About this Book BY BILL GODFREY, GONE NATIVE COMMUNICATIONS, INC.
I
’M LEARNING TO SURF. I’m no kid, so this is no easy feat. Surfing is not like tennis or soccer or even skateboarding. With surfing you need to first get out to the waves, pick a suitable wave on which to ride, paddle into position, stand up at the correct time and then hopefully not fall off. After legitimately catching my first wave this summer, I completely understand what surfers call, “the stoke.” And from what other surfers tell me, I may be chasing that feeling for the rest of my life. I paddle out into the ocean because I almost can’t resist. There’s a special magic that permeates the air around here and every day I’m grateful I get to breathe it in. Whether you’re a native to this area or simply visiting for a day or two, I hope you can tap into that same stoke and ride it all the way in. There’s something about the way the sun hits the Earth around here. Combine that with the kinetic energy of the ocean and the flowing breezes and you’ve got a very special place. Add in one-of-a-kind shopping, awardwinning restaurants, comfortable accommodations, endless activities and a service industry that’s ready to meet your every whim and you’ve got Ocean City, New Jersey – America’s Greatest Family Resort. Some of you already know what I’m talking about. You live here or you return every year because you almost can’t resist. Your soul requires regular infusions of the beach and Boardwalk and Downtown and sun and salt and all the good stuff we have here. Come Groundhogs Day you start to make the same jokes about Memorial Day being only
116 days away. We understand. And we live it too. If you’re new to this experience I ask that you take a deep inhale of that salt air and let it flow through your body. Allow yourself to relax. Embrace everything that makes Ocean City special and you may find yourself hooked. Let us help you make the most of your time in OC. Within the pages are listings of the best restaurants, the most unique shops, the coolest activities, the comfiest accommodations, and all the amenities you may need while you’re here. Check the table of contents – there are a lot of service providers in this book. Looking for a gym while you’re here? Got it. Checking wedding locations and services? Got that too. Golf or emergency medical attention? Mm hmm. Want to live here? We’ve got real estate agents. Go ahead and page through this book. The photos alone are well worth it. This year we’re celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Welcome to Ocean City guidebook. That’s right, you’re reading our 10th edition! We’re able to present all that is best about Ocean City each year because of the support of our advertisers and you, dear reader. So please, go check out the businesses you see on these pages. Tell them you saw them in here as you eat your waffles and ice cream, rent your kayak, or buy your dream home. We are thankful for our sponsors and all of you who support them. So if the spirit moves you into the surf this year, take my advice and take it easy. Enjoy the slow learning curve and embrace it. Like everything about Ocean City there’s no need to rush or stress. Enjoy the moment and hopefully you’ll experience the Ocean City stoke.

This is your happy place.
W
Welcome to Ocean City, NJ!
HETHER YOU’VE CROSSED IT ONCE, hundreds of times or never before, chances are the first glimpse of Ocean City as you go over the bridge gives you a flutter of excitement that you can feel down to your toes. You know you’re heading to your happy place. This is where laughter can be heard over the crashing waves, where princes and princesses build the castle of their dreams in sand, where family memories are made every day. The first waft of that salty air makes your breath slow down instantly... you’re on island time now. This salt actually lowers your blood pressure. Welcome. Ocean City is eight miles of well-kept beaches, the two-and-a-half-mile Boardwalk, the Downtown Asbury Avenue shopping district, the inviting bay where you can play all day on the water, plus all the unique neighborhoods throughout the island. Families from all over the country come to Ocean City to sit on her shore, look at her ocean, feel the warm breeze in their hair and most of all, relax and build memories together. Ocean City receives accolades just about every year for having one of the best beaches in America. But in 2016, the island rose to the top and was voted Best Beach in America by Coastal Living Magazine. It’s no surprise – OC takes pride in keeping its beaches clean, safe and ready for your visit. If you’re looking for a first-class vacation, Ocean City has everything – beaches, Boardwalk (okay, we mentioned that), big-city shopping, outstanding dining options, a municipal airport, golf course, recreational fields, special events,
family festivities... we’re talking endless possibilities here. Together with the bustling Community Center (housing the Arts Center, Historical Museum, Aquatic and Fitness Center, and Free Public Library), there’s the famed Music Pier (home of the Ocean City Pops and Greater Ocean City Theatre Company performances), the Bayside Center and more. Whether you’re here for a day, the week, or perhaps the rest of your life, we’ve got plenty for you to do. Let’s start at the tip of the Atlantic. Ocean City has miles of soft, clean sand from one end of the island to the other. Put on your explorer hat and take a beach walk. They are offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in summer. For more details, see the events on page 16. Guarding these beaches is the Ocean City Beach Patrol, one of the oldest in the country. Follow their instructions and remember to always SWIM NEAR A GUARD and listen for their whistle. Move inland a few feet and you’ll come across the Ocean City Boardwalk, a two-anda-half-mile stretch lined with shops and restaurants of every kind, a movie theatre, amusement rides, miniature golf courses and a water park like no other. The Boardwalk hosts free weekly family events such as Character Nights, where you can meet the Boardwalk Mascots and get their autograph. There are planned fireworks nights, too. See page 106 for more info on Boardwalk fun. When it comes to shopping, Ocean City has what you need. Asbury Avenue and the Downtown Shopping District from 6th to 14th Streets is a destination. Our Historic Downtown is a collection of over 100 shops and cafes. OC retailers

put their heart and soul into their businesses and that makes for a top-notch retail experience all year round. Mixed in are made-by-you studios and service providers along a street lined with bright flowers and smiling people. There are also a ton of special events in the Downtown during the year, including Market Days, Funtastic Tuesdays and a lot more. See page 95 for more info on the Downtown, between the beach and the bay on the Avenue. Continuing toward the west is what the locals refer to simply as “the bay” – Peck Bay and the Great Egg Harbor Bay – where you’ll find every
water sport imaginable, including kayaking, sailing, boating, fishing, crabbing, SUP, and more. There are great opportunities to see pristine ecosystems up close and personal. Ocean City can make every member of your family happy. From your toddler to your teenager, your grandpop to your uncle, there’s fun waiting for everyone. Use this book to plan all your stops during your time here and your next visit to Ocean City. With this many exciting things to do, places to go, fab things to buy, and delish foods to eat, there’s much to explore and experience together. Happy vacationing!

Captain Kidd oversees his treasure being buried. 24
Pillage & Plunder The true tales and legends of pirates and privateers in southern New Jersey by Deborah Worchel
H
ave you ever spotted a beachgoer sweeping a metal detector back and forth and wondered what they could possibly be hoping to find? Wonder no more... if you listen to the legends and lore of Cape May County, you’ll know they could be hunting for buried treasure left behind by pirates centuries ago. Both legend and local history reveal that the waters off the coast of Cape May County were frequented not only by pirates in the conventional sense, but by privateers as well, who sailed a thin line between the law and illicit profits gained through selling captured goods. Believe it or not, Ocean City even has a history of land pirates, also known as “mooncussers.” Big name pirates, including Captain Kidd and Blackbeard both sailed the South Jersey coastline during the “Golden Age of Piracy,” which stretched roughly from 1680 to 1720. Captain Kidd originally hoped to gain a command in the British Navy. When this failed, he sought out and was granted a privateering license by the King of England to seek out and capture French ships. It didn’t take long for Captain Kidd, egged on by his crew, to attack and capture ships of other nationalities to plunder them and split their booty with his crew. Consequently, the British Government officially declared him a “pirate” and put a bounty out for his arrest. Captain Kidd allegedly decided to return to Boston to defend his reputation, but first sailed up the New Jersey coastline to both hide some of his booty and to buy safety and pardons along the way from colonial politicians. Kidd was captured, thrown in jail, and sent to England to stand trial. In the book Shipwrecks and Legends of Cape May County, authors David Seibold and Charles Adams III note that Kidd claimed at his trial that he could come up with 100,000 pounds to defend himself or buy his freedom. Additionally, he wrote to the governor of Massachusetts that he could dig up 50 pounds of gold for favors. Kidd was ultimately found guilty and hanged for his crimes of piracy, but the majority of his crew was released. Two crew members reportedly settled in South Jersey, adding to speculation that Captain Kidd did indeed bury treasure somewhere in the area. Multiple writers and historians speculate that Cape May is a likely
25
possibility for hidden treasure because of its location and because it was well known as a stopping place for pirates and privateers alike as it was a good place to restock with fresh water. The mouth of Tom’s River is another area known as a stopping place for pirates as it afforded them protection from the elements as well as a good place to sell some smuggled goods for profit to local merchants. “Citizens were often in on it, winking their eye,” said Lee A. Ireland, PhD and author of America’s Pirates and Their Hidden Treasures. Citizens could profit from trading supplies for ocean going ships for some of the booty the ships had collected at sea. William McMahon, author of South Jersey Towns, refers to a Brigantine legend which claims Captain Kidd anchored his ship near the mouth of Brigantine Inlet in 1698 and came ashore in a long boat with a heavy chest which they buried on the island. The legend goes on to claim that Kidd later returned and dug the chest up, relocating it somewhere else along the South Jersey coastline. Blackbeard the Pirate, whose real name was either Edward Teach or Edward Thatch, also sailed the waters off our coastline while traveling between his favorite haunts off the coast of the Carolinas and the city of Philadelphia. Local legend holds that Blackbeard’s first mate was a man by the name of Israel Hand, who was originally from Cold Spring in Cape May, and sailed on board a merchant vessel to the Caribbean. That ship was ransacked by pirates, and according to tradition, Hand became a pirate. Some speculate that it was Israel Hand who convinced Blackbeard to enter New Jersey waters. In Shipwrecks and Legends ‘Round Cape May, Seibold and Adams quote a modern day treasure hunter, Ed Michaud, who relates an anecdotal tale connecting Ocean City to Blackbeard the Pirate. Michaud says that in the mid 1940s, an Ocean City man came forward with a tattered parchment document he said had been passed down through his family for generations. He claimed it had originally been given to a family member by a dying member
26
of Captain Kidd’s crew at the time of the Revolution. The ancestor’s name was “Hand,” and Michaud speculates that this may have been Israel Hand and that it was really Blackbeard’s crew to which he belonged. Michaud argues that numerous newspaper accounts from the time refer to ships “being ransacked and pulled into this area of the cape” and he attributes this activity to Blackbeard, noting that Israel Hand is mentioned in both the biographies and stories of Blackbeard, as well as the histories of Cape May.
method of piracy required dark and moonless nights. On such nights, these land-pirates would walk along the beach with a line of horses or mules with lanterns hung on their saddles in an attempt to lure ships ashore. Records indicate that settlers near Peck’s Beach (which later would become Ocean City) would visit the beach at night to engage in this activity and would also use cows or goats to lure the ships in by tying a lantern to their tails and letting them loose to wander the beach. Ships at sea would notice the
In an interesting connection between fact and fiction, Captain Kidd, Blackbeard, and Israel Hands are all mentioned in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, and some claim it was Stevenson’s visit to Point Pleasant beach in New Jersey which inspired him to write the book. As if pirates on the waters weren’t enough for colonial trading ships to be wary of, they had the added threat of land-pirates, also known as “mooncussers.” These land pirates got their nickname from “cussing” the nights on which the moon shone because their
line of lights and think that it was another ship. As they steered toward it, they would become stranded or run aground in the shallow waters near the beach. The land-pirates would then rush the ship and “salvage” whatever they could. The law or custom of the time loosely allowed the first person to reach a ship abandoned by its crew to claim the cargo and so the mooncussers engaged in this questionable activity to bring about a shipwreck. It is even possible that land-pirates were behind the wreck of a British ship loaded
with stamps and stamp paper to enforce the new Stamp Act which wrecked on Absecon Beach in September of 1765. In the years leading up to the American Revolution and then during the Revolution itself, a legal form of piracy, known as privateering, played a huge role in the culture and economy of South Jersey. According to Arthur Pierce, author of Smuggler’s Woods, an 18th Century privateer “was a ship privately owned, privately armed and equipped, and bearing a license... authorizing it to prey on enemy commerce.” Prior to the American Revolution, England often engaged colonists as privateers in order to both safeguard her ships and prey on the ships of her enemies. Once the revolution began, the colonists began to use this tactic against Britain in a variety of ways. Alfred Heston’s South Jersey, A History notes that the British occupied Philadelphia for much of the war and New York for nearly all of the war and that provisions for the British soldiers came via ship into the harbors and ports of New York and Philadelphia, both of which were accessed via the waters of southern New Jersey. Pierce, in fact, writes that “Little Egg Harbor was the number one privateering center of New Jersey and New Jersey itself the most dangerous, to the British, stretch of coastline on the whole Atlantic seaboard.” The colonial privateers succeeded in wrecking many British vessels during the Revolutionary period, resulting in loss of revenue from goods as well as increased costs to insure outgoing ships from England. So next time you’re relaxing on the soft Ocean City beach, gazing out at the Atlantic, keep in mind these words from Lee Ireland, “You can’t stand on a beach in New Jersey and look a mile in any nautical direction without spying a shipwreck.” Who knows? If you are lucky enough, perhaps one day the surf will wash in some lost pirate treasure right at your feet.

Fly a kite and do a loop de loop
3
Grab your favorite mate and rent a tandem bike for a tour de Ocean City. With its wide streets, dedicated bike lanes, and two and a half mile Boardwalk, OC is perfect for cruising on two wheels.
The movie Mary Poppins had it right – go fly a kite and send it soaring up through the atmosphere. You’ll feel great as it lifts higher and higher and gracefully bobs to the beat of the wind. Add in a trick or two and you have family time at its flynest, er, finest.

Ride every thrill ride
There’s something to the tactical play of a pinball game that really gets our inner child screaming with delight. From the first button push to the lever pull and the perfect timing attempts – this is a game worthy of our quarters. Choose one you love, and see how high of a score you can get. We want to see your initials up there.
The thrill is in the eye of the beholder. That famous saying really hits the nail on the head. One man’s “bumper cars” is another man’s “double shot.” Or maybe what you see is what you get. Go for it!

Grab local produce and handmade treats at the Farmers Market
This isn’t for the lactose intolerant. If you’re an ice cream or fro yo lover like we are, then challenge yourself to a taste test of 5, 10, or 20 (!) parlors in town. You’ll meet new people, increase your ice cream aptitude, and basically be soarin’ on sugar. What could be better than that?!
6
Create a “creature spot list” and see how many you can check off
From foxes to piping plovers, OC is filled with adorable creatures that will delight you as you observe from afar. Come up with a list of all the wildlife you may see, and check it off as you spot them.
Darn skinny plank! One day I’ll perfectly hit my bright pink ball up that slope and watch it disappear into the dark, circular abyss. The sirens will go off, ticker tape will somehow fall from the sky, and the crowd will carry me off in a parade of winning. If you have dreams of deflecting the inevitable bounce off on the last hole, this challenge is for you. Good luck.
This open air market is a weekly must have in summer. From fresh oysters to heirloom tomatoes to tart and creamy key lime pie, you’ll find some seriously good eats along the white tented stretch of the Tabernacle grounds. The produce is colorful and bountiful and there are fresh flowers, and crafts, too.
9
Read five local author books (this counts as one!)
Reading on the beach is spectacular. That’s right, and we mean reading an actual book, like this one you’re holding in your hands (thank you by the way!). Grab whatever genre you love (or try a history book by our friend, Fred Miller) and hit the beach. No rice required if you accidentally drop it in the wet sand.

Hike the trails in Corson’s Inlet
The natural beauty of Ocean City is arguably nowhere more apparent than it is at this southend state park. There are trails throughout leading from the bay to the beach. Get up close and personal with the ecosystem of the island.

Fish off the Ninth Street Bridge
Though it feels like it was just built yesterday, the new Ninth Street Bridge has actually been open five years. If you haven’t fished off of its dedicated fishing pier, now is the time. There’s plenty of free parking, too.
Kayak or SUP through the Rainbow Islands
It’s hard to describe how different the feeling of being on a kayak or SUP is compared with a power boat. You’re moving with your own power, kept up by the bouncing water, and are close to the wonders of nature. Really close. If you’re ready for a different kind of view, take a guided tour through the wetlands and learn, feel, and do.
Take a surfing lesson
Whether you’re 10, 30, or 60 it’s time to catch the stoke. Take a private or group lesson (both are offered on the island) and finally feel what it’s like to catch a wave. Everything you need to begin is provided, too. Easy!

OU’LL FIND HULA RESTAURANT on the Boardwalk at the end of the Colony Walk. The Colony Walk is a sort of mini-Boardwalk between 9th and 10th. As for why you should go... because Chef Dave Rihl’s cuisine is based on the Hawaiian plate-lunch concept – basically a protein, salad and rice. Dave perfected this technique during a stint with a lunch wagon on Oahu’s North Shore in the 1990s and it is one of the best meals on the island. One bite of the homemade tropical vinaigrette or sweet huli sauce and you’ll be glad Dave found his way back to the Jersey Shore. Dave and his crew prepare dishes using only the best ingredients (you’ll taste this immediately) and served with perfectly cooked rice and a salad – not your everyday Boardwalk fare. Dave’s recipe of fresh seafood and produce, mixed with a dash of Hawaiian flair, makes this restaurant something special. The staff is charming bunch who bring your plates out hot and fast.

HE CREW BEHIND FRANKIE’S on the Bay is originally from Hazleton, PA, a coal-mining town in the northeast section of the state with a quirky attitude and a huge portion of pride. You’ll notice that pride when you walk in the doors. The place is clean and bright and you’re always greeted with a smiling face. Smiling faces are all well and good, but it’s when you dig into their hearty menu that you’ll get a sense of this outsized pride. Start your morning with a Brakeman Favorite (a brakeman you might have guessed, helped stop the train carrying the coal). Try a Classic Eggs Benedict. Or get adventurous (like the Moravian missionaries that settled Hazleton) with a Crabby Frankie Benedict, a Coal Dust Benedict, a Holy Cannoli, or a Chunky Monkey. Wondering what’s in all these yummy-sounding items? Stop in and find out for yourself. And don’t forget their own-brew coffee – Heroes Brew. Heroes is a gourmet coffee line that is the exclusive coffee at Frankie’s. Heroes Brew is another way to salute America’s heroes one cup at a time.

RANKIE’S ON THE BAY is located at the corner of 11th and Bay. Any restaurant that has an item named the “Explosive Burger” should definitely be on your list for a visit. The Explosive Burger is named after the practice of dynamiting for coal in the Coal Region of Northeast Pennsylvania. The owners of this cool little joint are originally from Hazleton, PA, where coal is king, and they brought that heritage them with them when they opened this restaurant a couple years back. It’s not the surfboards and seashells you’re used to, but it’s still a darn tasty eatery. You need to try this family-friendly restaurant serving pasta, burgers, lasagna, homemade soups, salads, and a variety of special entrées. Big groups welcome. Catering and take out available. ILLY’S FRENCH FRY FACTORY is on the Boards between 10th and 11th streets. JiLLy’s fries have been called “the best fries on the Boardwalk... hands down.” When you think of Ocean City, what do you think of? You think of fun, sun, sand... and JiLLy’s fries. Am I right? Of course I am. JiLLy’s fries are an Ocean City tradition and no trip to the Boardwalk would be complete without a big bucket of JiLLy’s french fries. And as you’re driving home after another fabulous trip to Ocean City, you’ll talk about the great bodysurfing, the cute lifeguards, and, of course, the bucket of JiLLy’s fries that you shared. ENNIE’S BREAD AND ITALIAN MARKET reminds me of something you’d see in a “Rocky” movie; a true Italian market similar to what you’d find in Philadelphia or New York. Located on the corner of 12th and Asbury, Bennie’s is filled with so many delicious and authentic flavors, you may find yourself running up the steps of City Hall when you’re done eating with a Bill Conti song playing in your earbuds. The menu is expansive (and delicious) but, this is not a sit-down restaurant (there’s no waitress service, but there are several tables where you can eat on site). Whether you take the eggplant or chicken cutlets home or eat your pizza with prosciutto there, it will likely be some of the best Italian food you’ve tasted. Bennie’s menu includes daily focaccias, stuffed breads, tomato pie, sandwiches, soups, salads, meatballs, olive oils, and more. They cater too, so this Night in Venice order up a tray of eggplant parm, lasagna, and sandwiches. And don’t forget that Bennie’s has a great selection of dolces to finish your meal including cannoli, muffins, cookies, tiramisu and more. Try the filled shortbread cookies, you’ll thank us later.

F YOU’VE NEVER EATEN AT CURLY’S FRIES then shame shame we know your name. These little pillows of carb heaven fried to pure golden goodness are just what your wandering soul is craving. They say “have fries, will travel,” after all. When you have a bucket of Curly’s Fries piled high, you’ll feel lighter than air and you won’t so much walk as you will glide down the Boardwalk. And gliding is even easier with that little holster for your cheese or ketchup. Not to say we’re taking sides in the condiment face off, but the whizzy cheese should really should sit side saddle on your bucket. It’s one of the few things that can truly elevate these fries. They are that good. Curly’s Fries has been an Ocean City Boardwalk tradition since the Lake Brothers landed at Peck’s Beach. Well, maybe not that long, but Curly’s Fries are an integral part of your Ocean City fun. Whether it’s the fries, the funnel cake, or the deep-fried Oreos, there’s something for everyone here. Did we mention the fries? They are fresh cut right at the store and fried up right in front of you. There’s fresh-squeezed lemonade, too. Sweet!

J’S CORNER GRILL IS ON THE CORNER of New York Avenue and Shore Road in Somers Point. From the outside, this unassuming little eatery looks quite humble; it reminds me of a corner deli where everybody knows your name. But once inside you’ll notice the magic begin to unfold. Christian Raucci is a trained chef, a graduate of Johnson and Wales University in Providence, RI, and somebody who likes to keep the menu up-to-date. Christian, along with business partner Joe Koch opened the place in 2003. Restaurants come and go in this area and only the good ones stick. So if these guys have been around for 14 years, that’s saying something. And while a good breakfast is good, a CJ’s breakfast is a meal you’ll remember. Christian and Joe are keen on using really fresh ingredients, so if a dish calls for apples, they slice the apples fresh for each order. You won’t find any canned apples in this place. Oh yes, you really need to give the place a try, you’ll be hooked. These guys are some serious foodies. Open Monday through Saturday from 7am to 4pm and Sunday 7am to 3pm.

F YOU HAPPEN TO PASS BY either one of the two Johnny B Goode Ice Cream Parlors on any given summer night, chances are you’ll see karaoke contestants belting out a tune, kids dancing, a sock hop, or a magic show. These are seriously rockin’ ice cream parlors. It’s not just the Family Entertainment Nights that set Johnny B Goode apart from other ice cream shops, it’s the quality of ingredients you’ll find there including the fresh baked waffles. That’s right, when you order waffles and ice cream at JBG, the waffle is made right then and there. How’s that for fresh, Daddy-O? Johnny B Goode serves up the freshest, creamiest, dreamiest ice creams (including some homemade flavors). Choose from malts, shakes, cones, and sundaes. There are hot and cold coffee and espresso beverages, too. The sundaes will make you go ape and freshfruit smoothies will make you flip. Two locations... 14th and Asbury; 34th and West (next to Hoy’s).

AST SIDE OF ASBURY AVENUE between 6th and 7th streets, is where you’ll find this special little eatery. And it’s bigger this year! This cozy happy bistro has garnered a big following in town thanks to a core menu of healthy, creative dishes and an atmosphere that’s warm and welcoming. With so many customers flocking in, they’ve opened a dining room on the second floor with a new kitchen, hardwood floors, wooden tables, a brick fireplace, and an oak coffee bar featuring a vintage espresso machine, all decked out in a rustic red and yellow color scheme. But the thing that made them famous in the first place remains; classic dishes with creative flair. From a quick cup o’ joe, to full breakfasts, tasty lunch sandwiches and inventive dinners, there’s something here for everyone. There are also weekly specials that change with the seasons. In summertime, there are sidewalk tables that are charming and delightful. This place is a gem.

NE OF THE ISLAND’S BEST-KNOWN EATERIES gets some new digs this year as Manco and Manco’s flagship 9th Street store moves a halfblock north for 2017. The new restaurant will be located in the old Strand movie theater at the corner of 9th and Boardwalk and will replace the current location that sits a few stores south. But the pizza remains as good as it’s ever been. For over six decades the Manco family has served the thin, crispy pizza pie that makes your mouth water just thinking about it. This is legendary pizza with a tangy, fresh sauce, quality cheese served piping hot with a taste that will stick in your memory like a warm summer breeze. The aroma as you walk down the Boardwalk will make you think it’s time for a slice no matter the time of day. And it’s always entertaining to watch as the pieman shapes and tosses the secret-recipe dough before sliding it into the rotating oven. It’s a show! Even the traditional sequence of ingredients is different – at Manco and Manco it’s cheese THEN sauce. Luckily for all of us, there are still three locations on the Boards; 8th, 9th and 12th streets.

HERE’S A LITTLE BUSINESS STRIP at the corner of 11th and Haven. Red’s is in there, all the way on the left. One of the best reasons to go here (besides the awesome food) is the friendly staff and customers – this is a reflection on the owner, David “Reds” Bridgens, an always-friendly kinda guy. This great little restaurant has earned its rightful place in the hearts (and stomachs) of Ocean City diners. Wanna know why? Honey Chipotle Grilled Shrimp, Chile Rellenos, and Carne Asada Tacos. All prepared with fresh ingredients and a lot of love. The portions are generous, the Jersey-Mex taste is amazing and the staff is helpful and cute. Try the fish tacos, breakfast burritos, Jersey-fresh salads, Red’s super burrito, spiced chicken mexi tacos (a favorite), and the famous fried ice cream! Yum! This place is perfect for a post surf-session meal or a pre-Boardwalk feast. Open year round (mostly). Try one of Red’s homemade burgers, chicken sandwiches, or crispy Jersey-Fresh salads. The meals served up at Red’s are perfect for dine in or take out. Call ‘em up, grab and go. Muy Bien.

With comfort food this tasty, you’ll definitely want to pull up a chair. The Varsity Inn has been around since most of you were kids – it’s been a must-stop for locals and visitors since 1969. A glance at the menu and it’s no surprise why. The Baked Jersey Tomato Soup is like a grilled cheese and tomato soup swirled together into a magical concoction that will make you believe in love at first bite. The pancakes are fluffy, the bacon is crispy and the cheese on the omelets is gooey. This is the criteria for amazing eats and Varsity meets them all. N ITALIAN ARIA starts playing in your head the moment you step outside of Shriver’s Salt Water Taffy, turn left and realize these confection wizards have another shop dedicated to the creamy, dreamy Italian gelato. It’s a high note, indicative of something amazing, and something amazing is happening at Shriver’s Gelato. This is some of the best gelato you’ll ever have. Now, if you’re left wondering just what gelato is, we’ve got answers for you. Gelato is a yummy treat that was born in Italy. It’s similar to traditional ice cream, but it’s made with whole milk as opposed to cream so it has fewer calories. Yippee! Shriver’s also has coffee, cappuccino, or espresso to start your day, or to give you a jolt if you need one late at night. Starting last year, they also began selling warm crepes to pair with the gelato. You’ll find the traditional trio of flavors like vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate, but the nature of true Italian Gelato is to produce original flavors that aren’t typical of ice cream, such as tiramisu, mango or amaretto. It offers plenty of wide open space, almost no boat traffic and you don’t have to ride in a circle like in those other rental spots. After your ride, sunbathe on the private beach, get a bite from the Snack Shack or rest under a shade tree. At the end of the day, grab a hot shower and freshen up in the changing rooms. Beesley’s Point Sea-Doo is also a full service Sea-Doo dealer. They offer Sea-Doo’s full line of watercraft and their technicians have a combined 100 years of experience. If you’re a watercraft or sportboat owner, you can trust them for all your storage needs. Whether it’s summer, winter or year-round rack storage, they aim to please. Pick up and delivery services available, too.
