We chose black because of its strength and richness and the fact that it tends to get overlooked as a color option. Black brings sophistication and balance to most compositions. An excellent alternative to metallics, it provides the perfect contrast to the ongoing trend for light and bright spaces whether as accents or full interiors.

ALABASTER We love an easy creamy neutral… it goes with anything and is so versatile.

There are several pieces in our home that reflect this color -- the vintage 60’s portrait over the stone mantel in our ballroom, a bust of Shakespeare in our library, some of the china that we collect. This color is as elegant as it is comfortable, suited to a cocktail party as well as a Netflix-in-pjs Friday night.

H

er sets will make you want to linger and even dream of spending the night. Presiding over 115,000 sq. ft. of showroom space at Universal, Janine Wagers’ job duties go beyond placing furniture, specifying

paint, and hanging pretty chandeliers. The short list includes electrical,

construction and budget plans, creating furniture floor plans for retailers, buying accessories, overseeing catering and cleaning crews, supervising the presentation of trash and recycling receptacles, and occasional bartending.

“Looking back on my life,” she says, “this is the perfect position for me!”

Each new collection offers Janine an opportunity to try out new design ideas such as this paper wall she made for Modern. “Making stuff is the fun part,” she says, “and I get paid to do it!”

1 How did your creativity manifest as a kid?

I grew up in Dalton, GA and always looked forward to Sunday driving with my parents. I loved looking at all different types of houses as we toured through town, and dreamt about living in some, and what my life might be like. I also took lots of art classes -painting, drawing, pottery, and drafting and shop in high school. Then I got a BFA in Interior Design from UGA. 2 Describe your career path.

It began at Bassett Furniture where I was hired as a furniture designer, and also helped start the Gallery Design

program. In ‘89 I started at Universal as a gallery designer, and the job evolved into showroom design. I had a toddler at the time, and realized that I needed more flexibility, and so I started my own design business, but kept Universal as my main client. Ten years ago, I came back to Universal as an employee. Budgets were tight but the new management wanted to raise the bar, and challenged me to express my creativity in ways that would wow buyers without taxing the bottom line. It’s been fun and exciting with a LOT of hard work along the way.

3 Each market most parts of the showroom get totally reworked. Where does the process start?

The process always begins one market ahead.

The first step is a deep discussion with the

product development team, so that we all understand the inspiration behind the new collection and how it will be positioned among Universal’s brands. Then a furniture layout is drafted, and we estimate construction costs for walls, special floors, etc. When costs are nailed down, the crew gets to work. I order furniture samples, and decide on paint and finishes, and coordinate removal of existing furniture so we have room for the new stuff. Everything arrives, and is placed and accessorized for PreMarket, and after that we tweak it all! The last thing done is floral.

4 You get to play with many different furniture styles. Which one stands out?

That would be Modern which was introduced in October. Modern was a real departure from anything we had done before. A total 180 from Paula Deen. I appreciated the history behind some of the pieces and that sense of nostalgia.

Everything was clean. Accessories were minimal, and the architecture we built to envelop the collection was stunning.

5 Your fingerprints are all over Universal’s recycling program. Tell us more.

When we were renovating the new showroom, word got out that Universal was environmentally friendly. We were using large tree slabs in our lobby and cafe, and the construction foreman would alert us to old trees that needed clearing. If Universal could remove them, we could have them. Hopefully using them for something beautiful like a table or door is better than firewood. I’m a tree hugger just trying to do the right thing!

Many designers have licensing dreams. A departure from the routine of conjuring complete residences and commercial spaces for clients, a product development project allows designers to share their passion on a broader scale. From furniture and art, to lighting and outdoor, here are four designer introductions coming to Steelyard.

Michelle Workman For French Heritage

Christopher Kennedy For Wendover

Thoroughly modern Michelle Workman has been under the spell of 1920’s Hollywood since she was a kid in L.A. It was no surprise, therefore, that when Henessy Wayser invited her to design a furniture collection, Michelle imagined an updated version of Art Deco that felt current and more femme.

Two years in the making, Facet honors Deco’s colors, angles and curves, exotic materials, and overall swank; gorgeous brass hardware tops off the aesthetic.

Seeing the first prototype was almost as thrilling as having a baby. Michelle says, “It’s like you’re finally here!”

While he expresses his creativity often — designing interiors and furniture, authoring books, and orchestrating the Christopher Kennedy Compound — creating artwork for others is satisfying on a whole other level. “It was freeing and inspiring to create this collection with Wendover,” says Christopher.

“It brought me back to my first year drawing and painting in architecture school. It has been a joy. ” The nearly 40-piece collection, in fact, features school sketchbook pages as well as abstracts on paper and canvas.

With California so ingrained in his being, Barclay Butera’s desire to create a beautiful exterior living experience runs deep. As the industrious designer launches his luxury furniture collection with Castelle, he offers his vision of the good (outdoor) life to other designers. In navy and white with touches of gold, Barclay Butera for Castelle is stylish, crisp, and comfortable. “The opportunity to work with a manufacturer that has incredible design capabilities is so freeing,” says Barclay, “and they interpreted our designs perfectly!”

Bunny Williams lights up Currey & Co.’s portfolio of designer collections with 15 light fixtures inspired by some of the accomplished designer’s favorite antiques from the 30’s to the 60’s.

Though Bunny Williams Home already had a line of private-label table lamps, Currey provided an exciting opportunity for her to design high-quality fixtures.

No stranger to the world of licensing, Bunny takes product development to heart, and advises, “Don’t put your name on anything you wouldn’t own.”
