, allowing our clients to really visualize a space. We can add actual furniture from our local vendors and keep track of all our rentals. This software enables all involved, from the decorator to the caterer, to have a realistic view.

We no longer have to say, “visualize this…” 3D renderings of our designs allow us to share every detail with our clients who want a real sense of walking into a space. Design software has enhanced the client experience tremendously.

Social Media Walls are all the rage. This can be done in many ways – one of the most common we have seen is by using QR codes where guests can scan and upload photos or messages in real time.

Event software also exists to make the registration process seamless. Guests can sign in, pay, choose menus, answer questions, and receive updates - all from one app.

The event space has been infused with technology across the board. Social Media platforms, alone, have helped shape and inspire our entire industry. We can easily look to other designers for inspiration. Photo and video sharing have influenced event trends and allowed planners to connect with industry leaders throughout the country.

WRAP YOUR DANCE FLOOR with your logo, brand colors, or phrases that represent your message. Carrying your team's brand throughout the room is incredibly important. Place custom messages on pillows, cocktail napkins, TV screens, and even bathroom mirrors. No area should be neglected - keep your guests immersed in your brand from start to finish.

INTERACTIVE ACTIVITIES draw your guests’ attention to specific areas of a room and encourage involvement. Pinball machines and arcade games help create interaction as well as décor for an 80’s Party. Casino games, giant foosball, pop-a-shot, carnival games, and hand spun cotton candy transform a space into a festival or carnival.

Offer healthy and diverse catering options –fresh juice bars, smoothie stations, a gazpacho bar with tons of fresh toppings, acai bowls made-on-site, or build-yourown poke bowls. Just remember to include something for everyone.

Event planners strive to create an impression at every turn. Make sure all five senses are covered and guests are graced with visuals and experiences that fuel touch, sound, scent, taste, and sight. Make the event one to remember!

We are always looking for new ways to enhance our events and, let’s face it, the bar is almost always the main attraction (at least it’s where most of your attendees will gather throughout the evening). 2023 is shaping up to be the year of elevating the drink experience. Specialty bars, flair bartenders, whiskey and wine sommeliers, drink flights served at guest tables (instead of the traditional wine pours), infused cocktails, and ice sculptures of life-size servers holding trays full of cocktails are some of the ways we have seen this done.

More and more clients are looking to explore new ways to highlight their bars creatively. Signs for the bar that read “Hit me with your best shot,” “Make pour decisions” or, for a sports themed event, the Wayne Gretzky quote, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take,” can be hung above or wrapped onto the bar. Additional ideas include caricature coasters, custom drink toppers, light-up beer pong tables, and custom cocktail napkins with fun facts highlighting the guest of honor or your company’s mission statements.

In addition to the custom bar décor, signature drinks can really set your event apart from the rest. Whether you are putting a twist on an old classic or creating your own mixture, this is a chance to let your personality shine! From the liquors, ingredients, garnishes, even the glassware and name, this drink can be all about you and your event. Create branded signage with your specialty cocktails to add to the visual effect.

Don't forget about fun non-alcoholic offerings so everyone can be in on the fun. We have spotted cotton candy toppers and rock candy sticks added as "flair." The small details make a huge impact. Cheers!

ou are a guest at the most perfect event. From the venue to the décor to the music selection, the ambiance has been spot-on. Cocktails, mingling, a fantastic dinner menu, and tons of dancing. What’s the final touch at the end of the evening?

THE SWEETS AND DESSERTS!

Cake served to the table is so 1999. Guests have been seated for dinner and the goal should be to get them up and moving, not serve ANOTHER plated course. Encourage your guests to be a part of the dessert experience by enticing them to enjoy their desserts at different locations throughout the venue. A wedding cake “station” is all the rage now; strolling dessert samples push guests to wander around the room; interactive dessert and sweet stations invite guests to socialize and experience new and fun treats.

Today, desserts come in all shapes and sizes, and range from basic cookies to intricate concoctions. Some party throwers choose desserts to be served to you only on the dance floor, so that the party never stops. Others hire a trendy vendor to create beautiful confections right in front of you – thus adding an interactive element to your event.

Hand-spun cotton candy, dipped and rolled ice cream on a stick, chocolate “shawarma” shaved right before your eyes, crepes, cinnamon churros, mini donuts, nitrogen-infused ice-cream cones, dessert sandwiches or cannoli’s... the list of sweet endings can be scrumptious and enchanting at the same time!

The addition of interactive desserts magnifies your guests’ experience and gives them the opportunity to sample “out-of-the-ordinary” treats. Traditionally, people think ‘sweet’ when envisioning dessert. However, dessert can be sugary and savory at the same time. We have witnessed magnificent grazing displays filled with elaborate fruits, chocolates, and cheeses. Add salted popcorn, flavored potato chips, or chocolate-dipped pretzels. Crepe Stations can include a savory touch too.

Don’t forget about the bar. Alcohol-infused treats like candy-flavored shooters, mouthwatering jello shots, vodka-infused popsicles, mudslides with Baileys whipped cream are fun additions for adult dessert. Tacos, sliders, or pizza along-side desserts is a great addition to a party where a lot of alcohol is being served.

Every gathering has a sweet component and typically is served closer to the end of the event. This “course” gives you the opportunity to wow your guests' taste buds one last time. Choose something delicious and memorable.

usic will set the mood and tone for the entire gathering, adding energy and momentum to the festivities. It’s as important as the food! The musical vibe at a 7:00 pm formal cocktail hour should feel different than the 9:00 pm after dinner musical set. Music livens up an event and encourages guests to become more relaxed and join in the celebration.

The best DJs know how to create the perfect playlist - mixing current and trendy songs with forgotten hits and golden oldies. While guests love today’s top hits, they also love dancing to songs that remind them of their youth! If you play all the fan favorites at the beginning of the night, you will run out of material that will keep the party going. A mixed playlist keeps a continuously evolving set of people on the dance floor - attracting different groups of guests throughout the entire event.

Variety is key, but reading the crowd is more important. While pop music is most often the “go to genre” for parties, playlists may need to change throughout an event depending on your clientele. It’s the DJ’s responsibility to be up-to-date on new music while knowing how to create perfect transitions from one genre to another.

METRO DETROIT'S UNIQUE NEW HOTSPOT

Detroit Axe was the first fully dedicated axe throwing venue in the state of Michigan, with three convenient locations around Metro Detroit. Each Detroit Axe venue offers twelve axe throwing lanes, axe leagues to join, and an experienced axe master to oversee and provide tips to staying safe.
