GIVE BACK Do you love the holidays? Now, I’m not your putting-up-my-tree-the-day-after-Halloween friend, but there are so many things to love about this time of year. The brisk air, the potential for a snow storm (and for leaving footprints along the Boardwalk and beach in the snow), cookies, candles, carols, movies, football, soup, gift giving, gift getting, giving back… There are so many ways in and around Ocean City to make that last one happen. From the Food Cupboard and Mew to You to Oh Sea Thrift and the Clothes Closet, there are always ways to give back to the community. If you love plays and theater, consider donating to the Ocean City Theatre Company. If preserving history is important to you, donate to the Ocean City Historical Museum or Life Saving Station. It’s fun to make it a family experience, by letting each member choose a place to support. Speaking of family experiences… in Ocean City, some of the sweetest events of the year happen in these last two months. And I swear there is magic in the air here. If you’ve been in front of the great stone steps at City Hall when they’re filled with carolers reveling in the spirit of the season, then you know what I mean. There’s a sparkle here… from old Saint Nick standing on City Hall’s roof against cobalt blue sky to horse and carriage rides clip clopping down Asbury and so much more. In this issue, we capture a wee bit of that island magic in these pages. Turn to page 15 for two playlists to help bring the joy of this season into your days with words and music. For another way to spread the cheer, flip to Just Brew It on page 49. Laura Adams Stiansen takes us on a tour of local breweries. Grab a few friends and make an afternoon of it. That’s what the Famished Foodies did when they hit up Asbury Avenue for a multi-stop food and drink tour along the Downtown. Find it on page 12. Finally, find our super sized gift guide on page 52 featuring items available locally for home, body, and mind. This has been a year… so let’s embrace the magic of the season, give in to good times, spread joy and a whole lot of love. Cheers, Stef Godfrey (that's my middle child Finn and me at the North Street tree last year)

HOLIDAY 2021
Monthly Horoscope Aries March 21 - April 19 Take the relationships you’re involved in and particularly your marriage (where the case may be) much more responsibly. If you’re still single, in November you might aim higher than usual and feel attracted to people who have high social status or who exude power, maturity, and responsibility. Don’t isolate yourself from others and steer clear of power plays, manipulations, and aggressive behavior! You need the help of those around and could benefit from it if you keep in mind everyone’s best interest when you act.
Taurus April 20 - May 20 You’re pushed to improve your ties to others and meet new people or, if you’re married and are dealing with issues for a while, to get your marriage back on track. You shouldn’t be stubborn or get fixed on obsolete ideas or directions that aren’t worthy of being followed. Be careful not to trigger situations that can escalate and affect your relationships! It’s clear that time has come to care more about yourself and your priorities.
Gemini May 21 - June 20 Many single Geminians might fall head over heels, but it tends to be more so physical and the predominant trait of these ties is the erotic one. Geminians who are already married get the chance to fall back in love with their better half or, if the relationship has been running rather cold lately, find a way to reconcile and rebuild important bridges for emotional intimacy. Be fair to others and don’t try to impose your point of view through unfair means!
Cancer June 21 - July 22 You might feel the need to manifest or test your ability to attract and seduce, get out of your shell more than usual, and experience the adventure of love, the intensity of flirting or of a temporary fling. Be mindful of how you behave so you don’t give off the impression of hitting on your best friend’s lover. November is very good for expressing creativity, including at work, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t run into some obstacles. Some Cancerians might gather up the courage to begin an independent pursuit (too).
Leo July 23 - August 22 Ties to others – including love ones – tend to be tense throughout November. It’s possible you’ll feel overwhelmed by the household chores and obligations towards your family so you feel the need for more independence and more freedom to move. If you want to improve your professional situation, career, and reputation, be as flexible as possible and steer clear from authoritarian outbursts. Look for a new approach! You can consider even a radical change of your area of work.
Virgo August 23 - September 22 If you’re looking for love, you get the chance to meet people who make your heart skip a beat. Pay attention to the attitude you take, because the transits of this term suggest that you tend to be closed off, introverted, tough to approach. Financially, it’s likely there’ll be a tendency towards spending too much on credit, even though it’s important to pay off your existing debts. Be flexible and open to new ideas and approaches!
Libra September 23 - October 22 Librans who haven’t yet found their better half have pretty slim chances at starting a romantic connection during this term, perhaps because they’re not so interested, preferring (or being forced by circumstances) to sort out their soul before doing anything else. Try the best not to escalate things in some family matters, even if it’s been an issue that has been bothering you for a long time.
Scorpio October 23 - November 21 You tend to be concerned first and foremost with yourself, your desires, needs, and initiatives. Because of that, ties to others could become tense and your better half could make some very unpleasant reproaches. Professionally, keep in check the tendency towards being overly authoritarian or even domineering, because otherwise you risk ruining ties to associates, business partners, suppliers or clients – or, if you’re an employee, your higher-ups. Although your goals are ambitious, you need to keep in mind the desires of others too, at least in the ties you care about and value.
Sagittarius November 22 - December 21 You tend to be more reserved and discreet about your feelings and you don’t feel the need to express yourself. There’s a risk of discouraging someone who is very attracted to you, for instance by making statements that make you look bad. Some Sagittarians get caught up in secret relationships or would rather keep their romantic bond as far away from prying eyes as possible. You work hard and you’re set on making your pursuits efficient in order to improve your income. Make time for some older family issues and for taking care of your health!
Capricorn December 22 - January 19 You might develop a sudden crush on a friend, or vice versa, or trigger jealousy among friends or serious arguments in the circles you’re a part of. If you’re already involved in a relationship, be cautious, so that you don’t make your better half feel like you’re always one foot out the door. It’s time to carefully select your professional entourage, abandon ties to people who prove to be false or users, and let go of projects that take up time and effort without yielding benefits.
Aquarius January 20 - February 18 You tend to act too forcefully and take on a domineering attitude in your love life, whether it’s a longer lasting tie or an official one, or a recent one. Career wise, you have great odds at starting on a new path, getting a promotion, starting a business or entering a new stage of a professional project. You can expect a busy term professionally. You get the chance to achieve a lot, provided you temper down your tendency towards always imposing your point of view, dominating, and dictating.
Pisces February 19 - March 20 If you’re already involved in a relationship or even married, you tend to pay more attention than usual to life in two, particularly after November 5. Money can be one the extremely touchy topics of life in two and can lead to arguments. Professionally, you benefit from a lot of opportunities, but you have odds at seizing them and making the most of them if you’re open to change and new approaches. RECIPES FROM THE ISLAND A Semi-Homemade Dinner Party
The holiday season brings joy through the little things like sitting around the fire wrapped up in a blanket drinking hot chocolate and decorating the house for the holidays. The season also brings joy in big ways like parties - dinner parties, work parties, charitable parties, cookie parties, white elephant parties, we-like-to-party parties, etc.

HOLIDAY 2021
If you’re looking to host a dinner party with special touches and homemade dishes but are wondering how you’ll have time… try this semi-homemade OCNJ-inspired fete. It’s all about pairing house made items with store bought appetizers and take-out entrees, for a fabulous fiesta without a ton of prep work. Parties are awesome… but they are usually a full-day affair for the host. With our halfhomemade theme, you’ll be fresh and ready to party with your guests when evening comes. Below are three recipes from local OC restaurants: a signature cocktail by Agave Mexican Kitchen, a special sauce from Hula Restaurant and Sauce Co., and a dessert by Island Grill. All three are made at least one day in advance, freeing you up for day-of fun (or cleaning, as it were). Pair the horchata drink with store-bought appetizers or take out apps from your favorite restaurant for cocktail hour. Since the horchata is made in advance, it's the perfect cocktail for
our theme. Just pour into a mason jar or any fancy glass of choice when ready to serve… and say cheers! You can easily spike the horchata with rum or kahlua also. For dinner, select an entrée with a protein (Hula recommends fish tacos, salmon or mahi mahi) from your go-to take-out spot, and drizzle the poblano sauce on top before serving. You’ll bring a punch of freshly made flavor to dinner with minimal stress. For dessert, we suggest serving the key lime pie with a local coffee. Ocean City Coffee Co. coffee and Harry and Beans coffee is available online or in person. Both roast their own beans, making a rich cup of joe. To give your dinner party even more detail, get tableware from your favorite shop (In OC, try Spotted Whale and P. Francis, 944 Asbury Avenue), and a bouquet from The Flower Company, 48 Tuckahoe Road, Marmora, or Spinning Wheel, 858 Asbury.

Shore Eats Famished Foodie
A DAY DOWNTOWN The Famished Foodie hits up four Asbury spots for a strolling lunch experience
I
T WAS a dark and stormy October afternoon when Catwoman and I blasted out of Gotham City and into Ocean City, fresh off a grueling doubles tennis match with Joker and the Penguin (we won on the strength of Catwoman’s serve), and we were hungry. Though it was Monday and raining, Asbury Ave was open for biz, and we completed an OC quad-fecta; four eateries in one visit. This trip was an easy walk and included Yianni’s Café, Ocean City Coffee Company, Wards Pastry, and Rauhauser’s Candies. Seriously, you should try this quadfecta. It’s a bit decadent, definitely delicious, and so lovely against an OC Downtown Christmas backdrop. Yianni’s was first. It’s a popular spot on the avenue – for good reason - and there was a small crowd of lunchers. we slid

into a booth by the window and perused the Greek-inspired menu. Owner Yianni Siganos was born on Crete and serves up fresh fare all year long. CW zeroed in on the Greek salad with kalamata olives and feta. I ordered up the hummus and pita. Meanwhile Bob Marley played in the background as I scanned the charcoal skies for the bat signal. “I hope that food gets here soon, said Catwoman, “I’m hungry.” I hope we weren’t too ravenous as our meals arrived. “I can’t stop eating this,” said CW with a giggle. “I love the fresh olives and the feta in the salad. It’s so healthy and it tastes great. I love the crunch of the lettuce – it’s so good.” I like Yianni’s bright flavors and his meals are notably fresh. Our server Melanie was on point and on time and
has us out the door quicker than you can say “Commissioner Gordon.” Coffee next. Of course. We turned left out of Yianni’s, walked past stately City Hall (built in 1914 and currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places), past the Women’s Christian Temperance Union fountain, across 9th Street past Mark Soifer Park and turned left into Ocean City Coffee. That coffee smell hits you as you open the door and we sauntered in anxiously awaiting yummy caffeine. Catwoman ordered up the Dirty Hippie; a vanilla chai with a shot of espresso (wow) and I went latte – hot and caffeinated. Nothing beats coffee, ever, and OC Coffee brews a good cup o’ Joe – they roast the beans at the Boardwalk store, so you know your java is fresh. We copped a seat in one of the oversized couches by the window and watched a few ramblers ramble up the ave. OC Coffee hits the right balance. The latte was just a bit sweet and not too strong. CW sipped on her bev and hugged it like a hand warmer. The caffeine was kicking in as we headed north in search of something-to-go-with-my-coffee sweets. Luckily, Wards Pastry was open and had an array of yumminess waiting to get into my belly. Owner Walt Hohman greeted us as we perused the glass cases. There were all manner of sweets lounging about; donuts, cupcakes, raspberry tarts (they were delicious), eclairs and more. But we went with my Wards usual – cookies. We handpicked a pound of assorted cookies, and I was giddy with excitement as I opened the box and took a huge whiff of that butterysugary goodness. I leaned into a chunky chocolate chip and was soon swept away in a haze of pumpkin-shaped sugar cookies, red velvet cookies and my favorite – the gingerbread man cookie sandwich.
“It’s so fun just walking around town and popping into Wards,” said CW. “I love spontaneously buying cookies and eating them as we stroll. These are so good.” Not content with only cookies for dessert, we crossed the street and dropped into Rauhauser’s, where we grabbed chocolatecovered pretzels, a few caramel turtles, and some vanilla butter cremes. We dashed for the bat cave where we hid our choco-stash till later. Later that same night, as we attempted a large-scale bat operation, my bat glucose dropped rapidly, and I was floundering in hangry-ness. In stepped Catwoman with the Rauhauser’s solution. “Looks like you need an emergency shot of chocolate covered pretzels,” she said. And she was correct! CW tossed a CCP (caramel chocolate pretzel) into my gullet and boom – better! CW nibbled a few too and we both remarked on the freshness of the candy and the deliciousness of the chocolate. Not only did it stave off hangry-ness, it really satisfied.
CW and I sat around the bat table with our stockpile between us, eating chocolates and discussing the meaning of life. Or maybe chasing our kids around trying to get them to do their homework and clean their rooms.

DIRECTIONS Preheat heat oven to 425° F. Roll out the pie crust and transfer it to your pie plate. Trim or crimp edges as necessary. Line the pie crust with parchment paper so it reaches the sides too. Add pie weights to the dish. You can also use beans or rice. The weights/rice will help keep the pie crust from puffing up and will keep the sides upright. Bake until the edges of the crust are just starting to turn golden, about 15 minutes. Remove the pie from the oven and gently remove the parchment paper and weights/rice. While the crust bakes, in a large bowl whisk together the ingredients for the pumpkin filling. Reduce the oven temperature to 350° F. Transfer the filling to the blind-baked crust. Bake for about 40 minutes or until the filling is set. Transfer the pie to a wire rack to cool slightly.
Heat a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the cornstarch and half of the heavy cream and whisk to combine. Add the remaining heavy cream, Nutella, salt and vanilla and continue whisking until mixture comes to a boil. Boil for three minutes, till mixture thickens, while continuing to whisk. Pour the Nutella filling over the pumpkin filling and smooth into an even layer with a rubber spatula. Top with chopped hazelnuts and cool to room temperature before transferring to the refrigerator to chill. When ready to serve, top with whipped cream and additional hazelnuts.
Make Your Own Vanilla Extract
M
AKING your own homemade vanilla extract is so simple with such luscious results, you'll be wondering why you haven't tried this sooner. All you need are a couple ingredients and a few minutes of your day. The ingredients in homemade vanilla are vodka or bourbon (your choice) and vanilla beans. That's it. Easy, right? Though there are only two ingredients in the vanilla, making it requires a few other items. You'll need something to store the vanilla in, and a funnel to help keep things tidy while you pour. We like to make our vanilla in amber glass 16oz bottles... you can find them on Amazon.com. Vanilla beans are also available there or at www. penzeys.com.
INGREDIENTS 16oz vodka or bourbon 10 vanilla beans
DIRECTIONS Carefully slice each bean lengthwise, keeping the bottom in tact. Open the bean a little to expose the tiny seeds and drop carefully into the bottle. Place funnel on top of bottle and carefully pour alcohol in covering the beans. Seal bottle and shake gently. Shake gently once per week until the vanilla is ready. Vanilla is usable after eight weeks, but for a deeper flavor wait up to six months.

BY THE WAY. They’re so many possibilities when it comes to these cute gingerbread houses. Your kids will love making their own gingerbread land.
Love,
Caitlin Peck
RECYCLED GINGERBREAD HOUSE INSTRUCTIONS.
1 2
First make sure all of your cartons are washed well and dried.
3
Start by painting your cartons white as a base coat, this will make it easier for your brown paint and will require minimal layers. Once your white paint is completely dry start painting your cartons brown. Let completely dry before adding additional coats or your paint will peel and streak. You’re going to need two-three coats.
4
Once all of your coats are dry and you can no longer see any logos on your cartons, you are ready to add some details. Using your thin paint brush and white paint start outlining your carton house, add windows, doors, decorative art, icing icicles, hearts, shapes, candy canes, stars, sparkle, and so on. Make each house your own. Let your imagination take off. Sprinkle them with glitter or add a little greenery.
5
Take some recycled cereal boxes and cut out some gingerbread boys and girls to add them to the town. Run, run, run as fast as you can go make yourself a gingerbread land! Place them in your windows, on your shelves, around your house, or as a fun little centerpiece. Just another great way to add a little more cheer to your holidays!
Next, set up your station to start painting. Lay your newspaper down to be sure not to get paint on your beloved tables.

IRST NATIONAL BANK Celebrates Anniversary; Local Institution Has Made Wonderful Progress” was the headline on the front
page of the October 27, 1921 Ocean City Sentinel. The article began, “Saturday was a gala day for the First National Bank, of this city, when a reception was held in honor of the 20th anniversary of that institution.
ABOVE This picture of R. B. Stites, president of the First National Bank, was included in the October 27, 1921 Sentinel article. LEFT
A picture of the bank was included in the article along with a picture of R. B. Stites, bank president. A brief history was included: “The First National Bank of Ocean City was granted its first charter on October 22, 1901, and opened for business on January 2, 1902. It succeeded the Central Trust Company of Camden. “The stockholders met in Knights of Pythias Hall on October 12,1901, and elected the following officers and directors: Lewis M. Cresse, president, Richard B. Stites, vice president; J. Fithian Tatem, solicitor. “The following are the present officials: Officers: R. B. Stites, President; Howard S. Stainton, Vice-President; H. S. Mowrer, Cashier; B. C. Marshall, Assistant Cashier; J. Fithian, Solicitor. “Directors: R. B. Stites, Howard S. Stainton, Herschel Petit, Randolph Marshall, R. W. Edwards, Ralph L. Coff, E. V. Corson, J. Fithian Tatem, Wm. G. Moore, Coleman F. Leaming, Jr., and Wm. G. Abbott.” The bank’s building was built in 1896 for the Central Trust Company of Camden. The grand opening was held on May 13, 1897. It was the first brick building on the island. The First National Bank took over the building in 1901 and held its grand opening on January 2, 1902.
The building is still standing on the Southwest corner of 8th and Asbury Avenue next to Sun Rose bookstore. It looks a little different than it did in 1921. It is currently the home of Island Gypsy Boutique.

MEET THE MAKER/// RAISING SURFERS
Kristin Manchin
By Megan Antosy.
34 OCNJMAGAZINE.COM
HOLIDAY 2021
You wade into the water for the first time with a surfboard. “Remember what I told you?” asks the instructor. You nod and clumsily make your way onto the blue board, feeling like this might have been a very bad idea. And you try again. And again. And then, you get pushed onto the next wave. You pop up, and both of your feet are under you. Carefully, you stand up, flinging your arms out for balance. You’re up! You feel like you’re flying on your wave. You finally know the meaning of “stoke” and you’re going to be chasing this surfer’s high for quite a while. It's this feeling that Kristin Manchin wants all kids to experience. Kristin is the owner of Raising Surfers, a new online clothing and jewelry shop with a mission. They are committed to providing opportunities for kids to learn to swim and surf through sponsorships. Kristin's three boys – a 13 year old and 5-yearold twins – surfed their way through quarantine. “It was a joy during a time when we weren’t able to talk to each other. We saw these little kids watching our kids. We wanted to do something where everybody gets at least one lesson.” Though Raising Surfers is an online retailer, they also sell jewelry in six states plus a providence. “We are in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Florida, South Carolina, Delaware, Hawaii, and British Columbia," said Kristin. Their only retailer in New Jersey happens to be in Ocean City – Wild Phoenix Boutique, 409 East 8th Street. “I’m obsessed with Raising Surfers jewelry partly because of how beautiful it is but also because of the mission behind their company,” said Kim Demarco, owner of Wild Phoenix Boutique. This mission is simple – make kids unafraid of the water and decrease the number of drownings as well as provide eco-friendly apparel to hit the water with. “We have a long list of families that we’re hoping to provide the lessons to,” said Kristin. “We’re open to sponsoring everyone and we really just want kids to swim.” So far, they’ve sponsored over 50 surfing lessons as well as over 10 swim programs which are six weeks long. “We were faced with a real need for swim
lessons. There’s so many kids that don’t know how to swim and fear water. We’re going to focus on that for the fall and winter months. There’s so many drownings that happen. We felt pulled to that.” Anyone interested in being sponsored for lessons just needs to contact Raising Surfers through their website www.raisingsurfers.com or social media. Raising Surfers stemmed from a problem Kristin was having. “We have three boys. They were sitting on the beach and they chafe a lot. We wanted cooler options so we started making our own wetsuits. Sustainability was important to us. We also liked bright colors. Then we added jewelry to that and kind of made it more of a brand. It evolved into a jewelry company with kids swimwear,” said Kristin. “March of 2021 was our official launch date.” Raising Surfer’s vibrant apparel and jewelry names have special meanings. “Anyone who’s been connected to the journey has gotten a piece named after them. We really wanted to collect people along the way,” Kristin said. The clothing has names such as The Cash, a blue poncho with yellow lightning strikes with pink accents; The Aria, which is a blue long sleeve one piece swimsuit with blue, turquoise, and orange triangles; and The Laela, a pink poncho covered with suns and rainbows. “The jewelry is really what’s moving and what’s interesting especially because it’s waterproof and tarnish free,” Kristin said. “We wanted something that would be more positive and empowering.” Jewelry includes The Lisa necklace, a gold or silver 16” herringbone/ snake style chain, peace studs, handmade Rach studs – quartz druzy stone in an eye-popping green shade, and The Grace, a beautiful agate druzy pendant with a 14k gold-plated 26” long chain. The name Raising Surfers holds significant meaning for Kristin. “My dad was a surfer. My boys will have the same love that he had.” This isn’t only a business for Kristin, but a lifestyle. “It’s not just a business; our hearts are in it. People are generally more happy by water anyway. If we lead more people to water, we’ll have happier people.”

OU FACE a difficult decision when you step into Baked by the Ocean. Sugar cookies in the shapes of apples, leaves, and pumpkins, beautifully decorated for the fall and holiday seasons. Cakes that look almost too pretty to eat. Pumpkin cheesecake with a marble swirl. Candy apples, macaroons, and hot chocolate bombs. Liz Ellison-Saunders, owner, is gearing up for the fall and holiday baking seasons. “We offer eight to ten kinds of pies for Thanksgiving,” said Liz. This year that includes pumpkin, caramel apple, cookies and cream, traditional pecan, cranberry cherry pie, and peanut butter pie. They make shaped butters, too as well as sides. “We offer turkey butter centerpieces and flavored butters. There’s a great mac and cheese that we’re really known for as well as mashed potatoes, stuffing, and sides. Some of their flavored butters include a butter with cheddar, bacon, and chives as well as a honey butter with pumpkin spice. “We have the Presidential blend of butter which is orange, sage, and cranberry,” Liz said. After Thanksgiving, they make a hasty transition into the Christmas season. 40 OCNJMAGAZINE.COM

“Christmas is our cookie season. We do Christmas cheesecake. We make royal iced sugar cookies that we can’t keep in stock. We have our famous shortbread that people ship home to their families constantly.” Another one of their holiday specialties is their yule log. “Yule log is a chocolate sponge cake. It’s rolled into a log with a swiss meringue buttercream,” said Liz. Baking for Liz is a mix of two passions – making things taste good and making things look pretty. “I started baking with my grandmother and I have a history in the arts. I enjoy making things taste good. Then I found that I could make them beautiful too,” said Liz. Liz started cake decorating while she was a stay-at-home mom. “I started cake decorating 12 years ago. Then, I took cake decorating jobs at almost every high-volume bakery in South Jersey. Once there was a turn key operation, I seized the opportunity in 2018,” which became known as Baked by the Ocean, Marmora. Three years later, Baked by the Ocean opened its doors on Asbury Avenue... its second location. It sells a little of everything. “The cannolis, strawberry shortcake, shortbread cookies, and the raspberry apricot pinches are the most popular,” said Liz. “We offer celebration cakes for all occasions as well as pastries.”

A quarter of her business is something you don’t usually see at a bakery – dinners. With having four kids, Liz knew that she needed to make dinner time less stressful for herself. In turn, she’s made it easier for others. “I started making meals that I could send home to my family and also sell in the shop. You can come here and get a complete dinner including dessert,” said Liz.
“Her stuff is phenomenal and her dinners are unbelievable. I still say her meatballs are the best meatballs I’ve ever had,” said Nick Bricker, a customer who also holds fundraising events for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at Baked by the Ocean. “She makes Buffalo mac and cheese. It’s awesome. Everything she makes is so good.” Though she opened on Asbury this year, the timing was difficult. “I was eight months pregnant with my fourth child. It was the worst possible timing,” Liz said. It’s worked out. Manager Julianne Young gets her dream of running a bakery. “It’s a great learning experience. I have a lot of responsibility here that the owners have trusted me with. It’s a great learning experience because one day this is something I want for myself and my own business. It’s a great step,” said Julianne.
Her favorite thing to make is custom cakes, which she learned from attending the Culinary Institute of America. Her favorite thing on the menu is cannolis. “I like the chocolate chips on the end,” Julianne said. This season, Baked by the Ocean is finding their ingredients within their community. “This fall in particular we’re trying to use as much local produce as possible,” said Liz. That’s how the Beach Plum lemon tart made its way onto the menu. It’s a lemon tart that’s topped with the jam from Beach Plum Farm, West Cape May. A returning trend to this holiday season is hot chocolate bombs. “We’re going to have them again around Christmas time,” Liz said. “This past year we did double dark chocolate, white mint chocolate, Kahlua cream, and confetti chocolate bombs.” Confetti chocolate bombs are white chocolate balls that have chocolate cocoa mix inside. The confetti sequins are made of sugar. The hot chocolate bomb is then covered in edible glitter.

WILD PHOENIX BOUTIQUE
THIS ON TREND BOUTIQUE IS ALL ABOUT EMPOWERMENT
T
O RISE like a phoenix from the ashes means to emerge from a catastrophe stronger, smarter, and more powerful. For Wild Phoenix Boutique owner, Kim Demarco, the symbolism in this ancient myth inspired her to create her shop. Following a tremendously difficult 2020, she explained, “our family of six wanted to focus on positivity and new beginnings.” At the end of 2019, Kim was diagnosed with breast cancer, and made the decision to leave her beloved job and friends at the 7th Street Surf Shop, where she began working as a teen during the summers. “I left 7th Street to focus on my treatment and my health. More and more time was passing, and I wanted so badly to go back, but just couldn’t at that time. While I was home recovering, I had way too much time on my hands,” she laughed. “I needed something to focus on and got the idea to open a boutique. All my friends at 7th Street were so supportive, and gave me the extra push I needed. Something good came out of something bad.” All of Kim’s four kids followed in mom’s footsteps, and work at 7th Street now too, including her son, Kai, 20. Her three girls, Keely, 19, Shea, 17, and Lola, 15, also helped Kim open her new business this past Memorial Day weekend. They continue to work with her to run it successfully. “I was so excited to do something like this with my

daughters. They’re three fun and crazy girls, hence, the ‘Wild,’ she said. “It’s fun to create a business where moms and daughters can shop side by side.” Kim and her daughters began carefully cultivating their inventory by going to trade shows. “It’s fun to look at items together, get their ideas for what to carry, and agree on different collections. We get to go shopping for cool clothes and accessories for a living,” Kim laughed. “What girl wouldn’t love that? My goal, though, is to be respectful of the other shops and brands already in town.” “It has been a really cool experience to go through the steps of creating a store together, like going to the trade shows together,” said Shea. Kim and her kids look for unique clothing, accessories, bags, candles, and gifts. Kim describes her clothing as “boho chic.” “It’s comfortable, a bit indie, and beachy,” she said. “We like leopard, tie dye, and really bold patterns. Our clothes are nothing too fancy, just easy. We carry items that are on trend, that aren’t just for teens, but for everyone. People just seem to love it.” Lola couldn’t be happier for her mom. “I’m so proud of my mom for making her dream a reality,” Lola said. “She created a store where there really is something for all ages.” Keely agrees and is proud of Kim as well.
“Working on the Wild Phoenix brand brought my sisters and I closer, and I love that we all had a part in creating this.” One of the jewelry makers Kim carries is created by Raising Surfers. Owner and operator, Kristin Manchin, describes their jewelry as “boho to bold.” “Our Surf Jewels collection is waterproof, tarnish-free, and hypoallergenic, and is geared toward an active lifestyle,” Kristin said. Read more about Raising Surfers, a Sea Isle-based company,
and their mission to provide surf and swim lessons for kids of all ages and abilities, on page 34. Wild Phoenix Boutique also carries the California-based brand, Rareform. The company recycles billboard vinyl and transforms it into one-of-a-kind, durable bags and other functional everyday items. Over the past seven years, Rareform has repurposed more than three million pounds of vinyl destined for landfills. “It’s really relevant today in helping the ecology, especially living here on an island,” Kim said. “They sell backpacks, totes, wallets, coolers, and more. They’re all cool, bright, and artful. You’ll never get the same piece twice.” Wild Phoenix Boutique, tucked away in a lovely, quiet location on 409 East 8th Street, is open every day 9am to 5pm, where locals and visitors stroll by all year. It’s open through the Christmas and New Year holiday season, and will reopen come spring 2022. Follow them online at instagram.com/wildphoenixboutique - By Lauren Avellino Turton

LIVING HISTORY Everything has history. Ocean City is no exception. From its famed Boardwalk to old railroad tracks to lifeguard history, Ocean City has a story. This story is told by a lot of means – through a living history museum, old cottages near the Tabernacle, and the Transportation Station on Haven Avenue. Everywhere you look, there’s Ocean City history to discover. Ocean City was founded in 1879 by the Lake Brothers, under a cedar tree that has now been preserved and moved inside the Ocean City Tabernacle, between Fifth and Sixth Street. After Ocean City was founded as a religious settlement, people settled around the Tabernacle. Some original cottages still stand today, including Scotch Hall, which was once owned by Ezra Lake. The settlers began to form neighborhoods – including an African-American neighborhood and an ItalianAmerican neighborhood. A historic tour of Ocean City is fun to do no matter the season. Besides the first neighborhoods, there’s the newly renovated Historical Museum, and the U.S. Life Saving Station 30. 46 OCNJMAGAZINE.COM

A good place to start a historical tour is at the Ocean City Historical Museum, 1735 Simpson Avenue. The newly renovated space has exhibits on everything from the four movie theaters that used to be in Ocean City, to the Boardwalk, the Sindia (see sidebar), and more historical OC artifacts, including the old switchboard from the Flanders, a replica of the Neptune curtain and the original movie gels that hung in the lobby of the Strand Theater, a waitress uniform from the Chatterbox, and a restored lifeboat. Once you're armed with knowledge, head north down what once was referred to as Macaroni Street. The heart of the Italian-American neighborhood is considered to be between 9th to 14th Street on Simpson Avenue. It leads into the African American neighborhood. The African American neighborhood is primarily from 2nd to 10th Street between West and Bay Avenue and is settled around four churches – Macedonia United Methodist Church, Tabernacle Baptist Church St. James AME, and Shiloh Baptist Church. One of the places that people chose to live was called Widow’s Row, which
is still residential housing today. It sits between 6th and 7th Streets on Haven Avenue. Legend says those who lived on Widow’s Row were widowed by different circumstances. Next, head to the beach towards what resembles a yellow cottage – U.S. Life Saving Station 30. Walking up to the Life Saving Station, 801 E. 4th Street, you’ll find that there’s a rudder poking out of the ground. It’s the last part of the Sindia that was visible on the 17th Street beach until the '80s. The Life Saving Station was founded in the late 1800s and it was surfmen from the station who ran out to rescue those on the Sindia when it struck a sandbar. Today, the Life Saving Station is a living history museum; the typewriter, boots, canned goods, and kitchen look like they’re ready to be used. Nothing inside the station is roped off or behind a pane of glass; it’s all interactive. There’s even a 26’ replica lifeboat inside that is able to go out on the water. Walking the Boardwalk also gives you a slice of Ocean City history. The Black-only beach was between 5th and 6th Streets but dissolved in the late 1950s. The Moorlyn Theater was moved up to the new Boardwalk after the old Boardwalk was destroyed in 1927. Shriver’s Salt Water Taffy has been serving up sweet treats and smiles for over 120 years. The Strand Theater at 9th Street, became the home of Manco and Manco. The Surf Theater now houses posters, rock tees, and beach necessities and is better known as Surf Mall. As you reach the end of the Boardwalk’s business district, stop at another historic business for an end-of-tour snack – Cheddar popcorn from Johnson’s Popcorn, 14th Street.
THE SINDIA The Sindia ran aground on December 15, 1901 on 17th Street in Ocean City. It was headed to New York City from Kobe, Japan led by Captain Allan MacKenzie, when the ship became lodged on a sandbar. While surfmen from the Life-Saving Station went to assist those on board, they began unloading cargo. Vases from the Sindia, along with replica vases that were passed off as the real thing, are in the Historical Museum. Part of the original figurehead, is there also. A tea and coffee set from the Sindia can be found at the Life-Saving Station. The Sindia Pavilion with its sign depicting the ship's history is the last reminder at 17th and the Boardwalk of Ocean City's most famous shipwreck. The ship remains buried at sea and out of sight at 17th street. 48 OCNJMAGAZINE.COM

just brew it Nothing says fall and football season possibly more than a nice, cold beer. And now is the perfect time to plan a trip to one of New Jersey’s more than 100 craft breweries (134 to be exact – ranking us 20th in the United States). You can find a new favorite to enjoy with the cool, crisp weather. Our area has some great breweries, so plan a weekend to stop by and sample their selections.
49
LUDLAM ISLAND BREWERY 9 Stoney Court, Unit C, Ocean View Owner and managing partner Billy Topley is a pizza maker by trade, a beer fan, and was an avid homebrewer before opening Ludlam Island Brewery. “When New Jersey changed their laws to allow tasting rooms, I felt it was an awesome opportunity to combine my love of beer with my desire to own my own business,” he says. Open noon to 8pm every day, “even major holidays,” says Topley, the brewery offers IPAs, shandies, stouts, and lagers, with cans to go that also include hard seltzer and sour beers. Its bestseller is Fish Alley, with 7 percent ABV, an American IPA with low bitterness, and a sweet citrus hop profile. “It’s the beer we try hard to always have in stock for our bar and restaurant partners, but in truth, we rotate over 30 beers in our portfolio,” Billy says, including Amontillado, a double stout brewed with dark malts, and Goats Go to Hell, a lager brewed with all German malts and hops. “We are very quaint and friendly,” adds Billy. “We don’t have a TV and find that it fosters so many great exchanges between guests. There’s always someone to share a beer with.” Ludlam Island Brewery beers can be found up and down the coast at more than 200 retail outlets.

GARDEN STATE
BREWING COMPANY
BEER COMPANY
6754 Washington Ave., Unit B, Egg Harbor Township
247 White Horse Pike, Galloway
What’s unique about this company is that it uses a well to tap into the rainwater under the ground to use it for their craft beer because “quality water is essential to quality beer,” says John Cipriani, a managing member. Its tasting room is open noon to 6pm Sunday, 3-8pm, Tuesday through Thursday, 1-9pm, Friday, and noon to 9pm on Saturday, offering a wide range of options on tap. Try First Drop, with 6 percent ABV, a Baltic Porter brewed with German pilsner, dark Munich, chocolate, and caramel and then blended with dark maple syrups and conditioned atop coffee beans, or their award-winning 800-foot Pilsner, with 5.5 percent ABV, a German Pilsner Malt with Hallertau and Tettnanger hops, and West Coast IPA. “The key ingredient in our beer
is the pristine water from the 800-foot Sands aquifer or Atlantic City Sands aquifer,” says John. “Water has such a profound effect on the character of beer that brewers are often forced to treat their water sources in various ways in order to achieve their desired results. We set out to start with the best available water source in order to brew the best possible beer.” Seasonal and limited options available, as well as sours and IPAs. A tented outdoor beer garden is open to visitors on a first-come, first-serve basis with 90-minute time limits. Can’t make it to the brewery, check the beer locator on their website to find your favorites. “There are always 12 different beers on tap with a wide variety of beers that cross many pallets. You will be able to find something for everyone in your family or group, even the non-beer members,” adds John. “And on the way out the door, make sure you fill your water bottle with some of our water directly from the aquifer.”
Following the motto of “A Beer for Everyone,” this brewing company offers 16 different beers on tap ranging from a light cream ale, which is comparable to a standard American lager, a variety of IPAs, to dark beers such as their Leeds Point Wicked Porter. “When you come into Garden State we like to think you will find something you enjoy over the range of beers we make,” says Carisa Stairs, owner and tasting room manager. Try the Old Ordinary Ale, with 4.2 percent ABV, an English Bitter Pale Ale; A Better Time IPA, with 6 percent ABV, a double dry-hopped IPA with hefty amounts of oats and hops, or pick up a four-option flight for $8. Four-pack of 16-ounce cans are available for their bestselling Blue Jersey American Wheat (an American Wheat with blueberry), Traditional Cream Ale, Leeds Point Wicked Porter, Don’t Go Chasing Watermelons, and You Are The Brut Squad IPA, and their beer can usually be found in and around Atlantic County at Vagabond Kitchen & Tap House in Atlantic City, Tailgaters Sports Bar & Grille in Egg Harbor City, White Horse Wine and Spirits, and more. Indoor tasting room hours are 3-9pm Monday through Friday, noon to 9pm Saturday, and noon to 6pm Sunday. There is also outdoor seating available. “My husband, Jason, and I both have degrees in chemistry. We have applied our science backgrounds to produce highly drinkable beer on a consistent basis,” adds Carisa. “Particular attention is paid to the water chemistry. We regularly send our water out to be tested for its mineral content. Based on the findings, each recipe has its own salt/mineral additions that are specially designed for the style of beer being made.”
Travel a little north or south and visit some of these other breweries and distilleries in southern New Jersey:
SLACK TIDE BREWING COMPANY 1072 Route 83, Unit 3, Clermont Founded by brothers Jason and Tadhg Campbell, this brewing company opened in 2015 with a 27-gallon system and a six-barrel cellar and now has a 120 barrel cellar. They have flagship beers and rotating beers available. Try their bestselling Angry Osprey, with 6.8 percent ABV, a hopforward IPA highlighted with pine and citrus notes, or Monkey Face, with 5.3 percent ABV, a dry stout with roasted coffee flavor, during tasting room hours from noon to 8pm every day, Monday through Sunday. Indoor and outdoor seating is available with limited capacity. Slack Tide beer can also be found in more than 200 locations in Southern and Central New Jersey (the brewing company website has a Google Map with available locations). For fans of the beer, there is a Mug Club, with a waitlist for 2022. The club gives you early access to new can releases, a special 20-ounce Slacker Mug Club mug and cup for fills in the tasting room at the regular 16-ounce price, a T-shirt, discount off apparel, and more. “We have a broad selection of beers and a loyal following,” says Jason, “It’s a place where locals and tourists feel equally welcome.”
TUCKAHOE BREWING COMPANY 3092 English Creek Ave., Egg Harbor Township They offer flagship beers, such as New Old School, with 4.2 percent ABV, a traditional West Coast IPA bittered with Columbus and dryhopped with Centennial, Cascade, and Falconers Flight for a balanced blend of pine and lemon/ lime and Steelmantown Porter, with 6.2 percent ABV, a smoked porter with hints of vanilla bean, American Red Oak, and Scottish peat, as well as seasonal and limited-release options. Tasting room and beer garden hours are 3-9pm Monday through Friday and noon to 9pm Saturday and noon to 6pm Sunday.

Stop by the tasting room to sample their beers (a beer flight is four for $8) or to purchase a 32-ounce growler or 64-ounce growler to take home. The brewery offers tours of its seven-barrel brewing system and has outdoor seating for those looking to relax with a drink.
