2025 ASSESSMENT FEE SCHEDULE:
November 1, 2024 – January 25, 2025 $18 January 26, 2025 – March 31, 2025 $24 April 1, 2025 – December 31, 2025 $30
1. WHR inventory assessments must be completed and paid in full prior to registering calves born in the current assessment period, (i.e. 2025 assessment on a dam must be completed and paid in order to register her calf born in 2025.)
2. Included with each assessment is the registration of a calf born to the dam in the year she was assessed (if calf is registered prior to one year of age) and a free transfer of said calf (if recorded within 60 days from the date of the sale.) (i.e. cost to register a calf born in 2025 to an assessed 2025 dam will be $0, if calf is registered within 12 months)
*Calves born in previous year(s) to unassessed dams will incur additional fees.
Membership Deadline
The Annual ASA Adult WHR Membership deadline was pushed back to April 1. Any TOC breeder that does not renew their membership before April 1, 2025 must become a WHR breeder – if they choose to renew after the new April 1 deadline.
Send DNA Directly to Neogen
Breeders can now send and are encouraged to send DNA samples directly to Neogen for testing rather than sending to the ASA office. Starting July 1, 2023, a manual processing fee will be incurred for those samples sent to the ASA office for preprocessing.
3 things will be required to send samples in for testing: 1. A registration (or recorded “U”) number for each tested animal
2. A paper copy of the finalized testing form, (emailed from staff, description below) which includes the Neogen order number
3. A barcode number for each animal tested
Breeders can queue up animals for testing in DigitalBeef and select which sample types they have, as well as which tests they want. Once the form is submitted, staff will process the testing request and get an order ID # from Neogen. A finalized printable PDF of the submission form will be emailed to you to print, sign and send to the lab with samples. Checks/ payments are still made to the ASA. Once staff approves the testing request, the breeder’s DigitalBeef account is billed accordingly.

Celebrating the Strength of the Shorthorn Family
As we approach the holiday season, a time so deeply associated with family and gratitude, I’m reminded of the unique connection we all share as part of the Shorthorn breed community. This season is special not only for the magic that fills the air but also for the warmth of gathering with loved ones—a feeling that truly embodies the Shorthorn family. Shorthorn breeders and enthusiasts everywhere are bound together by a love for the breed that goes beyond cattle; it’s the people, relationships, and shared history that give this community its strength.
The Shorthorn breed has long prided itself on being “The Family-Friendly Breed,” and for good reason. It’s a breed that welcomes people of all ages and backgrounds, one that connects generations through a shared love for these remarkable cattle. I am especially grateful for the Shorthorn Juniors, whose passion for showing and raising Shorthorn females is inspiring to see. Their growth and commitment reflect a bright future and underscore the breed’s acceptance in the industry. Watching young people develop a love for Shorthorns is not only encouraging for the breed but also a reminder of the lasting value of tradition, knowledge, and hands-on experience. These Juniors are the future of Shorthorn cattle, and they carry forward the spirit of dedication that is the foundation of our breed.
This year, we’ve also seen an influx of new members—a record number of over 100 new senior members joining the Shorthorn family in just the first 75 days of the fiscal year. Each new member strengthens our community and brings fresh perspectives and dedication. It’s our job to ensure they feel welcomed and supported as part of this wonderful
Shorthorn family. Because as much as we love and appreciate our cattle, it’s ultimately the people who make the breed what it is. Shorthorn cattle are the tools, but the people are the driving force—the ones who shape the future and who inspire each other to grow and succeed.
We are also fortunate to live in an age of advancing technology, allowing us to make even better breeding and management decisions and to share our successes with a larger audience. However, as powerful as technology is, it’s the human connections, shared values, and community support that make the Shorthorn Breed unique.
There’s a contagious positivity in this community, a spirit of support and shared passion that I believe is as magical as any holiday season.
As we close out this year, I want to thank each of you for your commitment to the breed, for sharing in the Shorthorn vision, and for building a future that’s as bright as it is promising. Wishing all Shorthorn breeders, families, juniors, and supporters a joyful holiday season and a prosperous New Year. Together, as a Shorthorn family, we’ll continue to grow, thrive, and strengthen our breed for generations to come.
Happy Holidays

Upcoming Show Reminders
December brings a slight pause in our national show system, but also allows us a much-needed time to recuperate and prepare for all that the new year brings to us in 2025! As we gear up for the coming national shows, it is important to go over the check list for each.
Many of you will be making the trek to Oklahoma City for our 2nd Super National of the show season at Cattlemen’s Congress, and many onto Denver for the National Western Stock Show.
Cattlemen’s Congress returns for the 4th Annual event, once again hosting our E.D.G.E. Shorthorn Show. Late entries will close December 5th. Stalling requests are processed with entries; note there are very specific instructions found on their website to ensure you have the best chance of getting your request. If you have Cattlemen’s Congress questions, please send those to Cassie (cassie@ shorthorn.org) for tie show and Wade (wade@shorthorn.org) for the E.D.G.E. or pen show. DNA for the E.D.G.E.
show was due to the lab on November 1st. If you missed that deadline, take note of the same deadline for next year!
National Western Stock Show (NWSS) comes in next on our schedule for National shows. If you have not entered, late entries will be considered until December 10th. NWSS is building a new facility, pay attention to exhibitor information for any updates to procedures. If you plan to attend both shows, reach out to Wade or Cassie if you need help with schedules.
As January concludes, our team heads to the Fort Worth Stock Show (FWSS). Unique to FWSS, ownership for open animals must match the exhibitor’s name on entries provided to FWSS. This ownership will be evaluated at checkin. The owner and/or exhibitor is not required to show the animal during the open show. Please transfer any animals to the exhibitor prior to the ownership deadline.
Dixie Nationals in Jackson, Mississippi wraps up our show season
as the final National Show of the year. Entries should open soon and close the end of January. The open show will be held Saturday, February 15th. This is a simple show that many exhibitors attend to collect show points to secure their year-end placing.
Full schedules of these Super National and National shows can be found in the News & Notes section in the back of this issue.
As a reminder, please let us know if you will not be attending a show you have entered. This will speed up check in and allow us to reallocate tie spaces if needed. We appreciate your cooperation to ensure a good experience for all.
We look forward to seeing you at upcoming events! Should you need anything as you prepare, we are happy to assist you with your needs. Happy Holidays from ASA, we look forward to seeing everyone as we ring in 2025.

American Shorthorn Association 2024 Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet
The 2024 Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet, held in conjunction with the American Royal, kicked off on the evening of October 25 at the ASA office with a social for breeders to gather and enjoy the company of new and old friends. From the perspective of the ASA staff, it is so enjoyable to see the office overflowing from wall to wall with breeders.
During the Annual Meeting on the morning of October 26, 2024, more than 100 members from 25 states gathered at the Hilton Kansas City Airport to elect new ASA board members, learn about the state of the association, and receive awards.
Delegates and attendees convened to listen to Montie D. Soules, Executive Secretary/CEO of ASA, share the State of the Association. This included Key Performance Indicators, finances, and other association updates.
After the report, the nominating committee submitted three candidates for the available board positions. Jeff
Aegerter from Neb., Cary Gilman from Iowa, and Jeff Bedwell from Okla. All three will serve a three-year term; Aegerter and Gilman will serve their first term; Bedwell will serve his second term. The board elected new officers for the nine-member board. The board’s new president is Lee Miller of Ohio, the vice president is Mark Gordon of Ill., and the executive director is John Russell of Texas. They serve alongside Tyler Cates of Ind., John Russell of Texas, and Rick Osterday of South Dakota.
We want to extend a thank you to Toby Jordan for retiring as the 20232024 ASA President, it is not an easy job and he served us well the last year. John Sonderman also deserves a huge thank you as he retired from his six-year term on the board, he put many hours of dedication into serving the breed.
Following the election of board members, attendees heard updates from junior activities, the Shorthorn Youth Development Fund Foundation, the Shorthorn Foundation, and the
Shorthorn Lassies.
After the meeting adjourned, attendees enjoyed a small break for more socializing before a steak luncheon was served.
The final event of the day was the awards presentation. Breeders who registered more than 100 head in a fiscal year were given the Century Club Award. Next, animal owners received certificates for Performance Animals that met certain qualifications. The National and Regional Show Winners for 2023-2024 were recognized with leather banners and metal awards. The final presentations of the evening were special recognition awards. This year the Heritage Awards went to Charles Curtis and Kevin Gibler. The Merit Award recognized Kevin Wendt. The Builders of the Breed were Mike Bennett and David Ragsdale.
In 2025, the ASA Annual Meeting will be October 25 in Kansas City, Missouri with a similar format for the meeting and awards.

Charles Curtis
Charles Curtis of Double C Farm in Rickman, Tennessee, graduated as a Salutatorian from Rickman High School in 1965 and was a National Agriculture 4H winner the same year. When he was a freshman in high school, in the early ‘60s, his dad used Shorthorn bulls and decided to take Charles to the state junior show. Charles loved the Shorthorn cattle, so his dad bought Charles and his brother each a heifer. Charles started showing and fell in love with the breed.
He attended Tennessee Technological University where he was involved on campus as the Block and Bridle Club President in 1967-1968 and President of the Agriculture Club in 1968-1969. He graduated in 1969 with a degree in Animal Science.
He married Sharon in June 1971, and they have three daughters, Christie, Carla, and Courtney. They were blessed with six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Kevin Gibler
Kevin Gibler is part of a lifelong Shorthorn family going back to when his grandfather purchased a registered Shorthorn bull, “Chief” in 1937 followed by the introduction of females his father purchased in 1942. His Father bought Kevin his first female exactly 60 years ago for a 4-H project. That female was the first outside Shorthorn female genetics since the forties. Kevin’s involvement with the American Shorthorn Association began in 1976 as a junior member. As early as the seventies and beyond, he was instrumental in promoting the cattle at local, and regional shows, and local Club Calf sales. Then moving on to Shorthorn sales, Kansas Shorthorn Consignment sales, Oklahoma Classic, American Royal Pen of Three, Polled Congress, and Missouri State Sale. All in total, cattle have sold in twelve different states across the country. Additionally, his family has provided Shorthorn cattle classes for several junior college livestock judging teams for workout events over the years.
Kevin began his involvement with the Kansas Shorthorn Association at the age of 22 as a board member. He has served six terms with the KSA as well as roles of Vice President and President of that association
He was actively involved with the Tennessee Beef Agribition serving on the organizational charter and by-laws committee. He was vice president for two years, president for two years, and past president for four years. He was on the Tennessee Farm Bureau staff for 32 years, serving as director of special programs for 18 years. He was also an advisor for Tennessee Young Farmers for 18 years.
Charles was involved with National Agriculture in the Classroom. He served on the board of directors for eight years including vice president for one year and president for two years.
Some notable cattle owned by Double C Farm include herd sires: TRN Omaha by Hot Commodity, JSF Premier 200G by JSF Optimizer, and Sharben RD Casey 1285 by Byland Red Dog OSD44. Dams include Margie 542, Mona Lisa T32, SULL Ruby, Roan Sue, Dream Lady, SULL Max Rosa, SULL Myrtle Bo, and Shadybrook Delia.
Charles has been a breeder and exhibitor of many Shorthorn cattle at county, regional, state, and national shows for numerous years. He has exhibited several All-Americans, Reserve All-Americans, and All-American Honorees.
If you know Charles, you know he has a passion for not only the Shorthorn breed of cattle, but the people involved. When you see him, he has a smile on his face and is happy to see you.
He wants to thank the Tennessee and American Shorthorn Associations for the many opportunities to serve and work with the best friends and breeders of the greatest beef cattle in the world.
Congratulations Charles Curtis for being selected for this special honor!
various times over the years and supports the Kansas Juniors in multiple ways. He has served on the Kansas Shorthorn/Shorthorn Plus Futurity board since 1990, which wrapped up their 37th prospect Futurity Sale this September. Additionally, he has served two terms on the Missouri Shorthorn Association, ASA Genetics committee, and ASA Nomination Committee. Kevin writes a monthly Shorthorn breed column for the Kansas Livestock Association “Stockman” publication on behalf of the Kansas Shorthorn Association and is currently serving as Secretary/Treasurer holding that appointment since 2018.
He feels it is important to give back to those who came before him and encourages others to serve on the board to share their talents for the Board and Association. Kevin expresses how special it has been meeting the countless people affiliated with the shorthorn breed over the years, but his greatest gift has been his wife of 34 years, Lori.
Congratulations Kevin on being one of the 2024 Heritage Award Winners!
Merit Award 2024
The Shorthorn Merit Award recognizes individuals who support and promote the cattle industry. This award honors those beef cattle industry leaders who have specifically assisted and had a positive influence on the Shorthorn breed. These individuals have been exceptional supporters and dedicated friends of the Shorthorn breed for many years.
Kevin Wendt
Kevin Wendt was first introduced to Shorthorn Cattle and numerous breeders while he was a member of the 1988 livestock judging team at The Ohio State University.
Dr. Tom Turner served as the Judging Team Coach and was Wendt’s Advisor in the College of Agriculture and encouraged him to meet and interact with as many cattle breeders as possible on judging trips and at various State Fairs and shows.
Dr Turner told Wendt that there were several great auctioneers in the Shorthorn breed like Bruce Brooks, however, the breed needed a young auctioneer in the east to cover sales for the breed. Turner took his judging team to every Shorthorn breeder of merit East of the Mississippi and Wendt would introduce himself and build rapport with those breeders.
In 1992 Wendt became the National Auctioneer for the Hampshire Swine Registry and traveled the Midwest State Fair circuit and began doing numerous livestock auctions for purebred breeders. In 1995 at the encouragement of Dr Tom Turner, Dave Greenhorn, Keith Moore and others the Ohio Shorthorn Breeders Association hired Wendt to Cry their annual Fall sale in Eaton, Ohio.
Wendt would continue to sharpen his skills as a cattle auctioneer selling other breeds and club calf sales in the Midwest and was hired to sell the club calf sale for Farrer Stock Farm in Royal Center, Indiana. Shortly after that, the Ohio Shorthorn Breeders Association voted Wendt as the Auctioneer of the Ohio Beef Expo sale in 1999. Wendt worked his first expo sale with Don Cagwin, Dr. Roger Hunsley, Richard Carmichael, and the Late Eugene McDonald. In the summer of 1999, Wendt received his first phone call from a well-known Shorthorn breeder Barry Jordan of Waukaru Polled Shorthorns. Barry indicated that Bruce Brooks had a scheduling conflict, and he remembered Wendt from the Ohio State Livestock Judging team, the Ohio Beef Expo, and seeing him sell Hampshire sales at the Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio State Fairs and thought his enthusiasm and professionalism would be a great fit for the Waukaru Share the Harvest Sale.
Wendt wearing his “Woody Hayes” Ohio State Ball Cap showed up at Waukaru again working with Don Cagwin, Dr Roger Hunsley, Darryl Rahn, Alan Sears, John Meents, Kent Jaecke, and Jeff Aegerter. Cagwin called him the “Piggy Auctioneer” and thus the name “Piggy” became part of Wendt’s trademark in Shorthorn circles. At the Waukaru auction, several prominent breeders were in attendance. Each of those firms made quick decisions to secure Wendt as their auctioneer of the future.

Mike Bennett
Mike Bennett’s family has been in the cattle business for over 140 years, tracing back to his wife’s great-grandparents, who homesteaded in Ducor, California, in the 1880s. Herefords were the backbone of their operation and continue to be an important part of the herd today. Coming from a citrus family, Mike also had a Hereford herd, and three of his brothers showed Herefords. So, when Mike’s daughter expressed interest in showing cattle, we decided she should explore a different breed, so she did not compete with her brother, Casey, who is close in age.
Over 30 years ago, Joe Christian from KA’BA Ranch and Kirk Stierwalt visited the Mike Bennett ranch for a calf sale and left a Shorthorn heifer with his daughter’s name on it. When she became frustrated about not having a Shorthorn bull to breed her heifers, the family met the Bakenhus family, who introduced them to the Shorthorn breed in a deeper way. This marked the beginning of their family’s journey with Shorthorn cattle.
The family traveled across the country with Brooke, attending numerous Junior Nationals, the NAILE, Denver, and Kansas City events. Through these experiences, they connected with wonderful families who became friends, reinforcing that the Shorthorn community is family-oriented. The Williams, Ragsdale, and French families not only offered friendship but also shared invaluable knowledge. Jim, David, and Steve were particularly generous with their time and insights, helping Mike understand how to enhance their cattle operation.
Through this process, Mike gained a deeper understanding of the breed’s potential and how other breeders successfully leveraged
it. Mike recognized that, given their unique location and environment, they needed to adapt our Shorthorns to make them more viable for commercial use while retaining their appealing appearance. Mike’s vision for integrating the breed into their operation involved exploring different genetics and challenging himself to achieve our goals. Their grazing conditions differ from the Midwest, and since their breeding season occurs in the fall—when their rain falls between November and April—their cows must efficiently utilize available feed and be capable of walking a mile or more for water while maintaining their body condition.
Mike found that crossing Angus or Hereford bulls with their Shorthorns produced exceptional cows, which are now the foundation of their commercial herd. This journey motivated Mike to become actively involved in the Association, with his goal being to improve the breed’s perception in the commercial cattle industry. Mike firmly believes that the consumer is their primary focus.
Having served as Vice President of the California Cattlemen’s Association, a committee member of the NCBA, Chairman of the California Rangeland Trust, and more recently, the president of the American Shorthorn Association, Mike has gained valuable insights into the industry’s current state and its future direction. Mike is eager to play a role in elevating the breed and making a meaningful impact within the Association.
Congratulations to Mike Bennett on this special honor!
David Ragsdale
David Ragsdale’s journey into the world of Shorthorn cattle began in 1964. At the tender age of nine when his father, Jack Ragsdale, gifted him his first Shorthorn heifer, young David made a significant mark by stealing the show at the Bluegrass Fair of Kentucky held at the Red Mile, a moment that foreshadowed his future successes.
This early start set the stage for a lifelong passion and dedication to the breed. Throughout his illustrious career, David has been a pivotal figure in the Shorthorn community. He served as the committee chairman of the American Shorthorn Association, where his leadership was instrumental in working with the board. In 1996, as part of the Performance Committee, he played a crucial role in the passing of the Whole Herd Reporting, a significant advancement for the industry. David’s influence extended beyond the American Shorthorn Association. In the late 1990s, he became the President of the National Polled Shorthorn Society, further cementing his reputation as a leader in the field. His commitment to the breed also saw him take on the role of President of the Kentucky Shorthorn Association, where he continued to advocate for and advance the interests of Shorthorn cattle breeders. In addition to his leadership roles, David has been a key figure in performance testing bull sales at the University of Kentucky, serving as chairman and ensuring the highest standards in cattle performance testing. His expertise and dedication have been recognized through the
numerous champions he has exhibited over four decades, both in the United States and Canada.
He has developed his private label, J Davy Beef, and constantly strives to perfect it, ensuring the highest quality of meat. David has also collaborated with numerous breeders across the globe, sharing his knowledge and expertise to improve the quality of Shorthorn cattle. These collaborations have not only enhanced his breeding program but have also contributed significantly to the global Shorthorn community. David has been actively involved in educational initiatives, conducting workshops and seminars for young breeders and students interested in cattle breeding. His efforts have helped educate the next generation of breeders on best practices and innovations in the industry. David Ragsdale’s contributions to the Shorthorn cattle industry are immeasurable. His legacy is one of passion, leadership, and unwavering commitment to excellence in cattle breeding. It is an honor for him to be recognized as a Builder of the Breed, a testament to his lifelong dedication and impact on the Shorthorn community. His influence is truly global, having sold semen, embryos, and cattle across six continents.
Congratulations David on the honor of being a 2024 Builder of the Breed!

Shorthorn Show Honoree
George S. Six
In the late 1960s, after purchasing their first farm in Gilmore Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania, the 6’s Polled Shorthorns had a small group of Polled Hereford cattle. George Six bought a heifer from a neighbor that was half Hereford/half Shorthorn and after maturity she was 500 pounds heavier and two frame scores larger than the Polled Herefords. That is when George became interested in the Shorthorn breed and began searching for a Shorthorn bull.
In the spring of 1971, George went to Core Brothers Shorthorns in Core, West Virginia, and bought a son of Thomas Durham 22B. In the fall of that same year, he went back and bought three heifers from Core Brothers and continued to do that each fall for a few years and soon eliminated the Polled Hereford from the herd.
Prior to the American Shorthorn Association having a performance program, 6’s Polled Shorthorns participated in performance testing through Penn State University. In the 1970s and 1980s, George and Patty along with their three children, Sheila, Gary and Ron, showed Shorthorns at Jacktown and Greene County Fairs, Pennsylvania State Shorthorn Show in Hookstown, the Eastern National
Shorthorn Show, and the West Virginia State Fair.
In 1981, a bull by the name of Windholme Robin King 959 was purchased from Windholme Farm in Orange, Virginia. Windholme had shown him all over the eastern states that year and George first used him in 1982. He was a really great bull for his time – would probably still work on a lot of cattle today.
In the 1980s, 6’s Polled Shorthorns purchased two additional contiguous farms. Through the 1980s and 1990s, George and Patty traveled east of the
Mississippi to almost all production and consignment sales, being away from the farm almost every weekend in the fall. During this time, George also served as the state representative to the American Shorthorn National Convention.
The Six’s were also involved with the Keystone Autumn Klassic Sale with their friends, Bradley and Shirley Eisiminger, with Patty being the Clerk of that Sale from its beginning until her death in 2002. The Keystone Autumn Klassic Sale was the longest continuous consignment sale in the United States, having its final sale in 2021 after 43 years. In the fall of 2023, George’s grandson, Zach Six, began the Legends of Fall Shorthorn Sale where 6’s Polled Shorthorns serve as hosts.
From a few head of Polled Hereford cattle to now currently owning approximately 100 Shorthorns. There are currently four generations of the Six Family living on the farm and working and showing Shorthorn cattle. George is the proud grandfather of six grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren with another one expected to arrive in the near future. Most of his time now is spent chasing parts to repair machinery, hauling round bales from the various farms where we raise hay, and watching my great-granddaughters show Shorthorns.
Congratulations to George Six on being the Keystone International Livestock Expo Shorthorn Show Honoree!

Shorthorn Show Honoree
Kendrick Berg
Berg Shorthorns is now a fourthgeneration grain and livestock farm located in North Central Iowa. Orville and Georgia purchased their first shorthorn heifers in 1955. Showing cattle has always been a united family affair. Kendrick was eleven years old and was awarded Reserve Champion Steer at the Chicago International Livestock Show in 1959. With the winnings from his steer, they invested in purchasing more Shorthorn cows into the business. Kendrick and his brother, Sherman, grew up showing their Shorthorn cattle. They were very proud of their pen of three Shorthorn steers that were Champions in all the major cattle shows around the United States.
Kendrick graduated from Osage High School and attended the Agriculture Farm Courses at Iowa State University. He also served 7 years in the Iowa National Guard. When Kendrick met Theresa, her family also was involved in raising Shorthorns. So, after they were married she had a few cattle of her own which Kendrick jokes that were quickly updated in their herd.
Kendrick had the privilege to travel to Ireland in the late 70s with Don Cagwin and Ron Hofstrand to view and purchase Shorthorn cattle. He purchased Limerick Will, one of their herd bulls. They found Limerick grazing chained in an old castle courtyard. Among some of their herd sires were Packer’s Leader Wonder, Ranson 139, CF Classic, Studer’s Controller (Champion of the National Western Livestock Show), Sull Red Value, Kane Boulevard and presently NF Find Out. These bulls have continuously improved a higher level of their breeding stock. Berg Shorthorns have an annual purebred Shorthorn sale offering great show prospects who will continue to be productive in the pasture. Berg’s have sold purebred Shorthorn cattle to breeders throughout the United States for over 69 years.
Kendrick was President of the North Central Iowa Shorthorn Board of Directors, President of the Mitchell County Cattlemen; President of the Iowa Shorthorn Board of Directors; and a Director of the Shorthorn Polled Congress. He also served 12 years on the Central Livestock Board of Directors
at the St Paul, Minnesota Stock Yards. Kendrick also had the honor of judging the Houston Livestock Show; the American Royal in Kansas City, and Indiana State Fair.
Kendrick and Theresa now enjoy watching as son, Josh, and wife, Ashley,
and daughters Madeline, Kaitlyn, Lauren and Autumn carry on the fourthgeneration family legacy.
Congratulations to Kendrick Berg on being this year’s American Royal Shorthorn Show Honoree.

Lydia L. O’Brien, age 93, of Lodi, Wisconsin, passed away on September 12, 2024.
She was born on November 8, 1930, in Westpoint Township, the daughter of the late Stanley and Marion (Herr) Miller.
Lydia Lou was the third generation to operate Miller Farms Shorthorns, along with her brother Phillip and husband Bob O’Brien. Miller Farms was known for showing large strings of awardwinning Shorthorns at the Chicago International, Wisconsin and Minnesota State Fairs and the National Western Stock Show. In the 1980’s, her nephews and niece, and subsequently their children took over showing Miller Farms
cattle at the state and national level.
Lydia Lou was well known among Wisconsin Shorthorn families as the most passionate herdsman and was knowledgeable about cow lineage and the history of the breed. She avidly tracked cow bloodlines and looked forward to reading her Shorthorn Country and every sale catalog delivered in her mailbox. She loved watching online sales with her nephews and staying up to date with the Shorthorn industry. She also loved helping young people get into the Shorthorn industry and sold many heifers to juniors who still have those cow lines in their herds.
In addition, Lydia Lou had her own winning flock of Southdown sheep and was known to have many bottle lambs living in her back porch during lambing season. She enjoyed watching her great nieces and nephews show sheep at the local and state levels.
Richard David Workman, (Rick), 74, of Bellaire, OH passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at his home. He was born May 19, 1950, in Bellaire, OH, a son of the late David William Workman and Zelda Mae Winzenreid Workman.

Shorthorn Breeders’ Association, an avid Ohio State Buckeyes fan, a 1968 graduate of Bellaire High School and was a United States Army Veteran. Rick loved Shorthorn cattle and was active with the family’s, Key Ridge Shorthorn Farm. He was also the owner of Key Ridge Kennels and was the owner and breeder of Border Collies.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Armando Perez.
He is survived by his brother, Bob (Ladonna) Workman, sister, Marjorie Perez; four nieces/nephews, Jeff Workman, Becky (Corey) Betts, Brent (Leanne) Workman, and Michelle (Brian) Brennan; and eight great nieces/
In 2022, Miller Farms Shorthorns was sold to the Quam family, whose matriarch, Marjorie Quam is Lydia Lou’s sister. The Quam’s kept Lydia Lou involved in herd oversight, giving valuable input and guidance.
Lydia Lou found great pride and pleasure in driving her Kabota through the pastures with her Blue Heeler at her side, and would often drive to the highest ridge to reflect while watching her Shorthorn cows graze. She loved nothing more than her Shorthorn cows and Blue Heelers.
Lydia is survived by her three sisters, Marilyn Schwister, Marjorie Quam, and Mary Jeanne Thompson; and many nieces and nephews.
In honor of Lydia Lou’s passion for the Shorthorn breed and youth development, a memorial scholarship will be established in her name through The Shorthorn Foundation.
