Here's what it looks like in the ad A bigger version to help you Enjoying an impromptu moment to walk the soft Ocean City beach on a beautiful day in May.

An Ocean City Moment Earlier this week, my family and I were in Ocean City having lunch. We were surrounded by loads of happy families enjoying the brilliant sunshine, the Boardwalk, and the beach. Little adorable birdies came flying in looking for a crumb or two, laughter kept rising into the air from surrounding tables, and surrey people were squealing as they took their feet off the peddles and flew down the wooden ramp and onto the street. I looked around at all these revelers and then at my little family. I slowly smiled as I realized – I was having an Ocean City moment. To me, an OC moment is when the island reminds you how lucky you are to be on its sand, by its ocean, in its downtown, you get the idea. It’s a string of these moments that make up the highlight reels of summer. It’s like the saying, “stop and smell the roses,” except let’s change that to, “stop and smell the salt air.” If we don’t stop, hit pause, look around and appreciate where we are at that exact moment, summer has a way of sneaking by quicker. And summer, as least from my beach chair, needs to be put in slow motion for as long as possible. Perhaps your OC moment is watching your kids try Johnson’s Popcorn for the first time… or maybe it’s strolling Downtown with your friends and getting matching flip flops. Maybe it’s that first beach day when your shoulders drop away from your ears as relaxation and the sun’s warm rays set in. As June ushers in summer (woohoo!), it’s time to make the most of all the OC moments with friends and family. Inside these pages, there are tons of ideas on what to eat, where to shop, what to do, and so much more. Find out how a group of local dads took an idea hatched on the beach in OC and turned it into a successful business on page 52. Read the Famished Foodie’s take on The Farm Stand’s healthy grub, meet the new owners of the Chatterbox, the people behind the coastal chic Spotted Whale, go in the kitchen with Red’s Jersey Mex, celebrate Gillian’s Wonderland Pier’s 90th Anniversary, and so much more. From this moment to the next, I wish you tons of fun in the sun. Happy Summer!

Red's Jersey Mex Doing it for the people - by Nick Matousch

“We make everything to order” - Reds Bridgens

O

NCE you find Red’s Jersey Mex Cafe, the payoff for your search is immediate. With the awesome bright paint job, surf-themed framed photographs, and Jimmy Buffet softly playing, I felt as if I was hanging out in a tropical treehouse in Mexico. Even the chairs are painted, giving a worn and adventure-y feel to the place. Some eateries in Ocean City are truly hidden gems. Not every big business is located on Asbury Avenue

or the Boardwalk. Places that the locals really love are away can be anywhere around town. If you do not know all the little back roads this city has, you will miss out on some of the treasured establishments that the locals rave about. Red’s Jersey Mex is one of these places. I’ve lived here all my life, but didn’t discover Red’s until recently. Located in a small strip of businesses at 11th and Haven, this place is definitely off the beaten path.

“I tell everyone that it is on 11th Street, which is next to 10th Street, and off of Haven, which is next to West Avenue,” said Reds Bridgens, the owner of Red’s Jersey Mex. “But even with all of the other joints in Ocean City, we are still getting busier!” Many of the menu items are traditional Mexican dishes with a flair that changes it up from the usual quesadilla. Not to say that they do not have the basics – you can easily order a chicken or beef taco, or even some nachos with no additions, if that’s your

style. But Reds is all for giving people what they want when it comes to what is and is not on the menu. “We have our basic menu, with everything on it,” said Reds. “But it’s not cut and dry. We make everything to order anyway so why not [customize]? Our menu is relatively big and easy to do because the same ingredients are just used in different ways to make different dishes. A lot of the lifeguards and surfers and firefighters have been around and they are all having their own crazy breakfast burrito. They can order straight up off the menu, or customize it, and people like that. They like to have their special burrito.” These custom items really hit the spot. On the day I visited, I had the Pork Bomb Jersey Mex - instead of beef, this is a pulled pork version of a classic burrito. It’s basically a BLT

in burrito form with a nice helping of pork. Everyone has their own way of how they like their bacon cooked – the bacon here was not overly crispy, and not too soft either. Wrapping it up in a tortilla and adding good squeeze of mayonnaise, I was more than ready to take a try at this twist on the traditional sandwich. “Pulled pork is more of an American thing,” said Reds. “But a burrito could be anything wrapped up in a tortilla. We call it the bomb because it has plenty of pork and it is, well, the bomb.” As I ate my Pork Bomb burrito, I couldn’t agree more. I am a huge fan of pulled pork, and throwing a bit of mayonnaise in with it hit a very sweet spot. Reds eagerness to change it up is all a part of his ‘Jersey Mex’ philosophy. Chances are you’ve heard of Tex Mex and Cali Mex styles of Mexican food

throughout the country. But with all the customization he has done to the menu, being in the business for 16 years, and living in such a rich area for food, Reds has campaigned for his own style of Mexican. “Jersey Mex food is not southern or California style,” said Reds. “We are trying to do more specials, and more authentic Mexican stuff, but Jersey is our own style and spin on traditional food, sauce and salsa. We really emphasize homemade sauces. We get our seafood for items like the Bikini Buster salad from Cape May. In the summer we go through two cases of Jersey tomatoes a day just for our salsa. It is our Jersey fresh twist on it all.” The salsa and spices that come out of the kitchen here have just the right amount of spice. While a little spice is good, Reds is all about the flavor that

comes out of his restaurant. All the sauces that they make – from their yogurt lime flavored fish salsa to their hot wings sauces – are made from scratch, and more of a middle of the road level in terms of spicy. “Spicy with flavor,” said Reds. “We can definitely spice it up if someone wants it though. I am a medium level spiciness guy – I want to taste the spiciness and then that after kick of flavor.” “I like it spicy,” said Diego, a cook a Red’s. He laughed as he put on extra salsa verde on an order of sopes, a corn tortilla dish with refried beans. No matter the spiciness or hotness of the food, the Jersey Mex flavor has caught on. “I have been working here 15 years because the food is good,” said Tempest Sloan, one of the employees at Red’s. "The food is good and it’s a local hangout.”

Battle Calzone

Incredible Italian Masterpiece!

Crispy, Chewy, Tasty Perfection!

There’s a running joke between Mr. He Said and me… and it’s about me being a potential mythical creature. No, not a fabulous unicorn with soft, rainbow colored flowing hair. It’s a vampire. Yes, a vampire. It’s because I’m always cold, have low blood pressure and my skin shimmers in sunlight. Okay, perhaps not that last one, but you get the idea. This all changed however when I sat down for the incredible Italian masterpiece known as a calzone from Randazzo’s. This half moon beauty was ooey-gooey and filled with flavor – the strongest note being

If your boss is the maniacal owner of a famous pinstriped baseball team and you’re in charge of bringing his daily calzone for lunch, then rest assured Pizza Station will make you a good one. You don’t want to mess around when Big Stein wants an eggplant calzone! Do you even know what a calzone is? It’s a delightful and gooey mixture of ricotta and mozzarella cheeses, often with meat or vegetables, wrapped in dough and baked to a crispy, chewy, tasty perfection. Who doesn’t love a good calzone? It’s like a portable pizza – since everything is wrapped in the dough it doesn’t leak! Pizza Station makes the dough

garlic, otherwise known as vampire kryptonite. Every bite was perfect, from the creamy ricotta to the buttery mozzarella. Since the calzone was stuffed simply with cheese, it allowed each ingredient to shine without being overshadowed. Even the top was sprinkled with grated cheese, fresh garlic, and herbs. Little pools of savory oil gathered in dough divots that spread as I cut in again and again for more. Pretty soon I had devoured nearly the entire thing. Now I ask, would a vampire be able to do that? The world may never know. Now pass the calzone.

just right, with a slightly crispy crunch and a flavor all its own. I had mine with ham and I appreciate that the ham is sliced, allowing the flavors to mingle easily and making the entire experience more enjoyable. Plus it comes with a delightful marinara dipping sauce that added just the right punch of zing to each bite. If you’re the assistant travelling secretary and you need to impress the Big Stein, go to Pizza Station for your calzone. And yes, you can pronounce it Cal-ZONE-ay!

Famished Foodie

THE FARM STAND AT 14TH

The Famished Foodie takes on this Boardwalk eatery focused on serving up healthy, delish meals

I

SAT back during my meal, surveyed the scene and took a moment to appreciate the beauty of the day. I was enjoying a really tasty lunch at the Farm Stand at 14th with my favorite girls; the fabulous Hermione and the fantastic Luna. The sun was shining that special way it does only in Ocean City, people were walking and biking – it was another glorious day in the OC, and I was lucky enough to be enjoying a delicious lunch away from the responsibilities of a headmaster wizard. “When it’s beautiful outside and the music is playing, it’s like you’re really on vacation here,” said Becky Juzwiak, who along with Bob Harbaugh, opened this cozy eatery last year. “It’s peaceful and relaxing and the whole vibe is authentic. All of us involved here are into this. This is our lifestyle and this is what we want

12 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE JUNE 2019

to share with people.” Becky, AKA “Becky from Johnson’s,” is vice-president and COO at Johnson’s Popcorn and has been at Johnson’s almost her whole life. But when the space below Bob’s Grill became available, she had an idea that a restaurant that trends healthy might do well. So along with Bob they opened the Farm stand at 14th, and haven’t looked back. “I’ll always be “Becky from Johnson’s” she told me, “That’s who I am, but this is cool too.” The Farm Stand’s menu definitely leans into a healthier, lighter, simpler style with plenty of vegan and vegetarian dishes. The menu features one page of thoughtful items that all look tasty.

Becky told me their goal is providing high quality, healthy food for any lifestyle. But make no mistake, there’s something for everybody here. “Bob’s 89 years old and has been in the restaurant business since the day he was born. I was talking to Russell his nephew who’s also been here forever – we’re all Boardwalk lifers – and I said ‘why don’t we do something cool and way more healthy,’ and he said ‘cool, definitely.’ So I get to have so much fun here and I lost 20 pounds last summer, just by eating here.” These guys have a good thing going. The food and the menu are simple but at the same time the dishes are wellprepared and truly tasty. There are vegan and vegetarian dishes, but there’s also burgers and chicken on the menu. I like meals prepared in a healthy way, and I prefer whole foods properly seasoned, cooked and presented. And that’s what’s happening here. There’s not a lot of tofu

and no substitute ingredients. Plus the vibe is so laid back. I felt so comfortable and laid back my entire meal. “We don’t use any stuffers. It’s all whole foods – real food – and it’s all made healthy,” said Becky. “And we try to reduce our waste. This is our lifestyle, this is what we do.” I think this place hits the right note in so many ways. I liked the food, the vibe, the location, the cool people hanging about, and the attitude – these girls here are living a life they enjoy and they simply want to share it. You can’t fake that and that’s why our meal was so good. “Our philosophy is inclusive – not everybody wakes up and all of a sudden changes their entire life. But if you can take small steps then that helps. If you can use just a little less plastic and make smarter food choices, you can be proud of yourself.” I got the chicken tacos which are free-range chicken, cilantro and onions on a corn tortilla. Just delicious in its simplicity. Fresh and light but filling. But filling in a way that’s not heavy in your stomach, know what I mean? We also ordered a batch of sweet potato fries which had a lovely texture and were well seasoned. They complimented my tacos quite well. I like a big box of regular fries – don’t get me wrong – but I gotta tell you these fries were truly enjoyable. They came with a maple brown sugar sauce that I couldn’t get enough of and I dipped

my tacos in it as well. The other sauce was spicy Sriracha and again, I just drank it. These tasty little details really make a meal enjoyable. “These sweet potatoes fries are delicious and I really appreciate them because I’m watching my carbs,” said Luna. For a main course, Luna decided on the Buffalo Cauliflower Caesar Salad, which normally comes with croutons but Luna was on a no-grain fast that day, so no croutons. No croutons? No prob. “I’m doing a grain-free diet, so I really appreciate the fact they have something like this,” said Luna, digging into her

14 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE JUNE 2019

meal. “There are chick peas on it which makes it healthier. It’s really tasty. The buffalo cauliflower isn’t something I’d normally pair with a Caesar salad and it’s awesome.” Hermione ordered the peanut butter and jelly which came with a side of strawberries and a bag of chips, Perfect for the young Hermione. And that’s good thinking; you’re in a family town so have something for everybody, including the kids and the meat eaters. There’s a good looking grassfed beef burger on the menu I think I’ll try next time. So yes there are legitimate vegan and vegetarian dishes but there’s also

a bacon avocado wrap I also must try. So you can tell the burger lovers that they can get a delicious lunch here too. “I think some people – environmentalists, some vegans – get a bad rap for setting a standard that is out of reach," said Becky. "But for us, it doesn’t matter what you’re doing. If you’re wasting one less thing, or just being aware of it, or trying to eat whole foods, that’s a big transition. This is what we stand for and I think it’s inclusive and not exclusive. I’m a big Diet Coke fan and hey if I drink one less Diet Coke, I’m proud of myself!”

The strawberry and vanilla flavors soar in this sweet treat INGREDIENTS 1 cup whole milk* 3/4 cup granulated sugar (I used organic cane sugar) Pinch salt

DIRECTIONS In a medium bowl, whisk together milk, sugar and salt until sugar is dissolved. Stir in heavy cream and vanilla. Cover and refrigerate 1 to 2 hours. Transfer mixture to base of ice cream maker and follow machine's instructions. Once the ice cream is finished mixing, add in sugar wafers and nonpareils. Mix till combined. ADORABLE CREATURE OF THE MONTH

Cottontail Rabbit There are several species of cottontail rabbit, but the eastern cottontail is the most common. This ubiquitous animal can be found from Canada to South America and, in the United States, from the East Coast to the Great Plains. Cottontails range from reddish brown to gray, but all feature the distinctive “cotton ball” tail for which they are named. These rabbits seek out habitat on the fringes of open spaces, such as fields, meadows, and farms, but can adapt to other habitats – including those of humans. They browse at night on grasses and herbs and are fond of garden fare such as peas and, of course, lettuce. In winter, their diet becomes a bit coarse and consists of bark, twigs, and buds. During the day, cottontails often remain hidden in vegetation. If spotted, they flee from prey with a zigzag pattern, sometimes reaching speeds of up to 18 miles an hour.- nationalgeographic.com

The Interview We pop in for a chat with Becky Juzwiak Albertson, Vice President of Johnson's Popcorn my job. Johnson’s keeps me here. Johnson’s is such part of who I am – it is the love of my life and the child I never had. Do you have a favorite childhood memory from Ocean City? Going to the one week field hockey camp in Ocean City over the summer before the season started. It's a week long camp and I always loved going to it. Trish Lefever and her daughter Tracey trained us – they conditioned us to be the most in shape team in the state. What is your day to day like? I'm constantly solving problems. I do the ordering. I will help customers in the front if there is a line. I could be buying sugar and then dealing with a grandmother getting graduation presents or dealing with a manufacturer for one of our machines’ parts. There are so many different aspects of my job, and I like to do it all so I do not lose sight of any of it. Do you have a favorite popcorn flavor? Buttered! It’s really good and I love it.

H

AVING spent most of her life at Johnson’s Popcorn, Rebecca Juzwiak Albertson is rarely called by her full name anymore – most people know her simply as “Becky from Johnson’s.” Practically her whole life has been spent behind the counter, making sure the experience in and out of the kitchen is enjoyable for customers and workers alike. Her taste for the snack – and running the business – has always been of high quality, showing that she is more than just a lifetime lover of popcorn. What is your position at Johnson’s Popcorn? How long have you been there? I'm the vice president. I've been here 24 years and I'll be here until they put me in the ground! What brought you to Johnson’s Popcorn? The current owner John Stauffer was my reading teacher in seventh grade. When I was 14 I went up to him and asked for a job. He hired me and I never left. Have you ever had another job other than Johnson’s Popcorn? I waitressed a few places in the mornings when I was younger, and worked at Johnson’s at night, but I was always working for Johnson’s. You are born and raised in Ocean City. What keeps you here? I'm not in search of something bigger and better because I really love 22 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE JUNE 2019

What are you most excited for this summer? Every summer I look for the nights where it is just 70-72 degrees. Those are always the best nights. Everyone is enjoying themselves and there is nothing better than seeing that. How would your best friend describe you? As a workaholic with high expectations. I like things a certain way, and I have very high expectations. Why has Johnson’s done so well for almost 80 years? Johnson’s is popular with certain generations because it is part of their childhood. When you taste Johnson’s Popcorn and it tastes the same way it did 75 years ago, it takes you back to your happiest moments. What are three things you would do with an empty Johnson’s Popcorn bucket? I already use it as a marker-pen-scissor holder on my desk. They are great for storing anything in the freezer like meatballs or sauce – but you cannot microwave the buckets. The third thing would be to refill my buttered popcorn. How do you define success? Little steps. I truly believe if I solved five problems in a day, it was a success. Sometimes people leave me notes when they graduate from college. I have had former employees tell me they ask themselves “What would Becky do?” – and that is the nicest of compliments! - Photo by Kerri Janto.

>>> A LOOK INSIDE

The Flanders Hotel

by Jennifer Wean

M

Y WHOLE LIFE, our vacations have always been Ocean City. From my earliest memories, I can remember The Flanders Hotel. As a kid, I’d love walking the boards and watching people swimming in their pool. How lucky they were that they had a pool to swim in right on the Boardwalk. My family would be in the shops behind it, in what was once the promenade while I was day dreaming of doing the doggie paddle. As a pre-teen/teenager it would be my landmark… “drop me at Flanders Mom and I’ll meet you back there at 10pm.” The Flanders is an icon of Ocean City. Coming over the causeway you see it rising high along the skyline welcoming you. I’ve been in its lobby, shopped in its stores and eaten in its restaurant, Emily’s, which by the way has an amazing chicken salad sandwich. This summer though, I’m anxious to do an overnight stay inside the historic hotel, specifically in the Penthouses. The Flanders offers traditional hotel rooms to stay in but they also offer top-of-the-line penthouses. “With the onyx breccia marble, 14-carat gold plated master bath, its first class all the way,” said Peter Voudouris, President of Flanders Condominium Association. While there are about 10 standard features all the penthouses come with like free Wi-Fi, fully equipped kitchenettes and an in room safe, they also have vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors and stainless-steel appliances. Each penthouse sleeps at least six, offers different views like ocean front or south island and private patios for your leisure. But there was one that really spoke to me. And it said, “Private Elevator.” Unit 905 offers its own private elevator, has two floors as well as a private ocean front deck. (Ed. Note: Unit 905 is also for sale(!) See Real Tour on page 72 for more info). Having my own private ocean front deck will make me feel spoiled on my vacation but add my own elevator to that and 30 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE JUNE 2019

now I’m feeling like a celebrity or even pampered royalty. Princess Jennifer has arrived! While the penthouses are an important part of the Flanders, it is the entire package that makes it so special. Whether you are looking to be close to the beach, on the boards, have high end features, stay near the rides and amusements, have off street parking, a refreshing pool or your own private deck to enjoy your morning uninterrupted The Flanders and its penthouses offer it all. This hotel and its staff will make you feel pampered and welcome from the minute you arrive. The Flanders, while being regal and full of memories of years past is not just a historic part of Ocean City, it is so much more. They offer updated rooms and spaces as well as upgraded amenities to keep with the times and provide for all their guests needs. I want my vacations to be fun, refreshing and peaceful so that I can rejuvenate myself and come home better than when I left. Now, I can not only stay in the place I fondly remember from my childhood but my kids can create their own memories here to pass along to their children one day. Start creating your own special memories for your family and generations thereafter at The Flanders Hotel.

D-DAY S

This article is from the June 30, 1944, Ocean City Sentinel-Ledger.

32 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE JUNE 2019

By Fred Miller

EVENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO, June 6, 1944, shortly after midnight, 13,000 paratroopers landed behind enemy lines in Normandy. They were the advance guard of a mighty invasion fleet which landed troops at several places along more than 50 miles of the French coast. Operation Overlord, the code name for the invasion, was by far the biggest land, sea, and air operation in military history. “100 Resort Service Men On Invasion Front” was the headline across the front page of the June 9, 1944, Ocean City Sentinel-Ledger. A smaller headline read, “Ocean City Represented in All Service Branches.” The article reported: “Close to 100 Ocean City men, in every branch of the armed forces, are believed to be directly or indirectly taking part in the invasion of the century.” People were not surprised that so many local men were involved in the invasion because 690 names were listed on the American Legion’s Honor Roll in front of City Hall. “HITLER’S SEA WALL IS BREACHED” was the headline of the June 7, 1944, New York Times. A picture on the front page showed the General Dwight D. Eisenhower talking to the paratroopers the day before they took-off. The caption under the picture read, “The Supreme Commander in an intimate chat with some of his men in England prior to their boarding planes for the first assault on France.” “Former Lifeguard Dies In Invasion; James A. Ryan, 3rd, Killed on D-Day,” was the headline in the June 30, 1944, Ocean City Sentinel-Ledger. The article began, “An Ocean City summer resident and former lifeguard gave his life in Europe on D-Day, June 6, it was reported this week.

Left: At 6pm on June 6, 1944, a crowd surrounded the lifeguards as they lowered the flag beside the Music Pier. The StarSpangled Banner was played as the flag was lowered. Right: The front page of the June 7, 1944, New York Times reported on D-Day.

The Honor Roll on the lawn in front of City Hall listed all the locals in uniform. By June 6, 1944, there were 690 names on the wall.

“He was Private James A. Ryan, 3rd, 19-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. James A. Ryan, Jr., of Philadelphia, who summer here on 34th Street Private Ryan was one of the 13,000 paratroopers who began the invasion of France. At 6pm on June 6, a large crowd surrounded the lifeguards as they lowered the flag beside the Music Pier. The National Anthem played from the amplifiers attached to the flag pole. The invasion was a huge success, but World War II continued for another year. The year ended with the American Legion reporting a total of 18 men had made the supreme sacrifice, and 715 men and women from Ocean City were serving in the Armed Forces of America.

This poster was on the wall of the 10th Street Ocean City Beach Patrol headquarters.

Jill Snyder By Lauren Avellino Turton. Photos provided by Jill Snyder.

It’s a long way from the courtroom to the art studio – and Jill Snyder, once a successful trial attorney, is now suddenly an award-winning mosaic artist, and she couldn’t be more delighted and artistically fulfilled. “During the recent years of political tension, I was a total news junkie. As a trial attorney, I have a really good memory, and realized the facts kept changing,” she said. “I was starting to get stressed, couldn’t watch TV any longer, so I went searching for an outlet.” That new outlet became mosaic art classes, which have transformed her life in a very short period of time, and in many ways she never expected. “It’s a cheaper form of therapy, and you get to create something pretty in the end,” she laughed. After her first mosaic art class just a few years ago, Jill said that she was confident in her new knack for mosaic art. She then invested in her own tools and glass. Within just six weeks, Jill set up a studio in her home, and six months after that, her work was on display in an art gallery in Florida. Reeling in her newfound success, Jill was elated to see her pieces featured in six different galleries along the East Coast, including Nashville North in Linwood, and Ocean City Fine Arts League Gallery, located at Art on Asbury, 711 Asbury Avenue. That’s where the beginner artist won her first juried award for “Beauty In Bloom,” a picturesque portrayal of hydrangeas bursting with spring colors. “That was the first mosaic to be accepted in the history of that particular contest, and it meant a lot to me to win,” she said. “After receiving honorable mention, I immediately thought, ‘Next year, I’m trying harder.” And try harder she certainly did. Since then, Jill has put her heart, soul, and creativity into countless pieces capturing a variety of subjects, ranging from classic architecture to breathtaking ocean life. “My friend is a deep sea diver and sends me the coolest photos. It’s absolutely amazing what you see way down in

34 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE JUNE 2019

the ocean,” she explained. “I recreate his images with my own personal kick.” One of her favorites she said is “Fire Octopus,” a fantasy version of an adored undersea creature adorned with vibrant colors. She also has a preference for images celebrating hearts, because she feels they make people happy and emanate a feeling of love. “Lucy the Elephant is also special to me,” she said, referring to one of her favorite pieces – a unique representation of the popular Margate pachyderm in mosaic. “It’s neat when you hang it in a room where the light changes, the piece changes also, giving you so many different perspectives of Miss Lucy.” You’ll find Jill’s cheerful, colorful, seashore-themed work featured on the cover of this magazine, as well as the 2019 Welcome to Ocean City Guidebook. From the shore to the city, Lucy to Billy Penn, Jill’s diverse work also includes a mosaic interpretation of the Philadelphia skyline, featuring the iconic City Hall statue and clock. Jill became acquainted with the City of Brotherly Love while studying at Villanova and Drexel Universities. While Jill is inspired by a wide array of subjects she encounters each and every day, the artist explains that her technique remains constant. “Mosaics speak to me. I come up with an idea, and think of how I would handle a trial,” she said. “First, I plan what the end result will look like.” Jill begins the process by creating her desired design, selects from a rainbow of colorful glass, cuts the glass into many different shapes, carefully arranges each piece to flow with her artistic inspiration and feeling, and finally, grouts the glass together to form a beautiful piece of artwork. “Just like when I formulated my closing argument, I wrote it in the beginning of the trial, and worked toward a victory,” she said. “I approach my glass art in a similar way.” The attorney-turned-prizewinning artist currently lives and teaches mosaic art in both the Allentown and Margate areas, but will soon become a full-time shore resident, where she hopes her work as an instructor will thrive. Her students at the Jewish Community Center in Margate are ecstatic. “I’ve had the pleasure of being Jill's student. She’s

knowledgeable about the history and techniques of mosaic art,” said Janet Bentz. “Jill brings much enthusiasm, making her classes fun and interesting. She follows along with each student, gently making suggestions, and assisting us to achieve our end goals. Mosaic art is one of the oldest art forms known to man, and Jill brings her expertise to the class with a modern, beautiful, real-life twist, which is evident in her art pieces.” As Janet mentioned, mosaics have a long, storied history, dating back to the third century B.C. in Mesopotamia, and many historians consider it a cornerstone of classical art, or the art of antiquity. By the fourth century B.C., mosaic art could be found as the centerpiece of Hellenistic homes, Macedonian palaces, and Roman villas, from the British Isles to Northern Africa. Mosaic art flourished in the Byzantine Empire from the sixth to the 15 centuries, typically featured in churches and basilicas. And while Jill appreciates the classic nature and history of the mosaic art form, it warms this dogloving artist’s heart to pay tribute to her best friends, pooches Lucy and Ethel, the Great Pyrenees. Lucy, who recently passed, now looks down on Jill from the Rainbow Bridge, but Ethel is by her side while Jill envisions new artwork. And you’ll find quite a few mosaics featuring the canines too. Jill’s innovative, hand-crafted pieces have been recognized by many local and national accredited organizations, including the Society of American Mosaic Artists and the Mosaic Society of Philadelphia (MSoP). “Jill is an accomplished mosaic artist and valued member of MSoP,” said MSoP President Carol Rydel. “We recently invited Jill to join our Board of Trustees. We know that she will be a great contributor to our organization and the art of mosaic.” And while Jill continues to turn heads in the classic art world, continues to perfect her craft creating mosaic art that marvels, one aspect stays true to her heart, “I don’t just do mosaics,” she explains. “I paint… with glass.” You can find images of Jill’s glass art on Instagram glass_action_media or facebook.com/snydermosaics. There you can message her, learn about her upcoming classes, see her newest creations, and find out which galleries are currently displaying Jill’s collections.

The Spotted Whale Fun and style come together at the Spotted Whale Text and photos by Bill Barlow

I

T’S almost as though Jayne Leonetti was waiting to be asked about outdoor furniture during an interview about The Spotted Whale at 943 Asbury Avenue. “You’re sitting on it,” she said. The stylish matching seat and sofa, set around a low coffee table and all but buried in pillows, is made from recycled plastic and can be used inside and out. This set is in white, but the pieces come in a rainbow of options. Jayne, who manages the Ocean City store for owner Anne Pecora, said the style is often chosen for outdoor decks and for rental properties, for its looks and its environmental pedigree, but also for its exceptional durability. On a spring weekday afternoon, Jayne took a break from her customers and the new items coming in for the summer of ’19 to talk about the store and trends for this year. The Spotted Whale features home furnishings, art, tableware and more. Jayne showed off an Ocean City blanket, decorated with the 08226 ZIP Code, an OCBP lifeguard stand and the names of neighborhoods in town. There are also plates and glasses, cutting boards and an extensive collection of wall decorations, most featuring a nautical or beach theme, or else the name of a town along the Jersey Shore. “We have a lot of giftables,” Jayne said. The store has a good relationship with many local Realtors, who know they can find the perfect gift for a closing. There are also plenty of options for hostess gifts or wedding gifts. The owner, Anne, describe the offerings as shore style, keeping the focus on fun and beach themes while maintaining a sense of elegance and style. 44 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE JUNE 2019

Anne worked in design for years before launching B Oliver Design in 2009. In 2012, she opened the first Spotted Whale in a small shop in Barnegat Light, one of the communities on Long Beach Island. Now there are four shops, one on Beach Haven, on the other end of Long Beach island, the most recent in Stone Harbor and the Ocean City location, which opened in the spring of 2014. Last year, she said, octopus designs were all the rage. For 2019, Anne said, look for antique diving helmets to be featured on many items. At a recent visit, Jayne said she and the other managers participate in the buying process, which includes attending design shows around the country. She has a good idea of what is available at the other locations, and what will be the best fit for the Asbury Avenue store. She also has a lot of flexibility, she said. “What’s best about our company is that we’re able to customize a lot of our items. So, if we have a customer that comes in and sees something that says

Ocean City, we can customize it to their hometown,” Jayne said. Jayne pointed out a framed piece that spelled out “Ocean City” in nautical signal flags. She said she was able to order one for a customer that instead spelled out the name of a Maryland town. That can even extend to the wall art. For instance, on one wall hangs an image in two pieces showing a stylized red sailboat with white sails on a navy background. A customer could ask for the same image with a different color background or a boat color that better matched their décor. “It’s what we pride ourselves on, our level of customer service,” Jayne said. “Doing whatever we can for the customer, following through.” That a big part of the reason the Ocean City store stays open year-round, to make sure they are there for the customers. Like most Ocean City businesses, most of their sales take place in June, July and August. “But we have a great local community that knows we’re here,” Jayne said. “Our Ocean City store has been amazing,” Anne said in a phone interview. Last year, the store doubled in size, taking over the retail unit next door, the former location of Heart Casa, which relocated to a larger space on the same block. “They moved and expanded and that was natural for us to break through the wall and expand our store,” Jayne said. “Which was wonderful because we were able to bring in a lot more home furnishings, bedding, a lot more wall art, and be able to expand our outdoor furniture.” Jayne described her husband, Vince, and herself as high school sweethearts, later correcting that. They actually met in the eighth grade. The couple celebrated 25 years on April 30. They have two children. Their son, Luke, is set to graduate from Ocean City High School this year, with plans to start at Drexel University in September, while their daughter, Livia, will enter the eighth grade in Ocean City after the summer. Both kids started attending Ocean City schools as part of the school choice program before the family moved to Ocean City full time. “We fell in love and decided we needed to live here,” Jayne said. “My only regret is not doing it sooner. I wish I had

known how great the school system is and the community is.” The store is close enough to where they live so that Jayne can walk to work most mornings. Jayne also mentioned the Spotted Whale’s design service. The cost is $150. “It allows our design service specialist to go to your home for one hour and talk about goals and ideas for your home and decorating,” she said. That may also include taking measurements. If the customer decides to continue with the service, the specialist will begin to come up with drawings and recommendations, or if the customer does not want to go further, that $150 is still available to use in store credit. Jayne and Anne both heaped praise on the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce, saying the promotions and weekend events presented through the year are an important part of keeping the city active and thriving. “It just brings in so many people to Ocean City. It does help keep the town vibrant,” Anne said. “In Ocean City, we are so lucky to have a Chamber of Commerce that promotes events all year-round, which really drives the business downtown,” Jayne said. "There’s something going on most weekends throughout the year."

IN THE BIZ

THE CHATTERBOX RESTAURANT BY BILL BARLOW

N

EW menu, new focus and a new shade of pink at The Chatterbox. John Duva wants to bring new life to Ocean City’s dining scene, and he wants to do it in one of the beach town’s oldest restaurants. Since buying The Chatterbox in 2018, John has undertaken extensive renovations to the building, which was built in the 1920s and has been an Ocean City landmark ever since. That’s also included a new menu, one that will look familiar but with a fresh approach to quality, he said. “Our menu is certainly egalitarian, in that there are classics on there,” he said. That includes the fried chicken, marinated in buttermilk and made on premises. There’s also a strip steak from Pat LaFrieda meats, burgers and shakes and more. On a lateApril visit, the menu included a limited number of items. John said for the summer

46 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE JUNE 2019

the menu will expand to about 30 items – big enough to offer plenty of choices but small enough to make sure everything on there is fresh. Even the limited menu included some remarkable choices, including a New England lobster roll, grilled salmon and fish and chips. There were also some vegetarian items, like the Impossible Burger and a crispy fried cauliflower appetizer, served with hot and sour sauce and lime cream. John said fresh, quality ingredients are key.

“We try to get the best products that we can to make these items,” he said. “Our goal is to put out the absolute best product and service that we can.” The ice cream is made on-site. He sees the new Chatterbox as part of a renewed commitment to serving high quality food in Ocean City. He has a new chef starting this summer. Ryan McCann has roots in this area, Duva said. He has recently been working in Hawaii but is coming back to the East Coast to run the Chatterbox kitchen. John said he gives the chef a lot of leeway in the operations, although he retains the final say on the menu. At the corner of Ninth Street and Central Avenue, he’d be hard pressed to find a higher profile location. It’s also in one of the town’s most recognizable buildings. By most accounts it was designed by Vivian Smith in the 1920s, around the same time Smith also designed many other Ocean City landmarks, including The Flanders Hotel, The Music Pier and City Hall. Like several Ocean City buildings, the Chatterbox incorporated Spanish and Southwest design elements, including a bold color scheme. While there have been exceptions, including a brief, unfortunate time when the building was a lurid green, it has mostly remained bright pink. As renovations began in 2018, crews stripped decades of color off the building, getting down to the base. As a pale yellow was applied to the exterior, some locals panicked, taking to social media to plead for it to remain pink. “We had to reassure everybody it’s just

primer,” John said. There was no intention of changing from pink, although it’s now a quieter shade than Ocean City has gotten used to, more salmon than Pepto Bismol. According to John’s research, that shade is the original color, based on historic post cards and other sources. The exterior work went beyond a new color. As crews dug in, they uncovered and highlighted architectural details including colorful glass designs, which are now visible on the exterior of the building. John also made a choice to highlight the archways, which are part of the distinct design of The Chatterbox. The restaurant originally opened in 1937 and moved into its current location way back in 1940. Jean Campbell operated The Chatterbox until 1968. Another owner had it briefly before it went to the Repici family in 1970s. The family ran the restaurant for decades, in the process cementing its position as the must-visit restaurant for many visitors and locals. Bob and Maria Boyer had it next, operating the restaurant for a few years before selling it to John and his partners, Regina and Jim Anthony of Raleigh, NC, in 2018. “I was a restaurant guy, I had places in Philadelphia, Marlton, Moorestown,” John said. He said he also had construction experience, putting him in a good position to oversee the extensive renovations undertaken before the restaurant reopened in June of 2018. That included new plumbing, new electrical systems, new doors and windows, along with new seating inside. While visitors did not see a major change to the outside of The Chatterbox – they

even preserved the neon and the familiar vertical sign on Ninth Street, when you step inside, the restaurant looks strikingly different, with a clean, sparse design dominated by black and white walls and floors. A few familiar items have survived the change. John said the historic photos that were a customer favorite have been restored with new mats and frames, and the large, well-known painting presenting an imagined look at The Chatterbox in 1940 remains over the new dark green banquettes. It was painted by the late Ed Wismer, a music reviewer and artist whose pieces were once found all over Ocean City. Looking forward to his second summer in business in Ocean City, John said the first summer went well. “The town is great. Love the clientele,” he said. The restaurant has seating along the back counter, where a soda fountain adds a nostalgic touch to the new design. There is also an extensive outdoor area, an innovation started under a previous owner. Although he goes by John, his formal name is Giampaolo. He was born in the mountains in Italy, between Naples and Rome, and came to America with his parents when he was just a baby. He still has family in Italy. He said he’s had family members immigrating to the United States for generations, and what brought his parents was the same as what brought so many relatives before and since. “It was the American dream, of course. It’s what brought all immigrants to the U.S., seeking the American dream,” he said. “I’ve had family coming to the U.S. since the 1870s.”

ACTIVITY OF THE MONTH

OC MUNICIPAL GOLF COURSE Nick Matousch and his bud Evan, spend some time on the green looking for the ball... and playing a bit of golf!

N

O MATTER where you are on the island, the skylines of Ocean City are fantastic. Looking out from almost anywhere on the shoreline, you can see the perfect blend of beach and the town all rolled into one. Even in the western parts of the city – away from the sights of the beaches and Boardwalk – if you take a long look out from your deck or dock, you will find the magnificent views of the bay and marshes. Unfortunately though, the one thing that I could not see clearly amongst those magnificent sights by Ocean City’s Municipal Golf Course was where I hit my ball. Where the ball went was a big question of the day as Evan Rundgren and I tried our hand at golfing. Evan continually participates in mini golfing tournaments from May to mid-August with an Ocean City-based organization called O-Street Mini Golf, so he has somewhat of a feel for this type of golf. I am a casual minigolfer at best, so this was taking my game to the next level very quickly. “This particular course is not a difficult course,” said John Decker, the manager at the clubhouse next to the Airport Diner. “It is for beginners, and built for relaxation. You can come here and have fun without a lot of stress.” The Municipal Golf Course was pretty relaxing. The first thing I noticed was that I could hear people talking. I came into this seeing golf as a very serious thing, and did not realize that people talked out on the green. When you are putting or driving is one thing, but when you are just walking around, more than a little conversation made golfing a relaxing time. “Too much muscle,” Evan told me as I accidentally putted the ball from one end of the green to the other. Golf is a precision sport, not a game of strength. It is about hitting the ball with just enough momentum to drive it to just the right spot. It is not just hitting the ball as far as you can. Some of my shots would go barely any distance, and sit embarrassingly close to the tee spot, while others would soar into the sky and plop close to the green. 50 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE JUNE 2019

Stand one degree too far when you drive, I found, or even the right gust of wind at the wrong time, and the ball will be sent far and wide. It can go into the marsh, or Bay Avenue running alongside course, or even to the next hole. So as I watched my ball fly to the side of the green and disappear into the grass, I knew that there was an importance to an accurate drive. Posture played a part in it; keeping my head down, my eye on the ball, and swinging with my shoulders and hips in just the right combination all sent the ball perfectly. Without good posture, you cannot hit a game of golf well; no wonder all the pros stand up so straight. It took a few holes to figure out how hard and what way to drive the ball. But once I figured out exactly how to send it, there was nothing more satisfying than seeing the ball jump to the sky and drop down close to the green. On hole five I was able to send the ball straight and true; that sense of exhilaration as it dropped right on the green made me understand why people play this sport. Half of the game of golf, Evan taught me, is playing the short game, or getting on the green from around the edges. A few of the first holes were a giant game of ping pong as we tried getting our shots to land within striking distance of the flags, and tried not striking too hard with the putter. “The green is not like a mini golf hole. It is much different,” said Evan. “Mini golf is all about putting, so it’s just focusing in on one aspect of golf. It’s a lot about reading the green or the hole to see how you can get it either in or close to the hole, but putting on a golf course is a different thing.” Once getting the swing down the game was

fun, but what we noticed about Ocean City’s golf course is that it's a lot of walking. The course stretches almost three city blocks long, and then stretches back towards the bay almost another city block. An average mini golf course is much more condensed, maybe a quarter of a block at most. Wear comfortable shoes when you go, because you will be getting your steps when you go to the municipal course’s green. Also, do not run the Broad Street Run or something extreme the day before, like Evan did. But just be prepared to do a lot of walking from hole to hole, and even more walking as you look around where you think you hit your ball. You can get a golf cart before 2pm, but once the hour passes you are on your own walking. By hole three we were wondering how exactly far this course was. By hole six we had to take a five minute rest. All that walking, however, was not just for one game. What made golfing at the municipal course even more fun was playing more than one ball at once. Keeping two games going at a time, Evan and I made sure that all that walking was not done for just one stinking ball. We golfed nine holes with two balls apiece before losing them in the marshes; the latter half of this course sits next to the reeds, so unless you are an ace at hitting your target, you are bound to lose a ball somewhere out there. Ocean City’s course is 12 holes, so we felt we had covered a fair amount of ground by playing nine. Evan and I actually considered ourselves lucky to have made it as far as we did, and enjoyed it nonetheless. “It was definitely a great way to spend a few hours outside doing something we don’t normally do,” Evan said at the end of the day. 51

Finding Their Fit By Nick Matousch

LEIKI BOARD SHORTS

i

LOCAL DADS INVOLVED IN THE SURF CULTURE DECIDE TO TAKE A CHANCE AND TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT.

O

CEAN CITY is one of the best places to find surf apparel. Stores like 7th Street Surf Shop, Surfer’s Supplies and Heritage Surf & Sport have brands galore representing the lifestyle and sport. On the beach, lifeguards wear Maui Rippers. Wherever you go during your summer in Ocean City, there's little doubt you'll find all and every type of surf gear represented. And now, thanks to a group of local dads, the selection is even bigger. Some board shorts are made for comfort and style, while others are built solely for performance out in the surf line. When they couldn't find their perfect fit, the group of friends created an alternative bathing suit that encompassed all aspects of board shorts they enjoy. With no ruffled waistband and styles that suit their tastes, their product Leiki Board Shorts (pronounced Leaky) has this group’s comfort, preferred style and performance all in one. “You have Tommy Bahama with the elastic waistband shorts for the older gentleman, which tries to cover all sizes. A medium could be a ruffled waistband that goes from 30-32,” said Bill Law, one of the dads behind Leiki Board Shorts. “That doesn’t have the performance. Then you have other brands, which have performance but also crazy styles. There is a gap where that surfer in his mid30s to upper 40s that surfs pretty aggressive wants to have the performance shorts, but isn’t into the hot pink and all that.” Figuring out what they did not like, the dads

behind Leiki Board Shorts studied the industry until they had a board short which fit snuggly and allowed them to surf comfortably. Made of a quick drying, 90% polyester/10% elastane material, the clothing is laser cut and heat bonded. There is no stitching or netting to cause rashes or itching. And best of all, they have fitted waistbands, without the ruffled drawstring waistband the group of dads was so annoyed with. “The waistband is fitted per size, so it is a true fit. They are going to fit just like your pants at home,” said Greg Guyon, another partner in the brand. “It took a lot of research, digging deep and analyzing other brands to see what would work. None of us have an apparel background in textiles or anything, so it takes a lot of time to figure measurements, seams and material.” The result of all of the experimentation is a hybrid that fits them well, allows them to shred, and most of all, fits their lifestyle and tastes. Leiki Board Shorts come in styles not only for the adults on the beach, but for dinner wear, and kids fashion too. Guyon, Law, Jon Olek, Jim McAfee, Matt Vallese, Mike Holzer, and Greg Bacon, the team behind Leiki, are all fathers of surfing obsessed kids, who gladly sport the line. “All of our kids wear surf gear if they are not in [soccer or lacrosse] uniforms,” said Bill. “They see us

surfing, and they see what we are wearing. Wearing it themselves gives them a bit of swagger—you can see how they light up when something new comes out.” Being parents themselves, a big goal the dads behind Leiki have is making the shorts affordable for themselves and other parents buying for their kids. “Kids are growing so quick,” said Bill. “If they don’t have brothers, they aren’t passing them down. You are literally just going through pairs.” The dads hope lower prices can be a selling point, among other things, to get them into stores in the area. In the two years since the company started, they have reached a small circle— including venues such as a kiosk in Stainton’s Gallery of Shops on Asbury Avenue, a shop in Rincon, Puerto Rico and their website’s store. They are slowly integrating themselves in the community, having conversations instead of pitches to local surf shop owners about getting their product on the shelves. The hope is for a slow growth as they keep improving the bathing suit, and at some point in the future for Leiki to become a household name. “We do go in to stores with a business card, but we have ambassadors and sales reps— people who know the store owners and back our product,” said Bill. “It is word of mouth that is trusted, on the smaller scale of the industry. It’s about who you know. I know a guy, and he is getting us to outfit Atlantic City Beach Patrol with Leiki, and that can only propel us.” “We want it to grow slow, so we can make the best board short that way,” said Greg. “It’s a balance act of getting the right styles, not going crazy.” “We know we make a quality board short and we want every year to improve,” said Bill. With all the adaptations they have and will make to their shorts, the guys behind Leiki are all about getting comfortable in the ocean. A part of their profits go to charitable causes such as their own Ocean Roots, which encourages people to get in touch with the experience they have in open water. They conjunct their charitable work with Ocean Positive,

a movement by waterman Bruckner Chase, which educates people on the dangers of the ocean and how to be respectful of the power that the open water has. Leiki Board Shorts has a goal of wanting people to look good in the ocean, but to also take a good look while out there and reflect about the experience that can be had amongst the waves. “We want to sell product sure, but we want to give back,” said Greg. “[The experience] is being fearless because we respect the ocean.” “It’s about understanding how you can have a positive experience out there,” said Bill. “It changes your life in a positive way."

Gillian’s Wonderland Pier

90 Years of Fun By Deb Worchel

56 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE JUNE 2019

W

HAT do Vaudeville, drums, a shooting gallery, and fire have in common? If you are guessing that they have something to do with Gillian’s Wonderland Pier, you are on right on track! The first three in the list were income producers for David Gillian, the founder of Gillian’s Fun Deck. As for what fire has to do with anything, you will just have to keep reading! David Gillian arrived in Ocean City in the summer of 1914 to play the drums at the C. Elwood Carpenter’s Dance Club. By the summer of 1917, he was playing with Robin Robinson’s Orchestra at the Hippodrome. This large pier was a popular destination for families at the time as it boasted amusements, movies, Vaudeville shows, and dancing. David played the drums in the orchestra every summer season, and, like so many summer residents of Ocean City, he returned home to Philadelphia every fall. Back home in the off-season, he played with hotel orchestras and ran a shooting gallery. According to his grandson and current owner of Gillian’s Wonderland Pier, Jay Gillian, “He [David] was always both a musician and a carnival guy.” David Gillian had ten years under his belt, rotating between the Hippodrome in the summer and hotel orchestras in the winter. He probably felt that the good times would just keep on coming, but the infamous Boardwalk fire of 1927 changed everything. Just one of many casualties of the fire, The Hippodrome was not rebuilt. The “carnival guy” in David noticed a lack of amusements on the new Boardwalk when it opened in 1928 and seized upon the opportunity. He put up a Ferris Wheel and a Carousel at Plymouth Place and the Boardwalk. Naming it the Fun Deck, David officially began his amusement empire. David’s grandson, Jay, who owns and operates Gillian’s Wonderland Pier and serves as Mayor of Ocean City, says some of his best memories are linked to the Carousel and the Ferris Wheel. “I have great memories from down at the Fun Deck,” Jay said, tilting his head and gazing out to the Boardwalk, “I can remember being down at the Fun Deck with my uncle and my brothers and taking down the Carousel and the Ferris Wheel for the winter.” His favorite job, however, was the summer he was 15 and worked with one of his brothers and a friend named Gary Foley at the Fun Deck. “I was the ring boy for the carousel,” Gillian smiled, “When I turned 15 I was finally old enough to be the ring boy and put the rings out. That was a fun summer!” Though the Fun Deck stopped operating as an amusement park in 1988 when the waterpark opened, the Carousel operating at Gillian’s Wonderland Pier maintains the tradition of putting rings out for riders to try and grab. Anyone lucky or skilled enough to grab the brass ring wins a free ride. As Jay informed me, the rings are still put out “the oldfashioned way,” and the ride operators still switch to “the old-fashioned look” of white dress shirts and black ties for the evening hours of operation. “Nowadays the kids don’t like it too much,” Jay said, “But it’s important for my father and my grandfather to keep that classy look.” Jay’s father, Roy Gillian, took over the Fun Deck along with Roy’s brother Bob when their father David decided to retire in 1957. In keeping with the family tradition of turning something destructive into an opportunity to make something good, Roy decided in 1965 to set out on his own and open a separate amusement park at 6th and Boardwalk. Stainton’s Playland had operated amusements at that location until it was destroyed in a fire ten years earlier. Gillian’s Wonderland Pier began with ten rides and has grown to become an iconic symbol of Ocean City, with its giant Ferris Wheel lighting up the night time skyline year-round and the red turrets on the castle façade brightening up even the gloomiest mid-winter day.

Visitors this summer might notice that the façade has gotten a facelift in the form of some renovation work and a lot of fresh paint. Jay notes that it is all part of a year-long effort to mark the 90th year of Gillian’s amusement presence in Ocean City, which just happens to coincide with his father Roy’s 90th birthday. “Yes, my father was born the same year the Fun Deck opened,” Jay smiled, “So we have a lot to celebrate this year. I’m nowhere without my father, this business, and this community.” Even a short conversation with Jay reveals just how important family, friends, and community are to him and how much it matters to him to maintain those traditions and values in the atmosphere of the amusement park. Remember Gary Foley, Jay’s childhood friend and co-worker at the Fun Deck? They are co-workers once again, as Gary joined the Wonderland team last summer as the new Chief Operating Officer. Jay elaborated “In today’s industry to stay competitive, we really needed to go from a family business to corporate.” Gary has corporate experience in the industry, having served as the Chairman of the Personnel Committee for the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) and as COO of multiple parks throughout his career. In addition, he has been friends with the family since his youth, working with them both at the Fun Deck and at the Sweet Jug ice cream parlor at 8th and Atlantic. Jay believes this new partnership will help Gillian’s Wonderland Pier remain competitive in the industry while still maintaining its traditions and family friendly atmosphere. “We are gearing towards more of a year-round kind of business,” Jay said. “The shoulder season keeps growing and we want to have special events that happen throughout the year.” The details of some of those are yet to be worked out, but the business has had a variety of different features and events throughout its history, so anything is possible. Jay reminisced that they used to have a skateboard park in the 1970s and that in the late 1970s and early 1980s they created an ice rink for a few winters. The Wonder Bear emerged as the park mascot in the mid-1980s and his birthday is still celebrated each year in June. If you wonder, as I did, if the Wonder Bear’s birthday coincides with anyone in the Gillian family, it does not. “We celebrate Wonder Bear’s birthday in early June really as a way of offering the local community a chance to get together for a celebration at the beginning of the summer before the busy season really starts,” Jay said. One thing Jay lamented as he reflected on moments from the past is the lack of a photographic record. “The one thing my dad wasn’t was a picture taker,” he mused, “so we don’t have a good record as far as that goes.” Of course, in the age of digital photos and sharing on social media, perhaps at some future date the public could be called upon to share their photographic record of time spent with their own families at Gillian’s. Though capturing the past exactly the way we wish to may elude us, and the future is still working itself out, one thing is certain. Whether visiting for the first time or for the 90th time, friends and families will visit Gillian’s Wonderland Pier this summer and make memories together. And in doing so, they will participate in the ongoing celebration of Gillian’s 90th year, because, as Jay said, “This summer is all about a tribute to my father, my grandfather, and my uncle; three really good people for our community and the amusement industry.”

Best thing about being a father?

Frank Shoemaker

Berger Realty

The most fun thing about being a dad is getting to be a kid again. Life and experiences mold you so I sometimes feel as if I’m experiencing childhood all over again. I get to see things through their eyes and it often changes my “adult” perception. We play in the pool, eat cake for breakfast, have raging Nerf wars, and collect shells on the beach. I’m even learning to play lacrosse this year!

Advice you received from your dad (or any dad) that really stuck with you? What has stuck with me most was more of a statement than advice. Just before Piper was born my father-in-law said, “You don’t know what love is until you have kids.” I thought I knew... then they were born.

Pete Madden

What are your kids names and ages? Franchesca is 8, Frankie is 6.

What’s the most rewarding thing about being a dad? Watching my children take something I taught them and do it independently.

How has your life changed since becoming a father? As a lifelong Eagles fan, experiencing the Eagles winning the Superbowl didn’t give me as much joy as watching my kids making a basket or hitting a baseball.

Realtor, Berkshire Hathaway Fox and Roach

What are your kids’ names and ages? Riley is 15 and in 9th grade at OCHS; Avery is 13 and in 7th grade OCIS; Brynn is 10 and in 4th grade at OCIS; Carter is 7 and in 1st grade at OCIS.

Best thing about being a father? Best thing about being a dad is hanging out with each of the kids and seeing the things they do at each stage of life they are in.

Advice you received from your dad (or any dad) that really stuck with you? Best advice to a new father is to enjoy each moment for what it is and be consistent.

Best thing about being a father? I’m surrounded and saturated by love.

Word of advice for a new dad? Your kids just want to hang out with you. Play a game, throw a ball, it’s those everyday moments that are really special.

Eric Reich

Reich Asset Management

What are your kids’ names and ages? CJ is 11, Cooper is 9, Riley is 7.

Best thing about being a father? The best thing about being a father is watching them grow over time and mature into their own personalities. They’re each so different and I try to really encourage each of them follow their own paths.

Advice you received from your dad (or any dad) that really stuck with you? My dad always said “nobody on their death bed ever wished they spent more time at the office!” That has always stuck with me. I never prioritize work over time with my family. I try to be at every game, play, meeting, etc. because I can never get this time back. Don’t get me wrong, I certainly work a lot but I can always find time for extra work.

PETS OF THE MONTH >>>>•<<<<

Once you ha had a won ve derful dog, a life without o ne, life diminis is a he Rudyard K d ipling

Merlin - Energtic Gent!

Bo - Loves Car Rides!

Darcy - Loves People!

Merlin is a two-year-old tiger striped cat who was found abandoned in a local shop. He is very friendly, outgoing and energetic. He is good with cats, kids and, most likely, dogs. Merlin is neutered, vaccinated, micro chipped and he, along, with all animals adopted through the HSOC receive a 10 percent lifetime discount to the veterinary center.

Bo is a two-year-old American Bulldog/ Staffordshire mix. He came from a backyard breeder. Bo plays hard for about 30 minutes then sleeps for a couple hours. He loves to play with stuffed animals. He may be okay with other dogs if they are submissive, no cats. Would love to snuggle on the couch and watch TV. Loves car rides and walks.

Darcy is a 15-month-old female hound mix with high energy. Will require some training since she still has puppy mannerisms. Darcy is playful and loves to be around people. We would recommend a family with older children. Darcy is spayed, up to date with her vaccines and microchipped. Please stop by and see this wonderful dog!
