Stellenbosch A MELTING POT OF HISTORY, CULTURE, WINE, EDUCATION & INNOVATION

Along the banks of the Eerste River, lies the historic town of Stellenbosch, home to the renowned Stellenbosch University. This second-oldest town in South Africa proudly wears an elegant cloak of stately Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architecture, oak-lined streets, mountain backdrops and rolling vineyards as far as the eye can see. Known by locals as the Town of Oaks, Stellenbosch derives its name from the Dutch governor Simon van der Stel, who recognised that the mountainous terroir was ideal for growing grapes. There is a peaceful village atmosphere and leisurely lifestyle surrounded by nature, yet Stellenbosch is but half an hour’s drive from the bustling Mother City of Cape Town and endless stretches of pristine white beach are within 15 minutes’ drive.

The tranquil, friendly town offers a plethora of activities and events for all ages of adventurer, nature-lover, music and artlover and history buff. Unsurpassed scenery provides excellent photographic opportunities. Hike through vineyards and along mountain trails that have been the source of inspiration to poets and artists for centuries, or relax at one of the health resorts and spas in the town, amid rolling vineyards, or set snugly against a beautiful mountain backdrop.

Jagged lines of oak trees etched against white walls transform the streets into cool, shady tunnels. Stroll along the streets and secluded lanes and soak up the atmosphere. Mingle with the locals at an open-air coffee shop or bistro, or titillate your taste buds with fine local fare or international cuisine at one of over 100 restaurants and eateries.

The mild weather and unique terroir is ideal for cultivating grapes and producing world class wines that have amassed countless awards over the years. The first Wine Route was established in 1971 and comprised 17 cellars; today the Stellenbosch Wine Routes boasts more than 144 members. Brandy, one of South Africa’s finest products, is distilled in various cellars. Craft beer has, in recent years, found a niche in the Winelands.

As a centre for ‘clean’ industry, this historic town is a sought-after location for business, ranging from entrepreneurs to major international companies, many of which have their head office in the town. Return to Contents

CRAFT BEER

A beverage that dates back to ancient times has found its own niche within the folds of historic Stellenbosch and its world-renowned Winelands. Stellenbosch may be synonymous with award-winning wines, but craft brewers and micro-breweries have put down roots in the historic town that is surrounded by waves of vineyards as far as the eye can see. Brewing craft beer is a trend that has more than doubled in the past five years.

36

A far more sophisticated and varied process has developed, particularly since the advent of micro-breweries, and brewers are experimenting more and more with different flavours. Craft beer is produced in small, or ‘boutique’ batches and is chemical-free. One fact endorsed by all craft beer brewers; the quality of raw materials determines the quality of the beer. As it is brewed in small batches, no chemicals are required or added.

STELLENBRAU is one of the oldest breweries in Stellenbosch and prides itself on using world-class technology to produce its appropriately named Craven Craft Lager, Alumni Ale and Governor’s Red. The

good news is that it has been scientifically proven that the brews are low in kilojoules and carbs, contain no preservatives and are made using pure and natural ingredients. ZEBONKEY is where tradition plays an important role when it comes to beer culture. Zebonkey did not want to follow trends, but rather to rediscover old recipes and craft unique beers. If you’re looking for a beer to really quench your thirst, down a cool and refreshing Weizen. Other beers are Smokey, Poseidon (so named as 15% sea saltwater is used in the brewing process) and Schwarz Weizen. When next you visit the iconic Stellenbosch Winelands, make sure you put aside time to visit the craft breweries or order an ice-cold craft beer at one of many outlets. Some craft brewers offer courses, while others offer tastings and tours that give you an intimate glimpse into the art of making these craft beers.

ZEBONKEY BREWERY

At the family-owned Zebonkey micro brewery you can taste and enjoy up to eight different, unfiltered and special beers on tap whilst sitting underneath a canopy of hops! You will find award winning, classic style beers such as Weißbier as well as creative beers brewed with a twist using seasalt water or buchu-smoked malt. Situated on DelVera farm there are a number of other activities to enjoy and things to discover. Keep your eyes on Delvera’s social media for events hosted at the brewery.

the casual diner and for the most discerning of epicureans – and they do it with flair. Fine dining restaurants, laid-back bistros, coffee shops, sidewalk cafés and fast food outlets abound and offer traditional Cape cuisine and South African specialities, to the most exotic international cuisine.

Bertus Basson’s Overture restaurant at Hidden Valley Wines was awarded Top 10 status in the annual Eat Out Mercedes Benz Restaurant Awards. Restaurant Jardine placed under the Top 20. The mild climate and scenically splendid surroundings make Stellenbosch a prime al fresco dining and picnic destination.

A special aura abounds within restaurants housed in Cape Dutch buildings, while those with ultra-modern interiors reflect the diversity that is dining in Stellenbosch. In this historic haven, business hub and student town, restaurants have to cater for Return to Contents

PICNICS & MARKETS

Stellenbosch is a picnic, market and gourmet capital with many venues to choose from, both in town and in the surrounding Winelands. Picnic at Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, or on a wine farm, in the shadows of a forest amphitheatre or next to a clear babbling brook; the choices are endless. Picnics on a wine farm are particularly unique as there are opportunities to interact with farm animals and wildlife and to explore the vineyards in a horse-drawn carriage, segway or bicycle. Take a picnic basket or make use of the many establishments and wine farms that offer splendid picnic fare and idyllic spots, with wonderful vistas over the town and surrounds. Markets are held on a regular basis throughout the year. Family markets can be found both in town and in the surrounding

countryside and, gaining in popularity, are the slow food markets and those that offer gourmet products.

Stellenbosch at Work

INNOVATION AND LEARNING

Innovation and acquiring skills are increasingly recognised as the attributes that separate those who are prepared for increasingly complex life and work environments, and those who are not. Information and communications technologies (ICT) transformed us and our habits, by the innovative manner in which people can interact in business, in tourism, and in social wellbeing. We benefit from access to information, be it for research, gaining general knowledge, in education and business, or for entertainment. With technology companies shaping our future and innovators creating technologies, we can pursue a better future through the use of internet and cellular phone technologies.

Social Media has transformed our lives, offering levels of interactivity matched previously only by the advent of the telephone and telegraph systems. Technology leads to innovation which leads to a more sustainable planet and the better sharing of knowledge.

STUDY Each year, students from around the globe flock to the town not only for its reputation as a world-class centre for learning, but also because of the unique village setting and rich, cultural heritage.

Stellenbosch University is recognised as one of the four top research universities in the country and takes pride in the fact that it has one of the country’s highest proportions of postgraduate students, of which almost ten percent are international students. Boland College is an award-winning and SABS approved leader in Further Education and Training in the Boland region.

The founding of the first institution for higher education for the Dutch-Afrikaans section of the population; the Theological Seminary of the Dutch Reformed Church; led to Stellenbosch becoming the home of a complex of educational institutions. The town boasts several top schools that include nine secondary and fourteen primary schools. Rhenish Girls’ School, 1860; Stellenbosch Gymnasium, 1866, currently known as Paul Roos Gymnasium; Stellenbosch ‘College’, 1880-1887, which became Victoria College, 1887-1918, and eventually Stellenbosch University, 1918; Lückhoff School, 1935, was named after Rev. Paul Daniel Lückhoff, a missionary who did extensive work amongst the slaves in Stellenbosch from 1829. Bloemhof Girls’ School, 1875; Other senior schools are Cloetesville High, Hoërskool Stellenbosch, Kayamandi High, Stellenzicht Secondary, Stellenbosch Waldorf School, International English School and Stellenbosch Hills. ROOTED IN AFRICA, GLOBAL IN REACH Standing side by side with the town’s sturdy old oak trees for a hundred years, the University of Stellenbosch – Stellenbosch University (SU) today – has grown into a leading research-intensive university on the African continent with the vision to be globally recognised as excellent, inclusive and innovative, and where knowledge is advanced in service of society. Starting out with four faculties: Arts, Science, Education and Agriculture (currently Arts and Social Sciences, Science, Education and AgriSciences), 503 students and 40 lecturing staff on 2 April 1918, SU today is home to ten faculties spread over five campuses, a vibrant and cosmopolitan community of more than 30 000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, which include some 4 000 international students from 100 different countries. The University has about 3 300 full-time staff members and 352 postdoctoral fellows. Against a background of achievement and valuable lessons from our complex history, SU commemorated its Centenary in 2018 with the theme “100 years of learning, growing and moving forward together”. This signifies a new beginning for Stellenbosch University. As a public institution, SU performed its higher education role within the various political, socio-economic, cultural and educational realities and developments of the 20 th century, including the particular form of injustice then prevalent in South Africa. SU has since acknowledged its contribution to the injustices of the past and committed itself to appropriate redress and development initiatives. We strive toward becoming a relevant university that will play a key role in the development of our nation, and our continent. We are committed to contribute to a society of dignity, healing, justice, freedom and equality for all. Our institution’s main focus areas are learning and teaching, research and innovation, and social impact, as well as internationalisation. We acknowledge and embrace our impact on society. Currently, the University is involved in almost 200 social impact projects countrywide. Our normalised weighted research output per capita is the highest in South Africa, and we host 44 Research Chairs. SU is rooted in Africa, but global in reach. It has established multi-layered international networks, with membership of over 15 consortia and more than 150 formal partnerships across the world. Most of these are in 39 countries beyond Africa and 19 countries on our continent. Contact details Tel +27 (0)21 808 9111 | info@sun.ac.za www.sun.ac.za | www.sun.ac.za/100

CREATIVE SPACE for entrepreneurship and innovation The historical architecture and village ambience may remind visitors of a quaint rural town captured in an 18 th century movie set; yet Stellenbosch is home to a thriving start-up culture, fuelled by talent from Stellenbosch University. Innovus is its industry interaction and innovation company responsible for technology transfer, entrepreneurial development and support, and innovation. It manages the commercialisation of the University’s innovation and intellectual property portfolio. Conference and tourist destination The town of Stellenbosch and the University have jointly become a popular tourist and conference destination, offering an impressive variety of conference venues and accommodation. At the University, lecture theatres in academic buildings are ideal for conferences during the summer and winter recess period, and affordable accommodation is offered in residences. As the University and town intertwine, a number of guesthouses and historical boutique hotels are within walking distance of campus conference venues, as well as the town centre. Being the only institution in South Africa offering degree programmes in viticulture and oenology, Stellenbosch University produces its own wines at its Welgevallen Wine Cellar. Other tourist attractions include the historical Jannie Marais farmstead, the Coetzenburg sports complex and gymnasium, the Botanical Garden with its restaurant and shop, the University Art Museum and Gallery, as well as the Music and Drama departments that offer regular music and theatre performances. Our world-class choir is the oldest University choir in South Africa and ranked first in the world by the Interkultur World Choir Championship. The Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden has been accredited by the Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) based in the UK. Innovation and Learning SPORTS SCHOOLS

CULINARY SCHOOLS Stellenbosch is South Africa’s culinary capital and regularly features among the Top 10 Restaurants in SA, playing host to over 100 restaurants offering international cuisine to traditional Cape fare. The town is home to the Institute of Culinary Arts, South African Chefs Academy and Private Hotel School.

Sport is an integral part of life in this university town that has delivered top achievers in almost every sporting discipline over the years. Sports schools and academies offer training courses (some offer accommodation), tennis, athletics, swimming and gymnastics. There are also courses on sports leadership, training and development. The university caters for over 30 competitive and recreational sports.

DESIGN SCHOOLS There are several design schools and academies for the study of graphic design, photography, jewellery, fashion, visual arts, sculpture, art, ceramics, and interior design, to name a few.

STELLENBOSCH INNOVATION DISTRICT The Stellenbosch Innovation District (SID) is an initiative that spun out of research done by the university to create a system of innovation for the town. The main aims are to foster a culture of collaboration and innovation for sustainability between business, researchers, social interest groups and municipal leadership. This will be done firstly through building upon resources and initiatives already existing in the town. These internal resources will need to be mobilised in such a way that the town also becomes an attractive and viable investment destination for external human and financial resources.

THE PHILOSOPHY: The source of distinctive wines is quality grapes, therefore the vintner’s work begins in the vineyards. Vines vary greatly in their soil, climatic and topographical requirements and no single vineyard can satisfy the needs of all grape varieties. With this in mind, we select vineyards where individual varieties excel. Emphasis placed on caring viticultural practices by dedicated growers, together with careful winemaking, contributes to this pursuit of excellence in the art of winemaking. “A pursuit of quality, nothing less.” Neil Ellis

At Warwick we have a pretty simple philosophy when it comes to making our wine. We don’t see the trick in producing amazing wine as being one single activity. Instead, it’s a series of events. It’s a combination of your surroundings, the materials you have and what you do with them. Good wine is about good grapes as well as good people. Every little aspect that goes into that beautiful glass of wine, as the end of the journey, needs to be perfect. Nothing less.
