Batikent RMJM

was an International competition for the design and construction of a multi-use building complex consisting of 60% residential and 40% retail and office spaces. With a total of 1.5 million square meters, the batikent project is an example of the large scale urban interventions that the future is demanding. Inspired by the hills of Ankara the design is respectfull of the site’s topography and creates a new topological identity for the area

Depositorium

In this new age cities are expanding and slowly devouring the landscape that surrounds them. The need for development and expansion is a given, however we must propose new ways of achieving this. If we want to protect the landscape we must set an outer boundary for a city• but how do we then achieve progress? In this scenario the boundary itself becomes a building, a city, a society, that encapsulates the existing and reforms it by limiting it. The “Depositorium” is one such boundary that has topological significance for the city of Volos. It surrounds the city with an ever-expanding structural network on which one can deposit his identity by creating space in which to live, or by contributing to the society that is born there. Deriving from memories and history the “Depositorium” has become a metaphorical center of labor, industry, culture and progress. For years Volos had a prospering naval industry and it is this industry that the “Deposritorium” is based on. By creating a shipyard on land we strive to give life back to an otherwise forgotten history. This landmark has an expanding capacity of 50,000 residents many of which work on the shipyard while others contribute to the society in other ways. At one point during an endless cycle of labor and rebirth a ship is completed as a representation of the society’s achievements in industry and culture. When a ship is completed and begins its journey, it takes with it memories and parts of the culture that created it, in an effort to spread those ideals to other parts of the world. First and foremost, the “Depositorium” is a new society and a new way of imagining the city of tomorrow, a heterotopian vision of a new model of habitation and social structure.

Towards a new Eroticism of Space The Masters

The issue, really, is the absence of the erotic city. It forces us to ask: what do our spaces reflect about our treatment of sexuality? Where are the public city brothels? Why aren’t we holding drunken orgy celebrations open to all? Post-‘Sins of the flesh’ West creates a public suppression of sexuality and eroticism. There is barely open talk of eroticism, let alone (public) spaces of eroticism. Our lack of public erotic spaces reflects our general maltreatment of eroticism. The only exceptions for publicly accessible erotic-spaces are ones where sexuality is commoditized. Brothels, strip clubs, several brothels (red light districts) are the few examples. It seems moral issues over eroticism can be put aside if there are financial incentives.

I do not argue for public erotic spaces, I argue for communal erotic spaces. A public space is still within authoritative control. It is not so much a problem that there aren’t civic orgies, but it is a problem that there aren’t San Franciscan type bathhouses where strangers can engage in kinky sex with each other. There is value in that erotic spaces are not civic spaces. The value of even a private erotic space is partly due to its ability to be beyond formal control. The semi-autonomous and communal aspects of San Franciscan bathhouses make it a prime example. We need to keep the semi-autonomous part of the current state of eroticism and make it communal. The opportunity still exists for the creation of semi-autonomous communal erotic spaces. The pop-up orgy? The instant bathhouse? Hieros Gamus night?
