A Town for all Seasons Stellenbosch is the second-oldest and arguably the most scenically attractive and historically preserved town in South Africa. History is reflected in the neo-Dutch, Georgian and modern-Victorian architecture that bear witness to a proud and dignified heritage. The town’s academic history has its roots in the early nineteenth century when the Stellenbosch Gymnasium, the forerunner of today’s renowned Stellenbosch University, was established. Stellenbosch is a centre for ‘clean’ industry and is a sought-after location for business, ranging from entrepreneurs to major international companies, many of which have their head office in the town. There is a village atmosphere and leisurely lifestyle surrounded by nature, yet Stellenbosch is no more than half an hour’s drive from cosmopolitan Cape Town. Endless stretches of pristine white beach are within 15 minutes’ drive.
The mild weather and unique terroir is ideal for cultivating grapes and the region has produced world-class wines that have amassed countless international awards over the years. The first Wine Route, established in 1971, comprised 17 cellars - today the Stellenbosch American Express® Wine Routes boasts more than 152 members. Brandy, one of South Africa’s finest products, is distilled in various cellars throughout the winelands. The tranquil, friendly town offers a plethora of activities and events for young
and old, the adventurer, nature-lover, music and art-lover, and history buff. Unsurpassed scenery with views over vineyards, mountains and orchards provide excellent photographic opportunities.
In summer, jagged lines of oak trees etched against white walls transform the streets into cool, shady tunnels. Stroll along the streets and secluded lanes and soak up the atmosphere. Mingle with the locals at an open-air coffee shop or bistro, or titillate your taste buds with fine local fare or international cuisine at one of over 80 restaurants and eateries. Hike through vineyards and along mountain trails that have been the source of inspiration to poets and artists for centuries, or relax at one of the many health resorts and spas located in the town, amid rolling vineyards, or set snugly against a beautiful mountain backdrop.

Village Shopping Both a university town and prime tourist destination, Stellenbosch is a shopper’s paradise, where you can enjoy a daily ‘shopping holiday’. Stroll along the oak-lined streets and lanes of the town, with its mountain backdrop, and browse through shops ranging from small local produce stores to large, modern malls. Stellenbosch has seven main shopping centres, namely Die Boord Shopping Centre, Eikestad Mall, Simonswyk Centre, Stellenbosch Square, Stelmark Square and Stone Village.
There are fashion boutiques, gift shops, bric-a-brac, clockmakers, wine merchants, art galleries, antique stores, diamond dealers, and speciality shops, where one can browse for that special something.
A
Take the time to stop off for a glass of chilled local wine or aromatic cup of coffee and mingle with the local folk at a sunny sidewalk café, bistro or pub.
Historic Dorp Street is a national monument and boasts shops, boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops and bistros, and general stores; the most renowned being Oom Samie se Winkel that dates back to 1904 and is a Stellenbosch institution. Don’t miss the local slow food market, fresh produce market or farm stalls dotted along the R44 between Stellenbosch and Somerset West.

South Africa’s oldest music school, the Stellenbosch Conservatoire, has its home in this important cultural centre, and there is a collection of galleries and museums housing national and international art collections worth viewing.
The Stellenbosch Outdoor Sculpture Trust (SOST) is a non-profit organisation that was formed in 2011. Through sponsorships and donations SOST is able to bring art which would normally only be enjoyed in exclusive galleries or sculpture parks to the streets of Stellenbosch for all to enjoy. These annual outdoor exhibitions
are now in their sixth year. Placing art in the open has the power to energize our public spaces and transform the spaces where we live, work, and play into more welcoming and thought-provoking environments. Exposure to the arts helps expand our thinking and encourages dialogue and creativity. www.sost.co.za

Strolling through Stellenbosch, particularly along historic Dorp Street, is a ‘natural art experience’. There are sculptures strategically placed around the historic town centre – also known as the ‘Arts Quarter’- and a plethora of art galleries. The town boasts a rich, multi-coloured canvas of unique art destinations and attractions buzzing with artistic activity. Several galleries exhibit art for sale and some wine estates also host impressive art collections and outdoor sculptures. Here is our suggested meander along The Art Route.

Wining & Dining Almost every conceivable cuisine in every conceivable location – that’s the Wine and Food Capital of South Africa dining experience. There are more than 80 restaurants offering the most basic dishes to over-thetop and 5-star dining experiences, set both in the town and on many of the wine farms.
Stellenbosch restaurants were once again awarded Top 10 status in the Eat Out DStv Food Network Restaurant Awards 2015. Featured national winners are, Jordan Restaurant at Jordan Wines, Overture at Hidden Valley Wines, Rust en Vrede at Rust en Vrede Wine Estate and Terroir at Kleine Zalze Wine Farm.
Some lie snuggled amid vineyards and atop a hill, while others are perched 300m above sea-level with panoramic views over False Bay and Table Mountain. A special aura abounds within restaurants housed in Cape Dutch buildings, while those with ultra-modern interiors reflect the diversity that is dining in Stellenbosch. The Boschendal Style Award went to Equus Dine at Cavalli Wine and Stud Farm. Stellenbosch lies ensconced in the Jonkershoek Valley and is surrounded by towering mountains and vineyards, making any dining experience memorable. But dining is not limited to indoors – enjoy al fresco dining, or a picnic in town or on a wine farm. In this historic haven, business hub and student town, restaurants have to cater for the casual diner to the most discerning epicurean – and they do it well. Fine dining restaurants, laid-back bistros, coffee shops, sidewalk cafés and fast food outlets abound and offer traditional Cape cuisine and South African specialities, to the most exotic international cuisine.

Help us to protect the plant and animal life by appreciating our natural heritage. The former Wild Flower Reserve was declared the Jan Marais Nature Reserve in 1980 and is the centre of local biodiversity, aiming to increase awareness of natural resources and sustainable living practices. The Stellenbosch Municipality’s vision is to provide an educational and recreational hub in the Reserve, that the public is encouraged to take ownership of. The only natural example of Swartland Alluvium Fynbos and Swartland Renosterveld left within the boundaries of Stellenbosch is found here and the 23 hectares also provides a secure habitat for small and larger mammal species, birdlife and reptiles. The vegetation is managed as two distinct sections; an extensive undisturbed natural area of 20 hectares surrounded by a managed buffer area along the perimeter. This natural area boasts more than 150 plant species.
Fauna & Flora:
Conservation Objectives:
A number of small animals find shelter in the reserve. Striped mouse, Cape Grysbok and the Cape Grey Mongoose are found here. Angulate and Leopard tortoise are common residents, and reptiles such as the Cape Cobra and Cape Puffadder have been sighted.
Jan Marais Eco Centre was launched on Earth Day (22 April 2013) to provide environmental education specifically aimed at the youth in the Greater Stellenbosch area. The Centre houses the Struik Nature Library, and presents Interactive programs according to the National Environmental Calendar.
Malachite sunbird, Cape sugarbird, Orangebreasted sunbird, Black eagle, Helmeted guinea fowl and Cape francolin are among the rich birdlife. An impressive collection of Proteaceae (proteas, pincushions, conebush) make for a wonderful display and numerous flower beds have been added, showcasing mass planting of Spurflowers (Plectranthus) and other shadeloving plants.
Recreation and Tourism: Due to its central location, the Reserve serves as an important local recreational destination that is frequently used for trail running, walking, cycling, dog walking, picnicking and general relaxation. The reserve is divided into various zones including fitness zone, arts & culture zone, discovery zone, play zone, a calm zone, and is well signposted.
The facility can also be hired for small group meetings and events. An outdoor classroom is envisioned. Students and professionals make use of the Reserve as a botanical, ornithological, entomological and geological research site.
Features: Various artworks exhibited throughout the Reserve; a Labyrinth; Shell-like sculptures; a historical Kiosk at the entrance; Outdoor gym; Outdoor chess set; and various Picnic areas. The gravel road through the middle of the Reserve is the remains of the old road from the town to Jonkershoek. Dogs on a leash are welcome.
Weddings, kiddies’ parties and environmental events are regularly hosted here. Plans for a tea garden and indigenous nursery are underway.

Gourmet Capital
Wines of Stellenbosch Stellenbosch enjoys prominence as one of South Africa’s best known towns, both locally and internationally. History, culture, architecture, natural scenic beauty, sport, education and wine have made the name “Stellenbosch” resonate around the globe as one of South Africa’s premier tourist tourism, wine, business and education destinations. each with their own characteristics in terms of prominent wine styles, climatic conditions and geographical location. As part of the Cape Winelands, the Stellenbosch Wine Routes is part of the six most popular tourist attractions in South Africa. It is also connected to the global Great Wine Capitals Network.
The history of the town dates back to 1679 when a small island on the Eerste River was named “Stellenbosch” by Simon van der Stel, governor of the Cape at the time. It is, however, assumed that prior to its official naming, Stellenbosch and surrounds was home to various indigenous communities. In 1971 Stellenbosch became the first wine region in South Africa to establish a wine route, as an organised network of wineries, along which the tourist could experience the region’s famous wines and discover the magic of the winelands. The Stellenbosch Wine Routes offers a coordinated network of more than 152 wineries, each offering a unique cellar door experience for the wine-lover and tourist. This Route comprises five sub-routes,

NEIL ELLIS WINES
THE PHILOSOPHY: The source of distinctive wines is quality grapes, therefore the vintner’s work begins in the vineyards. Vines vary greatly in their soil, climatic and topographical requirements and no single vineyard can satisfy the needs of all grape varieties. With this in mind, we select vineyards where individual varieties excel. Emphasis placed on caring viticultural practices by dedicated growers, together with careful winemaking, contributes to this pursuit of excellence in the art of winemaking. “A pursuit of quality, nothing less.” Neil Ellis

WARWICK ESTATE
At Warwick we have a pretty simple philosophy when it comes to making our wine. We don’t see the trick in producing amazing wine as being one single activity. Instead, it’s a series of events. It’s a combination of your surroundings, the materials you have and what you do with them. Good wine is about good grapes as well as good people. Every little aspect that goes into that beautiful glass of wine, as the end of the journey, needs to be perfect. Nothing less.
