Archimedes

Archimedes  life Archimedes was born in 287 b.c. His father was a man named phidias. He lived for 75 years and lived in Syracuse Italy. He used dust and ash to write and draw. He sometimes forgot to eat because he was so engrosed in his work.He was a brilliant mathematician. He developed geometry and found the volume of a sphere. He died in 212 b.c. He was killed by a Roman Soldier during the siege of Syracuse. The tomb of Archimedes is famous for it depicts his famous diagram, A sphere in a cylinder of the exact height and diameter. Archimedes had earlier proved that the volume and surface area of the sphere would be two thirds that of the cylinder.

In 75 B.C., 137 years after the death of Archimedes, it was Cicero who was responsible for giving respect and attention to Archimedes' tomb, which had not been taken care of. Cicero had heard about the tomb of Archimedes, but it took him a long time to find it, as the local residents were unable to help. Ultimately he found it at the Agrigentine gate in Syracuse, covered in bushes. He cleaned up the tomb and let it be.

war inventions Archimedes invented war mirrors to set fire to attacking ships sails. He created alot of inventions to protect Syracuse from the attacking romans. He also built a device to move water from a low place to a high place called the archimedes screw. He also made a steam cannon which used rapedly heated steam to propel objects toward enemy ships. He also invented alot of items that we use every day, like the pulley the screw and the lever.

displacement Archimedes was the person that discovered water displacement. A king suspected that his gold crown was made of silver instead of gold, so Archimedes used displacement of water to find out if the crown was gold or silver. First he weighed the same amount of silver as the crown and recorded how much water spilled over. Then he did the same for the gold and the crown. That's how Archimedes found out that the crown was silver instead of gold.
