THE VICTORIAN UNDER THE GONDOLA

an iconic steamboat landmark with a long and rich history

THE VICTORIAN UNDER THE GONDOLA

The History Behind The Victorian If you have ever ridden the gondola at Steamboat Resort, you undoubtedly have looked down on the ride up the hill to see the beautiful, classic Victorian home just below you. Situated at gondola tower 6, this breathtaking home is clearly a historical, one-of-a-kind masterpiece. An iconic Steamboat landmark since 1992, the home was born as the Brinkerhoff Mansion in 1882 in Lyons, Kansas. It was moved to its present location in six sections and pieced back together. The home has been used as a singlefamily home, boarding house, and as a bed and breakfast. Over the years, the home has been renovated, updated, and expanded without ever losing its old-world charm.

THE HISTORY

WINTER

Farmer Wendell Elbright purchases the house at the auction for $65 with plans to build a new home on the property. Larry Cole, Victorian renovation enthusiast, purchases the home from Wendell for $1,500 and is given 90 days to move it. The home is purchased by Blessing family, is split in two and each moved a short distance from each other on the same property. One is used as a rental for a while, then occupied completely by the Blessing family. LATE

1890s

Larry Cole dismantles the home with a chainsaw into five sections and puts them in storage in Hutchinson, Kansas.

A carved staircase is salvaged from a Victorian in Kansas and Larry makes a 6th trip to deliver it to Steamboat. The roof has to be opened and the staircase dropped in by crane.

Home is purchased by Dr. Jim Ecker from Edina, Minnesota. Plans are made to restore the missing portions.

Home is purchased by Timbers Resorts. Further renovations are made and home is renamed The Victorian, managed by One Steamboat Place, and rented to their prospective buyers.

Home is purchased by its current owners Jim and Kathy Manolios of Melbourne Australia and rented nightly.

SUMMER

Larry decides to move the home to Colorado and chooses Steamboat Springs. He purchases a lot next to (then) tower 7 of the gondola. FALL

In 1880, Kansas resident, Judge Brinkerhoff, built the mansion in Lyons, Kansas. More than 100 years later, in 1991, it was purchased by a nearby resident of Hutchinson, KS, Larry Cole, who was a Victorian renovation enthusiast. With the hopes of moving to Colorado, he decided to move the house there as well. In researching a number of different mountain towns including Aspen and Breckenridge, he ended up selecting Steamboat Springs, purchasing a lot on the slopes of Mount Werner. Despite experts believing it wasn’t possible, he moved the house to its present location in Steamboat in 6 sections and named the house Colebrook Manor.

Over the next few years, the owners spent time searching for antique, Victorian-style pieces to adorn the home, including a vintage 1871 Steinway Piano and a Tiffany & Co. mantel used in the front parlor, dating back to the late 19th century. A few of the statement pieces of the home include the beautifully carved wooden staircase, salvaged from a Victorian house in Kansas that was about to be demolished, and the original stained-glass windows.

THE COMPLETION

In 2000, the home was purchased by a private owner from Minnesota and further renovated and updated while his family resided in the house. In 2003, it was opened as a bed and breakfast and operated as such until 2007 when Timbers Resorts, the operating company of One Steamboat Place, purchased it as a showcase for guests of One Steamboat Place. Updates, including a game room and a new kitchen, were completed and it was once again opened up to guests under the name of The Victorian. The current owners purchased The Victorian in 2012 as their Colorado home. Over the last 8 years, events such as weddings and family reunions have been held here.
