OLYMPIC ROOTS RUN DEEP IN STEAMBOAT SPRINGS
Steamboat has produced more Winter Olympians than any town in North America. That might be why so many of them stayed or returned here, to make a life and raise a family of their own.
The only thing that’s as impressive (and exciting) as the legacy of the former Winter Olympians who live in Steamboat is the fact that many of them have worked or are currently working as coaches at the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, helping to mentor and inspire the next generation of Steamboat Olympians. If they weren’t born in Steamboat, they were promising young athletes who came here for the sole purpose of training with SSWSC, many of whom have stayed here to help carry on the tradition. We caught up with four of Steamboat’s esteemed Winter Olympians to talk about life as world-class athletes, and what happens when—and if—they hang up their skis. After competing all over the world, these athletes all returned to Steamboat at the end of their skiing careers. They settled down and started their own families here, passing onto their children the very same influences and values that shaped their own lives. In so many ways, this is what Steamboat is all about - a life shaped by the surrounding mountains, a love for skiing, family, community, and perhaps even creating the next generation of Olympians.

C AROLINE LALIVE
When it comes to taking care of a two-year-old, writing a blog for Steamboat.com, and running her own business, Caroline Lalive has had some serious training for taking on whatever challenges come her way. “Blood, sweat, and tears” doesn’t even come close to describing the sacrifices Lalive made for her alpine skiing career. We’re talking about blown out knees, torn ligaments, a punctured lung, and a shattered femur and kneecap for a total of 19 injuries, including 13 that required multiple surgeries (30 total surgeries).
“I was so young and had no expectations. I just went and lived in the moment, and I did really well.” She was at the dawn of her career and showing a lot of potential in her debut on the world stage. “I remember thinking, ‘the sky is the limit.’ It was such a cool time in my career,” she says. Despite a successful run on the World Cup with a total of 15 top-10 World Cup finishes over the course of her career, the Olympics would prove to be her biggest challenge. As a top ranked skier who garnered a lot of attention from the media going into the Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City in 2002, the pressure to medal proved to be too much and she disqualified. She worked on her mental game after that, going into the 2006 Olympics feeling strong physically and mentally, when a freak crash during a warmup run resulted in a shattered femur and kneecap that ultimately ended her career. (She did try to come back again, but blew out her other knee the following season and officially announced her retirement in 2009).

JOHNNY When Johnny Spillane purchased Steamboat Flyfisher in 2014, he cemented his future in Steamboat as a local business owner and inched his name a few notches over from “local Olympian” and more into the fly fishing realm. Fly fishing is, after all, Spillane’s passion. But for the father of three, his legacy is and forever will be in Nordic Combined skiing.
SPILLANE
The four-time Olympian sealed his fate— and the fate of the US Nordic Team—by becoming the first American to win gold in a Nordic Combined in a World Championship, and then becoming the first American to medal in the Olympics, winning a silver in Nordic Combined (a combination of cross country skiing and ski jumping) at the Vancouver Games in 2010. He went on to win two more Olympic medals in Vancouver, returning home to Steamboat with 3 silver medals. “Our team had never had any real success on the international level,” Spillane says. “My silver medal win helped everyone’s confidence going forward, knowing that we could be successful on the big stage. We were able to break through and start winning Olympic medals.” That’s not to say it didn’t take a lot of grit and hard work. Spillane always knew he was a good cross-country skier. Born and raised in Steamboat, he’d started cross country skiing when he was eight years old. “I was always a hard worker, and cross country skiing seemed easy because there is a direct correlation between how hard you work and your results. But ski jumping was so random.” He made the development team when he was only 15 and went on to compete in four Olympics Games before winning the silver medals in his final Olympics in Vancouver. “My goal was always to win an Olympic medal,” he says of his career stamina. “The Olympics are only every four years so you have limited opportunity. That was my motivation.” His passion, however, has always been fly fishing, a sport he’s enjoyed since he was a kid. “It was something I could do in my spare time that was an escape from
training,” he says. He became a guide and when the opportunity to buy Steamboat Flyfisher came up, he jumped. “I was looking to retire from competitive skiing, and the opportunity to buy the store came up so I decided to go for it.” Spillane is also going to start coaching with SSWSC this winter and is looking forward to passing on his knowledge to future generations. Along with wife Hilary, the father of three (Hadley, 7, Genevieve, 5, and Waylon, 9 months) is grateful to be raising his kids in the same town that has afforded him so many amazing opportunities. “It’s such a great community for kids, there’s always so much to do,” he says. Does that mean they’ll follow in their father’s footsteps and launch off the big ski jump in cross-country skis? “They like alpine skiing,” he says. “We go every weekend. They’re good skiers. I’m going to let them do whatever they want to do.”

I
It takes a little while to get Chris Puckett to talk about himself. He’d rather tell you about his wife’s Pilates business or how his oldest son, Cole, 17, is now four inches taller than him. A financial advisor for Edward Jones, he almost seems like your average Steamboat family man—but most people already know that this former Olympian is far from average. Puckett comes from a big skiing family. His younger brother Casey is a five time Olympian and X Games Skiercross Gold Medalist. His mother, Peggy, was a diehard skier who raised the kids in Crested Butte and helped start the Crested Butte Ski Club. “Crested Butte in the seventies was not a bastion of activity,” Puckett says. “You either go skiing or you stay inside.” He got serious enough about ski racing to attend Burke Mountain Academy in Vermont and made the US Ski Team when he was only 17. He went on to race on the World Cup and somehow managed to earn a degree from Dartmouth even when he was competing full time. He was a member of the US team from 1987-2001 and competed in the Olympics in Albertville, France in 1992 when he was 21. “I used a brand-new pair of boots and the course was super steep,” he says of that first Olympic run. “I didn’t feel comfortable. The boots had more leverage than I was used to; I was chattering all the way down and I disqualified. It was a really tough day for me.” Still, Puckett went on to rack up an impressive record and was known for being a well-rounded overall technical skier who was strong in all four alpine skiing events. He competed at the World Cup level for a decade and retired shortly after his first son was born, in 2001. He and his wife Wendy were living in Boulder

and decided if they were going to raise a ski family, they would do it in Steamboat. Coaching for SSWSC was a natural fit for Puckett, who was eager to give back everything he’d learned during his storied career to future generations of ski racers, including his two sons, Cole and Cooper. Wendy opened her own business, Steamboat Pilates and Fitness, and Puckett knew he wanted a more secure financial future for his family. It turned out the Edward Jones recruiter for the western slope was an old racing buddy of Puckett’s who hired him on the spot. “We hadn’t seen each other in 20 years and it was like we hadn’t skipped a day. Within one hour of starting our meeting, I was on board with joining Edward Jones. The hiring process took a little longer than that, but the decision came easily and quickly.” That was ten years ago. Puckett still coaches on the weekends and during winter, he doesn’t have a day off for six months. “Sometimes I’m more exhausted on Monday than I am at the end of the work week,” he says. “I’ve got so much knowledge and experience, it’s important to me to be able to share that with the local kids.” Both his sons train as ski racers with SSWSC, and both Cole and Cooper aspire to race on the World Cup, just like their Dad. According to Puckett, “They are both extremely motivated, and I am extremely proud.” Their futures already look promising. In 2016, Cole was presented with the Spencer Nelson All-Star Athlete of the Year by Colorado Ski Country USA. As an Olympian, the real lessons Puckett has to pass on to his sons are about so much more than skiing. “I see people who didn’t get what they wanted at the Olympics but then took those lessons from skiing and applied them to life, and they’ve all been really successful. You learn to keep going, to keep trying, to find a way to better yourself. You learn to push through uncomfortable situations, because really that’s what ski racing is, learning to be uncomfortable.” That, and never trying out a new pair of boots on race day.

For Bobby Aldighieri, being at the Olympics as a coach meant as much to him as it did as an athlete. After all, it was during his five-year tenure as a coach for the Canadian National Freestyle Team at the 2002 and 2006 Olympics that he tasted real victory. He’d taken a team from mediocrity all the way to the top, and to becoming the successful overall program that it is today.

“Coaching has always been a natural fit for me,” he says. “It’s something I’ve always been really passionate about. Over time, I feel more inspired to pass it on.” Originally from New Jersey, Aldighieri attended Killington Mountain School with the dream of one day competing in the Olympics. “From the time I was young, it was something I really wanted to do. I persisted and sacrificed a tremendous amount to get there, so when I found out I made the US Team, it was a pretty emotional moment for me.” Aldighieri spent 7 years on the US Ski Team. He won a World Cup gold medal in 1988 and went to the 1992 Winter Olympic Games in Albertville, France. He competed on the Professional Ski Tour for three years before he retired from the U.S. Ski Team and moved to Steamboat to become the head moguls coach for the SSWSC. “For as much as I enjoyed skiing, I wanted to give that to these kids—the joy of the process, of training, of sharing my knowledge on the technical side of things,” he says. TAKING FLIGHT
TAKING FLIGHT FOR THE FLETCHER BROTHERS, THE ROAD TO THE 2018 WINTER OLYMPICS IS ALL ABOUT FLYING
Bryan and Taylor Fletcher had just arrived in Norway from Finland, where their season on the World Cup Nordic Combined tour had only just begun. Even though the Olympics is just a few short months away, it’s been a lifelong journey for the Steamboat-born brothers, who fell in love with ski jumping when they were four years old. The brothers sit side by side for our interview via Skype, the image on the computer screen slightly blurred by a slow internet connection, looking more like twins than brothers who are four years apart. In Steamboat, where the 90-meter ski jump dominates the landscape, not only in downtown but in the minds of little boys with dreams of competing in the Olympics, the Fletcher brothers’ fate was sealed before they were old enough to enter grade school. Ultimately it would be Nordic Combined, a sport that involves ski jumping and cross country skiing,

The more you try, the more likely you are to mess it up,” he says, “People compare it to swinging a golf club. It’s a very simple sport, but it can also be the most frustrating thing in the world. “

We’re also good training partners, always pushing each other to the edge. It’s not always pretty, but we help make each other better,” Bryan says. They both have their sights set on an Olympic medal, and would love nothing more than to stand on that podium together. “The experience of the Olympics is always incredible, and you can’t beat walking into the opening ceremonies with your brother. But our bigger goal is to

Instead of focusing on the top athletes, we created a development pipeline to foster those smaller clubs,” Bryan says, “What we learned is our sport is growing rapidly throughout the United States, especially compared to other sports, and now we’re able to provide support from the bottom up instead of the other way around.” Speaking of surviving and thriving, Bryan also founded CCThrive, a non-profiit organization dedicated to inspiring kids with cancer to “turn surviving into thriving” through stories about other survivors who went on to make their dreams come true. “When I went through chemo there weren’t a whole lot of people to look up to who had been through what I was going through,” Bryan says. While

THE LAYERS Michelle Ideus, the local Steamboat artist who has been selected to create the original art for the 2018 Winter Carnival commemorative poster, punctuates most of what she says with an infectious laugh. That light-heartedness and refusal to take herself too seriously also comes through in her whimsical, colorful work. Tell us about your background in art. You work in so many different mediums. Has that always been the case or has it evolved over time? After completing my Bachelor of Fine Arts from CSU, my art has evolved over time. I’ve always been into water colors, print making, drawing, and oil painting. When I moved to Steamboat, I decided to start working with acrylics because I wanted to be able to work anywhere in my house and not have the smell and cleanup required with oil paint. That’s when I started mixing.

“I never know where the collage is going bring me and that’s always the fun part.”
What is your process? Where do you find your inspiration? I started taking pictures of horses, which is something I hadn’t done before. I did mini collages of horses on Masonite and people loved them, so that shot me off into a new direction, painting with acrylics and doing collages on canvas and Masonite. Steamboat has this whole western feel, and I knew I wasn’t a realist or a western painter, but I wanted to build off learning from other people’s stories. What are some of your collaging techniques? I start with a photograph and then do a sketch on canvas or Masonite. Then I create a painting with acrylic and build a collage over that using all kinds of scraps from magazines, newspaper, homemade paper, or whatever I might find. I use a special kind of varnish that’s not only a finish, but also an adhesive. I can paint and then I can flip-flop around with gluing pieces of paper and then painting over it again. I like to integrate the varnish a bunch, which dries clear and slightly glossy. I never know where the collage is going bring me and that’s always the fun part. What is your plan for the Winter Carnival poster? What does it mean to you become part of Steamboat iconography? I have done a few posters in the past but this one is such a big deal! My 10-year-old son is in Winter
Sports Club and I’ve been able to experience Winter Carnival as a participant’s mom so I really know what this is all about. I have a very good friend, George Fargo, who is a local professional photographer and artist. It was important to me to begin with a strong image, so he and I collaborated on a photo for the painting. We kind of merged two different photos that I loved. I knew I wanted a certain feel, to be able to combine those more traditional images with something new. We then worked closely with Mindy Williams at Steamboat Frame Works, and came up with custom frames for the original and the limited edition giclée prints that showcase the art work perfectly. I am really proud of how it turned out, and am so excited to share it with Steamboat. It’s a huge honor and I hope people love it.
The commemorative poster program, initiated and organized by Steamboat Sotheby’s International Realty, has raised over $15,000 for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club in each of its first two years, 2016 and 2017. The program was started in an effort to create a connection between SSIR’s ties to the art world, its local advocacy program, and athletics in Steamboat—all three of which are vital to the fabric of our community. For the more adventurous, The Hudson ( 2 ) features duck fat washed with bourbon. “We soak the bourbon with duck fat and it sits for three days,” Ayres says. “Then we freeze it and strain off the bourbon. Finally, it’s combined with Maraschino liquor, which is a classic cherry liquor, dry vermouth and a bitter orange liquor called Amerpicon that comes from a boutique distillery in Golden, CO called Golden Moon. They don’t even have distribution so we have to drive down there and pick up the bottles ourselves.” Ayres says. The finished product “does have duck flavor which is strange, but cool, and a little thickness that gives it more of a mouth feel.”
