62 OC Beach Guide

On the Cover Andy Warhol's Marilyn Monroe was the inspiration for our August cover. Ginny Mulford captured the color and spirit and gave it an OC twist by using ice cream cones.

From the Editor Back when I was a kid, the first of August would send me into a bit of a tailspin. To me,

it was the first signal that those long summer days and nights that seemed like they would never end, were numbered. That summer, the three months I longed for all year long, to lay on grass, read until the sun went down, and simply play till I couldn’t play no more, was 31 days away from being over. August leads to September and that meant instead of being the master of my own time and space, I had a schedule to uphold. Now as an adult, I still get a bit sappy when the calendar says “1 August.” But I’ve learned to appreciate August and its deep greens, super hot temps, and warm oceans. Life is a beach and August is arguably its prime. To take full advantage of these crazy days of summer, we sent out our intrepid reporter Tina Notaro to spend a day in OC having the most fun she could possibly eek out. See her story on page 54. This month we also highlight that all American snack with the European name – French Fries. We sampled baskets from Grilled Cheese and Crabcake Company and the Sandwich Bar. See how they stacked up and send us your opinion. Food is art and art is subjective, which is one of my favorite things about it. It’s a highlight each month for me to be able to feature local artists. I found this month’s Matter of Art subject when I happened to spot an adorable repurposed children's play table at Cap’n Scrap Antiques and had to know more about the artist who created it. According to Andy Warhol (the artist who inspired our cover this month), “Art is anything you can get away with.” Art is everywhere – in a person’s smile, in a red plastic basket of fries, or in a little play desk. Even the beautiful beguiling month of August, whose long days are fleeting, is a testament to the beauty of art in nature. Enjoy these long crazy days of summer my friends,

FACEBOOK FAN OF THE MONTH Anne Martin-Myers My perfect day in Ocean City starts when my husband George and I arrive around 6:30am, head up to the boards and stroll along window shopping all the stores before they open with nothing but the company of the beautiful sound of the ocean and the laughter of the sea gulls. Once the bike rentals open we ride along the boards and if we're feeling ambitious we'll ride to the top of the bridge on 9th Street. That's a challenge, but the reward of the beautiful views is worth it. After our bike ride, we head to Cafe Beach Club on the Boardwalk and sit outside. I order my favorite meal – the french toast with warm syrup and a side of crispy bacon and a glass of ice cold water. My husband's favorite is the jumbo lump crab meat omelette, potatoes with onions, white toast with black berry jelly. Afterward, we walk down to Asbury Avenue and visit Sting Ray, B & B, Youngs Ltd, Hoy's 5 & 10, and Stainton's. You can't go wrong on the avenue! After some shopping we head back to our favorite motel, The Ocean Front, and get ready to go to the beach for some fun, sun and relaxation. My husband and I enjoy walking along the beach looking for shells while dipping our feet in the ocean as we walk along. Next we go to dinner at Clancy's By The Sea where I usually get french onion soup and a pulled pork sandwich and my husband enjoys the Ocean City chowder and the crab wrap. After dinner we take a walk to Wonderland Pier and enjoy the rides and then work our way back down the Boardwalk and visit Henry's Landmark Jewelers, Fudge Kitchen, Shriver's, Ocean Treasures, All Campus (where my husband gets his fix of Seahawks hats), Surf Mall, Mia's Christmas Gallery and Air Circus. We top our night off by getting our favorite treat at Kohr Brothers – the vanilla/chocolate twist with jimmies and the peanut butter. I've been coming to Ocean City since I was six and I still enjoy it just as much if not more. My husband and I hope to retire here some day.

Frank and Alec Palmieri Chefs/Owners of Ike’s Famous Crabcakes

“Between the music and the vibe in here, I think it’s really inviting”

T

WO HANDSOME young men stand before me holding plates of hot sandwiches and fresh chips. Their names are Frank and Alec Palmieri, and these brothers are cooking up some of the best crabcakes in Ocean City. Since 2013, the pair have owned Ike’s Famous Crabcakes at 13th and Boardwalk,

just beneath Medieval Minigolf. Inside the walls are filled with framed photos of fishing trips and loved ones. My favorite Young the Giant song is playing over the stereo as I make my way to the kitchen. It’s time to make some crabcakes! OC mag: Tell me how you make your famous crabcakes. Frank: We take 13 pounds of super

lump crabmeat and about 12 pounds of claw meat. We mix that up with a wet mix of eggs, mayonnaise, old bay, parsley, and onions. And we just pat them out from there. Really simple recipe. OC mag: I read that you still use Ike’s original recipes, is that right? Frank: Yes, we still use all of Ike’s recipes. All of our seafood we hand-cut and handbread as always.

come with an order? That’s basically a whole potato!

OC mag: How did you come to own the business? Frank: Well, I started cooking here ten years ago. And I got close with Ike’s sister. When Ike passed away a few years ago, she wanted to sell it to somebody that she knew would take care of it.

Frank: Yeah, just a little bit more than one. Basically every meal comes with a pile of chips and our homemade coleslaw.

OC mag: Wow, and now you have a second location? Frank: This is the original, and then we opened the one on 8th Street last season. This is our third season here, and the second there.

With such great food and laid-back atmosphere, Ike’s is definitely a perfect spot to grab some lunch

At this point Frank had already thrown a crabcake onto the flat grill. In the meantime, he prepares a plate. Every dinner at Ike’s comes with a generous serving of their homemade chips. Using a power drill, each potato is cut into their signature spiral style just before getting dropped in the fryer.

When the crab cake is done, Frank places it on a hamburger bun and tops it with coleslaw.

OC mag: That’s how many chips

OC mag: Was that spicy ketchup you

put on the bun? Frank: It’s sriracha sauce. That’s what we call a Crabcake Royale. It has homemade coleslaw and sriracha. Any sandwich can go that way, but our two most popular are the Crabcake and Fried Grouper Royale. Alec threw some grouper into the fryer while his brother prepared the first Royale sandwich. The fish cooks to a perfect golden brown before being pulled out. While Alec makes the Fried Grouper Royale, Frank tells me more about Ike’s. Frank: This is the 25th season Ike’s has been on the boardwalk. 1990 was the first year. OC mag: It’s kinda become a landmark hasn’t it? Frank: Definitely, I think so. OC mag: Do you have plans to keep adding locations? Frank: Yeah! We kinda jumped into

second season (laughs). We want to open more stores in other cities, we just don’t know where or when yet. Wanna make some tacos?

With three mouthwatering choices before me, I go with the obvious first choice and take the Crabcake Royale for a taste test. Along with some of Ike’s sweet iced fruit tea (totally yummy), I completely devour the sandwich and most of the chips. The crabcake was awesome and the balance of spicy sriracha and creamy coleslaw was especially delicious. Talking to waitress Meredith Patterson, she tells me how “there’s not really a lot of places that you can come to with big picnic tables that are family friendly.” The dining room in Ike’s has plenty of space for large parties. “Between the music and the vibe in here I think it’s really inviting,” Meredith said. And she is so right. With such great food and laid-back atmosphere, Ike’s is definitely a perfect spot to grab some lunch this summer. Stop in and see for yourself!

OC mag: Definitely! Frank tosses a fresh piece of fish onto the grill and sprinkles it with cajun seasoning. Two tortilla shells are also thrown on to be toasted. OC mag: What kind of fish is that? Frank: More grouper. We use that in our grilled tacos, and in our fried tacos we use cod. When the fish is ready, Frank tucks each piece into a tortilla shell and tops it with all the fixin’s – lettuce, homemade sweet salsa, a creamy pink sauce and a sprinkle of red cabbage. Frank: We have four homemade sauces. Our cocktail sauce, creamy horseradish, sun dried tomato tartar and then this is our sweet roasted red

Battle of the Fries

Total Fry Annihilation

Impressive Flavor and Texture

Good French fries are hard to find. That’s how that saying goes, no? Perhaps because they're ubiquitous and sometimes treated like an afterthought… “Do you want fries with that?” those little potato pieces do not always pass the test. But the sriracha fries at Sandwich Bar? These soar to the top. They received the ultimate compliment from me and my crew – there were absolutely none left in the red plastic basket when we were through with them. Total fry annihilation. Even those little crunchy bits at the bottom were gobbled up. It’s not hard to see why. First – Sandwich Bar’s menu is simple, straight up delish combinations of quality ingredients and

Crabby Bacon French Fries. Let that sink in. Fries with crab bacon soup poured over them. Sublime. So I walked into the Grilled Cheese and Crabcake Co. (not far from the northbound entrance to the GSP) and asked for their best fries. "Crabby Bacon French Fries" was the answer I got. These were out of bounds! I was impressed with the flavor and texture. The fries came out nicely done – is there anything worse than underdone fries? And then there was the crab soup that gets poured on top (I know! Crazy, right?). GC&CC makes a good crab soup (I’ve had it before) and the idea of pouring it over french

She Said includes the restaurant’s philosophy of making real food from scratch(!). Second: The fries are hand cut and twicecooked in peanut oil, loaded into a basket and served up with a semi-spicy sriracha mayo. If you’ve wanted to taste this trendo condimento, this is your shot… it’s a kick without a punch in the face. The dip (though not cheese) was creamy and a perfect accoutrement. Everything about Sandwich Bar was thoughtful... when we needed it, we were given an extra sriracha without question. It's little things like that that make us say, "Oui!" and make us keep coming back for more.

Sandwich Bar 3225 Asbury, Ocean City

He Said fries? Genius. Guy Fieri from Food Network’s “Diners, Drive in and Dives” did a show from this place last year and praised chef Steve Novak ability to create new taste combos. The soup had a nice thick texture with a fine flavor. I was afraid the fries might get soggy with the thick combo of soup and bacon on them, but no! The fries held up nicely under the strain. I might describe these fries as “off the hook,” but I don’t want Guy Fieri mad at me, so I’ll just say they were off the chain! Hands off the backwards Ray Bans dude!

OVES BEACH GRILL The Fantastic Five go from beach to table before you can say "Iron Man!"

W

E DIDN’T even bother to shower after the beach. We went straight to Oves Beach Grill, still sandy and sunburned and we had a famous time. Ocean City truly has great beaches. It could be argued that I’m a bit biased but I’ve been to a lot of beaches and Ocean City’s are hard to beat. Super clean soft sand, plenty of space, a dedicated beach patrol and other likeminded and mellow beach goers makes Ocean City a great place to relax. And when you’re done, you can go straight to a beach-front restaurant and enjoy some good fare without even rinsing (personally I like to wait on the shower, I think the salt water does good things for my skin). Oves restaurant, located at 4th and the Boardwalk, was up to the challenge as we strolled in and we’re not a crew you want to see

strolling your way – rambunctious, animated, sandy and hungry – that’s us. The full crew was assembled for this mission; Captain Steve Rogers, Dr. David Banner (don’t make him angry), Russian-spy-turned-All-Americangirl Natasha Romanoff, my trusted companion Pepper Potts, and myself, Tony Stark. No dangerous mission for us this time, just some sand between the toes and a hankerin’ for seafood. We arrived early at Oves, around 5:30pm and had no trouble getting a table. Our hostess was very nice and we were promptly greeted by our server Sean who did a superb job the entire time – not too gushy, not overly attentive – just spot on. I’m a sucker

for good service, it just makes a meal so much more enjoyable. I loved the oyster crackers and horseradish on the table, it gave the kids – I mean the crew – something to nibble on while we waited for our entrees. Sean soon arrived with some fresh, soft rolls. We’re not talking rocket science here, just a simple meal presented well. Ocean City is all about comfort food. The places that last in the OC give visitors just what they want and Oves delivers big portions with good taste at a reasonable price. Oves has been open every summer since 1970 so they must be doing something right. Can I find a more diverse menu elsewhere? Sure, but Oves sticks with what works and it makes for a pleasant experience. Plus the views are awesome. We had a nice breeze and a great view of the ocean. As we were waiting (we didn’t wait long) a young guy started

playing guitar in the corner. I thought he was groovy daddy-o. He played some old-school classics including Neil Young, the Eagles and a distinguished version of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Mrs. Robinson.” Coo coo ca-choo Mrs. Robinson. We were nervous when we saw this musician setting up. The last thing we wanted was to be blown out by an overenthusiastic flat top picker. But at one point Sean even checked in to make sure the guitar player wasn’t too loud. That simple act floored me. I’ve been in plenty of restaurants with guitars and music and that was the first time anyone ever checked to see if the volume was ok (actually it was just right). The entire experience was relaxed and casual. Remember we hadn’t even rinsed from the beach. I still had half-a-pound of sand in my hair and in my shorts. And still we had a truly enjoyable experience. The vibe was unhurried, the food was presented at the proper temperature, the service was friendly and the music was jammin’. What more could one ask? Pepper ordered the chicken parm

which was a large portion and had good taste. Pepper also got onion rings and Jersey corn on the cob with her meal. Pepper simply raved about the corn saying it was “fantastic.” “This was a big juicy ear of Jersey corn and I really liked it,” she said Oves is comfort food and the menu hasn’t changed much in the past few years. The fare is basic but we truly enjoyed ourselves. The tables are wooden, and the seats are plastic, but we didn’t mind. Oves was just what the doctor ordered. The specials were swordfish and stuffed shrimp (tempting) but I opted for the crabcake, which, it turned out, was big! I got a side of coleslaw (very good), apple sauce and corn (I think I was only due two but whatever). Sean gave me a side of cocktail sauce and I cleaned the plate. Lots of crab in there with a fine texture and a simple taste. There’s something about eating by the ocean that makes me want seafood and this meal really scratched that itch. As usual Steve Rogers ordered some red pasta which he mostly ate (he shared a bunch with Natasha) and David Banner got his usual chicken

fingers which I thought were pretty tasty. David is a man of few words but there wasn’t much of his meal left when we left so that says a lot. Natasha ordered the grilled cheese which was sufficient for her needs – she ate the whole thing - plus some of the captain’s pasta and a little of my apple sauce. She fell asleep pretty quickly after that feast. Oves does breakfast, lunch and dinner. They’re known for their homemade apple cinnamon donuts but it was dinner time and they stopped making the donuts at 11am. But I’ve had those donuts and they’re really good. Perfect to fuel an early morning bike ride or mission to stop Ultron. Oves does not accept reservations and they only accept cash so plan ahead for both of those details. Personally I like to eat early before everyone else on the island heads out (Shower? Who needs a shower for dinner? You can shower later). Plus when you eat early there’s room later for Ocean City’s other food group… dessert. We’ll return. I think I’ll try the stuffed shrimp next time. Until we meet again, eat hearty America!

ADORABLE CREATURE OF THE MONTH Least Tern

Photographed by Ray Zaleski

It looks like our photographer caught this least tern doing yoga on the beach. Perhaps it’s called “Beak Pose.” The smallest of American Terns, the Least Tern is found nesting on sandy beaches along the southern coasts of the United States and up the major river systems far into the interior of the continent. During breeding, the least tern has a black cap ending at white forehead. Additional descriptive details include: short white eyestripe, yellow bill with black tip, light gray back, white underside, and black leading edge to wing. In nonbreeding, plumage has black eyestripe extending to back of head, white top of head, and black bill. – allaboutbirds.org.

years.

How long have you worked here? Three

Favorite coffee to make/drink? I love making cappuccinos and my favorite drink would be the Americano. Coolest place you’ve ever traveled to? Once I worked with a photographer in the northern mountains in Washington for a month. I learned how to use an old fashioned view camera and took black and white landscape photos in an ice cave. Something you’ve always wanted to try but have been too scared to? Kite surfing looks pretty awesome, also scuba diving. If you could have any super power, what would you have? Definitely the ability to breath underwater, it would make diving so much safer. 22 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE

AUGUST 2015

Marc Impagliazzo from LOCal Gym & Fitness How long have you worked at the gym? About three years. What is your second favorite movie? Definitely Anchorman. What’s your dream vacation? Hawaii, it would be so cool to surf there. If you could be any superhero who would it be? Superman, he’s the coolest superhero there is.

Cailin Callahan owner of Golden Buddha Yoga Coolest place you’ve ever traveled to? I ran a retreat in Morocco in March. It was incredible. We did yoga in the mornings and evenings, and explored all throughout Morocco. We went to the Atlas Mountains, the beach and even rode camels. If you could trade lives with anyone who would it be? No one, I love my life.

Favorite pizza place? I love Manco & Manco’s pepperoni pie.

Second fave movie? Twilight (please don’t judge me). I love it, it’s my guilty pleasure.

Last concert you’ve attended? Zac Brown Band, it was an awesome concert. They’re my favorite band.

How did you get into yoga? A doctor recommended me to try yoga after I suffered some health issues when I was 20.

6 Are you a native of Ocean City? Yes, my grandmother lived here when I was a kid, and I came down to visit all the time. I lived in Bucks County, PA, and bought a summer home in ’86, then moved here year round in ’89. I’ve always been in sales, selling paper products; at that time I was the regional vice president of sales and I flew pretty much every week, so it didn’t matter where I lived as long as I could get to an airport. But there was always a certain fear that [in Ocean City] in the winter there was nothing to do; but I’ve found there’s more to do here than any place I’ve ever lived. What role do you play for Ocean City? I was actually just elected president of the City Council on July 1. The council basically votes on how the money is spent and on ordinances. We are also advocates for the public. A lot of people will call their council person if they have an issue or a problem, and we bring it to the administration. My number one advocacy is for veterans. I got involved with veterans activities through my father, who fought in WWII and in Korea. Realizing I didn’t serve makes me have more respect for guys who did. How did you acquire that position? I was first elected in 2006, so I have been on the council for nine years. You do it because you want to make the right decisions for the taxpayer, that’s your primary responsibility. The more fun responsibility is getting to help people. I was president in 2007, so this time I knew what to expect. You’re more involved in the day-to-day operations of the council and the administration. But everybody is equal on the council, so when you’re president, its just a different role. You’re a liaison between the council and the administration

Questions

for Keith Hartzell, President of the City Council by Victoria Cleveland

What does your schedule as president of City Council usually look like? We have a meeting the second and fourth Thursday of the month. On occasion, we have workshops when we think or the public thinks that it is necessary to discuss an important issue going on. It gives the public a better chance to communicate with us. What is the best part about working for the City of Ocean City? The best part of being on the council is having the pride of working for the people who live in Ocean City. We represent the taxpayer and we make sure that they get the best value for their money. I just want to be 100 percent accessible. If there is a zoning issue in a neighborhood, I go door to door. I don’t care if they are renters, second home owners, or live there year round, they all pay taxes, so I go talk to people about what’s going on in their neighborhood. My favorite story is that I knocked on Chuck Betson’s door (who is on WOND- AM 1400 radio) about eight years ago, and we became instant friends. Now I am on WOND radio with him on Friday nights. That all came from knocking on his door. What is your favorite part about living in Ocean City? This town has given me the best possible life I could have. I love the Downtown; I like being able to walk everywhere. In fact I had a condominium on the beach, then I moved downtown, and I like it better down here. I could never envision living anywhere else. It’s awesome being a representative of a place you absolutely love. That doesn’t mean things can’t be better, but it’s a great place as it is, and that’s a blessing. - Photo by Macy Oteri

Local Ocean It’s History

VICTORY Over Polio “Resort Lifeguard Is Laid Low by Paralysis” was the front page headline in the June 10, 1941 Ocean City Sentinel-Ledger. The following was printed under Karl Scott’s picture: “Infantile paralysis has laid low a veteran Ocean City lifeguard, Karl Scott, shown here in a picture taken last summer, his fourth on the Beach Patrol.”

30 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE

AUGUST 2015

By Fred Miller

T

HE ARTICLE reported, “Scott, known to hundreds for his work on the 17th Street beach, was stricken with the dread disease about five weeks ago and had been confined at the University of Pennsylvania hospital most of the time since, until he was taken home last week. “The guard climaxed his local beach career last year by being chosen as one of the 10 members of the uniformed color guard which raised and lowered the flag at the Music Pier.” The article ended encouraging support for the polio stricken lifeguard: “Captain Jack G. Jernee, head of the Beach Patrol, is urging Scott’s friends to help cheer him up by remembrance cards or personal visits.” With one of their own contracting polio, the lifeguards joined the March of Dimes, an organization founded by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938 as a response to an epidemic of polio in the United States. Lifeguards, led by Fenton Carey and Jack Mintzer, began raising money and giving it to the March of Dimes for polio research and to aid victims of the disease. Water shows at the Flanders were the main fundraising venue. “Donate and Receive a Pin” was on posters at the Flanders. Thomas A. Williams became captain of the OCBP in 1942 and continued the patrol’s fight against polio.

Polio cases peaked in 1952 with 57,879 cases being reported in the United States. Finally, in 1954 a vaccine, developed by Dr. Jonas Salk at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, was being tested in a few cities including Ocean City. “71 Children Calmly Take 1st Polio Vaccine Shots” was the front page headline in the April 29, 1954 Ocean City Sentinel-Ledger. A year later good news about the trial tests was reported on the front page of The New York Times on April 13, 1955:

“SALK POLIO VACCINE PROVES SUCCESS; MILLIONS WILL BE IMMUNIZED SOON; CITY SCHOOLS BEGIN SHOTS APRIL 25.”

A similar headline was in the April 14, 1955 Ocean City Sentinel-Ledger: “Expect Polio Vaccine to be Given Next Week.” By 1961, just six years after the vaccine was introduced nationwide, the number of reported polio cases was 1,312—a 98 percent reduction from 1952. Today the figure is near zero. Members of the Ocean City Beach Patrol believed they were being thanked when a commemorative stamp was released in 1957 honoring those who helped fight polio. A commemorative stamp honoring Dr. Jonas Salk was released on May 26, 1999.

MATTER OF ART

By Tina Notaro

W

HILE MANY of us may be familiar with the stark difference between Pinterestproject expectations versus reality, Cheryl Weigel has transcended the realm of average DIYer. In 2014, Cheryl and her daughter Ella founded Relish Design, a re-purposed home décor shop located inside Capt. Scrap’s Attic in Seaville. Inside the pleasantly musty walls of this beloved antique store lies a sea of intrigue; 1950’s Pyrex, a Goebel Friar Tuck Mug, even a mounted goat head. Amongst these curios and forgotten relics, Relish Design has claimed its space. You will find Cheryl’s one-of-a-kind furnishings in a room along the front windows. With milk paint and a touch of whimsy, she is able to bring new life to that which is destined for dust. Before establishing Relish, Cheryl was a stay/work-at-home mom who needed a creative outlet. Inspired by Pinterest and the HGTV’s series Fixer Upper, she began repurposing her local yard sale finds. Starting with projects for her home, Cheryl quickly fell in love with the DIY process. Encouraged by family and friends, she began selling her wares as Relish Design, with Ella acting as Social Media Marketer. “She is also my sounding board for new ideas, color choices and pricing of items. Ella makes sure I don’t get stuck on certain things and inspires me to keep creating,” Cheryl said of working with her 14-year-old daughter. Ella, whose favorite part is going to the sales, said the whole process is very time consuming. Knowing what can be found regularly compared to more rare pieces is a knack the two have developed over time. “I probably used to buy too much. I’ve calmed down a lot and gotten more picky,” Cheryl remarked on her purchases. Salvage finds such as two antique church pews or a Victorian bed frame are a delight, as she can either gently restore or totally transform them. Her first attempt with woodworking was converting the frame’s headboard into a rustic bench. And the pews, after a delicate and

thorough cleaning, became a unique way to add an architectural element to any space. In addition to her restorations, Cheryl also uses found objects to create re-purposed décor. After having hardscape delivered to her home, she was inspired by the metal straps holding stone pallets together. “I thought, “Oh my gosh, we could make garden spheres!” Cheryl then experimented with a rivet gun to secure the ties into a charming set of garden sculptures. “It’s trial and error, but it’s important to not be afraid of stuff,” she said of using new tools. Driven by her creative vision, Cheryl is always finding new ways to revitalize discarded objects. The design duo will often scour local estate sales to find interesting and usable items. While each object may not have a present need, they are able to store their finds in the garage. “Thankfully I have a very understanding, supportive husband,” Cheryl expressed gratefully. With a smirk, she described how Relish projects can easily take up an entire room. Recently, she moved the design operation to their shed, in hopes of eventually acquiring a bigger space. Working on up to five pieces at a time, it is important to have room for each project. “It’s a little chaotic, but it’s the way to do it, otherwise you wouldn’t get much done,” she explained. Seeing her finished pieces makes it easy to appreciate the work Cheryl puts into restoring these forgotten treasures. For her, every piece that sells is just as exciting as the first. It is absolutely worth the trip to see Cheryl’s creations as well as the other wonderful vendors at Capt. Scrap’s Attic. You will definitely find something perfectly unique to add to your home. You can find both Relish Design and Capt. Scraps Attic on Facebook for more information.

TRENDS GRASSROOTS

H

OW DOES a man who built internet-controlled research telescopes in Philadelphia become the owner of the only music store in Ocean City? All it takes is enthusiasm and a strong background in computers if you’re Chris Leibrandt. “I’ve always been a music enthusiast, and with computer and internet expertise, I was able to bring product online,” said the Grassroots Music Store owner. “Over the years, I’ve built it up so we’re quite busy with internet sales year round.” Grassroots is more than internet sales, it’s a downhome shop on Asbury Avenue. Ocean City runs through Chris’ veins; his island connection spans generations. “My family has been in Ocean City back to my great grandparents. I had the opportunity to purchase a family house, so i left my position in Philadelphia and moved to OC.” Grassroots has been in business for about 12 years and is one of the only music shops on the Jersey Shore. Perhaps because Chris is a music shop owner and a self proclaimed music enthusiant, he didn’t hesistate at all when asked what the trends are in music these days. “Guitar music is back. Like in the ‘80s and ‘90s there was a lot of Electronic Dance Music. Tha’ts made a come back too recently, but guitar music bands like Mumford and Sons, very string-instrument-oriented music is trending right now. It piques people’s interest and they want to be rock stars and that leads to strong trends in guitar sales,” said Chris. Another big deal trend is a small instrument - the ukelele. “Ukeles are a huge trend. I just got a shipment in yesterday - like 50 or 60. A day doesn’t go by where

we don’t sell one or two ukeles. All price ranges too,” said Chris. You’ve probably heard the Israel Kamakawiwo’ole version of Over the Rainbow. In it, he’s playing the Ukelele. And he’s not the only one. “You see McCartney do something on a ukelele and you want a ukelele. Right now, we have 40 ukeles on the wall. We’re like ukelele central.

More than instruments and records, listen to live music on the Grassroots Stage! Mary Devlin And Anna will take the stage this summer and perform from 10am-1pm every Tuesday. 44 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE

We seriously represent.” For music fans, Grassroots is like a brick paradise (by the dashboard light perhaps). There’s something for everyone, from little kids to the serious collector. “Right now I have Paul Stanley from Kiss’ signature guitar. It’s called the Ice Man. It’s got a cracked mirror finish. There’s maybe 10-12 in the country and we have one of them right on our wall. It’s something to behold. That’s part of the fun too,” said Chris. Many musicians find their way into the store to shop or just hang out and play. The store is focused on stringed instruments, including guitars, bass guitars, banjos, mandolins, and ukuleles – both used and new. Grassroots takes trades too and offers lessons year round. Just when you think Grassroots couldn’t pack anything more into its shop, you pass by the glass window and peer into the recording studio. Cue the Aerosmith guitar riff. The studio was added last year and is equipped with a brand new 16-channel

mix board and Roland electronic beat kit. Every piece of the recording can be adjusted to what the artist desires. Talking with Chris, although I had never met him before, was like chatting with an old friend. He is easy going and knows so much about the music scene, guitars, and records. He even got me thinking about taking up guitar again (after six years of not playing) and taught me the basic pattern of a blues chord progression in just under a minute. As we finished up, I asked Chris about the records he had playing on a turntable in the store. He said records were always a collector’s item, even through the ‘90s, and they are making a comeback now more than ever. “Vinyl records are analog like we are, they work on a waveform, they’re not digital,” said Chris., “So we just intuitively connect and relate to playing a record. - Text by Nikki Sammartino and Stefanie Godfrey. Car Caress

When you stop at Car Caress, you’re getting a passionate team to tend to your vehicle By Victoria Cleveland and Stefanie Godfrey. Photograph by JT Williams

O

NCE YOU’VE had your car detailed, it’s hard not to believe that some people really can conjure up magic tricks. In what seems like the blink of an eye, okay it’s really an hour or two, your car can go from being a battlefield of scattered Cheerios and GoGo Squeeze wrappers to a shiny beacon of cleanliness. Just who are the sorcerers that make this happen? One is Brian Coggins, majority owner at Car Caress on Haven Avenue in OC. Brian’s passion is cars and keeping them looking their finest. “We offer everything you need to clean your car, wax your car, and keep it looking good,” said Brian. And he should know exactly what it takes to make that mini van or SUV shine. Brian grew up in the car cleaning industry and his family has always owned a small business. Tripp and Arlene Coggins, Brian’s parents, owned Coggins Waste Management. They sold that company around 1999 and took over Car Caress, which was located next door. “When I was young, I would go to the detailing shop next door and hang out. They used to have so many cool cars, a lot of cool old ones, so I liked going there,” said Brian. After his parents bought Car Caress, he would spend his summers home from college doing detailing work there. In 2005, Brian became the manager and today he is the owner. And the business has expanded. About five years ago, the Coggins bought a second car wash in Marmora on Stagecoach Road. The corner location has a few vacuums, and several do-it-yourself car wash bays, plus an auto wash.

If you want a detail though, and believe me, you do, head for the island location. All of the detailing work that Car Caress does is done in Ocean City. Keeping the business growing is paramount to Brian. “My grandfather used to say that if you’re not growing, you’re going backwards. If you’re not trying to get bigger and better then you’re losing ground,” Brian said. One thing the Coggins family were certain of when they needed to relocate Car Caress last year – they wanted to stay in Ocean City. “We have good clientele in Ocean City. My parents had their first business here and knew a lot of people in town, so it was a pretty easy decision to stay,” said Brian. “I’ve been doing this for about ten years now. You get the same people back every year.” Car Caress gets a lot of seasonal customers, as well as local patrons, and he does a lot of work with local dealerships. Brian’s love of cars makes his work fulfilling. “I’ve always liked cars growing up. I like to work with my hands. I’m not the type to sit behind a desk,” Brian said. “When somebody drops a car off saying how dirty it is, then they come pick it up and they can’t believe how great it looks after a long stay at the beach with kids and dogs in the car... I like that. Their car looks brand new. It’s gratifying.”

>>>> Car Caress is located at 1635 Haven Avenue in Ocean City. For more information call 609-398-8482 or visit carcaress.com

ACTIVITY OF THE MONTH Parents can save their children’s intellect while the kids have fun as well.

A SUMMER OF CREATIVITY From drawing to dancing, fun awaits at the Arts Center Text and Photographs by JoHannah Newman

W

HEN PEOPLE come to Ocean City, they come to get sun kissed on the stunning shorefront, or splash through the refreshing waves. People come for the family friendly Boardwalk and famous munchies like Kohr Bros or Johnson’s Popcorn. But because they are not in school, many parents may be concerned their kids’ brains are turning to mush in the summer sun. Parents can save their children’s intellect while the kids have fun as well. This year, the 50th anniversary of the program, is the perfect year to sign up your child for a one week long Summer Art Camp at the Ocean City Arts Center. This month I got a chance to be a kid again and attend a few of these classes that turned out to be quite entertaining. I dragged myself awake on Tuesday morning and was ready for an adventure when I reached the Arts Center on my bike, thirty minutes early for the nine o’clock class I would be auditing. When I entered the cool room, a welcome contrast to the muggy day, I was offered water, and a seat immediately. The entire staff was amazingly accommodating. Cyndy Dudnick, a retired Upper Township art teacher, was more than willing to talk with me as we sat in a sunlit studio, overlooking several blocks of our fair town, a perfect view to paint. This week, her students were able

to enjoy the creative artwork of Eric Carl, and learn the skills to be able to recreate this distinct style. Kids learned how to draw animals, blend watercolors, and make a seahorse picture using collage techniques. Later in the week the kids would learn how to make prints of fish to populate their ocean landscape with more fishy friends. While watching these kids thoroughly enthralled with their seahorses and cups of sequins another teacher, Rob Gummel, popped his head into the studio and asked if I might want to stop by his class. Down the hall, Rob and nine students were building the wings to their own airplane models in the Art and Invention class. Rob chatted with me as his pupils formed their planes, each with their own creative flare. Throughout the week, the kids would be put into groups to work together and build their own catapults. Their designs and final inventions would be judged on aesthetic, durability and an accurate shot. This class is built for a child willing to invent and make great things with their imagination, and Rob is certainly an entertaining Jack of all trades, teaching 11 different classes this summer. The Arts Center is also blessed with a dance studio and a music room, along with its several art studios. One morning, I found these two bottles of blonde sunshine that were

at the Arts Center to attend a dance class with their teacher Mrs. Brooke. These girls were vacationing from Florida and lost no time in showing their skills to this reporter. Soon the whole class was proving to me their skill. These girls were strangers a week ago but they all seemed to be old time friends, giggling by the ballet bar or stretching on the wooden dance floors. These children had such excitement and passion for what they were doing in class that I forgot they were only six to 11 years old, and amateurs as well. The most touching part of my day was not the dancing, or the work outs or even the flare each of these stars was willing to flaunt. The most touching part of the lesson was to watch 12 girls stand in a line in front of a mirror and say one thing out loud that they liked about themselves. Brooke says it is important to her to instill positivity and confidence in her girls as those are the most important traits in a future dancer. These classes are much more than an activity to fill some hours in the morning before the family runs up to the Boardwalk. It’s more than something to keep the brain sharp because kids have spent too much time away from their schoolwork. The Arts Center Summer Programs build a community of kids who live locally or are visiting from near or far who can learn and express their creative passions together. When it was time for me to go, I was reluctant to leave. I enjoyed these classes so much that I wish I had participated in them when I was a child. 53

FUN DAY

0 matter where you want to have a good time, it’s important to remember two things; always be flexible, and expect the unexpected. Maintaining this easygoing mindset will help get you through the snags and hiccups that can happen on any trip. Keeping a cool head and an open mind will make you the Boardwalk Hero your family deserves. As for fun in Ocean City, I recently attempted to have as much of it in one day as humanly possible. Daunting, yes, but I convinced some friends to join me. Aside from some weather-related setbacks I thoroughly enjoyed my day spent in “America’s Greatest Family Resort.” Here is what I did: 7am Arrived in OC with Emily. This particular morning was rainy, so Ebb and Flow Yoga on the dock at Bay Cats was cancelled. I would have loved to start the day with some mindful stretches, but hey, que sera, sera. 8am Breakfast at Bashful Banana, 944 Boardwalk. A delicious ham and swiss omelette for myself, and the Upside Down Cereal Bowl for my Fun-Day companion. Not to mention free refills on coffee! 10am Arrived at Top Gun Parasail, 314 Bay. Capt. Cole takes us out on the boat to test the waters. It was very windy, but there was a chance we could still go up. It was cool to see OC from the ocean, where the beachgoers looked like little figurines. 10:41am Seasickness gets the best of me and I ralph over the edge of the boat. We did not get to parasail that day. 11:15am Emily and I lay in the grass beside my car to reestablish our equilibrium. I lamented over our failed parasail trip, but was certain it would 56 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE

not ruin my day. A tip for motion-sick adventurers – take some Dramamine! 12pm We head to the Boardwalk to meet Shelby, and Emily leaves for work. The two of us saunter up the boards beneath sunny skies. People watching is a wildly underrated hobby. 1:10pm Entered the Blacklight Room at the back of the Surf Mall, 1154 Boardwalk, to have our Tarot cards read by the lovely Zoe. We both got a fiveminute reading on our past, present and future. My cards said it is important to make time for myself and to use this time productively. Mystic-lover or not, a reading by Zoe is definitely a fun activity worth stopping in for. 1:50pm Pit stop at Kohr Bros. for my favorite summertime treat; soft-serve vanilla cone with rainbow sprinkles. In the warmth of the sun I had to eat that thing lickety-split. 2:10-3pm Strapped in at the Bumper Cars in Playland’s Castaway Cove, 1020 Boardwalk. There is nothing quite like cruising around at a gentle ramming speed while avoiding collision-hungry young boys. Parents and children both can enjoy one of America’s amusement pastimes. Next was GoKarts at Playland’s Seaside Speedway, 936 Boardwalk. The wind in my hair, a faint smell of gasoline – this was as close to being in Mad Max: Fury Road as I will ever get. 3:15pm I never go to the Boardwalk without stopping into Jilly’s Arcade, 1168 Boardwalk, for some ten-cent skee-ball! Save up your dimes (they have a change machine if not) and test your skill. Scores over 280 get you a free game. Twelve games later and I walked away with a high-score of 400. Can you top that?! 3:30pm Shelby and I grab a slice at Jojo’s Pizzeria, 1214 Boardwalk. A quiet, little spot to take a rest and regroup for the next activity. 4pm We convince our coworker (Let’s call him “Max Fun”) to meet us at Keepsake Old Time Photos, 658 Boardwalk. Max does not usually like pictures, but in the spirit of Maximum Fun Day he kept an open mind. The three of us decide to dress as cowboy

and cowgirls. Guns blazin’ and loot in hand, we were ready for our close up. After our photo session, we left with abs sore from laughter and two hilariously awesome pictures to show for it. Sometimes stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to very funny memories. 5:30pm A friendly match at Medieval Fantasy Miniature Golf, 1336 Boardwalk. The place is decorated with amazing 3-D blacklight artwork. Wizards, castles and knights pop from the walls in fluorescent paints, while dragon sculptures accent the course. It was a valiant effort, but in the end I was more than a few over par. 6:35pm We stopped to watch B. Magnificent the Traveling Magician perform his show. Different than the familiar musical acts scattered along the boardwalk, B. engages his audience with slight-of-hand and corny jokes. Take a break to watch a trick if you see him! 6:50pm Brief detour off the Boardwalk to hop on the Double Shot back in Castaway Cove. A quick way to get your adrenaline pumping. Remember, it goes up twice! 7pm Grabbed our bleacher seats at Carey Stadium, 6th and Atlantic, to watch the OC Nor’easters play the Trenton Rebels. The team is one of the most successful in the PDL, and their home games are a low-key way to relax and enjoy the evening. Our OC boys came away with a shutout, 4-0. 8:40pm The night was coming to a close. So I grabbed a corn dog on the walk back to my car. Sweet doggy bliss. Over 12 hours spent having fun and I hardly saw everything this island has to offer. While my “maximum fun day” was packed with activities, it does not mean a day spent on the beach would be any less enjoyable. However, if you want to do every fun thing possible, heed my advice as a Fun-Day veteran. You cannot expect things to always go according to plan. And when they don’t, stay calm and remember that fun is more a state of mind than it is a commodity. Good luck and happy summer!

SOCIAL NETWORK

Maker's Social, a new creative meeting group comes to OC Text and Photos by Tina Notaro

AUGUST 2015

Calling all creators, makers, crafters and dreamers! Your new favorite place awaits.

I

NSIDE THE brick walls of Glazed Over Studios among shelves of bisque ceramics, Beesley’s Point resident Lauren DeMarco attentively prepares the night’s favors; pocket notebooks with dainty embellishments and appropriately sized pens to match. Lauren is the host of Makers Social, a year-long project that aims to provide local artists a comfortable place to share resources, receive feedback, and spark collaborations. Whether you are a blogger, painter, cook, crafter, business owner, or creative entrepreneur (or anything in between) this is the place to be. Lauren, who has an adorable two year old and works part-time as a registered nurse, recognized the lack of a community-based network of artists in Ocean City. “I feel that there is a strong need for people who are alone in their art on a regular basis to come together as their own small community,” she explained. In addition to nursing, Lauren also runs a creative venture of her own. Lauren DeMarco Handmade sells hand-folded, 100 percent Kona Cotton hair bows, each one meticulously crafted and absolutely precious. Running her business, which she operates from a 100-square-foot office in her home, has given Lauren the unique perspective that many local artists share. “I would run into people in the grocery store and be writing things down on receipts,” Lauren laughed through a sigh. For years she had been looking for ways to share her knowledge and resources with anyone who needed it. “There’s no reason you should sit and search on Google for something when I can tell you.” Now with a captive audience and sympathetic ears, Lauren has created the incredibly supportive environment she always longed for. Makers Social is a place for artists, as its three tenets suggest, to share, collaborate, and grow. As Lauren’s guests arrived, the studio began to echo with excited chatter. A perky bunch of young, fresh-faced women mingled over introductions, each looking the part; creative, eager, fun. With Lauren’s insistence, the group was asked to place

their business cards on the table and enjoy the treats provided by local frozen yogurt shop Yoasis. The favors and treats for each event are included in the ticket price. Aware of possible hesitation to pay for her event, Lauren asserted to me that guests walk away with not only information and connections, but tangible items as well. And for every ticket sold, one dollar is allotted towards a scholarship fund that will be awarded to an Ocean City High School student with a creative entrepreneurial dream. After my visit, it was clear that a night at Makers Social is worth every penny. Now back to the treats! Big bowls of Acai Berry frozen yogurt sat next to individual cups of fresh strawberries, banana slices, coconut flakes, granola and honey. With our yummy treats in hand, we each took a seat at the big wooden table. The air was already electric when Lauren asked everyone to share a six-month chief initiative for their business. She led the discussion and described how she aims to offer bows in over a hundred colors through her online storefront. The group expressed their opinions from both the consumer and seller perspective on the pros and cons of having that many options. One by one, the topic circled the table. A photographer spoke about getting more clients, a Jamberry consultant shared her desire to set and accomplish goals, and a holistic life coach described the contrast between her day job and chasing her passion. Each aspiration was met with thoughtful critique and often a willingness to help. In only two hours, these women had made connections that would be fulfilled outside of Makers Social. Earlier in the night Lauren had described how she envisioned the year-long project. “I didn’t want it to be a meeting. I wanted it to be an event. We don’t have events for us,” she said. Somewhere between a meeting and a party, Makers Social is an event to dress up for, have a nice “instagrammable” treat, and walk away feeling exhilarated. “We kinda had to stop each other from talking more,” Lauren said of the first event.

Running on adrenaline and passion, the makers are often people with day jobs and an fiery need to express themselves. While those who have made the leap to business owner have a lot to offer newcomers, they still benefit from the perspective of makers in their early stages. Speaking as a veteran creative, Lauren mentions how “we tend to get a little cold to the reality of things and it’s nice to be around the inspiration of people who are freshly dreaming.” That dynamic is one of the reasons Makers Social is such an enriching experience. Allie Wilson, a photographer living in Northfield, put it best; “We’re all in a different line of work, but we have the same struggles.” Being able to say “I know, me too!” is something you can count on at Makers Social. Whether it is identifying your brand, navigating social media, or simply the need to be heard, there is a wealth of support and experience available. Being surrounded by such driven and creative people is truly energizing and Katie Waldow of lifestyle blog Two Hot Coffees agrees. “Being here has helped me think of new ideas and be inspired by the things others have accomplished,” Katie told me. As the night comes to a close, conversation carries until the last possible second. It is obvious that the energy of our gathering has affected each of us. Lauren has created something truly special for local creatives. A night at Makers Social is as fun as it is informative, and the people are just as interesting. As the year unfolds, I look forward to seeing the progress of all in attendance that night. As for Lauren, she announced her latest plan for Makers Social – a “blind-criticism” open house, where participants can receive honest feedback on their displays, packaging and product. Until then, Lauren will continue to partner with Glazed Over Studios to host a monthly Makers Social event. Find more information on the next event at www. makerssocialocnj.com

The Cat’s out of t he Bag

Wee Cat Fishing Charters’ wee little adventure packs big excitement on OC’s back bays by Nikki Sammartino

AUGUST 2015

Beingon

Chris Mozitis’ fishing boat is like going out fishing with someone you’ve known most of your life. Whether it be on the bay or out in the ocean, the Wee Cat Fishing Charters crew knows just when and where to go to make the catch. With their help and expertise even I, a nervous and inexperienced fisherwoman, was able to reel in a few decently sized flounder. In early July, I was fortunate to head out with Chris and his first mate Connor Kelly on a two-hour adventure through the back bays of OC. As I said, my nerves were getting the best of me as we prepared to leave. But Chris and Connor immediately put me at ease. Before we went out on the water, they went over all the safety rules and equipment. Chris is a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, so he knows all about boating safely. This was reassuring. Once we began our journey, I felt myself getting more calm with each ripple in the bay water. Then it was time to fish. Chris and Connor took time to make sure I had the proper bait and line ready to cast to give me the best possibility of catching a fish. That is, after all, why we were out on the bay that day. Chris didn’t just do everything for me, he explained exactly what he was doing in case I ever wanted to try fishing on my own. And it worked! I did catch a couple flounder that day but they had to be thrown back. The entire experience was a blast and the energy was welcoming and friendly. To Chris, taking out a charter isn’t just a job; it’s his passion and it shows. “I’m doing this because you have to love what you’re doing, I wanted to do something where I didn’t think about it as going to work,” said Chris. Wee Cat Fishing Charters offers ocean and bay fishing trips, sunset cruises from Baia restaurant in Somers Point, and dolphin watches. Chris also will take your name and cell phone number so he can text you if he decides to go out fishing on his own. He will invite you to tag along for only $35. He even runs a summer Sportsman Camp for young fisherman who want a more serious experience learning about the sport. One of the camps

recently had an encounter with some brown sharks out in the ocean, spending nearly 15 minutes trying to reel them in. One of the sharks was so strong that it broke the line and escaped. Although this year was the first year of chartering, Chris is well experienced in saltwater fishing and has about 40 years experience in local waters. He’s been fishing with his father since he was five years old and as he got older, he began to fish with friends. Since he was always taking friends out to fish he felt that starting a chartering business would be a perfect fit. Connor, although only 14 and a incoming freshman at Mainland High School in the fall, has been fishing for as long as he can remember – about ten years. “I followed my friends to it [fishing] and had a lake basically in my front yard. I would always go fishing there, my mom got me a rod from K-Mart. That’s where it all started,” Connor said. So how does someone so young become the first mate on a fishing charter? It was a family matter. Chris and Connor’s family have known each other for a long time. So, it was an easy decision for Chris when he decided to open a charter business and needed a first mate. But what does it mean exactly to be the first mate? Connor is constantly grabbing a line, baiting a hook, or netting a fish to help Chris in any way he can. “I appreciate having a first mate. Connor helps a lot – I have to have eyes in the back of my head. I need to watch the bridge, the buoys, the depth – he helps with all that,” said Chris. Connor has some pretty adventurous fishing stories of his own. His favorite is of a time he was fishing off the Ventnor Pier with friends and caught a seven foot sand tiger shark, having to pull it around the pier, up an eight foot gate, and down to the beach, almost losing the shark three times. Chris also has some great fish tales. “Earlier today we caught sharks and we came up on a dolphin floating in the water. I’ve been fishing and had baby whales breach next to the boat,” said Chris. “Last season a humpback whale breached 150 feet from the boat. It went back down under and I never saw it again. I’ve even seen dolphins perform a show worthy of Sea World.”

If you’re anything like me, by now you’re probably wondering what a wee cat is and why Chris named his boat after it. The term ‘wee cat’ is an Irish expression Chris’ mother-in-law used to refer to his daughter Grace when she was young and getting into trouble. When it comes to naming boats, it’s common to name them after a girl, but Chris wanted to add a bit of character to his. Wee Cat Fishing Charters is a small local

business with big personality. Chris makes you feel welcome from the moment you arrive at the dock and by the time the trip ends it’s as if you are saying goodbye to an old friend. Chris and Connor are both so passionate about what they do and their love of being on the water is contagious. “I love the freedom and adventure, especially when you’re out on the ocean because you never know what you’re going to see from day to day,” Chris said. “It’s exciting, it’s clean, it’s fresh. You smell that air when you hit the inlet and you feel like you’re in another world.” 61

On the Beach

BOOK OF THE MONTH The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty

Cora is a woman who has carried many names. First just Cora, then Cora X, then Cora Kaufmann, and finally Cora Carlisle. She is a seemingly normal 36-year old woman in the 1920s who is made responsible for the pouting, alluring 15-year-old Louise Brooks, whose only goal is to become a famous actor or dancer no matter what the cost. She could care less about her seemingly dull, close-minded chaperone. But when the two women reach New York City for the summer, Cora learns that Louise isn’t nearly as innocent as she might seem, and the drab chaperone has lived a much more colorful life than she will admit. It takes a revelation about her past for Cora to be able to become an advocate for the overlooked folks in her future. JoHannah Newman

Human & Animal Connections Begin at Beacon Animal Rescue By Cindy Ferraino and Stefanie Godfrey

S

HORTLY AFTER turning onto Butter Road in Upper Township, several signs low to the ground issue pleas to slow down. No, these are not “watch the children” signs, but they are alerting drivers to look out for a special kind of pedestrian - our furry friends. These signs were put up by the volunteers of the Beacon Animal Rescue because it’s here on this long, straight marshy road where a low key white building, set back a bit, gives new life to rescued animals. Beacon Animal Rescue is a 501c3 non-profit, no-kill facility that began in 2003 by Upper Township residents Cheryl Alessandrine and Jeanne Swift. The two animal lovers passed out flyers and knocked on doors of families and friends to foster unwanted or tossed aside creatures. Twelve years later and Beacon is thriving. “We’re not only saving one life by rescuing, but saving two because we are making room for a new animal to be saved,” said manager Al Reese. Al has been with Beacon for 10 -11 years. He got hooked after his wife Kathleen became a volunteer. “I’m involved because of my love for animals and my love for getting them rehomed,” he said. It’s this act of rehoming an animal that’s Al’s favorite part of working at Beacon. “When they are going out the door to a family, it’s my happy time. I love watching the dog and cat go out the door with an adoptive parent,” said Al. Beacon takes rehoming their animals very seriously. They do a light background check with a vet reference and a personal reference and if need be they do a home check. According to Al, 99 percent of all adoptions are by locals, but there are some people who come from out of state. “We’ve had people come from Connecticut and Maryland,” said Al. “But it’s the same procedure.” Beacon’s caring service begins from before the animal even comes to the

shelter. Though it may seem like the shelter gets pets from off the street, this is only true in a small percentage of the animals. Most come from other shelters that have more animals than they can handle. “Dogs don’t come in very often from the street. Mostly we rescue from other shelters that are overcrowded. We take in a few relinquishes but not too often. We take from Cape May County shelter number one and from Atlantic County and Burlington County. When an animal comes in, the vet tech on staff will examine him or her, check past medical records, microchip them if necessary and give any shots needed (with the exception of the rabies vaccine). This organization relies on its staff along with a band of 40 volunteers to care for the animals in its 12 kennel facility. In addition to walking space that the volunteers share with the motorists along Butter Road, the dogs get to burn some energy off near the beautiful gardens as well as the tree areas that line the property. There’s even a garden dedicated to the former, beloved pets that have trotted across the pathway to the screen door of the rescue. Volunteer Christina Maclane has been with Beacon Animal Rescue for three years. She explained how the volunteers let the dogs know when the volunteers are ready to take them out for an adventure or when a family member is ready to meet the “newest addition” to the family. “We (the volunteers) put a red towel on the fence and the dogs know when someone is coming in, “ Christina said. When I asked Al how the dogs know just by seeing a red towel, he laughed and said, “We have very intelligent dogs here!” Though there’s little doubt of our four legged friends’ intelligence, the red towels alert the volunteers that someone is taking another dog for a walk. “We have walkers going in and out of there. We put the towel up so two dogs aren’t in the yard passing each other,” said Al. Beacon relies on the generosity of people through donations and spreading the word through social media and even the good old fashioned forms of communication: flyers and word-of-mouth. “We run fundraisers, have coin drops throughout towns and even use facebook and other social media to get the word out,” Al said. “Social media has been a huge plus for us.” To adopt your own furry pal, head to the shelter’s website. Here you can also sign up to be a volunteer. Local girl and boy scout troops have adopted the rescue as their place to help the volunteers maintain and beautify the facility. Al believes this is the springboard to teach the importance of paying it forward. “We encourage parents to bring in their children to interact with the animals. These children are being raised with compassion and kindness.”
