Steamboat partnered with the Colorado Tourism Office to inform visitors and locals alike on how to protect our beautiful county and preserve what makes it so special for generations to come.

Lastly, it’s important to make sure that you’re aware of trail systems and what types of activities are allowed there—some trails are biking only or foot traffic only, so you want to have a plan beforehand to know where to go. Additionally, be mindful of your surroundings and

that may be around you. And do your best to avoid damaging plant life and vegetation, following the Leave No Trace tips for maintaining the natural beauty of our trail systems.


PREVENT WILDFIRES. In the words of Smokey Bear, “only you can prevent forest fires.” As we’ve experienced some record drought summers recently and low snowpack, preventing fires has never been more important. Our dry climate and warm temperatures draw many people to the area to escape hot and humid summers in other parts of the country, but the conditions here also create an environment that’s susceptible to fire danger. Across the state, wildfire conditions and regulations may vary, so before you head out for a weekend of camping, it’s important to note what the current policies are and to know how you can safely and responsibly enjoy your campsite.

Management is a great resource for the most up-todate information in the area. Assuming there isn’t a fire ban in place and campfires are allowed, make sure your campfire is small and manageable and preferably in a designated fire ring. Never let a fire burn unattended, and make sure to fully extinguish it with water until cool to the touch before leaving your campsite or going to sleep. Avoid using fireworks or anything with an open flame. Properly dispose of trash and cigarettes, and don’t place things like cans, bottles, or plastic in the campfire. Most importantly, if you don’t feel that the conditions are safe enough to light a campfire, err on the side of caution and avoid starting one. For more information

WHAT DEFINES

STEAMBOAT STYLE? Gone are the days of traditional mountain home interiors, demarcated by iconic references like log, stone, and antlers. With the influx of home buyers from all over the country, “Steamboat style” is no longer defined by a Ralph Lauren ideal of the American West. “Our niche is change,” says Olivia Kimmeth, a Steamboatbased interior designer and owner of Olivia’s Home Furnishings. “With people who are moving here from all over the country, our definition of mountain modern has changed, and we have to change with it.” Olivia asks her clients to start the design process using Steamboat’s beautiful surroundings as inspiration. “When clients ask me where to start, I have them take a moment to look out at the mountains. That is our canvas. That’s why people move here.” If the only constant is change, there are still some things that stay the same. Olivia gives us the rundown on what the term “Steamboat Style” means today.

BREAKING DOWN THE BARRIERS. Unlike the more rustic mountain lodge-style homes of the past, today’s mountain home features open floorplans with tall ceilings, big windows, and lots of light. “The goal is to capture the views with as much glass as possible,” she says. Most remodel projects begin with tearing down walls, and architects are designing more modern homes with open spaces intended for gathering. “There are no more individual rooms where you are separated. The idea is to create a space for friends and family to come together.”

PUTTING IT IN NEUTRAL. “The majority of homes we do are a neutral palette, especially on the walls,” Olivia says. Gone are the heavy materials associated with mountain homes like log, wood, and stone. “You might have one accent wall that references those materials, like in a bedroom to make it feel cozy, but mostly we’re seeing materials like Venetian plaster with a very smooth finish. No more textured walls.” Pops of color are achieved with rugs, accessories, and furniture, but overall, it’s a more minimalist, modern vibe. “The rule is less is more,” Olivia says. “And wall paper is coming back in style, adding color and texture.”

CITY MEETS MOUNTAINS. When it comes to the definition of a “mountain-specific interior,” it’s now a matter of personal taste. “In the last year and a half, we’ve had people moving here from all over the country; California, Texas, New York, Chicago,” Olivia says. That means having to adjust to a wide variety of styles and sensibilities, but it also means urban influences are making their way into the Steamboat design landscape. Instead of wood and stone, think cable lines, steel beams, a lot of iron. “We’re seeing a lot of that industrial look that’s very modern. There’s definitely an urban influence,” Olivia says.

A NEW BREED OF MUDROOM. “In Steamboat, we are known for our mudrooms,” Olivia says. This is the space that is located between the garage and the kitchen where all of our mountain lifestyle items—from muddy boots and snow-soaked jackets to helmets and enough gear to fill a retail store—can be stored easily and efficiently for the next day’s adventure. Olivia says the traditional mudroom just got a facelift and has been replaced by an atrium, a room full of windows and glass. “The whole area is designed to let in those views, so before you walk into the home, you go through this shiny room with a lot of light and glass,” she says. ENTREPRENEURS FIND THEIR FOOTING— AND INSPIRATION— IN THE YAMPA VALLEY.

W

When it comes to businesses that began in Steamboat, people often think of Smartwool, a company that found its footing—literally—in 1994 when it began with socks made from Merino wool. The company grew exponentially over the next two decades and evolved from making socks to a full apparel line with everything from underwear and jackets to hiking skirts. It also became one of Routt County’s largest employers until it was acquired by VF Corporation, and its headquarters were moved to Denver last year. Others that come to mind might be Honey Stinger, Big Agnes, or Boa Technology, all of who have experienced great success in Steamboat, growing their brands to national recognition over the years. Steamboat’s active mountain lifestyle has inspired many young entrepreneurs, but community support is what ultimately led these young companies to success. “It’s been a wonderful place to launch a start-up,” says Andrew Beckler, who revolutionized the ski pole market with his company, Grass Sticks. He was able to launch the brand in part with a grant he won from the Yampa Valley Entrepreneurship Center (YVEC) in 2015. “It would be hard without the support of the local community,” he says. Funded by Colorado Mountain College, the City of Steamboat, and Routt County, YVEC supports local start-ups with an office-based incubator, one-on-one counseling, seminars, and other programs. Beckler is one of several successful local start-ups that made their dreams come true in Steamboat, with likely many more to follow.

HARVEST SKIS Eric Baker’s initial obsession was shaping surfboards, but he quickly realized how impractical that might be for someone who lived in Steamboat. Instead, he turned his attention to making skis. “I knew people who were building skis in their garage and was inspired,” Baker says. Baker went so far as to show up unannounced at a ski manufacturer in Denver. “I just knocked on the door and spent a couple of days there sweeping floors and just absorbed whatever I could.” What ultimately launched Baker’s career as a ski manufacturer was a ski and snowboard product design class he took at Colorado Mountain College. Not only did Baker win the branding and design competition, but he was also the first student in the program’s history to do the manufacturing himself. He made 30 pairs of skis—one for every student in the class—and his business was off and running. “That class was really what helped push me. It was really motivating,” he says. Later, Baker got an office space in the YVEC incubator and spent a year absorbing everything he could from mentors and other resources. “It was a great experience and a really cool program,” he says. After founding Harvest Skis and manufacturing out of his garage, he eventually partnered with Never Summer Industries in Denver to produce all his skis. Harvest offers four models (freestyle/park, all mountain, powder, and touring) and sold over 375 skis this season alone. He moved the company headquarters to an alpaca farm 10 minutes outside of town where customers can test out skis on a hill on the property. GRASS STICKS “When you talk to other skiers, they get so amped up about skis and boots and jackets, but no one ever talks about their ski poles,” says Andrew Beckler, founder of Grass Sticks. “I wanted to make a ski pole people were excited about and back it up with performance.” His goal was to make something light and strong but also eye-catching. In 2015, Beckler left his post as a ski instructor to focus on just that. He experimented with various pole materials, basket sizes, and grips and eventually settled on bamboo. “It’s a renewable resource that’s also light, strong, and beautiful,” he says. That year, Beckler benefitted from YVEC when he won a small business plan competition and was awarded a $10,000 grant that helped him get up and running. “It’s incredible to have that program here, and to have that support from the city meant a lot to the business.” Like other Steamboat-based entrepreneurs, Beckler was inspired by his surroundings and ultimately was able to make his vision a reality by building a product he knew would appeal to locals. “We established our roots with the local market, and it just snowballed from there,” Beckler says. “Now we’re just trying to manage our growth, which is a great problem to have.” That first winter, Beckler made ski poles out of his kitchen, and four years later, Outside magazine named Grass Sticks the Best Ski Poles of 2019. Today he has a full-fledged commercial space and managed a production run of 2,000 units this year alone, including a large order from REI. In addition to high performance, Grass Sticks are beautiful exposed bamboo and can be customized with a wide array of brightly colored grips and baskets, or can be dolled up with graphic straps (aloha flowers or tie-dye, anyone?) and engraving. HALA When it comes to finding inspiration in your surroundings, having a river run through it—literally—was a dream come true for Peter Hall, founder of Hala Gear Stand Up Paddle Boards. As a kayaker and a surfer, Hall’s desire to surf the Yampa River was pure instinct, but he had no equipment to do it. “No one was making equipment for whitewater paddle boarding, so I picked up a cheap inflatable paddle board that was basically a glorified pool toy and was taking that down the river. I started trying to design and make equipment I would want to use.” Hall started with a pen and paper, sketching his designs and figuring it out as he went. It turned out to be a very lengthy (and costly) process, but one that would yield many breakthroughs and set a standard for the burgeoning SUP industry. “Other companies often look to us as an indicator of where the technology is headed,” he says. “We’re a small company making the best product on the market in each sector.” His patented innovations include the double-bladed paddle (similar to what kayakers use), a retractable fin system called the Stomp Box, and double-stack technology that uses multiple layers to shape the edge of the board. Today, Hala Gear has a complete line of boards and paddles in every category from $899–$1,499. They have a longer wheelbase for more stability and a frame geometry that puts the rider in a more upright position for greater comfort over longer distances. At the end of the day though, it’s all about the tires. “There’s a variety of widths and treads you can use on any given day depending on the terrain and the conditions,” Charity says, admitting she indeed has a quiver of tires in her garage. A gravel bike tire is going to be around 38 mm wide, right in between a typical mountain bike tire (around 50 mm) and a road bike tire (around 25 mm). “Riders will use everything from a beefy tread to a slick tire depending on the route and desired speed.”

Believe it or not, it’s also fast. “The top riders at SBT GRVL averaged speeds of over 21 miles per hour,” Charity says. “Keep in mind that was on a course that was 144 miles.”

WHAT KIND OF BIKE YOU NEED. Let’s face it, cyclists in general are tech geeks, and gravel biking is no exception. A gravel bike is similar to a road bike but with a frame geometry that’s designed to accommodate a wider tire and also uses disc brakes, which are much safer and more responsive than traditional road bike brakes. THE MAD LADIES OF STEAMBOAT A HISTORY OF PERRY-MANSFIELD We all know Steamboat as an Olympian-producing ski

with a mission to teach “natural dance forms” and “artistic expression close to creatures and mountains and out of doors.” How progressive they must have seemed, dancing in fields of wildflowers at the PerryMansfield campus in Strawberry Park, where the non-profit organization still exists today, in long flowing skirts. They were so progressive, in fact, that the prestigious summer program is still operating under the same principles today. “It’s very interesting that they chose this location and that we’re still here,” says Executive Director Toni Quick. “What’s happened here for over 100 years makes Steamboat what it is today. It was a wild western town that has softened because of this arts camp. It exposed Steamboat to people from all over the world who came here to study dance and theatre.” “The Ladies” (as people within the organization still affectionately refer to them) tried starting their first camp in 1913 in Eldora, outside of Boulder, but the weather proved to be too cold. The Perry family was from Denver, and they were familiar with the Steamboat area because they held mining interests in the Oak Creek Mine. The women found the property in Strawberry Park and operated there from 1914 until 1965 when they transferred ownership and gifted the camp to Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. “It was a women’s college that offered dance and theatre instruction, so there had been some faculty overlap,” Quick says. “If you were a dance major, you were required to do summer study here.”

In 1990, Stephens College was going to sell the camp, and a group of local residents and alumni rallied to purchase the camp from the college. The resulting nonprofit, “Friends of Perry-Mansfield Inc.,” closed on the property in 1992. “Throughout all this time, we’ve operated in much the same vein,” Quick says, continuously offering dance and theatre as well as the equestrian program. “It goes back to The Ladies being very deliberate about where they placed the camp when they retired. That mission and that vision were so important. Everyone realized what a treasure it was, so the community stepped in to protect it from being sold for development.” That effort paid off. The summer program and its facilities still thrive today, with the same rustic vibe still intact. “We are still operating pretty much the same way they did,” Quick says. “Most of our buildings are not winterized and we get lousy cell phone reception.” Even still, participants hand in their phones and are only allowed to check them once a week to foster full immersion study. “I think it’s harder for the parents than it is for the kids,” she says. Every year, students from all over the country audition for coveted spots in the summer programs and a chance to train with some of the nation’s finest dance and theatre professionals. Even though “The Ladies” are no longer with us (Perry died in 1983 and Mansfield in 1979), their spirit is still alive and well at a small dance and performing arts camp, close to creatures, mountains, and the outdoors.
