The Events At first the Olympics was only a 200 yard footrace, it was called the stade. Then they added another race twice as long as the stade. After that the Pentathelon and wrestling were added in 708 BC. Later, chariot racing and boxing were added in as well.

The Reward If you won the games you were considered a hero. You would receive an abundance of gifts. The winners always got olive branch crowns and became famous. Also they received large amounts of money from their home village as well.

When It All Started There was a Poem by a famous Greek poet named Pindar written in 5th century BC. The Poem stated Pelops was the creator of the games and it said he did it to celebrate his victory in the Trojan War that made him king. The Olympics started in 776 BC. And the first year was when the winners names were written down. an Olympiad was the name of the four years in between the games, the period of time we use today to know the interval of time between two olympics. The Olympiad was a way of recording time in between the games for the greeks, and was also used regardless of the games.

Where The games were in Olympia. Olympia is a wooded valley and held big temples for Zues and Hera, and was also known as a spiritual gathering place for them.

The Fans And The Competetors Men were the only competetors in the real Olympic games. Only Men and certain priestesses were allowed to watch the Olympics. The "Heraea" was the only sporting event for the women of Ancient Greece.
