Thesis Project about public space Politecnico of Turin [Turin, Italy] Manhattan, NY [USA] 2010
FULL VERSION: http://issuu.com/stefaniatoso/docs/infinitebroadway
// Infinite Broadway is the result of a year-long period of research about the American public space and Manhattan open spaces, implemented by a three-months staying in NY. The project is a sort of provocation, a 13 miles long square: it is the transformation of the oldest and longest street of the island - and the only diagonal one in the rigid grid - in a long square, caracterized by different identities, as many as are the diverse neighborhoods that it crosses. // The diagonal, completely pedonalized, becomes a slow long plaza, in contrast with the congestion of road system of the island. All the neighborhoods are considered as little islands, with their own identities, traditions, costumes and history, where the public space is lived and sculptured in very different ways. // In order to mantain the perception of a long continue space, the 13 miles are the result of the sequence, always different and with multiple variations, of five categories of public space, already existing in the manhattan public landscape: plazas, parks, markets, arcades and rooftops. In this way, what emerges is a new landscape, a new horizontal landscape, made possible by the basements line: starting from the actual activities and from their historical fronts, it’s possible to generate a project of the public space that lays in between them. In every section of the Broadway street, there will be a different space as a consequence of basements and neighborhoods and identities: the verticality of New York City almost desappears and only what is in a human scale remains and matters. // For every category of public space in which the Broadway is divided, there is a new different movement of the pavement: plazas are excavated, markets are located in a raised level, parks are at the same soil level, arcades are at different levels as they can be covered passages or terraces and rooftops are at the last floor of buildings. So, Broadway will be lived at different heights, but always by pedestrians and cyclists, in a slow movement and life. What is important is that every space is really flexible and adapted to the Broadway section and the result is a long continue and coherent space, but original and always new.

A public underground plaza in Athens Workshop about history and trasformations of Athens Athens [Greece] 2009 Manuel Aires Mateus e J.P. Silva - Aires Mateus Associados [tutors] with D. Barreri, P.Borghino, S.Carera, C.Hondos, P.Dufour, S. Filippopoulou, M.Fytou, F.Pasqualini, A.Pefani, E.Perez Jurado, V.Tripoli, M.Tsarouchi, F.Vidal Tudela [working team]
// The square is a place of social and cultural gathering. A place of sharing, bonding, a celebration of the gregarious need that people have. Greece founded the western culture and established the square as a central ground in that way of living. In Athens, shade defines paths, usages and behaviours. The sun can be gentle or cruel and a square has to observe it. In our time the protection from hostile motorized traffic is crucial. It devolves the human scale to the urban mesh, and permits the serenity and dignity that a square needs to regain. In a harsh urban environment, trees and gardens are relieving elements. They produce shade and supply a tranquil detachment from quotidian rituals. // The proposal developed by the group returns answers to the identified guidelines. Whilst leaving the void in the construction density at the street level, a new space is proposed: a protected environment from the weather, the urban turmoil and the predictable. A shelter that is anchored in the possibilities that it creates. A new canvas able to support as many activities as the urban invention can suggest. Art performances, fairs, sports or music events are all possible cultural expressions that can be welcomed. The technical constraints are used to evoke the structural iconography that has reached us through out the time. A large colonnade is created as the basis to a reinvented atmosphere. // A gap between levels produces the entrance to this perimeter of possibilities. The design of this entrance is a free gesture, accomplice to the city and not declaring a protagonist geometry. Using this opening, the internal forest of columns relates to the exterior by contemplating trees that are left untouched. The chance of reasoning about this particular opened area was a pretext that yearned to find common denominators in the urban square. It surpassed the resolution of specific aspects of Teliki Plateia, and was centred on triggering a reflexion on the Athenian Plateia.

A research on the Terriorial Plan for Milan Internship at METROGRAMMA Milan [Italy] 2008 Andrea Boschetti, Alberto Francini and Sara Salvemini [tutors] with V.Baglione, G.Quarta, S.Radoni, S.Tammaro, C.Testa [working team]
// Metrogramma worked on the definition of a strategy for the general planning scheme of Milan (PGT- Territorial Government Plan) towards the Universal Expo 2015. In short, they are concentrating on all the aspects connected to the urban themes such as open spaces, infrastructures, buildings, services. Metrogramma coordinated the scientific management of the city-planning scheme, project, general vision and urbanistic form. // The working team concentrates on a particular area in the southern part of Milan territory, characterized by the presence of a massive infrastructural system, which causes a series of difficulties in the districts all around. Moreover, the different cultures of the inhabitants of these districts make the long ‘boulevard’, which is the main street of the road system, a sequence of diverse identities. The lack of public spaces, especially the green ones, in Milan is particularly evident and clearly underlined by the many conflicts between ethnic groups. // As the south of Milan hosted the agricultural activities of the whole city and some farms can still be seen with their yards, today it is possible to trace some open green spaces as a heritage of this past: but as they are not linked and connected, today it is impossible to understand the continuity of what remains of the green system. // Therefore, the solution proposed is to convert the main road in a long green ‘boulevard’, with huge pedestrian paths and a strong and reliable public transport system in the center of it. The source of inspiration of this work is clearly been identified with the model represented by the ‘Rambla’ in the metropolitan city of Barcelona. // This new long and continue public green boulevard can also gather all together the many little green parks and vacant lots all around it, transforming the south of Milan in a virtous model of sustainable urban regeneration.

The design of a green roundabout for a better traffic circulation with a particular environmental attention O Design Unit at the Politecnico of Turin P Turin [Italy] Y 2008 T Gustavo Ambrosini and Guido Callegari [tutors] P
// The traffic increase in the northern Turin, generated by the presence of new touristic fluxes to the Venaria historical residences and to Caselle International Airport, causes the need of the implementation of a infrastructural system, with new highways and new intersections. The proximity to a little neighborhood of the project area for the new roundabout implies a particular attention to the character of the new space and the presence of a pedestrian circulation. // The project introduces a new public space inside the complex roundabout, terraced and seven meters under the street level, which, like a little and intimat e park, allows to protect from the underground highway view and to balance the air pollution. In order to allow the pedestrian permeability between the four different direction, four footpaths have been designed, made by wood texture pavings and connected together by a central platform, a kind of public square right above the park. Entrances of these four footpaths are particularly underlined by corten surfaces, that made them more visible, even in foggy days. // The final result is a sort of green amphitheater, that is able to re-def ine the plain landscape of the marginal area with a good integration with infrastructural system.

Curator’s Assistant for the International Exhibition about urban sustainable architecture in the Barbara Cappochin International Biennial of Architecture O METROGRAMMA P Padua [Italy] Y 2011 T Andrea Boschetti, Alberto Francini Paolo Monello [photographer] P
// ‘SUPERURBANO. Sustainable Urban Regeneration‘ - curated by Andrea Boschetti with Grammatiche Metropolitane - is an international exhibition prom oted by the Barbara Cappochin Foundation, i n collaboration with the Municipality of Padua, Veneto Region, the International Union of Architects (UIA) and the National Council of Architects (CNAPPC). The international exhibition, with an installation designed by Andrea Boschetti and Alberto Francini - Metrogramma - and Michele De Lucchi - aMDL -, for the 5 t h Barbara Cappochin Biennial, is focused on a very sensitive issue, whih is sustainability and regeneration in urban environm ents of world’s cities. // The exhibition, that has been set in the ancient and prestigious Palazzo della Ragione in Padua from 28.10.11 to 13.02.12, represented the first one to deal with a theme and not based on an architect’s monograph as in the pas t - the last one was centered on Zaha Hadid work-. The meaning of this edition of the Foundation Capocchin Barbara, considering most of all the social and economic crisis that is sweeping the western world, is to send a signal of attention to the crucial issue of sustainable urban regeneration. // The exhibition explores through the showing of eighteen urban transformations, considered virtuous and exemplary in many respects, man’s life in the cities of tomorrow. Samples taken as models of good design practices, drawing on the guidelines of the European Union - through the document ‘Europe 2020’ - indicating the need for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. It represents a glimpse of an allegorical city of the future, conceived as a spectacular theatrical production in which the visitor can move, see, learn and participate emotionally; it takes visitors on a journey full of surprises and emotions, through a compact city yet ethereal and essential. The p ro j e cts o n d i sp l a y, through a sophisticated multi-media project, allow the public to virtually enter into different realities all over the world.

// T h e n e w p u b l i c s w i m m i n g p o o l f o r the city of Cuneo, in the southern part of Piedmont (Italy), has been developed within the framework of a sustainable approach, due to its location in the middle of a green and protected park. The direct link with the historical center thanks to an urban lift determined a special attention to the aesthetic facade design, which has been defined as a dark blanket familiar with the natural landscape that surrounds the buildng. // A l a r g e a n d s p e c i a l a t t e n t i o n h a s been reserved to the design of the external areas and public square, near the parkings lots, in order to develop a better dialogue with the existing urban context and create a new urban reference point for citizens and the swimming pool users. With a simple and clear design, the building has been conceived as and open and transparent box, in order to make the internal and external activities and functions communicate and dialogue between themselves and with the mountains landscape.

An abandoned sacred space rivisited for the city of Brussels O II Workshop ‘Abandoned Sacred Spaces’ P Brussels [Belgium] Y 2009 T Michele Bonino - Studio MARC and Tomà Berlanda [tutors] and with Marco Marovic, Ketsia Reismaa, Kim Vanuytsel [working team] P
// When thinking about the materialisation of a church, we came to the conclusion that air is the main material. It takes in the largest space in the building. It contains the specific atmosphere of the church. The main goal of the project is to preserve this typical atmosphere. On the other hand, there is also an aspect of the church that definitely need to be changed. The key is to change the main rules and traditions. Therefore in the ‘rivisited’ church people are forced to think for themselves. They have to make their own decisions and really commit to being there. The new boundaries created can be considered as decision points and as difficulties to cross to another level. The walls on itself are no boundaries. By crossing the first part of the church, the entrance, you come into the real and true public space. The boundary makes it easy to access the public space but makes it hard to return. This public space is very flexible, it can be used for different kinds of public events. It is actually an extension of the outside. // From this area you can choose to move up to a superior level by crossing another boundary. This boundary is harder than the previous one and works in the opposite way. It’s very hard to cross it but easier to come back to the public space. The proportions are always similar in every situation, but the exact dimensions change within every case.
// The whole project is based on a symbology, typical of religous spaces, but actually adapted to a public space, a contemporary one.

A masterplan for the Lignano Sabbiadoro waterfront and a project for a library in front of the sea O Design Unit at the Politecnico of Turin P Lignano Sabbiadoro [Italy] Y 2009 T Stefano Pujatti [tutor] P
// Thinking about public shorelines usually means to think about traditional touristic spaces, crowded in the summertime and desertic in the wintertime. That’s why re-thinking Lignano mainly means to re-think about how people use shores and live in them all year long. Moreover, the corrosion produced by sea salted water requires a research on how a material like the concrete can survive for years, without loosing its identity in the project. // The whole materplan is based on the creation of a loop, a public space constitued by a circle line, that embraces the historical vacation center with hotels and apartments for rent. This district of the city center is the epicenter of summer life, but , in fact, during wintertime it’s completely abandoned and un-used by citizens. But its richness in public space and beauty in its relationship with the seaside are worth being lived. The presence of an historical modern building on a clear axis with the main square of the district constitues an important element of balance and a landmark for the new public loop. // To emphasize this historical and important axis, the project focuses on a new trasversal public space, which consists in a series of connected pools, filled by the sea water, following the moon phases. The modern building is implemented by a new one and becomes a public libr ary in front of the sea, with a promenade with an amazing view of the bay on the rooftop. // In that way, citizens and tourists can easily perceive the presence of the sea and establish a new relationship with it, which is directly shaping the public space of the whole city.

// The focus of this initiative born from Prof. F. Fischnaller and II Facoltà di Architettura, Polytechnic of Turin Italy is formative and educative. Prof. Curto Rocco, Dean of the II Faculty of Architecture Politecnico of Turin, one of the institutional partners of this initiative, states: “One of our major interests is the valorization of the architectonic, urban and environmental cultural heritage and patrimony, with particular attention to new media, interactive techniques and innovative technologies, that can enhance cultural heritage knowledge appreciation and fruition, as well as edutainment activities based in cultural heritage experiences.” // The project consists of the transformation of Valdo Fusi plaza in an interactive urban environment, not only by converting all the buildings surfaces in interactive ones, but also by showing what happens all around Turin in one place, in order to improve mobility and cultural and social knowledge for citizens and turists. // The ‘low impact’ represented by the non-distructive action of the project can be a useful exemple for the functional restoration of many public spaces, almost abandoned and considered as voids - in terms of lack of contentsby the population.

S E D U TA DI QUARTIE RE. AN INCLUSIVE P U B L I C S PAC E Organization of a neighborhood street party in order to improve the dialogue between citizens and artists O Grammatiche Metropolitane P Milan [Italy] Y 2011 T Andrea Boschetti, Antonella Florence, Alberto Francini, Leopoldo Freyrie, Nicola Russi [tutors] P
// ’Seduta di Quartiere’ can be defined as a real street party as in the English ‘tradition’. It was the first initiative promoted by NIL28 and its thirty creative members: a 130 meters long table, made by recycled wood, divided into thirty single table for the thirty offices artistic installations. The long table occupied a public space in Via Cadolini in Milan, during the ‘Sal one del Mobile’, one of the most important event in Milan, related to design world. The ‘Salone del Mobile’ usually takes place in the city center of Milan, while ‘Seduta di Quartiere’ took place in a pheripherical area of Milan, as an unconventional event. // The aim of the event was to start a new dialogue between citizens and artists of the neighborhood by sitting at the same table, eating, playing and watching performances all together. The only rule: take your own seat!

STUDENTS WORKSHOP Leader student in the organization of a series of three workshops, an exhibition and a conference about a bamboo module for emergency O Politecnico of Turin P Turin [Italy] Y 2010 T Nuccia Maritano Comoglio, Angela Lacirignola and Irene Caltabiano [tutors] with S. Peditto and M. Severini [working team] and with S. Martin and J. Savarese [designers of the bamboo module] P
// As group of students from the Politecnico of Turin, thanks to the Fund for students activities, we builded a bamboo prototype in Turin in May 2010. The aim was to promote the use of bamboo as a building material, expecially in emergency conditions for instant shelter. // Thanks to the collaboration with two architects, it was possible to build a ‘box’ for emergency, by which assembly a bamboo repair, made by modules. The organization of the entire bamboo session was constitued by three workshops for thirty students for each one, a conference and an exhibition, which took place in the Castello del Valentino in Turin, with all the materials of the ‘learning by doing’ process.
