The Chamber of Commerce is a partnership of businesses and professional people coming together to make Gladwin County a better place for everyone to live and work. We are Gladwin County’s Information Center.

Volunteering at the Chamber! Our volunteers serve our chamber by sharing their knowledge of the area with visitors. Welcome to Michigan’s Backyard, Gladwin County. Jenna here, your new Gladwin County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director! If you are new & visiting our area, WELCOME to Michigan’s Backyard! The nickname, Michigan’s Backyard, was coined for Gladwin County as this area seems to be the gateway to Northern Michigan. Whether it is enjoying a tasty dining experience, listening to city summer sounds of live music, or taking in a breath of fresh air while embarking on outdoor adventure, there is no lack of things to do here. Recently, I have received the question; what does the Chamber of Commerce actually do and why should I support it? Well, friends, let me tell you that my experience so far has been quite the journey! My previous perception about a Chamber pales in comparison to my current view. This experience has expanded my knowledge that Chambers are a vital part of any local community! Some folks think that the Chamber is a government entity. We do work with local government agencies to provide benefits to our businesses and communities. We are actually a nonprofit organization that is supported by membership dues and events that we host. Others might think we are a marketing agency. While we do offer some marketing support, it is not the full-time focus. A few may think we are primarily event planners. We are in a constant state of event planning in the office, because it is our belief that our lives are enriched with regular activities to attend, however, that isn’t the primary goal. The purpose of our Chamber of Commerce is to help promote growth and prosperity in the hometowns of Gladwin County. We provide word of mouth referrals on a regular basis to our locals and visitors. We manage a social media presence with a large audience. Through our different events, networking opportunities become available for our attendees. When a new business wants to open, we equip that entrepreneur to find the necessary resources on how to get started. Marketing materials are mailed or given to new residents that want to relocate here with suggestions of places to visit, where to eat, and what is fun to do around town. We answer the call from your elderly family member that is having trouble looking up a service or business. We bring government leaders closer to you so you can ask the important questions. We provide outdoor excursions that are family friendly and bring outsiders to the community to shop at our local stores. We work with the local education systems to encourage skills needed for today’s job market and help to pair employers with potential new team members. Nationally, chamber of commerce organizations are evolving rapidly, like everything else these days! It is vital that we continue to provide value to our members while promoting a great place to work, play and vacation! The Chamber will continue to host our annual events to contribute to exhilarating experiences, networking opportunities and education for our residents and our guests. The Chamber is supported by the Board of Directors on the next page. If you see them around town, be sure to come alongside me in thanking them for volunteering their time to our communities. Chambers provide tangible and intangible benefits on a daily basis. Hopefully, if you are still reading this, you’ll now feel more confident in what your Chamber does and how it serves your local communities. Board of Directors ANGELA BIGHAM, President City of Gladwin

Angela is a lifelong resident of Gladwin. She graduated from Gladwin High School and earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Alma College. Angela is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Gladwin, Gateway Community Band and is the Treasurer for the City of Gladwin. In her spare time, Angela loves to garden and travel.

JESSICA GROVE, Vice President Merrily Ever After Bridal Shop

Jessica is a Gladwin High School graduate and earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Central Michigan University. She is the owner of Merrily Ever After Bridal Shop located on Main Street in Gladwin. Jessica also serves on the local Junior Achievement board and volunteers in the classroom with her young son, Philip.

MICHAEL MURRAY, Treasurer Burkhart-Presidio Insurance

Michael was born and raised in Gladwin County. He graduated from Beaverton High School and earned his Bachelor Degree from Alma College. Michael is a producer at Burkhart-Presidio Insurance, is involved in the GBPA, and spends his free time playing golf.

DAWN MORRIS, Secretary 989 Real Estate LLC / First Chance Second Glance

Dawn is the Broker/Owner of 989 Real Estate LLC and has been serving Gladwin County with their real estate needs for over 12 years. She is the Co-Owner of First Chance Second Glance Retail store; a thrift shop in Gladwin. She is a lifelong resident of Gladwin County and is proud to make Gladwin her home with her husband and son.

BOB BALZER, Director Consumers Energy

Bob is a graduate of Gladwin High School and received his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Central Michigan University. Bob spent 9 years serving Gladwin County as the Director of Business and Economic Development with Michigan Works! Region 7B and the Gladwin County EDC before joining Consumers Energy in November of 2021. His role of Community Affairs Manager for Arenac, Clare, Gladwin, Isabella, and Midland counties will allow Bob to build partnerships in those communities. Bob enjoys camping with his family, hunting, fishing and the outdoors, and positively impacting the lives of youth.

CORY BARZ, Director Clare County Transit

Cory was born and raised in Gladwin, graduated from Mid Michigan College and later CMU, and taught in the Lansing area for six years before an opportunity arose to return to Gladwin. He is currently serving as Operations Manager at the Clare County Transit. Cory and his wife April are looking forward to becoming more invested and involved in the business community of Gladwin.

Chamber Events 30th Annual Golf Outing | May 20 Come join us at the Sugar Springs Golf Course on May 20, 2022! The day will begin with an 8:00 am shotgun start. There will be prizes, challenges, a delicious steak dinner and surprises for all of the participants. This is a great way to network with businesses and individuals, while enjoying a beautiful day on the expertly groomed Sugar Springs Golf Course.

Gladwin County ORV Fun Fest | Aug 20 Gladwin County EDC and the Gladwin County Chamber of Commerce are teaming up again for the 9th Annual ORV Fun Fest, August 20, 2022. There is a 70+ mile ride full of trails throughout Gladwin County with planned “Stops” for games prepared by local businesses. Visit orvfunfest.net for info.

Legislative Breakfast Series | Jan - May 2022 Come have breakfast with local and state leaders in government to ask questions, hear how they are supporting economic development for our area and get to know them better. Join us for all five breakfasts or any combination of breakfasts throughout the series. They occur the second Friday of every month beginning in January and concluding in May.

Lamplighter Holiday Candle Lighting To bring the Holiday Spirit to the area leading up to Christmas, local leaders in the community dress in a top hat and trench coat each evening to light Cedar Avenue with candles in old-fashioned lanterns. Caroling takes place while the lamplighter lights each lantern. This is a free, family-friendly event to celebrate the holiday season!

Huntington

Sean was raised in Gladwin and graduated from Gladwin High School before attending Alma College where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree. Sean is the Financial Relationship Banker at Huntington in Gladwin and volunteers his time as a coach for the high school football program. In his free time Sean enjoys being out on the water, traveling and watching sports.

BECOME A CHAMBER AMBASSADOR Program Outline The Gladwin County Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Program is structured to help you meet new people, discover the many businesses in the area, build deeper connections through networking opportunities, and enhance your communication skills as you serve as a liaison between the Chamber and the community.

Mission Statement Chamber Ambassadors serve to welcome new businesses and individuals to the community, act as official Chamber representatives, and promote and enhance the reputation of the Chamber to the communities it serves.

Chamber Ambassador PROGRAM STRUCTURE The Chamber Ambassador Program is governed by a Chair and ViceChair who are elected annually.

Becoming a Chamber Ambassador Individuals interested in becoming a Chamber Ambassador must be a current Chamber member or a representative of a current Chamber member business. Acceptance into the Chamber Ambassador Program is contingent upon an in-person casual interview with the Chamber’s Executive Director.

Expectations Serving as a Chamber Ambassador includes attending events that occur at various times. It is important that prior to making the commitment to serve as a Chamber Ambassador, you discuss the following expectations with your employer to ensure that you will be able to attend events and assist the Chamber with a reasonable schedule.

Enrollment If you are interested in serving as an Ambassador for the Gladwin County Chamber of Commerce, please contact the office to request an application form. Once your application has been reviewed, you will complete an Ambassador Commitment form to be recognized as an official member of the Chamber’s Ambassador Committee. High School Seniors and College Students: Junior Ambassador Program available.

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| MyMichigan Medical Center Gladwin MyMichigan Medical Center Gladwin, located at 515 Quarter Street, is a 25 licensed-bed critical access hospital that has been serving the health care needs of residents throughout Gladwin County since 1937. Led by Ray Stover, president of MyMichigan Medical Centers in Gladwin and West Branch, the Medical Center is part of MyMichigan Health, a non-profit health system headquartered in Midland, Michigan, affiliated with Michigan Medicine, the health care division of the University of Michigan. With more than 300 employees, volunteers, physicians and other personnel, the Medical Center in Gladwin provides patients with access to a full continuum of health care services normally only found in much larger communities. With 24-hour emergency care, the Medical Center’s specialized inpatient units support medical and surgical care, with support by the Medical Center’s hospitalist program. Outpatient services include mammography, bone density, X-ray services, diagnostic imaging, infusion services, nuclear medicine, laboratory services, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) scanning and MRI, a sleep disorders lab and Senior Life Solutions, an intensive outpatient group therapy program. In addition, the cardiovascular team at MyMichigan Medical Center Gladwin is well equipped and trained to diagnose and treat heart disease, offering a wide variety of diagnostic cardiac studies, including Holter monitoring, stress tests, electrocardiograms (EKGs) and echocardiograms. A well-qualified and caring staff also delivers a wide range of rehabilitation services that include physical therapy, aquatic therapy offered in a heated pool, as well as speech therapy and occupational therapy.

The Medical Center campus features a waterfall in a garden-like setting reflective of MyMichigan’s emphasis on humanistic care. The waterfall, courtyard and walking trails that connect to the Gladwin City Park Riverwalk trails are enjoyed by Medical Center employees, patients and visitors. The quality of care at MyMichigan Medical Center Gladwin is independently verified through accreditation from The Joint Commission and was named one of the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals in the United States by The Chartis Center for Rural Health in 2019. Also in 2019, the Medical Center received the Michigan’s Quality Improvement Organization (MPRO) Governor’s Award of Excellence for outstanding achievement in Effective Reporting and Measurement in Critical Access Hospitals in 2019. In 2020, the Medical Center was named a Top Rural Hospital for patient safety and quality. In addition, MyMichigan Medical Center Gladwin received a 5-Star Award for patient experience in the Emergency Department and was recognized as a 4-Star Performer for inpatient patient experience by Professional Research Consultants, Inc. (PRC). Gladwin is also home to MyMichigan Health Park Gladwin, located at 1105 E. Cedar Avenue. The facility provides a full range of outpatient services, including primary care, urgent care, a lab drawing station, diagnostic X-ray services and occupational health. Providers who specialize in family medicine care for patients of all ages, from newborns to seniors, while urgent care is conveniently open 7 days a week for walk-in care, with no appointment necessary.

Above all, in addition to caring for patients, the employees, providers, staff and volunteers in Gladwin care for their community. Few people know it, but the Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics plant in Beaverton started with a dream and fishing trip to Canada. Ken Miner was an engineer working on research and development projects, when he set out on that fateful fishing trip to Canada’s Patter Lake in 1977. While on the trip, Ken, who knew there was a niche market for small orders of silicone in the medical and pharmaceutical markets, decided to go into business for himself. In honor of the inspirational fishing trip, Ken chose the business name “Patter Products.” Ken was a true entrepreneur, and enjoyed working on R&D projects with his customers. He purchased used equipment to extrude, mold and assemble silicone products, and manufactured many of them himself until he could afford to hire employees. In 1993, Patter Products and Norton Performance Plastics (owned by Saint-Gobain Corporation) formed a joint venture to develop Tygon silicone tubing. In 1994, Ken, who was 73 years old at the time, decided it was time to retire. Norton purchased Patter

Products in January of 1995, and the name was changed to SaintGobain Performance Plastics in 2000. In 2002, a sister location in Sparta, N.J. closed and some of the production from that site was transferred to the Beaverton location, adding 18 jobs. Today the site strives to maintain its entrepreneurial heritage and spirit while leveraging the global resources available within the Saint-Gobain family. The skill and ability of the people, their commitment, and the drive to work as a team have been critical in the growth of the site. The business serves the life science, medical and consumer products markets with a wide array of industrial applications. Saint-Gobain has approximately 150 locations in North America, employing more than 15,000 people. The corporation employs about 180,000 people worldwide across 72 countries. They makes specialty plastics products for a range of markets, including medical, pharmaceutical, and industrial. In early 2022, Saint-Gobain earned Top Employer Global recognition for the seventh consecutive year.

Sometimes you’re lucky, and sometimes you’re good. One morning last fall, Emily was both. A 13-year-old first-timer in the woods, Emily and her mom watched from their blind as a six-point patiently pecked away at their food plot for what felt like forever. This buck was nice. But the one that entered the frame next – the one that had become Emily’s trail camera all-star – was amazing. Emily breathed deep, took aim and fired; her shot ran high, but she hit him in the lungs and he didn’t get far. When they caught up to him, two notable features stood out. One was the buck’s massive overbite, which provided days of laughterfilled storytelling. The other was his incredible 14-point rack. Dirt Nap Taxidermy took it from there, providing an unforgettable shouldermounted memento, complete with the buck’s original jawline.

When her grandpa acquired 85 acres on Knox Road last year, Molly – 15 years old and a first-time hunter – knew she’d finally get a chance to hunt a big buck with her mom. The property was rich with stags, but Molly was thinking long-term; she was determined not to settle for anything small, allowing today’s young bucks to mature into tomorrow’s mount-worthy trophies. Waiting and watching is part of the hunter’s discipline, and on a mild morning in October, Molly and her mom had done plenty of both. But it ultimately paid off big; a doe entered Molly’s field of vision, and a massive buck followed. One perfect heart shot from Molly’s crossbow and a brief pursuit later, she had her buck – an eight-point beauty that now adorns her wall after shoulder mounting by Beaverton, Michigan’s own Dirt Nap Taxidermy.

Gladwin County Airports GLADWIN ZETTEL MEMORIAL AIRPORT (GDW) Gladwin Zettel Memorial Airport in Gladwin County is both a jewel for travelers and county citizens. The airport is the gateway airport to Northern Michigan recreation. Gladwin County has state and national forest land, lakes and rivers, ORV and snowmobile trails, and superb hunting and fishing spots. Your choice of new and recently remodeled motels, hotel and spa, antique shops and numerous restaurants are only one to two miles from the airport. Three courtesy cars are available 24/7 and you are welcome to keep them for overnight use. Gladwin Zettel Memorial Airport is a major contributor to Gladwin County businesses and directly impacts a large percentage of the jobs in this county of 25,500 year-round residents. Companies often use GDW as a base to visit their locations throughout a six-county area. There are also a few ultralight aircrafts based at GDW. For those who like turf, GDW has 15/33, a 2,580’ x 150’ runway. GDW has self-serve 100LL and Jet A fuel available 24/7, and assisted/full service during regular business hours seven days per week. GDW holds several popular fly-in breakfasts each year – in the airport pavilion – some feature WWII war birds, and rides are often available. Breakfasts often coincide with events at the Gladwin County Fairgrounds, which are located adjacent to the airport and are used throughout the year for festivities such as the antiques snowmobile races, and of course the county fair.

4th of July Celebration

Beaverton Area Holiday Hunt

Christmas Tree Lighting

The celebration starts days before the 4th of July in Beaverton. The crowning of Miss Beaverton Pageant kicks it off. The Firecracker 5K Race and Cornhole tournament are also two big events during the week long celebration. The 4th of July themed parade is one of the largest parades in Central Michigan. Live DJ music leading up to the finale of the celebration is the ever-exciting, booming and flaring fireworks display that residents and visitors come from miles around to ooh and aah in delight.

When the hunters in your family take to the woods during the opening weekend of rifle season, you take to the streets of Beaverton to hunt down your own bargains in November, getting a jump start on your holiday shopping. The Beaverton Area Holiday Hunt is a community-wide event in Beaverton that offers raffles, discounts at local businesses, lunch specials and local craft shows. The fun continues with door prizes for visiting the businesses. The event is sponsored by the Beaverton Area Business Association to promote local businesses, shop local and save local.

The holidays are ushered in with a Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration on the first Friday in December each year, located at Ross Lake Park. This is a tradition for our community, as kids line up to see Santa after the Christmas lights are lit for the evening. The band will play carols, the towns people will sing and the Christmas display will be lit for the season. This is a community tradition that has been presented by the Beaverton Area Business Association for many years.

Thursdays in the City Summer Sounds

Festival of Lights Parade

Thunder on the Strip is one of Gladwin’s premiere events, pitting some amazing cars against one another to see who owns the strip. This family fun event is held at the Gladwin Zettel Memorial Airport each year. Friday Test & Tune and Saturday Drag Racing! You have an opportunity to bring your car out on the strip and show off what it can do in an 1/8 of a mile!

Thursdays in the City - Summer Sounds the Gladwin Business and Professional Association is sponsoring five FREE Concerts during the Summer of 2022 on Thursday evenings, 7 pm - 9 pm, in various locations in the City of Gladwin. Please follow gladwinonline.com to see when dates are posted and to learn more about this event! The event is rain or shine and remember bring your own chair!

The Festival of Lights Christmas Parade, and the Tree Lighting, takes place the first Saturday in December in Gladwin. The community comes together to fund this magnificent event that brings an estimated 5,000 people to the area. With large helium and cold air balloons, stretching over 50-feet tall, it’s a wonderful site to see. Visitors have come from as far as Canada and Puerto Rico to see this spectacular event! Come join us and see what all the excitement is about!
