ELCOME to the first in what we hope is a long line of guidebooks for the warm and welcoming hamlet of Upper Township, NJ. Our company, Gone Native Communications, Inc., has published guidebooks for Ocean City for five years now and one day, not long ago, we thought we’d try and offer Upper (as the locals call it) its own beautiful publication (you know, to match the beautiful scenery for which UT is famous). So we did it. And we hope you like it. The reason we were able to put this book together is because of the support we received from the
community in the form of advertisers. The front of this book hopefully provides you with a brief glimpse of Upper – enough info to get you out there and having a good time. The second half of this book is our advertiser section. Upper is fabulous, we all know this, and major reasons why are the wonderful locals, the wonderful businesses, and the wonderful
visitors who come here to enjoy all we have to offer. There are tons of places in Upper and tons of things to do, from dining to shopping to fishing, kayaking, boating – you name it. And we hope you’ll find a new family tradition, or a new favorite shop (or restaurant or activity or whatever) in the pages of this book. So, please visit the shops, restaurants, service businesses and activities you see on these cool pages. Let them know you found them in this book. That will make them happy and us happy and all that happiness will spread. If you’re a visitor, take this book home and peruse it at your leisure. Share it with a friend perhaps. HERE is no place like home. And if your home is Upper Township, NJ, then consider yourself lucky. We have miles of open space, great schools, beautiful waterways and short drives to anything we can’t find here. Upper, as the locals like to call it, receives accolades just about every year for being one of the best places to live in New Jersey. It’s no surprise then that we take pride in keeping our community clean, safe and ready day after day. If you’re a visitor here we hope you notice and keep coming back. Because we work hard to keep Upper a great place. Not just for us, but for the multitudes of visitors who flock here every summer. here. Whether you live here, or you’re here for a day, the week, or perhaps the rest of your life, we’ve got plenty for you to do. We have sublime beaches and guarding these beaches is the Upper Township Beach Patrol, a thoroughly professional unit. Follow their instructions and remember to always SWIM NEAR A GUARD and listen for their whistle. One thing I find most impressive about Upper is that almost 50 percent of Upper Township is open space. All that open space lends itself to an outdoor lifestyle and it’s one of the reasons residents love it here. We have miles and miles of marshland areas, we’re adjacent to the Jersey Pinelands, we have designated wildlife preserves, and lots of farmland too. All that open space means you can take advantage of the excellent birdwatching, fishing, and tons of other outdoor recreation. Go ahead and camp and hike in Belleplain State Forest. Visit the nearby wildlife areas in-
cluding the Tuckahoe-Corbin City Fish and Wildlife Management Area. The shore town of Strathmere has a quiet charm but still offers easy access to bustling Ocean City to the north and Sea Isle City to the south. Beesley’s point is a great place to slide your waverunner into the water or just sit and relax. Upper Township has tons of parks and playgrounds too, spread out across the Township’s 68 square miles. The rain-or-shine event includes good food, traditional crafts, a bee-keeping demonstration, children’s activities, face painting, horseshoe pitching, live music and an apple pie baking contest. A
lthough I have lived less than two miles from the Tuckahoe River for six years, and despite my fancy for paddling local waterways, it dawned on me, while driving through the reaching limbs of the Tuckahoe river on Tuckahoe road accessorized with a Great Blue Heron, that I had never taken oar to water here for a more intimate look. “What nerve I have neglecting such an artful landscape,” I thought. The idea that I deprived myself of such a treat resonated with me until I reached home. Where upon before leaving the car, I texted my friend Kelley, “Do you have a kayak?” Kelley and I have been friends since college where we rowed together on the crew team. She, my champion adventure mate, was always up for perusing wildlife by way of camping, hiking, surfing or kayaking. She texted back without pause and through a myriad of text banter that took less than 20 minutes, I discovered a friend with a two-seat kayak and we decided to go in less than a week’s time. I would meet her at her house, not even a mile from mine, on a Saturday afternoon after lunch.

Packing did not take long because I required very little. I wanted very little distraction during my amusement ride through a National Wildlife Refuge. It required no ticket, so with hat atop head, and camera dangling from wrist, I left for Kelley’s house knowing no two kayak rides were alike and wondering, “What will it be today, river? The tango? The Waltz? The Rumba? “ Our time in the kayak surpassed our time in the car-ride there. Having only driven on two roads, there was scant time enough to plan. And so there was no plan. With the only kayak we could get our hands on, an ocean kayak, in tow and no plan to speak of, other than the Tuckahoe River, Kelley and I decided to pull over at any given spot that magnetically pulled us forth. The force was strong with the Tuckahoe River that day. It only took seconds to be beckoned by the cedar trees that lined Tuckahoe Road. They seemingly pointed in unison toward a break in the trees, like a door or entryway to the river; we pulled over in a dirt path marking what must be an entry point for many other river enthusiasts. It was a definite point of passage. A creek
meandered its way in such proximity to the road that it appeared to be shaking hands with it. This is where we boarded. In the short distance from car roof to river, the kayak (made for aquatic adventure not for dehydrated, sedentary life) weighed down on us with great excitement and pulled us forward to the water which seemed to come to us in fantastic anticipation. The “boat ramp” was fashioned out of a mixture of muck and grass and was lined with crushed shells which, together with the Laughing Gulls, gave a glimpse of what lie a few miles east of us; the Great Egg Harbor Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, where the river empties. As we repelled from the bank in the obsidian-tinted water, we immediately felt part of the refuge. The grass stubbled banks shifted toward another creek. We were afloat for a dozen strokes and we came to the intersection of two creeks marked by a planted marina of no activity where boats solemnly awaited their turn to dance. The docks were barren save for a faction of gulls. We made a right onto Cedar Swamp Creek, a tributary of the Tuckahoe, and then stroking rhythmically and in limbo
fashion we passed under Tuckahoe Road. Once through the passage, all sound external to the waterway was defeated by the peace. We were in a more remote, yet playful, area characterized by taller, thicker grasses and reeds and it became apparent the wind and current were working as a team. Belaying my white fisherman bucket hat and arming myself with an oar, I prepared for the coming currents and gusts. It wasn’t long before a strong breath of river air came upon us, grabbing my hat and blowing it like a bubble over and across the river - but it was not to land in the tall grass waiting there to catch it. The wind was to betray the grass and granted the water the game winning catch. Or was it? The hat, showing great fortitude, held on to the air as long as it could on the surface and appeared as if it was waiting for a life preserver. While its puppeteer, the current, played defense against us and the gulls hovering in on the hat. At first, our attempts to retrieve the hat were futile, going in circles as if we were descending a drain. We consulted our playbook and our game winning strategy was having the stern
row while the bow retrieved. Barring the new soggy nature of the hat, it was successful. Kayakers-1, The Mighty Tuckahoe- 0. We got our bearings and rowed with slow progress looking for signs of fauna. Tall grass and reeds lined the black water runway while whistling a tune which was to be our score for the day. Turkey buzzards circled above with watchful eyes as mine were fixed on the grassy banks until they caught glimpse of motion seemingly synchronized to the grass-roots score. Cocking my camera, I froze and directed my company’s eyes in the direction of the show. Brown fur just grazed the surface of the water. What followed was the first of many camera misfires: Sleek brown fur sighted. Shoot and miss. No picture. Stream-lined, brown, furry body frolicking in the water like a dolphin riding a wave. No photographic opportunity. Small brown furry head with stubby ears, black eyes, a dog-like nose and whiskers sighted. Gone before my finger hit the camera trigger. “I see you river otter,” I kept saying. But he was camera shy and an elusive fellow. Slippery weasel - literally. We hugged the bank where we saw the otter and had one more sighting of him. We got the feeling he too, like the current and the wind, was toying with us. This was a game of hide and seek and it was not one we would win. No longer undefeated, we decided to stop keeping score and turned off into a break in the tall grass. Though we turned out of sight from the wind, we coasted forward without having to add muscle. The current assisted us in breaking the inertia. Though our friend, the otter, remained hidden from lens, our off-path excursion unveiled dwellings belonging to another wetland occupant. Lodges built of reeds and mud punctuated the trip through the hidden grassland. An entire village of muskrat lodges emerged from the banks of the grasslands. The water yielded to our oars with little
resistance in the hidden maze of this grassland. Contemplating turning around, we decided instead to look for thoroughfare. We came upon a humble, weathered, handcrafted fishing dock. Off in the distance cedar trees made their appearance again; they stood tall, dignified and watchful over the wetlands. We reached a cul-de-sac, turned around, and did the quickstep back to the reeds that never tired of their song. Once we turned out of the area of hidden muskrat dwellings and back onto the creek to
make our way back, we were met with considerable winds that seemed amused by advancing us into the grassy banks. We contested by rowing on opposite sides of the kayak and in crew fashion with power strokes; we charged on by forceful, continuous and rhythmic blows to the water. Once under the bridge, we were surprised to see white water which caused me to put my oar down and stare. It began to whirl us about like a theme park ride. Fighting the potential to capsize as we came around the marina, we again answered to the forces of
nature thrown at us by tapping into our old crew skills and retorted to wind and current by making it back to nature’s dock. The laughing gulls were no longer there which proved to be remiss on their part because our exit was beleaguered by amusement. The moon, having grown tired of pulling on the tide all day, released its grip and the ebb that ensued left us with the absence of a ramp and in its place an aqueous mud solution. We rowed up to the sloping bank and I took one small step toward a patch of grass believing it would be stable enough for me to step and drag the kayak up to dry land. Such an efficient exit was not to be. The muck swallowed my leg and was not kind enough to spit it or my flip-flop back out. My black Reef© flip-flop, circa 1992, was gone, fathoms deep in the muck. A flip-flop that has seen countless oceans, beaches and wetlands would now become vaulted in the banks of the Tuckahoe forever. It would not go without its partner. For when my right leg was freed, the left leg launched forward inland and it was as if the muck opened up and said “ahhh.” Another flip-flop down and now the pair will be fossilized there together as pairs should be. My lower limbs looking fossilized themselves emerged with a mud mask and marched on while my first mate navigated the muck without losing her sole. The kayak adventure varied greatly from all previous trips but similarly emulated a dream. The dream, not having been the same as any before, also did not read the same backward as forward as is implied by the palindrome name. On any given kayak trip on the Tuckahoe river, the laughing gulls could have been herons, the turkey buzzards could have been bald eagles, the otters could have been turtles, the muskrat lodges could have been trees with roosting egrets, low tide could have been high tide, the hat could have been an oar and the flip flops, well the flip flops could have been anyone’s.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF
Upper Township just love living in Upper Township. I could brag and tell you about how our little corner of the world is consistently voted among the top place to live in New Jersey by various magazines, but, in the
interest of modesty, I’ll not do that. Here in “UT” we have great schools, shaded streets, open space, a river, a bay, restaurants and so many great attributes I could go on forever (did I mention the past about the magazines and the voted best place… oh. I did.). There are more “villages” in Marmora than days in the week. Palermo, Marmora, Seaville, Petersburg, Greenfield, Middletown, Tuckahoe, Marshallville, Steelmantown, Strathmere and Beesley’s Point are the towns within the township here in northern Cape May County. If I’ve neglected one I deeply apologize. Another reason I like UT – and the entire East Coast including New Jersey – is its sense of history. We here on the East Coast were the first ones in on the “America” gig (no offense California). And I love having that history as a backdrop to my current place of residence (did you know that New Jersey is sometimes referred to as “the Cockpit of the Revolution” because of its importance during the Revolutionary War?). So how did UT begin… Well the American Indians were here first. It’s commonly held that the Indians of this area were Algonquins of the Lenni-Lenape, or Delaware, tribe. They called themselves the Scheyechbions, or Turkey Tribe. They were hunters and fishermen and while some may have been year-round residents, others may have been more migratory. It’s believed that with the encroachment of European settlers, the original inhabit-

ants simply left in the summer of 1735 or 36. Upper Township was originally called Upper Precinct. Historians believe the earliest settlers may have arrived around 1690 or so, give or take. Among the earliest was a man called John Townsend, a devout Quaker who was banned from the New York Colony and bushwacked his way south until settling in this area. Among his neighbors were the Corsons, Leamings, Ludlams and Godfreys. Early European settlers included Swedes, the Dutch and English Quakers. Quakers, Methodists and Baptists were the religions the settlers brought and many of their original meeting houses and churches still stand in the area. Whaling was one of the original industries and Peck’s Beach (now called Ocean City, but originally part of Upper) and Ludlam’s Beach (now Sea Isle and Strathmere) were the epicenters of that business (the southern portion of Strathmere is still known as Whale Beach). When whales became scarce the locals turned to boat building, lumbering and farming. The Tuckahoe River was a huge influence on life at the time. The river buzzed with activity in the early 19th century with three major industries; shipbuilding and the sea trade; bog iron production and glass making. In the early 1800s many two- and three-masted schooners were built and launched in the Tuckahoe River. The timber was cut from the abundant woodlands and the Aetna Furnace at Head of the River supplied the iron. Aetna Furnace also supplied many of the nails used in the area. With the passing of the glassworks in Marshallville, the Aetna Furnace closed and the heyday of wooden sailing vessels gone, Tuckahoe became a railroad town, becoming an engine repair station for the Pennsylvania Seashore Line. In the 1890s, dozens of trains could be seen puffing and chugging through Tuckahoe packed with tourists heading to the seashore for a day of fun. Much of the land in Upper Township is protected from development, so the scenery is mostly unspoiled. New Jer-
sey Monthly magazine ranked Upper Township as the second best place to live in the state in its 2008 rankings of the “Best Places To Live,” and was number five on the 2010 list. Upper Township is perfect for almost every kind of outdoor activity, except perhaps skiing. In 1898 the State of New Jersey took a giant step toward organizing itself and Upper Township became one of the 103 original townships in the state (yeah, it’s sort of a big deal). Since then the township has remained mostly rural. These days, locals and visitors can find plenty to do along the Tuckahoe River. The tidal river winds for 25 miles through Corbin City and Upper Township before it empties into the Great Egg Harbor Bay. Along the way, paddlers and boaters will find themselves surrounded by scenic marsh landscapes, forest, railway, and even the backyards and personal docks of the locals. The river itself has both culture and history, as it has functioned as an early way of trade and transport. Those who travel by kayak or canoe may even find cranberries floating along the current, leftover from one of the historic local cranberry bogs. The river has a number of convenient drop-in points, including Head of the River Church, and along Route 50 and Old Tuckahoe Road. A favorite starting point for boaters and kayakers alike is found at the Tuckahoe Fish and Wildlife Management Area. Here thousands of preserved acres of forest and marsh offer miles of trail, rifle and archery ranges, swamps, and ponds. The Tuckahoe reaches and wraps around the area, offering a place for trailering boats and pushing-in kayaks and canoes, as well as one of the best local places for spotting wildlife. Hike in Belleplain State Forest and check out nearby wildlife areas including the Tuckahoe-Corbin City Fish and Wildlife Management Area. HIS QUESTION IS TOO EASY REALLY. The biggest thing is my neighbors – absolute best. Yesterday was a huge example when local fire companies organized a benefit for a young girl who is sick and without health insurance. Next would have to be our beaches – both little Beesley’s Point and Strathmere – some of the only “natural” waterfront areas left. Take out what you brought in because no one else is cleaning them. GREW UP IN THE VIBRANT COMMUNITY OF Upper Township right on Exit 25. Before there was a commuter parking lot, there was a huge field with a giant tree to climb, enough space for touch football games in the fall and baseball in the spring. The parkway overpass was known as The Hill. This is where we gathered in the winter to sled and ride our saucers. In the summer, we used a water heater box to slide down the hill. We thought it was a really large mountain. We rode our bikes to the bay, now the Upper Township Beach, near Tuckahoe Inn. Our parents knew where we were and that we were safe. There are more organized sports and events in Upper Township now, and I believe it’s still a safe community to raise your children. We have an excellent school system, dedicated teachers and community leaders and an outstanding Fire Department and Rescue Squad. LIKE THE SENSE OF COMMUNITY. UPPER Township is a close-knit community, where families and friends are quick to come together to support and encourage one another. Whether it be a fundraiser, a benefit, a Meal Train, a prayer chain, or parents fighting for their child’s education and/or teachers’ rights, Upper families take care of each other, lifting one another up when they’re down. I am proud to be a member of this community, proud to be a parent of an Upper Township student, proud to be a teacher at Trinity Nursery School, and honored to have the support and love of those I call neighbors and friends here in Upper Township. Then there’s the fun side of UT. Growing up in Cape May, where the beach is always crowded (and you need beach tags), it’s nice to be able to hit Strathmere, where it’s guarded, clean, and free. The Summer Life Guard Camp for the kids is great – gives us momfolk a few hours to soak up the sun without scanning the ocean every two seconds for our kids and gives the kids a summer learning experience. Across the street you can sit outside at the Deauville Inn, enjoy some good food, drink some beverages, and catch some rays, all while the kids are catching hermit crabs. And don’t forget Friday nights in summer at the Tuckahoe Inn, outback with family, friends, and the Mighty Parrot Band, where every limbo dancer gets “leid” (now that’s real living in Upper Township!). - Shannon Fuller, local mom, teacher, and resident... and fan of GLove and Special Sauce. SAFE & EXCITING SUMMER FUN Gillian’s Funland is the newest and most visible landmark in Sea Isle City after opening on the waterfront in 2009.
