Since man discovered wood, he has fashioned it into an extraordinary array of things: useful things, of course, but things that also came to express the skill and artistry of those who made them. And until the Industrial Revolution those things were made from the log with hand tools. Shaping wood with a few simple tools connects your intellect, your body, and the wood in a way that can only be understood and appreciated through experience. Join me for five days, mornings and afternoons. Create something useful and beautiful from wood sawn from a log, split into appropriate sizes, shaped with a few hand tools and your own artistic vision.

Summer Health 9 covers all of the information studied in the regular semester class.We will focus on physical components of human health. Throughout the course we will look at what behaviors and choices will help students live as long and as happy a life as possible. In this course we will read and discuss the classic models for making moral decisions and examine contemporary ethical issues occurring in our society today; we will pay particular attention to bioethical topics. Included in our survey are Cultural Relativism, Natural Law, Divine Command, Egoism, Utilitarianism and Kantianism. Assessments will be in the form of active participation, daily tests and three papers, each due on Monday. On Fridays we will take advantage of an online component where students will be on their own to complete the assignment.We will not meet formally on Fridays.

In this camp, students design and program their own App! Over the course of the week students are introduced to the development process as they design and program a game for a mobile device. Students will work within a Software Development Kit where they can program the if-then statements that control how their App works.They will learn foundations of development as they incorporate new functionality into their game.They will also learn the fundamentals of Level Design as they strategically incorporate gameplay mechanics into their project. At the end of camp, students can download their app onto their own phone, tablet, or iPod!

What’s better than reading great books and stirring up yummy treats? This class will explore the world of “What If ” through Laura Numeroff ’s books If you Give a Mouse a Cookie, If You Give Moose a Muffin, If you Give a Pig a Pancake, and If you Give a Cat a Cupcake. Students will research facts about each animal, read, sequence events, and compare and contrast elements of the story. In addition, we’ll fine tune mathematical skills as we measure and mix-up cookies, cupcakes, pancakes, and muffins. Students will use what they’ve learned to create math story problems and write their own If You Give…story. Don’t miss out on the wonderful world of “What If ”.

In this camp, students will create their own 3D Video Game! They will design their game from start to finish, beginning with a flat, empty world and ending with a polished, professional-looking game.Throughout this process they will learn the fundamentals of 3D Game Development. To develop the games, students will use OWL Game Creator, which we have developed specifically with our target age range in mind.This software program equips students with the knowledge and skills they need to pursue Game Design at a professional level. Students will learn level design, texturing, volumes, lighting and more to build out their 3D world – they can create anything they can imagine. Students will also learn Game Scripting so that they can program the functionality of their game. At the end of camp, each student will be able to download their own 3D Game and play it at home!

This course is designed to introduce students to understanding of the compositional and design elements in photography. It will focus on the workings of the 35mm digital SLR camera. Students will learn about aperture, shutter, ISO, white balance and how to consistently get a good quality photograph. In this class, students will learn how to operate their digital cameras more effectively through manual image capture. Additionally, class participants will receive a comprehensive introduction to digital darkroom techniques (Adobe Photoshop). Daily assignments will occur both on campus and off through the use of online tools. Image sharing during class will help students troubleshoot while developing a creative eye. Students are expected to provide a digital camera with full manual adjustments (automatic settings only will not work), their camera manual, a laptop with Adobe Creative CS4 Suite, and a thumb drive.

No need to pack your bags, update your passport, or purchase an overseas ticket - Spain is coming to St. Christopher’s! This two-week Spanish immersion course will be taught by a native speaker from El Centro de Lenguas e Intercambio Cultural in Sevilla, Spain, renowned throughout Europe for its unparalleled Spanish as a Foreign Language program. Students will build their confidence in speaking and boost their knowledge of grammar skills using a method unlike any they've ever experienced before. All classes are active and communicative, incorporating games, debates, teamwork and competition. Upper school course will focus on the topics students find to be the most challenging. This is a great way to boost skills and build upon the material stressed in Upper School language courses.

Here’s the chance to get together with friends to work on your tennis skills.We placed the St. Christopher’s Tennis Academy at the beginning of the summer so you can take all that you learn with you and showcase your talents throughout the summer.The summer program is designed for beginners, novices and seasoned players. Participants will be grouped together by age and ability. If you are a beginner, you will be taught the proper fundamentals of the game with an emphasis on proper footwork and stroke production.We stress the importance of “no bad habits” so the improvement process will not be restricted. If you are a more experienced player, we identify your weaknesses and improve upon them to enable you to take your game to another level. Eight outdoor courts in our tennis facility, plus five indoor courts in Bolling Field House, make our facilities some of the best around. Come see for yourself! Our “beginners” program for kids between the ages of 5 and 8 years old is designed to introduce the fundamentals to children that have never played before.We will use undersized racquets along with other modern teaching techniques that will develop hand-eye coordination at an early age.
