Where History, Culture, Wine and Innovation meet Stellenbosch is arguably the most scenically attractive and historically preserved town in South Africa. History is reflected in this second-oldest town’s neo-Dutch, Georgian and modern-Victorian architecture; a testament to a proud and dignified heritage. The Stellenbosch Gymnasium, the forerunner of today’s world-renowned Stellenbosch University, was established in the early 19th century. As a centre for ‘clean’ industry, this historic town is a sought-after location for business, ranging from entrepreneurs to major international companies, many of which have their head office in the town. There is a peaceful village atmosphere and leisurely lifestyle surrounded by nature, yet Stellenbosch is no more than half an hour’s drive from the bustling Mother City of Cape Town and endless stretches of pristine white beach are within 15 minutes’ drive. The tranquil, friendly town offers a plethora of activities and events for all ages of adventurer, nature-lover, music and art-lover and history buff. Unsurpassed scener y with views over vineyards, mountains and orchards provide excellent photographic opportunities.

In summer, jagged lines of oak trees etched against white walls transform the streets into cool, shady tunnels. Stroll along the streets and secluded lanes and soak up the atmosphere. Mingle with the locals at an open-air coffee shop or bistro, or titillate your taste buds with fine local fare or international cuisine at one of over 100 restaurants and eateries.

The mild weather and unique terroir is ideal for cultivating grapes and a plethora of world class wines that have amassed countless international awards over the years, have been produced in these fertile vineyards. The first Wine Route was established in 1971 and comprised 17 cellars - today the Stellenbosch Wine Routes boasts more than 150 members. Brandy, one of South Africa’s finest products, is distilled in various cellars throughout the winelands.

Hike through vineyards and along mountain trails that have been the source of inspiration to poets and artists for centuries, or relax at one of the many health resorts and spas located in the town, amid rolling vineyards, or set snugly against a beautiful mountain backdrop.

Welcome to Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch boasts a unique blend of history and culture and carries with pride, the title of Arts, Wine and Food capital of South Africa. This second oldest town has more than international award-winning wines to offer; it is a place where the charm of yesteryear meets the ultra-modern. This bustling university town pulsates with the creative energy and modernism of students in a town where many international companies have their head office and only clean industry is practised. Although the wine industry plays a major role in its success, all the communities of the greater Stellenbosch contribute towards making it a world class tourist destination. Visitors are encouraged to engage with the diverse community, participate in the plethora of activities, sample world class wine and enjoy its many culinary delights. I invite you to open your senses to the beauty and splendour of Stellenbosch. Explore the many opportunities that are available and return with friends and family to share with them, the uniqueness that is Stellenbosch. Mayor Gesie van Deventer. Executive Mayor of Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch is synonymous with beautiful natural surroundings, historical buildings, and wine. Its people have the dynamism of youth with thousands of students, but also the wisdom of a long established community of academics, entrepreneurs and wine people. This mix is inspirational and, in many respects, unique. Stellenbosch360 derives its name from its aim to cover these unique features, as well as the many other faces of Stellenbosch. We strive to cover the full circle, uniting our town’s diverse people

and its friends and visitors from all over the globe, in their love of our special place. Stellenbosch’s internationally-renowned university and other educational and research institutions give the town a vibrant and innovative atmosphere that is an important feature of its cultural and social life. We invite you to share our town with us. Enjoy its charm, taste its wine and above all, get to know us, its people. Stellenbosch 360 – where the past, present and future form a perfect circle. Professor Andreas van Wyk Chairman of Stellenbosch 360

Stellenbosch is a town of many facets - hence the name Stellenbosch 360 - a perfect circle that continues to grow and to embrace all that this historic town has to offer. Its many achievements and accolades range from being the Food & Wine Capital of South Africa to the Sports Capital, The Arts Capital and the Conference and Wedding Capital. The little town of yore has long since shrugged off its sleepy image, and today thousands of visitors flock to Stellenbosch, not only for holidays, but for weekend breaks, business events, conferences, weddings and festivals. Choose to surround yourself with history, or propel into the 21st century in one of our fine dining restaurants and ultra-modern, bespoke businesses. Our Route 360 culture tourism activities provide an opportunity to connect with and interact with locals -arrive as a visitor and leave as a friend! Stellenbosch is abuzz with an energy unique to university towns. The diversity of visitors from around the globe and the many performing and visual artists living and working here, add to the vibe. Welcome to this simultaneously pulsating and restful town. Annemarie Ferns CEO Stellenbosch 3600

Base yourself in Stellenbosch and explore the Winelands, Boland, Overberg, Cape Town and Cape Peninsula 1-DAY Itinerary

3-DAY Itinerary

Meet with a local guide at the Stellenbosch 360 office, or purchase an Afrikaans, English, German or French map of ‘Stellenbosch on Foot’ and set off at your own pace. Visit the Village Museum; Toy Museum; Botanical Garden; Stellenbosch Art Gallery; ‘Oom Samie se Winkel’ and Dorp Street that is lined with magnificent oaks and fine examples of Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architecture. Stroll along Church and Andringa streets with their maze of boutiques, and curio and gift shops, interlinked with sidewalk cafĂŠs, bistros and restaurants. Meals are a treat, with a plethora of eateries to choose from. Enjoy a fresh, organic salad and home-bakes, or opt for some traditional Cape fare – accompanied by some fine local wine, of course. Another suggestion for a day’s outing in the fresh winelands air, is a vineyard walk or a leisurely hike through the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve.

DAY 1 – Stellenbosch Town Stellenbosch’s cultural heritage is unsurpassed (See pg 15 - The Arts) and is depicted in local art galleries, antique shops and the Village Museum. The best way to discover the town’s treasures, is to stroll along the shady lanes, camera in hand. The Stellenbosch University campus is strewn throughout the town and boasts fine architecture, rolling lawns and beautiful gardens. (See 1-DAY Itinerary).

DAY 2 – Stellenbosch and the Winelands Explore the winelands and titillate your taste buds with some of the finest awardwinning wines. Daily wine-tasting, cellar tours and sales are available at most cellars. Many have restaurant and picnic facilities as well as accommodation, gift shops, art galleries, amphitheatres, wildlife experiences and carriage rides, to name a few attractions and activities. There are cycle routes, walks and hiking trails and horse-trails aplenty.

The myriad wine farms are an epicurean delight and well worth a day’s outing – or several days! Not only can you titillate your taste buds with award-winning wines, but there is entertainment and attractions galore – for the whole family (see pg 97-99).

Jan Marais Nature Reserve

Help us to protect the plant and animal life by appreciating our natural heritage. The former Wild Flower Reserve was declared the Jan Marais Nature Reserve in 1980 and is the centre of local biodiversity, aiming to increase awareness of natural resources and sustainable living practices. The Stellenbosch Municipality’s vision is to provide an educational and recreational hub in the Reserve, that the public is encouraged to take ownership of. The only natural example of Swartland Alluvium Fynbos and Swartland Renosterveld left within the boundaries of Stellenbosch is found here and the 23 hectares also provides a secure habitat for small and larger mammals, birds and reptiles. The vegetation is managed as two distinct sections. An extensive undisturbed natural area of 20 hectares that boasts more than 150 plant species, and a managed buffer area along the perimeter. A new addition to the reserve is the Sustainable Living Centre, which features an educational exhibition and information area in the Discovery Zone close to the Eco Centre.

Fauna & Flora

Conservation Objectives

The reserve is divided into various zones, all of which are well signposted. These include a fitness zone, arts & culture zone, discovery zone, play zone, and a calm zone.

The facility can also be hired for small group meetings and events. An outdoor classroom is envisioned. Students and professionals make use of the Reserve as a botanical, ornithological, entomological and geological research site.

Craft Beer A beverage that dates back to ancient times has found its own niche within the folds of the oldest Wine Route in South Africa. Craft brewers and micro-breweries have put down roots in the historic town that is surrounded by waves of vineyards as far as the eye can see. Brewing craft beer is a trend that has more than doubled in the past four years. A far more sophisticated and varied process has developed, particularly since the advent of micro-breweries, and brewers are experimenting more and more with different beer flavours. One fact endorsed by all craft beer brewers;

the quality of raw materials determines the quality of the beer. As it is brewed in small batches, no chemicals are added. Some craft brewers offer courses, while others offer tastings and tours.

Featured Top 10 National Winners are: The Restaurant at Waterkloof, Terroir and Jordan Restaurant. In the category Best Country-style Eatery, The Table at De Meye achieved Highly Recommended and Joostenberg Bistro achieved a Highly Recommended for Best Bistro.

A special aura abounds within restaurants housed in Cape Dutch buildings, while those with ultra-modern interiors reflect the diversity that is dining in Stellenbosch.

Stellenbosch lies ensconced in the Jonkershoek Valley and is surrounded by towering mountains and vineyards, making any dining experience memorable. But dining is not limited to indoors – enjoy al fresco dining, or a picnic in town or on a wine farm. Innovation and Learning Innovation and acquiring skills are increasingly recognised as the attributes that separate those who are prepared for increasingly complex life and work environments.

STUDY Each year, students from around the globe flock to the town not only for its reputation as a world-class centre for learning, but also because of the unique village setting and rich, cultural heritage. Stellenbosch University is recognised as one of the four top research universities in the country and takes pride in the fact that it has one of the country’s highest proportions of postgraduate students, of which almost ten percent are international students. Boland College is an award-winning and SABS approved leader in Further Education and Training in the Boland region.

The founding of the first institution for higher education for the Dutch-Afrikaans section of the population; the Theological Seminary of the Dutch Reformed Church;

led to Stellenbosch becoming the home of a complex of educational institutions. The town boasts several top schools that include nine secondary and fourteen primary schools.

Rhenish Girls’ School, 1860; Stellenbosch Gymnasium, 1866, currently known as Paul Roos Gymnasium; Stellenbosch ‘College’, 1880-1887, which later became Victoria College, 1887-1918, and eventually Stellenbosch University, 1918; Bloemhof Girls’ School, 1875; Lückhoff School, 1935, was named after Rev. Paul Daniel Lückhoff, a missionary who did extensive work amongst the slaves in Stellenbosch from 1829. Other senior schools are Cloetesville High, Hoërskool Stellenbosch, Kayamandi High, Stellenzicht Secondary, Stellenbosch Waldorf School, International English School and Stellenbosch Hills.

Innovation and Learning CULINARY SCHOOLS Stellenbosch is South Africa’s culinary capital and regularly features among the Top 10 Restaurants in SA, playing host to over 100 restaurants offering international cuisine to traditional Cape fare.

SPORTS SCHOOLS Sport is an integral part of life in this university town that has delivered top achievers in almost every sporting discipline. Spor ts schools and academies offer training courses (some offer accommodation), tennis, athletics, swimming and gymnastics. There are also courses on sports leadership, training and development. The university caters for over 30 competitive and recreational sports.

The town is home to the Institute of Culinary Arts, South African Chefs Academy and Private Hotel School.

DESIGN SCHOOLS In this renowned centre for education and learning, there are several design schools and academies for the study of graphic design, photography, jewellery, fashion, visual arts, sculpture, art, ceramics, and interior design, to name a few.

STELLENBOSCH INNOVATION DISTRICT The Stellenbosch Innovation District (SID) is an initiative that spun out of research done by the university to create a system of innovation for the town. The main aims are to foster a culture of collaboration and innovation for sustainability between business, researchers, social interest groups and municipal leadership. This will be done firstly through building upon resources and initiatives already existing in the town. These internal resources will need to be mobilised in such a way that the town also becomes an attractive and viable investment destination for external human and financial resources.

Gourmet Capital

Wines of Stellenbosch Stellenbosch enjoys prominence as one of South Africa’s best known towns, both locally and internationally. History, culture, architecture, natural scenic beauty, sport, education and wine have made the name “Stellenbosch” resonate around the globe as one of South Africa’s premier tourism, wine, business and education destinations. This Route comprises five sub-routes, each with their own characteristics in terms of prominent wine styles, climatic conditions and geographical location. As part of the Cape Winelands, the Stellenbosch Wine Routes is part of the six most popular tourist attractions in South Africa and is also connected to the global Great Wine Capitals Network.

The history of the town dates back to 1679 when a small island on the Eerste River was named “Stellenbosch” by Simon van der Stel, governor of the Cape at the time. It is, however, assumed that prior to its official naming, Stellenbosch and surrounds was home to various indigenous communities. In 1971 Stellenbosch became the first wine region in South Africa to establish a wine route, as an organised network of wineries, along which the tourist could experience the region’s famous wines and discover the magic of the winelands. The Stellenbosch Wine Routes offers a coordinated network of more than 150 wineries, each offering a unique cellar door experience for the wine-lover and tourist.

NEIL ELLIS WINES

THE PHILOSOPHY: The source of distinctive wines is quality grapes, therefore the vintner’s work begins in the vineyards. Vines vary greatly in their soil, climatic and topographical requirements and no single vineyard can satisfy the needs of all grape varieties. With this in mind, we select vineyards where individual varieties excel. Emphasis placed on caring viticultural practices by dedicated growers, together with careful winemaking, contributes to this pursuit of excellence in the art of winemaking. “A pursuit of quality, nothing less.” Neil Ellis

WARWICK ESTATE

At Warwick we have a pretty simple philosophy when it comes to making our wine. We don’t see the trick in producing amazing wine as being one single activity. Instead, it’s a series of events. It’s a combination of your surroundings, the materials you have and what you do with them. Good wine is about good grapes as well as good people. Every little aspect that goes into that beautiful glass of wine, as the end of the journey, needs to be perfect. Nothing less.
