WINTER 2017
THE (RE) ISSUE
Welcome
H
ello and Happy New Year. After producing a walloping 86-page
FOCUS in the fall, we decided that it would also be fun to do shorter issues more frequently that were...um...more FOCUSED. With that said, we dedicate our winter issue to the powerful prefix: RE. We love RE because it implies a clean slate. The past happened...but it’s not the boss of the future. RE provides opportunity to create a new strategy, path, choice, design. I am partial to “reinvent.” Want to play with REinvention? Directing Your Destiny author Jennifer Grace suggests how: “Reinvent yourself with Will and Grace. Will is the action and tenacity it takes to take your new dream or goal and make it a reality, and Grace is trusting that when all the Will is done, you can let go and allow everything to come together in one beautifully orchestrated moment.” RE REverberates meaningfully for us at Steelyard too because, in our 20th year, we are REemerging. I’m not going to give all the lovely details right here, but stay tuned and you will soon be privy to a REmodel that will make your hunting and gathering on Steelyard even better. If you haven’t been on Steelyard in a while, now is prime time to REengage because you won’t want to miss what’s coming soon. Long time Steelies and newbies, I am glad you are here.

DESIGNERS DO IT WITH STEELYARD
REsearch
Featuring Ophélie Renaudin
Ophélie Renaudin is an Associate Designer at Form Design Studio in Los Angeles. She uses Steelyard to expand her resource pool and keep her new finds and projects organized and readily available. What do you love about being an interior designer? Being an interior designer is my creative way to help people. I love solving problems. I came into design because I have always been fascinated by how space and people interact and how the environment impacts well-being and health.
How often do you Steelyard? About three times a week, but it really depends on the phase of the project.
How do Steelyard project folders help you? I use them in two ways. First, I have folders named after spaces such as Project Dining, Project Bedroom, etc. and whenever I find a product that I really like for a particular space, I put it in one of those. Done! Then I also have folders devoted to commercial and residential projects. Here I include inspiration photos, uploaded site photos, and materials and products that we are seriously considering and ordering.
How has Steelyard enhanced your practice? Steelyard is a powerful tool where product, catalogs, and services are brought together. I can search products in many ways and it often helps me beat the clock. As I am relatively new to the U.S. Market, I find this to be one among many of Steelyard’s strengths.

t’s cold and lots of time is spent indoors looking out. In view, the ever-changing sky in soothing shades of gray and blue which, like vapor, linger quietly. Mixing in warmer taupe and metallics feels right. There’s comfort in the bleakness and everyone is happy at home.

The Power of
RE
RE is the ultimate prefix. It can be tacked onto just about any word, but even used on its own, as its own action, its own hashtag, RE makes sense. So upbeat and fresh, RE suggests permission to start over. We “RE so much it was difficult to narrow down our favorites. However, after reexamining the nominees, the finalists are: REcenter, REaffirm, REconnect, and REvive.

Meditation is a healthful practice that increases mindfulness, lowers stress, and eases anxiety. While the most challenging part is getting started, one of the most fun parts is creating the environment in which to meditate. Think simple indulgences‌ comfort and calm with an altar to hold a few beautiful objects that inspire your best self.

Everybody needs downtime and a good soak or shower is a wonderful way to claim it. Water is a life source, flowing with oxygen-rich negative ions that heal and refresh, and even generate great ideas. As Scott Barry Kauffman, author of Wired to Create, observed, "The relaxing, solitary, and non-judgmental shower environment may afford creative thinking by allowing the mind to wander freely, causing people to be more open to their inner stream of consciousness and daydreams."

Not virtually or digitally, but tete-a-tete, face-to-face, knee-to-knee, ear-to-ear, and eye-to-eye …here’s to maximizing connections in 2017. Here’s to more listening, communing, and healing ideological differences. Sharing food, drink, fires, and cozy spaces. Here’s to circling up, joining hands, clinking glasses, and breaking bread.
