Impact of Giving 2022

IMPACT OF GIVING 2022

Enhancing Educational Opportunities

In the vibrant year of 2022, the culmination of a visionary dream was realised as we opened and celebrated The Jamie and Rebecca Gray Theatre which stands proudly at the front of our School. The Theatre is a testament to community philanthropy and the vision of a leading major gift donor family.

The completion of this remarkable Performing Arts space was not just a physical structure, but a celebration of imagination, innovation, and the power of storytelling. As the curtains rose for the first time, a new

era of cultural enrichment and entertainment was ushered in.

Concurrently, a steadfast fundraising endeavour took centre stage with an ambitious goal to raise $1 million for the redevelopment of the St Catherine’s Sports Centre, a transformational project that breathed new life into the venerable Dorothy Pizzey Hall. The community has rallied around this careful and clever redevelopment project, recognising the potential for athletic excellence and holistic wellbeing.

Amidst this remarkable philanthropic pursuit, the

The Gift of Giving

St Catherine’s School’s Foundation continues to support our young women of the future through the generosity of our giving community. In 2022, the Foundation delivered a variety of philanthropic opportunities through our Scholarship, Bequest, Library and Building Programs. A fundraising highlight was the completion of Phase 3 of the Dorothy Pizzey Centre

Redevelopment. The new Sports Centre provides our students with a contemporary fit-for-purpose indoor sports court, a dedicated sports and conditioning studio and a PMP (Perceptual Motor Program) and Tumbling Studio for our younger athletes. These new facilities will enhance and expand St Catherine’s existing Sports Programs with offerings in new and exciting fields.

heartbeat of education resonated strongly. Scholarships emerged as a bridge between aspirations and opportunities, the outreach to donors amassed over $182,000 to support Hardship, Rural, and Indigenous Scholarships.

The impact of this unified effort reverberated far beyond dollars and structures – it reverberated within the hearts of those who believed in the power of giving, of enabling dreams, and creating a brighter future for all. We extend our heartfelt thank you to all those who supported the Foundation in 2022.

The reimagined space was officially opened by Mrs Lauren Fox (Hewitt ’96) with 280 guests from our community. Lauren shared stories about the strength of the St Catherine’s community and the support she felt while representing Australia at the Atlanta Olympic Games during her final year at School. The opening was a wonderful way to thank our generous donors and to see the new space in action.

2

Our philanthropic reporting crosses over from 2022 to 2023 as our fundraising projects are not contained to one financial year. The statistics within this Report reflect the donor data and impact of giving for the period 1 January 2022, to 31 December 2022, however we are delighted to include major giving successes relating to our most recent fundraising appeal – the new St Catherine’s Sports Centre.

This year we were delighted to welcome many new members to the St Catherine’s Foundation. I would like to thank everyone for your continued and generous support of our bold ambitions that positively impact St Catherine’s students now, and into the future.

St Catherine’s Sports Centre

On Wednesday 9 August, we had the pleasure of hosting the formal opening of the St Catherine’s Sports Centre. Close to 300 distinguished guests attended the occasion, including all those who generously supported the Sports Centre as donors and Foundation Members.

The Foundation received a substantial gift that will facilitate the completion of the ‘Ashley Siswanto Tumbling Studio.’ This essential space will serve as a vibrant hub for the growth and development of our Early Learning and Junior School students. We are excited to present this final segment of the Sports Centre to our students and wider community.

The completion of the Sports Centre owes a debt of gratitude to the unwavering commitment of generous donors. Without their exceptional dedication, the redevelopment of this incredible new learning space would not have been possible.

Save Your Seat – 2023 Giving Day

Wednesday 29 March

The St Catherine’s School community embarked on an awe-inspiring journey that embraced the vision of our new Sports Centre. Together, we rallied around a shared purpose, surpassing expectations during the Save Your Seat Giving Day fundraising initiative. The results of this collective effort were nothing short of remarkable.

Drawing strength from the unwavering support of more than 300 current and past parents, as well as our esteemed Old Girls’ community, we transcended our initial goal of $400,000. The magnitude of your dedication and determination propelled us beyond the ordinary, raising an astounding additional $52,400 through your unwavering commitment.

House rivalry unfurled with pledges of support, aligned to St Catherine’s four Houses was nothing short of exhilarating. Amidst spirited enthusiasm and nostalgic ties, Holmes Kilbride emerged as the triumphant victor, encapsulating the spirit of unity that goes beyond the bounds of mere affiliations.

To each and every donor, to all those who participated in the House competition, and to those who saw the potential and acted upon it, we extend our heartfelt appreciation. The impact of your actions reverberates through our new Sports Centre, and more importantly, in the hearts and lives of every St Catherine’s student who will experience the transformative power of your contributions.

Tragically, Masha’s mother passed away that same year and Masha moved to Shanghai to live with her father amidst the tumultuous backdrop of the Second Sino-Japanese War. Despite the challenges, including Japanese victories and her refusal to renounce Australian citizenship, Masha spent nearly four years in a Japanese prison camp at Chapei.

Post-war, Masha married Joe Engmann, an Army Air Force Navigator, and they lived across Japan, Hawaii, Chicago, and San Francisco. Masha passed away in San Francisco on March 11, 2007. She generously bequeathed funds to St Catherine’s School, which were used to enhance the School Administration’s staff area.

Her legacy lives on through her sons Doug and Michael, who commemorated her on Giving Day by Saving a Seat in her honour.

Her Future

St Catherine’s Scholarship Program

Annually, the endowed funding from the St Catherine’s Scholarship Program provides recipients with partial or full support for their studies at St Catherine’s, giving them the critical financial assistance, motivation, and opportunity for future success.

To continue this tradition, each year we reach out to ask our scholarship donors to make a personal commitment to support our Scholarship Program, assisting rural and indigenous students or families that may be experiencing financial barriers.

This crucial funding enables students to successfully complete their education by reducing one source of stress that can be very draining and challenging for families.

6

The Melbourne Foundation

The Melbourne Foundation Scholarship stands as a testament to the power of education and philanthropy coming together to shape a brighter future. This special social justice scholarship, established by visionary donors and supporters, embodies a commitment to nurturing academic excellence, fostering leadership, and facilitating positive societal impact.

Rural Scholarships

The Rural Scholarship Fund has helped to empower rural students from across Victoria, and further afield, to ensure the promise of access, opportunity, and an exceptional education at St Catherine’s School.

Through this initiative, the connection of rural students and their families has played an important part in St Catherine’s history. Rural-based boarding students enrich our entire School community with wonderful diversity of experience and vibrancy. Our vision is to welcome as many rural students into Illawarra, our stately Boarding House, as we can.

The Melbourne Foundation Scholarship Recipients

At present, donor syndicates are providing support to five Melbourne Foundation Scholarship recipients.

With three of these students graduating in the Class of 2023, we aim to continue raising funds, thus providing scholarship assistance for future students to benefit from a St Catherine’s education. If you wish to become an annual scholarship syndicate supporter please contact Advancement Manager, Ms Kathy Hines.

Means Tested Scholarships

The ‘One Day, Two Futures’ Giving Day appeal held in 2021 established a substantial cornerstone for the ongoing provision of vital financial support for means tested scholarship recipients through the Hardship Fund. This initiative not only demonstrated the remarkable capacity of our community to come together, but it has set in motion a sustained effort to address the financial obstacles faced by families in need.

As a result, two students have embarked on their educational journeys at St Catherine’s School this year, thanks to the transformative ‘One Day, Two Futures’ fundraising campaign.

Through the continued dedication to this special means tested fund, we will empower those who face adversity, transforming lives and creating a more equitable and inclusive educational landscape for these students and their families.

As a courtesy we protect the privacy of scholarship recipients and their families whilst they are studying at St Catherine’s School. However, we look forward to sharing their stories with you once they have graduated and as they progress outside the Heyington Gates.

St Catherine’s Circle

Bequest Society

The St Catherine’s Circle stands as a testament to the profound significance of leaving a legacy. It represents a community of individuals who understand the enduring impact of their contributions, not only in the present but for generations to come. Through the act of bequests, visionary members of our community ensure their values and commitment to education persist beyond their lifetimes, creating a legacy that echoes through time.

At the heart of this endeavour lies the Endowment Fund, a cornerstone of sustainable support that nurtures the aspirations of future students.

By nurturing this fund, members of the St Catherine’s Circle empower young minds to embark on transformative educational journeys, regardless of financial constraints.

In 2022, St Catherine’s School received a significant bequest from the Estate of Miss Angela Glover (’58). During her years at St Catherine’s, Angela developed a love of Fine Arts and Music. Angela’s career entailed secretarial jobs including DEFAT and being sent to Vietnam in this capacity. She spent many years playing amateur and chamber music on the viola.

St Catherine’s Circle exemplifies the power of unity in shaping the future and stands as an embodiment of the principle that true philanthropy transcends the immediate and touches the lives of those yet to come.

Thanking our 11 Honorary Members

“Honorary Foundation Members” refers to individuals who have been granted a special, honorary status within the St Catherine’s Foundation. Unlike members who support the Foundation through financial contributions, honorary members are typically recognised by their service and given this status as a mark of honour. It is a special way for the Foundation to show appreciation and recognise individuals who have made a significant impact or have a strong connection to St Catherine’s School.

New Foundation Member Story

DR DIANE HU

What were your main reasons for selecting St Catherine’s School?

It was a very rational choice after visiting most girls’ schools in Melbourne and upon consultation with experts from the Victorian Department of Education and Training. It was also a decision we have been increasingly thankful for; with changes and little things we observe in Isabel every day. Most recently, when I brought her to La Gioconda in concert by Jonas Kaufmann, she quietly sat through the three hours and proudly told me they had already learnt about it in class.

What hopes do you have for St Catherine’s and your daughters in the coming years?

The path we have chosen for Isabel has been one of the hardest, moving from China to Australia at 10 and spending her first two years (during COVID) in a progressive public school’s bilingual program before joining St Catherine’s. We are super proud of where she is now. We hope she can better enjoy and be proud of her achievements so far, relax and make the most out of her St Catherine’s years.

In your time at St Catherine’s so far, what do you believe makes our School special?

The people. Everyone, from Ms Carroll to each teacher, has made their best efforts to offer the best education experience possible to the girls. The parents are amazing, particularly the Asian-Australian community who have been a constant inspiration for us.

What motivated you to support the St Catherine’s School Foundation?

We are just one of all the St Catherine’s parents who want similar things for their daughters and would be more than happy to contribute in any way they can, as part of the community.

Why is the generosity of giving important in a community?

Generosity and giving are powerful messages that can quickly spread in a community. We are honoured to be part of that.

Tell us something that we may be surprised to learn about you and your family.

Isabel and I were recently invited to the former Victorian Governor the Honourable Linda Dessau’s dinner to celebrate the achievements and contributions of recent migrants. It was such a touching moment for us who have settled in Melbourne for the past three and half years. It was a precious alumnae moment too, with Linda being both St Catherine’s (Isabel) and Melbourne University (me) alumnae. Linda was absolutely amazed to discover a young guest from her old beloved School.
