Saints Soirée Auction 2025 Catalog

February 2025

HEADMASTER’S LETTER

Dear Saints Supporters,

We are thrilled for our Saints community to come together at Main Street Station in downtown Richmond for our biennial auction, Saints Soirée. This Mardi Gras-inspired event is sure to be a festive and exciting evening for everyone.

In addition to celebrating our common bond as Saints, the auction allows the School to provide important facilities enhancements for our boys. Two years ago, we identified the need to reimagine the divisional libraries as spaces to better serve the needs of the boys and how they learn in the 21st century.

Our 2023 auction helped fund improvements to the Lower and Middle School libraries; work that was completed before the beginning of this school year. I encourage you to visit campus and see the beautiful transformation and upgraded functionality of each space. The money raised during the 2025 auction will fund the renovation and upgrades to Memorial Library, our Upper School space.

The newly refurbished Upper School Memorial Library will include traditional elements of beautiful wooden bookcases, task lighting, and comfortable seating as well as spaces appropriate for individual study or collaborative work. The space will also provide librarians with better functionality to collaborate with faculty to develop creative projects that enhance and complement classroom learning while also serving as a hub of information. Every boy will benefit from this improved space as he makes his way through the Upper School during his time at St. Christopher’s.

Enjoy this special evening complete with delicious food and drinks, and please give generously in support of our boys.

Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler!

ART

201. ORIGINAL ARTWORK BY JIM BUMGARDNER

Jim Bumgardner is an artist whose work blends traditional and digital mediums, often exploring the intersection of nature and technology. His pieces are characterized by intricate patterns, geometric forms, and vibrant colors that create dynamic, visually stimulating compositions. Bumgardner frequently incorporates organic motifs, such as flowing rivers or landscapes, merging them with digital aesthetics and algorithmic design. His work is in the collections of The North Carolina Museum of Art, The Chrysler Museum of Art, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Art, among others. River Window, a pastel, watercolor, gouache, and graphite on paper that measures 22½” x 30”, depicts his favorite view from his Deltaville, Virginia home. Incredibly rare today, these pastel and watercolor paintings are timeless representations of the natural beauty of the river.

Bond Millen Gallery/Ashley Millen

202. CATHERINE BOTH

A state and national award-winning artist (and St. Catherine’s art teacher), Catherine Both received her BFA degree from Florida State University and completed her graduate work at the University of Richmond. Her art is noted for its diversity and vibrant colors. In addition to a variety of painting subjects, she has designed and painted murals and furniture. “I want to create art that helps people appreciate the beauty in life and heighten one’s senses to the ordinary which transcends to the extraordinary.” This original and extraordinary acrylic on canvas painting will be a welcome addition to any home!

Catherine Both

203. TSVETI SOWERS

Don’t miss out on this one-of-a-kind, oil-on-panel painting by renowned, plein air artist and St. Christopher’s parent, Tsveti Sowers. Born in Bulgaria in a small town on the Danube River just west of the Black Sea, Tsveti trained in Silistra. Her work is inspired by the natural world and the transforming power of light. She moved to the United States in 2006 to continue her painting and is presently represented by Quirk Gallery and Crossroads Art Center in Richmond. This 11” x 14” painting of Wilton Hall and the surrounding landscape captures a beautiful day on St. Christopher’s School campus and will be a treasure in any Saints’ home.

206. HOPE MORGAN

Hope Morgan spends her days guiding our Lower School boys in Art. In her free time, she is an abstract painter whose practice is driven by the beauty of contained forms, how they exist in the natural world, and how we respond to them. Her pieces tell a story of meditative problem-solving through color, shape, and line. Her non-traditional landscapes are often informed by time spent in the mountains.

Hope Morgan

207. EMMA KNIGHT

There is no mistaking Emma’s specific artistic style. Windswept, puffy, organic shapes fill the canvas and take the place of foliage, leaving the viewer with a sense of curiosity and wonder. Her paintings reveal an atmospheric sensibility. Line, shape, and color work in concert to evoke the mood of a place and time rather than clear and detached details. In her newest works, her abstraction has gone a step further. No longer representing actual space, the organic structures still conjure sensations of life. They recall the petals of chrysanthemum or carnation. Or perhaps their squiggly shapes suggest creatures found in the waters of a lake.

Emma Knight

208. CARY THIS HOME

A well-known artist in Central Virginia, Susan Cary’s work centers around life on her farm in Goochland County. Her art combines painting and drawing styles, and her subject matter reflects laid-back but poignantly beautiful scenery of country life. She prepares her surfaces of canvas and reclaimed materials in various ways to ensure a different and fresh base for every grouping of paintings. Susan then draws, paints, prints, scrubs, stencils, and rubs on and off different paints, mediums, and marks. As the work progresses, she finds the perfect balance of color, line, texture, and composition for each unique painting. Susan shows her work in galleries, art centers, local businesses, and restaurants in Richmond and surrounding cities and counties.

Susan Cary

209. CHRIS SHANDS

Chris Shands is a Richmond contemporary artist whose work is influenced by her travels in the Far

East as a child. The use of bold but feminine colors, coupled with a touch of gold leaf brings a delicate nature to her abstract and figurative paintings. Chris begins many of her paintings by layering rich colors using random brush strokes. Utilizing various tools, she begins the process of pushing and pulling the paint, manipulating the layers, and editing out what is no longer needed. This process allows the history of the many layers to reveal themselves on the canvas.

Chris Shands

210. MEGAN PRATT

Kindergarten Daydreams, a large framed original mixed media abstract painting, will surely find a special place in your home. Artist Megan Pratt’s artistic practice is rooted in a wide range of mediums, including watercolor, acrylics, gouache, oil pastels, and charcoal, often layered onto canvas and paper to create depth and texture. She embraces the experience of creating something unexpected through her use of mixed mediums. Her vibrant pieces have great detail that give each piece unique interest. Megan enjoys the process of working with interior designers, galleries, and directly with clients to evoke a bold statement when you enter a room. Megan’s work can be found locally at Palette Home and Gramercy Collective.
