2015 Annual Report news from your friends & family in Steamboat’s local dance community
A Letter from the President As I enter into my fourth year as President of Steamboat Dance Theatre (SDT), I can’t help but marvel at the dedication that our Board, limited staff, dancers, and community members regularly commit to our organization. It is this loyalty and dedication that has allowed SDT to reach some great milestones programmatically and organizationally this year. For example, in 2015 we were able to provide more funding through dance scholarships than ever before, host an extremely successful Annual Concert, and organize our first community dance party (Senior Prom). We were also able to retain our staff person, diversify our funding portfolio, participate in Colorado Gives Day for the first time, and recruit more members than ever before. All told this year has demonstrated how with hard work, dedication and passion SDT can continue to evolve into a more effective and beneficial organization. I invite you to learn more about our organization and get more involved whether you love to dance, love to watch dance, or love to learn about dance. Happy dancing - Kristen Jespersen

Employee of the Year! Meg Southcott is Steamboat Dance Theatre’s Marketing and Fundraising Coordinator. She was hired in 2014 and has helped our organization expand the reach of our programs and to raise more funding for those programs. Meg was instrumental to our successes in 2015. Meg is from Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. She is a graduate (’12) of the Meadows School of the Arts and Simmons School of Education at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX earning her BFA degree in Dance Performance and BS in Applied Physiology & Sport Management, respectively. With many dance experiences under her belt, Meg is happy to be a part of the SDT team. She will also serve as Artistic Director for the 2016 Annual Concert. We look forward to another great year with Meg and are seeking more funding to increase the amount of hours we may utilize her talents for the organization. 2

2015 Annual Concert Recap The Annual Concert is a community dance performance that SDT hosts, organizes, and funds each year. We invite the entire community to choreograph and audition for our Annual Concert and pride ourselves on being able to cast dancers of all levels in the show. Each year we have about 200 volunteers dance, choreograph and produce our concert and nearly 2,000 community members attend. In 2015 Steamboat Dance Theatre presented its 43rd Annual Concert. The concert provides a unique opportunity for the Steamboat community to learn, perform, and observe a wide variety of dance. As our largest fundraiser, concert proceeds allow us to keep our organization alive and implement our other programs, including the Scholarship Program and Community Outreach Program.
This year over 120 performers brought 16 diverse pieces to life on the stage. Jazz, contemporary, hip-hop, tap, hula, Latin, Irish, and belly dance were represented. From Disney princes and princesses to synchronized swimmers, mad scientists, and the beautiful acrobatics of our aerial dancers, the audience was entertained and delighted by the talent of our local dancers and choreographers. This production would not be possible without the dedication of our production team, tech crew, choreographers, and dancers who volunteer many hours of their time. We are also grateful for the sponsors and donors who support our show—we could not do it without them. Steamboat Dance Theatre is truly unique in its ability to provide this performance opportunity to our local community.

STEAMBOATDANCETHEATRE.ORG Through our Scholarship Program, SDT provides dance class scholarships to community members of all ages in need of financial assistance.
2015 ANNUAL REPORT
Scholarship Program
This program has proven to be extremely popular in the Steamboat community and has grown exponentially over the past few years. Over the past six years the total scholarship amount requested has more than tripled and this year we offered the most scholarships in the history of our organization. We were able to fund 100% of applications received at an average of 50% per applicant’s requested funds.
Over the past four years, the amount we have awarded in scholarships has grown by 295% in response to the growing demand for this program.
1st Position Scholarships Our 1st Position Scholarships are offered to local community members for the purposes of attending locally taught dance classes at studios throughout town.
5th Position Scholarships We created a new category of dance scholarships called "Fifth Position Scholarships” which are larger scholarships offered to dance students planning to participate in competitions or more advanced dance workshops. These requests are larger than those made through our traditional scholarship program because they cover costs such as enrollment fees for competitions and tuition for workshops and intensives.
Sponsor a Dancer Scholarships SDT has created another type of scholarship program called “Sponsor a Dancer”. This program allows donors to contribute directly to individual dancers who have been nominated by their studios based on leadership, talent, commitment, and financial need. Donations can be made through the dancer profiles on the SDT website. Because the donations are made to the Steamboat Dance Theatre, a 501c3 organization, they are tax deductible. The success of this program was astounding, with over $4,500 of donations made to support two phenomenal young dancers that had been nominated by their studios. We are excited to support two more nominations in 2016. To support one of our dancers, please go to our website:

Scholarship Recipient Testimonials “The Steamboat Dance Theatre scholarship has helped me so much! It is literally the only reason why I can progress and move forward with dance. I am dancing in 9 classes a week along with The Wiz of Oz rehearsals so far this year and it feels phenomenal. I am hoping, in the future, to be a professional dancer. To work towards that, I am taking as many opportunities as possible to move forward in dance. Thank you for all you do for me.”- Timothy Lee
“I want to thank you for the scholarships I have received this past year. Dance is very important to me, I have been in dance classes since I was 3 years old! Receiving the scholarships has helped me to continue dance. Ny father works in the construction industry and had hip surgery so he has not been working as much as he'd like to be. Ny mother works for the school district and doesn't make a lot of money. I dropped soccer so that I could participate in more dance classes. I am also involved in Dance Showcase at the High School. Community Outreach The goal of the Community Enrichment Program is to outreach to the local community at large (dancers and non-dancers alike) to share and create diverse dance experiences. To accomplish this goal, SDT coordinates a number of events and programs. For example we host the Dance on Film event, offer the School outreach Program, host Master Classes, and other community dance classes.
School Outreach Through our School Outreach Program, we invite professional dancers and performers to host assemblies and educational events at schools within the Steamboat Springs School Districts. This year, through the School Outreach Program SDT offered a mentorship to high-school dancers participating in the high school’s annual Dance Showcase event. This is a dance concert organized, choreographed and performed in by high school students.
National Dance Day Co-President Nigel Lythgoe of So You Think You Can Dance and Dizzy Feet Foundation launched National Dance Day in 2010. National Dance Day is an annual celebration that takes place on the last Saturday in July. This grassroots campaign encourages Americans to embrace dance as a fun and positive way to maintain good health and fight obesity. In celebration of NDD Steamboat Dance Theatre hosts National Dance Week a full week of free dance classes offered at multiple dance studios throughout the city. This year we offered Irish dance, Zumba, Two-step, Tribal Fusion, and Belly Dance.
Senior Prom This year, SDT hosted our first annual community dance party. The purpose of this event was to offer a community dance event that invited dancers and non-dancers alike to come out and enjoy dance in a fun, comfortable environment. The theme of the event was Senior Prom from the decades and attendees dressed up in prom attire from decades past. We had approximately 100 people attend the prom event and received nothing but positive feedback. 7

2015 ANNUAL REPORT
Financial Summary In 2015 SDT earned a total of $93,150 and revenue of $8,743. As shown in the table our Income increased by 30% compared to the year prior. Over the past three years out Revenue numbers have fluctuated. In 2015 we increased the total revenue by 60% as compared to 2014, but 20% under the amount raised in 2013. This is a reflection of an increase in programmatic and organizational costs due to increased capacity and a growing demand for our Scholarship Programs. Notably, our financial performance in 2015 was strong enough that in spite of a significant growth in our expenses from year to year we have been able to grow our revenue as well. This is a direct reflection of our efforts to implement our funding plan, increase our capacity and attract new types of funding. We aim to continue to grow our revenue over the next few years so as to be able to expand our programs.
As shown in Diagram 1, the greatest portion of our income is generated through events specifically our Annual Concert, however in 2015 we have seen a more equal distribution across funding categories which is good sign that we are succeeding in meeting our goal of establishing a more diversified funding portfolio. As we enter into 2016 we aspire to continue Diagram 2 illustrates the percentage of our income that is spent on our various programs. As shown the Annual Concert and our Scholarship Program are our two greatest expenses.
