Letter from the Managing Director As I work at my desk, while the rain pours down outside, I can’t help but ponder over some questions that the art of filmmaking poses. How do we find the audience’ pulse? How do we make the best film? How can we make people sit up & take notice? This lands the maker & the artist in an important thought process. I realize, increasingly, as well, these same questions flood into the making of a magazine as well. What do our readers want? How do we bring the next issue out? How can we make people sit up & read our magazine? It’s all very exciting! I’m happy to say that first copy of Starz received a great response. A number of industry members have appreciated the idea of printing different articles in Telugu as well as in English. It feels wonderful to be part of all that I am. Letter from the Managing Editor The other day, I stole a few moments to enjoy some music. The season’s first rains were playing outside my window pane. Ah, what a feeling! The monsoon has arrived! Sridevi’s daughter in Mani Ratnam’s Direction? If the grapevine is to be believed, Sridevi’s elder daughter Jahnavi is all set to be cast as a heroine. The yesteryears’ diva was planning to introduce her daughter either in a high budget film or a film made by a big director. Incidentally, Mani Ratnam is planning to make a youthful entertainer in Telugu and Tamil soon, with star actor Karthik’s son as the hero. Will Jahnavi be the female lead? We’ll have to hear it officially for the confirmation.

Nayantara breaks down! On the last day of shooting her upcoming movie Sri Rama Rajyam opposite Balakrishna, the actress became too emotional, sat alone and cried before being consoled by the cast and crew. She doesn’t confirm the news that this will be her last film and that she is bidding adieu to tinsel town to get married to actor-director Prabhu Deva in August. But her actions certainly seem to indicate it despite her refuting the same.

Kajal Aggarwal gets superstitious Kajal Aggarwal who is making her Bollywood debut opposite Ajay Devgan with Singham, apparently is pretty superstitious. The actress feels that the color white is really lucky for her and that all the south movies in which she has donned the color in the introductory shot have been blockbusters. She conveyed the same to the makers of Singham who kindly obliged. We hope it works for you this time too!

Rampachodavaram to star Anushka Chaitanya Dantuluri, the director of Baanam is all set to make a tri-lingual film titled Rampachodavaram with Anushka. The movie will be simultaneously shot in Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam. The film is set in the year 1930 and will mostly be shot in Coorg, Karnataka. It’s about a brave woman who leads a band of fighters against the British. Mani Sharma will provide the tunes while the story-line is by JK Bharavi and the movie is produced by Konda Krishnam Raju.

Dhada on August 11 Naga Chaitanya-Kajal Aggarwal starrer Dhada is all set to hit the screens on August 11, while the audio is slated to release on July 21. Producer Shiva Prasad has revealed that the story is about a Telugu boy living in the USA and also that Naga Chaitanya will be seen in a mass role. Brahmanandam, Ali, Rahul Dev, Mukesh Rishi, Kelly Dorjee and others are also in the film.

Gabbar Singh to hit floors in July Pawan Kalyan’s much anticipated movie ‘Gabbar Singh’ is to begin shooting from July 25. This remake of Hindi movie ‘Dabaang’ will star Shruti Hassan as the female lead. Ganesh Babu who earlier produced Teen Maar with Pawan Kalyan is teaming up once again. Harish Shanker will be directing the movie, while Devi Sri Prasad will be composing the music.

Siddharth and Shruti Hassan off to Kerala ‘O My Friend’, starring Siddharth and Shruti Hassan has completed more than half of its shooting and is all set to shoot in God’s own country for the next schedule. Hansika stars as the second female lead. The movie is produced by Dil Raju, who has two debutants for his film, director Venu Sriram and music composer Rahulraj (who is well known in Malayalam cinema).

Sunil now busy as a Hero Comedian Sunil, famous for his punch-liners, is now a busy hero with 6 films in hand. He plays the leading role in all of these movies, some of which boast of big production houses like Suresh Productions, Dil Raju Productions and Super good films. He’s also set to star in a remake of the Bollywood hit Tanu weds Manu, opposite Tapsee. Starz wishes him the best in his endeavors!

Venky in ‘Ganga-The Bodyguard’ Victory Venkatesh has started work on his latest film – a Malayalam remake of the film ‘Bodyguard’. If the latest buzz is to be believed, the film is titled ‘GangaThe Bodyguard’. Trisha plays the female lead in this movie which incidentally, was also remade in Tamil as ‘Kaavalan’ with Vijay and Asin in the lead roles. Hope it achieves the same success in Telugu too.

Ritesh-Genelia to wed in 2012?

Aamir and Imran in Delhi Belly-2

After being just ‘good friends’ for a long time now, has the couple has finally decided to settle down? At a recent awards function, both were seen walking hand in hand, where even Genelia’s mom was present. If sources are to be believed, the families of the two have finally agreed to the idea of Hindu boy-weds-Catholic girl and to top it off, it’s going to be two ceremonies – one in the Maharashtrian style and the other in Catholic tradition.

In response to the huge success of Delhi Belly, Aamir Khan is going to produce the sequel to the same, which will be directed by wifey Kiran Rao. Once on the floors, this will be the first time both uncle and nephew shall star together. “The sequel will start with Aamir entering as a Disco Fighter and meeting the three boys,” added a source, making it a direct continuation of the prequel. We can’t wait to see how this turns out to be!

Hrithik’s Agneepath Look Revealed We all know that Hrithik has been reprising the role of ‘Dinanath Chauhan” in the remake of the 1990 Amitabh hit Agneepath and that he’s been working hard to get the right look. Karan Johar posted the first look of the actor on his social network pages and Hrithik seems to have gotten the look right down to the dot. He is seen sporting a super toned body, red band around his head and splashes of color all over. Set to release in January next year, the movie is directed by Karan Malhotra and also stars Priyanka Chopra, Sanjay Dutt and Rishi Kapoor.

While the Murder 2 lady wanted to have a concrete set career in Bollywood, the prince wanted to settle down; hence the split-up.

Virodhi Cast: Srikanth, Kamalini Mukherjee, Ajay, Kamal Kamaraju, Nagineedu Story, Screenplay, Director: Neelakanta Producer: Anil Meka Music: RP Patnaik

Acclaimed ad filmmaker Jayendra’s debutant movie has style and fabulous visuals. Each frame is a visual treat with an additional strength of showing minute details perfectly. However the problem with the movie is that it doesn’t have anything new to offer in terms of story or the treatment. The flashback is the backbone of the story, as it reveals the hero’s nature and the reason behind the change in his behavior. But the developments are too predictable. Many scenes seem to be redundant.

180 Cast: Siddharth, Priya Anand, Nithya Menen Director: Jayendra Sarma Producer: Satyam Cinemas Music: Sharreth

17

Neelakanta is back after a long hiatus and he has come up with a risky subject on Naxalism. Virodhi tries to highlight the good and bad in the fight against the system. It moves with a slow pace in the beginning and picks up its momentum in the second half of the film and ends well. The audience’s patience is tested at times but the film’s strength lies in its performances. Srikanth should be commended for taking up such roles, though his role lacked conventional heroism. His expressions are subtle and he did well in his limitations. The antagonist of the film Ajay was given equal footage as Srikanth. Ajay has got a strong role with good dialogues to prove his acting skills and he is exceptional as a naxal leader. He delivered his best with his perfect gestures. Kamal Kamaraju and Kamalinee Mukherjee give a decent performance and leave their mark. Although the film lacks commercial elements, it is worth a watch!

June 11

Siddharth has made a good comeback with this movie considering how he’s been delivering a string of flops lately. He has rendered a performance that shows some maturity. Nithya Menen looks comfortable even in serious scenes. Priya Anand steals the show with both her acting and her looks. As a result, 180 is a finely-made film with some good performances but without the novelty or the gripping element.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon Cast: Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, John Malkovich Director: Michael Bay Producer: Steven Spielberg, Michael Bay Music: Steve Jablonsky

Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Raveena Tandon, Hema Malini, Charmme, Sonu Sood, Prakash Raj, Sonal Chauhan Director: Puri Jagannadh Producer: Ram Gopal Verma Music: Vishal-Shekar

June 11

Four years after he rolled out the first flick, Michael Bay offers another huge, cacophonous calamity in which the Autobots and Decepticons face off. ‘Dark of the Moon’ is the best of the movie franchise lot. Here’s what you need to know: It’s a spectacle, and it’s the sharpest-looking 3-D film since Avatar. And it deserves to be seen in 3-D. This time, Bay has cleaned up the fight sequences so you can at least tell which robots are fighting whom and who wins. He also creates an immersive experience for the final 40-minute battle scene in which Chicago is turned into a burned-out wasteland. The visuals are pretty awesome, especially the glass skyscraper split in half. Plus, for the first time the Transformers move more fluidly than clunky. Go watch!

Bbuddah... is an ultimate entertainer made by the selfproclaimed biggest Amitabh Bachchan fan ever – our very own Puri Jagannadh. He churns out an outlandish film more style than substance as a tribute to the ‘angry young man’ image of Bachchan from the 1970s. He sets out to prove that Bachchan’s magic isn’t gone, that he can still command complete attention onscreen and he can still kick some ass. Amitabh never stops amazing you with the range of his histrionics. Despite his age, he grabs eyeballs with his action cuts, comic cameos, romantic encounters, emotional bytes and his over-the top sartorial sense. Like a one-man colossus, he towers over the screen. If the gimmickry has not fallen flat on screen, it’s only thanks to Amitabh Bachchan’s timeless charisma and tireless stamina. Despite the ridiculous story and a largely pathetic support cast, this one-man show delivers the goods. This one is Bachchan-fest to the core!

Sega

Kandireega

Cast: Nani, Nithya Menen, Karthik Kumar, Bindu Madhavi Director: Anjana Producer: Ashok Vallabhaneni Music: Joshua Sridhar

Cast: Ram, Hansika, Swathi, Sonu Sood, Brahmanandam Director: Santosh Srinivas Producer: Bellamkonda Suresh Music: Mani Sharma

Sega is the dubbed version of the Tamil movie Veppam. Made by debutante director Anjana Ali Khan, who has earlier assisted Gautham Menon, the film is set in the backdrop of slum wars. This film was supposed to release in May but was pushed back due to technical reasons. Nani and Nithya Menen, who starred together in Ala Modalaindi will also reprise the lead pair here. Nani plays a slum character in this film with a rugged outlook. The music is already a hit although some of the numbers are a direct rip-off from English pop numbers.

This month, the handsome young hero Ram and the chocolatey Hansika Motwani are to spread forth their romance once again with Kandireega. After their Maska didn’t make much of an impact, this cute pair is back again with a love action entertainer directed by Santosh Srinivas. This movie is very important as both the leads are coming off a lean streak. Apparently, the talking point of the movie shall be the chemistry shared between the pair. The music is scored by Mani Sharma.

Alluring Shweta Basu

Shweta Basu has come a long way since her Iqbal days. What other actors spend a lifetime trying to accomplish, Shweta Basu achieved while she was just a pre-teen. Yes, this pretty young thing laid the groundwork for a bonafide movie career with a National award-winning role in Makdee when she was believe it or not, just 11. It’s only been upwards for this talented beauty who has given us memorable hits like Kotha Bangaru Lokam in her cinematic oeuvre. She poses exclusively for Starz this month.

If not an actress, I would be a lawyer because I am very good at arguing. Best compliment ever received While shooting Iqbal, Naseeruddin Shah exclaimed “Shweta, you are doing well. I’m not surprised”. Favorite Movie Memoirs of a Geisha – it reflects the many shades of a woman at different ages. Favorite Books Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, HG Wells’ Time Machine, Kuldip Nayyar’s nonfiction Without Fear: Life and trial of Bhagat Singh. Favorite Food Fish and rice, Rajma Chawal, Butter Chicken, Alu parathas, I love chaat.

work in Badrinath has been really raved about. In fact, it is one of the talking points of the movie. Could you quickly take us through your experience? We started the schedule with a fight sequence shot in Manali. I was flown down there to meet the director and get the brief. It’s a very interesting costume in black with a harness on his chest and harem pants coupled with specially-designed footwear. A red scarf was tied to the waist giving it a splash of color and break to the garment. Allu Arjun looked amazing holding a sword and fighting the baddies. same costume. It was an off-white thin muslin top with no sleeves, collar or finishing. The deep V neck and the sleeves were simply scissor cut to give out a raw appeal. It was teamed with orange harem pants with a custommade waist band and boots to go by. Bunny also wore a knee pad shaped like a bull’s head. I can still recollect the poster. It seems to be everyone’s favorite, I guess. There was another people’s favorite – a sleeveless jute top with dark brown piping and linen trousers to match. I threw in a scarf and a couple of bands were created to be worn around from ankle to knee in this attire. Bunny also liked it as he asked me to repeat those in another dance costume which I did albeit with buttons this time. I should mention that the entire footwear in the film has been custom-made for Bunny.

Designing for men or women pick your choice!

“I always

knew I would work with him at some point. However, I didn’t expect it to happen so soon”

How is it like working with the Stylish Star? I’ve known Bunny for quite some time and I always knew I would work with him at some point. However, I didn’t expect it to happen so soon. What can I say, he is just wonderful to work with. He is just so nice to you. He is really chilled out as a person. If he doesn’t like something, he only asks “Can we do better?” So you feel more responsible than ever. Working with him has only got me admiring him even more. It took a while to understand him so maybe now I can do a better job of styling him next time. He makes fashion his own by carrying it off so well. Who’s your role model? Honestly, I have no role models. I just derive inspiration from random things although I admire everyone who works hard with sincerity and honesty. What inspires you? Our culture, colors, nature and people! I also have a lot of British influence on me as I’ve lived there for a really long time. Any designers you admire… The only three designers I admire are Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano and Thierry Mugler.

28

June 11

There’s a huge market for women compared to men because women are the most beautiful creatures on earth and there’s so much that you can play along with. Women experiment constantly and look after themselves more than men do. At the same time, designing for men is more challenging as you are constantly striving to innovate. I don’t really restrict myself to a particular gender. Designing for both poses the same challenges! This season’s fashion trends… The sad thing about our country is that we don’t have a fashion forecast. In the West, there’s a board of members that decides the forecast and everyone else works upon it in their own style. We then get to see different collections every six months. Here in India, it’s the same embroidery in different colors, patterns and fabrics. Our culture is so strong and inherent in us that we can’t take a break from the traditions of our identity. Your fashion philosophy… Wear your personality!

We started the schedule with a fight sequence shot in Manali. When I was called on the sets of Badrinath, Director Vinayak and Bunny asked me for an Indian warrior look. My first challenge was to create the look of Samurai warrior keeping in mind and the fashion trend Indianness intact. For this we got hair extensions done to give him the raw look of a mountain tribal. We decided to go with garments that were loose as he need to be comfortable in the fights. At the same time, the clothes had to be fashionable to give him a unique look. For this we adopted bit of both eastern and Indian cultures in to the clothing. We kept the Indian element intact by sticking to earthy colours while the fabrics were cotton, Lenin, mull and jute. A lot of accessories were used through the film to accentuate the look further.

The deep V neck and sleeves were simply scissor cut to give out a raw appeal. It was teamed with orange harem pants with a custom-made waist band and boots to go by. Bunny also wore a knee pad shaped like a bull’s head. I can still recollect the poster. It seems to be everyone’s favorite,

There was another people’s favourite- this time from one of the song sequences. It was a sleeveless jute top with dark brown piping and linen trousers to match it. I threw in a scarf and a couple of bands were created to be worn around the calves from ankle to knee over the jeans. Bunny seemed to have liked them as he asked me to repeat those in another dance costume which I did albeit with buttons this time. I should mention that the entire footwear in the film has been custom made for Bunny.

Dhookudu Dhookudu is an odd film that brings together two people who are poles apart in their approach to cinema – Mahesh Babu and Srinu Vaitla. While Mahesh Babu is known for his suave and high adrenaline action films, Srinu Vaitla is the go-to-guy in the industry when it comes to making a comedy film. So what happens when they join forces to make a film? Your guess is as good as ours. The first look of the film was unveiled recently and the glimpse of Mahesh Babu wielding a gun and running behind goons indicates that it’s going to be an action entertainer. Like every other Mahesh Babu film, Dhookudu is one of the most awaited films of the year. Moreover, this time there’s lot more curiosity about the film since everything about has been kept secret. 31

June 11

The initial buzz about the film began in late 2009. Dhookudu was expected to go on floors as early as February 2010. Meanwhile, Samantha joined the cast soon after her debut film, Ye Maaya Chesave turned out to be a huge hit. Finally, two weeks after Khaaleja released, the principal shooting of Dhookudu began in Istanbul in the last week of October. The movie boasts of a terrific cast like Prakash Raj, Sonu Sood, Brahmanandam, Sayaji Shinde, Vennela Kishore and Sonia (Happy Days fame) to name a few. Shreya, the little girl who acted in Jai Chiranjeeva and Robo also plays an important role in the film. Apart from the cast, one would also get to hear some great numbers by SS Thaman who currently is the hot favourite of the Telugu Film Industry after the success of Kick and Brindavanam. Action choreographers Ram-Laxman have composed a few unique fight sequences. Some extraordinary chase sequences have been shot by Srinu Vytla in the streets of Istanbul, the capital of Turkey. All this apart, while the shoot was in full swing in Istanbul, Samantha had a close encounter with a bomb blast. She had gone shopping in Istanbul’s Taksim Square along with her make-up man and hair stylist. Soon she heard the thudding sound of a bomb blast. Thankfully, nothing happened to Samantha or her entourage. “I had the day off and went to Taksim with my makeup artist and hairstylist. We were on the opposite side of the 32

road away from the bomb blast,” said Samantha describing her experience. After the unit has returned from Turkey, most part of the film is being shot in Hyderabad. While the film was supposed to release in the summer of 2011, the month long strike in December-January earlier this year led to complete chaos. The shooting got delayed due to non-availability of dates of most of the actors and sources say that Srinu Vytla shot a few scenes in Hyderabad which were originally supposed to be shot in Mumbai and Chennai. A song has also been shot in Rann of Kutch, Gujarat which is another first for Mahesh Babu. Not much is known about the storyline of the film, although there’s a strong buzz that Mahesh might be a police officer yet again. Interestingly, the film’s satellite rights have already been sold for a whopping price of Rs 5.75 crores. Usually, entertainment channels vie for the satellite rights for such films when they approach their date of release; however, for this film, the satellite rights have been sold even before half the film was shot. Recently, the first look of the film was released and for the first time Mahesh Babu spoke about the effort being put by Srinu Vytla and also added that he was very confident of the final result. We’ll find out what he meant when the film hits the screens soon. The makers of Dhookudu are planning a tentative August-end release. We can’t wait!

Ram

All Geared up

How do you describe Ram? Heartthrob? Talent powerhouse? Bundle of energy? All of the above! As he gets ready for the release of his new movie Kandireega, he gets candid in an exclusive interview to Starz.

I did an English-Tamil film that won me the Best Actor award in a European film festival

Your new film Kandireega is soon up for release. Any pre-release jitterbugs? I wouldn’t call them jitterbugs but I am definitely excited and eager for the film’s release. It’s a love action entertainer that I’m sure the audience will love. I am paired with Hansika for the second time in my career after Maska and Colors Swathi is also making a cameo in it. Do you think there’s any extra pressure on you considering that RRKK didn’t really do that well? There’s always a lot of pressure on an actor if his earlier film hasn’t done too well. But I am not a person who bows down to it. I never let any pressure get to me. I always go out there and give my best. You had only one release in 2010. And even Kandireega has taken its time in the making. Any particular reason? After Jagadam release around four years back, I did not sign any films for 7 months although I was listening to a lot of scripts. After 15 months, Ready came up. Meanwhile I let go of a lot of big projects. Then RRKK happened. It’s always been my principle that I do only those films that I strongly believe in. After a gap of 7 months again, the script of Kandireega came to me and I went ahead. Like I said, I’m really excited about this movie. So are you choosy as an actor? What do you look for in a script? Not really. I’m not choosy. I’m only looking for quality. If I believe in the story and its script, then I go ahead and do the film. Fights, comedy, dance, romance – your strongest points? Rate in order. I feel I am strong in all these aspects and can perform all of them with ease according to the scenes and its requirements. A good actor should be strong in all these departments. 36

June 11

Looking back at your career, what would be your defining moment? My most unforgettable moment was my start in this industry when I was just 11 years old. I did an English-Tamil film that won me the Best Actor award in a European film festival. Many Tamil producers saw me in that movie and offered me roles in their films. That is how I started my career in Tamil and have since progressed to Telugu. What’s been your experience till date?

best

film

My Film Ready was the best experience ever! It was my first film in Telugu and moreover, it was from my home banner. I really enjoyed doing that film. What is the best compliment you’ve ever received? And the worst? I don’t remember because I am a person who lets go of such things. If it is a positive compliment then I take it to my heart and feel happy. If it is something negative, then I think for a moment and if it makes sense to me, I would definitely try to change it or let it go. Who do you consider your closest friends in the industry? I have a very limited friends circle. Most of them are from outside the industry only. The people who were my friends in class II continue to be my friends even today.

You recently bought a Porsche with your own earnings. It must have given you immense satisfaction. Are you a race freak? I am crazy about cars. The fact that this is my first car that I bought with my own money gives me immense pleasure and joy. I am a very safe driver though. What is your work mantra?

Work, work, work like you won’t get work anymore! Love, Love, Love like you won’t get to live anymore. What is your fashion mantra? I don’t have any fashion mantra. Whatever goes well, presentable and comfortable is fashion for me. I am not a brand freak. What does style mean to you? Style is what you feel confident about and is natural. What sort of movies do you want to do in the future? I don’t have any specific idea in my mind about what sort of movies to do and what not to do. Any story or character that impresses me and gets me excited in doing the film, I go ahead and do it. What does the future hold for you?

A movie you saw recently that you wished you had been part of…

I am a practical person and accept whatever comes to me.

To tell you the truth, I haven’t watched any recent movies since I have been busy for the longest time shooting day and night for Kandireega. I’ve been concentrating a lot on my role in this film.

Message to your fans Keep watching my movies, as your encouragement gives me more and more enthusiasm to do better and successful films.

‘‘My movie is a result of my life experiences!”

Sukumar

H

is latest movie 100% Love is running successfully to packed houses everywhere. His peers and critics are hailing him as one of the best contemporary directors around today. But ace director Sukumar remains unfazed with all the attention coming his way. He is still the same down-to-earth person as he was when he had just entered the industry. Starz catches him in a delightful interview as he opens up about his recent success and a lot more... How did you get the idea of making 100% Love? In student life, the competition between two rankers is very interesting. During my school life, I was the topper till my 10th. At that time there was purity in the selfishness and jealousy between the students. But now, the definition of selfishness and jealousy has completely changed or rather it has become impure. With this concept in mind, I always had this idea to make a film on the subject. And 100% Love is the result of this experience. You have made only 4 movies in 7 years of your career. Why does it take so long? I take time to come to a clear decision on the screenplay. For one given situation, we have various options in the screenplay as there are different permutations and combinations. I could not come to a final conclusion and was confused. Sometimes I was not satisfied with one thought and the way I was proceeding. In such situations, I think it over and take my time till I am satisfied. Tell us something about your thought process? I wouldn’t say 100% Love is totally a new theme. I always like to do something different from others. A new story or theme gives me a driving force and strong motivation to do the film. A new flavor in the screenplay gives a lot of excitement. 39

June 11

You made 100% Love and Arya. Are they derived from your real life experiences? Real life experiences and thought processes both put together form a film. Arya and Arya-2 are movies that evolved from a thought process about love. 100% Love is derived from my real life experiences. What is love, according to you? Man is a social being. Earlier I thought love is about living together forever like we see in the movies only. Now I feel it is foolish to think that we cannot live if somebody leaves us. It is true that we miss them and feel sad about it. I have experienced actual and unconditional love only after seeing my newborn daughter.

Apart from 3 love movies, you have also made a violence-themed movie Jagadam. What do you think went wrong with it? Jagadam has come from a world of experiences. I was a very violent natured person when I was young. I feel every human has violent feelings inside him but we suppress it but sometimes it comes out some way or the other. If Jagadam was a hit, then all the producers would have approached me to make such violent films only. As Arya was a successful film, the producers branded me for these love themes and thus approached me. I am not particular about making only love films. Frankly

I am interested in making violent films, because those excite me a lot. speaking,

You were a lecturer first and then a director. Tell us something about your journey. My journey started as a lecturer. I used to teach Maths in Kakinada and eventually my passion for movies brought me to Hyderabad. I later worked as Assistant Director to VV Vinayak for Dil and then I turned director with Arya. Being a lecturer, film direction was an easy job as I know the nature of the students who are also the audience. What inspired you to show heroes with negative shades in Jagadam and Arya-2? According to me, a hero always having to be a positive character has created boredom, and there is no excitement left. In my opinion, a person is a combination of all attitudes whether positive or negative. A society creates a person in such a way that all his

40

June 11

negativity is suppressed inside and only the positive side is seen outside. I tried showing this in Arya-2 as well where the hero promises not to be proved bad. Your movies always look so fresh in terms of visual appeal. How is that? It’s all about team work. As a director, I lead my team and it helps that they are a creative lot. I am very particular about my properties in my films. My team cooperates a lot with me in making the visuals look so unique in my films. What was your most challenging scene during the making of 100% Love? It definitely has to be the steps scene. I was confused whether I would be able to capture the emotions and body language correctly. But Chaitanya performed very well there, catching the scene properly. The scene was shot during night and all the buildings were lighted, which took 4-5 hours and we then proceeded with the shoot. What are your future projects? We are making 100% Love in Hindi. We are yet to finalize the casting. I am also planning a movie with Mahesh Babu. I am waiting to narrate the story to him. Who are your favorite directors that inspire you? There are so many wonderful movies and worthy directors who are enormously talented. Mani Ratnam, Ram Gopal Varma and Krishna Vamsi are my favorite directors. Favorite Movies Antuleni Katha, Swatimuthyam and Geetanjali!

Favorite Actors SV Ranga Rao and Allu Ramalingaiah You always prefer to stay away from the limelight. How do you manage? I am an all-time hero for my mother and she pampered me a lot as I was the youngest in the family. I am always in her limelight (smiles). I got married two and half years back and have a beautiful daughter who is my stress reliever. I don’t need anything else. What makes you happy in life? My wish is to visit the whole world, to see new places and meet different people. Old structures attract me the most. 5 years from now…

I want to make a high budget historical movie. Your message to your audiences Don’t take movies too seriously. Just enjoy them.

all it convenience or preference, these days most singers prefer doing multiple things. Being versatile is the new fad. If you can dabble in more than one task, a plethora of opportunities have opened up. Today, singers are grooming themselves more than ever before. Apart from singing, the current crop of singers doesn’t mind grooving on stage to entertain the audience, a concept which was almost non-existent a decade ago. Not just content within a recording studio, most singers these days dabble with emceeing, live concerts and having their own music bands. Starz finds out more details.

41

June 11

There was a time when singers used to restrict themselves to recording studios to croon everything, from melodious songs to the raunchiest of numbers. With changing times, the singers came out of their studios and began singing in front of a live audience. The scenario today is a far cry from the era where singers like SP Balasubramaniam, Janaki, Chitra and others were at their prime. Today, there are innumerable ways for singers to use their knowledge of the aspects of music to create a sustainable career, that too by doing what they love. Singer Hemachandra who has had quite a few good songs in his kitty, in recent times, like Sri Ganga in Teen Maar, Prema Desham in Shakti, Piliche and Sunday Monday in Khaleja has been busy doing a lot of live shows. Question him on how it works, he replies, “A singer can perform live only when he or she has enough hit songs to their credit. Popularity comes with having recognition.” Apart from having enough work as a singer, he should also be a crowd puller and have great amount of energy to perform for long hours in front of a huge audience. Hemachandra adds, “Being just a singer doesn’t help. Not every singer can do live shows; they need the charm to keep the crowd glued for that one hour. For any singer, it’s also important to connect with the audience.” Many of the young breed of singers believe that being multifaceted is important for sustainability in the music industry which sees a whole lot of new singers coming in with the endless reality shows each year. Sreeram Chandra is one such singer whose fame skyrocketed after he was crowned the Indian Idol in 2010. He was awarded Rs 50 lakhs in cash, a one year contract with Sony Music Entertainment and also a chance to sing for a Yash Raj Films project. After that, he became so popular that several corporate houses and associations abroad were vying with each other to have him on board for a show. He created a brand for himself, thanks to the ‘Indian Idol’ tag. Popular singer Naresh Iyer, who crooned songs in Rang De Basanti, has been one of the most sought after singers in Telugu and Tamil for quite some time. His recent rendition of the song Nenu Nuvvantu from Orange had got everyone talking for a long time. He says, “It’s good that these reality shows are able to capture hidden talents and bring them to limelight. But then there are so many people who come in and it requires us to be versatile to keep ourselves cemented well.”

42

June 11

Anuj Gurwara, who gained popularity with his song Panchadara Bomma in Maghadheera being no.1 on charts, also voices a similar opinion as that of Hemachandra. “Great singers are not necessarily great performers. Singing in front of a microphone in a studio is different from singing in front of a live audience,” he says adding, “For most of us (singers), a major source of earning is through emceeing and live shows.” Most of these shows are scheduled from October onwards when the corporate organisations host their annual cultural events and the season stretches till the first three or four months of the next year. On the other hand, thanks to the presence of a number of south Indian associations formed by our Telugu and Tamil Diaspora living abroad especially in USA, UK, Canada, and Australia, some of the popular singers from Telugu and Tamil film industries fly abroad every year to perform along with their troupes. Chakri, Mani Sharma, Devi Sri Prasad are some such popular music directors who make such annual visits along with their own set of singers.

film. Andrea Jeremiah, who regularly sings for Devi Sri Prasad, is also an actress. Several singers these days are invited on reality TV shows dedicated to music where they judge and mentor upcoming talent. Chinmayi, who dubbed for Samantha in Ye Maaya Chesave and Sameera Reddy in Surya S/O Krishnan, is not just an accomplished singer but also an entrepreneur. She’s founder and CEO of a translation services company called Blue Elephant which is based in Chennai. Recently, she spent quite some time in US where she participated in Fortune/US State Department Global Women’s Mentoring Partnership Program. She was one among three women from India and thirty five from all over the world who were invited to participate in this program.

Creating a brand identity has become all the more important for singers and some of them have already made a name for themselves with emceeing, performing at live shows, hosting TV shows to quote a few examples. It may take a few different revenue streams to make this music-filled lifestyle sustainable for Apart from emceeing and live shows, some singers have been most of our singers, but there’s no denying that their life is fuelled expanding their horizons beyond these two popular formats. by what they love the most… Music! Kousalya, a popular singer, is going to compose music for a Telugu
