Frames of Reference: Cultural, Subjective, Structural and Postmodern

The role of photographers has evolved from being “recorders” of history to those with a purpose to expose contemporary issues.

Climate Change and environmental issues including changes in the landscape can be highlighted by photographers. The CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year exposes the terrible impacts being wrought on our planet by humans, but also celebrates humanity’s innate ability to survive and innovate, lending hope to us all that we can overcome challenges to live sustainably.

Choose FIVE photos from the CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the year competition winners from the following site and then analyse them using the following information AS A PREZI INTERACTIVE.

• Provide a copy of each image you have chosen to analyse. • List the correct citation information for each photograph, including Name of photographer, date photo taken, location of photo, approximate F Stop and Film Speed. • Analyse each photo or artwork according to the Frames – Structural, Subjective, Cultural and Post – Modern. o Structural – What are the basic elements and principles in the photo? Colour or black and white? Composition? Depth of Field? Misty or Focused?

Does it include a central subject matter or is it a broad view of an environment or landscape? o Subjective – What is the artist trying to get you to feel? How does the artist feel themselves? What are they trying to communicate? o Cultural – each photo will be individually impacted by the culture in which it was taken. What cultural forces underlie the photo? Political/Social/Historical forces? How do these forces impact the way we read the photo? Post – Modern – was the photo taken for a reason? Was it commissioned? Was it on display in a gallery? Who commissioned it and why? How does this effect how we read the photo?

Task outcomes: CH3 Distinguishes between different points of view and offers interpretative accounts in critical and historical studies CH4 Explores ways in which histories, narratives and other accounts can be built to explain practices and interests in the fields of photography and/or video and/or digital imaging. CH5 Recognises how Photography and/or video and/or digital imaging is used in various fields of Cultural production

Instructions for Task Preparation: Each student will be led through how to create a Prezi document, how to research and how to complete an analysis according to the Frames and Conceptual Framework.
