From the Editor This morning I went to get my family donuts… it was Sunday and
sweets every Sunday morning have become a tradition of sorts. I took my middle son Finn and as we pulled our minivan into a spot across the street from Dot’s Pastry Shop I saw several people standing outside (in the misty rain). The crowd was to be expected, this was Fourth of July weekend. “Finn, get in line,” I said as he Rae Franklin, Finn and Salem Godcarefully crossed the street and joined frey, and Vince Franklin hanging on the group. the Boards. As I met my son over there, a gentleman in a fine hat said to us, “You have to go inside and get a number.... it won't take long.” I must have had sugar amnesia… I’ve been to Dot’s enough to know this, but in my rush to get donutted, I forgot. That’s the beauty of the OC… people are happy and helpful on this island. Most of our visitors are on vacation and ready to relax. Though I work here, I’m always ready to relax and have a good time. The ten minute wait at Dot’s was well worth the explosion of taste each bite of my powdered vanilla cream donut had. Its exterior has a bit of crunch and chew while the inside filling is light and sweet. Our helpful friend was right when he said the wait wouldn’t be that long, and he said goodbye as he toted his three boxes of goodies out of the shop. It wasn’t and we had fun talking to the other people waiting and hearing their plans for the day. If you're now jonesing for your next donut, read our intern Briana’s tour de donuts where she tastes the delightful confections offered throughout town. Donuts taste better down the shore, no? Briana's story is online at www.ocnjmagazine.com. And suddenly... it's August. The leaves are a deeper green and the sunset dazzles us a little earlier than it did last month… but this is prime summertime. This is running-through-the-sprinklers, boogie-boarding-in-the-ocean-till-your-parentscall-you-in, eating-ice-cream-on-the-porch-with-your-friends weather. So how are you going to make the best of this last full month of the season? You are starting it off right by reading this magazine. Ocean City magazine is your best guide to all things Ocean City. FACEBOOK FAN OF THE MONTH
Rachael Abrams FOR ALL OF MY CHILDHOOD my family and I would vacation every year for one week in Ocean City. I have so many fond memories here with my family and the town that I want to continue the tradition with my husband and our three children. This is our Day in the Life of Ocean City.... We are staying at the Beach Club Hotel on the Boardwalk. Growing up I passed this hotel always wishing I could stay here. Well, my wish came true! Breakfast is always at the Cafe Beach Club. My husband, children, mother and father start our day off right with good food and great service here. We all head back to our rooms and change because it's beach time. Stick our toes in the sand and the kids catch some waves. We head back to the pool at our hotel to swim and play cards. We all like to stroll the boards at night and catch a bite to eat. A little bit of this and that. We go all out with snacks. So much to choose from like Manco Pizza, George's macaroons, Swedish fish and the Fudge Kitchen. But watch out for the seagulls! They swoop down to get a bite to eat right out your hand! We finish up with some rides like the double shot and the Ferris wheel; Anything for a thrill. Our eyes are sleepy and we are winding down and start to head back to our hotel. On the way back we make a sweatshirt to wear at home to remind us of the fun time we had in Ocean City. Time to sleep so we can start over again tomorrow. Rachael won 50 tickets to Wonderland Pier for participating! If you'd like to be our next FFOTM, send an email to editor@ ocnjmagazine.com.

Cathy Greene Donut Maven (& Owner) at Cathy's 14th Street Bakery
“A donut has power to start your day right” Owner Cathy Greene puts the ring donuts in to proof
J
UST when I thought there was nothing sweeter than a donut, I met with the owner of Cathy’s 14th Street Bakery. Cathy Greene is the woman behind this family bakery celebrating its fifth summer in business. I joined Cathy and her family for a morning filled with donut making and eating. It was as delicious as you would think, so try not to be too jealous. As soon as I walked in, the sweet sugary-scented air hit me, instantly putting me in a pastry mood. Since

I usually skip breakfast this really got my belly growling. Luckily, it took no time for me to jump right in and make some frosted donuts. I started at the fryer. The batter gets pushed out into the iconic ring shape we all know and love right into the oil. An old school metal cylinder is attached to the wall and deposits the batter through the bottom as it’s cranked by hand. Cathy’s daughter, Mackenzie, quickly and skillfully flipped the donuts over with two wooden tools that looked like drum sticks, so they would cook
evenly on both sides. I tried to focus, instead envisioned them rolling right down into my stomach. As soon as they were done frying, the donuts were put on a screen to cool. Once they were the right temperature, it was their time to shine with glaze. The rings got frosted and then were topped with jimmies, or sprinkles depending on where you stand on this heated national debate. The irony in donut making, Cathy said, is that even though a donut takes only seconds to fry, the dough takes a very long time to prepare. Before they
are fried, all the yummy ingredients are mixed together and rolled out, just as you would do in your own kitchen with a rolling pin. The next step is a process called “docking,” and is done while the dough is rolled out flat. A special tool makes tiny dents in the dough with its spiked rotator in order to relax the dough. With certain types of donuts, the shape is cut out at this stage. The cut out donuts are put into a big
metal contraption with a glass window called the proof box. The proof box is a temperature and humidity controlled place where the dough gets the chance to rise properly, which down the road gets you a nice fluffy donut. Many hours later you got yourself some donuts that are ready to be fried. “The hours of a baker are crazy, but it’s a labor of love,” said Cathy. Every donut that comes out of
Cathy’s kitchen is made by hand. As I covered the freshly cooked donuts with cinnamon sugar, we talked about the pros and cons of having a family business. Cathy has seven children and many of them work at the bakery. “The pros really outweigh the cons. I really love having them here because they know how to work,” Cathy said with a contagious smile. “They can basically run this place, they know how

to do everything in the front and back.” Cathy's purpose is to make people happy through her food and customer service, but also acknowledges the donut's simplicity. “Sure it is just a donut, it’s not life or death, but it does have the power to start your day off on the right foot and make you smile,” she said. It’s all about the smiles with Cathy, and she sure was able to put one on my face when it came time to make their most popular seller; the almighty cream-filled
powdered donut. If I hadn’t seen it made with my own two eyes, I would have been sure it was a cloud sent from heaven. First, the cooked treat was sliced in half so there was just about an inch or so still connected together. Then it took a little swim in powdered sugar, coming out all white and almost unrecognizable from the golden brown it once was. Then came the best part; when it got filled. The vanilla cream is put in between the two open ends with a pastry bag, creating not only a delicious,

Battle Breakfast Sandwich
Perfect morning bite!
On a brioche bun!
I saw a sign somewhere that said, "happiness is a bagel with cream cheese." Have truer words ever been spoken? Can I get a heck yeah?! A bagel is essentially the perfect morning food. It's warm, chewy, with a slight crunch, and enough carbs to keep you fueled up til lunchtime. Pair it with protein and it's like it just went into a phone booth and came out with a cape on. Yes, I'm nominating a bagel for our next new superfood. It can leap tall buildings in a single bound, it's faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive... you know the drill. For their Ocean City Breakfast Sandwich,
A sensational breakfast sandwich, but more on that in a minute. First, I called ahead and the girl who answered was polite and helpful. So that’s a great start. Then when I showed up, General Manager Declan White was also friendly and polite. The place was sparkly clean and pretty full on a bright summer morning – so far so good. So they call it “the Big Breakfast Sandwich,” and for good reason. My entire family got in on this action. This sandwich consisted of sausage and bacon with a fried egg and American cheese on a perfectly toasted brioche bun. Heavenly. The sausage was a large

Varsity Inn takes the mighty bagel, toasts it, and pairs it up with cream cheese, tomatoes, and grilled Taylor Pork Roll. Now, if you're a regular breakfast sandwich eater, you could be asking, "where are the eggs, where is the bacon?!" But fear not, young readers, after one bite, you'll wonder where this sandwich has been all your life. The saltiness of the pork roll pairs perfectly with the fresh tomato and the tangy cream cheese. Eggs need not apply here.

link that was butterflied and cooked to just the right texture. The bacon was crispy and flavorful and the cheese was delicately melted. And that brioche roll is a fantastic choice. The dish was served with home fries which were also cooked just right and nicely flavored. I truly appreciated the various textures throughout the sandwich; the soft roll and melted cheese, the slightly crisp sausage and the crispier bacon with the fried egg coming and connecting all the flavors. Thoughtful and most delicious. I’m going for another one tomorrow.

BASHFUL BANANA
Serving healthy, creative fare at the Shore
T
HE Bashful Banana Bakery and Cafe, best-known for its yummy banana whips and bakery items, also has a delicious and nutritious dinner menu. Did you know this? Now you do. And you should do yourself and your whole family a favor by heading over and partaking in their completely delicious and deviously healthy menu (the kids will never know it's good for you). I think I’m a pretty cool food aficionado in the OC. I know where all the best places are located. I know the best places for scones, for pizza, for fries, for donuts, for everything. And now I’m adding the Bashful Banana to my favorites, but I’m not quite sure in which category to place it. I hate to use the “healthy” category because the BB is so much more than a restaurant with healthy food. It’s a restaurant with tasty, healthy food that is thoughtfully prepared and served. So let’s put it in the “yummy-place-to-take-thefamily-for-a-healthy-meal” category. So I took the large extended-family group

– 10 of us – and headed to the Banana for a trip into the culinary unknown. The BB has a focus on nutritious food. Their website says they serve “healthy gourmet meals with great taste and appeal.” But when our server Kamea told us there was no red meat or fried items on the menu, I was a bit taken aback. Since the BB had come to my attention on a good recommendation I didn’t resist the karmic nudge toward a wholesome meal and instead rolled with the healthy. Now be advised, I’m usually a bit skeptical of “healthy” items. But I have to tell you, I truly enjoyed my turkey burger and the whole experience. As I said, my food moods change; sometimes I want pizza, sometimes it’s nice to munch on something that’s easier on the heart valves.
We assembled a large crew for this mission; myself (Tony Stark), Captain Steve Rogers (aka “Cap”), Godzilla and Mothra, Maleficent, the Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and of course, the indomitable Pepper Potts. We rolled down the Boardwalk like we were the Justice League or something, took a turn onto Colony Walk near 10th Street and blam! We found a large empty table outside with enough seating for all of us. Destiny was on our side! We sat down and were greeted immediately by Kamea, a friendly damsel with a quick easy smile. Kamea was a pleasant accompaniment throughout our entire meal, and never flinched even as we asked her a thousand questions. I decided to go with the turkey mushroom burger with sautéed onions, mushrooms and swiss. I was pleased when my burger came out juicy and yummy with a nice texture on the teeth. I rarely order turkey burgers when I dine out simply because most restaurants don’t know how to handle the protein properly, but after almost 20 years in business, the BB gets this one right. Maleficent also ordered the turkey mushroom burger and was quite pleased with her choice. She was also pleased with her side dish.

“The coleslaw is very good and I like that it has a creamy consistency. The burger is tasty and juicy and the mushrooms are cooked to perfection. I love the ciabatta that it’s on. I took some of the bruschetta appetizer and mixed it in with the burger – so good.” Wonder Woman, along with Mothra and Captain America, ordered the chicken tenders, as is their habit. “These chicken nuggets are very good,” said the princess. “They’re better than most other chicken tenders. I like that they came with fruit – the fruit is good too, very fresh and sweet.” Mothra took a break from his constant battle with Godzilla to devour his meal, and even found time to comment on his feast. “The chicken fingers aren’t fried and I really like that,” said Mothra. “The meat has a better texture than when it’s fried and I like that. Plus I like that it came with watermelon, which was very fresh and sweet.” The lack of fried foods did not cause the Captain to run screaming into the night.
On the contrary, he was quite pleased. “The chicken tenders taste especially good, but they needed salt,” said Cap. The Green Lantern ordered the Spicy Hot Turkey Cheesesteak which I must say looked very appealing. “This is really good. All the flavors come together nicely, and it’s tasty and spicy. Lots of veggies in there, not too much bread – an excellent sandwich,” he said. When owner Heidi Edwards opened this little eatery 18 years ago, she decided on a philosophy of delicious and wholesome food. She stuck with it, and these many years later it still works. “When I took over about 18 years ago it was just a vegetarian place. So I expanded the menu. I wanted to give families that were sick of pizza and french fries more choices for healthy items. I want it to be like eating at home. But on the Boardwalk with outside seating,” she said. I knew the BB because of their signature banana whip which is similar to frozen custard, but made with bananas,
yes it’s only bananas, although there are plenty of toppings including non-dairy chocolate chips, granola, fresh fruit, an all-fruit fudge sauce and a few more. “Our banana whips are what we’re best known for, but instead of having sugar and dairy and ice cream the option is just bananas flavored with different fruits – no added sweeteners – and we have lots of healthy toppings, too,” said Heidi. They have bagels, cookies and cakes too including a large selection of whole grain, high fiber, vegan, gluten free and nondairy varieties that are baked on premises. “We wanted to offer high fiber and healthy items, but still make it really tasty so the kids want it. The donuts have whole wheat flour and they’re baked. We’re sliding in the good stuff and the kids don’t even realize it," Heidi said. “Everything is done to order. We squeeze our own juices here, like the vegetable juices. We have a lot of organic items too.” Winner.

In the Know with Ocean City Girl Hello there my summer beach babies! Are you totally enjoying all the fun events going on here like I am? It's hard for me to contain my excitement when I go from one place to another, it's so wonderful! The city is hopping and I'm enjoying every minute. Whether you are here for a week; a month or the entire summer you won't be bored, there is always something to see or do. Ocean City has so much to offer for every age group, that's part of why it's America's Greatest Family Resort. So, without further ado, get in your comfy chair, grab your iced coffee and sunglasses and let's plunge into this month's questions.
Dear Ocean City Girl, I love all the food places on the Boardwalk. Do you have any recommendation as to what to eat first or what to make sure to eat? Signed, Boardwalk Nosher Dear Boardwalk Nosher, I love to eat my way up and down the Boardwalk. One definite is Manco & Manco for a slice or two of pizza. Then for a sweet I head to Laura's Fudge and get chocolate covered bacon. Of course I have to wash it down with an iced beverage from Ocean City Coffee Company. At Curley's Fries I love to get a cup of vinegar with my fries. You can attach the cup to the container of fries and dip them in for extra flavor with each fry. After the salt and tart I need to cool off with some ice cold Kohr Bros! There is nothing like a vanilla chocolate swirl with rainbow jimmies to balance it all. From there I head to the Promenade for some deep fried goodies. I usually try something different each time whether it's deep fried oreos or deep fried pickles. Once I get the deep fried goodness I add funnel cake to the mix and sit and enjoy the view as there is usually a caricature artist on hand. By now the sweet tooth is filled and I need some salt so I head to Ike's Famous Crabcakes and grab a crabcake with an extra tartar or head to Chickie's and Pete's for some Crabby Fries. Now that I have gotten a good bit of eating I slow it down with a stop at Steel's Fudge for a chocolate covered strawberry, followed by a tub of Johnson's Popcorn, with the lid off so you can get more. The warm caramel on the popcorn is just the perfect combination. I love Shriver's Salt Water Taffy. I will go there and get almond macaroons, coconut macaroons and some salt water taffy and mint rolls. Now the first three I will eat as I walk but save the mint rolls for once I am home and done eating. The mint is calming and a perfect night cap to an awesome feast.
Dear Ocean City Girl, I was hoping you could help give me a place for a nice, secluded, romantic walk? We are planning a date night and want to go for a walk after. Thanks, Prince Charming Dear Prince Charming, I am honored you asked and hope my reply allows for an enchanted evening for you and your Cinderella. I think there is nothing more romantic than a walk along the beach. Hearing the waves as they crash along the sand; seagulls cawing their hellos to each other; the sea breeze whispering in your ears as it cools your skin. It's nature's own orchestra performance with you in the front row! I love getting up early and walking along the beach while the sun rises over the ocean. Something about the start of a brand new day that I am getting to witness just warms the soul-like hot cocoa after building a snowman. You could start at Sixth Street and walk your way to First in the Gardens. That lets you face the sun so you don't miss the gorgeous golden glow awakening the world. On the flip side, taking a walk at sunset, seeing the swirls of pinks, blues, and pastels is so calming and peaceful. I have gone from 56th Street around to Corson's Inlet State Park, up to Bay Avenue and back to 56th Street. It was a long walk, not always empty around the park but beautiful and fun. You feel the magical serenity that would be the storybook ending oh so fitting for Prince Charming and Cinderella! Until next time - Wishing you all Ocean Waves of Peace, Love & Sunshine

ADORABLE CREATURE OF THE MONTH
American Bittern Photographed by Ray Zaleski
Photographer Ray Zaleski spotted this new guy in town – no easy feat thanks to their camouflaging color and swift movements. "You'll need sharp eyes to catch sight of an American Bittern. This streaky, brown and buff heron can materialize among the reeds, and disappear as quickly, especially when striking a concealment pose with neck stretched and bill pointed skyward. These stealthy carnivores stand motionless amid tall marsh vegetation, or patiently stalk fish, frogs, and insects. They are at their most noticeable in spring, when the marshes resound with their odd booming calls that sounds like the gulps of a thirsty giant." - allaboutbirds.org.

How long have you worked at Frey? Since last October.
How long have you worked here? This is my fourth day.
Favorite item in the store? I love the line Love Shack Fancy; I’m actually
Favorite ice cream flavor? Salted Caramel Pretzel.
Favorite pizza in Ocean City? A plain slice from Manco and Manco’s Pizza is the best. What is something you’ve always wanted to try but have been too scared? I would love to go on a road trip by myself, but I know I’d get lonely. I would just keep driving until I get to anywhere in California, it’s so beautiful there. Best Ocean City memory? Night in Venice when I was about 16. I got to hangout with my older brother and friends. It was so much fun. Ice cream or frozen yogurt? Chocolate and vanilla ice cream with M&M’s on top hits the spot. Last movie you saw? Wolf of Wall Street, but I’m looking forward to Finding Dory with my nephew. 22 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE

from Drip n' Scoop
Hot coffee or cold brew? Cold brew. Best way to spend a summer day in Ocean City? Going to the beach with my friends and getting a slice of pizza from Prep’s, biking around the island and challenging my friends to a game of basketball or beach volleyball. Favorite place you have traveled to? I went to Arizona with my family and it was amazing. The scenery was beautiful and I got to hike a mountain behind the hotel. I also bought a dream catcher from the local Native Americans. What is your favorite water sport? I’ve always wanted to try stand-up paddle boarding and surfing, but I love to go jet skiing. I also love parasailing because the views are absolutely amazing and you can see fish swimming below.
Maria Farnan
from Hamburger Construction Co. How long have you worked here? Five summers. What is the best part of working on the OC Boardwalk? The best part about working on the Boardwalk is definitely being able to work so close to the beach and meet people from all over that are visiting the town. What is the most popular item on the menu? Our famous cheeseburger, however, a lot of people also enjoy our pork roll and combine the two to get our “Taylor Burger.” What's the “Taylor Burger?” It is one pork roll and one burger on a single bun. What is your favorite thing on the menu? My favorite thing would have to be the pork roll sub. Would you rather paddle board or kayak? Paddle board.

The Interview Miss Ocean City Shannon Wallace will pass her crown on to a new winner this month
F
ROM the waving and smiling to the dancing, Miss Ocean City Shannon Wallace attributes her successes in life to a strong support system. Mom Aimee, sister Maggie, step dad Jim and grandparents Carol and Tom have guided Shannon from a two-year-old dancer to a 19-year-old student at New York’s Pace University where she will be a sophomore this fall. Though her reign as Miss Ocean City has involved all of the typical pageant-duty trimmings the largest part of the job, Shannon says, is being an ambassador to the city. She will pass her crown, and advice, to the next Miss Ocean City this month all while keeping it real. If you could pick any career, what would it be? I would be a professional dancer like The Rockettes. What would be the first thing you’d do if you were elected president? I would hire a team/cabinet for myself that I thought was fair to both parties as well as independents to make sure that decisions get weighed equally and most effectively. What’s a lesson you’ve learned from a family member? My grandmom always said, ‘it hurts to be beautiful.’ And especially with Miss Ocean City I’ve had the eyelash pulling off, the hair being pulled. It’s intense. That was her famous quote and it turned out to be very, very true.

AUGUST 2016
What would you do with $10 million? I think I would spend a lot locally, trying to help local businesses. I’m all for supporting local businesses and I would funnel a lot of money into local charities and things like that to help the community that helped me as I was growing up. There are a lot of programs I went through that trained me to be the person I am today. If you could live anywhere, where would it be? I believe I’d live in Italy. My grandparents have been there quite a few times and that side of the family is Italian. I like the culture, the relaxed, community based environment they have there. There’s the architecture, the food. Everything is amazing. If you won a contest and everything on the Boardwalk was free for a day, what are some of the things you’d do? I’d definitely have to go on an all-out shopping spree because I’m such a shopaholic. I’ve always wanted to try all of the french fries on the Boardwalk. I’d just go through the fries from each place. Same thing with pizza. I’d definitely go on some rides since I haven’t been on any in forever and try the new Gail Force coaster. I’m nervous to go on it because I’m not a big rollercoaster person but I’m going to try it anyway. What is one of your greatest fears? Being abandoned and being alone. I’m a bubbly person and like
talking to people and being involved in things so I think if I was in isolation and didn’t have anyone around me, I wouldn’t be happy. What is your best accomplishment? Getting to go to school at Pace and getting a good scholarship to go there. New York is one of my favorite places and to get in there is a big accomplishment for me. I thought, wow, I was chosen out of all of these applicants and got a good scholarship as well. What qualities do you look for in friends? Someone who is trustworthy. Someone who can tell it like it is and isn’t afraid to tell you how it is. Someone who would drop everything for you. I have a few friends who are like that and I’ve been friends with them forever. My close, close friends are a part of my family. They share the same qualities my family has. They’d take a bullet for me and I’d do the same for them. Who are some of your heroes? I look to each and every person in my family for a different kind of inspiration
and strength. My mom is up there. She’s probably number one because she’s been the most influential person because she’s given up so much for me to do everything we’ve done. We’re a very close family. My grandmom as well. The three of us and my sister are very close.
hat, which is why I had the hat on. You just get up and keep going.
What is a treasured memory? There are a lot, but any time when my family gets together. It feels like every piece is in place. What is an embarrassing moment you overcame? When I was really little in a major dance competition. I was really tiny and in the back of the stage; I was a little string bean child. A bigger girl in front of me threw her arm back and hit me. My nose was basically punched and I really wanted to cry with my nose probably almost broken, but I kept going. I’ve had many costume malfunctions. Many unhookings. In pageants I’ve had props fall. When I was performing at Little Miss Ocean City my hat flew off and fell off the stage and of course my hair looked terrible under the
What is a motto you follow? I talk to a lot of people and you’re not going to love everyone you meet. You still have to be nice. ‘Kill them with kindness,’ as my mom would always say. Even if they make your blood boil, you always want to be the better person and not stoop to someone’s level. What would you tell the next Miss Ocean City? To be a real person. As much as kids kind of look at you as a princess, I’ve tried to be a very grounded person. Be real. The best part of you is your true self. Be Miss Ocean City for the city not just for yourself. If you look at the last few winners, we’ve always had a very kind, polite Miss Ocean City. I always strive to be very grounded and humble. I’m still Shannon Wallace, but I’m Miss Ocean City as well. You don’t become it, it becomes you. - Interview by Hanna Schweder. Photo by Bill Godfrey

IGHTY years ago, the 1936 Democratic National Convention was held in Philadelphia. The chairman of the huge event was John B. Kelly, a longtime supporter of the Ocean City Beach Patrol. Kelly used the national stage a place to show of the OCBP’s lifesaving skills. Captain Jack G. Jernee accepted an invitation from Kelly to be in charge of a special half-mile race for United States lifeguards. The race took place on Sunday, June 28 on the Schuylkill River. The results of the event were covered in newspapers all over the country. The June 29, 1936 Ocean City Daily Sentinel-Ledger reported the news under this front page headline: “Ocean City Sweeps All Four Places in Schuylkill River National Half-Mile Contest; Resort Life Guards Thrill 25,000 With Exhibition of Rescues – Parlette and Dougherty Nose Out Carey and Drozdov.” The Philadelphia Evening Bulletin reported the lifeguard event under the headline: “Colorful Boat Races Feature Schuylkill Navy on Parade; Ocean City Life Guards Star.” The article began, “Ocean City’s bronzed life guards, in charge of Captain Jack G. Jernee, put on a magnificent show, not only by winning the life guard boat championship race but also in demonstrating life

saving methods, with boats, can buoys and surf boat. “In a field of eight crews, the Ocean City pair of Lew Parlette and Jim Dougherty carried off the honors, three other life boats from the same resort finishing ahead of those manned by Wildwood and Cape Mayhuskies. “The can rescue team of Ed Kelly, Al Reichenbach and Al Okavage, elicited rounds of applause by rescuing a supposed drowning man in 28 seconds while John Carey, Jim Dougherty and Reichenbach, also of Ocean City, made up a surf board rescue trio that performed in rare time.” June 29, 1936 was a special day for the OCBP thanks to the opportunity given them by John B. Kelly and Captain Jack G. Jernee. The Democrats met in Convention Hall where President Franklin D. Roosevelt was nominated to run for his second term on June 25, 1936.

MATTER OF ART Text by Deborah Worchel. Photo by Briana Duffy
We all have stories to share about our first visit to Ocean City, and it comes as no surprise that children’s author John Leone’s tale is just like his books: humorous, suspenseful and told with enthusiasm.
It was the mid-sixties and John, a Bellmawr native, had only ever been to beach towns further north. "I was a little surprised when my high school Spanish teacher said to my buddy and me ‘Why don’t you guys take a little trip down to Ocean City?,’" said John. Apparently, the summer gig for their Spanish teacher was working at Del’s on the Boardwalk. The curious pair of teenagers had one problem. They did not have a car. But times were different then, and they managed to hitch a ride to Ocean City. John still remembers the taste of the burger he had at Del’s, the sound of the waves coming up under the boardwalk and the rest, as they say, is history. John has returned to Ocean City every summer since and more recently, has begun writing and selfpublishing children’s books in order to share his love of the beach and Ocean City with a whole new generation of beach goers. John’s latest series of books, The Sharklock Bones Beach Towns Series, feature some regular characters, Sharklock Bones, Data Dolphin, and Dr. Flotsam, as well as some guest characters like Marlin Monroe, Dr. Devious Dolphin, and musical guests The Beagles and The Whoo. As you might have guessed, his books are full of word play to keep older children and parents laughing. “(My goal is) to write children’s books for the whole family,” said John. Much of the word play and humor he puts into his stories is designed to keep parents and grandparents chuckling at the references to pop culture icons from their own childhoods. All of his Sharklock Bones and Beach Town Series are written in a screenplay format, because John believes this encourages children and parents to take turns reading. Different family members can each read a character so the entire family can share a reading experience and all the laughs that go along with it. John recalls that he was originally inspired to begin writing children’s books after an outing with his family to a Madrigal

Dinner. "(A Jester came out) flip flopping like a fish and making terrible puns about fish,” John said. “I thought I could do better than that.” And shortly after, he began work on his first Sharklock Bones book, Sharklock Bones: Fish Tales. His original plan was simply to print out his “book” and give it to his grandson (whom he had recently taken on an outing to the Camden Aquarium) as a Christmas gift. He encountered printer problems at home, so he printed the text out at work. His boss, who knew John was close to retirement, asked, “Is this what you are going to do in retirement? Write books?” When his grandson opened his gift at Christmas and John’s granddaughter immediately asked “Where’s my book?” John knew that his next career would be writing. Because he prefers to write and publish at his own pace, John self-publishes his books. Sometimes a story idea is inspired by a single photograph or real life image he encounters, and other times it develops from a variety of sources. Either way, John explains, “I get the story in my head first and then I put it down on paper. I like the option for speed with self-publishing. I published four books within the last few months so I may just take the summer off.” He smiles, pauses for a moment and then laughs, adding “But probably not!” The Beach Town Series currently includes four books, two of which are set in Ocean City. The books in this series feature actual photographs of familiar landmarks in the towns in which they are set. John notes, “People go on vacation and the have their regular haunts and stay within an area of just a couple blocks and never break out of that. I hope my books can give people new ideas of places to see while on vacation.” Indeed, the second book in this series, “Ocean City Tales” features a variety of familiar Ocean City landmarks, including things as diverse as the model of The Sindia in the Historical Museum, the lobby of The Flanders, and the Congo Falls mini-golf course. Families with young children could certainly spend a day seeing if their children could “spot” the real life version of the photos during a parent led tour. Book number four in the series, “Return to Ocean City Tales,” centers around a mystery unraveling at the Ocean City Music Pier and includes pictures from the City’s well known “Doo-Dah Parade.” In a nostalgic nod to John’s own history with Ocean City, the book concludes with a beautiful photograph of the Boardwalk, showing Del’s to the left and the music pier in the distance with an amazing double rainbow touching down behind it. Perhaps Sharklock Bones speaks for all of us when he says to Marlin Monroe, “Ocean City is a nice romantic city. I know you’ll like it here. A lot to see and do for the whole family. Let’s stroll along the Boardwalk.”

IN THE BIZ RASTA LEMONADE
Rasta Lemonade is bringing good vibes and an all natural lifestyle to the Boardwalk. Text by Paige Benedetto & photos by Pam Leypoldt
C
OLD lemonade is tangy, sweet, and thirst quenching; it goes together with summer like peanut butter and jelly and it has remained pretty much the same each year... until now. Rasta Lemonade on the Boardwalk has all natural ingredients, no pesky preservatives, hails from Jamaica, and has no lemons. That’s right, this lemonade has no actual lemons in it… and you’ll be happy about it. Michael Vita and Audley (Colonel) Anderson opened up Rasta Lemonade on 13th Street on the Boardwalk a couple months ago, but these two businessmen met 15 years ago and have been very close friends ever since. A friend of Mike’s took him to Jamaica to meet his friend Colonel, an indigenous Rastafarian, and the two hit it off. Mike, who grew up in the Catskills and spent most of his life in the New York City food scene was intrigued by the Rastafarian lifestyle that Colonel led. “The first day that we met I found Colonel to be the most interesting person I have ever met… and that was how our relationship began,” Mike said. According to Colonel, the Rastafarian lifestyle constantly surrounds the concept of natural living. It's the reason Colonel grows his hair long and eats only the things he grows on his farm in Jamaica; Colonel lives organically and from the Earth. “You're talking about everything vegan, and that was something I had never thought about in my life,” Mike said. “Years later, I developed a love

affair with Jamaica and natural living and fruits and vegetables.” The two friends soon talked about making food together. “That is the way we live at home, all natural with fruits and vegetables,” Colonel said. Inspired by the Rastafarian lifestyle, Mike and Colonel started Rasta Ade Refreshments and Vegan Food Café on the beach in Negril, Jamaica one year ago. So, how did the friends go from owning a cafe in tropical Jamaica to owning another business looking out over the Atlantic? Mike spent some summers as a child in Ocean City, and because Mike and Colonel are so passionate about spreading their message about natural living they decided to give it a go. They brought the first thing they ever made together, an all natural and delicious lemonade to the Boardwalk. Colonel and Mike want to make sure Rasta Lemonade stays true to its roots, so there are hats, necklaces and other Jamaican items for sale in the shop. All of the decorations represent Jamaica and different artists living there, and reggae music is playing so

customers can experience a little piece of Jamaica right here in OC. “Lemonade is a part of our living and it is a simple treat,” explained Colonel. “Our lemonade is made in an extraordinary way. We try to extract all of the clean juice out of whatever we are using and then we blend,” Mike said. Because of this method, the lemonade has no graininess or pulp. “It is time consuming, but the result is magnificent,” Mike said. "We take the juice from the cane to sweeten the drinks. Our juice is unpasteurized and naturally preserved and it offers everything from aides to your immune system and digestion, to electrolytes.” The lemonade is blended with different citrus fruits and juices to create the allnatural beverage that the two men are both proud of. You may be wondering
why it's called "lemonade" when there are no actual lemons in it? In Jamaica lemonade is not defined by one fruit. “We don’t use the lemon because it is agriculturally different here; it tastes very different back in Jamaica.” Mike said. The two men want to stay honest and genuine in their drink. In Ocean City, Mike and Colonel use only local produce when making their lemonade and they have a farmer who takes the fruit rinds, which significantly reduces any waste. This recycling is another part of the Rastafarian lifestyle that Colonel lives in Jamaica. In fact, this is his first trip of out his home country. “I want to experience whatever I can in life,” Colonel said. Colonel emits his positive vibes in everything that he does. “I want to spread to others the way that
I live my life back home, my all natural life,” he explained. The Earth inspires Colonel. “Everything is natural, from the cups you drink out of to the hats you wear back in Jamaica, so it is really interesting to bring that honesty to Ocean City. We both want to spread the lifestyle,” Mike said. Colonel's influence has taught Mike to live naturally and clean and the two are hoping to pass along this lifestyle to others. “I believe that each of us comes to earth with a mission but some people deviate from this mission," Colonel said. "I know I am here to think about and teach the generation to come about natural living."

Beach Delivery
Did you think you wouldn't make it last time you trekked to the beach? Don't sweat it... next time let the new beach delivery services help you out. Text by Lucia Casaleno. Photos by Macy Oteri.
Y
OU'VE seen it – a mom trying to drag a Wonder Wheeler down the beach, while she's holding a baby with one hand and trying to keep everyone's flip flops from dropping out of her other hand. The beach is fun, and beautiful, but sometimes when the whole family is trying to get there it can become quite the stressful production. I know when my family tries to get there, we could be featured on a reality show. Lucky for us, there are businesses popping up that help beach goers. What happens when you put a nurse, four teachers, and a media director together over some pizza on the beach? Beach Caddy – a beach delivery business, that's what. Co-owner Todd Serpico and his fellow business partners have vacationed in Ocean City most of their lives and love being a part of the community. "Within 90 days we had all the licenses ready to go. We started the company Memorial Day,” said Todd. How it works is simple. Using the free Beach Caddy app you order your own personal caddy. A caddy will come to your location within 30 minutes with a beach cart, load up your things and take it to where you want on the beach. Then they set it all up for you from the chairs to umbrella. As if this wasn't enough to have you dancing in your flip flops... you can even book the caddy to come and get your things when you want to leave. This business will make you feel like the prince or princess of any beach. The caddy coming to help you out will most likely be a local teen who will enjoy assisting you and your family to the beach. 52 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE

"(We are) really proud to help local kids and family businesses,” said Todd. "It is in a way making them 'mini entrepreneurs' who will one day possibly start their own business.” In some cases Beach Caddy can make the impossible possible. Older people with special medical needs or children with disabilities can access the beach much easier or even at all when they have the assistance from a caddy. "Being able to help someone is priceless,” said Todd. Talking about carrying all these things way up and down the beach has made me hungry… luckily I can just order a lunch delivered right to the top of the bulk head from Beach Bucket Lunch. And I literally only have to lift a finger. Now in its third season, Beach Bucket Lunch focuses on making beach days easier and providing amazing customer service. I met with owner Gretchen Ritter who gave me a delicious lunch fit for a queen while showing me how her business works. With her mobile friendly site, customers order the type of sandwich or wrap and drink they want, select a payment method, and

within 30 minutes their lunch is delivered right to the top of their beach in an adorable beach bucket. An average lunch includes a sandwich from Blitz’s Market, (which recently won an award for Best Market in OC and also offers a beach bucket lunch that can be delivered) a beverage, bag of chips and Tastykake. From buffalo chicken cheesesteaks (which I ordered and devoured) to grilled veggie hoagies, there is something for everyone, even the option of a fresh salad. Gretchen wants to ensure quality and accuracy in her food delivery. To help with this, there is an additional comment box for special requests on the website. “Customers are always primary and special orders are fine, I don’t mind doing them,” said Gretchen. If you have a gluten-free diet, you can order from Beach Bucket Lunch. Many items can be made into gluten free options. This summer they are teaming up with Tuckahoe Cheesecake factory, so customers can add a sweet treat to their bucket. “Having a slice of cheesecake is a nice change of pace from the usual ice cream cone,” said Gretchen. Using locally sourced food is something Gretchen takes pride in and feels the customers appreciate it too. “(Beach Bucket Lunch) helps families maximize their time on the beach,” Gretchen said. ACTIVITY OF THE MONTH
LET'S GO CRABBING
T
Paige Benedetto takes her family crabbing in Strathmere
HE CLAWS themselves were like works of art, a beaming blue-purple color that caught my eye as they cut through the ocean. The shell was a mottle of two shades that reminded me of coffee with too much cream and wet sand. Along the edges were darker patches in perfect lines with touches of rich orange and blue hues. With claws grasping onto the fish-bait the crab was swooped up into the net as my uncle let out a sound of pure excitement. He caught the first crab of the day. There is nothing I enjoy more than spending quality time with the people I love. My family has always been the type to move and groove; we never really relax. So when my Uncle Neal decided to take us girls crabbing I was thrilled. “We are going to Whale Creek Marina, renting a boat, and doing it all on our own,” Neal said. In his truck Uncle Neal had long nets, bunker fish to use as bait, and crab lines that he made from string, wire, and a 4-ounce weight. As we drove to Strathmere, right over the bridge from Ocean City heading south, my uncle began to explain the rules of crabbing. “Here are the rules you need to know: 1. The crabs you keep must be 4.5 inches point to point. 2. You aren’t allowed to keep the pregnant crabs no matter what. 3. If you have to go to the bathroom be prepared to go in the bay,” he said.
Missi and Morgan Delany own Whale Creek Marina and this is their ninth season on the water. At Whale Creek, you can rent boats, fishing supplies, crabbing supplies, and just about anything you can imagine in order to have a fun day in the bay. My uncle, cousin Taylor, and girlfriend Candace all climbed into the small boat with our supplies and we slowly left the dock. The music of the sea washed over me as the sounds of the small waves began to hit the side of the boat. It was soothing and I was glad to get away from the hustle-bustle and stresses of life for a little while. The sun stood tall and bright, and without sunglasses it would have been hard to see. For a second, I forgot that I was in the boat with other people as the wind whipped against my face, but as soon as my uncle stopped the boat I was brought back to reality. “Candace you are going to be anchor boy! Get to the front of the boat and let down the anchor without the rope getting tangled,” Neal said. Candace apprehensively moved to the front of the boat. She was grasping the side and I knew she was scared she was going to fall in. Neal took out his meticulously-made crab lines and instructed each of us to tie the string to a part of the boat, so we could let the bait and weight hang over the edge without falling off into the water. “Gently lift up your line and try to see if you
can feel a tug,” Neal said. “Then carefully and slowly pull your line to the surface and if you see a crab eating the bait, grab the net, and quickly scoop the crab up before he falls off,” he instructed. I learned there were other ways to crab instead of just lowering a trap into the water. “This type of crabbing is called hand lining and it is the most difficult form of crabbing,” Neal said. It took skill and patience, but in the end when you saw the crab that you were pulling come up from the bottom of the sand it was so exciting. We moved the boat around to different spots trying to find the sweet spot where all the crabs were hiding, and at the last place we stopped, near the green marsh, we had success! Taylor was pulling crab after crab up from the sand below, each time screaming with excitement. One time she even caught two crabs on the same line and scooped them both into the net. For me using the net to scoop the crab up was the hardest part. Time after time I found the crabs falling back down to the bottom of the bay. However, after my uncle told me to hold the net further back from the crab in order not to scare it I had more success. Even though we caught crabs that were bigger than 4.5 inches we decided to let the crabs go. The point of the day wasn’t about catching crabs to eat, but to spend time together and have fun while sharing laughs. Crabbing should be an activity that everyone tries once in their life with people that they love. You really get to bond. The strange tan lines from wearing t-shirts in the sun will fade, but the memories will last forever.

ELL LADIES AND GENTLEMEN I’ve found it, the best possible way to start your day; on an eco-tour by Dak's Kayaks. On a sunshine-filled early morning under the 34th Street Bridge at the launching dock, sisters Allison and Caroline Hartman, along with new tour guide Shane Dooner, greeted me. These locals love being out on the water and sharing their knowledge of our local ecosystem with others. Allison, along with Shane, led the tour. Allison is a marine biology major at Stockton University. "My number one priority while giving a tour is safety, of course. But secondly, it's giving people a chance to see, not disturb, the wildlife,” said Allison. Allison taught us about the environment and she shared her knowledge with an excitement that rubbed off on all of us. “It’s important for people to know and enjoy what’s in their very own backyard,” Allison said. Before we headed out onto the intercoastal route Upland Thorofare, (around Crook Horn Creek) on the bay,

we were given a crash course on how to paddle our kayaks. Taking the tour with me that day was a visiting couple from Pennsylvania who were kayaking for the first time and two college students. This mini info session was a good refresher even for experienced kayakers and makes an eco-tour accessible for everyone, from a large family of new kayakers to an experienced person who wants to learn more about the local wildlife, or just about anyone who wants to add some adventure into their life. A Dak's eco-tour gets you up close and personal to the back bays of Ocean City and all the beautiful nature they have to offer. They also provide the kayak and lifejacket. "We also encourage people to BYOK (bring your own kayak) if you’re more comfortable with it,” Caroline said. As we entered the water we resembled cute yellow marshmallows in our bright colored life jackets, but hey, safety always comes first! Our tour that morning took two hours and was a beautiful and relaxing
experience. One of topics I learned most about was all the types of birds that inhabit Ocean City. Yes, there are other ones besides those pesky frenchfry-stealing seagulls, that are actually called laughing gulls. It was amazing to see herons, ospreys and willits (just to name a few) up close and learn about them from a knowledgable guide. Allison taught us how each bird gets their food, and their types of calls. I'm able to identify a few of the birds around the island now just by the sound they make. Growing up in Ocean City I thought I knew about most of the animals we have on the island, but this eco-tour opened my eyes to a whole new crew. Did you know that mussels are what keep the bay grass together? I sure didn’t! It is important that they do, and we got to see how they do it. Not only did we see the mussels up close... I also got to hold a mud snail. Who’s laughing now seagulls? Since the tide was on our side that day, we made a detour into a part of the water where the turtles like to hang out. Whoever started the rumor
Allison and Caroline Hartman
about turtles being slow was wrong. These guys were popping their heads in and out of the water so quickly if you blinked you would have missed them. They looked like little thumbs sticking out of the water. Interacting with the animals was really special, and enjoying the company of people you meet on the tour was just as awesome. And I got an arm work out free of charge. The fresh and salt water route we paddled on was so amazing I couldn’t help but think to myself, how lucky that I live in a place that has so much beauty to offer. It was also cool to get a different view of the bay from the usual aerial view that you get while going over the 34th Street Bridge. It’s stunning no matter where you look at it. As we finished up the tour and became land lovers again, there was a mutual agreement that we learned, enjoyed,
relaxed, and had a great time on our ecotour by Dak's. The tours can be anywhere from one person to more than 30. Dak's can be reached at 609-938-1185 or visit them at their store on 11th and Asbury.

Tee-rific!
Grab a ball, a club and a scorecard—we’re going mini golfing! Text and photos by Briana Duffy
GOLF IS A GAME THAT REQUIRES PATIENCE, accuracy and a little bit of luck. This was what I learned after I spent a day hitting five different miniature golf courses on the island. Mini golf is deceptively difficult. It looks like fun, oh look a pirate! And with its supercolorful, fun-loving, cartoonish decor, the course should be easy, no? No. Some of these courses are challenging enough to make Ricky Fowler grind his teeth. But fear not, dear readers, I have played each of these courses: Goofy Golf, Pirates of Golden Galleon, Pirate Island, Tee Time and Ocean City
62 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE
AUGUST 2016
Adventure Golf and have ranked them on a skill level of one to five clubs, one being beginner and five being the equivalent of a Master’s Champion. I've also given the time it took to play the course, the average par, and rated the theme of the course. So next time you head out with your family, you can choose to put on your hoody or your green jacket.
TEE TIME Address: 7th & Boardwalk Course Time: 40 minutes Par for Course: 40, average par 2 Skill: 2/5
This course ranked near the easiest skill level. Even with 15 moving obstacles, it was one of the easier ones I played that day. There were families in front and behind me, both with two young kids (think ages three and five). I felt like I was a little too old to be there, but it was still so fun! My favorite hole, my first hole in one of the season, was hole number two, an eight foot replica of Lucy the Elephant. Anyone that knows the Jersey Shore knows Lucy, the giant elephant in Margate. I got a kick out of an elephant being in the middle of the hole. You will too.
it was still fun for a group of 20 year olds.
Theme: Two clubs way up! Right next to Gillian's Wonderland Pier, Tee Time goes along with the theme of a childhood summer down the shore. The course was designed by the original owners, Dorothy and Richard about 40 years ago. Dorothy hand painted the characters seen around the course. A lot of love and time went into it. With bright colors, moving obstacles and a life-size replica of Fred and Wilma Flintstone in their foot mobile, the creativity at Tee Time is sure to excite and hold interest of those that aren’t into actual golfing.
PIRATE ISLAND
PIRATES OF THE GOLDEN GALLEON Address: 112 E 9th Street Course Time: 75 minutes Par for Course: 44, average par 2 Skill: 3/5 This course was all over the place with skill level. Brother and sister, Riley and Nathan Klennan battled it out as my family played. Nathan, the older brother finished the third hole with a birdie, while Riley bogeyed. It was clear that age was a factor in the outcome of their final score. Riley didn’t let this get her down, she was still smiling the whole time. Theme: Ahoy, mateys! Pirates of the Golden Galleon lets you turn in your sword for a club, as you take on 18 holes on a pirate ship. The course spills out onto the Boardwalk, looking as if an actual pirate’s ship had wrecked there. Plus there's a huge pirate overlooking the scene.
Address: 112 E 9th Street Course Time: 40 minutes Par for Course: 40, average par 2 Skill: 3/5 On the first hole, par 2, my dad got a hole in one, I got par and my mom’s golf ball ended up in the bushes – giving us an idea of what we were in for. For the most part, the holes looked straight forward, but there was an angle you couldn’t see from the tee. Whether it was in front of the hole, next to it or behind it, it made for a very competitive evening. The course was set up so it went back and forth between easy and harder holes. Theme: “Arrrgh!” said a little girl to her grandma behind us as she got the ball in the hole, in the spirit of the pirate theme. Pirate Island is right off of the Ninth Street bridge as you enter the island. Set nowhere near the Boardwalk, this was the calmest course. It also had an unbelievable view of the sunset. The pirate theme was outstanding – there was a lifelike ship in the middle of the course with a huge waterfall next to it, a wobbly bridge that you had to cross to get from one hole to the next and skeletons all over the course. They nailed the pirate theme.
Theme: Hole in one for creativity! This course has nearly every animal imaginable, so naturally my friends and I posed with a lion, snake and polar bear while waiting for the group in front of us to finish up. An amazing amount of detail went into designing such a cute and enjoyable course.
GOOFY GOLF Address: 920 Boardwalk Course Time: 45 minutes Par for Course: 42 Skill: 2/5 There were some holes that were tricky, like my favorite where you had to get a ball up the ramp to a monkey that was slam dunking a basketball. I know that sounds crazy, but it was so much fun. This course had a great youthful energy, there was a mix of brothers taunting one another and a family of three little girls behind me giggling and helping one another. Geared toward a younger age group,
OC ADVENTURE GOLF Address: Plymouth Place & Boardwalk Course Time: 60 minutes Par for Course: 40, average par 2 Skill: 3/5 "My ball went off the green every hole, but I never lost it! I liked that," said my sister Alyssa. She and her boyfriend, Brendan Loveland, came with me to the course and our competitive juices got flowing. The best part about this course was that the holes got harder as it went on. There was one with a water obstacle in the middle that you had to maneuver around. My sister’s ball went right in the water! Brendan started off the game with a hole in one, making us think this course would be a breeze. Forget that – Alyssa and I both got over five on two holes that were par twos. A fun and competitive course. Theme: This course is just like you’re teeing off in Augusta. I think it's more appealing for an older crowd. Kids might get bored and just want to go to a course with gorillas in a helicopter or a giant pirate in the middle. That said, I loved this course for its simplicity. Dave, the manager of the course, told me that it’s the only course on the island that is professionally landscaped, keeping the turf looking brand new. It's a competitive course, but the laid back energy and music from the next door waterpark made it very relaxing.

Out of the water, I am nothing.

y the 1970s surfing was a popular past time on America’s beaches. On the radio, the Jackson Five was singing, “I Want You Back” and people were flocking to see Jaws, the Godfather and Star Wars. Fashion was transforming from hippie chic to platform shoes and midi skirts. Surfing, too, was evolving from a beach pasttime to a competitive sport. Innovations helped further surfing’s popularity in Ocean City and around the world. “Howie Bosbyshell’s parents ran a laundromat on Atlantic Avenue down the block from the high school and Howie went out to California one summer and came back with this bungee cord thing tied to his surfboard. It became one of the very early leashes,” said Chuck Allison, a former OCBP lifeguard who has surfed in 23 countries and every coastal state except Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. “Now all of a sudden we could surf in front of the jetties where before if we lost our boards they would go bing, bing, bing down along the length of the rocks and we would spend the next day and a half fixing them.” Pat O’Neill, who was CEO of O’Neill, the well-known surf company, for 25 years, is credited with inventing the surf leash in 1971; his dad Jack O’Neill invented the wetsuit and opened the country’s first surf shop in California in 1952. Though wetsuits vastly improved the sport by allowing surfers to surf in colder waters and to stay in the water longer, leashes, according the Chuck, gave some people a false sense of confidence. “Everybody has a leash on their boards now, which puts some people out on the water who shouldn’t be there because they don’t have the water skills. It’s kind of frightening when the surf is kind of big and the kid gets out there and his leash breaks and he can’t swim in. That makes for a scary moment these days because I am too old to rescue these guys anymore,” Chuck said. For John Loeper, whose family has been coming to OC since 1904, the time before leashes meant having a buddy system. “You really had to have a buddy system going because on a huge day, way off shore, if you lost your board it was a long swim home so a lot of times it would help to have somebody near you to help you get back in,” said John.
Smaller Boards, Bigger Waves Along with the invention of leashes, there was another big change in the surfing world in the early ‘70s. Boards got much smaller, allowing surfers to do turns and maneuvers they weren’t able to do on longer, heavier boards. “You can do things on a wave now that no one would have even thought of in the ‘60s,” said Chuck. “The turns and the speed of maneuvers, the type of wave you would ride (have all changed).” The Ocean City Surfing Association that started in 1963 was still churning out weekly summer competitions and three big events through the year: the Spring Fling, the Polar Bear, and the Turkey Trot. By the end of the 1960s and early 1970s, though, the advent of the short boards caused a change in the competition according to Mike “Monk” Monroe, a towhead who grew up surfing the waves in OC and still works on the island as a landscaper. “(In) 1969 my interest in contests waned. That was the year long boards were evolving into shorter boards. You’d go into contests not knowing what the judges were looking for. Some people were looking for old school maneuvers and some were looking for more progressive maneuvers. I felt like I was performing for the judges, trying to do what I thought they wanted to see. I didn’t adapt well to that,” said Monk. For Sandy Ordille another OC native, shortboards and the ability to maneuver in the wave created a profession that allowed her to travel the world, make new friends and take on big waves. “In 1977 the first women’s pro contest was started by a senator from Hawaii. I went on the first year of the tour… but at that point, we’d all travel. We travelled with the Hawaiian team. Their parents would have us stay at their house and give us food. Then when the event came to our area, they would stay at our house,” said Sandy. “The big events where you really proved yourself were in Hawaii. When I got to Hawaii – I had never seen waves like that. I trained in California for a long time training for Hawaii. It’s kind of like a progression. You learn on the East Coast, then you come to the West Coast and you get the reef breaks. You learn to surf those kind of waves, then you go to Hawaii. That’s the pilgrimage. If you can conquer the big waves – you’re a true surfer. That’s what I did, I stayed at Sunset Beach and learned how to surf the big waves.”
Single Board Mentality In the late 1960s/early 1970s Dan Heritage from Vineland became one of the biggest surfboard distributors and manufacturers on the East Coast. “(Dan) was one of the very first surfboard manufacturers on the East Coast. He started manufacturing boards very early in the '60s, around 1962. The Heritage family moved (their factory) from Buena to the Woodbine Airport and manufactured boards, not just surfboards, also skateboards and bodyboards,” said Jim Hennessy a Florida native who married Dan’s daughter Tracy. “They had their own fin systems that they manufactured for the surfboards; that label was called Squirt. Dan was doing things just out of sheer vision and kind of understanding different ways you can ride waves. The skateboarding, the street surfing; it all connects. It’s what we call single board mentality. He was producing these things when very few people in the country, especially out here in the east, were doing that.” Dan was also making his own foam – a process known as “blowing.” “Foam is the interior material that a surf board is made out of. Most people would buy these foam blanks from a company like Clark Foam but Dan actually also produced his own foam which was very innovative on his part,” said Jim. In the early 1970s, Dan was selling to accounts, surf shops, up and down the coast line from Florida to New England. According to Jim, he was producing 200-300 boards a week at that time. In addition to selling them to other shops, Dan had his own shop, Little Waves Surf Shop in Sea Isle City. Around 1977, through a partnership, he opened Aqua Sport on West Avenue in OC. “We are still at the original location. It was a small store, probably a thousand square feet. Once we established that second location after several years the partnership was dissolved and we bought the entire rights for the whole location,” said Jim. “That was the birth of Heritage Surf and Sport.” Next time: Surfing’s wave of popularity continues in OC and around the world.

BOOK OF THE MONTH Pi in the Sky
Although being the Seventh Son of the Supreme Overlord of the Universe may sound glamorous, Joss can beg to differ. His older brothers get all the good jobs, such as bringing sunrises into being, or creating new species. Joss delivers pies. The pies, however, are not ordinary ones. They hold the universe together. How, no one really knows, but Joss does know that if he stopped delivering pies, there would be a really, really big mess. But all that Joss knows is thrown into chaos when a girl from Earth spots the Realms, where Joss lives. The punishment for this is clear. Earth is ripped out of space-time. Ordinarily, Joss could have cared less. He’s never been to Earth, why should this matter to him? But then he learns that his best friend’s parents were there, doing research for a top secret plan. And if his friends parent’s never existed… Needless to say, his best friend disappeared, replaced by none other than a spunky Earth girl named Annika. The one who looked through the telescope. Joss seems to have lost his best friend, until one of his Father’s council members gives him an alternative. Building Earth from scratch won’t be easy, but it’s his only chance to get his friend back. Welcome to a wonderful world from Wendy Mass, the author of The Candymakers and Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life. Put your thinking caps on, because Pi in the Sky will make you question the very universe around you. - Margaret Worchel

laugh at the stereotype of the librarian who constantly shushes patrons. Our staff loves to see the building come alive. From kids interacting at a puppet show to teens playing board games to seniors learning how to work with their digital photos, our library is always buzzing, and that’s how we like it.

Madison - A Friendly Cat!
Herman Roger Rabbit
Willie - Smart and Interactive!
Madison is a two year old DSH orange and white cat who is very friendly and outgoing. She was left behind after a winter rental to fend for herself. Madison was beyond ecstatic to finally be inside, have food and water and a comfy bed. She is now looking for her forever home.
Meet Herman Roger Rabbit. This young bunny was found in a parking lot he was probably dumped in after Easter. He is 100 percent litter trained and super social. He is living in a cage at the HSOC and it would be wonderful if he could go to a loving home.
Willie is a six to nine month old black labrador retriever, mixed with a basset hound and is extremely cute. He is still very much a puppy who will need all the basic puppy training. He is smart and interactive and very people oriented. He seems to like other dogs, wanting to run and play with them. He is absolutely a wonderful young dog waiting to find his forever family.

Health & Beauty by the Sea TIPS FOR SAFE SUMMER FUN Warm weather and sunny skies are great motivators to get outside and enjoy fun summer activities with friends and family. But make sure that you take adequate precautions to protect yourself from the common hazards of summer living that can spoil your outdoor fun.
from AtlantiCare Urgent Care Centers
AtlantiCare Urgent Care reminds you that having a great summer also includes keeping everyone in your family safe from accidental injuries.
In the Heat • • • •
In excessive heat, limit time outdoors. Try to stay indoors in air conditioning. Check on elderly neighbors and relatives who live alone. Wear light-colored and lightweight clothing on hot days to help keep your body cool. Keep your vehicle locked so it does not become a temptation for a child to play inside, exposing him or her to entrapment/ heat exposure.
In the Sun • • • •
Use sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher with UVA and UVB protection, even if it’s overcast outside. Reapply sunscreen every two hours and after sweating or swimming. Avoid direct sun exposure between 10am and 2pm, when skin damaging rays are strongest. Drink plenty of water, especially if you’re in the heat for long periods.
On the Water • • •
Only swim in lifeguard-protected waters. Teach children to follow lifeguards’ directions. Use the “buddy” system when swimming in pools or the ocean. Refrain from swimming alone. Do not dive into shallow water.

The Clothes Closet Helping Ocean City residents one piece of clothing at a time. Text and photos by Paige Benedetto
L
IFE is not always in our favor, everybody experiences hard times, and sometimes people need help. The actions of those who chip in are not taken for granted and are not forgotten. In Ocean City, there is a group of people who volunteer their time with the sole purpose of aiding others in the community when they are in need. Their service and dedication is remarkable, and these volunteers consistently act on their intention to help others. “Our mission is to clothe the poor of Ocean City,” said Anne Gallagher, a volunteer and one of three coordinators running Clothes Closet. The goal of this little building at 555 West Avenue is that simple. But the task of running Clothes Closet is anything but. Anne, Rissa Trofa, and Anita Keough are the three main coordinators working at Clothes Closet. Anne handles more of the behind-the-scenes work, while Rissa will typically be seen on the floor and at the front of the shop. Anita handles all of the volunteers. Clothes Closet is a non-profit organization run 100 percent by people 82 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE

donating their time to help the customers in need of clothing. Every piece of clothing or linen in the store comes from a donation and is free for anybody living in Ocean City. “As long as you live in Ocean City you are able to come to Clothes Closet. You need to have a proof of residency and that can be a piece of mail with your name and residence on it. Then you are allowed to come and take clothes. You are allowed to take 10 adult items and eight children items and you are allowed to come twice a month,” Rissa explained. Clothes Closet is a city building. Ocean City built Clothes Closet their current building and takes care of the upkeep, keeping it comfortable, welcoming, and private for the people in need. While mostly all of the volunteers come from churches within Ocean City (Clothes Closet is run by the Ecumenical Council), they are always looking for more volunteers. “No matter what your domination is you can volunteer,” Anne said. The people who are willing to give their time and love to Clothes Closet is one of
the reasons it's able to run so smoothly and benefit the city so well. Volunteer Regina Ralston takes care of all of the signs you see posted in Clothes Closet. Karen Holder and her daughters come in over the weekend, when the shop is closed, and make sure everything is in order and organized for Monday morning at 10am when they open up again. Clothes Closet even donates to other countries in need when there is devastation. Volunteers Carol and Will Evans take the clothes from Clothes Closet to the Rescue Mission when there is a need. This can be a huge help when a country is suffering from a natural disaster and everybody has lost everything. Clothes Closet has articles of clothing for every season, and as the weather changes the garments in the store change as well. Any donation is always welcome. “The largest donation of the year comes from the Ocean City Board of Relators. They collect winter coats and clothing,” Anne said. “We also take and receive monetary donations from residents and with that money we buy school bags, underwear, socks and rain boots for the

children going back to school. We make sure every child has these things when they return to school,” Anne said. Anne and Rissa both say Clothes Closet is their passion. They donate their time because they truly want to help. Rissa wishes she could have given her younger self one piece of advice after what she has learned from working at Clothes Closet. “I would tell myself to find something that you love to do,” Rissa said. She is grateful to now have found Clothes Closet. “I feel blessed in my life and I want to give back to my community,” Rissa said. “I enjoy working with other people who are like minded and who want to give back,” she said. Clothes Closet has so many volunteers that you only need to volunteer once
a month, but you are allowed to volunteer as often as you want. Volunteering strengthens communities and brings people together. Giving back helps people to learn about themselves while benefitting people in need and creating a better community for everybody living there. After spending time with Anne, Rissa, and some of the other volunteers from Clothes Closet, I was reminded of a famous quote by the actor Denzel Washington – “At the end of the day, it’s not about what you have or even what you’ve accomplished. It’s about what you’ve done with those accomplishments. It’s about who you’ve lifted up, who you’ve made better. It’s about what you’ve given back.” 83
