SUMMER 2016

Las Vegas is such a unique place (duh!). While the attraction is obvious on so many levels, I was compelled to delve beyond the tangible rewards and uncover the emotional benefits. I wanted to know the reason why bachelors, convention planners, and dreamers alike gravitate here time and again. I found that golden nugget of wisdom in an article about one of advertising’s most memorable campaigns -- “What happens here, stays here”. Before that seemingly simple slogan launched, a great deal of research went into its mastery. Led by Arnie DiGeorge, creative director at R&R Partners and husband of Jackie Von Tobel (one of our favorite Las Vegans), their findings revealed a special freedom embodying the city: “The emotional bond between Las Vegas and its customers was freedom. Freedom on two levels. Freedom to do things, see things, eat things, wear things, feel things. In short, the freedom to be someone we couldn’t be at home. And freedom from whatever we wanted to leave behind in our daily lives.” I love this comparison to freedom. It made me think about “the freedom to design” and how Steelyard with our 24/7 open policy contributes to the process and expands the market experience beyond time and geographic limits. No worries if you choose to linger at the hotel pool this morning or go for a short hike as you can see we did, Steelyard will continue to open doors to new brands and ideas everyday. Hope you enjoy FOCUS, produced with love and fun by Scotty, Sandy, Vera, Stacey and me. Happy market!

” Bull Smoke was inspired by French damask fabrics and wallpapers from the 18th century. I wove the skulls together as you would in traditional damask patterns so thatfrom a distance they read more ambiguous but when up close, the skulls and horns are revealed, and the two color ways completely change the mood of the paper. The bold pearl black surface is perfect for a heavy accent wall as the pattern subtly and mysteriously emerges like waves of smoke, whereas the pearlescent light grey color story makes for a soft ethereal environment.” ~ Dan Rizzo, Lead Artist, Mitchell Black

Each one-of-kind handmade piece starts with a springbok skull -- and yes, the springbok have died naturally-- which is embellished with pyrite, geodes, druzy, rock crystal clusters, agate, and seaglass. I hope the beauty and elegance of the springbok come across in each of these designs.” ~ Jamie Dietrich, Owner/Designer, Jamie Dietrich Designs

FOCUS - Q & A VOL 02. - SUMMER 16’

CLASSIC FROG - Pinned to Jana’s inspiration board is a handmade frog closure from Classical Elements. Made from machine-made tubular braid, it’s a great example of the modern trend in passementerie that fuses machine and hand-fabrication.

H

er story needs no embellishment. How a social science/ journalism grad from Berkeley transformed into the stylish Trim Queen of New York is a colorful tale of passion, fashion, and clever invention. Jana Platina Phipps came to the city to get New York out of her system, but after stepping foot inside a buzzing trimming factory, bid adieu to Cali and made NYC home. From the runway to interior design, Jana has made it her business and pleasure to be a designer, consultant, spokesperson, educator and blogger of the trim world. Someone, after all, has to speak up for trim - and not just the over-the-top 8” fringe on a sofa skirt but the subtle braid that effortlessly bridges the gap between chair seat and frame. 21

FOCUS - Q & A VOL 02. - SUMMER 16’

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

I’ve heard that being a royal can be high pressure. True?

Haha, funny — but you are astute! There is indeed some pressure being the Trim Queen. I am expected to know everything that is happening in the World of Trim. I also definitely feel pressure to create content on my channels daily, which has become easier over time as people tag and share their work for me to repost. Though my clients named me “Trim Queen”, I think of myself more as an ambassador, representing this unique category of textiles and promoting it’s creative applications.

How did your preoccupation with trim begin? I moved to NYC after college to get into the fashion business. My first job was with an accessory designer who sent me to a trimmings factory to source metallic military trim. The factory was whirring with industrial-era machines, Italian-American workers and artisans everywhere. Speaking half Italian (I’m part Italian and had studied in Venice) and half English, my Italian mentor Ginetta taught me everything she knew about passementerie. I remember hand-making Turk’s head knot buttons by the hundreds on Saturday mornings. I’ll never forget the dizziness of the excitement. I went on to start a home décor division of that company, and grew it to surpass apparel trim sales. When my vision expanded beyond their capabilities, I began consulting and sourcing globally for Classical Elements.

What role does trim play on a chair, pillow, or space? The texture and dimension that trimmings add elevates design, giving soul to furnishings or interiors, adding warmth, even provenance to a room, and making it more inviting. I call it “Trim Alchemy” -- the process of making something ordinary into extraordinary using trimmings. A grosgrain ribbon or a small gimp, for example, can hide the seam where fabric meets a wooden chair frame. It can also be sewn as a fretwork design on cushions to embellish a plain base cloth or elegantly outline the skirt of a sofa.

What should designers know about trim that you think they might not? I think some designers still consider trimmings frou-frou even though trimmings encompass lots of narrow textiles that are essential in finishing techniques. Additionally, a designer should know how trimmings are manufactured – by hand or machine, in linen or silk so they can more easily sell their design to their client.

Tell us about your side career as a DJ? I DJ locally for friends’ parties and at High Point I team up with Jason Oliver Nixon from Madcap Cottage. My taste is eclectic; I came of age as a valley girl in Cali, so I spin heavily from the 80s: Bow Wow Wow, Echo and the Bunnymen, English Beat, The Clash, Run DMC, Earth Wind & Fire... and then pepper in favorites to get people moving. Pumped Up Kicks (Foster The People), Short Skirt/ Long Jacket (Cake) and Brown Sugar (Rolling Stones) always fill up the dance floor. Tightrope by Janelle Monae is my theme song! You have to read the crowd and adjust the playlist impromptu mindful of the beats per minute so things mix well in transition, it’s really like putting together a my mood board!

“Trimmings” is a general term of the narrow goods used in home decor and apparel that either finish or embellish products made in fabric. Trim includes machine made articles like jacquard tape, cord, ribbon and bandings, but also include handmade designs including frog closures, tassels and braids. Passementerie literally means “to turn by hand” and grew out of the French artisan guild of the 1600’s; its resurgence is growing due to the artisan and maker movements.

“I scour the runway shows, as well as Pinterest, Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter and Facebook, and of course, plenty of magazines. I adore Cabana, World of Interiors and Hand/Eye for its artisanal focus and the grit of the photography! Fast Company always inspires me too!” Above: Jana’s design studio is in the former Continental Hotel in Peekskill, NY. The marble mantel, which now serves as magazine storage, is original to the c.1865 building.

Jana After Hours When DJ-ing recently at the Antiques by Zaar Good Karma Party in High Point, Jana was dressed for the occasion in a vintage kimono, headdress by Purely Patricia and Obi belt by Cotton and Quill. Jana’s Steelyard Covets “My living room is begging for a new set of sofas and this one from Emporium Home has beautiful French lines and is perfect for setting face to face as a pair. here’s nothing subtle about Vegas. An average of three-anda-half million people visit this sensory mecca each month to be transported beyond the everyday. Vegas is a bold place, a land of superlatives. It constantly and successfully strives to uphold its reputation as the hottest, brightest, swankiest and most beguiling destination on earth. And these furnishings, by their size, shape, color and pattern were imagined without inhibition as if everything is possible. And in Vegas, who’s to say it isn’t? 27

IN A CITY THAT OPENLY CELEBRATES EXCESS, DECADENCE, AND ACQUISITION, OUR EXUBERANT HUNT FOR THE PERFECT CHANDELIER CAN FEEL ALMOST WHOLESOME BY COMPARISON. AND THEN WE GLANCE AT THE NEWS, WHERE CONSTANT REMINDERS OF GLOBAL UNREST AND POVERTY MAKE IT HARD TO RECONCILE OUR PROFESSIONAL OBSESSION FOR BUYING AND SELLING PRETTY THINGS WHEN SO MANY IN THE WORLD ARE STRUGGLING FOR BASIC SURVIVAL AND FREEDOM. photos - from @feizyrugs above and @jaipurrugsfoundation right.

Two Rug Makers Create Solid Foundations for Success and Better Living

M

any in this industry are aware of crises and hone in on parts of the world where they can enact some change. Personally and professionally, they give through generous sponsorships and donations of time, talent, money and merchandise. And there’s a growing class of merchants who are working to empower labor and maximize quality of life across the supply chain. Steelyard loves how Jaipur Living and Feizy have made deliberate choices to not only source responsibly, but to elevate entire communities with conscientious commerce. The Jaipur Foundation is all about supporting their weavers by sponsoring multiple outreach initiatives in the villages where the artisans live and work. Their programs provide everything from medical care, literacy, vocational training, and legal services. Because every rug they sell takes them that much closer to their goal of lifting every community out of poverty, the motto of Jaipur’s founder, NK Chaudhary is “One rug can change the world”. An inspiring example of the power of these programs is a woman named Suman Devi, whose incredible story you can read about here and understand why it’s hard to overstate the ripple-effect these life-changing opportunities can have on families, villages, and even generations to come. Family-owned Feizy is also committed to serving the needs of the world’s most marginalized people, specifically children in developing nations who are born into communities where child labor and trafficking are the reality. They’ve partnered with the Global Fund for Children, whose mission is to mitigate-- and ultimately eliminate--the root causes of these practices. Says executive VP Leah Feizy: “We are fortunate to have the opportunity to help and protect thousands of children, and we are grateful for our amazing customers who have made this gift possible.” Responsible commerce has a powerful positive effect, and conscientious consumerism reinforces it. Jaipur and Feizy prove that it can be done without compromising quality or value. You can shop their showrooms at Las Vegas Market July 31-August 4 and on Steelyard anytime. Pre-shop both catalogs now on the Steelyard LVMKT Summer 2016 Planning Page.

What Designers Want BY JANE DAGMI

W

hile temperatures are soaring over 100 in Vegas, that can’t stop a determined group of interior designers and tastemakers from combing the World Market Center for the hottest home furnishings for present and future projects. Here’s what 10 of the design-obsessed are hoping to find.

“I attend most of the design markets in the U.S. and some abroad. Since much of what I see can be repetitive, I am keenly aware of what’s fresh and exciting. I am always on the lookout for new, emerging designers, vendors, products and trends across all product categories. Going to market can be like rummaging through a very large and beautiful flea market -- most of the product may not be for you, but when you find that perfect gem among the ordinary you feel like you have struck design gold. For me, the thrill of the hunt is the most exciting.” Jackie Von Tobel, Designer / Author - Las Vegas, NV

1) Lisa Escobar, Lisa Escobar Design, Las Vegas, NV “I have three goals this Market... score some super-luxe accessories for my Las Vegas Strip high rise project {think old Vegas, Rat Pack style}, find funky & pattern-heavy textiles for my edgy, art-loving clients, and lastly follow along @ LasVegasMarket Instagram account to see what fellow tastemakers are posting for the #ViewOnVegas. It’s impossible to see everything on my own, plus I love discovering what others come across. I may be biased, but Las Vegas Market is my absolute favorite event to attend because I’m able to accomplish so much in one {really big} place, plus... it’s home sweet home to me!”

2

2) Kelli Ellis, Kelli Ellis Interiors, Rancho Santa Margarita, CA “Putting on my finest hunting gear, tuning the tracking devices to hunt down the newest resource for cool, modern, DIFFERENT outdoor lighting...What a rare beast!” 3) Glen Peloso, Peloso Alexander Interiors, Toronto, ON “We are looking for new art and accessories suppliers for our Toronto Showroom. We’re expanding it and like to keep it fresh. Also we’re in search of some finishing touches for 4th quarter clients – meaning clients whose project will complete in the last quarter of this year – like narrow hall tables, drinks tables and amazing bar carts.”

3

4) Julia Buckingham, Buckingham Interiors + Design, Chicago, IL “I am always on the hunt for incredibly delish fabrics when I go to trade shows. The industry has such diverse offerings right now; but I seriously am crushing on velvets for the moment! If I could find some incredible sheer silkchiffon velvet in purple or a glam Devoré or crushed velvet in aqua I would be one happy girl. To the hunt!”

Our firm is embarking on some exciting projects that will be celebrating the best of the 1920s/Old Hollywood glam eras, and I want to see what inspirations are out there at this time.”

Neutral warm palettes with rich undertones that play well with the occasional splash of color. The shopping list for our retail store includes all things entertainment-focused: unique tabletop items, soft woven throws, candles in creative vessels, and gift items for the upcoming holidays. For our residential design clients, we’ll

also be focused on entertaining and updating for holiday time.

We’re looking out for looking out for area rugs, furniture and wall art to enhance living rooms, bar areas, and kitchens.” 8) Suzanne Felber, The Lifestylist Brand, Dallas, TX “We merchandise quite a few prefab model homes and show houses, and this summer I’m honing in on personality pieces, those unique finds like vintage silver for tabletops or the perfect quirky furniture piece that once you see it, you can’t live without. That’s what keeps us coming back to the Vegas Market.
