Plot The story starts with Telemachus searching for news of Odysseus by asking other kings who fought in the war if they have heard anything about him. Eventually, it switches to Odysseus’s adventures. When he finally makes it home, he finds that his home is overtaken by suitors who want to marry his wife. What Was It? The Odyssey, a poem written by Homer in eighth century BC, is the story of the adventures of the greek hero Odysseus. Odysseus starts his journey at the end of the Trojan War, after 10 years of fighting. He stayed adrift at sea, wandering, for 10 more. The poem is in 24 books. It covers the final six weeks of his journey, but also tells the story of the other years. The poem was, and still is, very popular. People like it because it’s an adventure story, romantic and violent, and the characters are exciting and crafty. Many readers enjoy stories with those elements. The other characters make the story even better. Some notable ones are Odysseus, (The main character) Penelope and Telemachus, (His family) and Polyphemus and Calypso. (Two of the many people he meets during his voyage) These are just a few of the many exciting people.
Odysseus Odysseus was an exciting hero. Homer made him into someone who was smart and cunning, and powerful. He was called Ulysses in english. Odysseus was the king of the island Ithaca. His parents were Laertes and Anticleia. He had one son, Telemachus, and he was married to Penelope. Odysseus is cursed and blessed by many gods. Athena likes him and tries to help him, while Posedion doesn't because he hurt his son Polyphemus. He cares about his family and does everything he can to get home.
