Stellenbosch

WHERE HISTORY, CULTURE, WINE AND INNOVATION MEET

Along the banks of the Eerste River, at the foot of Stellenbosch Mountain, lies the historic town of Stellenbosch, home to the renowned Stellenbosch University. This second-oldest town in South Africa proudly wears an elegant cloak of stately Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architecture, oak-lined streets, mountain backdrops and rolling vineyards as far as the eye can see. As a centre for ‘clean’ industry, this historic town is a sought-after location for business, ranging from entrepreneurs to major international companies, many of which have their head office in the town. There is a peaceful village atmosphere and leisurely lifestyle surrounded by nature, yet Stellenbosch is but half an hour’s drive from the bustling Mother City of Cape Town and endless stretches of pristine white beach are within 15 minutes’ drive.

The tranquil, friendly town offers a plethora of activities and events for all ages of adventurer, nature-lover, music and artlover and history buff. Unsurpassed scenery provides excellent photographic opportunities. Hike through vineyards and along mountain trails that have been the source of inspiration to poets and artists for centuries, or relax at one of the health resorts and spas in the town, amid rolling vineyards, or set snugly against a beautiful mountain backdrop.

Jagged lines of oak trees etched against white walls transform the streets into cool, shady tunnels. Stroll along the streets and secluded lanes and soak up the atmosphere. Mingle with the locals at an open-air coffee shop or bistro, or titillate your taste buds with fine local fare or international cuisine at one of over 100 restaurants and eateries.

The mild weather and unique terroir is ideal for cultivating grapes and producing world class wines that have amassed countless awards over the years. The first Wine Route was established in 1971 and comprised 17 cellars; today the Stellenbosch Wine Routes boasts more than 150 members. Brandy, one of South Africa’s finest products, is distilled in various cellars. Craft beer has, in recent years, found a niche in the Winelands.

As a centre for ‘clean’ industry, this historic town is a sought-after location for business, ranging from entrepreneurs to major international companies, many of which have their head office in the town. Return to Contents

WE WELCOME YOU

Stellenbosch boasts a unique blend of history and culture and carries with pride, the title of Food, Wine, Art, Sport and Conference capital of South Africa. This second oldest town has more than international award-winning wines to offer; it is a place where the charm of yesteryear meets the ultra-modern. This university town pulsates with the creative energy and modernism of students in a town where international companies have their head office and only clean industry is practised. Although the wine industry plays a major role in its success, all the communities of the greater Stellenbosch contribute towards making it a world class tourist destination. Visitors are encouraged to engage with the diverse community, participate in the plethora of activities, sample world class wine and enjoy its many culinary delights. I invite you to open your senses to the beauty and splendour of Stellenbosch. Explore the many opportunities that are available and return with friends and family to share with them, the uniqueness that is Stellenbosch. Mayor Gesie van Deventer. Executive Mayor of Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch has spectacular natural surroundings, historical buildings, and wine. Its people from diverse backgrounds range from the dynamism and youthful joy of students to the experience and knowledge of a long established community of academics, entrepreneurs and farmers. This creates an exciting and vibrant environment. Visitors from all over the world come here to explore the many aspects of our town. As the organisation charged with promoting Stellenbosch as a destination we chose the name Stellenbosch 360 to emphasise our aim to present the many faces of this

valley to visitors and locals alike. In doing so, we also make a huge contribution to the development and prosperity of all our communities. Enjoy our town: its views, charm, tastes and people. Welkom in Suid-Afrika se lekkerste dorp! Professor Andreas van Wyk. Chairman of Stellenbosch 360

Stellenbosch 360 is the official local tourism authority for our historic town. As the name suggests, 360 incorporates all of the sectors that make it a premier destination: University, Municipality, Communities, Corporates, and Winelands. As a business and leisure destination, Stellenbosch appeals to food, wine, art, sport, nature and adventure-lovers. ‘Forever young’ due to the presence of the university, the café culture, architectural and historic beauty, is complemented by rolling vineyards and breathtaking mountains – the perfect backdrop for pleasure seekers or delegates, to intertwine their business experience with multi-sensorial leisure activities. Locals, regulars and international visitors who have ‘tasted’ Stellenbosch, agree: they love Stellenbosch. Over the next year, the #lovingStellenbosch campaign will inspire, innovate and initiate a multitude of unique captions that make this town legendary. Join us as we engage in various mediums to spread the love of and the passion for making a difference in our historic and culturally diverse town. We are passionate about our town and our inhabitants and welcome you, our visitor, with open arms. Annemarie Ferns CEO Stellenbosch 3600 Return to Contents

VILLAGE SHOPPING

This university town and prime tourist destination is a shopper’s paradise, where you can enjoy a ‘daily shopping holiday’. Stroll along the oak-lined streets and lanes of the town, with its mountain backdrop, and browse through shops ranging from small local produce stores to large, modern malls. Stellenbosch has seven main shopping centres, namely Die Boord Shopping Centre, Eikestad Mall, Simonswyk Centre, Stellenbosch Square, Stelmark Square and Stone Village.

There are fashion boutiques, gift shops, bric-a-brac, clockmakers, wine merchants, art galleries, antique stores, diamond dealers, and speciality shops, where one can browse for that special something. Shopping is a unique experience, as browsing intertwines with galleries and

outdoor sculptures. The outdoor exhibition by well-known South African artists rotates on an annual basis.

Take the time to stop off for a glass of chilled local wine or aromatic cup of coffee and mingle with the local folk at a sunny sidewalk café, bistro or pub. Historic Dorp Street is a national monument and boasts shops, boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops and bistros, and general stores; the most renowned being Oom Samie se Winkel that dates back to 1904 and is a Stellenbosch institution. Don’t miss the local slow food market, fresh produce market or farm stalls dotted along the R44 between Stellenbosch and Somerset West.

The focus for 2018 is on cycling – the sculptures look at innovative ways to park bicycles in town.

CULTURE Stellenbosch is the second-oldest town in South Africa and boasts a rich cultural history that is depicted in the many art galleries and museums. Schreuderhuis is the oldest restored and documented town house in South Africa. The interior furnishing and the garden are typical of a Stellenbosch home and family from 1680 to 1720.

Blettermanhuis was built in 1789 in the typical 18th century Cape style, with six gables and an H-shaped ground plan. Grosvenor House, together with Koopmans de Wet House, is an outstanding example of a two-storey, flat-roofed patrician town house. OM Bergh is a typical mid-nineteenth century home.

GALLERIES & MUSEUMS Historic Dorp Street is a national monument and has one of the longest rows of surviving old buildings of any major town in southern Africa. The V.O.C. Kruithuis on The Braack houses a collection of weaponry, including a canon last fired to acknowledge the flag of the new South African Republic.

The Burgherhuis, with its early example of a Neo-classical gable, is the headquarters of the Historical Homes of South Africa Foundation. La Gratitude’s gable is famous for the plaster relief of the Lord’s ‘all-seeing’ eye. Libertas Parva is a gracious H-shaped Cape Dutch homestead, built in 1783.

Ackermann-huis is where renowned statesman Jan Smuts lodged as a student. The Rhenish Church was built in 1823 as a school for slaves’ children and ‘coloured’ people. The Rupert Museum houses works by renowned South African artists. Stellenbosch University’s historic buildings include the Music Conservatoire, South Africa’s oldest school of music; H.B. Thom Theatre; ‘Ou Hoofgebou’, Stellenbosch University Museum - housed in the Old Bloemhof School, incorporating the Sasol Art Museum; the Stellenbosch

University Art Gallery in the old Lutheran Church, and the Theological School. Die Bergkelder ‘underground cellar in the mountain’ was built in 1968. Stellenryck Wine Museum depicts the history of winemaking and includes a late 18th century German wine press. Van Ryn’s Brandy Distillery was built in 1904 and was constructed using large, rounded rocks from the Eerste River. Oude Meester Brandy Museum gives an in-depth insight into the history of brandy. Wijnland Auto Museum boasts the biggest collection of South African Classic Cars under one roof.

The Toy & Miniature Museum houses a collection of 1:12 scale miniatures, room boxes, miniature houses, antique dolls and other toys, and a lifelike miniature of South Africa’s prestigious Blue Train. Oude Werf is South Africa’s oldest hotel, built on the site of the country’s first church.

Oom Samie se Winkel is the ‘olde worlde’ village store housing antiques, collectables, old-fashioned sweets and local products and produce. There are many festivals and events during the year (see pg 9). Lots of fun can be had grape-stomping and strawberry-picking. (cont. pg29) Return to Contents

CRAFT BEER

A beverage that dates back to ancient times has found its own niche within the folds of historic Stellenbosch and its world-renowned Winelands. Stellenbosch may be synonymous with award-winning wines, but craft brewers and micro-breweries have put down roots in the historic town that is surrounded by waves of vineyards as far as the eye can see. Brewing craft beer is a trend that has more than doubled in the past five years. A far more sophisticated and varied process has developed, particularly since the advent of micro-breweries, and brewers are

experimenting more and more with different flavours. Craft beer is produced in small, or ‘boutique’ batches and is chemical-free. One fact endorsed by all craft beer brewers; the quality of raw materials determines the quality of the beer. As it is brewed in small batches, no chemicals are required or added. STELLENBRAU is one of the oldest breweries in Stellenbosch and prides itself on using world-class technology to produce its appropriately named Craven Craft Lager, Alumni Ale and Governor’s Red. The good news is that it has been scientifically

Fun, Food & Wine proven that the brews are low in kilojoules and carbs, contain no preservatives and are made using pure and natural ingredients. THE STELLIES TAPROOM is a collaboration between Joostenberg Picnics and The Stellenbosch Brewing Co. These craft beers utilise natural ingredients that are true to the heritage of traditional styles, yet are creatively brewed to suit South African taste buds, lifestyle and diverse culture. It is a place where the whole family can relax and children can play. Enjoy a delicious al fresco meal, a chilled glass of organic Joostenberg wine, an ice-cold Stellies craft beer and the laid back farm setting. Beer on site and tastings and tours are offered. ZEBONKEY is where tradition plays an important role when it comes to beer culture. Zebonkey did not want to follow trends, but rather to rediscover old recipes and craft unique beers. If you’re looking for a beer to really quench your thirst, down a cool and refreshing Weizen. Other beers are Smokey, Poseidon (so named as 15% sea saltwater is used in the brewing process) and Schwarz Weizen.

When next you visit the iconic Stellenbosch Winelands, make sure you put aside time to visit the craft breweries or order an ice-cold craft beer at one of many outlets. Some craft brewers offer courses, while others offer tastings and tours that give you an intimate glimpse into the art of making these craft beers.

A special aura abounds within restaurants housed in Cape Dutch buildings, while those with ultra-modern interiors reflect the diversity that is dining in Stellenbosch. Stellenbosch lies ensconced in the Jonkershoek Valley and is surrounded by towering mountains and vineyards, making any dining experience memorable. But dining is not limited to indoors – enjoy al fresco dining, or a picnic in town or on a wine farm.

BUSINESS

Stellenbosch proudly hosts some of the most successful companies in the world. International companies such as Parmalat, Steinhoff, Remgro, Mediclinic and Capitec have made Stellenbosch their headquarters for good reason – it is not only an excellent location in which to work, live and raise a family, it is also well connected and closely situated to Cape Town, two national highways and a top rated international airport. Technopark, Stellenbosch’s own Silicon Valley and Innovation District, houses more than 400 medium and small businesses, specialising in finance, banking, engineering, ICT, design, agriculture and various other services. It also boasts success stories, such as the first African satellite producer

– Sun Space - that provides a home for the university’s innovations. Stellenbosch 360, the local tourism authority, in collaboration with the Cape Town Convention Centre, Cape Town International Conference Centre, Stellenbosch University, Stellenbosch Municipality and SMME service providers, promotes Stellenbosch as a Living Conference, Events and Incentives Destination.

The natural and architectural beauty, country living, relaxed lifestyle, rich cultural diversity, pre- and post tour packages, superb accommodation and venues, as well as the close proximity to CT International airport, make Stellenbosch the ideal business and leisure tourism destination. Stellenbosch 360 annually hosts a Business Tourism Indaba in June for stakeholders in the corporate and hospitality industries.

INNOVATION AND LEARNING

Innovation and acquiring skills are increasingly recognised as the attributes that separate those who are prepared for increasingly complex life and work environments.

STUDY Each year, students from around the globe flock to the town not only for its reputation as a world-class centre for learning, but also because of the unique village setting and rich, cultural heritage. Stellenbosch University is recognised as one of the four top research universities in the country and takes pride in the fact that it has one of the country’s highest proportions of postgraduate students, of which almost ten percent are international students. Boland College is an award-winning and SABS approved leader in Further Education and Training in the Boland region. The founding of the first institution for higher education for the Dutch-Afrikaans section of the population; the Theological Seminary of the Dutch Reformed Church; led to Stellenbosch becoming the home of a complex of educational institutions. The town boasts several top schools that include nine secondary and fourteen primary schools. Rhenish Girls’ School, 1860; Stellenbosch Gymnasium, 1866, currently known as Paul Roos Gymnasium; Stellenbosch ‘College’, 1880-1887, which became Victoria College, 1887-1918, and eventually Stellenbosch University, 1918; Lückhoff School, 1935, was named after Rev. Paul Daniel Lückhoff, a missionary who

did extensive work amongst the slaves in Stellenbosch from 1829. Bloemhof Girls’ School, 1875; Other senior schools are Cloetesville High, Hoërskool Stellenbosch, Kayamandi High, Stellenzicht Secondary, Stellenbosch Waldorf School, International English School and Stellenbosch Hills.

CULINARY SCHOOLS Stellenbosch is South Africa’s culinary capital and regularly features among the Top 10 Restaurants in SA, playing host to over 100 restaurants offering international cuisine to traditional Cape fare. The town is home to the Institute of Culinary Arts, South African Chefs Academy and Private Hotel School.

DESIGN SCHOOLS There are several design schools and academies for the study of graphic design, photography, jewellery, fashion, visual arts, sculpture, art, ceramics, and interior design, to name a few.

SPORTS SCHOOLS Sport is an integral part of life in this university town that has delivered top achievers in almost every sporting discipline over the years. Sports schools and academies offer training courses (some offer accommodation), tennis, athletics, swimming and gymnastics. There are also courses on sports leadership, training and development. The university caters for over 30 competitive and recreational sports.

STELLENBOSCH INNOVATION DISTRICT The Stellenbosch Innovation District (SID) is an initiative that spun out of research done by the university to create a system of innovation for the town. The main aims are to foster a culture of collaboration and innovation for sustainability between business, researchers, social interest groups and municipal leadership. This will be done firstly through building upon resources and initiatives already existing in the town. These internal resources will need to be mobilised in such a way that the town also becomes an attractive and viable investment destination for external human and financial resources. THE PHILOSOPHY: The source of distinctive wines is quality grapes, therefore the vintner’s work begins in the vineyards. Vines vary greatly in their soil, climatic and topographical requirements and no single vineyard can satisfy the needs of all grape varieties. With this in mind, we select vineyards where individual varieties excel. Emphasis placed on caring viticultural practices by dedicated growers, together with careful winemaking, contributes to this pursuit of excellence in the art of winemaking. “A pursuit of quality, nothing less. Neil Ellis

At Warwick we have a pretty simple philosophy when it comes to making our wine. We don’t see the trick in producing amazing wine as being one single activity. Instead, it’s a series of events. It’s a combination of your surroundings, the materials you have and what you do with them. Good wine is about good grapes as well as good people. Every little aspect that goes into that beautiful glass of wine, as the end of the journey, needs to be perfect. Nothing less.
