PARKS & SPORTS

Explore the Beauty

of Gladwin County through the Trail of Two Cities

A pathway that will not only unite Beaverton and Gladwin but also provide trail users with a gateway to the great outdoors. Gladwin County is rich in its abundance of natural resources. Rivers, lakes, forests, and wildlife are all an important part of what makes Gladwin County Michigan’s Backyard. The Trail of Two Cities makes all of this accessible for anyone who wishes to walk, run, bike, snowshoe, or crosscountry ski the Trail.

Running parallel to the Cedar River, the Trail is ADA-compliant and offers several recreational activities. The most recent addition includes a new kayak launch at the River Road Trailhead completed last summer by the Gladwin Conservation District with benches donated by the District and the Gladwin County Kiwanis Club.

Our natural resources in Gladwin County are something to protect and preserve. They have supported our community for generations and have allowed Gladwin County to grow into what it is today. The Trail of Two Cities has become a window into this natural world. It invites everyone to be a part of the outdoors in their own way and enjoy everything it has to offer.

Sometimes these resources need some assistance though. Along the Trail, Gladwin City Park provides an opportunity to see the impacts of invasive species and the harm they can do to the native ecosystem. Non-native oriental bittersweet vines can be observed wrapping around and strangling trees, and beneath the overtaken trees you will notice a dense layer of non-native woody shrubs. The

Campgrounds are a plenty in Gladwin County. Many offer fishing, canoeing, boating, water-skiing, swimming, playground facilities and bike rentals for the recreational trails.

The activities will delight your senses, body and soul. Events take place throughout the summer months at many of the campgrounds from fireworks, theatre and outdoor movies to youth programs, sporting events, social events, ice hockey and fitness activities. Come enjoy the great outdoors of Gladwin County!

Trail of Two Cities has allowed us to recognize these impacts and work to reverse them.

This year, significant investments are going back into the land. Gladwin Conservation District and Central Michigan Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area are collaborating with local government and community members to help reduce the invasive plant population and establish native species to create a beautiful and functional ecosystem along the Trail.

This important work will help restore the Cedar River watershed ecosystem and provide a Michigan-native environment along the Trail of Two Cities. Users can look forward to a one-acre pollinator habitat, rustic trails with educational signage, a new pavilion with seating, and the regrowth of native Michigan woods and wildflowers to highlight the beauty that Gladwin County has to offer.

An Update from... Trail of Two Cities

Disc Golf

Throw long and prosper.

Exciting news!! Our Trail of Two Cities has been paved down both River and Croll Roads and is ready for use! Many thanks to the Gladwin County Road Commission for doing the pavement work, the Herbert and Grace Dow Foundation for partially funding the project and Gladwin County for appropriating ARPA funds to make it happen. Thanks to the efforts of these organizations and countless other groups/individuals through the years, our trail is nearly complete!

Next up on our agendaconstructing a small section near the Gladwin County Animal Shelter (located in the wooded area near the river) and bringing the trail safely into Beaverton City. Stay tuned for those project updates, but, in the meantime, feel free to use and enjoy the nearly completed trail.

Please use caution when using the trail and surrounding roads, especially while the Task Force and municipalities work to get proper signs and crosswalks posted.

Gladwin County Airports

Gladwin Zettel Memorial Airport in Gladwin County is both a jewel for travelers and county citizens. The airport is the gateway airport to Northern Michigan recreation. Gladwin County has state and national forest land, lakes and rivers, ORV and snowmobile trails, and superb hunting and fishing spots. Your choice of new and recently remodeled motels, hotel and spa, antique shops and numerous restaurants are only one to two miles from the airport. Three courtesy cars are available 24/7 and you are welcome to keep them for overnight use. Gladwin Zettel Memorial Airport is a major contributor to Gladwin County businesses and directly impacts a large percentage of the jobs in this county of 25,500 year-round residents. Companies often use GDW as a base to visit their locations throughout a six-county area. There are also a few ultralight aircrafts based at GDW. For those who like turf, GDW has 15/33, a 2,580’ x 150’ runway. GDW has self-serve 100LL and Jet A fuel available 24/7, and assisted/full service during regular business hours seven days per week. GDW holds several popular fly-in breakfasts each year – in the airport pavilion – some feature WWII war birds, and rides are often available. Breakfasts often coincide with events at the Gladwin County Fairgrounds, which are located adjacent to the airport and are used throughout the year for festivities such as the antiques snowmobile races, and of course the county fair.

EDUCATION

STUFF Beaverton Schools

Gladwin Schools

IT’S ABOUT MORE THAN THE

Everybody thinks their school is special. In Beaverton, we know it. As hard as we try - and make no mistake, we try really, really hard - there are some unavoidable realities in public education in a rural setting. Other school districts will outspend us and out-recruit us. They might have the luxury to offer varsity water polo, or astronaut camp in actual outer space. That’s not us. That can’t be us.

Now it’s true that - boosted by a generous bond approved by our community in 2021 - we can claim:

• One-to-one technology for each and every student

• Classrooms equipped with new furniture and supercool learning devices

• A beautifully-revamped athletics complex

• Heightened safety and security of our buildings

• A new on-campus preschool program

• Early college opportunities for students who want to get the jump

• Robust skilled trades offerings

• Our brand-new girls’ soccer program

• And on, and on, and on That’s all good stuff. Important stuff. But we don’t stand out because of our stuff; we stand out because of our people. Our teachers, our staff and most importantly, our students. Our people embody the unstoppable community spirit that makes Beaverton Schools the unquestioned hub of an entire community that cares. It spills into our halls and flows through our classrooms with joyful, relentless abandon. There’s a hope-infused work ethic in our people - a grittiness and an eagerness to achieve that mixes high expectations with a proven road map to get students where they need to go.

The stuff is great. The stuff is cool. But without excellent people traveling on a true collaborative journey to succeed, it’s just stuff.

Our school rests in a small town with a huge heart and our best pitch to parents is this: If your kids show up ready to learn, ready to engage, ready to care, they’ll leave here ready for college, or a career, or both. If they show up knowing what they want out of life after high school, great. If not, that’s fine as well; like everything else we do around here, we’ll figure it out together.

In 2024-2025, the Gladwin Schools will offer Jr. High Football and Cheerleading as MHSAA sports. All games and events at Gladwin Schools are live streamed to the community by our AudioVisual students and staff from the High School. The streaming may be accessed for free.

Facility Upgrades this year from our general fund include; new digital art studio @ High School, new high school

parking lot lighting, funding for band instruments, expansion/ renovation of high school weight room, security camera’s installed at each building, bus lift, new visitor bleachers at the football field.

Future ideas being explored using General Fund monies include; moving the alternative education site near the main campus and the creation of a site for 4-year-old students near our main campus area.

To fund the move of alternative education the District would sell

the current building and 12-acre site. Four-year-old students are now funded at the same rate as K-12 students. Currently, due to our high school of choice numbers, we can only house 4 of 6 sections at our elementary school – the other two sections are housed at the old State Police Post. Gladwin Schools is considering options to create space for these students, from the General Fund, for the 202526 school year.

Gladwin Schools has the lowest area school bond tax rate, 1.45%, when compared

to other neighboring districts; Beaverton (2.75), Clare (2.80), Farwell (3.00), Harrison (4.00) and Sanford-Meridian (7.00). Gladwin Schools has a bond proposal, in February, asking voters to approve a 0% increase, which would allow for current bonds to be refinanced and use 16,200,000 to renovate the current Jr. High School facilities with upgrades to include; heat, water and waste systems, a new roof, a secure entryway, STEM/ Robotics lab, art and music rooms, media center, kitchen & cafeteria, flooring, door security and parking.

MYMICHIGAN MEDICAL CENTER GLADWIN

MyMichigan Medical Center Gladwin, located at 515 Quarter Street, is a 25 licensed-bed critical access hospital that has been serving the health care needs of residents throughout Gladwin County since 1937. Led by Ray Stover, president of MyMichigan Medical Centers in Gladwin and West Branch, the Medical Center is part of MyMichigan Health, a non-profit health system headquartered in Midland, Michigan, that is affiliated with Michigan Medicine, the health care division of the University of Michigan.

With more than 280 employees, volunteers, physicians and other personnel, the Medical Center in Gladwin provides patients with access to a full continuum of health care services normally only found in much larger communities. With 24-hour emergency care, the Medical Center’s specialized inpatient units support medical and surgical care, with support by the Medical Center’s hospitalist program. Outpatient services include mammography, bone density, X-ray services, diagnostic imaging, infusion services, nuclear medicine, laboratory services, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) scanning and MRI, a sleep disorders lab and Senior Life Solutions, an intensive outpatient group therapy program. Gladwin’s specialty clinics include sleep, general surgery, cardiology/heart failure, orthopedics, ophthalmology and neurosurgery. In 2023, the Medical Center also added wound care and swing bed programs.

In addition, the cardiovascular team at MyMichigan Medical Center Gladwin is well equipped and trained to diagnose and treat heart disease, offering a wide variety of diagnostic cardiac studies, including Holter monitoring, stress tests, electrocardiograms (EKGs) and echocardiograms. A wellqualified and caring staff also delivers a wide range of rehabilitation services that include physical therapy, aquatic therapy offered in a heated pool, as well as speech therapy and occupational therapy.

The Medical Center campus features a waterfall in a garden-like setting reflective of MyMichigan’s emphasis on humanistic care. The waterfall, courtyard and walking trails that connect to the Gladwin City Park Riverwalk trails are enjoyed by Medical Center employees, patients and visitors.

The quality of care at MyMichigan Medical Center Gladwin is independently verified through accreditation from The Joint Commission. In 2023 the Emergency Department, as well as inpatient care at MyMichigan Medical Center in

Gladwin was recognized as a 5-Star Performer by national health care research leader Professional Research Consultants, Inc. (PRC). In addition, Medical Center in Gladwin received an Award of Distinction for Excellent Performance by PRC. In 2019, Chartis Center for Rural Health named the Medical Center one of the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals in the United States. Also in 2019, the Medical Center received the Michigan’s Quality Improvement Organization (MPRO) Governor’s Award of Excellence for outstanding achievement in Effective Reporting and Measurement in Critical Access Hospitals in 2019.

Gladwin is also home to MyMichigan Health Park Gladwin, located at 1105 East Cedar Avenue. The facility provides a full range of outpatient services, including primary care providers, urgent care, a lab drawing station, diagnostic X-ray services, occupational health and a primary access care clinic. Providers who specialize in family medicine care for patients of all ages, from newborns to seniors, while urgent care is conveniently open 7 days a week for walk-in care, with no appointment necessary.

Above all, in addition to caring for patients, the employees, providers, staff and volunteers in Gladwin care for their community. They give back with time, talent and treasure through local support of a variety of charitable, community and development organizations, including 211 of Northeast Michigan – Gladwin County, Beaverton Activity Center, Beaverton and Gladwin Schools, Central Michigan Health Department, Gladwin Business and Professional Organization, Gladwin County Community Foundation, Mid Michigan Community Action Agency and United Way of Clare and Gladwin Counties, just to name a few.

MyMichigan Health continues to grow and transform to fulfill its Purpose Statement of Creating Healthy Communities – Together in the communities it serves. Stover assumed additional responsibility in 2020 when he was named president of MyMichigan Medical Center West Branch. This realignment supports MyMichigan Health moving from a location-specific mindset to a regional and system focus. This structure helps MyMichigan leverage resources, while keeping care close to home and continuing to create better access to care for patients.

“We are committed to continually working to strengthen a better version of ourselves,” said Stover. “We remain dedicated to improving the health of those in the communities that we serve, leaving a positive impact on our patients, communities and employees.”

ARTS & CULTURE

An Abundance of Art

Here in the greater Gladwin County area and throughout the middle of the mitten, the love of the arts runs deep. One of the benefits of living and visiting here is the overwhelming arts and entertainment opportunities within close distance.

Why was Gladwin, named Gladwin?

Let’s start from the beginning. In the spring of 1932, there were “spear points of the “Clovis” people that were found in Sage Township. In association with the remains of long extinct Mammoth, indicates that a branch of this elephant hunting culture was indeed located in Gladwin County, Michigan at one time.” (The First Years, 1991, pg.6). Which brings us to a few decades later to the first people of Gladwin County, “were Native Americans of the Ojibway, Sauk, and Menominee tribes, these people lived by hunting, fishing, and collecting wild rice.” (MME). The lumbering era began thereafter with an abundance of pine and oak trees throughout the “1870’s and into the 1890’s with heights often exceeding 100 feet tall.” (MME)

The “first American settler was Marvel Secord, who settled on the Tittabawasee River in 1861, he packed up his family and moved to what is now known as Secord area of Gladwin County.” (MME). Gladwin was originally named

Cedar, in the year of “1883 the post office department changed the name of Cedar to Gladwin as there was another Cedar in Michigan” (History of Gladwin, Michigan. Pg.3). This is where Major Henry Gladwin comes in, “Gladwin was named after Major Henry Gladwin who was in command of the fort of Detroit during the memorable siege of Chief Pontiac” (History of Gladwin, Michigan, pg.1).

According to Rick Sigsby, author of Images of America, Gladwin County, he tells us that “Gladwin County is the Thermoforming capital of the world. One of the largest developers and manufacturers of plastic is the Dow Chemical Company. The basic principle of thermoforming is heating a plastic sheet, forming the plastic mold under pressure. Gaylord Brown took this simple concept and Gladwin County, specifically Beaverton was taken into the thermoforming capital of the world.” (Images of America Gladwin County, 2008).

Saint Anne Roman Catholic Church in Gladwin County had its beginning in 1961 when an 11-acre parcel of land at the corner of Dundas and M-30 was donated to the Saginaw Diocese. By April 21, 1963, the cornerstone for the church was laid. On June 16, 1963, the first mass was celebrated in St. Anne Church. In 1973 a social hall, classrooms, and office were added to the church. St. Anne, at the time, was a mission church connected to St. Philip Neri Parish in Coleman. In July 2013, both St. Anne and St. Philip Neri merged with St. Agnes Church in Sanford at a time when several Saginaw diocese parishes also merged. Our Lady of Grace Parish was formed to unite the three churches under the direction of Fr Daniel Fox, OFM, Cap as pastor.

St. Anne church has a strong history in supporting the local community. The church continues to make available the large parking lot for fire truck training by three area fire departments namely Billings, Beaverton, and Edenville townships and as a heliport for emergency medical helicopter evacuations and staging for Southern Gladwin, Northern Midland Counties. The hall and classrooms serve local groups as a place for monthly blood drives, AA meetings, as well as for the church commissions and committees. In addition, the parking lot was extensively used by FEMA following the historical 2020 flood that wreaked havoc on both Midland and Gladwin counties.

Weekly services are held at St. Anne on Wednesday mornings and Saturday evenings, and all are welcome.

See Our Lady of Grace website for weekly Mass schedules and much more at ourladyofgracemi.org. Also find us on Facebook.
