PARKS & Recreat ion

Walt DisneyWorld Walt Disney World is one of the most popular theme parks in the world with its most popular park, M agic K ingdom, having around 17 million visitors a year. This park was opened in 1971 shortly after Walt Disney died in 1966. This park has been a great success, and it now has four theme parks, two water parks, and their shopping center, Disney Springs.

Disney's ThemeParks Hollyw ood St u dios is a movie themed park that features rides from many Disney movies. It has rides and shows from movies such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Toy Story.

Epcot , opened in 1982, is divided into Future World and World Showcase. World Showcase features many different countries that have shops and food along with designs from those areas of the Earth. Future World is supposed to be the city of the future with several futuristic rides.

An im al Kin gdom is Disney's animal theme park. It has both rides and animals, so it is like a theme park and zoo combined! There are regions such as Africa and Asia with different types of animals in each region. There is even a Safari in the park for visitors to really see the animals of Africa. One section of this part has dinosaur rides. Another section represents the imaginary moon from the film Avatar and includes rides.

M agic Kin gdom is the most popular of all of Walt Disney World?s theme parks. This park has about 17 million people visiting it a year. Magic Kingdom has multiple sections such as Futureland, Frontierland, Adventureland, and many more. This park can easily take up a whole day, so plan to spend some time there!

Feat u r ed Car

600 LT By William Hoge McLaren is known for great supercars, but this one is stunning. The McLaren 600LT is a feat of engineering. This car is beautiful, and with a horsepower of 592, I think it's pretty powerful as well. The 600LT can go from 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds. In about the amount of time it took you to read that sentence, the 600LT was already going 60 MPH. The engine is called the McLaren's 562-hp twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-8, and when turbocharged is in the name, the car probably goes fast. The max speed is 250 MPH in Velocity mode according to topspeed.com. I am very excited for this amazing, newest car by McLaren. Now it's time to talk about the look of the car. The rims are standard, but the body design is amazing. It looks very futuristic, and with the color combination of grey with an orange effect (as seen on the next page), it is absolutely stunning. I?m not a fan of the spoiler, but I am a fan of the windows. The way it?s curved looks amazing, and the top is a window so it?s kind of like a convertible. But my favorite part has to be the interior. It is one of the most futuristic parts of the car. The chairs curve in a weird way, but it looks comfortable, and the overall appearance is stunning. I think the inside would look the best if it was grey, but I could only find images with an orange interior. Still, it looks fantastic!

My personal review of the car is probably a 7 out of 10. My main problem is the back of the car, which I am not a fan of. I?m not a big fan of the McLaren logo, and the back lights look weird. There is no problem in the engineering of the car, but the design missed some things that could have made the car great. The biggest one is, again, the back. They could have done something special, but they went with this generic weird thing. That's why I think the 600LT should get a 7 out of 10.

TERRIFIC TEACHERS

Teacher Feature Mr. Dor emus

By: Colin Chewning

Mr. Doremus teaches Woodworking for all of the Middle School. He is also an Assistant Lacrosse Coach. He was born in Jacobstown, New Jersey. His hobbies include woodworking and playing video games. He also has a dog named Marcy.

Q& A What do you like most about St. Chr istopher 's? I enjoy the sense of community that the school has. I feel like I'm quickly getting to know everyone here. I love that I am getting to bring my dog, Marcy, to school everyday. What did you do before you came to St. Chr istopher 's? Before I moved to Richmond, I was teaching Ceramics in Ewing, NJ. Before I started teaching, I was working as a Cabinet Maker and Finisher in Buffalo, NY. Several of the pieces I made while working in New York are currently in the White House. When you were in M iddle School, what were some of your hobbies, activities, and/or spor ts? In Middle School I played soccer year round. In High School I started doing woodworking which led to building the set for our school's plays and musicals. I played a year of lacrosse my freshman year, and I was on the bowling team, eventually becoming Capitan my senior year.

Did you play any video games when you were our age? I f so, which ones were your favor ites? I didn't have any game consoles growing up (my parents wouldn't let me or my brother have any), but I had some computer games and a Gameboy. I grew up playing the original Pokemon games. I also really loved Mario games -- my favorite being Mario Kart Super Circuit for the Gamboy Advanced. When I was in Middle School, I played a lot of Counter Strike: Source which had just been released. Which video games do you really enj oy playing now? The game I have definitely played the most in the last few years has been Rocket League. At this point, I have played over 1300 hours. I'm going to be attending (as a spectator) the Rocket League Championship Series Finals this June in Newark, NJ. In the past year, my two favorite games have been Celeste (a platformer about climbing a mountain) and Tetris Effect. Where did you grow up? Could you tell us a little but about your hometown? I grew up in Jacobstown, New Jersey, which isn't big enough to even have its own Post Office. Most of the town was made up of corn farms and horse farms. I attended Northern Burlington County Regional School, which combined elementary schools from four different small towns. I started taking woodworking in ninth grade. Our school offered numerous technical, agricultural, and automotive classes. I decided to take woodworking because I figured I could only cut my self, while I could cut and burn myself in metal shop. I have since burned myself several times during woodworking projects.

On Friday, May 17, the seventh and eighth-grade choir and the sixth-grade choir traveled to Williamsburg to compete in the Music in the Parks competition. This involved performing in front of judges to receive a rating and score before going to Busch Gardens to have a day of fun. The sixth-grade choir opened up the entire event, singing a wonderful performance and getting a superior rating. The seventh and eighth-grade choir followed up the sixth graders with another great performance and yet another superior rating. After many hours of wandering around Busch Gardens and riding roller coasters, every choir participating in the competition gathered together to watch the awards ceremony. Tension built in the auditorium as each choir and band waited to hear the results. Both St. Christopher ?s choirs won their respective division and won the only two superiors handed out to any choir! Grady White did an amazing job accompanying the seventh and eighth-grade choir on ?I Am With You? and even won an award for best student accompanist. When the time came for the overall awards to be announced, each person anxiously waited to hear what the judges decided. The sixth-grade choir won the overall first place trophy, edging out the seventh and eighth-grade choir by 0.05 points! Both choirs sang very well and managed to come home with three trophies collectively. After this exciting announcement, the boys had some more time to spend in the park before boarding the buses to go back to STC after a long day.

Eighth Gr ade Self - Por tr aits

Wor st Bir thday Ever By Car son Br ow n For a day in November , the weather was better than usual. It was about 70 degr ees that day. If that day is your bir thday, that's good news. This kid named Jacob is tur ning nine. He is ver y excited about this bir thday. This bir thday of his wasn't like any of his other bir thdays, because he wouldn't be getting a new phone f or his other bir thdays. The only r eason that he needed a new phone is that he had dr opped his other phone. Don't know how he did it, but that's how people ar e. He had mor e excitement because he was going to Red Lobster , his f avor ite r estaur ant. He was on a car r ide to Red Lobster with his sister , his mother , and his gr andpar ents. Like always, his older sister was being annoying. She was tr ying to give him bir thday punches, and her punches r eally hur t. His gr andpar ents wer e congr atulating him, like always, and his mother was on the phone talking to her f r iends. That is what usually happens when the whole f amily is together . Finally, they pulled up to Red Lobster . Jacob immediately gets excited. His mom had alr eady made a r eser vation so they got seated immediately. They even got one of those booths by the bar ; this was a bonus because their f ood and dr inks would come out f aster . While waiting, Jacob was watching videos on his phone. While watching videos on his phone, he gets a notif ication that his f avor ite show is ending next week. Right af ter he f inds that out, his f amily shar es with him that he won't be getting a new phone f or his bir thday; he won't be getting a new phone until Chr istmas. That's bar ely two months away. Ever ything was going badly f or him on his bir thday. At the table, his f ace is f acing down instead of cr ying. ?What's wr ong?? his mother asked. He doesn't say anything. His mother tr ies to ask again, but then the f ood ar r ived. The waitr ess puts the plates on the table. Jacob or der ed what he usually or der s, br oiled tilapia with or ange slices. That was tr uly his f avor ite f ood. His sister or der ed some cr ab legs, his gr andpar ents or der ed shr imp with pr ime r ib and his mom or der ed shr imp with cr ab legs and a sweet potato. But that's when his whole bir thday tur ned ar ound(in a bad way). Th e Ret u r n How Vi r gi n i a w en t f r om a f i r st r ou n d ex i t t o N at i on al Ch am ps by Edison Pellum bi Last year , everyone around the college basketball world knew what happened on March 16, 2018. UMBC pulled off the greatest upset in NCAA Tournament history by beating the top-seeded Virginia Cavaliers 74-54. It was the first time ever that a 16 upended a 1. Virginia had come in as the heavy favorite to win it all. It took a perfect game by UMBC and an awful game by UVA for the upset to happen. The lowest per possession offensive output of the year by UVA gave UMBC a chance to make an upset if they could get some points on the board. That is what happened. The Retrievers were hitting three after three in the second half and ended up making history, winning 74-54, pulling off the monumental upset. For 2018-19, some doubted how well Virginia would respond to the historic loss. They got improvement from redshirt sophomores De?Andre Hunter and Jay Huff, juniors Ty Jerome, Kyle Guy, and Mamadi Diakite and help from newcomers Braxton Key and Kihei Clark, it is safe to say they have responded perfectly. This year, they were 29-3 in the regular season, with the only losses coming to a top 15 Florida State team in the ACC Tournament that can go 11 deep and a Duke team that will have 3 top 10 picks in this June?s NBA Draft with Cam Reddish, RJBarrett, and Zion Williamson. Heading into the NCAA tournament, some believed the Hoos could deal with the chants and pressure of being a one seed again. UVA kicked off the NCAA Tournament, they played 16 seed, Gardner Webb. It looked like another disaster. Twelve minutes into the game, GW was up 30-16. The Runnin?Bulldogs used a fake screen to draw a hedge from a UVA big and get an open look at the basket. At that point, Coach Bennett took a timeout to make an adjustment on that, and UVA ended the half on a 14-6 run to cut it to 36-30 at halftime.

UVA started the half on a 9-4 run and then a deep three by Jerome gave them a 42-40 lead. With a huge 23 from Hunter, they never looked back, taking a 71-56 win and punching their ticket to the second round. In t h at gam e, they played the Oklahoma Sooners. UVA ended up winning 63-51. Junior Forward Mamadi Diakite had a big 14 and 9, and the Wahoos advanced to the Sweet 16. There, they squared off with the 12th seeded Oregon Ducks. With Ty Jerome contributing 13 points and 6 assists, the Cavaliers escaped the upset bid 53-49. Then, with a chance to go to the school?s first Final Four since 1984, the only people standing in their way were the Purdue Boilermakers. In on e of t h e best gam es in NCAA Tou r n am en t Hist or y, the Hoos took down the Boilermakers. With 12 seconds left, Purdue hit some free throws to extend the lead to 3, then the Boilermakers fouled Jerome with 6 seconds to prevent him from shooting a three to tie the game. Ty made the first and intentionally missed the second and with 3.5 seconds left, freshman point guard got the ball at the other three-point line and zipped a pass to Diakite who made the buzzer beater (right) to tie the game. In OT, a late Carsen Edwards turnover with 3 seconds left and a 3 point UVA lead basically sealed the game. For the first time since 1984, UVA was back in the Final Four. In t h e Fin al Fou r , UVA battled the Auburn Tigers. They had another outstanding game vs the Tigers. Once again, it looked like the season would end. Here is the situation. 5 minutes to go. UVA by 10. Jerome picks up his fourth foul. After, Auburn goes on a 14-0 run to go up 4 with 10 seconds left. Guy hits an insane fade three to cut it to 1. They foul Jerrod Harper. Hits the first, misses the second. UVA has a chance. They have shown before, that is all they need, a chance. 1.5 seconds. Jerome inbounding. Gets it to the guy. Kyle Guy. He is fouled on a three. Can there ever be more pressure on a kid? Three free throws. Two to tie. Three to win. Bang, bang, bang. Ballgame.

Next , w it h bot h t eam s playin g f or t h eir f ir st t it le in sch ool h ist or y, the Wahoos faced off with the Texas Tech Red Raiders. With 15 seconds to go, UVA down 3. Jerome dribbles down the court, hits Hunter in the corner. Bang. Tie game. A Braxton Key block on Jarrett Culver sent the game into overtime, and there the Hoos outscored the Red Raiders 17-9 to win their first National Championship in school history. In what was his final college game as he heads off to the NBA, Hunter gave Wahoo fans one last show. He finished with 27 points and 9 rebounds, with 22 of his 27 coming in the 2nd half or overtime. Guy, who was named the Final Four 's Most Outstanding Player, finished with 24 points. All in all, UVA, for the first time in school history, are NCAA Men's Basketball National Champions.

His full name is John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. He was born in South Africa on January 3, 1892. Tolkien was bitten by a tarantula when he was three. Later, he moved to a cottage in the outskirts of the city. There he climbed trees and stole mushrooms. When they stole mushrooms the farmer would usually yell and chase him. He had gone in and out of school. His dad worked for the Bank Of Africa. J.R.R Tolkien had a younger brother named Hilary. His mother and father were Mabel Suffiel, and Arthur

Major parts of his life were being in World War I, marrying Edith Bratt, having four children, and reading mythology. Some hobbies were books, pipes, drinking tea, and caring for nature. He died at age 81 in 1873.

He wrote multiple books, though he's most famous for The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. The Hobbit is a 95,356-word book about a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. He goes on adventures with 13 dwarves and the wizard Gandalf to slay the evil dragon Smug and take back the dwarves' gold and kingdom. #2The Th e Moon Moon Landing Lan din g is W as Hoax E fakeA?!?!?! Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon. So it is said. Or maybe it was Buzz Aldrin, the second man on the moon? We all know the iconic footage of the flag going down on the moon, but do you see how there is a shadow in the bottom left side of the frame?!?!?!?! The flag is moving like it's blowing in the wind. Ok, that seems legit. But there IS NO WIND CURRENT ON THE MOON BECAUSE THERE ARE NO TIDES TO MOVE THE WIND. Interesting.

Is It Real l y Pizza-Pizza?

In October, a t w eet was responsible for convincing many that the pizza restaurant Little Caesars is actually serving pizza straight from the store bought freezer pizza, DiGiorno

That is stealing. Stealing is very bad. That is illegal. DiGiorno's could be sued that would be bad.

TIME TRAVEL

A pol l o 11 by Henry O'Hagan Apollo 11 was the first manned mission to the moon and back. Now you might have heard of Eagle, Columbia and Saturn V and might be confused on what they were. Well if you think that they were different rockets, you?re wrong. Combined, they were actually the same thing. Apollo 11 was the mission that was assigned, Saturn V (V=5) was the rocket that was launched, Columbia was the capsule that the astronauts were stationed in, and Eagle was the moonlander or lunar module, the thing that landed on the moon. The astronauts that were on Apollo 11 were Neil Armstrong, (first man on moon) Buzz Aldrin, (Eagle pilot) and Michael Collins (Columbia pilot). Only Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin actually set foot on the moon. Apollo 11 was launched on July 16, 1969 at 9:32 AM. It took exactly eight days for Apollo 11 to launch, do all of its stage detaches, get to the moon, get the lunar module in orbit, land, go back up to Columbia and head back home. The three stage detaches were 1) the first stage which got Saturn V out of earth's gravity, then detached. 2) The second stage which made Saturn V get into earth?s orbit and then detached. 3) The third stage which brought Columbia about halfway in between earth and the moon, then detached to let Columbia attach with Eagle and then go the rest of the way to the moon.

After a safe splashdown, you'd think that they would be rushed to get into coats and ties for parties and parades but that?s not what happened. When Columbia landed in the Pacific Ocean, they made the three heroes wear special outfits in case if they had been contaminated by any moon germs. They were quarantined for eighteen days before they could be interviewed by the public. After that, NASA retrieved all of the Saturn V components and reassembled the rocket to be studied and admired. To this day, Saturn V remains in NASA?s Kennedy Space Center. Also check out the new documentary on Apollo 11 at movie theatres.

Fishing By Will an d Raym on d

https://frwa.org/what-we-do/advocacy/stream-flow/

Fishing Th e Basics. Fishing is a very fun sport and hobby. Some people do it for a living both for inshore, freshwater, and offshore. It can cost lots of money to get really good gear but if you are just starting off then it can be very cheap. In sh or e fishing is very different from offshore fishing. Inshore fishing you are fishing closer to the land and usually use spinning rods (rods that reel in line by spinning in circle. Of f sh or e f ish in g is when you go way offshore in a boat and fish for bigger fish. You usually use a certain type of baitcasting reel (reel that reels in line by spinning in a backwards motion) that can handle lots of drag. Fr esh w at er fishing is also very different than other types. Freshwater fishing is where you go fishing in lakes , pond , rivers, and more freshwater bodies of water. You usually use baitcasting and spinning reels. But these reels are different. They are smaller because the fish are smaller.

GREAT GAMES

St or y by: Joaqu in Tor r es Page Design by: Dou gie Boar dm an

Th e Back st or y: In the normal world (with humans), a genius invented the SUPA-MERGE headset, this headset can combine any two things, although there was a superheating problem.

Then, the Rabbids came in their teleporting washing machine while the inventor was away. One Rabbid put on the Supa-merge headset and started merging things non-stop. In the merging rush, the supa-merge Rabbid created a Rabbid counterpart for Peach, Luigi, Yoshi, and Mario. However, the supa-merge started to overheat and went overboard and transported the Rabbids and everything around them to the Mushroom Kingdom. All the while, the inventors robotic assistant, Beep-0 stood witness.

Gam eplay: You start as an unlikely team of Mario, Rabbid Peach, and Rabbid Luigi with Beep-0 as a guide. You explore a world full of puzzles, challenges, and action-packed battle. Your mission: Find the poor rabbid with the Supa-merge headset and set things straight!

When you complete an area Beep-0 learns an ability, such as moving blocks. You can then backtrack whenever you want to the previous area and use your Beep-0?s new ability to find treasure, puzzles and new challenges to complete. This feature of the game makes me feel relieved that I can explore and find things that I missed without having to start the game over. Furthermore, once an area is complete, challenges with rewards will appear in that area for you to find. So, even after you finish an area or beat the game, there are still a lot of challenges and collectibles to find afterward.

Review : One specific thing I love is the ability to choose co-op mode. In co-op mode, you can play as a team with friends or family to win. Another thing I liked was that in the campaign you can find and earn power orbs that will upgrade your heroes. I recommend this game to people ages 7 and up.
