On behalf of the Gladwin County Chamber of Commerce, I would like to welcome you to Michigan’s Backyard, the Hometowns of Gladwin County. Gladwin County is a unique place to live, work, and grow a business. Whether you’re visiting for the day, looking for a new place to call home, or you’re already a resident of our thriving communities, Gladwin County consists of quaint little towns with big hearts and plenty of opportunities. Our rich history contributes to the nuances which creates the “Norman Rockwell” environment that is loved by so many.

The Chamber was established in 1936 to advocate and support the prosperity of Gladwin County and area businesses. This is an exciting time to be a member of the Gladwin County Chamber of Commerce as we create innovative networking opportunities and technologic advances to connect our businesses with each other We are always creating new networking and promotional opportunities to help our member businesses succeed and grow, including space to advertise on the Chamber website, business referrals, networking opportunities, legislative breakfast series and virtual networking.

Angela is a lifelong resident of Gladwin. She graduated from Gladwin High School and earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Alma College. Angela is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Gladwin, Gateway Community Band and is the Treasurer for the City of Gladwin. In her spare time, Angela loves to garden and travel.

Jessica is a Gladwin High School graduate and earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Central Michigan University. She is the owner of Merrily Ever After Bridal Shop located on Main Street in Gladwin. Jessica also serves on the local Junior Achievement board and volunteers in the classroom with her young son, Philip.

Michael was born and raised in Gladwin County. He graduated from Beaverton High School and earned his Bachelor Degree from Alma College. Michael is a producer at Burkhart-Presidio Insurance, is involved in the GBPA, and spends his free time playing golf.

Bob is a graduate of Gladwin High School and received his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Central Michigan University. Bob spent 9 years serving Gladwin County as the Director of Business and Economic Development with Michigan Works! Region 7B and the Gladwin County EDC before joining Consumers Energy in November of 2021. His role of Community Affairs Manager for Arenac, Clare, Gladwin, Isabella, and Midland counties will allow Bob to build partnerships in those communities. Bob enjoys camping with his family, hunting, fishing and the outdoors, and positively impacting the lives of youth.

CORY BARZ, Director Clare County Transit

Cory was born and raised in Gladwin, graduated from Mid Michigan College and later CMU, and taught in the Lansing area for six years before an opportunity arose to return to Gladwin. He is currently serving as Operations Manager at the Clare County Transit. Cory and his wife April are looking forward to becoming more invested and involved in the business community of Gladwin.

MMDC to provide EDC services to Gladwin County

“This is a great opportunity to provide economic development services to Gladwin County in coordination with our other activities acress Middle Michigan,” stated Jim McBryde, President and CEO of Middle Michigan Development Corporation. “We look foward to serving another rural county and connecting with valuable resources to create a more resilient environment for the communities and the residents located across our growing service area.”

MMDC has worked closely with Glawin County’s team of economic leaders for many years. After Bob Balzer left the role as EDC Director for Gladwin County in 2021, the county began contemplating a different structure. Matt Lang, the current Director of Gladwin County Economic Development Corporation, will spread his time between supporting Michigan Works! Region 7B and being the boots on the ground for Gladwin County economic development efforts.

“This feels like a natural evolution for our county,” notes Scott Govitz, Chairman of the Gladwin County EDC. “Not only does this maintain a clear point of contact for economic development work, someone who lives and works in Gladwin County, but it expands services through the added support of the entire MMDC team and puts us on the map with regional partners.”

TheMiddle Michigan Development Corporation (MMDC) has formally entered into a contractual agreement with Gladwin County. This contract will allow MMDC to provide economic development services on behalf of the county and will expand its coverage area beyond its current oversight for Clare, Isabella, and Osceola counties.

Gladwin County, population just over 25,000, features over 20 major manufacturers, including Saint-Gobain, Brown Machine, Roll-Rite, and Loose Plastics, all of which will be important conntection points for MMDC as it extends its services into the county.

Gladwin County Airports

Gladwin Zettel Memorial Airport in Gladwin County is both a jewel for travelers and county citizens. The airport is the gateway airport to Northern and national forest land, lakes and rivers, ORV and snowmobile trails, and superb hunting and fishing spots. Your choice of new and recently remodeled motels, hotel and spa, antique shops and numerous restaurants are only one to two miles from the airport.

Three courtesy cars are available 24/7 and you are welcome to keep them for overnight use. Gladwin Zettel Memorial Airport is a major contributor to Gladwin County businesses and directly impacts a large percentage of the jobs in this county of 25,500 year-round residents. Companies often use GDW as a base to visit their locations throughout a six-county area. There are also a few ultralight aircrafts based at GDW. For those who like turf, GDW has 15/33, a 2,580’ x 150’ runway. GDW has self-serve 100LL and Jet A fuel available 24/7, and assisted/full service during regular business hours seven days per week.

GDW holds several popular fly-in breakfasts each year – in the airport pavilion – some feature WWII war birds, and rides are often available. Breakfasts often coincide with events at the Gladwin County Fairgrounds, which are located adjacent to the airport and are used throughout the year for festivities such as the antiques

Saint-Gobain Life Sciences in Beaverton is Gladwin County’s largest employer with nearly 400 employees at the site in 2022. However, the location is just one of 30 manufacturing sites in 13 countries for the Life Sciences division of Saint-Gobain. A global company based in France, Saint-Gobain employs 180,000 people around the globe. That being said, the Beaverton location plays a major role in the global market for pharmaceutical and medical grade silicone tubing and assemblies. Products manufactured at the site for various customers have global reaches that includes making drug therapies for vaccines and cancer treatments. An innovative company where 1 in 4 products made today did not exist five years ago, Saint-Gobain products made in Beaverton impact many sectors of the economy, but focus primarily on Life Sciences, Food & Beverage, Automotive, and Aerospace markets.

In 2022, Saint-Gobain was awarded Global Top Employer certification by the Top Employers Institute for the seventh consecutive year. Only 11 companies in the world have received this label in 2022. MyMichigan Medical Center Gladwin

MyMichigan Medical Center Gladwin, located at 515 Quarter Street, is a 25 licensed-bed critical access hospital that has been serving the health care needs of residents throughout Gladwin County since 1937. Led by Ray Stover, president of MyMichigan Medical Centers in Gladwin and West Branch, the Medical Center is part of MyMichigan Health, a non-profit health system headquartered in Midland, Michigan, affiliated with Michigan Medicine, the health care division of the University of Michigan.

With more than 280 employees, volunteers, physicians and other personnel, the Medical Center in Gladwin provides patients with access to a full continuum of health care services normally only found in much larger communities. With 24-hour emergency care, the Medical Center’s specialized inpatient units support medical and surgical care, with support by the Medical Center’s hospitalist program. Outpatient services include mammography, bone density, X-ray services, diagnostic imaging, infusion services, nuclear medicine, laboratory services, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) scanning and MRI, a sleep disorders lab and Senior Life Solutions, an intensive outpatient group therapy program.

In addition, the cardiovascular team at MyMichigan Medical Center Gladwin is well equipped and trained to diagnose and treat heart disease, offering a wide variety of diagnostic cardiac studies, including Holter monitoring, stress tests, electrocardiograms (EKGs) and echocardiograms. A wellqualified and caring staff also delivers a wide range of rehabilitation services that include physical therapy, aquatic therapy offered in a heated pool, as well as speech therapy and occupational therapy.

The Medical Center campus features a waterfall in a garden-like setting reflective of MyMichigan’s emphasis on humanistic care. The waterfall, courtyard and walking trails that connect to the Gladwin City Park Riverwalk trails are enjoyed by Medical Center employees, patients and visitors.

The quality of care at MyMichigan Medical Center Gladwin is independently verified through accreditation from The Joint Commission and was named one of the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals in the United States by The Chartis Center for Rural Health in 2019. Also in 2019, the Medical Center received the Michigan’s Quality Improvement Organization (MPRO) Governor’s Award of Excellence for

outstanding achievement in Effective Reporting and Measurement in Critical Access Hospitals in 2019.

In 2020, the Medical Center was named a Top Rural Hospital for patient safety and quality. In addition, MyMichigan Medical Center Gladwin received a 5-Star Award for patient experience in the Emergency Department and was recognized as a 4-Star Performer for inpatient patient experience by Professional Research Consultants, Inc. (PRC).

Gladwin is also home to MyMichigan Health Park Gladwin, located at 1105 E. Cedar Avenue. The facility provides a full range of outpatient services, including primary care providers, urgent care, a lab drawing station, diagnostic X-ray services, occupational health and a primary access care clinic. Providers who specialize in family medicine care for patients of all ages, from newborns to seniors, while urgent care is conveniently open 7 days a week for walk-in care, with no appointment necessary.

Above all, in addition to caring for patients, the employees, providers, staff and volunteers in Gladwin care for their community. They give back with time, talent and treasure through local support of a variety of charitable, community and development organizations, including 211 of Northeast Michigan – Gladwin County, Beaverton Activity Center, Beaverton and Gladwin Schools, Central Michigan Health Department, Gladwin Business and Professional Organization, Gladwin County Community Foundation, Mid Michigan Community Action Agency and United Way of Clare and Gladwin Counties, just to name a few.

MyMichigan Health continues to grow and transform to fulfill its Purpose Statement of Creating Healthy Communities – Together in the communities it serves. Stover assumed additional responsibility in 2020 when he was named president of MyMichigan Medical Center West Branch. This realignment supports MyMichigan Health moving from a location-specific mindset to a regional and system focus. This structure helps MyMichigan leverage resources, while keeping care close to home and continuing to create better access to care for patients.

Campgrounds are a plenty in Gladwin County. Many offer fishing, canoeing, boating, water-skiing, swimming, playground facilities and bike rentals for the recreational trails.

The activities will delight your senses, body and soul. Events take place throughout the summer months at many of the campgrounds from fireworks, theatre and outdoor movies to youth programs, sporting events, social events, ice hockey and fitness activities. Come enjoy the great outdoors of Gladwin County!

The Trail of Two Cities

The Trail of Two Cities, so named as it will eventually connect Gladwin and Beaverton, is a paved all seasons Trail that can be used for walking, running, biking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. The Trail is ADA accessible and designed to promote healthy living in Gladwin County.

Currently there are 2.5 miles of Trail on Gladwin City property beginning at North Park, continuing through the Gladwin City Park & Campground and ending at the River Road Trailhead. Parking is available at the Trailhead providing for a 5 mile round trip along the Cedar River. Those using the North Park entrance will find a 9-hole disc golf course, skate park and kayak launch.

Located halfway through the southern section, between the campground and River Road Trailhead, are several benches perched on a high bank at a horseshoe turn in the Cedar River. These benches where generously donated by the Gladwin Kiwanis Club and the Strong family and provide a peaceful stop along the way for individuals to stop and observe their surroundings.

New to the Trail this year was the completion of the Buckeye Trailhead located south of the River Road Trailhead on River Road. Funded by grants and donations this Trailhead features a 0.5 mile of paved trail, a pavilion constructed by the Beaverton Lions Club, picnic tables, kayak launch and privy. A kiosk with trail information and donors is available and will be updated annually. Sponsorships are currently available for picnic tables in the pavilion.

The nest phase of the Trail scheduled for fall of 2023 will include connecting the River Road and Buckeye Trailhead.

The Trail is administered by the Gladwin County Trails Recreation Authority (GCTRA). The board consists of members from each city and township whose property the Trail is on. The GCTRA meets the second Thursday of each month at Gladwin City Hall at 4:00 pm. Meetings are open to the public and all are welcome to attend.

A Year in Review

From Gladwin County Board of Commissioners

2022 was a very busy and productive year for Gladwin County and the Board of Commissioners. As the county emerged from the COVID restricted times of 2020 and 2021, the genesis of many impactful things took root in 2022.

Gladwin County received an appropriation from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of $4.9MM to be used on post-COVID rebuilding projects such as public health, negative economic impacts due to the public health emergency, replacing lost public sector revenue, providing premium pay for essential workers, or infrastructure investments. To this end, the county put out a call for projects to the entire community in order to find out what needs we had due to the pandemic. A steering committee that represented a cross-section of local business leaders, educators, and government officials was assembled to go through each project to evaluate them for qualifications to the criteria of the Treasury Department’s regulations, and then pass them on to the County Board of Commissioners for further review/consideration. Of the 35 projects that were submitted for consideration, 24 of them were selected for funding at some level. Once it was determined that a project fit the Treasury’s criteria and was thus eligible to be funded, the Board of Commissioners evaluated the project for maximum impact to the entire county as well as economic development potential. Some of the projects that were approved for funding and that will be taking root in the county in the coming years were:

- Construction of an athletic park in the city of Beaverton

- Expansion of the “Trail of Two Cities” between the cities of Gladwin and Beaverton

- Broadband mapping for Gladwin County

- Equipment investment for Gladwin County Recreation Area

- Water Well for Gladwin County Sports Complex

- Emergency vehicle housing for Billings/Bentley townships

- New roof for Gladwin County Historical Society building

- Improvements to the Beaverton hydro dam and spillway

It was also a very active year in moving to get our lakes restored after the catastrophic events of May, 2020. The delegated authority for both Gladwin and Midland counties, Four Lakes Task Force, led the county through many complex engineering and funding activities to ultimately secure the funding needed to rebuild our broken dams and ultimately restore our lakes. Work has already begun on the Secord and Smallwood dams, with lake restoration anticipate in the spring of 2024. The dams and spillways in Edenville and Sanford have already undergone much stabilization work, and actual construction will begin in 2023, with Sanford Lake returning in 2025 and Wixom Lake restoration anticipated in 2026.

In addition to these two major projects, the Gladwin County Drain Commissioner was able to work through all of the proper state channels to secure a one-time appropriation from the state of Michigan of $2MM in order to manifest some long-needed repairs to county drains without putting an undue tax burden on the county residents. The county was also awarded a total sum from a nationwide settlement in excess of $600M to combat the opioid crisis that surrounds us.

Beyond influxes of funding coming into the county, there were several other things of interest to the citizens of our community. We lost one of our long-term Circuit Court Judges, the Honorable Thomas R. Evans due to illness. After a long hiatus where visiting judges aided the Honorable Roy Mienk in presiding over our Circuit courtrooms, Governor Whitmer appointed local attorney Tara S. Hovey to fill the vacancy. The county also experienced a change in the Prosecutor’s office as Norman Gage became the county’s new Prosecutor, moving up from the Assistant Prosecutor position and was backfilled by Mark Toaz as the county’s new Assistant Prosecutor.

The aging infrastructure of the Gladwin County jail reared its head in 2022, forcing closure of the jail due to collapsed underground plumbing and necessitated the outsourcing of county inmates to neighboring jails for 2 months. The plumbing was repaired back to a serviceable level and the jail is now once again functioning.

The county is being proactive in the recruiting and hiring of new law enforcement officers due to the national shortage. The county Board of Commissioners approved a resolution to the state to request more funding for law enforcement be funneled to county and local departments, and also approved an unprecedented plan to give Gladwin County a leg up on neighboring departments to help pave the way for new recruits to enter the profession.

Gladwin County’s Emergency Management department significantly upgraded their communication capabilities to use in case of county emergencies with the state-funded purchase of hi-tech radios and ham equipment. The County Clerk, Register of Deeds, and County Treasurer all made significant advancements in automating all public-facing systems for easier use. The county leadership development program continued to churn out new graduates from both the student and adult programs in 2022, investing in the future leadership of the county and its businesses.

All in all, it was a very busy and productive year for the County of Gladwin!

Beaverton Area Holiday Hunt

When the hunters in your family take to the woods during the opening weekend of rifle season, you take to the streets of Beaverton to hunt down your own bargains in November, getting a jump start on your holiday shopping. The Beaverton Area Holiday Hunt is a communitywide event in Beaverton that offers raffles, discounts at local businesses, lunch specials and local craft shows. The fun continues with door prizes for visiting the businesses. The event is sponsored by the Beaverton Area Business Association to promote local businesses, shop local and save local.

Christmas Tree Lighting

The holidays are ushered in with a Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration on the first Friday in December each year, located at Ross Lake Park. This is a tradition for our community, as kids line up to see Santa after the Christmas lights are lit for the evening. The band will play carols, the towns people will sing and the Christmas display will be lit for the season. This is a community tradition that has been presented by the Beaverton Area Business Association for many years.

FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS PARADE

The Festival of Lights Christmas Parade, and the Tree Lighting, takes place the first Saturday in December in Gladwin. The community comes together to fund this magnificent event that brings an estimated 5,000 people to the area. With large helium and cold air balloons, stretching over 50-feet tall, it’s a wonderful site to see. Visitors have come from as far as Canada and Puerto Rico to see this spectacular event! Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Gladwin

What we today know as Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Gladwin has undergone many changes over its near 1.5 centuries of existence. On October 5, 1881, Father James Byrne was appointed by the Archbishop of Detroit as the resident pastor for Midland, Gladwin, and parts of Gratiot counties. Mass was offered in homes every three months and lay people were appointed to give religious instruction until the priest returned.

In 1888, Gladwin became a mission of the parish in Pinconning, with Mass offered on the third Sunday of each month. Sufficient pledges were received in 1892 to build the original wooden Sacred Heart Church. Then, a donation by Judge John Shaffer in 1937 allowed for a new sanctuary and sacristy to be added.

In 1961 a larger brick church was constructed, but in the 1980s it underwent a modernization which removed much of the original interior’s distinctive artistry and character.

After many years of prayer, planning and discussion of needed improvements, the pastor and parishioners launched a capital campaign in 2018, naming it “God’s Work Through Our Hands.” In April 2021, the contract for interior renovations was approved, and Bishop Robert Gruss of the Diocese of Saginaw consecrated and reopened the church for worship that December 5th.
