Stop and smell the roses
OMETIMES I'd like to hit "replay" on life. Like after a shower, when my hair is stiff from conditioner that I never washed out. How did I miss doing that key task when there are only, like, five things you need to accomplish during any given shower? REPLAY. Then there are times where I'd like to hit "pause." Like anytime my three kids do something cute that makes me smile. Mid-June my family and I were on the Boardwalk at the rides at Playland. Finn had just stepped off the Swings, when he yelled, "that ride was awesome!" His enthusiasm was so great, that I immediately wanted to ride it again with him. And I did. The three of us, my oldest son Salem joined in, went back up the steel ramp and onto the Swings. Now, at this point it had been a while since I was on the Swings. I was pregnant all last year (it felt like ten
U
years) and couldn't ride the rides at all. So when the Swings started to make their ascent into the sky, I got excited. They began to circle and the three of us began to soar. Pretty soon we were flying high and one by one, we each reached our hands out as if we were birds. That's when I looked out and saw the gorgeous Atlantic Ocean. PAUSE. Ocean City has so many pauseworthy moments. As I write this, it's the third week of June and every time I head into OC, I get the amazing fragrance of roses in the air. This gives stopping to smell the roses a new meaning, since their robust fragrance permeates so many parts of the island each June. So stop and smell the roses, hit pause on those moments that make you smile and fast forward those pesky ones that sneak in from time to time. See you on the island.

Bill Godfrey chats it up with Susan Adair from Crazy Susan's Cookies
CAUGHT up with “Crazy” Susan Adair of Crazy Susan’s Cookies by phone as she was headed somewhere in the car with her mom and granddaughter for some family time. Family is important to Susan. Family get-togethers were the original reasons Susan started making her now-famous cookies. She'd take cookies to family events and hers were always the first to go. Family members kept telling her she should open her own bakery. After deciding to take the plunge, Susan still couldn’t decide on a name. One day at a family gathering cousin Peter asked “who made the cookies?” Someone replied “Susan,” to which Peter answered “Crazy Susan?” and the name stuck. Susan’s business grew and she soon found herself the subject of a Food Network reality show, “Tough Cookies.” She also expanded with a store on the Boardwalk and another store in Voorhees. But all that growth was interfering with family and taking the fun out of her life. So she cut back to the one store in Ocean City and she’s happier for the move. You can stop in her original store on West Avenue for a batch of her famous cookies, and while there you might also get a free therapy session – Susan is good at keeping your secrets. Read on… OC mag: Hi Susan, so glad I caught up with you. CS: Hold on, you called a little early. I need to turn off the GPS so we can talk (the computerized woman’s voice can be heard saying “turn right in four point three miles…). We –my mom and my granddaughter – we’re on our way to get our hair cut. Okay, now it’s off...
OC mag: So start at the beginning, how did “Crazy Susan’s” come to be? CS: When I was a teenager, a friend of mine had a chocolate chip cookie recipe that I loved. It was a secret family recipe. When I was in my 20s they gave me the recipe as a gift and I started to make chocolate chip cookies. I started bringing them to parties and people loved them. One time a guy that owned a business asked if I would make them for his clients for the holidays. So it started to grow a little and I decided to open a cookie store. I had lost my cousin to ovarian cancer and it lit something inside me. I decided I didn’t want to spend my life behind a desk and that’s how I got started. OC mag: And you decided to start in Ocean City? CS: Yes. I used to do it out of my house but in order to sell to the public you need a health-inspected kitchen. It just happened that a guy I’d made cookies for had a building in Ocean City and that’s how I wound up in Ocean City. OC mag: So you were on the

Food Network for a season! How’d the TV show go? CS: It went pretty well. It gave us national exposure – you can’t pay for that kind of advertising. It really opened up my internet business. It was fun to do and I met a lot of nice people. Plus I learned how they film stuff. It was a fun experience. OC mag: So what’s your favorite cookie?
CS: My favorite is peanut butter dipped in chocolate. I love anything peanut butter. OC mag: What’s your favorite thing about Ocean City? CS: I love Ocean City. It’s one of my favorite places in the whole world. I feel safe and at home in that store and very calm. I love the people that come in. OC mag: Have you always been

an Ocean City lover? CS: Well, as teenagers we went to Wildwood because there were bars and stuff. You know, we liked to go out. But I was a teenager then. Now I love Ocean City for the opposite reason – because there’s no booze. OC mag: How long have you been in Ocean City? CS: Eight years. OC mag: Got any favorite stories or anything from those years? CS: I’m gonna tell you; people that come in tell me their deepest darkest secrets. I love to talk to people and people seem to open up to me. I would never repeat anything. People like to talk to me and get things off their chest. That’s why I like the store – it’s not a corporation. It’s where people can come in and talk. I like people and I want to hear about their lives. I’ve met interesting people and heard a lot of interesting stories. OC mag: Have you always been that way? People opening up to you… CS: Yes. I come from a big family so I’m used to hearing about people’s lives. Sometimes people suppress what’s going on, but in my family
YEAR ROUND!
we’re pretty open about what’s going on. I’m used to that openness. OC mag: You have a big family? CS: Oh yes. I have 30 first cousins and the majority are in South Jersey. OC mag: You used to have a second store in Voorhees… CS: I did. But I was working 70 to 80 hours per week, 12 months a year and I had no life. So now I just have the Ocean City store. I do a lot of my own baking and it was hard to keep two stores. It became too stressful. I need a less-stressful kind of life. OC mag: What do you do when you’re not baking? CS: I have three granddaughters that I just adore including one that’s with me (You can hear her granddaughter in the background saying “hiiiiiiii”). I spend as much time with them as I can. OC mag: Do you ever get to play when you’re in Ocean City? CS: Not too much. I’m usually working. But when I do take a break I like to walk down Asbury Avenue and stop in the stores. A lot of people are always asking about other stores so I like to know what’s going on out there.
OC mag: What’s new this year? CS: We’re renovating the store this year – it’s going to be more functional and more colorful too. And we’re adding some new items. We’re looking forward to a great season. I think Ocean City will be booming this year. OC mag: Is there one person who you would like to walk into your store? CS: My dad. I lost my dad last July. OC mag: So I need to know… are you crazy? CS: Well, my mother’s in the background shaking her head yes. Let’s just say I’m high-spirited.
Don’t Call it a Comeback.

You know that episode of Seinfeld where George pulls the "leave behind?" As he's leaving the sable hat to ensure a second date with a girl, he sings, "Costanza" to the tune of "By Mennen." I know Red's doesn't leave anything behind when I get take out, but about a week after my meal I find myself singing, "Burrito." And I know I have to have a second date, so to speak. All of the food at Red's Jersey Mex is delish. It's steaming hot, with just enough spice to wake up your taste buds without scaring them. My favorite dish is the chicken super burrito. It's so much better than any of those lame non-super burritos. I get it to go, homemade chips on the side and with extra guac. And in spring and fall, me gusta el creamy tomato soup and el chicken corn chowder. Que onda guero?

They say every region of Mexico believes its food is the authentic Mexican cuisine. Cinco de Mayo owner Roberto Marroquin and his wife Rosa hail from Oaxaca, Mexico so when they claim to be making authentic Mexican cuisine, I believe them. It’s not like I’m an aficionado of cuisine from Oaxaca, but I know delicious and Roberto makes good food. The last time I was in the place was hopping – that’s a good sign. I ordered the tostadas which were clean, fresh and delicious - great texture from both the crispy tortilla and the fresh toppings. I also had the chicken club tacos which came with rice and beans. They are such a great complement to the tacos – the sides are part of the meal and not just an afterthought. I also recommend the fajitas and the chiles rellenos. Extensive menu and all of it properly prepared. Yum! I mean delicioso!

famished foodie CIAO BELLA!
W
HEN the family and I arrived at the recently renovated and newly fabulous Bennie’s Bread and Italian Market at the corner of 12th and Asbury, we were as desert nomads; famished, weary and in need of a cool place to chill. And lucky for us we found an oasis of deliciousness complete with brick oven pizza and a friendly staff to mend our parched palettes. Bennie’s – and its fabulous rolls, tomato pies and other items – has been around for a long time. I’m pretty sure that when the Lake brothers (the founders of Ocean City) first landed on Peck’s Beach they found sun, sand and Bennie’s Bread. But the “new” Bennie’s Bread is, like, wow! New space, new menu, new uniforms, new pizza oven – the old Bennie’s was great, but the new Bennie’s is, you know, “wow!” The family – Apollonia, Sonny, Michael, Mary and I – had heard reports of the new Bennie’s, so of course we had to see for ourselves. We arrived ravenous on a perfect Ocean City Sunday (are there any other kind?). As is the norm with three kids in tow – we were hungry, harried and hoping for a moment’s peace. We managed to keep the kids semi-controlled as we perused the menu. Thankfully the staff at Bennie’s is fast and friendly and we had the kids munching on their meals in no time while Apollonia and I sat back and breathed a sigh of relief. What was once Bennie’s Bread and Rolls is now Bennie’s Bread and Italian Market and owner Ralph DiClemente has done a fantastic job with the upgrade. The old Bennie’s was a great store with quality products, but the new Bennie’s is a true Italian market similar to what you’d find in Philadelphia or New York. I cornered Ralph and made him dish on the renovations. “The tenant next door moved out before (Hurricane) Sandy and after Sandy I had to gut the place so I thought ‘what the heck?’ This was something my wife and I were talking about for a long time. So we went for
10
Bennie's Bread and Italian Market opens it,” said Ralph. The renovations are extensive. Ralph, along with his family who helps him with the business, took over the space next door (the old martial arts school) and transformed the entire business. They enlarged, added a wood-fired pizza oven as well Italian specialties to their display cases including chicken cutlets, meatballs, olive oils and more. “We’re really happy with how it turned out,” said Ralph. “We’ve had a great response. This is something different from what you normally see in Ocean City and people really like it.” We were duly impressed with the new look, but we were also very hungry so we stopped gawking and focused on eating. There’s no waitress service and Bennie’s is really not a sit-down restaurant. Still, there are a couple tables inside and several out on the sidewalk. We found eating on site quite pleasant and totally delicious. We got lucky and landed one of the bar tables inside near the big picture window. There are only two tables inside but the kids really liked the tall chairs, so we sat inside (I pick my battles. If the kids want to eat inside even though it’s beautiful outside, then we eat inside). There were two chairs so Apollonia and I sat on the window ledge. Mary sat in her stroller. It actually worked quite well. As usual we put the staff to the test. We ordered at the counter, then changed our order, then we added to our order – none of it was any problem for the Bennie’s crew, especially Ralph’s

daughter Selina who’s been working with her dad for many years and is a real pro behind the counter. They smiled the whole time and I really liked that. “My family has always helped out – the kids have been working with me since they were seven,” said Ralph. Our kids wanted chicken fingers but Bennie’s didn’t quite have this item. C’mon, this is a real Italian market! No "from frozen" stuff here. What Bennie’s had were prepared chicken cutlets that
they easily warmed and served. The kids loved them. Apollonia and I started with a couple arancini, a Sicilian specialty that’s basically a fried rice ball coated in bread crumbs. The texture was perfect and they had such a great taste with a sweet start and just a hint of a bite at the end thanks to some spicy meatball in the middle. Our meals were served in cute little to-go boxes and it reminded me of a

picnic. The boxes are great to-go vessels and Bennie’s really packs an attractive take out bag. But the boxes served us nicely for our sit-down and the staff gave us paper plates. Of course we ordered a wood-fired pizza. We decided on the “Quattro’ Formaggi” – the four cheese pizza. The kids were fascinated by the chromecovered oven and the way Ralph’s son Gianni handled the pizzas going in and out. The pizza itself was excellent. The crust was thin, but not too crispy. The cheese was a fresh mozzarella and brought contrast and a yummy chew to the texture and the sauce – which can make or break the entire pie – was a great ending to a well-prepared slice. Next (hey, we were hungry!) came a chicken cutlet sandwich with sharp provolone and broccoli raab on a Bennie’s roll. They say that “everything tastes betta’ on a Bennie’s” and I think they’re right. The roll makes up more than 50 percent of the sandwich so if the roll is sub-par, then you’ve already lost. But Bennie’s does rolls right and the crispy-outside, tender-inside roll they produce is one of the reasons Bennie’s is crowded every summer.
Their chicken is touted as free of hormones and antibiotics which is important for me and I think a good business decision on Bennie’s part. Almost everyone is looking for fewer chemicals in their food and I’m happy to see it on local menus. Oh and it was done just right. That’s no easy feat. Chicken off the bone can be dry if you’re not careful, but the kids devoured their chicken as did Apollonia and myself. And don’t forget that Bennie’s has a great selection of dulces to finish your meal, including cannoli, muffins, cookies, tiramisu and more. The boys got a giant blueberry muffin which they split. I wish I’d had a chance to sample it, but I did not; it was gone before I blinked. Apollonia and I split a bag of cookies and cream puffs which was perfect since we needed to jet and portable dessert is a good thing. We thanked everyone for a great experience, gathered our belongings and headed back into the world a little less crazy and a lot more happy. Get yourself some Bennie’s this summer, you’ll thank me for the recommendation.

"Our favorite eatery is the Sindia Restaurant, 801 Plymouth Place in Ocean City. We started going there with our grandson about three years ago for breakfast and found out they also have great dinners. Everything is made fresh on the premises and the prices are very reasonable. They have a baker that makes unbelievable desserts. The apple cobbler is to die for!" – Allan Ruhling Want to WIN $15 to a local shop or restaurant? RANDOM EMPLOYEES Interviews with a few hard workers in OC
FACEBOOK FAN OF THE MONTH Jennifer Wilson Wean
CHANDLER PINKERTON Yianni's Cafe Favorite thing on the menu? I’m not really sure, I just started working here. I’m here for the summer. I’m from Jupiter, Florida. Do you like working at Yianni's Cafe so far? Yeah, it’s a nice place. Favorite color? Blue. Favorite music genre? Rap. Last movie you watched? Anchorman 2. Preferred mode of transportation? Car. I drive a Jeep. Coffee, tea, or neither? Tea. What do you do in your spare time? I like to play basketball and workout.
MEGHAN WEST Ocean Treasures If you were to buy something from Ocean Treasures right now, what would it be? The “Hey Jude” sign by Lyricology. What do you do when you’re not working at Ocean Treasures? Lay on the beach at night to look at the stars and jump into the ocean. What’s your favorite spot in Ocean City? My old home on 18th Street that I rented out last summer with my two best friends. What’s the last thing you ate? Raw cashews. What’s the most memorable moment/experience you had in the last year? Just riding around in the Florida sunshine with the windows down signing loudly to blasting music with all the people I love. I was there as part of the Disney College Program, working as a tour guide in Disneyworld. AARON BRUNHOFER Discovery Seashell Museum How long have you worked here? For about five years. What’s the coolest thing you have in this museum? Probably the megalodon teeth,
the fossils. What do you like to do when you’re not working? If I don’t have to make crab cages, I’m either reading or… yeah, I guess I read a lot. Favorite author or book? Well I just finished reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. What’s your favorite boardwalk snack? Johnson’s Popcorn. - Interviews and photos by Caleigh Gran
"Ocean City is in my blood. It's my happy place, my Zen" Every month we pick a random Facebook fan and give them a gift certificate for an OC business in exchange for a small interview. Jennifer won a $25 gift certificate to Ready's Restaurant. For your chance to win, LIKE our page at www.facebook.com/ oceancitymagazine. How long have you been coming to OCNJ? My entire family has been coming to OCNJ since 1950. We have a family home at 55th and Asbury and have been coming here my whole life. It's in my blood, my happy place, my Zen if you will. That was why we got married here; it's just part of who I am. Where are you from? When we aren't in OC, we reside in Swarthmore, Pa. What's your favorite beach spot on the island and why? My favorite beach spot is at 58th Street. My husband Michael and I were married on the beach in front of the pavilion. Plus, its next to the 59th Street Pier or what's left. I have had a fascination / love for that pier my whole life. When we go to the beach that's where you will find me, not far from the pier. What's in your beach bag? My beach bag has beach tags, sunglasses, sunblock, my cell phone and camera. I'm always snapping pics of the beach and water and my kids Madison and Alexander playing in the sand (my nickname is Paparazzi because I'm always taking
pictures). What's on your iPod and why? I don't have an iPod. When I am at the beach I LOVE listening to the waves crashing, seagulls cawing, kids splashing, parents planning that night's events – all that "beach chatter" is my happy music to listen to at the beach. Where do you like to go to eat in OC and why? I love 16th Street Seafood – awesome fried flounder and Cathy's 14th Street Bakery has fabulous creamfilled donuts. But one night has to be an eat-your-way-up-the-Boards night which is pizza from Manco & Manco; salt & vinegar fries from Curly's Fries; caramel popcorn with the lid off from Johnson's Popcorn; almond macaroons and salt water taffy from Shriver's; vanilla /chocolate swirl cone from Kohr's and funnel cake at the Promenade! Then we take a rest at the Music Pier and do it all over again. Oh and I love Ocean City Coffee Company. I'm there three times a day! Biking or walking on the Boards? I love walking the Boards, its calming and relaxing. You can take your time leisurely watching the ocean on one side and when you get to the end walk down the store side and shop! Of course, during our vacation, one day we rent a surrey and go for a ride just the four of us for family time. That's what OC is – the best in family vacations, why we'll love it forever and never go anyplace else!

six questions
GOOD COUNCIL Sam Florio chats with Ocean City Council President Tony Wilson
HEY MR. WILSON
I
WALKED into Council President Tony Wilson’s office at Wilson Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning and was immediately in awe of the room’s walls. They were covered with photos of family, homemade cards and colored pictures. It took all of one second to see the many hats he wears. Aside from being a business owner and father, Tony is also an integral part in making Ocean City the best town it can be. I talked with Councilman Tony to find out the details of how he accomplishes that. What made you decide to become a part of the Ocean City Council? I’ve been in the community my entire life. I live here, was born and raised here. I have a family business in Ocean City and I raised my family here. Not only did my mom and dad raised me here, but my mother’s mother and father raised her here. It was time for me to give back to the community. What does a typical day in the life of Tony Wilson consist of? I come to work at Wilson Plumbing Heating and Air Conditioning where I am the owner and operator. I go check on my jobs and figure out what other tasks I have to perform that day, be it council, business related, family related – not
Council President Tony Wilson runs Wilson Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning. Photo by Sam Florio
necessarily in any particular order. Was Wilson Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning your first job? Yes. I loved it so much that I told my father I didn’t want to go to college, but he insisted that I go. It’s made me a better person and more wellrounded person. I’ve never had another job. The only other job I’ve ever had was city council, and I’ve managed to become very happy doing everything that I do. What does your job as council president entail? I like to think that my job is the liaison between the administration and the rest of the council members. I am on the phone with my co-council daily, depending on what issues come up. I also look to make sure that I represent my constituency, the people from 12th to 26th, and make sure I bring their issues and concerns to the administration to make sure that we contend with those issues as necessary. Some of your platforms are beach and Boardwalk replenishment, what are your plans regarding those? I actually have three things that I have been working on. The Boardwalk is well underway. That is funded in the capital plan for the next ten years. We will be doing a block or more a year;
redoing the substructure. In reference to the beach replenishment, we have a plan with the state and the Federal Government for the south-end beaches that should take place this fall. The north end is already on a 50-year cycle – every three years we are going to get beach replenishment from the federal government. We are well on track to make sure that our beaches are protected for years to come. And I have to mention the bay, we are constantly in talks to figure out how best to dispose of the dredge material. There are an awful lot of different things that we are exploring to better our community. How do you keep so organized? You know, I have great people around me. My sister is a huge asset in my office. My wife is very integral in making sure she keeps my social calendar in check. Of course I have to have some organizational skills myself in order to keep it together. I just have to say it does take some more time. You can’t possibly devote this much time without the support of your family. I have my wife Melissa, my daughter Julia, and my son, Tony, and they have been very supportive throughout. I could not have done it without them and the sacrifices that they’ve made so that I can do the things that I do.

it’s history THE HOTELS THAT BUILT OCEAN CITY Fred Miller on Days Gone By
ROOMIE
S
UPPLYING lodging and food for its visitors has been the major business of Ocean City from its earliest days. Parker Miller, the first inhabitant of the island, offered room and shelter to the group of men who came to survey, construct the streets, and cut brush for the new town. The first project of the city’s developers was to erect a rooming house for the men who came to build the city’s structures. Called Pioneer Cottage, the rooming house was on Asbury Avenue near Seventh Street. By 1883, only four years after its 1879 founding, Ocean City was a growing resort with six hotels already built on the island. The Piqua, a small hotel across from the camp grounds, was the first. Three hotels, the Brighton Hotel, which opened in 1880 as the Ocean Hotel, the Wesley House, opened in 1881, and the Illinois House, opened in 1883, were all large hotels. Two other small hotels, Lake

An early listing of hotels has Aldine Cottage at Ninth Street and West Avenue, Coxes Cottage at Seventh Street and Asbury Avenue, Holly Grove Cottage at Central Avenue between Fourth and Fifth Streets, Haven House at Sixth Street and Ocean Avenue, and Minetola Cottage on Fourth Street near Asbury Avenue. There is no other information about them and it is not known how long they existed. Another guest house and 15 more hotels had been built on the island by 1895. Rooms at one of the large hotels such as the Emmett at Eighth Street and Central Avenue, the Lafayette at 13th Street and Central Avenue, or the Hewlings at Ninth Street and Wesley Avenue could be had for $15 per week. A room, with meals included, could be rented at the smaller hotels for between 75 cents and $2 per day. Hotel guests were returning year after year, and it was clear that Ocean City was quickly

A
S WE all know, it’s not difficult to find the perfect snack or souvenir on the Boardwalk. However, it can be a little more tricky trying to find a store that sells trendy, affordable clothes – especially if you’re a guy. Though it's tempting to wear Ocean City tees and sweats all the time, right? Luckily, we have great shops here and one of them is Cloud 9. This store caters to all your fashion needs at reasonable prices. They have bathing suits, bags, dresses, comfy clothes, and walls filled with jewelry. Most of the items I picked up were less than $20
each. I found a pair of black highwaisted shorts and matched it with a coral crop top. This combination is definitely in style right now, but it’s also a great transition outfit. You can wear it during those hot summer days and just throw a loose cardigan over top for chilly nights on the boards. For the guys, I selected an easy, casual outfit. A t-shirt, shorts, and sunglasses may sound simple, but it can still look put-together if done the right way. 976 Boardwalk, Ocean City, (609) 3998989 - Text and photos by Caleigh Gran

T

HE Ocean City Historical Museum celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year, and what better way to honor this milestone then to talk about its precious pieces of Ocean City history, stories of royalty and more. We sat with Jeff McGranahan, the museum’s executive director, to find out what it takes to run this treasure trove of OC history. OC mag: Who works at the museum, other than you, of course? Jeff: I am full-time and we have another part-time staff person, but other than that, the whole rest of our operation is volunteers. We have about 30 volunteers that help us out in all manners of things: from working on the exhibits, to helping out at the front desk, to working in the gift shop, to organizing the photographs. Much of what gets done, gets done by volunteers. OC mag: How did you fall in love with Ocean City enough to feel so passionate about preserving its history? Jeff: Prior to coming here on staff I had probably come to Ocean City two dozen times. Because my wife is from Egg Harbor Township, I did most of my visiting while we were dating. My first experience on a beach was here in OC. When I think about the beach, its Ocean City. I love the city and I have a natural aptitude when it comes to history. Remembering facts and details comes easily to me. And so, just being in a place like this, you begin to admire it. I’m very happy to be here. OC mag: How do you find items for the museum?
Kermit was wrong when he said it isn’t easy being green. At the Ocean City Municipal Golf Course, you’ll find easy access, a fun staff and beautiful green expanses right next to the marshes. It’s easy to spend a few hours on our 12-hole, par 3 course. Either in the morning before the beach or after a day of surf and sand. Jeff: Well, the mission of the museum is to preserve the history of Ocean City – be it a dress that someone wore on the Boardwalk, to a plate somebody in Ocean City may have served dinner from, to photographs of Ocean City. I had an interesting phone call earlier this week about a woman whose parents and grandparents had come to Ocean City, and she still has a beach umbrella they used when her parents were kids. We are talking about the 1940s! It’s still in good shape, it’s canvas – green with white stars. And I just can’t imagine, I can’t wait to see it because you know, most of the pictures from that time period are in black and white, and you look at pictures of the beach with all of those umbrellas and you wonder what those colors really look like. We say that about 90 percent of the [museum’s] collection is donated. OC mag: When you have to find the back story of an item, how do you start? Jeff: The surfboard (in the museum’s exhibit) is the epitome of a great donation. The man who purchased the surfboard in 1968 kept
the receipt, kept the promotional materials, kept photographs of the first time he surfed on the surfboard, wrote us an outline of his memories and things happening in Ocean City at that time. On the other hand, this billboard (another piece in the museum) was donated by the fire department. The interesting thing about the billboard is that it talks about something that the mayor was protesting, but we don’t know the protest. It is signed by the mayor, who only served one term so we narrowed it down. We pour over the newspapers, and we go to the Ocean City Sentinel. The Sentinel has opened up some theories for us, but we don’t have a specific source. OC mag: So you guys are like detectives? Jeff: We are detectives, except we don’t wear hats! OC mag: Is there an exhibit you are working on currently? Jeff: The Kelly family, specifically Grace Kelly, the Oscar winning actress, summered in Ocean City. Grace Kelly, for a while there, was synonymous with Ocean City. Since her death, in the ‘80s, there are a
lot of people who may not know who Grace Kelly was. One of the things we wanted to do with this new exhibit is, yes, discuss Ocean City, but put her in a better context of her acting career. And despite the fact that she became royalty [after marrying the Prince of Monaco], she was always Ocean City royalty. They were approachable, they went out on the beach. We’ve heard countless stories of people interacting with them on the beach and knowing them. And I think that just says a lot about them as a family, and Grace in particular. OC mag: Do you go out and seek people who have items to give you? Jeff: This is a great question because we are on the cusp of launching a new project. This is the 50th Anniversary of the museum. The museum opened in the ‘60s. That was a very fascinating period of time for the people who lived through it and for us who have come after. When people go through their attics and find things from 50 years ago, (we want them to think) “this should go to the museum.” A lot of those things are interesting – the fashion,
Wonderland Pier opened in the 1960s. So, there are lots of interesting pieces from that time period, and it is our job to help save those items and share those stories with people. OC mag: Will this new stuff become an exhibit? Jeff: It will eventually have to become an exhibit. We actually have a surfboard from 1968 and that interesting billboard was from 1963, but one of the things about new donations is if the piece comes with a story attached – that’s wonderful, but if it just shows up on your doorstep we need to find the story to it. OC mag: Is there anything else you wanted to share with us? Jeff: The museum is a private non-profit. While we are supported by the city, we are dependent upon members of the museum. We are currently running a membership campaign. If anyone is interested in supporting the museum then we hope that they contact us. The Ocean City Historical Museum is located at 1735 Simpson Avenue. They can be reached at (609) 3991801 or www.ocnjmuseum.org.

I
KIDS PLAY Ocean City Theatre Company has performances all year long. Here are a few moments from last year’s children’s series. This year, performances include Stuart Little, The Berenstain Bears, Cinderella, and The Cat in the Hat.

T’S so inspiring to meet someone who’s passionate about what they do. When I got off the phone with Michael Hartman, the artistic director for the Greater Ocean City Theatre Company, I told him it was great speaking with him – and I truly meant it. He’s a man who loves what he does and enjoys sharing his passion with others. Even though I’m not the biggest theatre enthusiast (I rarely watch movies or television) I hung up feeling optimistic about life, and also like I really wanted to go see the company’s next production. Hartman does it all – fundraising, casting, directing, teaching, you name it. He’s also in charge of hiring dozens of production team members and up to 135 actors and performers each season. He’s a busy guy,
but I got the impression that he wouldn’t trade his job for anything in the world. “It’s quite an undertaking. It’s crazy. But when you get to do what you love to do, it’s really rewarding and exciting. It’s special to be able to say that I get to do what I love,” he said. Just one of the many things on Michael’s plate this summer is the Children’s Theatre Series. When I first heard about it, I initially thought it was a program where kids perform, sort of like a grade school drama club. The OCTC does have a junior company for grades 6-12, but the Children’s Theatre Series is something different. As Michael explained to me, “It’s a five-show series that actually features professional performers in productions that are geared for children and families.” This summer they’re doing The Cat in the Hat, Cinderella, The
trends
Berenstain Bears, How I Became a Pirate, and Stuart Little. OC mag: Which show are you most looking forward to this summer? Michael: I would say, actually, that out of any show we’re doing, I’m most looking forward to the last show of the summer. We’re doing a show called Swing! It’s a show that’s not really done often. It’s all singing and dance. It’s about swing-dancing and the swingdancing era. So I’m really excited for that because it’s totally different than anything we’ve ever done and it’s going to be really impressive, over-the-top, and really cool. OC mag: Which show of all the ones you’ve produced stands out in your mind as being the most memorable? Michael: Honestly, out of all the shows we’ve done, I really, really enjoyed when we did Cinderella a couple years ago. It was magical to see the kids in the audience be so glued to the story and be totally engaged. We had so many little girls come dressed as Cinderella. It was almost like a Disney experience right here in Ocean City. And the show itself features music that’s more for older generations because it’s actually a very old musical. So it was also neat to see an 80-year-old and an eight-year-
old involved and moved by the same production. That’s pretty hard to find. I just remember on closing night when the cast was taking their bows, I was literally emotional. It was so hard for me to see the show end. It was too soon. OC Mag: Ocean City is a vacation destination. Does this influence you to produce shows that are feel-good and happy? Michael: Yeah, I mean we’re definitely embracing the mindset of America’s Greatest Family Resort. And we’ve always loved the series because we also find that it’s the first time that some kids are exposed to theatre and they might find something new to get involved in. Not only is it a great chance to perform something that’s happy and light, it’s also a great way to introduce a potential new hobby to the kids. OC mag: Have you noticed any differences in adult and junior theatre trends? Michael: Children’s theatre is definitely more over the top, energy wise. As far as adult, shows are more traditional and the energy is very different. OC mag: Are you influenced at all by Broadway? Michael: A little bit. For the children’s

series, we try to use more literature and educational things as an influence because it provides a nice opportunity to incorporate a lot of educational stuff into the kids’ summer without them necessarily realizing it. It doesn’t usually feature shows that are on Broadway; it’s more storybooks and fairytales. OC mag: Have you noticed any trends in the popularity of theatre in general? Michael: I definitely think that in some ways reality TV shows like America’s Got Talent, American Idol, and Dancing with the Stars have actually made theatre more popular. It’s more cool now. At the same time theatre isn’t as much of an experience or priority as it used to be. I think families used to make going to see a show part of their regular routines. And now with budgetconscience families, going to see live shows isn’t as much of a priority. OC mag: What does better – the crowd favorites or the unique ones like Swing! that is less known? Michael: Unfortunately, people like to see what they know and what they’re comfortable with – as with anything in life. It’s like deciding between two restaurants, you go to the one you know you’ll enjoy. Same thing with shows. If
they’re familiar with it and are able to sing a song from it, it’s more successful. It’s just human nature, being afraid to think outside the box and experience something new. So I think we try to do a really great job of balancing things that are recognizable with some things people don’t really know. They’ll trust us because they’ve seen the things they like, and that way they’ll feel comfortable going to see something new. OC mag: How did you personally get involved in theatre? Michael: I got involved in high school. I was involved in choir all throughout grade school. Friends I had in the music program suggested I audition for the musical and that’s sort of where the path led. I always say that I wish I had an opportunity like the kids have now with the Children’s Series and Junior Company. As a child, I never really put it together that theatre was something I could be involved in. For a complete schedule and to purchase tickets, visit www. oceancitytheatrecompany.com

A
VISIT from the Goon Squad tells the tale, or tales, of Bennie, a washed up music producer, and Sasha, a kleptomaniac and Bennie’s assistant. Where that may not sound interesting right off the bat, Jennifer Egan finds a way to make the most realistic of lives seem captivating. She creates an intricate web of stories and skillfully reveals the past of Bennie and Sasha’s friends and acquaintances. Egan brilliantly portrays how time and fate affect the way we live our lives and rob the youth and innocence of her characters. “Time is a goon, right?,” says Bosco, an old and ailing musician. Music beats through every page and allows every chapter, and story, to flow like that perfect song you just can’t get enough of. It is up to you to decide whether or not A Visit from the Goon Squad is a collection of interlocking short stories, or an uniquely written novel. But it is the perfect book for any type of reader. For those of you who are just getting back to reading, each chapter can be read at random, in any order and whenever you feel like. For the adamant readers out there, the novel weaves, twists and turns and it is up to you to connect the dots. Egan says one of her most important influences when writing this novel is a much loved HBO Series, The Sopranos. Egan may not have written any Italian mob scenes, but they share the importance and value of family and kinship and the fear of fleeting time. A 2010 Pulitzer Prize Winner for Fiction, A Visit from the Goon Squad is “an inventive investigation of growing up and growing old” and a must read this summer. - Sam Florio NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST AS OF JUNE 22 Hardcover Fiction 1. Stepping up to the first
hole, she gracefully drops the ball down onto the mat, making sure it’s directly lined up with the target. She takes a few practice swings and a couple of deep breaths. The pressure is on. A bead of sweat drips down her forehead. She goes for it, admiring the beauty and skill of such a hit… and then watches in horror as the ball smacks against the border and catapults into the little pond. As it sinks to its demise, her hopes of having a perfect score are dashed. Okay, this is a total exaggeration, but let’s be honest, mini golf is hard! Or maybe it’s just my fellow writer Sam and I that are really bad at it. I’m sure most of you have played at one of the ten places in Ocean City. The Congo Falls gorilla, the Tokens’ “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” and Playland’s caged alligator “Chewie” are Boardwalk icons, after all. But have you ever had a mini golf tournament? That is, have you challenged your family and friends to tackle multiple courses back-toback? I have.
In mid-June, Sam and I golfed at three different courses in the same night: Pirate Island, Golden Galleon, and Medieval Fantasy. This is a fun way to spice up the typical game and get to try new courses you haven’t played before. Best two out of three – go! Or not. We soon discovered neither of us were any good and stopped keeping score after the first game. Here’s how our adventure played out: we started at Pirate Island, one of the few mini golf courses that’s not on the Boardwalk. It wasn’t as crowded as the other two and was larger than them too, which allowed us to take our time and enjoy the scenery. There were lots of little waterfalls, a bridge and hills. The whole course is outdoors - you’ve seen it - it’s the course that greets you on the right as you head east on Ninth Street. If you time your game properly, you can watch the sunset and relax in the evening breeze as you play. I even won a free game on the 18th – don’t get too excited, this had nothing to do with my (lack of) mad mini golf skills. As we went up to the counter
to return our balls and clubs, the attendant instructed us to drop the ball into a little pinball-style game. Sam’s ball fell to the bottom, but mine went into the hole. Immediately the machine started buzzing and a ticket for a free game printed out. It was a nice little surprise to end the course and made us optimistic for the next two. On we went to Golden Galleon. This Boardwalk course has a giant octopus, anchor, ship, lighthouse, and giant pirate - details that made both Sam and I feel more part of the theme. That’s half the fun of mini golf - being surrounded by awesome structures. The holes were a little trickier on this course (good thing we stopped keeping score). This one is all outdoors too; we liked being in the open breeze. Luckily, neither of the balls got lost in the depths of a treacherous pond or waterfall, here, and we swept through all 18 holes without too much sweat. For our third and last destination, we went to Medieval Fantasy. It’s the Boardwalk course that has the wizard standing out front from
the second floor. This was the first time Sam and I had ever played this course and we were both impressed right off the bat. We got to choose a cool tie-dye ball and play holes that were glow-in-the-dark. It reminded me of my laser-light bowling days. Even our teeth were glowing! I attempted to win a free game at this one, but sadly my luck had run out. After playing three courses all with varying degrees of difficult, our golfing skills would have improved a little, right? Nope. That’s okay though. We laughed it off as we handed in our little clubs and made plans to play again soon. To me, mini golf is one of the most universally enjoyable and accessible activities in Ocean City. My hometown only has one place to play, and it’s not nearly as cool and exciting as the courses here. Besides there being a bunch of places to play, you don’t need a reservation and you can go at any time during the day or night, rain or shine. I’ve played while the sun is up and long after it’s gone down; I’ve played with family and with friends; little kids and adults and it’s always a good time. It’s also a fun idea for a date; but in the mini golf wonderland known as OC, that’s just par for the course.

WAVES OF MEMORIES
A REFLECTION ON GROWING UP IN OC BY LIZ CANIZZARO July 2014 OCNJMAGAZINE.COM
39
I hear from my children all the time, “Mom, things are different from when you grew up.” Don’t I know it. What they don’t realize is what they missed out on days gone by, the Ocean City that I knew and loved. America’s Greatest Family Resort before technology to play with, air conditioning to keep you indoors on a hot day and stores closed on Sundays for family time. What it truly meant to grow up as a beach rat in a small family community, that just so happened to be located on an island. I was born and raised in the north end of Ocean City. “The Gardens” is what the locals call it. It’s an area of the island with mostly single family homes. Many of my neighbors were only summer residents. Very few families lived year round. Us year-round children filled only one school bus; it entered the Gardens from Battersea Avenue, rode down Wesley and left the same way. We all played together even though we may have been blocks apart. We were a small tight little hamlet on the end of a eight mile stretch of sand. There was no hiding bad behavior on this island. If you did something wrong, you were either scolded by someone else’s parents (no one was worried about being politically correct when a child needed rearing) or a phone call was quickly placed to your parents. There was no time to even get home to explain or to come up with a good excuse. I remember one time my best friend Amy convinced me that it would be so cool to roller skate in the Superfresh (the one located on 15th and Haven). I remember clearing the corner in the bakery aisle and looking up to see my mother, feet spread shoulder width apart and hands firmly crossed with the expression that she meant business. Someone got to her. I can hear the phone call now, “Connie, just saw your daughter skating by my shopping cart.” Needless to say, I stuck to the sidewalks from then on! I never had a lawn to play on or a tree to climb, but being able to run this island was a child’s dream come true. We never went to a pool, the ocean was free. We 40

didn’t have an outside shower. My mother handles a garden hose like a professional. No one got into her house with a speck of sand on their body. And yes, we drank from the hose and didn’t die from it. I have covered every inch of this island on my bike, with a friend on the handle bars and another on the seat. I didn’t even know what a bike helmet was. My feet were permanently black and forever flat as I never wore shoes once the weather turned warm. I laughed at the ruckus that ensued over Britney Spears leaving a public restroom barefoot. Do you have any idea what these feet have stepped on through 20 years on the Ocean City Boardwalk? When I had my own kids, I made the decision to move off the island because I couldn’t afford the lifestyle my parents had provided for me. My children have a huge yard; it’s never used. The bikes in the garage aren’t ridden. There are trees to climb, but my kids have never seen their neighborhood from a bird’s point of view. These are all the things I thought I may have missed out on growing up on a sandy beach. Looking back, I’d loved to take one more spin with my best friend on the handle bars, walk to the old high school with the crooked gym floor and crowded hallways, meet people from all over the world that come by for just a week’s stay, play street hockey in the alley behind my house and give directions to visitors trying to find a quick way off the island after the July 4 fireworks. What do I love about Ocean City? The memories! Sitting on my front porch with a cold ice tea and watching traffic. The excitement of the island filling up in May and emptying out in September. Sleeping on the porch on a hot summer’s night and letting the crashing ocean rock me to sleep. Things are different these days. What I wouldn’t give to let you have a little piece of the childhood I remember and treasure growing up in the City of Ocean.

The Chip Miller Surf Fest celebrates its 11th year
by Caleigh Gran

OCNJMAGAZINE.COM July 2014
W
H E N people come to Ocean City they usually don’t want to leave. Like many of us, I’ve been coming to Ocean City my entire life. My family vacations here each summer. I thought I’d experienced everything there was to do, seen everything there was to see on the island. I’ve played mini golf at every place on the Boardwalk and have probably been inside every store on Asbury Avenue. I’ve spent countless hours laying on the beach and jumping waves with my brothers. But I never saw anyone surfing. It’s a beach – where are all the pro surfers I watched on Rocket Power? Where’s the big kahuna? Because I’d been here so many years without a surfer spotting, I never had the impression that surfing was really a big deal in OC. Maybe it’s because I never frequented the surfing beaches or woke up early enough to see anyone out on their boards, but I was completely and embarrassingly wrong. There are surfers all over the island – just walk into 7th Street Surf Shop or Heritage Surf Shop and you’ll probably meet one. Ocean City has 15 beaches along its eight-mile stretch where surfers can go to catch a wave – a big necessity. At some of the guarded beaches you get a whistle blown at you just for bringing a raft into the ocean. There are even a couple surfing competitions throughout the summer months, including the Eastern Surfing Association and the Chip Miller Surf Fest. The latter is one of the longest running surfing competitions on the island and shows how extremely supportive and close the surfing community here really is. Every summer for the past 11 years, surfers from up and down the coast come to Ocean
City to either participate in or watch the Chip Miller Surf Fest. It’s a great opportunity for beginners to practice and for pros to show off, but there’s more to this particular contest than competition and prizes. It was started for family, fun, and charity in memory of Ocean City surfer Chip Miller who passed away in 2004 from a rare disease known as amyloidosis. The Chip Miller Charitable Foundation has since made it their mission to increase awareness for this illness, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars. Even so, board member Nick Bricker said, “It’s not about the money. They money is great, because it helps. But the awareness is what’s important.” Amyloidosis occurs when an abnormal protein, amyloid, is deposited and built up in a person’s organ(s). It can affect the heart, kidneys, liver, spleen, nervous system, and gastrointestinal tract, and because it varies so greatly among people, it’s extremely difficult to detect before it’s too late. Nick explains, “It’s one of those diseases that if you don’t catch it on time, there’s no coming back. That’s what happened with Chip. The symptoms are just that of a common cold.” Some of those symptoms include fatigue, irregular heartbeat, swelling of the ankles, enlarged tongue, difficulty swallowing, purplish patches around the eyes, diarrhea, weight loss, and protein found in the urine. As the disease progresses, it can cause serious organ damage. Amyloidosis may have taken Chip’s life, but his family members and friends are doing all they can to prevent others from meeting the same fate. During the Surf Fest they talk about the disease over the PA system all day and bring in guest speakers who’ve been affected by or are dealing with amyloidosis. “Last year we had a woman
down that just got done suffering from it. And it was the first time in six months that she got out of her house since the operation,” said Nick. “It was pretty cool, because all you ever hear about it is who died. You don’t really hear about the survivors.” Even though Chip and his family resided in Carlisle, Pa – where the foundation is now based – they vacationed and surfed in Ocean City. Nick grew up with Lance Miller, Chip’s son, and has a lot fond memories of them, many of which involve the beach. “Mr. Miller would always say, ‘All right everyone – pile in, where do you wanna go?’ And he’d drive us two hours away to surf, buy us all lunch, and we’d just sit on the beach all day,” Nick said. The Chip Miller Foundation, in honor of Chip’s passion for Corvettes, also puts on car shows, races, and golf tournaments. Most of them are held in Pennsylvania. With such a broad range of events, the foundation reaches more groups of people. A key ingredient for raising money. The foundation has earned over $200,000 from the surfing competition alone, and 100 percent of those proceeds are given to charities to help combat amyloidosis. The Chip Miller Surf Fest brings big names in surfing like Dean Randazzo who qualified for the Association of Surfing Professionals Elite Men’s World Tour, and Bethany Hamilton, professional surfer from Hawaii and shark attack survivor. Hamilton attended the Surf Fest for three years. “We were on the radio and she was talking about it. When you have someone with star power like that talking about it, people actually listen,” said Nick. “And now she knows more about it, too.” Because Chip made such an
impact on his family and friends in both the Ocean City and surfing communities, the foundation receives an outpouring of support from people and organizations. This year the Surf Fest is being sponsored by national companies Billabong and Subaru, any many big local businesses, including the surf shops around Ocean City. I spoke with Heritage Surf Shop whose team “knew Chip really, really well.” They support the cause and donate surfboards to the event. “It’s actually a problem because everyone wants to take off work that day to participate in it,” laughed Tracy Heritage-Hennessy, who runs the OC shop. Despite the seriousness of the cause, Nick, the other board members, and the volunteers who organize the event always try to ensure that everyone in attendance has a good time. “It’s competitive for pro surfers and also fun for the kids,” said Nick. “There’s a little bit of everything in it.” Prizes include trophies and other items donated from sponsors. “A lot of the companies will pitch in stuff. Like last year, all the winners got a pair of custom Vans. Second place got a pair of flip flops, and third place got a pair of sunglasses. There’s fun stuff to give away on the beach,” said Nick. According to Bricker, almost everyone who attends walks away with a free t-shirt, too. After talking to Nick and learning about the Chip Miller Foundation, I’ll definitely be in attendance at the competition this summer. The sport, the community, and the great cause it stands for are more than enough reasons to go and support the mission. The 11th Annual Chip Miller Surf Fest is Saturday, July 19, at the 7th Street Surfing Beach.

STAYING HEALTHY ON VACAY It’s easy to derail, but just as easy to stay on track
T
HERE’S nothing like a Jersey Shore vacation to enjoy a break from the day-to-day grind. But when you’re basking in all the Ocean City area has to offer, you don’t have to take a vacation from your healthy-living goals. It’s easier than you think to make smart choices if you are trying to eat healthier, stay active and maintain a healthy weight during your trip. AtlantiCare, southeastern New Jersey’s leading healthcare provider, offers the following tips: Mind Your Menus • We all want to splurge on treats and snacks during vacation, and the Jersey Shore has plenty of tempting options – from boardwalk fare, familystyle restaurants, cafes and more. Keep your diet on track by incorporating whole grains, fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy items, and lean proteins into your choices. • Pick up some delicious fresh produce and fruit from a local farmer’s market or roadside stand. Summer is the perfect time to get your Jersey tomatoes, corn, peaches and blueberries from our local growers. Get a Move On • The Jersey Shore is a wonderful place to enjoy an active lifestyle. Take a walk or run on the beach, rent a bicycle or try a game of beach volleyball. • Instead of lounging poolside all day, jump in and swim some laps. Or try windsurfing, snorkeling or surfing to burn calories. If you need healthcare services while on vacation, call AtlantiCare’s Access Center at (888) 569-1000 or visit www.atlanticare.org.
V-Up Situps
Superman Hold
’VE spent a lot of time researching fitness and trying to differentiate truths from myths. It amazes me how much disparity there is within the health and fitness industry. Logic often goes out the window when “new” and “quick” training methods and products are introduced, promising fast and easy results. My goal as a personal trainer is to help you tell the difference between gimmicks and time-tested moves, and help you think outside the box when it comes to working out. This keeps things interesting, fun and challenging and will lead to a stronger commitment and more promising results. Here are a few exercises meant to engage the core muscles around your midsection. What’s more, you don’t have to force yourself to tighten these muscles as the positioning of your body will do this automatically without thought. Plank: Lay face down on a flat surface and position yourself as if you were about to do a pushup. Now, instead of pushing up with your palms, place your forearms on the ground with your hands connected in front of you (see photo for proper form). Now hold this position either on your knees (easier) or your toes (harder) until form begins to break. Repeat two to three times. V-Up Sit ups: Lying on your back, raise your legs and upper back off the floor about 12 inches. Then with arms out in front, try to push your fingertips through your legs as far as possible. Return slowly to the starting position to complete one repetition. Aim for around 10 to 15 repetitions. Remember to perform each repetition slowly. Repeat sequence two to three times.
Superman Hold: Lying face down on the floor or mat with arms stretched out in front, raise chest and legs off the floor about six inches. Remain in this position for at least 10 to 15 seconds or until form begins to break. Repeat two to three times. This exercise is meant to strengthen the muscles that support the lower back and spine and is important for overall core strength. These exercises are meant to develop core strength and muscle conditioning. With a strong midsection you’ll be less prone to lower-back injury and more capable of performing day-to-day activities. Keep in mind that while these exercises develop core muscles, they alone don’t do much for burning the fat layer which sits above them. In order to lose fat tissue in this area, incorporate cardiovascular (more specifically High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT) in conjunction with a well-rounded resistance training program at least two to three times a week. - Rusty Barham To learn more about this and other fitness related issues or personal training, contact Rusty Barham, Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) at RustyBarhamPT@Gmail.com or (609) 675-8948. Before beginning any exercise program, it’s best to consult your doctor beforehand.

PETS FOR ADOPTION AT HUMANE SOCIETY OF OCEAN CITY Bring home Bruce!
BRUCE
JELLY BEAN
8 years young, Brown & Black Tiger I was surrendered with my sister, Precious, but we are not going to be adopted together. I loved the family that owned me before, but they had terrible allergies! I am friendly, I love kids and other cats. I am a pretty big cat, but I still can move!
3 years, Staffordshire Terrier I am from Pleasantville, NJ which may explain my great personality. I am a very friendly and playful puppy, but I struggle around young children because I forget how much strength I have. I would love a home with lots of toys, like my favorite soccer ball, and a fenced in yard!

PRECIOUS
9 years young, Brown & Black Tiger I, like my brother, Bruce, am a bit large for my size. I can be shy at first, but I am actually very affectionate once I get to know you! I can live with just about anyone, but I have never lived with a dog before. I love to cuddle, and I am very calm and laid back.
