From the Editor What kind of beach goer are you? Are you a minimalist – packing a book, phone and chair down to the ocean? Or are you a rat packer?
Do you bring chairs, books, mags, beach towels, footballs, baseballs, paddleball, last year's receipts for all said items, and that turkey sandwich you made earlier? Or are you somewhere in between? I wish I was a minimalist (and I actually got to be one on Mother's Day thanks to my awesome husband), but most of the time I surpass rat packer to full on hoarder. Kisses to whoever invented that big wheel beach cart. When you have three kids – you need to bring the entire house with you down to the sand, no? What if someone needs sunscreen and the first two bottles get jammed?! Better bring the spare hats too, and sweatshirts in case of a cold front! A big highlight of my time spent on the beach is people watching. I love looking at the fun being had, the beach set ups that rival some hotels I've stayed in, and nearby families enjoying their time together with the sound of the waves lending a soundtrack to my beach reality show. Usually, it doesn't take long for the families nearby to strike up a conversation, the kids to share toys, and good cheer and laughter to spread between us. It's like we've become instant neighbors, settling into the same block; A camaraderie forged in the sand. At the Miss New Jersey parade in mid-June, I overheard a couple on the Boardwalk exclaim, "there's always something fun going on in Ocean City!," as they got caught unawares of the parade happening in front of them. Indeed there is always something fun going on here whether it's a parade that tickles your fancy or a long bike ride, or a touch tank filled with sea creatures you can not only see but feel(!) Flip through the pages (there's 92 of them this month!) to find fun stories, events, and inspiring people, places and photos. Email me at editor@ocnjmagazine.com to discuss rat packing, salt water soundtracks, or anything Ocean City. 'Til next time cool kids,

FACEBOOK FAN OF THE MONTH Cheryl Dill MY PERFECT DAY in Ocean City starts as I wake to the sounds of the seagulls and the smell of ocean air. I head to the front porch and read a book. It's so peaceful in the morning; my favorite part of the day. After everyone gets up we bike to Uncle Bill's for stuffed French toast. Afterward, we work off all those calories by riding back to the house. We get an order of Monkey Bread, a new Manco and Manco or Ocean City puzzle, a bag of roasted peanuts and a bucket of Johnson's Popcorn. All those snacks are for munching during the week. We stop in and check out the new jewelry at Henry's and the boys head to the arcade for some video games. We take our picture at the famous flip flops sign and then head back to the house. After our breakfast settles, we get all the gear and head for the beach, finding our spot next to the lifeguard stand. The lifeguards probably don't know who we are, but we know them. We've been going to the same beach for years. After playing in the water, digging in the sand and catching some rays, we head back to the house. Everyone is hungry again, so we order a pie from Manco and Manco and pick up an order of Curly's regular cut fries. I head back out on the front porch to people watch and read. When it's dinner time we head up to the boards to Gillian's so the boys can go on the roller coaster and the log flume, then head to Clancy's to eat. Finally, it's time for ice cream. Nick and Rob head to Shrivers for Gelato while Ryan and I head for Kohr Bros. for some soft serve with jimmies, not sprinkles! Back home, we watch the lights on the ferris wheel at Gillian's. I make myself a cocktail and hang out on the front porch. After a little while, I head back inside and fall asleep to the sounds of the seashore. In a few hours we do it all over again. Some days we'll do different things, like go to the water park or walk Asbury Avenue, but the beginning and end of the days will always be the same. They are my most favorite parts of the day.

OR JOE Bogle and the folks at The Original Fudge Kitchen, it’s about more than just delicious fudge, it’s about the entire chocolate-covered, fudgewhipping, memory-provoking, sugarhigh-inducing experience. “We want everyone who comes in here to feel like our guest,” said Brian Corbett, manager and fudge-maker extraordinaire at the Ocean City store at 8th and the Boardwalk (there are six locations along the Shore). “It’s more

about the entire customer experience than just selling a product.” I never miss an opportunity to grab a free sample of The Original Fudge Kitchen fudge when I’m on the boards. There’s always (I mean ALWAYS) someone standing in front of the store – blue shirt, white pants – handing out free samples. Even my kids know the routine; near 8th Street? Get fudge! And often there’s someone in the window of the store hand-whipping their delicious fudge. Joe Bogle and
company make really good fudge, but there’s a lot of showmanship going on too. The fudge whipper may be performing a necessary step in the fudge-making process but he’s quite entertaining while doing it. I ran into Brian just as he was
whipping up a batch of fudge in the front window of the store. Folks were walking by the big picture window nabbing samples of fudge from Greta, a Lithuanian exchange student working at TOFK for the summer. Folks grabbed their fudge and then stopped to watch as Brian twirled ribbons of still-liquid fudge out of the copper kettle high into the air and then back down again without spilling a drop. Brian explained this was an essential step to whip some air into the fudge which in turn makes it smooth and creamy. Practical it may be, but like most things at TOFK, there was a bit of theater to go with it. OC mag: So obviously the whipping is not the first step in the fudge-making process. Where do you begin? Brian: First it’s cooked in a large pressure cooker. OC mag: Wait, what’s cooked? Brian: Well, all the ingredients – it’s all natural flavors. Light cream, milk,

sugar, our chocolate has chocolate liqueur in it, brown sugar for the vanilla and everything else. Everything starts out vanilla or chocolate based.
Brian: Sworn to secrecy.
OC mag: So what do you call this concoction?
Brian: Well…
Brian: We call it a batch. OC mag: Okay, so you make this batch and it’s liquid…
Sure we could use a machine, but…
OC mag: And then what? Brian: We have to bring it to a certain temperature, which actually depends on the weather outside.
OC mag: So are your cooks sworn to secrecy on the ingredients? Do you have to cut out their tongues so they can’t tell anyone like the ancient Egyptians did? Although I suppose they could just write it down.
Brain: We pour it into these copper kettles. It’s still very hot. We let it sit on those shelves in the back (pointing). It sits for about an hour and half until it cools to a certain temperature. The people who do the whipping know what that temperature is.

OC mag: And then? Brian: It comes up front to the window and it’s called whipping or beating the fudge. You’ll notice one of our taglines is “whipped creamy.” We don’t use whipped cream, we whip the fudge until it’s creamy. The whipping aerates it and that makes it smooth and creamy. OC mag: How long do you have to whip it? Right now I really want to start singing. “Whip it. Whip it good.” Brian: About 20 minutes per kettle and we get two or three pans out of each kettle. Each kettle weighs between 15 pounds and on a summer night we make about 1,000 pounds of fudge. OC mag: Wait a minute, wait a minute, let me do that math in my head… that’s 50 batches a day! Brian: Well there are three of us here that can do this step. But it’s definitely a cardio workout. But you get used to it. OC mag: Still that’s a lot.
Brian: Well yeah. But we get a pretty large crowd out here. A lot of people will come in and say “I remember watching this as a kid.” It’s pretty cool. Plus we have flavors you won’t find anywhere else. OC mag: So now what? Brian: It has to reach a certain consistency and then we cut it into these pans. Then it sits overnight and that helps it set up to the right consistency. OC mag: So here’s the big question… why not just use a machine? Brian: Some companies do use a machine. But by having a man do it we can react to the change in weather which can affect the end result. Plus we get the whole batch mixed – nothing gets left on the sides to get sugary. It’s simply a better product. OC mag: I have to tell you, the other employees who work here are also really nice and helpful. So you put a lot of effort into the product. It appears
you also put a lot of effort into the presentation. Brian: We want our customers to feel like guests, and that’s why we train our people for four days. It’s more about the whole customer experience than it is about just selling a product. Which is also one of the reasons we hand-whip, it’s part of the customer experience. Different people have different jobs. Greta and Narenga over there cut the fudge and put it on the marble. Not everyone is trained for that job. It’s more involved than you think. But everyone learns how to serve customers. We have a very particular way of doing things. We present them with a lot of information which is why training is four days. OC mag: Wow, there’s a lot more to your fudge than just someone standing out front with free samples. I never knew. Brian: Here’s the best part. What’s your favorite flavor… OC mag: Chocolate. Of course.

Battle of the French Toast
C'est Magnifique!
Holla for Challah Bread!
What is that word they call people that love France? Francophile? If so, you may use that while describing me now because though I have no clue why it’s called French toast, I’m in love – oui – love. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had French toast before, even stuffed French toast, but this offering from OC Surf Café had me at Bonjour. It wasn’t fancy – no sauces, or fillings, or frosted flake crusts – just good hearty bread dipped in a batter, cooked properly and served up on a colorful plate. The portion size was a bit robust for this gal, but I appreciated the availability had I required a little extra caloric umfph. The best part of the
The sweet bouquet of breakfast wafted into my nose almost a quarter mile before CJ’s Corner Grill came into view. That was my first indicator of yumminess. The second indicator was the speed with which the place filled up after we arrived. Owners Christian and Joe put their whole being into this little eatery and it shows. I anticipated the arrival of my French toast with caramelized peaches as a child awaits Christmas – I grew hungrier by the second (not that I had to wait long). And oh that sweet anticipation paid off. The challah bread they use is perfect – thick with a good bite and

dish were the fresh bananas, strawberries and blueberries all over the bread. This was no wimpy topping, it was c’est magnifique! There’s nothing worse than running out of the good bits half way through a dish. Every bite I had was accompanied by a fruit, reducing the need for syrup. The natural sweetness of the fruit was perfect and the presence of the powdered sugar was just a hint, not a full on answer, so it was a balanced bite. Though this 8th Street spot is casual, there is clearly someone in the kitchen with fine attention to detail. Voila!

cooked to a light crisp on the outside and a firm chew on the inside. Now combine that bread with some fresh whipped cream, tender sliced peaches and a brown-sugar sauce and you have a meal that can alter your mood for the day. Not feeling great? Try this gem on for size and it’ll adjust your attitude. They use the brown sugar sauce to caramelize the peaches and then add it right to the dish. It’s on the sweet side but I found the taste to be just right. I devoured this dish before my companions had barely started their meals. Can’t wait to go back.

MILDRED’S STRATHMERE RESTAURANT We FINALLY taste what all the buzz is about!
F
OR YEARS I’d heard about Mildred’s Strathmere Restaurant and how good it is – the food, the service, the atmosphere and all that. My very own Pepper Potts is a big fan. But I had never been able to get in the door – I was busy keeping the world safe for democracy. I am Iron Man, after all. Oh the wasted years. Why oh, why didn’t someone grab me by the lapel and drag me in here?! I at least learned from my mistake of omission and have vowed to make Mildred’s a regular stop during my summers. I feel sort of like a foodie Ebenezer Scrooge at the moment – awakened from my ignorance and promising to eat more of Mildred’s lemon meringue pie. And besides, I really like it when I’m greeted warmly at the door of a restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised as I entered Mildred’s… the blue on the walls is warm and welcoming and the lighting is pleasant. Pepper and I had left the rest of the crew behind for this mission and it was just the two of us out for a relaxing meal. We were off to a good start.

JULY 2015
Our hostess Rachel greeted us with a big smile as we entered. Rachel currently attends Catholic University in D.C. and is an OCHS alum. She was quite lovely and handed us off to owner and hostess extraordinaire Sallee Raffa, who we discovered, shakes more hands and dispenses more kisses than any politician running for office. Sallee and husband Andy have owned and operated Mildred’s for almost 20 years and she knows almost everybody coming through the doors. “If we get you once,” said Sallee, “you’re a lifer.” Indeed I plan to be. We got a cozy table near a window and settled in. I was truly happy to be flying solo with Pepper. We love the team but sometimes you just need to have a date night. Mildred’s is good for a date night.
A quick glance at the menu and we decided on the zucchini sticks to whet our appetites. Mildred’s is BYOB but it was a school night so Pepper and I went teetotaler. Sallee was nearby and stopped to chat. We were having just a lovely, relaxing time. “Did you order the homemades?” asked Sallee. Of course we did. The pasta at Mildred’s – handmade every morning before the sun rises by husband/chef Andy – has its own reputation and we were advised beforehand to ensure we got at least a side dish of this house specialty. We’ll get to that later. One of the charms of Mildred’s is the tradition. Mildred Conascenta opened the place in 1951. But this was no ordinary opening. She had been operating an eatery in Philadelphia when her lease ran out. She saw an ad for an old diner, bought it for $500, had it transported to Strathmere, scrubbed the heck out of it and the rest as they say, is yumminess. Sallee and Andy Raffa inherited the place – yes inherited it

– when Mildred passed 18 years ago. “My husband Andy has been here over 50 years,” said Sallee. “He was Mildred’s chef. She taught him everything she knew and he worked alongside her for years. When she passed she left him the business. And now all our children are involved; Gina, Jenelle, Christy, Andrew and Anthony.” Jenelle was our server. We felt so welcomed and relaxed by the time the zucchini sticks arrived – simply enjoyable. Zucchini sticks aren’t the sexiest items you’ll find on a bill of fare. They’re not haute cuisine but they can be a disaster if not done correctly. But I found these items to be properly cooked and well-presented. I could tell right away that the kitchen took care with all their items. The coating was flavorful and added a crunchy/ chewy texture that was spot on. They were a good size and the homemade dipping sauce had a lovely little zestiness. These are folks who are 100 percent invested in their business. “Andy is here at four in the morning. He and Christy fight to see who gets here first. Townspeople go out jogging and they come in and tell us they smell the gravy cooking before the sun is up,” said Sallee. With homemade pasta and gravy, you have to include Italian in the restaurant’s description but they’re also known for their seafood. I love
getting seafood at restaurants, and scallops are among my favorite dishes. Scallops are easy to ruin. I know from experience. This was not the case at Mildred's. “We get the seafood out of Philadelphia and our meats from Esposito’s – we’ve been using the same vendors forever,” said Sallee. How important is freshness? I think it’s one of the main reasons Mildred’s endures. You don’t need a trained palette to discern freshness and I picked it up right away, as soon as Jenelle delivered the warm bread with a side of long hots. Freshness was a thread that ran through the entire experience. The flavor of my scallops was superb – tasty and not too delicate but prepared so that the natural flavors of this bivalve were the star. Properly cooked with a nice sear – mmm, I want to go back right now. Pepper ordered the chicken saltimbocca and, again, 60-plus years of practice shined through in the dish. Pounded thin and served with a thin layer of prosciutto (Italian ham), smoked mozzarella and spinach. This is a classic dish prepared in a simple, classic fashion and the result made me wonder why I didn’t have the fortune of being born into a large Italian family and eating this every Sunday (yes Pepper ordered it but I had to taste it for research purposes).
And then there are the “homemades,” – pasta handmade every morning by Andy – and described by noted writer Myra Chanin as tasting like a “ribbon of silk.” Mildred’s seats over 100 nowadays but back in the day, it was just the stainless steel diner – which is still the centerpiece of the place. You can still sit in the diner, just opposite the kitchen. I’m told it’s the only place some folks will sit. Pretty cool. And finally the lemon meringue pie. Again, handmade by Andy before the sun comes up and before Strathmere’s joggers are back home for their second cup of coffee. Bursting with a lemony taste with a thick, sweet and creamy meringue and a flaky tender crust – oh my. I believe I’m drooling. Reservations are highly recommended at Mildred’s. They’re busy and rightly so, but the outside has lovely seating accommodations if you have a wait a bit for your table. We were there before Memorial Day on a Tuesday and the place filled up by 8pm. BYOB and entrees are quite reasonably priced (anywhere from $16 to $28 or so). They’re open seven days in the summer and are known for being open before the season starts and well after it ends. So give a call if there’s still a chill in the air, they may just be open. Careful, you may become a lifer.

ADORABLE CREATURE OF THE MONTH Snowy White Egret Photographed by Ray Zaleski
Spotted at the Howard Stainton Wildlife Refuge, this Snowy White Egret is sending love your way with his wings in the shape of a heart. Among the most elegant of the herons, the slender Snowy Egret sets off immaculate white plumage with black legs and brilliant yellow feet. Those feet seem to play a role in stirring up or herding small aquatic animals as the egret forages. Breeding Snowy Egrets grow filmy, curving plumes that once fetched astronomical prices in the fashion industry, endangering the species. Early conservationists rallied to protect egrets by the early twentieth century, and this species is once again a common sight in shallow coastal wetlands. – allaboutbirds.org.

Questions
for Jim Mallon, the new business administrator by Victoria Cleveland
When did you begin your position as the new business administrator? The council authorized my appointment at the
very last meeting of December. I was with the city, and I came back in May of 2014 as aid to the mayor, and I was appointed business administrator at the end of December so that we could have a nice smooth transition between myself and the administrator before Mike Dattilo, who is getting ready to retire. But in total, I’ve done about 10-12 years of service for Ocean City.
What do you think will be the biggest challenge with being the business administrator? I think it’s no different
than any other position. It’s all about making sure that we, as the administration, communicate properly and effectively. We want to be able to share all the good things we are doing, along with sharing the challenges we face with the community so they can understand where we are at any given time on any given project, and making sure that we are communicating effectively with the governing body, which is City Council. Right now we are in a great spot. The administration of City Council work very well together, we’re all very consistent in our thoughts to move forward, making Ocean City great. So that is a great thing. I think the biggest challenge, same as any other position, is effective communication.
What are some of your responsibilities? It’s very simply the
day-to-day operations of the city. All the city departments report up through me to the mayor. So it really is a very fulfilling and encompassing position where I get to interact with the team members we have as well as the governing body and the mayor on a daily basis. I think that being responsible for the taxpayers
is probably the most important piece. I want to make sure that we challenge our team members on a daily basis. Are we doing the best that we can for a taxpayer, for one of our guests, and for our team members?
What is the best part of being the business administrator?
The best part right now is that the interaction between city council and the mayor is very positive and I believe we are all on the same page heading in a great direction. I have worked here in the past where there wasn’t always that great relationship, so now to see seven council people along with the mayor working together toward a goal is a wonderful experience for me.
What's the day-to-day schedule like? It varies every day.
It goes from meetings to a resident who wants to sit with me because they have a concern or a question to setting the agenda for council meetings. We do have some regular standing meetings about say our latest capital projects that are ongoing. It’s trying to manage your time and use every minute the best you can to try and accomplish what you can do.
What is one thing you would like to tell the people of Ocean City? I think that Mayor and Council recognize what
makes Ocean City great, and we are going to continue to pursue that. And we know that whether you live here or you visit here or you own a business here, you want the town to be safe, you want the town to be clean, and you want our team members to be responsive and friendly and cooperative, and we are going to continue to strive to do all those things.

ACK G. Jernee, captain of the Ocean City Beach Patrol and a veteran of the First World War, knew it was time for a patriotic ceremony. He led the fundraising campaign to buy a flagpole for the Boardwalk. People responded quickly and at nine o’clock on the morning of July 4, 1940, a color guard of ten lifeguards – Roscoe Faunce Jr., Harry Bunting III, Irving Humphrey, J. the lifeguards stood at attention, the color guard raised the Stars and Stripes to the top of the 50-foot flagpole for the first time. That Fourth of July afternoon, Mayor George D. Richards led the flagpole dedication ceremony. A bronze tablet was affixed to the pole with the following inscription: “This mast, from which floats the flag of our native land, was erected by the people of Ocean City and dedicated as a shrine of American patriotism, setting forth their eternal faith in, and loyalty to that flag and the liberty and justice which it represents.” As the dedication program drew to a close, the 4,000
people in attendance recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. The color guard of ten members of the Ocean City Beach Patrol, who had stood at attention during the rest of the program, then officiated in the lowering of the flag as the Cape May County American Legion Band played “The Star Spangled Banner.” After folding the flag, the lifeguard color guard marched back to their Tenth Street headquarters as the band played “God Bless America.” The OCBP flag ceremony at the Music Pier took place every summer – morning and night – from 1940 to 1946.

MATTER OF ART
ByTina Notaro
As I walked up to The Barn I could hear the excited voices of about ten young children as they were told to put away their supplies. It
was a warm and breezy Wednesday and the weekly After-School Art Class was just wrapping up. Jill Cucci-Smith, owner of the historic studio and gallery space in Seaville, welcomed me into her cozy and inviting workshop. “I never title my stuff, but this is My Place I Worship,” Jill smiled as she pointed out a cheery mixed-media abstraction of The Barn. Her love for both art and the amazing place she has created to foster it beamed across her face. “I want to teach art. True art.” Jill, who is originally from North Jersey, moved to Seaville after receiving her Master’s in Art Education from University of the Arts. This technical knowledge of art, along with her widely developed skills, gave Jill the tools needed to make her dream a reality. Shortly after purchasing the property in 2007, Jill opened The Barn in an effort to bring art into the community. Eight years later and students of all ages have been given the opportunity to work alongside her in the studio. In addition to the After-School Art Class, Jill also hosts adult painting and printmaking classes, BYOB happy hours, and teen portfolio prep sessions. Shortly after the children left, the next batch of eager students began trickling through the barn doors. Jill’s adult painting class was about to start. First to arrive was Peggy Endicott of Marmora, who immediately sought Jill’s input on the line work she had prepared for class. Peggy’s reference image featured a lush arrangement of asparagus, lettuce and strawberries in a woven basket. “Please don’t take this to heart,” Jill pointed a pencil at the rim of the basket, “but this here is a little bit wider than this.” After some thoughtful consideration, Peggy got to work. During my visit it became obvious that Jill’s understanding of art extends in many directions. While her artistic roots are grounded in textiles – she told me her grandmother had taught her to sew and how the two would stay awake until the early morning mending socks – Jill often utilizes multiple mediums while creating her art. “I’m really into the encaustic,” she said of her current favorite. For those unfamiliar, encaustic refers to a

wax based paint (made from beeswax, resin and pigment) that is applied to a surface while very hot. Before working with encaustics, Jill studied collage at Bennington College. The use of varied materials provides more freedom to express her artistic voice. She even described how tempting it is to work mixed media into her more recent realism paintings. “Sometimes just using paint is a little typical,” she paused, “for me.” Jill first began challenging herself to paint realistically after going through a tough divorce –“I couldn’t work for years.,” she told me. Luckily, that challenge was just what she needed to start creating art again. From wax to weaving, Jill showcases an extensive portfolio. Beautiful representations of her talent hang from the walls of The Barn: a swirling abstract painting in warm pastels, the collage piece that implores you to “let go of the need to be well thought of,” and Jill’s in-progress chicken painting that may evolve into a mixed-media piece with the addition of watercolor paper flowers. Each piece speaks for itself and together serve as an inspirational backdrop for everyone working in the studio. “You just feel free and at home,” Patricia Liddy-Earlmen of Seaville told me as she brushed a placid shade of aqua onto a long canvas. All of Jill’s students agree that the friendly and encouraging atmosphere of The Barn is one of the best parts of class. Pulling the color across the landscape, Patricia described the way her paintings take shape as she works. “This little bit here may become some water or a stream,” she pointed to a dab of blue in the bottom right corner. As I drifted through the studio it was intriguing to see the variety of style and subject matter in each project. At the back table, Dennisville resident Kevin Carroll was working on a winter scene of a red covered bridge. Across from him was Freeda Rothenberg, who makes the weekly drive from Mays Landing to attend class. Freeda had brought in a thin piece of slate to use as her “canvas” for a birdhouse painting. Without strict project guidelines, Jill’s students are given the freedom to express themselves through their art. “It’s a lot of fun” Peggy told me with a smile. With such a variety of outlets, The Barn has something for everyone. From experienced artists to outright beginners, the quaint little workshop on Route 9 offers a supportive environment for anyone wishing to develop their skills. Looking towards the future, Jill plans on making some renovations to The Barn’s exterior this summer. “I want the building to be more and more updated,” she told me. Adding more studio and gallery space to exhibit local artists is also part of that vision. As for Jill, she will continue to teach classes at The Barn while making her art. Truly fortunate, Jill is of the few that can say “I love what I do.”
Jill’s work can be found on her website, cucci-smith.com, and in the Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts in Millville. For more information about The Barn, visit thebarnnj.com.

TRENDS STATIC SKATE SHOP
JUST IN TIME for Ocean City’s brand new skate park to open up this summer, Dane Romantino has launched Static Skate Shop. Located at 947 Asbury Avenue, Static Skate Shop is the only store in Ocean City that is specific to skateboarding. By Victoria Cleveland. Photos by Macy Oteri.
“We opened on April 4, 2015,” Dane said proudly, for at just 19 years old, he is already the owner of his own enterprise. Yet Dane has a calm and collected attitude about his operations at the store, saying, “I have had nothing but open arms so far, no problems with anybody. I love Asbury Avenue, everybody is so cool here.” With Ocean City’s new skate park set to open this summer at 5th Street and Asbury Avenue, the city was in dire need of a skate shop. And who better to do it than an expert himself? “I have been skating since I was six years old, so about 13 years later I decided to open a skate shop. I always wanted to do it,” Dane said. His knowledge and involvement in the sport make him keenly aware of the true needs of skaters.
Dane Romantino and his business partner Jake Fulginiti
Dane knows what skaters like, and makes sure he has what they need in stock. “A lot of people like Deathwish, Baker, and Girl skateboards,” Dane says about the more popular brands, “I’ve always ridden Deathwish.” The shop also sells plenty of other skateboarding gear, as well as different clothing, and they are working on getting in swimsuits and shoes for the summer. Diamond, Thrasher, and Dirty Politics are some examples of the more popular clothing brands Static Skate Shop carries. One noteworthy brand that Static Skate Shop sells is Clearly Faded, “They’re a local brand; we support local. They’re from Atlantic City. They’re blowing up actually. Wiz Khalifa wore them in Rolling Stone,” Dane noted. Mentioning another popular brand the skate

shop sells, Dane said, “Thrasher is becoming a household name. [Even] people who don’t skate wear it now.” The store welcomes people with any level of experience skateboarding. When asked about the types of customers Static Skate Shop gets, Dane stated, “It’s everybody. From little kids getting their first skateboards, to people who I grew up watching skate. I even had a 60 year old man come in and buy a board from me because he still skated.” According to Dane, skateboarding today is much different from when he first taught himself to skate. “When I see skateboarding nowadays, everyone is getting way too good. It’s like a progression going on. Everyone is jumping down the biggest stuff and

jumping on the biggest rails. It’s getting competitive and I don’t like that.” Dane and his friends are more into the fun-and-freedom aspect of skating, and he says he enjoys skating the most when he and his friends are just riding around town together. Dane encourages everyone to stop in and support their local skate shop. He is especially excited for the opening of the new skate park this summer. “I can’t wait until Ocean City Skate Park opens. Everyone is going to be having fun, and getting the community together.” Static Skate Shop at 947 Asbury Avenue is open daily. Visit them at staticskateshop.com for more information.

The Spotted Whale
Have you spotted this shop on Asbury Avenue? We catch up with owner Anne Pecora to bring you this whale’s tale. Text and Photo by Nikki Sammartino
A
WHALE has found its way onto Asbury Avenue! Okay, so maybe not a real whale, but a new gift shop called the Spotted Whale. The Pecora family, owning a second home on Long Beach Island, always made their way to Ocean City to enjoy the Boardwalk. When a property became available on Asbury Avenue, owner Anne Pecora decided to take advantage of the great shopping and friendly atmosphere by introducing the Spotted Whale to Ocean City. “We wanted to be a part of the stellar business district that Ocean City is so well known for,” said Anne. So why the name the Spotted Whale? Anne’s son Stephen chose the name from a long list of potentials. They wanted the name to fit the coastal theme of the store but also be fun and quirky. Mary Anne Dimarco, an employee at the new location, feels that the name is perfect for a store in Ocean City since one of the lagoons in the Gardens has the shape of a whale’s tail. “I knew I wanted to do [a coastal living themed store] and find a name that blended old world with whimsical – quaint with a twist of fun,” Anne said. As fun and mythical as the name is, it turns out there really is a whale that has spots! This is the whale shark, a filter feeding shark eating mainly plankton and occasionally small fish. It can be up to 46 feet in length and found it warm-temperate ocean waters. They’re not actually whales
because they are not cetaceans, but instead a member of the Chondryichtyes group which includes sharks. How’s that for some science trivia?! The original store is located in Barnegat Light near the historic fishing village, Viking Village. A third location is expected to open in Stone Harbor come Spring 2016. This additional location was chosen because like both Barnegat Light and Ocean City, it is family oriented with a great shopping atmosphere. The mascot is painted on the large glass window in the front of the Asbury Avenue store. The building is covered in a light stained wood, setting the tone for the nautical theme of the store. The inventory is organized in clean and brightly lit displays. The shelves lining the walls display colorful mugs, pillows, trinkets, unique greeting cards, glassware, napkins, and artwork. There is even a selection of furniture and children’s toys. Bracelets are displayed at the white wood paneled register counter. Behind the register both Nicole Pecora (Anne’s niece) and Mary Anne greet shoppers with warm, smiling faces. “We are a great place to pick up a hostess gift,” said Mary Anne. Anne focuses on choosing items both unique and affordable while also trying to get ones made in the United States – especially her home state of New Jersey. She believes that its important to support the artists and crafts people of small businesses. “There are so many talented and dedicated people who need the opportunity to have their products featured,” said Anne. “We also have to encourage people to shop locally, it keeps towns vibrant and local residents employed.” The Spotted Whale prides itself on customer satisfaction and catering to the desires of the shopper. They are able to accommodate most requests – a lot of the products seen in the store currently are a result of shoppers’ suggestions. “We love listening to what our customers have to say!” said Anne. If you are looking for a unique selection of items, whether it be for yourself or a gift for someone else, the Spotted Whale may be a good place to look. Nicole believes that it is not just about shopping and making a sale but she wants coming into the Spotted Whale to be an experience to remember. “Everyone here has greeted us with welcoming arms and has been very sweet. We hope to do the same to anyone who stops in,” says Nicole.

ACTIVITY OF THE MONTH SUP originated in Hawaii, whe re it was likely a combination of surfing and outrigger canoeing.
WHAT’S SUP?
Get on board with this fast-growing watersport Text and Photographs by Tina Notaro
“You can do this, you have balance.” These are the words I
repeated to my reflection the morning of my first Stand Up Paddleboard lesson. Little did I know my self-affirmations were hardly necessary. As the world’s fastest growing watersport, Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP for short) has gained the attention of both thrill seekers and part-time couch potatoes like myself. Without the need for expensive gear or extreme agility, I had to see what all the fuss was about. When I arrived at Bay Cats, located between 3rd and 4th streets, I was greeted by their lovely instructor Jayne. In less than five minutes Jayne had gone over everything I needed to know before hitting the water. Crossing myself as I put on the life jacket, we headed down the dock. One foot at a time I swiftly made the transition from landlubber to paddleboarder. We started off sitting on our knees to paddle past the docks. As we moved across the water Jayne explained how SUP originated in Hawaii, where it was likely a combination of surfing and outrigger canoeing. Once we reached the bay it was time to
put the “SU” in SUP. Following Jayne’s instruction, I planted both feet on either side of the board’s center to obtain a squat position. With a quick breath I pressed against gravity; I was up! It took a moment to fine tune my footing and adjust my stance, but within minutes I was totally comfortable. As Ocean City’s newest SUP’er, I let the tranquility of the early morning air ease any lingering nerves. Using our paddles, Jayne and I propelled ourselves against the current towards the 9th Street Bridge. It was easy to see why SUP has recently become so popular. Speaking with Harbor Outfitters, another one of Ocean City’s SUP rental locations, I found that regular SUP’ers tout the sport’s body-sculpting benefits. Since it takes a variety of different muscles to stand and paddle, you exercise your whole body in the process. Improve your balance, tone your core, and let your hair flow in the breezy bay air – what’s not to love? Before long, I was feeling the pleasant burn of a fun and satisfying workout. Both Bay Cats and Harbor Outfitters offer SUP lessons to get you started. Once comfortable on a board the fun

really starts. Like nature? Take an Eco Tour with Bay Cats! Love yoga? Harbor Outfitters has Paddleboard Yoga (yes, yoga on a paddleboard). If you fear that your Sun Salutation may end up in Downward-Facing Doggie-Paddle, stop by one of Jayne’s dockside Ebb and Flow yoga sessions. For those looking for a little extra adrenaline, consider catching some waves with Harbor Outfitter’s Stand Up Paddle Surf course. With the ability to set your own threshold for effort, SUP is the perfect activity for people of all ages looking for some summer fun this season. As we reached the turnaround point Jayne and I took a break on our boards (and snapped a selfie!). While we enjoyed our quiet morning on the water, she informed me that the bay would soon fill up with boaters and jet skis. I was thankful to have had my first SUP experience without the commotion of a thousand buoyant speed demons. After a brief rest, and with the grace of the returning current, we began our paddle back towards the dock. I could not have asked for a more perfect day to learn about this awesome hobby and am already excited for the next time I get back on a paddleboard. Do yourself a favor, and try SUP this summer!

Down by the Bay The Bayside Center is OC’s hidden gem for all things science, a hub for bayside activity and home to a brand new garden. by Nikki Sammartino
W
HAT HAS a saltwater aquarium, blueberries, science experiments, sailboats, picnics, fishing, and weddings? The Bayside Center of Ocean City! The house at the end of the long whiteshelled driveway, nestled along the Great Egg Harbor Bay, is not only a museum about the bay ecosystems of South Jersey, but also home to a new garden, tons of week-long science camps, the OC Sailing Foundation lessons and is an ideal spot for a picnic or a fishing afternoon. The newest attraction at Bayside Center is the garden. It offers vegetables to the community and an opportunity to learn about creating healthier diets. It’s also the subject of one of the science summer camps, based out of one of the two garages on the property. The Ocean City Sailing Foundation uses the other garage for its sailing lessons during the summer. There is a little bit of everything at the Bayside Center and, as luck would have it, I get to work here all summer. Turns out, the Bayside Center building has its own story. In 1916, the Diesel 54 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE
JULY 2015
family, who created the diesel engine, made 520 Bay Avenue their vacation home, calling it “Leseid” (Diesel spelled backward.) Then, in 1958 the Wheaton family bought the nearly one and a half acre property to use as their summer home calling it the “Wheaton Estate.” In 1995, Cape May County bought the property from the Wheaton family through the Open Space and Farmland Preservation Program. Just a year later, the Bayside Center was born when Ocean City began its 25-year lease on the location, using it for both education and recreation. You can stop in the museum during the week between 10am and 3pm to learn about the ecosystems of the South Jersey shore and bay through various displays and exhibits. A touch tank set up by the Wetlands Institute offers a hands-on experience of the wildlife from the bay. This includes mussels, whelks, minnows, and various other creatures. There is also a saltwater aquarium displaying additional sea animals, offering many opportunities for learning about the shore ecosystems of Ocean City. Then you can wander outside to learn about the grounds and what’s growing in them. Jah’s Creation, an organic farm located
in Egg Harbor Township, donated tomato plants, red leaf lettuce, eggplant, squash, zucchini, mustard greens, romaine lettuce, radishes, green beans, and even blueberries. Future plans include adding a variety of herbs. Wendy Moyle, city recreation manager responsible for the Bayside Center, is excited about the garden’s potential. She plans to team up with the local housing authority as well as local churches and other organizations that can benefit from the crops. These organizations will help with the maintenance and harvesting in the garden while benefiting from learning about incorporating these foods into their diets. Most gardeners would discourage wildlife from entering into their gardens, but at the Bayside Center Garden, all are welcome. Being a completely organic garden, no pesticides are used so even insects are welcome. Wendy leaves some of the lettuce on the ground beneath the gardening containers to feed the small animals that make their way in. “I leave lettuce under the boxes since he [a rabbit] can’t reach what’s up inside,” said Wendy. The Bayside Center’s series of weeklong
summer camps are for children ages six to 11. They offer a fun way for kids to learn about the wildlife, history, and pastimes of Ocean City. The themes range from exploring beach ecosystems, studying and modeling various aspects of astronomy, and creating their own inventions to becoming amateur crypto zoologists and even recreating Frankenstein’s hand. One of these camps, Tour the US: Taste Test Laboratory, will be taking advantage of the Bayside Center Garden starting August 7. Students will learn about gardening, taste what the garden has to offer, and learn how to include these foods in healthier meals. “We want to teach children about taking what we grow and turning it into the healthy foods we can eat,” said Wendy. Jake Krutsick, a lifelong resident of Ocean City, has experienced the Bayside Center from the perspective of both a camper and a counselor. He was first drawn to the Bayside Center through his love of science and interest in the experiments the camps offered. Once he surpassed the
age limit for the camps he just wasn’t ready to leave the Bayside Center behind so he began working as a counselor. “I’m a big kid at heart and working with the kids is just so much fun. Every day I look forward to work because of the kids. More than anything, they are the reason I come back year after year,” said Jake. Not only is the center a great place for science education, but it’s also a great place to learn a sport. The Bayside Center has teamed up with the Ocean City Sailing Foundation to offer summer sailing lessons to anyone age eight and up. Weeklong group lessons are held both in the morning and afternoon by US Sailing Level One certified instructors. Although groups tend to be small (4:1), private lessons are also available if you are interested in a more personal experience. “The Bayside Center is a great place to learn how to sail,” said Pat Leonardo, director of the Ocean City Sailing Foundation. “The Ocean City Sailing Foundation is definitely the place to come for potential sailors of
any age who only have a limited amount of time to learn a sport.” The Bayside Center also hosts a Night in Venice party each year offering the perfect atmosphere for viewing the parade of boats making their way along the bay. There’s a live band, a picnic, and activities for children and the entire family while the event judges watch the parade from the second floor deck. Tickets for the event are available through the Ocean City Box Office, but only 300 are sold each year. Perhaps because it’s tucked in by the bay and not in the center of town, the Bayside Center’s potential is sometimes overlooked. Some people, though, have included the Bayside Center in one of the biggest days in their lives. The grounds can be rented out for events – and some weddings have been held at the Bayside Center. “I’m not sure a lot of people know [the Bayside Center] exists, but the place has so much to offer. From fishing piers, to the camp, to the museum... even the property is great for events or even a picnic,” said Jake. “I wish it came more to the forefront in Ocean City, but it is certainly a hidden gem.” 55

The life of brian wynn In an unassuming detached garage in Egg Harbor Township surfboard shaper and glasser Brian Wynn crafts his handmade boards with a whole lot of love
By Tina Notaro Photos by Stefanie Godfrey

For those of you that don’t know, we have a sort of legend living among us. The man himself is Brian Wynn, the brawn and brain behind Wynn Surfboards. Since 1993, Brian has been shaping and glassing some of the best boards on the East Coast. Shaping who? Glassing what? I hardly know how to hang-ten! First, let’s go back to 1989. While Madonna was singing “Like a Prayer,” a young Brian was shreddin’ the gnar on the Jersey Shore. Growing up in Vineland, Brian first caught the surfing bug when he was 16. “Once my love of surfing happened, I was ready to move out,” he told me as we stood in his workshop. The air inside smelled of resin while the din of a door planer buzzed from the floor above us. Before he skipped the coast, Brian started making surfboards out of his father’s garage. “Back when I started, not too many people shaped,” he explained. “Now everyone is able to go online to learn. Between when I started and when internet happened is a big difference.” Brian’s immediate draw to the craft led him to warm and sunny San Diego; California’s hotbed for surfboard manufacturing. There Brian was able to develop his glassing and shaping skills with boardbuilding icon Stu Kenson. “We glassed everybody’s boards,” he said plainly. Glassing refers to the process of sealing surfboard foam within a resin shell. Working alongside Stu and other industry professionals gave Brian the opportunity to perfect these skills. After ten years building board, Brian had earned a loyal client base throughout the San Diego area. “My time in California was really fun,” Brian

reminisced. Aside from a lot of surfing and a brief stint in college to study graphic design, Brian’s time in the Golden State also brought him the love of his life. When the time came to raise a family, Brian and his now-wife Melissa decided it was time to come back. “I grew up with a lot of different things here on the East Coast that you can’t get over there – like the ability to live somewhere with space,” he laughed. “The thing that made it easy is that over there I’m a small fish in a big pond when it comes to surfboards, and here I’m more of a big fish in a small pond.” So in 2006, Brian and his wife moved to Egg Harbor Township, fifteen minutes outside of Ocean City. For the last eight years Brian has operated Wynn Surfboards from his nearby workshop. When I visited, there were about thirty surfboards in all stages of the building process. I asked Brian how many boards he’s made over his career; “Definitely in the thousands,” he said after a moment, struggling for a more specific answer. “A lot of guys keep track, I guess. I don’t care how many boards I shaped.” It became obvious that while other builders are counting their notches, Brian is working hard to perfect the board in front of him. Whatever the measure, Brian’s craftsmanship is definitely some of the best around. A quick glance through online surfing forums will verify this. One user wrote, “I have gotten five customs from Brian Wynn in the last few years and each one was better than the next.” Another spoke of how Brian’s glass work is still praised on the West Coast. The general consensus stands behind his keen awareness of building materials and his thorough understanding of individual needs. Brian stresses the importance of matching every surfer with the shape that is right for him, whether it be a stock or custom board. Despite the common notion that surfboards be built based on your home coast, he assured me that “we do get that good surf here, we just have to suffer through a lot of conditions.” While there are many styles to choose from (shortboards, longboards, singlefins, hybrids…) each surfboard starts out as a foam blank. “If you squeeze it, it’ll dent,” Brian informed me as I handled a scrap of raw foam. He and his team use
increasingly finer tools to “sculpt” the blanks into whatever shape the job requires. Knowing the unique design elements that will benefit each surfer helps set Wynn Surfboards apart from the competition. Often working in an assembly line, each board is hand-laid with a fiberglass cloth for strength and protection against the water. Depending on the desired aesthetics, coloring can either be applied directly to the foam or as part of the glassing process. Following the resin coat, the board is then sanded, buffed and polished. From start to finish, the average turnaround time on custom work is about three weeks. Although custom and stock orders from Heritage Surf Shop in Ocean City keep Brian busy, much of his production schedule revolves around contract glass work. Shapers from all over the East Coast send in their boards for his superior glassing talent. With only a short two month lull in the winter, Brian and his team work full-time to meet demand. “There’s plenty of work here,” he said of business on this coast. Between board production, family life and
fickle wave forecasts, Brian’s own surfing is mostly reserved for dedicated surf trips. Vacations to California and Costa Rica provide obligation-free time to be in the water. Even so, Brian still gets out for the occasional surf session at home, conditions permitting of course. “I’ll make the time come September, when the water’s warm and the waves are good.” His more accessible outlet is actually ice hockey, which he can easily plan into his busy schedule. He chuckled as he said, “I know that at 7 o’clock, I’m gonna go and I’m gonna have fun.” With all hobbies aside, Brian’s love for his craft is what drives his work. Surfers and shapers across either coast can attest to his talent. With no plans to quit any time soon, Brian will continue to build Wynn Surfboards’ reputation as one of the area’s best surfboard manufacturers. For more information on Brian Wynn and his boards visit www.wynnsurfboards.com or stop into Heritage at 744 West Avenue in Ocean City.

BOOK OF THE MONTH Love Letters to the Dead by Ava Dellaira
IT ALL started as an English assignment to write a letter to the dead. Laurel couldn’t write to her sister May, that death was too fresh. So she wrote to visionaries who burned so brightly that they began to self destruct, just like May. Kurt Cobain, Judy Garland, Amelia Earhart, E.E. Cummings and more all share the same bravery, and passion, and even fear as Laurel and her sister. Laurel is in a new school, a world where no one knows of her sister, but she can’t face these new friends until she has confronted the events leading up to that night on the bridge. Famous history of talented tortured souls is blended in Laurel’s vivid letters to portray the depth of her past. This book finds beauty in heart wrenching struggles and makes you feel blessed to have shared the same air with people who felt so deeply. - JoHannah Newman

Soap Story
We are inundated daily by experts telling us which products we should or shouldn’t use. Here we attempt to end the Great Soap Debate and wash our hands of it once for all. By Stefanie Godfrey
I
S SOAP a “four letter word?” If you say it, do you need to wash your mouth out with it? Back in April, an article floated on my Facebook page claiming that soap was terrible for your skin and that you should never use it. There are a few bars of soap in my shower, and my skin wasn’t looking any worse for the wear, so I decided to take issue with this article and do some fact checking of my own in the Great Soap Debate 2015. (Giving things catchy names always helps, don’t you think?) Disclaimer: I love soap. I love the fragrance of it, I like the tactile throwback of using an actual bar of it, instead of the liquid variety. So, naturally, when I read the April 8 Good Housekeeping article and its five claims about how nasty soap was, I was a little put off. Could soap really be bad? Good Housekeeping’s author says soap does the following: weakens your skin, is super drying, can make you break out, can give you wrinkles, and makes it easier for germs to breed. It tells you to use Dove instead.

JULY 2015
I got in touch with the owner of Little Egg Harbor Soap Company Kathy Notaro (who’s soap is in my shower) to do a little fact finding of my own. Kathy, by the way, has glowing skin. Score one for soap. “They are referring to harsh commercial soaps. Ivory is soap. There’s no Sodium Lauryl Sulfate in Ivory, but there’s no extra oil in it either and it dries your skin out,” said Kathy. “My soap is made with six different oils. There’s at least five to six percent extra oil, sometimes more.” According to Livestrong.com, sodium lauryl sulfate is an emulsifier and foaming agent commonly used in cosmetic products and industrial cleaners. SLS is present in most body washes, shampoos, toothpastes and laundry detergent. Dove Beauty Bar’s first ingredient is sodium lauroyl
isethionate, also a surfactant (cleansing agent) like SLS. SLS has been in the news a lot lately due to the public becoming increasingly more aware of chemicals in everyday products. There is a website dedicated to the chemical called www.slsfree.net. On this site, they mention that there is no substantiated evidence of a connection between cancer and SLS, but there is a link of poor eye health and eye irritation in children, possible male infertility, and hormonal imbalance. Because the FDA interprets the term “soap” to apply only when the bulk of the nonvolatile matter in the product consists of an alkali salt of fatty acids and the product’s detergent properties are due to the alkali-fatty acid compounds, and the product is labeled, sold, and represented solely as soap, products that contain SLS and like ingredients can’t be labeled as soap. Kathy says this is why Dove is called a “beauty bar.” LEH Soap ingredients include only foodgrade vegetable plant oils of palm, coconut, olive, sunflower, castor, shea and cocoa butters. The lye (sodium hydroxide) is food grade. The soaps are also vegan – meaning they don’t use tallow (rendered animal fat), an ingredient in Dove. “Customers are shocked to find out and learn what’s really in these products they are buying. It happens so often that customers come back (after using our soap) and their skin is healed.” It’s hard to navigate this “who do we trust” world of chemical products vs. natural ingredients. My brain was hurting while doing some of the research for this article, but I hope I’ve shed some light on the Great Soap Debate for you and given you cause to investigate expert claims a little deeper. Now go wash up.

Keeping Your Skin in Tip-Top Shape This Summer from AtlantiCare
With summer in full swing, most of us are spending as much time as possible on the beach, in the garden, on the golf course, in the pool — or wherever you enjoy spending time outdoors.
To learn more about AtlantiCare or to find a physician, call 1-888-569-1000 or visit atlanticare.org.
Rub It In Apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or more to all exposed skin. Sunscreen products labeled “broad spectrum” must protect the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, and after swimming or sweaty outdoor activities such as running or beach volleyball.
Top It Off Shade your face from the sun with a visor, hat or ball cap, and try to stay indoors or in the shade between 10 am and 2 pm, when skin-damaging rays are strongest.
Skip the Straw If you like to sip your cold beverages through a straw, you might want to reconsider your habit. Over time, the puckering of your lips around a straw — or around a cigarette — can lead to the development of fine wrinkles around the mouth.
Nourish from the Inside A healthy, well-balanced diet can provide your skin with important nutrients to stay healthy. In addition, a lifestyle that incorporates regular physical activity increases circulation, which can improve the skin’s appearance.

Good Karma
A Special Team By Cindy Ferraino
W
HEN KAREN Pratt of the Ocean City Aquatic and Fitness Center invited fellow employee and friend Lisa Rumer to a swimming event for Special Olympics, little did she know that the invitation would ignite a passion in Lisa to help future special needs athletes embrace the love and spirit of developing a successful, healthy and rewarding lifestyle. “After cheers and tears erupted for a boy named Chris who at first was reluctant to swim and then he gave it his all… I was hooked,” Lisa Rumer recalled. Fast forward 23 years later and she’s still hooked. Born and raised in Ocean City, Lisa has been grateful for the opportunity to mentor and train special needs athletes through a variety of different programs offered by the Ocean City Aquatic and Fitness Center. Lisa is the program director at the center and in addition, has started the annual Labor Day Run, the Ocean City Half Marathon and this year’s Triathlon/ Dualthon that took place in May. Drawing on her own experiences and training as a high school track standout and now as an avid running enthusiast, Lisa became the catalyst in introducing a triathlon component to the Special Olympics program. “I believe my love of triathlon can spread to others so they can accomplish something and feel successful, “ Rumer said. The success of the swimming program for people with special needs at the Ocean City Aquatic Fitness Center gave Lisa the jumpstart that she needed to create a team to compete in the Special Olympics USA Games. Held in June 2014, Rumer and her band of 16 athletes, ages 16 to 32, went to Trenton to showcase their athletic talents. “They were so enthusiastic and full of energy,” she said. Not only was the chance to compete in the Special Olympics USA Games a rewarding experience for the athletes, but the impact trickled down onto their families. “Parents and family members noticed a positive outlook and also a push for healthy lifestyle choices,” Lisa said. Besides competing in the games, the athletes were able to build new friendships
with other athletes through a dance and other activities. “The parents have confidence and feel secure with me taking care of their children,” Lisa said. Shortly after the team returned to Ocean City with their first triathlon in the books, Lisa was offered head coach position of Team USA and an honorary membership on the USA Health and Wellness Leadership Committee. Team USA received a nod to compete in the World Special Olympic Games in Los Angeles this month. Like the preparation it took to get ready for the USA Games, Rumer and the athletes have embarked upon a nine-month training program. The four athletes ages 16 to 27 that are going to the World Special Olympic Games are: Amy Noctor, Noah Dellas, Ben Heitmeyer and Courtney Dreyfus. All the athletes have had some instruction and have been taking the new routine in stride. The athletes have been trained to compete in all three triathlon areas of swimming, running and biking. “We figure out what motivates them and nurture that so it helps them be successful,” Lisa said. With the World Games on the horizon, the team is doing their best and putting in the hard work to shine brightly in Los Angeles from July 24 through August 2. Team USA will compete on July 25. Fans and supporters can catch a glimpse of these talented, young individuals on the ESPN network. “It is so neat, the games will be televised on ESPN,” Lisa added. While Team USA gets prepared to bask in the glow in the international spotlight, Lisa knows that this opportunity is something that she and these young athletes will cherish for a lifetime. “This has been an incredible and rewarding experience for me,” she said.

Make Your Retirement
more enjoyable with these tips from Reich Asset Management Most people know they should have a financial plan, even though many do not. But what about an income distribution plan? For decades, the benefits of financial plans have been discussed but only for the last few years have we begun to hear about income plans.
T
HE REASON for the recent discussion is due to our aging population. Eight thousand baby boomers are estimated to be turning 65 every day for the next 18 years. Investors have been taught well how to save and invest for their retirements over the last 50 years, but they haven’t had nearly enough education on how to spend what they have taken most of their lives to accumulate. This is one of the biggest issues facing retires today. To be honest, saving for retirement isn’t all that hard. By buying a well-diversified, low cost, mostly equity portfolio, the market is going to do most of the work. Where the real challenges lies is in “unsaving” or spending down these same assets in retirement. “Become more conservative” is an all too familiar mantra of advisors. But what does that mean? Does it mean having fewer equities? More bonds? What risk are investors avoiding, and more importantly, what risk is it creating for them? In particular, longevity risk – the risk of outliving your savings!

JULY 2015
In a traditional portfolio, retiring at the wrong time (sequence of return risk) can have a disastrous effect on whether or not you have enough money to maintain your standard of living in retirement. Losing money in the first few years of retirement, combined with the idea retirees are living longer (longevity risk) can create a perfect storm for those nearing or in retirement.
By having a formal income distribution plan in place, retirees can address the primary issues surrounding them today such as:
1 2
What assets to spend in which order
Integrating Social Security claiming strategies into an income plan
3
Risk control in a portfolio, including longevity, sequence of return, and volatility
4
Low interest rates
5
Taxes
