STEAMBOAT’S FOOD TRUCKS OFFER A LOT MORE THAN FAST SNACKS

Food trucks are becoming more popular throughout Colorado’s mountain towns, offering a fun, convenient, affordable and unique experience. Food trucks are also becoming more of a fixture in Steamboat, especially during the busy summer months when town is packed with the crowds who come for the non-stop events calendar. From the Steamboat Springs Free Summer Concert Series and the weekly Farmer’s Market to the seamless partnerships with local breweries, food trucks are a way for local foodies to become more immersed in the local community with fun, signature fare.

There’s a lot more to these mini mobile kitchens than abbreviated menus and fast eats. And while you can expect a rotation of different trucks and a wide variety of fare to make an appearance in town, check out these locally owned trucks that we be here all summer long, run by talented local chefs whose stories are part of the fabric of the Steamboat community and what makes it so unique.

SKULL CREEK GREEK

A second-generation restauranteur with three brickand-mortar restaurants in Steamboat, the award-winning Skull Creek Greek food truck is a labor of love for Jason Partovi. It all began with a vintage 1930s sheepherder’s wagon Partovi inherited when he moved his family to Steamboat from Texas and purchased the business in 2018. “The food truck got us out to fun summer events where we could really engage with the community and meet a lot of people. It’s been an amazing opportunity,” Partovi says. Skull Creek Greek was already established as a local’s favorite, a tradition Partovi has upheld by winning “Best of the Boat” for the 9th year in a row.

Partovi says having brick-and-mortar restaurants (Skull Creek Greek, Hypnotic Chicken and Wild Plum) allows him to keep business going all year long, especially during the cold winter months when the weather isn’t conducive to food trucks, (other than their regular

presence at the WinterWonderGrass Music Festival). He looks forward to busting out the sheep herder’s wagon in the summer for public events and private parties.

“We do graduation parties, rehearsal dinners, weddings, birthdays, community events... all kinds of fun stuff.”

The bread and butter (or pita and tzatziki as the case may be) are the Free Concert Series and the Saturday Farmers Market. “When you have live music, good food and drinks, that’s the recipe for a fun summertime event in Steamboat,” Partovi says. “Any event where you can bring people together.” Partovi is thrilled to continue the legacy of the Skull Creek Greek food truck as a staple in the community.

Skull Creek Greek offers favorite Greek staples including pitas, served with traditional lamb and beef (gyro), chicken or falafel, all served with house made tzatziki.

“It’s a simple menu, flavorful street food that tastes great with a beer,” Partovi says. “We focus on consistency, quality, speed of service and keeping it affordable.”

Ultimately, Partovi says it’s about being immersed in the community, getting out and working alongside other local businesses. “It’s the love we get from the community that keeps us going.”

MAUI ARTISAN SOURDOUGH CREATIONS

A relative newcomer to town, Mark Willard moved to Steamboat from Maui in 2023 and fortunately, brought his signature sourdough with him. A seasoned chef who earned his stripes working at five-star resorts in his native San Diego and on Maui, Willard fell in love with the artistry of sourdough. His first venture was Alchemy, a café in Lahaina where he baked his bread and then eventually expanded into wholesale, with accounts across the island, and that’s when Maui Artisan Sourdough was born.

When Willard and his wife arrived in Steamboat, they knew they wanted to do something new. “We decided to build a food trailer and come out and have a little fun,” he says. Willard debuted his breads, featured in a variety of loaf variations and for sandwiches, at the Boat Yard last summer. His breads are all organic and made only from wild yeast starter with long fermentation (20 hours or more) for gluten breakdown. “It creates an easily digestible bread,” Willard says. Willard offers boules in several varieties, including plain, cheddar, roasted garlic, roasted garlic parmesan, super seed (hemp, flax, chia and sesame) and Hawaiian black sea salt. Pre-order a boule (48 hours advance

notice required for proper fermentation) or sample a mini sourdough, baked in cupcake tins to find your favorite. His sandwich board includes turkey, barbecue chicken, barbecue chicken club, signature pastrami and loaded grilled cheese, all served on plain sourdough baguettes. On the side, grab a garden salad, sweet potato fries or the now-famous truffle tots, and there are even chicken tenders for the kids. This is a true mom-and-pop shop, Willard says. “I don’t have any employees. My wife and I run the company.”

This summer, they’ll have a permanent home at the Yampa Valley Hop House on 12th Street, Friday to Sunday during lunch hours, 12–4 pm. “We’ve developed a pretty good following and are looking forward to serving the local community,” Willard says. Looks like sourdough breads in Steamboat are on the rise.

SKIPPA & LISA ISLAND CUISINE

Weldon Adams, locally known as “Skippa,” first made his way to Steamboat from Jamaica in 2004 as part of a cooking program sponsored by his home country. He worked as a lead cook at Thunderhead for the winter and in the summer, would make his way to cook for the Island House Hotel in Mackinac Island, Michigan, where he met his wife Lisa in 2008. The couple continued going back and forth and Skippa paid his dues in some of Steamboat’s busiest kitchens, including Rex’s and The Old Town Pub, where his decade-long tenure endured four different owners.

Last year, Skippa and Lisa Hansel decided to strike out on their own with Skippa & Lisa Island Cuisine, a food truck that posts weekly at the Farmer’s Market and other big events around town. “We love the community and family-friendly vibe in Steamboat, and we’re raising our kids here, so we’re not going to Michigan anymore,” Skippa says. Lisa also recently completed her Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration and felt ready to branch out with the food truck after the couple catered some weddings and private parties.

Their focus is, of course, Caribbean food, using jerk spices and every part of the pineapple in a variety

of ways, including as a vessel for some of their most popular dishes, like jerk chicken with rice and beans (or substitute with other protein options like pork, shrimp, salmon or jerk tofu). The jerk spice is medium to accommodate a wider variety of palates, and the duo serves up other Caribbean flavors like fried plantains and pineapple salsa. Another favorite is the five-salad taco bowl with choice of protein served in a taco shell. Kiddos love the Island Tenders, chicken tenders with a honey mustard island sauce.

Say hello to Skippa & Lisa this summer every Saturday at the Farmer’s Market. They’ll also be at the Steamboat Free Concert Series and are available for private parties and weddings. “If there’s an event, I’ll do it,” Skippa says. One more thing’s for sure—he’ll put a pineapple in it (or put it into a pineapple).

Q LIVE CREW BBQ

Talking barbeque with pitmaster Dean Montgomery is like talking to a poet about words or a sommelier about wine. It’s all about nuance and subtlety but also detail, precision and technique, a process that strives for perfection and yields something between art and mastery. What he calls “a really expensive hobby” became his life’s passion and ultimately, an award-winning business. After all those competitions, “award-winning” are in fact, two words attached to several of his offerings.

Surprisingly, the Missouri native didn’t discover barbeque in his home state, but in Colorado, where he started entering competitions. “Once you win an award, even as a rookie, you catch the bug wanting more.”

Montgomery originally moved to Steamboat in 1998 to be a ski bum, working as a lift op and taking jobs in food service, including bartending and working as a sushi chef—an ode to his mother’s Japanese heritage.

Dean returned to Missouri to start a new venture in opening an Italian restaurant. “All I could think about was barbeque and I realized, I should not be selling pasta,” he says. He pulled the trigger on his own trailer and smoker, and to towed it from Georgia back home to Steamboat in 2014.

Montgomery has created his own brand of Coloradostyle barbeque, “I make a bunch of sauces from different regions to give people variations, but my barbeque is Colorado-influenced.” he says. It’s all about tweaking the various components, from spices and sauces to the type of wood used for smoking. “All those things combined are what leads to an original flavor.”

His menu is comprised of the basics like ribs, brisket, and pork, but also features event-friendly dishes like BBQ nachos and his famous Pulled Pork Sundae, featuring layers of Hawaiian sweet bread, pit smoked beans, pulled pork and coleslaw topped with mashed potatoes and a cherry tomato to look like a sundae. He also does chicken teriyaki bowls as an ode to his mom. His sauces include sweet sauce, spicy sauce, teriyaki (how his mom taught him) and award-winning mustard.

You can also find him at all the summer’s big events, and he’s available to do private parties with customized menus. Mostly, he’s just happy to bring the world of BBQ to Steamboat. “It’s all about passion,” he says. And maybe snatching up just a few more of those awards. 970.846.5952 | qlivecrewbbq@yahoo.com //Q

REDEFINING MOUNTAIN

HOME EXTERIOR DESIGN

Long before Steamboat became the world-renowned resort town it is today, the concept of a mountain home was defined by the log cabins erected by ranchers and farmers, with practicality being the defining factor of the dwelling’s style.

As Steamboat evolved into a destination resort with luxury homes, many of those mountain references remained prominent in exterior home design. Materials such as timber, river rock, and other types of wood and stone were used to reference mountain living. Even

more recently, reclaimed barnwood and the Japaneseinspired burnt wood technique known as Shou Sugi Ban became popular to evoke a rustic vibe, including in homes with modern architectural styles.

We caught up with Hans Berend, CEO and Co-Founder of GB Design Build, a Steamboat-based architecture and construction firm, to find out what’s trending in 2024. “We’ve been in business for over 25 years, experimenting with materials and learning which ones work and which ones don’t,” he says. “In Colorado, it’s essential to choose materials that last and require minimal maintenance due to our extreme climate. We’re seeing more new products engineered to withstand severe temperature swings, harsh sun, and moisture. These products are proving to stand the test of time better than what we used to have.”

It makes sense that Berend would consider function an integral part of design, surely a result of two decades of working in architecture and construction under the same roof. That said, new materials have opened doors to many design possibilities. The name of the game in 2024 is a less-is-more approach with cleaner, simpler exteriors that evoke seamless design. Here is what today’s dream mountain homes are made of:

SIDING

LESS IS MORE

“It’s frustrating when you invest in siding that looks cool but then completely fails,” Berend says. Fortunately, new materials are engineered to create long-lasting siding that is also low maintenance. Steel continues to be at the forefront for durable construction and a modern aesthetic. “If we’re using steel columns and beams, we’ll often use steel panels too,” Berend says. It’s highly resistant to the elements as long as it’s properly protected with the right finish and only needs refinishing every 5–10 years, depending on exposure.

Wood siding that’s been thermally modified, making it more stable and less prone to weathering, insects, rot, and checking, has come a long way. Products like Thermory’s Thermo Ash and Thermo Oak will last longer than ever before with a lower risk of aging from UV and moisture. “It’s still wood and feels like wood but doesn’t require the regular maintenance of natural wood,” Berend says. It comes in a wide variety

of plank styles and sizes, siding, and decking, offering architects numerous options to achieve different styles and aesthetics. Metal has also become trendy with state-of-the-art metal panel systems, similar to those used in large-scale commercial construction (think of large buildings in cities). “This allows us to use stone cladding with large-scale stone panels fastened with a grid of mechanical attachments and clips, creating a natural rain screen—creating a grid of geometric stone that’s clean and visually appealing,” Berend says.

In general, the trend of using many different materials in one house is phasing out. “Many designers are using one material for bump outs, another for the main gable, and yet another for dormers to emphasize massing, but it can become excessive. I think that trend, in some instances, has run its course,” Berend says. “Our team is trying to use fewer materials in homes and make them simpler and less busy.”

WINDOWS & DOORS ROOM WITH A VIEW

Beautiful views will always be the cornerstone of mountain home design, Berend says, which means a lot of glass. Like siding, the focus in 2024 is on simplicity and seamlessness. “We’re always experimenting and trying new things. It’s about simplifying and reducing the number of elements accompanying the glass.”

That’s more achievable now than ever thanks to new window and door products. “Contemporary units have cleaner, less bulky sashes and frames, giving a more streamlined look with less visual clutter,” Berend says.

He’s been using all-aluminum windows with minimal frames, for example. This marks a departure from the farmhouse, mountain cabin, and cottage-style windows popular in the early 2000s.

When it comes to doors, less is more in terms of eliminating barriers between indoors and outdoors.

“The big trend for a while now is being able to open whole walls to the outdoors,” Berend says. There are various products that can achieve this, from bifold doors or lift-and-slide pocket doors that disappear into the wall, to newer multi-panel doors that retract and stack automatically with the push of a button.

Glass doors are also gaining popularity for the front entry, partly due to their durability, Berend says. This is especially true when dealing with a western or

southern exposure, where wooden entry doors tend to deteriorate over time. In addition to their resilience, glass entry doors can be captivating. “We want to create some drama around entering a home. It’s almost like setting up for the perfect photograph. As architects, we’re looking for that perfect image,” Berend says. “Imagine a glass door revealing a fascinating corridor, flanked by an opposing window, hinting at the views beyond. It gives a taste of magic, enticing you to step inside and experience it,” he says. “We want it to be dramatic.”

THAT’S THE

SPIRIT

Discovering Steamboat’s Homegrown Distilleries

We all know the beer flows like wine in most Colorado mountain towns, but there are also spirits to be had as distilleries move in next to their cousins. These locally owned businesses take the term handcrafted cocktails to a whole new level with spirits distilled and bottled on site. Come summer, there’s nothing better than soaking in the sun with a tasty cocktail made from—and with—a whole lot of Steamboat spirit.

ROUTT DISTILLERY

Brad Christensen isn’t some hobby distiller who decided to make a go of the business—he’s got a doctorate in this stuff. The Wisconsin native studied enology and viticulture (wine making and grape growing) and earned a doctorate in Economic Geography at UC Davis. “My research was focused on high value agriculture products, but I was mostly focused on the wine industry,” he says. “I also took a course in distilling just so I could have that in my back pocket.” When his wife took a job that landed them in Steamboat, in a state where grains are more abundant than grapes, he began plans to open his own distillery in 2019.

After COVID put a serious damper on construction, Christensen took over, completing the interior buildout with his brother’s help. “I know that building inside and out because I either installed or fixed all the control systems myself,” he says. He ßnally hit the ground running summer 2022 with what he has dubbed a “grain to glass craft distillery.” The focus is creating high quality, unique products using 100 percent Colorado grains that are fermented, distilled and bottled on site in the Steamboat facility. The full lineup of spirits includes different varieties of gin, vodka, and whiskey.

The gin line includes Summer Gin, featuring a bright citrus and floral in what is commonly referred to as

“new American style.” The Winter Gin is characterized by a savory bent, using cardamom and nutmeg for a spicy finish. There’s also a special fall release, Sarvis Gin, made with locally harvested sarvis berries that are soaked in Summer Gin for five weeks and barley harvested from the western slope.

What the whiskey lineup lacks in age (the oldest barrel is 20 months old) it more than makes up for in quality and flavor. Storm Mountain Single Malt Whiskey has 10 percent chocolate malts in the mash fill to create a darker flavor.

“The notes of chocolate and coffee really complements bitters, so it’s perfect in an Old Fashion,” Christensen says. On the lighter side is Emerald Mountain Single Malt Whiskey, a Japanese style single

malt made from 100 percent malted barley that’s lighter and brighter, and ideal for highballs.

The tasting room is open to the public Fridays and Saturdays from 1–6 pm, where Christensen is on-hand to answer questions and play mixologist, creating handcrafted cocktails with a variety of concoctions made in-house, from aperitifs to amaros. “I’m kind of a one-man band,” he says. Don’t miss the outdoor patio in the summer where—in true Steamboat style—there’s even a play area for kids. We’ll toast to that. //routtdistillery.com

MYTHOLOGY

DISTILLERY

If you thought skiing and whiskey drinking went hand and hand, you already have a lot in common with Mythology Distillery founder Scott Yeats, whose business was inspired by a trip to Alaska where days skiing steep lines was punctuated by sharing stories over a glass of whiskey with friends each night. “We started Mythology to create great whiskey, gin and

vodka while hanging out with our friends and sharing stories of adventures and travels.” Yeats says.

He took that passion back to Denver, where he opened Mythology in the Lower Highlands neighborhood in 2018, and in 2023, moved his award-winning distillery to Steamboat. “We decided to relocate our operation to Steamboat because we wanted to build a big campus to consolidate our customer experience,” Yeats says.

Mythology Distillery offers an extensive portfolio of award-winning whiskey, gin, vodka, and specialty spirits built on years of experience and an impressive track record of over 60 national and international awards. The formulation process is lengthy and inspired, with dozens of blends, a sensory team, and multiple tastings to get it just right. “At the end of the day, we’ve probably gone through 100 blends in order to reach that final product that highlights exactly what we’re looking for in our whiskey by blending each individual component together,” Yeats says. “The blending process allows us to create a layered product that is unique. The sum of all parts is greater than each individual whiskey.” The same process is used for the gin to create a similar, layered result. Mythology Distillery’s vodka has also won multiple national and international awards for its smooth finish and creamy texture.

Mythology Distillery has implemented its best sustainable practices including a solar array that offsets 50% of its electric demand, efficient building design to offset solar gain, reduction in building materials to construct the campus and a closed-loop steam transfer, a closed-loop chilled water transfer, significant water conservation measures and repurposing spent grain for ranch feed. It also uses recycled glass and paper products for packaging, composting, and recycling 90% of its waste.

The campus includes a cocktail bar and whiskey garden with fire pits, game area, live music, and a full Asianinspired dumpling restaurant. It’s the manifestation of a vision and a playground for adults that offers the same stoke that brought Yeats and his friends together on that trip to Alaska—just on a much larger scale. //mythologydistillery.com

INSTA HOUSE

PREFAB LUXURY HOMES THAT CHECK EVERY BOX.

Back in the day, the idea of modular construction conjured images of trailers or generic, cheap construction; that script has been flipped completely, says Darrin

Fryer, co-owner, SmartPads, a home construction company that designs and builds distinctive, luxury prefab homes built for the mountains. “It’s the exact opposite of what people used to think when they heard the term ‘modular’ or ‘prefab,’” Fryer says.

“These luxury homes will hold at least equal or higher price per square foot. People come to us and have already decided they want a modular home approach due to the quality and massive advantages offered.”

Fryer, a Broker Associate with Steamboat Sotheby’s International Realty with almost 20 years of experience building spec homes, cofounded SmartPads in 2018 with his partner, Ryan Cox. “I was doing spec homes at the time here in Steamboat and you could never get anything done on time or on budget,” he says.

“It’s not the fault of general contractors but about the whole process and all the challenges that go with building in the mountains, from labor shortages, the high cost of materials and weather challenges. We set out to do something different. A modular approach addresses all these issues and more.”

Fryer and Cox quickly discovered there are many advantages to prefabricated construction. First and foremost, a fixed budget can be offered because the variables that make on-site

construction more challenging and unpredictable are entirely eradicated when a home is built in a temperature controlled indoor facility.

The construction is higher quality because it’s engineered for transport, and it’s much faster—3 to 6 months compared to 12 to 18 months. Prefab construction is more energy efficient because it’s built with exact tolerances because they need to match the on-site foundation. The close cell foam insulation used in the walls reduces air infiltration which improves the heat and cooling efficiency. This construction method also significantly reduces waste and expensive onsite labor. Neighbors love it too, as there is so much less interruption on their street due to the short building period. It goes from foundation only one day to seeing a home the next.

That doesn’t mean there has to be limits on design. “We started humble, but over the years we’ve found our niche in the luxury market. With my background doing high-end spec homes, we set out to do something very different and had a very clear vision for our

mountain modern aesthetic.” Fryer says the design styles are characterized by lightly pitched rooflines to maximize ceiling heights, which allow for higher window placement. “With a pitched roof that is not vaulted, you waste all that airspace. This way you can fit two vertical window sets, have more volume of space, and more light. It has an airy feel to it.”

Big overhangs, clean lines, and the use of steel combined with modern rustic materials give it that luxury mountain home feel. “In essence, we came up with a design aesthetic we believed in.”

It worked. After six years, SmartPads is the number one builder of high-end modular in Colorado and has expanded to other resort towns throughout the Intermountain West, including Jackson Hole, Telluride, Winter Park, Vail Valley and Park City, and most recently, expansion into Montana. “It takes some time for the marketplace to mature and consumers have become more educated. Now they understand there are amazing advantages with modular construction.”

Fryer says consumer education has been key. “One of the misnomers is people want ‘stick built’ construction—we are 100 percent stick built, but with engineering strength and tolerances beyond the normal home.” A modular home has to be lifted by crane, transported from the SmartPads facility in Vernal, Utah, and transported across Colorado and into the mountains. Then it has to be lifted by another crane and set in place. “We rarely have a single cracked tile because everything is engineered to tolerate being moved in difficult conditions. We’ve got heavy beams and timber blocking supports in our framing that creates a structural rigidity that’s bomb-proof.”

Another misconception is prefabricated houses can’t be customized or achieve the same level of architectural design. “We can combine our modules and exterior finishes in an endless variety of configurations. It’s actually very design-centric,” Fryer says. The architectural design cost is another line item that can be taken off our clients’ budget

as we include it in our price, providing huge savings when you consider the cost of hiring an architect.

SmartPads are engineered to meet both local and state code requirements so they are built to a much higher standard. This avoids the kinds of unexpected costs down the road that cause projects to go over budget. “One of the reasons we’ve been successful is because we reverse the process. When you build on-site, you often don’t know what you’re getting into until the end,” Fryer says. “We enter into an agreement to design the home, so you have a big portion of your budget that’s secure. It makes the process easier, faster, and less stressful. People can pick all of their finishes with the support of

our in-house team within just a couple of weeks.”

The shorter build time offers a huge savings on the current excessive bank interest on construction loans that adds up with a lengthy build time and saves rent on a place to stay while a house is being built.

SmartPads have been a hot commodity in Steamboat, where the typical challenges of building in the mountains make the benefits of prefabricated construction highly desirable. “We’ve built 20+ homes throughout Routt County, and so far, these homes have proven to hold at least equal or higher price per square foot. “Now that people understand what it is, it’s got a bit of a caché,” Fryer says.

Looks like the secret is out—prefab is pretty fab.

PEAK PREMIUM

MAKING SENSE OF HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE

If there’s one thing that goes up and doesn’t come down, it’s homeowners’ insurance.

It’s not uncommon for policyholders to see their rates increase, but we are seeing premiums double or even triple with renewal notices. So, what gives?

“Basically, Colorado is now considered a high-risk state when it comes to wildfire,” says Savanah Harding, Personal Lines Lead, Mamich Insurance Agency. “The big event that triggered this was the Marshall Fire. It was the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

The wildfire started in Boulder County Colorado on December 20, 2021, and quickly spread from a grass fire to become the most destructive fire in Colorado history

in terms of the number of buildings destroyed. “The fire caused rebuild rates to double because of the increased demand,” Harding says. “The demand surge caused a shockwave through the industry.”

Harding says to understand the insurance industry, you have to look at the bigger picture, not just what’s going on in your own backyard. Insurance carriers are national corporations with policy holders across

the U.S., so a major disaster affects everyone, not just homeowners in the area where the incident occurred.

“Hurricane Ian was an eight-billion-dollar loss to the insurance industry. Each carrier is supposed to keep a percentage of premiums for its reserves, but when you have a major incident like that, it drains the company’s reserves, and that’s why they have to increase premiums, even here in Colorado.”

Harding says a common refrain regarding dramatic premium increases is “I’ve been with this company for 40 years and never filed a claim.” Unfortunately, the reality is an individual track record has little to do with premium rates.

The question is: What can a homeowner do to save money when it comes to the rising cost of homeowners insurance?

Now that Colorado is considered a high-risk state because of wildfire, that’s going to be one of the biggest variables an insurance company is going to

look at when determining the cost of protecting your home. The good news is there are things you can do. “Insurance companies want to see that you’ve created a defensible space around your home—clearing brush. Clusters of trees should be at least 75–100 feet away from any structure, and landscaping around your home should be neatly kept,” Harding says. Consider installing irrigation surrounding your home to protect it from wildfires and having a specialist come out to do an inspection or give recommendations on how to create a defensible space.

Another important thing to consider when purchasing a home is that its within five miles from a fire department. “Once you’re farther out in more rural areas coverage gets trickier,” Harding says. “Some companies simply won’t insure a property farther out, period.”

In addition to fuel sources close to your home, insurers will also look at the degree of slope your lot is on, as well as access—both characteristics that are typical for a lot of mountain homes.

With the increased risk and more complicated variables here in Colorado, Harding warns homeowners not to try to cut premium costs without consulting your agent because it may very well ending up costing you more in the long run, should something happen. “Just because you can get on app or website and buy a policy doesn’t mean you’re insured for what you think you are.”

“When the Marshall fire occurred, we heard so many stories about people who believed they were getting screwed by their insurance company, but most likely they got online, built their own policy and were just trying to make it cheap and didn’t realize that cheap coverage also meant less coverage,” Harding says. “It’s important to work with an insurance agent who can walk you through how much a policy costs and what you carry so if you do experience a loss, you have someone you trust who can walk you through it.”

An insurance agent has a program to estimate your home’s replacement cost which is especially important in a luxury resort market like Steamboat where the cost of construction is constantly going up. “With our replacement cost estimator, we can get as specific as the replacement cost of each window or types of countertops and hardwood floors.” Harding says any high value item such as jewelry or artwork should be appraised and documented. There are even specialty insurance companies that will provide coverage for jewelry specifically—again, this is something an agent can look into for you to make sure you’re adequately covered.

There are still ways to cut costs, it just has to be done strategically. “One way to save is to do a split deductible, which means you have a separate deductible for wind and hail. Those types of claims are unlikely to happen here in Steamboat, so it can be separated from what is known from an ‘all perils’ deductible you’d use in the case of theft or fire. This can help keep the overall deductible cost lower,” Harding says.

If you are a buyer, keep an eye out for items that might make a home harder to insure. If the home has a retaining wall, make sure it’s vented for water so it won’t move or shift over time. Newer roofs are important too. “Most companies will not provide replacement coverage for a roof that is more than 20 years old. A roof that is 21 years or older may only be covered for its value before it was damaged.” It’s especially important to consider this if you’re looking to purchase a condominium. “Older condominium complexes might be cheaper, but keep in mind that insuring an older property is going to be a lot more expensive to insure,” Harding says. Often the reason HOA dues rise dramatically, is because of the cost of insurance.

If your rates go up, you definitely want to shop around. Just make sure you don’t sacrifice your coverage for a lower premium. “That’s when you want to have an agent who understands the industry and can tell you ways to save,” Harding says. “It’s a tricky balance.” //mamichagency.com

OUT HERE YOGA YOGA WITH A VIEW

Out Here Yoga was a dream come true for co-founder Laura Rust—literally. “I had a dream I started a yoga studio in Steamboat,” says the 37-year-old founder who also has studios in Houston and Austin and now lives in Steamboat full time with her husband and two children. “I know it might sound trite, but I felt a very strong feeling this was something I needed to do.”

Rust, who founded OHY with partners Nancy Perry and Shannon Crow, had spent a lot of time in Steamboat growing up and knew she wanted to bring her brand of Baptiste yoga here, and to create a studio that was about more than just yoga but also a space to help people better their lives. “Our mission is to connect and elevate our community to the highest quality of life and the greatest experience of personal fulfillment,” Rust says.

That’s achieved through a lot more than a series of yoga poses, though the studio does offer a full daily schedule with a wide variety

of classes, from the more athletic heated power vinyasa flow to slower flow and recovery classes. “We get all kinds of students in our classes and all ages, from high schoolers to a super fit cadre of retirees,” Rust says. “And there are often just as many men as women.”

The studio, located above Stonewall in Wildhorse Plaza has unobstructed views of the ski area (in lieu of mirrors so you can look at the mountain instead of your own reflection), and in the summertime, there are often classes offered outside on the rooftop deck. There’s also full offering of outdoor classes, from yoga on the mountain at the top of Thunderhead gondola and on the lawn at Snow Bowl to SUP classes at Pearl Lake.

What really separates OHY from other studios is its more comprehensive offerings, like the 40 Days of Clarity program, a commitment to practice a minimum of four days a week, attend one group

meeting per week, and to meditate four times per week for 10 minutes or more. “We want to help people to live their lives with purpose, to believe in themselves and remove the barriers that get in the way of achieving their goals,” says Rust, who is also a certified Light Your Leadership coach. The studio also offers Transformational Breathwork and a Teacher Empowerment Program, a 200-hour course for students who want to become teachers or just deepen their practice.

The most exciting thing for Rust, who ditched the city for Steamboat’s small mountain town lifestyle, is its community. That’s why OHY is committed to making sure there is no barrier to entry for anyone to come and participate. The studio offers one “Yoga for All” weekly donation-based class and three classes per week with free childcare. There’s also the OHY Scholarship Fund, a community program that provides scholarships for memberships, class packs and programs. “Anyone is eligible to request assistance for any of our offerings, whether it’s a single class, teacher training, or 40 Day,” Rust says. “We want to make sure yoga is made available to anyone who wants to participate.” Om, yes please. //outhereyoga.com
