About This Book
By BILL AND STEF GODFREY, GONE NATIVE COMMUNICATIONS, INC.
W
E’RE five years old this year! Yay! Let’s all put on our party hats and play pin the tail on the donkey. Okay, maybe not, but as we write this (at 3am in February), we do feel like celebrating. Five years of publishing Ocean City’s most beautiful guidebook is an achievement worth cheering. And we wouldn’t be celebrating our milestone without a couple people we’d like to thank now. The big reason we’ve turned five is YOU, our glorious readers who we appreciate very much. We love taking your photos as you enjoy America’s Greatest Family Resort. Because Ocean City, NJ is you, your friends and your family. Enjoy this book in your hotel room or rental or better yet, buy a
copy and bring it home so you can “be in OC” anytime you want just by turning the pages. It’s like a mind vacation for $10. Visit www. welcometooceancity.net to order a copy. The copy you’re reading now needs to stay put so others can read it, too. Share and share alike. The other BIG reason we are turning five this year is the awesome advertisers who make this book possible. Ocean City is fabulous, we
all know this, and a major reason why is all the wonderful businesses on the island. Just think, would your trip be as great without the amazing dinners out or the ice cream on the Boards or that gorgeous dress you bought from that Downtown boutique? Exactly. There are tons of places to go in OC just waiting for you. Who knows; maybe this year you’ll find a new, favorite must-have place. So, please visit the shops, restaurants, service businesses and activities you see on these cool pages. Let them know you found them in this book. That will make them happy and us happy and all that happiness will spread. Now let’s conclude this big love fest by having a big piece of cake. Make a wish and be sure to enjoy the book. Happy vacation!

Welcome to Ocean City! roll down the windows, feel the salt air... you’re on island time now
Y
OU know the moment on your drive to Ocean City when the scent of salt air permeates the car windows and seeps in? It’s a universal point on every OC visitor’s ride. When it happens, you take a deep breath and smile, knowing the shore isn’t that far off now. The shore, to OC goers, is eight miles of wellkept beaches, the two and a half mile Boardwalk, the Downtown shopping district, the inviting bay where you can play all day on the water, plus all the unique neighborhoods throughout the island. Families from all over the country flock to Ocean City in the summer months to sit on her shore, look at her ocean, feel the warm breeze in their hair and most of all, relax and build memories together. Ocean City receives accolades just about every year for having one of the best beaches in America. It’s no surprise then that the city takes pride in keeping the beaches clean, safe and ready for your chairs and umbrellas and sand castles day after day. There is a team of folks working to make this happen, so next time you walk onto the sandy expanse, you can thank the city workers.

If you’re looking for a first-class vacation, Ocean City has everything – beaches, Boardwalk, okay we mentioned that, big-city shopping, outstanding dining options, a municipal airport, golf course, recreational fields, special events, family festivities... we’re talking endless possibilities here. Together with the newly-renovated Community Center (housing the Arts Center, Historical Museum, Aquatic and Fitness Center, and Free Public Library), there’s the famed Music Pier (home of the Ocean City Pops), the Bayside Center and more. Whether you’re here for a day, the week, or perhaps the rest of your life, we’ve got plenty for you to do. Let’s start at the tip of the Atlantic. Ocean City has some of the best beaches in the world – miles of soft clean sand from one end of the island to the other. Put on your explorer hat and take a beach walk. They are offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the summer. See the events list on page 6. Guarding these beaches is the Ocean City Beach Patrol, one of the oldest in the country. Follow their instructions and remember to always SWIM NEAR A GUARD and listen for their whistle.
Move inland a few feet and you’ll come across the Ocean City Boardwalk, a two-and-a-half mile stretch lined with shops and restaurants of every kind, movie theatres, amusement rides, miniature golf courses and a water park like no other. When it comes to shopping, Ocean City has what you need. Asbury Avenue and the Downtown Shopping District from 6th to 11th Streets is a destination spot. Walk the Downtown mile... from 6th to 11th and back equals one mile, so lace up and exercise while you shop. Our Historic Downtown is a collection of boutiques, specialty stores and restaurants. OC retailers put their heart and soul into their businesses. And that makes for a top-notch retail experience all year round. Mixed in are great restaurants and service providers along a beautiful street lined with flowers and filled with smiling people. There are also a ton of special events in the Downtown during the year including Funtastic Tuesdays, holiday shopping days and a lot more. See page 68 for more info on the Downtown, between the beach and the bay on Asbury. Continuing toward the west is what the locals refer to simply as “the bay” – Peck Bay and the
Left: Surfin’ safari eat your heart out. All year long, surfers come to Ocean City to ride the waves. Above, buy a vowel! It’s the Miss New Jersey Parade that happens in June every summer on the Boardwalk.
Great Egg Harbor Bay – where you’ll find every water sport imaginable, including kayaking, sailing, boating, fishing, crabbing, SUP, and more. There are great opportunities to see pristine eco-systems up close and personal. Aquatic & Fitness Center The Center is a multi-faceted facility that encourages people of all ages and fitness levels to participate in programs that promote good health. In other words, it’s a great place to workout. And it’s newly renovated! The Center has strength training and cardiovascular equipment; a 25-meter saltwater pool; a studio for aerobics, yoga, and pilates; racquetball; babysitting; and youth programming spaces. Located in the Community Center; 609-398-6900. Ocean City Historical Museum OCHM depicts early Ocean City’s history with period room displays and vintage clothing, a large display of old Ocean City photographs and postcards, dolls and toys. Displays of items from the city’s past will delight visitors. The Sindia Room features a scale model of Ocean City’s most famous shipwreck and a lighted eight-by-eight-foot stained glass window showing the Sindia under sail. Located in the Community Center; 609-399-1801.
The Ocean City Free Public Library The Ocean City Library strives to be the “intellectual, social and cultural heart of our community, providing a place to go for information, literacy and cultural resources, in a comfortable, attractive and convenient environment.” A tall order no doubt, but once you visit the library, you’ll understand the staff ’s unending commitment to live up to this lofty goal. Of course you can borrow books at the library, but there’s more than that. The library has movies to entertain you, newspapers to inform you, programs and workshops to enlighten you. And more. 609-399-2434. Ocean City Municipal Golf Course Ocean City has a public, 12-hole, par three golf course. The golf course is a great place to go in the morning before hitting the beach, after a beach day to unwind or as a change of pace from the sand and sea. Set in the scenic meadows of the bay area, the golf course provides a beautiful and fun way to spend a few hours of the day in Ocean City. All ages are welcome, but children under 12 years old must be accompanied by a parent. To play, each person must have their own golf bag. Clubs are available for rental as well as hand carts and riding carts. Located at Bay Avenue at 26th Street.
Summer hours are 6am to 7pm. Winter hours are 8am to 4pm. The golf course has a pro shop and memberships are available. Call 609-399-1315. Ocean City Pops Every year, the Ocean City Pops bring internationally-renowned guest performers to the stage at the Music Pier. oceancitypops.com. Community Art Projects CAP keeps the island decorated in fun, lovely art work that comes up when you least expect it. Driving down Bay Avenue? See if you can find BonapART, the larger-than-life dog sculpture. CAP’s work is dotted all over Ocean City thanks to a group of dedicated citizens. communityartprojects.com. Ocean City Theatre Company The OCTC works with the Ocean City Pops orchestra to put on wonderful fully-staged Broadway-style productions. Every summer there are three to five performances under the direction of Michael Hartman. OCTC also runs a recreation program to bring the theatre to young children who love the arts. oceancitytheatrecompany.com.

HE NEW 9TH STREET CAUSEWAY CONNECTING OCEAN CITY AND SOMERS POINT IS NEARING completion with an end date of October 2012 planned. If you enter the island that way, you’ll notice the new span immediately. With its tall bridges, the new structure replaces the old drawbridges and brings an ocean view to all island-bound drivers. Here’s a look back to the bridge of old. Remember?

R
AY Zaleski’s favorite place in OC is for the birds. Literally. It’s the Stainton Wildlife Refuge on Bay Avenue. Never heard of it? Not many have, but if Ray has his way, the refuge will be the spot for locals and tourists to catch a glimpse of the wildlife that calls our island home. Ray is originally from Conshohocken, PA and vacationed here with his wife Mary while his children Karen and Kevin were growing up. Now he lives in his southend condo and spends his days capturing OC’s most beautiful asset – its wildlife. The beauty and habits of the birds are what Ray finds most interesting – especially their going south as far away as South America. “Some stay here for the winter; that’s why I feed them. And when the migrators come back, some stop by my bird feeder. Some birds I’ve never seen before,” Ray said. “For instance there was a Great Blue Heron here in February. They should be in South America, also Cormorant,” said Ray. To attract birds to your property, keep your bird feeder full and also have water available, according to Ray. This summer, if you pull off on Bay Avenue and climb to the top of the Wildlife Refuge platform, and see someone with a camera, say hey. It’s probably Ray.

THE REAL
Ocean City BY GORDON C. McCLENNEN
E
VERY year, the week be-
fore Labor Day, I pack up my family in the mini-van
with our kid’s extracurricular activities prominently pasted on the back bumper
(karate, ballet and soccer), its seats full of Cheerio dust
and its carpets fully permeated with the dirt from thousands of tiny footprints, and take them to Ocean City.
The real Ocean City. Not the fake one in Maryland. Maybe the other one was incorporated four years before we were, but I maintain those extra four years weren’t kind to them. They don’t have Manco and Manco’s or Jilly’s. So there! That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. The fact is, my family and I really like the beach. A lot. We snuggle up in a nice, but small, condominium down at the very southern end of the city, near the 58th Street pier, which is far enough from the busy hustle-bustle of the summertime Boardwalk to avoid the noise, but close enough to get to it when we need funnel cakes (a need that comes up surprisingly often in one week). The beauty of beach living is the casual life it embodies. I can and will go days without ever putting on shoes. Lounging around is not only allowed, it’s encouraged. You don’t even need to change your clothes, if you so desire (I don’t recommend this). People simply walk around in their swimsuits everywhere (although some of them should probably think twice about this custom). Not something you’d see in New York City or Philadelphia. I’d be mighty surprised if I saw a girl

in a bikini walk into a CVS in Philly. But it happens all the time in OCNJ. Our condo is right across the street from the beach. A mere 25 feet, and we’re there. Ballet dancers can Grand Jeté farther than that (though not when there are cars driving by). We always go with our shovels and buckets the first time, with grandiose ideas of the massive castle we’re going to build. It’s always just me and my kids Caitlyn and Sean doing the grunt work, while my wife Dori lounges nearby with a book. Several times we have to ask her to move back a couple dozen feet, because we expect she’ll soon be in the path of our construction. She just gives us a knowing look and never moves. Eventually the kids get tired of being bossed around by me, and run off to play in the water or chase seagulls. I press on, positive that this is the year my castle will be more than just a pile of sand and a few malformed bucket castings. Always, in my head, I picture myself as the next Michelangelo of sand castles, but in reality I’m more of a finger painter. With runny paints. Even virtuoso sand castle builders tire of sand castle artistry, and I eventually hit the water with my kids. I’m really not a coordinated person, especially in the water. I watch the surfers out past the pier on their surfboards, lazily grabbing a wave and surfing in as easily as I might grab an escalator and ascend to the menswear department. They look so cool and coordinated, as well as entertained, riding on their boards, falling with grace at the end. Luckily, a whole amateur sport has arisen to accommodate water-buffoons like me. It’s called “Boogie Boarding” (and has nothing to do with dancing, thankfully). My kids are a great deal better at it than I am. All you do is lay on a miniature styrofoam surf board, and ride the next wave that comes along. One minute I’ll be talking to my offspring beside me, the next they’ll be up on the shore, 50 feet away, and I’ll be rolling in an unexpected wave, grabbing frantically for my hat and sunglasses which had been knocked off in my latest tumble. All in all, great fun. After a day of digging in the sand under the hot sun, being knocked over by waves and chasing runaway children, there’s nothing better than hitting the Boardwalk for a relaxing walk, soothed by a warm evening breeze. Calories only have half the effect on the Boardwalk as they do anywhere else. Trust me on this.
Above, Caitlyn, 11, and Sean McClennen, 8, take a walk on the beach at the southend of the island. Below, Gordon McClennen finishing up a run from 59th Street to 11th Street and back. Photos by Dori McClennen. Why else would they sell so much junk food there? As I mentioned previously, our family favorite is funnel cake. It’s a main staple for our week at the shore. That and George’s ice cream. Oh, and Shriver’s fudge. And salt water taffy. And fries. And deep-fried oreos. All laid out perfectly along the Boardwalk; a buffet of treats as you walk along. I guess we don’t really get much nutrition when we’re down there. I suppose we should work on that. Maybe someone will open a broccoli bar where Atlantic Books used to be. The whole week is dedicated as “family time.” But there is still one selfish indulgence that I reserve for myself alone. I run. My absolute favorite time to run is right before dawn. Yes, it’s vacation, but the heck with sleeping! I can do that next week and be late for work every day. I prefer to coordinate my runs so I have a good view of the sun when it rises over the ocean. Unfortunately, at
the end of August, this means getting up before 5:30am (“am” standing for “Already Morning?”) and lugging myself to my running location. I often run on the packed beach sand right in front of our condo, but my favorite place to run is the empty Boardwalk. One end to the other and back. Up and back is five miles. They even conveniently mark out every quarter mile, for those of us OCD enough to care how far we’ve gone. Running past the closed and shuttered stores, watching the brilliant sliver of sun peek over the ocean and inch its way up into the sky, rhythmically pounding the boards with my Asics, listening to the sound of the waves while breathing in the salty air, I only have one thought on my mind: I’m burning enough calories to eat another funnel cake. Gordon C. McClennen is a freelance writer from Media, PA, but aspires to be a sand castle champion some day.

Y FAVORITE MEMORY OF Ocean City is sailing in the bay with my grandparents. My grandparents lived on the lagoon on Leyte Lane, not far from us. My grandfather, Clyde Ellis, had a sailboat, and whenever we could, he would take me out sailing in the bay and around the lagoons. Some of the lagoons were not even built yet. My grandmother, Mildred Ellis, would go too, whenever she wasn’t working at Stainton’s Department Store. She was Mr. Stainton’s secretary. Another great memory of mine is riding bikes on the Boardwalk with my grandfather. He used to ride his bike everyday on the Boardwalk. Sandra Kooker, Ocean City Free Public Library.
Boardwalk. My favorite memory was enduring the dud of Hurricane Charley in 1986. My family was determined to not let it impact our vacation whilst the majority of the other people in Ocean City evacuated. I recall snuggling in to my parents’ bed, nervous as to what the night would bring. In the morning when we realized that the city had been spared, we walked the Boardwalk and watched the adventurous surfers brave the huge waves. I so enjoyed the quiet that ensued in the normally busy town. Perhaps that’s why I’ve returned to live here after all these years. The off season is so quiet and peaceful; a nice juxtaposition to all of the excitement of summer. Raoul Caes, co-owner, Pure Tacos.
ITH MY OLDER BROTHER and me kicking and punching each other in the back seat, my mom and dad would brave the occasional trip to Atlantic City and other shore towns, where my dad scouted local businesses for sales opportunities, while my mom looked up from her book just long enough to make sure that we boys didn’t murder one another on the beach. One time we continued on to Ocean City, where we had never been. My dad, in the hardware business, the trimmings business, the whatever-putsfood-on-the-table business, checked out stores on the Avenue. The rest of us changed in one of the bath houses, and then I promptly got lost. Finding myself suddenly alone brought tears to my eyes as my brother’s punches could not. A kind family brought me to the lifeguard stand, where one of the guards bought me an ice cream. They let me wear a whistle, too. Soon my mom found me sitting on the stand, happy and smiling, and she never tired of telling everyone – even my brother – of how nice people had been. Imagine... ice cream! A whistle around my neck! There was no business for my dad, however, so we didn’t come back to OC for another couple of years. But when we did, right out of the bath house – whoosh – my brother took off in one direction to get lost and me in another. Sam Koperwas, Henry’s Jewelry.

Y FAVORITE MEMORY OF Ocean City as a child is getting my first job at Gillian’s Wonderland Pier. I enjoyed working there every summer through High School. It was a great place to work… especially for my first job! I’m sure it was the most fun place to work in the entire world and I met so many nice people. Many I still see on a regular basis. Just think, getting your first job on the Ocean City Boardwalk! I am so thankful for my parents who encouraged me to do what I wanted, for the experience, and for the lessons I learned in Ocean City. ITTING ON THE DOCK OF THE bay at our family home watching Night in Venice was so much fun! It was later then and all of the boats were decorated with lights. My memories are that the boats were smaller and it was like you could reach out and touch them and some of the people in the boat parade threw us kids candy on our dock! It was a wonderful, magical night that our family spent together before we had all moved down here. Wendy Moyle, City of Ocean City.

OING WITH MY SISTER AND brothers to get penny candy on the Boardwalk. We’d fill our plastic bowls with one and two-cent candy. I also have fond memories of playing rec softball and Mike Allegretto driving us to our games in the city jitney. Marcia Shallcross, Downtown Ocean City.
M
Y VIVID OCEAN CITY memory is of surfing after a passing storm in the evening off of 8th Street beach when I was a teenager. Only a few surfers, all of which are friends, are strewn across the A-frame waves between the 7th Street jetty and the Music Pier. The only sounds are of the back spray from the light offshore breeze, the rolling frothy foam, along with an increasing hum from the Boardwalk as the family pedestrian traffic builds and the rides at Wonderland Pier operate steadily. The golden orange glow of the setting sun behind the skyline and the cotton candy clouds glisten across the ocean. I can almost smell the aroma of Johnson’s Popcorn and Manco & Manco’s pizza like it was the 4th of July. Patrick Gill, TackleDirect.
M
Y PARENTS HAD A STORE on the Boardwalk from the summer I was born, so I literally grew up on the Ocean City boards. My dad called my brother and me Boardwalk brats and I think it may have been just about the most perfect childhood ever. My favorite memory of those early years was our typical summer day. My brother and I would spend the day on the beach and then we would return to the store. My mom made the cutest little apartment in the back of the store so she could bathe us, feed us dinner and put us to bed. My parents would then work until midnight, close the store and take us home. Only to return the next morning at 10am to start all over again. The boardwalk life was wonderful! Christine Ross, owner KB’s Kettle Korn.
W
HEN I WAS A YOUNG teenager, the Music Pier used to have teen dances every Thursday night throughout the summer. It used to get so packed with locals and kids in town for the entire summer. I made a ton of friends then and will never forget those days. There was also a show called Dance Party USA that was filmed on the beach outside the Music Pier for young adults. We would sneak in and then watch TV later on to see if we saw ourselves. Jody Levchuck, owner Jilly’s family of stores.

THE Repici family has served up slices of nostalgia and orders of old-school for two generations now. The Chatterbox is an Ocean City icon – a link to simpler times, carefree vibes and yummy food of days gone by – and the Repicis treat this Ocean City treasure with the care it deserves.
I remember eating at The Chatterbox as a kid – don’t you? Go ahead, take your kids and let
them start making their own Ocean City memories. The food is great and The Chatterbox has no trouble handling big parties (there’s an extra dining room). The Chatterbox has something for everybody – simply prepared and simply delicious, good old-fashioned American fare. Try the burgers, or a savory dinner entrée, including butterfly shrimp, sea scallops, flounder, crabcakes and a catch of the day. They also serve T-bone steaks, pork chops, raviolis, chicken parm, ham steak with pineapple and a big favorite – liver and onions. And the desserts are heavenly. The Chatterbox also serves breakfast at 7am with bagels, eggs, pancakes, waffles and all kinds of yummy stuff. For lunch, there are wraps, clubs, salads, buffalo wings – everything you’d expect from a classic American restaurant. Plus that ultimate American favorite – milkshakes.

A SIMPLE, bright menu, pleasant staff and dedication to tasteful dishes are a few of the ingredients that go into a lovely meal at Cousin’s. Chef Bill McGinnity brings years of experience to the kitchen and he’s still as passionate as ever about his food.
You’ll taste the commitment to quality right away at Cousin’s. The ingredients are fresh, the
preparation is professional, the presentation is inspired and the food is tasty. Fanatical attention to detail? Maybe. But that’s a good thing for chefs. And the restaurant is Ocean City-cute. The dining room is simple and the outside tables are great for those warm summer nights. Cousin’s also does a mean take out. You can select from their normal restaurant menu or go for the family-sized portions if you’ve got a big crew to feed. Cousin’s is also one of the premier on- and off-site caterers in the region. LIGHTS, Camera, Action! The story of Del’s Oceanside Grill is made for Hollywood. Back in the day – 1954 actually – Joe Del’s mom and dad opened a small mom-and-pop sandwich shop in Audubon, NJ, where they served up steak sandwiches and sold penny candy. In 1965 they made THE MOVE, came to Ocean City and set up shop on the Boardwalk. Now you’re in OC hanging on the Boards, looking for a place to sit, eat a great meal and still
have some money left over. Look no further than Del’s – it’s an OC landmark – the classic steaks and burgers are still family favorites, but now there’s homemade crabcakes, fresh seafood platters and other new menu items. Go ahead, eat where the locals eat! Looking for something light, but afraid you’re going to get rabbit food? No worries. Del’s elevates salad to a new level so you’ll be satisfied and impressed. Need proof ? The summer spinach salad and buffalo chicken salad are just two of the options. Brought the kids to America’s Greatest Family Resort? Of course you did. And Joe Del is ready for you with a full kids menu and a well-trained, friendly staff. The dining room is bright, colorful and perfect for people watching.

HE PUKO’A kani ‘aina. That’s Hawaiian for “the Hula Restaurant only gets better every year.” Ocean City locals are really happy that Chef Dave Rihl travelled to Hawaii and brought back his special take on Hawaiian cuisine to Ocean City. Dave’s Hawaiian cuisine – based on the 50th state’s plate lunch concept – is unique for Ocean
City, but one bite of the homemade tropical vinaigrette and you’ll know why Hula had to expand its operation a few years back. Dave’s recipe of the freshest seafood and produce, mixed with a generous dash of Hawaiian flair and a whole lot of love, makes this restaurant something truly special. Dave’s dishes are prepared using only the best ingredients (you’ll taste this immediately) and served with rice and a salad – not your everyday Boardwalk fare. And the handmade sauces take everything up a notch – you should really take some home (or order a few bottles online). Ample outside seating is another reason Hula will become one of your favorite dining spots in Ocean City. Inside, everything’s clean and fresh with a casual Hawaiian decor. And the staff is a cute and charming bunch.

JAY Graham is a man on a mission. And that mission is to spread yummy, delicious Maryland-style crabcake love all over the OC – with a side of Old Bay fries. And you need to feel the love. You’ll love the Crabshack! First off, the crabcakes are sublime. The man makes a mean
crabcake. And second, it’s just a cool little place. It’s the kind of eatery you expect in Ocean City – down-home, fun, laid back, friendly – that’s Jay’s. Back to the crabcakes – they’re made using a regional/family recipe from Jay’s Maryland home town. They’re honest-to-goodness Chesapeake-style crabcakes with great taste. Jay keeps it all simple – just really fresh seafood. Try the fish taco – it will just suck you in. Put a little sriracha sauce on it... yum. Got someone in your crowd who doesn’t like seafood? Don’t cast them aside – take them to Jay’s. There’s plenty to keep them happy, including great chicken and vegetarian dishes. Bring the kids too – they’ll like the popcorn shrimp. Smiling service, cute presentation – Jay’s has the works complete with a cool, casual vibe. The counter’s a great place to seat the kids and it’s clean – very important. You can have pizza and burgers the other 51 weeks of the year. Go to Jay’s. You’ll like it.

STRAWBERRY-stuffed french toast? You had me at hello. That little spin on tradition is the norm at OC Surf Café, where the decor is sunny and the cuisine is surfinspired. You don’t have to surf to appreciate the surf-inspired menu at OC Surf Café. First off, it’s
really fresh. You can see it when your order arrives at your table. The strawberries are red, the pancakes are golden brown, and the fish tacos melt in your mouth. The menu at OC Surf was inspired by a love for the sun, sand and surf and an active, outdoor lifestyle. The café serves dishes that work for the whole family. Omelettes, crispy bacon, fresh fruit, Harry and Beans locally-roasted coffee (yum!) and more for breakfast. Salads, tacos and sandwiches for lunch. The expanded menu includes eggs benedict, crabcake burrito, gourmet omelettes, bruschetta burgers, and much more. The décor is bright, tropical and happy and the service is always friendly and prompt.

UBPH is consistently voted “Best of the Shore” by major media outlets across the region. ‘Nuff said. Why? We think it’s in part because the staff at UBPH is one of the most experienced in town and they know their stuff. For over 50 years Uncle Bill’s has been serving the Jersey Shore’s favorite breakfasts. It’s
a tradition! Consistency is the key at UBPH. The food is always prepared with the same quality ingredients and served piping hot. And the waitresses still wear the iconic white uniforms. You’ll always get a great meal at UBPH. UBPH serves dinner, too (in summer from 5-10pm every night from mid-June to Labor Day at the 40th Street location). The 21st Street location is open year round and features daily breakfast and lunch specials. Other locations; Strathmere (right over the 55th Street bridge, open from 7am-1pm, often with a much shorter wait). UNCLE Bill serves up some great pancakes, this is true. And the only thing that could match those pancakes is the ice cream dished out by Aunt Betty. Let’s start with Aunt Betty’s quality Hershey’s ice cream – smooth and creamy in a ton of
different flavors. Serving both hard and soft ice cream and Italian Ice, there’s something here to please everyone, even your dog. Plus you get almost anything you want to top it off. Now picture that ice cream in one of Aunt Betty’s famous sundaes, which are smooth, creamy and huge! Or wrap that yummy ice cream in an Uncle Bill’s waffle and you’re in paradise. All that yummy can be found in two spots on the island. Aunt Betty’s two locations are next to Uncle Bill’s Pancake House. At 21st and Asbury, kick back and relax in a tropical-themed oasis, listen to island music and get into the vacation vibe. At 40th Street you can get ice cream all day, and at night there’s waitress service inside the dining room. So sit, scoop, and enjoy! DRIVE across the new 9th Street Bridge (it’s lovely, isn’t it?), keep going until you hit the Boardwalk and that’s where you’ll find one of Ocean City’s tastiest icons: Shriver’s Salt Water Taffy and Fudge. Not only is Shriver’s one the oldest businesses on the Boardwalk – boasting 114 years in
2012 since first opened by William Shriver in 1898 as a restaurant, candy and ice cream store – but it’s also one of the tastiest and fun-filled places on the Boardwalk. If you like the sweeter things in life – things like salt water taffy, fudge, macaroons, chocolate, mint rolls, jams, jellies and other fine confections – then you’re going to LOVE Shriver’s. Shriver’s is a retail store and working factory where you can shop the largest selection of candy in Ocean City while watching the production of salt water taffy, fudge and chocolateenrobed candies through a large viewing window. You find more eye candy – literally – in their window where you’ll see candied and gourmet apples, chocolate strawberries and other fine confections being made. Bring the kids; it’s mesmerizing.

TAFFY Mr. Taffy is Shriver’s mascot who’s become a beloved attraction for all ages. In the evenings he can be found at the store having his picture taken with families. “The Birth of Mr. Taffy” is a children’s book that tells the tale of how Mr. Taffy came to be.
good things to know TO ANSWER your question: no, there’s actually no salt water in salt water taffy. The name originated around 1890 after the ocean swept into a man’s taffy shop in Atlantic City. Ocean City didn’t originate the name, we just made the taffy better.

SHRIVER’S Gelato & Sorbets is your place on the Ocean City Boardwalk for delicious Gelato! Do you know what Gelato is? Well, as you can see from that delicious cone at the right, Gelato is kind of like ice cream. So why not call it ice cream? Well, because it’s better! While the characteristics of Gelato are similar to traditional ice cream, they’re not the same. Gelato
is made with whole milk as opposed to cream so it has less butterfat than traditional ice cream, which makes it lower in calories. In Gelato there is less air – up to half – creating a dense and flavorful product. However, as dense as Gelato is, it remains soft and creamy. Shriver’s Gelato is kept at a constant temperature, allowing the Gelato to keep the perfect “not too soft – not too hard” consistency. Gelato doesn’t just have to be served in a cup or cone! They’ve got Gelato Smoothies and Milkshakes, perfect to cool you down on a hot summer’s day. There’s Gelato Cake, a delicious treat perfect for parties and events, that can serve between six and eight people. Just give them 24 hours, and they’ll make the best frozen treat you’ve ever had for your next entertainment event. One of the most appealing aspects of Gelato is its flavor selection. Flavors like Vanilla, Strawberry and Chocolate are always available, but the nature of true Italian Gelato is to produce original flavors that aren’t typical of ice cream, such as ginger, watermelon or black pepper. And the best part is free samples are encouraged! And don’t forget the coffee bar and self-serve coffee – perfect any time of
