Letter from the Managing Director Turn a new page! The start of something new is always exciting. It’s also a wonderful thing, because a fresh start means you have nothing tying you down, nothing stopping you from creating and shaping what you want. We’ve only begun to imagine the possibilities. Welcome to the first issue of Starz. Whew! What a month. As we worked on this super-fabulous issue, we realize how much fun it is when you love what you do! It doesn’t feel like work at all. However, getting a magazine out is not such an easy thing when you can sense the anticipations building up in the air as the launch date gets closer and especially when you have a pedigree and reputation to live upto. What can you expect from the magazine? Starz can really be characterized by its eclectic nature. How? Usually, there are plenty of features and ideas that get covered on a daily basis by newspapers and on an hourly basis by websites. Tackling them head on isn’t always the most interesting way to go about it. But as this issue & the forthcoming ones shall illustrate, it’s when we look at them through different perspectives, when we address them indirectly, that we often find the most meaning. This issue, we cover a lot of features through our unique perspectives that we take great pride in. It’s always exciting to turn the page at Starz!

We has been a wonderful experience. We are proud of what have maverick cameraman Senthil we have been able to put together. Munnabhai Chale Amerika Still Delayed After announcing the new Munnabhai sequel movie years ago, Rajkumar Hirani has apparently put the movie on hold for one more year at least. Though there have been speculations about the cause of delay, sources close to him say that the soft spoken filmmaker is hardly a worried man and is taking things easy. He is making good progress on the script and doesn’t mind waiting a little longer. Right now, he is busy supervising the pre-production of Ferrari ki Sawari.

Bbuddah makes style statement!

Not many know that Amitabh Bachchan is very fond of wrist watches and is sometimes spotted wearing 2 at a time! So when he turned up thus on the first day of the BBUDDAH shoot, he left everyone around amused but not the director Puri Jagannadh who thought it would be apt for his flamboyant character to sport two watches in the film. Big B was more than happy to mix some of his own personal style with his on screen style and hence is born a new style!

Honeymoon’s Over! Literally. But hopefully, not figuratively. Newlyweds Prince William and Kate Middleton have returned to their North Wales home after 10 relaxing, romantic and media-free honeymooning days in the Seychelles. So how was it? And what’s next for the royal couple? “The details of their honeymoon will remain private,” a spokesperson said in a statement on their behalf. Those days reportedly included several diving expeditions in which they witnessed a turtle nest hatching, and saw coral, giant stingrays and sharks. The trip is rumored to have cost around $720,000.

Angelina Jolie reveals her weakness Angelina Jolie can be one tough chick. But even she acknowledges that’s not always a good thing. So how’s the world’s most famous mother of six working through that? Jolie says she’s very much like her kickass Kung Fu Panda character, Tigress—both the good and the bad. “I think I have her weakness, too,” she told reporters at at the premiere of the Kung Fu Panda sequel. “She’s really tough but she doesn’t really sometimes know how to be soft,” she said. “It’s taken me a little while in my life, and my kids have certainly helped with that – to get me a little softer because I have a bit of a hard shell sometimes.”

100% Love Cast: Nagachaitanya, Tamannaah, Tara Alisha, Naresh, KR Vijaya, Dharmavarapu Subramanyam Director: Sukumar Producer: Bunnyvas Music: Devi Sri Prasad

Sukumar beautifully recreates the laws of attraction around the lead pair in this cute love story between Balu (Nagachaitanya) and Mahalakshmi (Tamannaah). The chemistry between them is worth watching. It reminds us of the movie Khushi, where the lead couple have dents in their relationships because of their egos, but Sukumar has taken the story forward well and as usual, gives his unique touches to it. Devi Sri Prasad’s music has only added to the magic. With no foreign location shoots and no unnecessary scenes, the movie is a producer’s delight and is a trademark Sukumar visual treat. Nagchaitanya’s performance is commendable as the hard-working class topper, while Tammanaah has showcased her innate talents. The comedy scenes throughout are truly funny and the screenplay keeps you engrossed. This youthful entertainer has got the college crowds rushing to theatres in the post-exam season. For some really delightful entertainment, go watch!

FAST FIVE Cast: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson Director: Justin Lin Producer: Neal H. Moritz, Vin Diesel

One of the most successful movie franchises of all time, the latest installment has all the main characters from the previous movies coming together in this one. The USP of the movie is Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock pitted against Vin Diesel in a cop versus robber story. The storyline is rather simple, they are in Rio to do a job and are running from the FBI, led by The Rock. He knows their history and knows to not let them get into cars. When a job goes bad they find themselves not only on the run from The Rock and his highly trained team, but also from the deadliest man in Brazil. Instead of running from the Rock and the Drug lord of Rio, they break into warehouses and burn drugs and money so they will move it all into one safe within the Rio De Janeiro Police Department. With this plan in motion, the movie turns itself into an Ocean’s Eleven type scenario, where they are planning to break into the vault and steal the guys money. There is enough action and sex appeal to make anyone want to get into their car and race that quarter-mile to the theaters to see this action-packed thrill ride start to finish. Must-watch for sure!

RIDING THE TOLLY WAVES Cinematography needs lots of patience, hard work, a wide range of thought processing and above all extraordinary visualization capabilities! KK Senthil Kumar, the most wanted cinematographer of South Cinema today has it all. It’s not that easy to measure the talent of this young technician. Starz catches Senthil in a candid mood about his life’s journey. I am a Tamilian born and brought up in Hyderabad. My entry into films was a rather filmy one. I would call it destiny. I grew up like every other local boy with a passion for cricket and I even represented my college in various cricket leagues. Kapil Dev was my role model. Civil services had always been my first career option. A friend happened to apply to the Pune Film Institute and asked if i would take the test with him as it would help me prepare for my civil services exam. I opted for cinematography. It was an amazing selection process. 40 people were called for the interview, half days each of training and group discussions for a week. They finally selected eight out of 40 and I was one

34

Starz_final_after proof.indd 34

of them. As the years passed, I learnt about the camera and the wonders that can be created with this beautiful invention. After I graduated, ”I

thought that a red carpet awaited me in the Telugu film industry. I was met with disappointment” as I had no contacts or background. At Prasad Labs, i met Mr.Punnayya, a film grader who asked me to first assist a cinematographer before expecting an opportunity. I immediately joined cinematographer Sharath Sir. My first film as Assistant was Premaku Velayera and I worked with him till Jabili.

Aithe: Chandra Sekhar Yeleti asked me to work as a cameraman for his TV serial Amrutham. I had no films in hand so I took a step into TV. I worked for 13 episodes. After looking at my work, Chandra Sekhar Yeleti asked me to be his cameraman for his debut movie Aithe. We created a

for six months after Aithe even after being acknowledged for my good work. People thought I would never be able to pull off commercial cinema.

Sye: Rajamouli called me after Simhadri and narrated Sye. I loved it. When someone like Rajamouli believes in you so much, you stop at nothing but the best. It’s always a great experience to work with him. Chatrapati: This is one of my best works till date. I strongly believe that a cinematographer’s work is not to be able to make visuals look good, but to help the director tell his story more efficiently. My work should be in perfect sync with the director’s narration. When the cinematographer’s and the director’s visualizations match, one can work wonders on the screen. Since it was a harsh story, we used a lot of brown tint. We deliberately avoided a colorful look. There is a pre-interval mud fight in the movie shot in the rain. We needed constant light to cover a wide outdoor area. Balloon lights did not exist in Hyderabad at that time. I used a 40x40 ft iron frame and stuffed it with lots of lights, diffusers and dangled it using a 100 ft industrial crane. I used soft lights while shooting the fight in slow motion. Chatrapati was my first step towards visual effects. We canned a shark fight in the movie and did major blue-mat work for it. Ashok: This movie introduced me to the Super35mm camera and DI (Digital Intermediate). DI is an integral part of the cinematographer’s job. There is a sequence in the movie where the dead friend (Rajiv Kanakala) of the hero (NTR) appears

35

Starz_final_after proof.indd 35

on screen. To highlight the contrast, we showed Rajiv Kanakala’s part in black and white and the rest of the frame in color. I always liked the photographer Ken Anderson’s greeting cards done in black and white except for a small thing like a rose in bright red. I always wanted something like that. In one of the fight sequences, I wanted the blood to be in red and the rest of the frame in black and white. Director Surender agreed to this and the concept was appreciated by all. Arundhati: This

project was a dream come true, especially to work with a passionate producer like Shyam Prasad Reddy. Arundhati was a big step towards visual effects. Working for Arundhati was an out-of-the-world experience. It had mind-boggling visuals for South standards. Shyam told me that even if he shouts at me, I should take my own time to get the final output to perfection. We used motion control camera for the first time in Telugu films. It remembers the path of the camera and repeats it. Using that, we could shoot the glittering fort and its dilapidated ruins with the same motion control. We imported it all the way from Australia. The movie’s DI colorist Shiva is a very talented technician. Yamadonga: Working for this movie gave me immense confidence about my abilities as a cinematographer.

The Yamalokam set erected was the biggest indoor set in India. I had never worked on such big sets and wasn’t sure about the lighting set up. When we try to show glittering gold, we use harsh lighting which casts shadows. So I got the whole set under a huge skimmer of soft lights so that there wouldn’t be any shadows. When Rajamouli wanted the glittering effect, I took a day’s extension. I got a huge box of household lights behind the camera and lit them up. Since these were specular lights, they show the glitter effect without casting shadows. We

used all the lights in Hyderabad to light up Yamalokam Magadheera: I can go on and on about the movie. I was always fascinated with movies like Gladiator, Ben Hur and Brave Heart. When Rajamouli narrated the story of Magadheera, my joy knew no bounds. At the same time I was sceptical whether I could pull it off. Visual effects were never used in such a large scale in Indian movies before. I had to co-ordinate with the VFX team even before the shooting started to seamlessly integrate VFX into my work. Chariot Race: Scouting for locations was fun. We were looking for dry, open lands for the chariot race scene. So we landed in Gujarat. Out there, some passersby told us that there were white salt lands around 200

June 11

6/16/2011 9:50:02 PM

km away in Dholavira. We doubted whether horses could run on salt . While shooting, we needed a light weight vehicle to follow the horses. So we bought a Maruti van and cut off the top part and used it to mount the camera along with the Jimmy Jib to shoot the race. We shot a part of Dheera Dheera song in this place. I wanted a dry tree in the backdrop and the art director got one from nowhere. 100 warriors episode: Rajamouli conceived the 100 warriors episode first. We had to make the hero kill 100 warriors, but it had to look convincing. It would be believable if the hero fought with 4-5 people at a time. Then it struck us that we could use a passage to restrict the number of fighters. Thus, the conception of the bridge, cliff and Bhairava Kona came into existence. The Stadium (Arena): We created the kingdom of Uday Gadh using computer graphics but developing it was a tedious process. We don’t have the culture of arena fights in Indian history as it belongs to the Romans.

36

Starz_final_after proof.indd 36

Conceiving and shooting in that arena set was one of the most cumbersome and satisfying experiences of my life. On Rajamouli: Rajamouli is constantly growing with each and every film by pushing the limits to the next level. We have great understanding and compatibility. We know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. We do argue sometimes, but we complement each other too. We both share the same wavelength in terms of thinking and visualizing. It always feels good to work with him. Directorial plans: I have long thought about directing a movie. It is like being captain of the ship and has been my dream since my film institute days. Let’s hope it works out. Personal Life: I tied the knot with Ruhee on 25 June 2009. I met her a couple of years back and realized that we were made for each other. She is a yoga teacher with Bharat Thakur’s Artistic Yoga. She is the perfect description of my better half. We have a son Ryaan Karttikeyan who is just older than a year now.

Favourite Movies Bicycle Thief and Godfather. Favourite Cinematographer Gordon Willis (of Godfather). Books recommended for budding Cinematographers 1. American Cinematographers Manual. 2. Masters of Light 3. Basic Photography 4. Film Directing: Shot by Shot.

Dreams: They keep changing with time. Initially it was to become a cinematographer. Now it is to be one of the best cinematographers in India. Obviously then to become the first Indian cinematographer to win an Oscar.

From being the grand son of movie moghul RamaNaidu to being a youth star in your own right… the journey! What has changed? Well it has been a learning curve all the way. My family has been a great influence both in my personal life and professional life. I look up to my grand father who is an icon in the industry, my uncle Venkatesh who is hugely popular and my father who has been a very successful producer. All of them have contributed to my growth as a person and as an actor. They taught me the nuances of film and its like a film school from Class I. How did the fact that you’re from a film family shape your sensibilities? Did it give you some sort of a direction early on in life? I am very fortunate to have been born in a family that has set standards in the film industry and society. The family taught me love, discipline and above all the strength to face challenges courageously. Of course, being from a family of successful filmmakers makes things a little easy for making a foray in the industry. However, the short journey I made in the last few years taught me the skills and conviction that can lead you to be accepted in the industry. Did you always feel drawn towards movies? No doubt. I grew up in a family where each member of the family is involved in the industry in some way

I used to eat, drink, and sleep movies all the time. I was always

or the other.

fascinated by movies. What’s the best thing about being in the film world? It teaches you conviction, discipline and love, without which an actor can never be successful. And the worst? It is a tough terrain. And one has to be fortunate to get the right kind of movies. The scare of being turned away from audiences and cinema lovers is nightmarish for anyone who is associated with the industry. What about fame? Its great to know that your work has been accepted. But the key is to keep your feet on the ground.

47

Starz_final_after proof.indd 47

But people are so judgmental about star sons. What goes through your mind when you read such stuff? How do you take criticism? It is a difficult journey for anyone to get into the industry. To be from a family of filmmakers it is relatively easy to foray into the industry. What’s important are our likes and dislikes. If you are cut for a role, then nothing can stop you from being what you want to be. Do you find it strange that people have already started trusting you, with so few films to your credit? It makes me nervous and at the same time happy! I am glad that people like my work and continue to do so. I hope that I will be able to live up to my audiences’ expectations as much as I can by working on projects that bring out the best in me. How much of your acting do you put down to genetics & how much to the rest? Genetics gives you the push. But sustenance is in your hands. It is your own performance that people will judge on the screen which is crucial for success. Leader showed your acting prowess. But when it was launched, do you think you were prepared enough as an actor? Leader was indeed a challenging role. People always asked me why I chose a genre that is so different from the typical masala movie a young actor would love to be launched in. But I had great belief in Sekhar

The movie gave me immense satisfaction as an actor.

Kammula and the subject.

It was a fantastic platform and a thorough learning curve. What aspects of movies do you discuss with your dad and uncle? Their guidance is very significant as they have been in the industry for so long. They help pinpoint where I went wrong and how much more I can do to improve my performance. How do you get into character? How deeply do have to imagine your character before you play them? It is very important for an actor to drown into the character. Otherwise the performance is bound to get

affected. To give out the best performance I do a lot of research and watch performances of characters that I portray in my films. As an actor, are emotions easily accessible to you? Or do you have to work hard at them? Acting is hard work. And it is a never ending journey of learning. Each project is new and challenging for any artist. Are you more of an optimist or a pessimist? I believe in myself and the people around me. It is the combination that I feel makes you or breaks you. As a son, what have you learnt from your father? Commitment, passion and above all discipline. As an actor, what have you learnt from Venkatesh? There is so much to learn. I look up to him as a person who is very dedicated to his work and believes in the power of people. As a young leader in the industry, do you think you’re obligated to push the creative boundaries of your field sufficiently? Will we keep seeing you in only commercial roles? I started my career with a highly experimental movie Leader. Even Dum Maaro Dum and Nenu Naa Rakshasi are creatively distinct and different genres. I am an actor with a belief that I should be able to perform in all kinds of roles. To that effect, I can break any boundaries that will add strength to the role. However, I also believe that it is teamwork right from the producer, director, musicians, scriptwriter and others who are an important part of the movie project. Above all my audiences will ultimately decide whether what I did in a project is right or wrong. Some of the various ‘hatke roles’ that actors keep doing from time to time, do you see yourself doing such roles? New subjects always draw attraction provided you are convinced that it suits your idea of how you like to be judged or portrayed in a film. I am an actor and I love to do different roles that can bring the best out of me.

- Chandra sekhar Sunkara The Telugu Film Industry is not only the second largest movie industry (after Hindi) in India, but also one of the most creative hubs of cinema, what with our movies being dubbed and remade into other languages. While this does paint a rosy picture of our industry, there are some aspects in our underbelly that raise an ugly face. We are now in the midst of a crisis that has partly been our own making.

Technology Digital will be the way of life in the future! When it comes to film negatives, camera rentals and post production related to analog technology, the costs are huge. Switching to digital or mixed mode is the way to go in the long term. The technical team has to work collaboratively to reduce the wastage.

Last year, we lost over Rs. 100 crores. Movies may become so-called hits at the box office, but the producer’s not making money. This has become the lament everywhere. The fact remains investing in a movie takes intelligence and not just blindly staking money on a good idea. It takes sense, sensibility, a sensible budget and more...

Movie-making Strategy Strategy, planning and the execution matrix are important factors for any business, including ours. Proper schedules, locations, storyboarding would decrease the production days and increase productivity and savings. Figure out the strengths of the project and push a script that can keep budgets low instead of amplifying it. Filmmakers need to think about what they absolutely have to have first, then if they are able to do more, do so – have your unnecessary Sumo car chases, foreign locale songs etc. Let us cut down on runaway costs, trials & errors by having bound scripts.

Production Values and Costs It’s a given that a good producer has to be able to balance financial and creative issues. Most inexperienced directors and producers have no idea what things cost, how sets work, what the union rules are, and/or how much gear/ transportation/infrastructure is involved in getting even the smallest film made.

Marketing and Distribution Strategy This is relative to the film you’re making and the elements involved. You have a story/concept/idea that has the Having to break down and budget your script early on is like audience appeal – you package this idea with cast, crew having a bucket of cold water thrown at you. It’s unpleasant, and other elements – you ‘back into’ a budget based on but it will wake you up. Better to find out now what the your target audience and package – develop a marketing potentially expensive spots are in your script, than run out and distribution strategy based on new and traditional of money on set. Often discovering these budget hurdles platforms and thus you nail down the strategy based on early on force the makers to rework the script, often leading all these factors. It’s too subjective to speak about here to a better, tighter movie. and can be my material for another day. However, I do think that too many producers think in terms Finance of the “way it’s usually done” and know too much about Most of the producers reach out to private parties for film what can go wrong. It’s often hard for us to think “out of the financing. Taking undue advantage, these private parties box” to find cost-effective solutions. charge exorbitant interest rates. If our industry business Actors Remuneration On an average, 20-25% of the budget goes towards the hero’s remuneration and another 40% for other actors and technicians. Only 30-40% goes into shooting of a movie. Our stars command a price of upto Rs seven crores per movie and the directors upto Rs. 5 crores per film. As long as producers are willing to spend such obscene amounts, this is going to be the norm. We have to think altruistically.

54

Starz_final_after proof.indd 54

system is properly aligned with the mainstream, then venture capitalists, financial firms and banks would help us in all levels. We need a leaner, smarter model to emerge to ensure guarantees. Filmmakers really need to stick together more and share ideas and demand fair play. Really, that’s all anybody wants – a fair deal for an honest day’s work.
