and clear just how important it was to remain right where we are - right in the heart of our beautiful downtown,” said Marita Hattem-Schiffman, president of MyMichigan Medical Centers in Clare, Alma and Mt. Pleasant. “What’s more, there are just so many benefits being positioned here near outstanding businesses and established traffic corridors that serve surrounding communities. This allows us to continue to serve not just those here in Clare, but all those beyond our great county with ease of access to our Medical Center and our services.”

Phase one of the project includes construction of a new two-story section that will house a new Emergency Department, new Inpatient Unit with all private rooms, and an expanded Imaging Department, including a fixed MRI Unit. Access to the medical center for 24/7 outpatient services including lab, Xray and CT imaging will also be improved. The North parking lot will also be expanded for improved employee parking. Construction for phase one is expected to begin by 2025, and last 14 months.

Phase two of the project will include construction of a new main entrance and canopy, as well as a plaza connecting the campus to the downtown area. Improvements include better patient entry and wayfinding, and complete renovation of first floor public spaces to include Patient Registration, dining, the Shamrock Patch Gift Shop and access to lab and imaging services. Phase two will immediately follow phase one and is anticipated to take eight months.

Hattem-Schiffman continued, “Access to health care is getting harder to find in rural areas. MyMichigan Health is committed to providing as much high-quality health care as close to home as possible for our communities.”

History

History of Clare

In 1864, Bay City lumberman William McEwan purchased the acreage around the area that is now downtown Clare. In 1868, he established a logging camp just south of what is now the city and began clearing timber. In 1870, the Flint and Pere Marquette Railroad extended their tracks through the area, crossing what was then known as the Isabella-Tobacco River State Road near McEwan’s lumber camp. McEwan took this opportunity to plat out a city near the crossing, and by the end of 1870, a small collection of buildings had been erected in Clare, including boarding houses, a store, and a few private houses. From south to north, it numbered seven streets. The main street named McEwan was impassable because of huge pine stumps, separated by Pine and Hemlock Streets on the east and Beech and Maple Streets on the west.

The commercial district grew rapidly in the 1870s. In 1878, Clare had 700 residents, over 30 commercial establishments, two churches, and more industrial employers. In 1881, an opera house opened, and in 1885 the first brick building in the city was constructed. Public water mains and telephone lines were soon installed, and by 1891 there were nearly 1200 residents in Clare, and it was incorporated as a city. Electrical service was introduced in 1894, and a number of important commercial brick structures were built in the downtown in the 1890s, on McEwan.

In the early 1900s, two significant fires in 1904 and 1907 destroyed several buildings in the downtown area, most constructed of wood. However, the buildings were quickly replaced, and from that point on, all further construction was of brick. Additional smaller fires occurred throughout the rest of the 20th century, resulting in a steady trickle of new construction of individual buildings from the 1920s through until the 1990s. Further construction occurred in the 1930s along West Fifth Street, following the construction of the Clare City Hall Building.

Education

Clare Public Schools - It’s Always Easy Being Green!

Another stellar year to be a Pioneer is officially in the books, with our best years ahead. In the classroom, achievement continues to improve, noted in an exceptional graduating class of seniors well above the state average in SAT scores. Our schools are full of exceptional young people, and Clare is the place to be to chase your dreams.

Students excel in the industrial arts, business programs, fine arts, athletics, and service to the community. The 2023-2024 school year saw our band programs achieve Division “I” ratings throughout the year, and culminated in an award-winning Jazz Band performance at Zal Gaz Grotto in Ann Arbor. The theater department put on several successful plays. The BPA (Business Professionals of America) program is the strongest in the region, highlighted this year by many great performances including the Broadcast Media Team with a 2nd place national finish! Student advisory groups performed community service across the area, learning to contribute to our community early in their lives. Our Robotics program continues to grow at all levels. Athletic teams simply steamrolled the competition with conference, district, and/or regional championships in boys’ and girls’ basketball, wrestling, cross country, boys and girls track, softball, baseball, and clay target shooting.

This coming year, we will implement new curriculum resources in English Language Arts and Mathematics at most levels, adopted after thorough review by teachers and leaders. Summer School programming has focused on reading, writing, and mathematics skills, while also striving for engaging summer activities and field trips that show a little of the world outside our great community. Whether it is visiting Mackinac Island, the Alpena Shipwreck Tour, children’s museums, the Holocaust Museum, or any of our state’s exceptional zoos – we seek to help young people know a little more first hand about the world beyond.

To be a Pioneer is to know that there is always work ahead, but we are determined to keep our focus on making Clare a great place to live and learn!

The Board of Education has prioritized appropriately small class size, while managing the community’s resources effectively. This approach has led to a robust staff, a healthy general fund balance, a dedicated capital projects fund for future needs & space to grow, and the region’s best employee contracts. It’s our people that create the “magic” with students and our community, and our Board of Education has been diligent about seeing “around the curve.”

In recent years, we have opened preschool classrooms, added mental health professionals, supported the expansion of CTE programming through our RESD, added American Sign Language, drone flight, and a second industrial arts teacher to engage and meet the needs of all our students. Our collective efforts are making a difference. If you want to achieve in the classroom and chase a dream beyond it, Clare is the place to be. To be a Pioneer is to know that there is always work ahead, but we are determined to keep our focus on making Clare a great place to live and learn!

Arts & Culture

Destination Clare

Destination Clare: A beautiful display of Art Sculpture Walk was established in 2022. The Art Sculpture Walk features outdoor sculpture exhibits that are displayed year-round. This exhibit features art sculptures from across the United States. Some of the artwork is constructed of metal or recycled materials, but all are uniquely crafted and truly works of art and chosen by a committee for display. Most of the art is located on McEwan Street in downtown Clare.

Visit Art Alley

Let us invite you to visit Art Alley, an ongoing project that is tucked in behind downtown businesses between 4th and 5th street. This exquisite alley will mesmerize all ages as you stroll along the beautiful artwork. One exhibit showcases members of the community who took selfies to make up a ceramic mosaic designed by

Self-Guided Historic Art Tour

Take a self-guided tour of historic art found throughout the city. Clare is proud to own several art pieces created during the Works Progress Administration era (WPA) of the 1930’s and 1940’s. This project paid the artist to create art for public facilities. The Clare Middle School houses four huge murals painted by Gerald Mast and dedicated to the school in 1938. The Clare Post Office has a mural titled, “Mail Arrives in Clare” by Allan Thomas was installed in 1937 and was funded through the Treasury Department Section of Painting and Sculpture. A magnificent 10 foot high statue, The Pioneer Mother was done by sculpture Samuel Cashwan stands at the entrance to the school. The high school students of 1936-1937 were involved in choosing the subject matter for the statue and helped pay for the stone. Clare County Arts Council took the task of raising funds to restore the statue.

Clare County Quilt Trail

Clare County Quilt Trail is home to 68 quilt blocks scattered across the county. A committee established the Quilt Block trail in 2013. Quilt blocks can be giant eight foot by eight-foot, 4 x 4 or 2 x 2. They are located on barns, buildings and houses. 15 of the 16 townships have quilt blocks on their township halls. A self-guided brochure is available at the Clare Union Railroad Depot or on their website at www.clarecountyartscouncil.info

leisure a drive through Clare County’s Amish areas, visit featured businesses listed on our map, and spend a day browsing Amish wares, furniture, quilts, and more!

Clare County is home to a large community of Amish, with roots going back to the original founders from Germany and Switzerland.

The Amish way of life is one of simple enjoyment of the land and community. Skills are passed down through the generations and the Amish craftsmen are renowned for their finely crafted products including furniture, quilts, and baskets. Baked goods and produce from their farms are offered for purchase along the roadside when weather permits.

The Yoder’s and their friends hold a large quilt auction, craft show, and flea market each spring (third Friday and Saturday of May) and late summer (Friday and Saturday of Labor Day weekend). Imagine fields transformed with rows of crafters, antiques, and flea marketers – hundreds of vendors in all! This event is one of the largest, well attended, craft shows, flea markets and quilt auctions in Michigan. No machine stitched quilts are sold at the auction. In addition to the Amish crafted furniture, quilts and goods, one may purchase an array of arts and craft items, discounted tools, jewelry, cutlery, jams, and plants – to name a few. A number of concession stands and several food specialty tents, featuring baked goods and cheese, are hosted by the Amish women. Parking is best in downtown Clare with shuttle services running to and from the auction site on a regular basis. The Yoder Brother’s Auction host a consignment horse and tack auction and a separate auction for equipment every spring and fall.

Here to Stay, Medical Center To Expand and Remain Downtown

Having served the community for more than 70 years, the Medical Center announced in July 2023 plans to remain in its existing downtown location and will proceed with an expansion and revitalization of its current facility. Construction is expected to begin in 2025.

Project Highlights

• Adequate property and available space in current location allowing for build out of new areas, revitalization of what remains*

• Estimated phases 1 & 2 project cost approximately $40 million

• Detailed design work now underway through summer 2024

• Construction slated to begin by 2025

• Project to occur in multiple phases, includes:

 construction of a new addition, including the Emergency Department, inpatient unit and Imaging Department

 new Main Entrance and canopy, and revitalization of the first floor

We are here to stay! The trust we have built with the Clare community is nothing short of amazing. Through our review of project options, feedback from neighbors and data gathered with our recent economic impact study, we heard loud and clear just how important it was to remain right where we are - right in the heart of our beautiful downtown. What’s more, there are just so many benefits being positioned here near outstanding businesses and established traffic corridors that serve surrounding communities. This allows us to continue to serve not just those here in Clare, but all those beyond our great county with ease of access to our Medical Center and our services.
