Send DNA Directly to Neogen

Breeders can now send and are encouraged to send DNA samples directly to Neogen for testing rather than sending to the ASA office. Starting July 1, 2023, a manual processing fee will be incurred for those samples sent to the ASA office for preprocessing.

3 things will be required to send samples in for testing: 1. A registration (or recorded “U”) number for each tested animal

2. A paper copy of the finalized testing form, (emailed from staff, description below) which includes the Neogen order number

3. A barcode number for each animal tested

Breeders can queue up animals for testing in DigitalBeef and select which sample types they have, as well as which tests they want. Once the form is submitted, staff will process the testing request and get an order ID # from Neogen. A finalized printable PDF of the submission form will be emailed to you to print, sign and send to the lab with samples. Checks/ payments are still made to the ASA. Once staff approves the testing request, the breeder’s DigitalBeef account is billed accordingly.

The Power of Hope in the New Year Association Outlook

As we usher in a new year, January is a perfect time to reflect on the vital role hope plays in our lives. Hope is more than just a feeling; it is a driving force that propels us forward, even in the face of challenges. Harvey Mackay once eloquently expressed the profound impact of hope, and it inspired me to delve into its significance— especially for those of us in agriculture and as Shorthorn breeders.

In our industry, hope is embedded in every decision we make. When selecting a bull and cow for breeding, we hope for the best possible calf to be born. As we plant our crops, we hope for favorable weather and a bountiful harvest that will yield a profit. Hope sustains us as we face uncertainties like market fluctuations and ever-changing environmental conditions. In agriculture, hope isn’t just abstract; it is a lifeline.

Lou Holtz, the legendary football coach, captured the essence of hope in his timeless wisdom. He said that everyone needs four things in life to avoid a tremendous void:

1. Something to do.

2. Someone to love.

3. Someone to believe in.

4. Something to hope for.

These four elements resonate deeply with Shorthorn breeders. Our “something to do” involves the diligent care of our cattle and crops. “Someone to love” includes our families and the community that binds us together. “Someone to believe in” inspires trust in each other and faith in our collective mission. And “something to hope for”— that’s the heart of it all.

Hope fuels our dreams and gives us the drive to turn them into reality. Without hope, we lack the initiative to strive for success. It is the spark that ignites innovation, resilience, and perseverance.

As Shorthorn breeders, hope guides our efforts to achieve excellence in breeding, secure thriving markets, and build strong, sustainable operations.

This new year, take a moment to evaluate your dreams and hopes. Let’s set our sights on achieving them together. Remember, hope is not passive; it is active and essential. Hope motivates us

to take the steps necessary to create the future we envision.

Let us also extend our hope that the breed’s prosperity depends on our breeders’ collective success, and that begins with hope. Together, let’s make 2025 a year filled with fulfillment and success for our Shorthorn family.

We Hope to See Everyone at these Shorthorn Events this Month

Beef Business

Contradictions

If this artistic science that we call breeding cattle was easy, a lot more people would be doing it. Nature, data, cow sense, and common sense need to align to make more good Shorthorn cattle. But what about when nature and the marketplace send us conflicting signals? The example that most often comes to mind, for me, is the marketplace signaling a need for larger fed cattle harvest weights, while the industry simultaneously discusses the needs of cow size moderation and efficiency. While there is a path forward that can make that happen (terminal crossbreeding systems), the path doesn’t necessarily work for a Shorthorn seedstock producer other than ensuring your product is a component of such a crossbreeding system. There’s another conundrum that I want to dive deeper into on this page: generation interval vs selection for longevity.

Generation interval is a term used in the animal breeding community to define the average age of the parents when a calf crop is born. In beef cattle breeding, the average generation interval is often figured to be around five years. As generation interval decreases, genetic progress should be able to happen at a more rapid pace, in theory. That implies that we as livestock breeders are doing our jobs correctly with the selections and matings of our breeding stock. If we’re doing a good job of producing a better product with each mating, the young animals of the next generation should be genetically superior to their older counterparts. One of the inherent disadvantages of raising beef cattle is that with the longer generation intervals we must navigate thanks to Mother Nature, it’s harder to make genetic change at the rate of the pork and poultry industry. It’s like we’re driving a giant cargo ship while

they pilot speedboats. One of those is just more difficult to turn onto a new course.

If cattlemen want to continue charging forward with genetic improvement, and we are making the right decisions to improve each generation, then our younger animals should be more valuable than older breeding stock. In other breed populations, I see breeders selling their mature cows at 5 to 7 years of age, often citing generation turnover as one of the reasons why. Those middle-aged cows are making their generation interval longer than if they’re breeding only yearlings, 2, and 3-year-olds. Plus, that age of cow still has some value to other producers and can recoup more than just a market price for her. It’s a decision made with economic and genetic implications in mind. We don’t see many mature cowherd dispersals in the Shorthorn breed.

However, to figure out which cattle are built for longevity, somebody must give them the chance to be old cows! Keeping these cows in production in your herd for as long as they want to work helps identify the families that are producing stock suited for one of the most beneficial traits to the commercial bottom line: staying power.

I’m not an economist by any means, but I wanted to do some quick, simple math on breakeven and profitability of a cow. You’ll see some of that math in the chart accompanying this article on the next page. I utilized some university extension resources to get a baseline for costs, and recent Iowa feeder cattle market reports for revenue generation. Now, we all know that today’s prices aren’t likely to hold for several years as this chart shows, but it helps keep this illustration simple.

In today’s marketplace, a cow really

doesn’t have to do too much to achieve a financial breakeven in a commercial operation. That’s the beauty of record high cattle markets! Cows working at a profitable level in your herd for longer periods of time are valuable assets. Once she is out of debt, the more money she is putting in your pocket. We all like the sounds of that, and the guys buying Shorthorn bulls sure appreciate it. They know what it takes to keep their operation afloat, obviously, or they wouldn’t still be producing. It’s why so many of them are coming to Shorthorn to make those crossbred cows (that can be a piece of the initial conundrum that kicked off this article…)

And what about performance vs longevity? If we are strictly worried about having cows that turn a profit, there’s got to be a production level where the amount of pounds produced trumps being around for an extra year, right? Using these same expenses and prices, a group of cows that bring in calves that are 50 lb. heavier reach breakeven a year sooner and put $900 per cow more profit in the war chest by the time they are 7-year-old cows. Another way to look at that is that the cows raising a heavier calf can encounter about $100/ cow/year more cost on them and still pencil her breakeven at 6 years old. The cows weaning heavier calves reach the same level of profit at 8 years of age as the other cows do at 9 years old. Of course, in this scenario, both sets of cows have some built in longevity if they are making it to those ages. The devil’s advocate question would be if the focus is placed on increasing performance and shortening generation interval, can we create cows that reach profitable levels even sooner? Once she turns a profit, can’t you cash her out to make room for the newer, better females coming along?

Matt Woolfolk director of performance programs

So, what’s the right answer? Much like the heavy steers from smaller cows discussion, I don’t know what the right answer is. Some will read this and likely think “Matt said we should cull our older cows to make room for heifers.” Other might have read “Matt doesn’t want to push the genetic envelope by shortening generation interval, but rather just wants to see how old we can make our cows.” Honestly, I think we need it all! We need to make genetic progress, have our cows in a position to turn a profit for us and the folks using our bulls, and identify the genetics that can last in a commercial setting for a while. Situations like this are what drive so many of us to keep trying our hand at cattle breeding year after year.

In the Know

Beginning the Year and Rounding Out the Show Season

Right as the flurry of activities that come with the Holiday season calm down, we are thrown right into a busy start of the year with multiple National Shows. As you pack the trailers, throw in the crockpot meals and warm clothes, the ASA staff has been busy preparing for the upcoming Shorthorn shows.

We start our busy January in Oklahoma City at the Cattlemen’s Congress. Back for the second year, we be hosting the E.D.G.E. Show again. The Summit National Shorthorn Sale is always a highlight at the Cattlemen’s Congress and at the National Western Stock Show. You can find those catalogs at shorthorncountry.net or CCi.Live.

As we pack up from OKC, we head directly to Denver for the National Western Stock Show, double check the arrival procedures on the NWSS

website. NWSS has been working on a new facility for the ‘hill’ cattle that will be ready for the 2026 NWSS. It will be exciting to see what all they have accomplished on it since last year. If you haven’t visited the new yards that was completed two years ago, be sure to stop by and see those pen cattle and the sale facility in which The Summit Sale at Denver will take place in.

As we wrap up January and move into February, we will be gearing up to head south to Texas. The Fort Worth Stock Show is always an exciting show to attend. As you travel to this show, double check those registration papers. Fort Worth is a bit unique, and the ownership on the registration paper must match the name on the open entries. If you should find these not matching up, you can transfer the animal into the correct name

prior to the ownership deadline.

We round out the show season with the Dixie Nationals in Jackson, Mississippi. Entries should be open and close at the end of January. If you are watching your show points, and looking to gain a few more, this is a great show to attend.

You can view the detailed schedules for these National Shows in the News & Notes section of this issue.

We look forward to traveling to these shows every year and once we are home, we always sit back and wonder how we do it? But thanks to the Family Friendly Shorthorn Breed, you all make it enjoyable to go to work every day. Bring on 2025!

Starting the New Year

The new year brings a fresh start, brimming with opportunities for growth and change. Whether it’s personal goals, new adventures, or exciting challenges, there’s always something to look forward to. It’s a time to reflect on past lessons, embrace new beginnings, and set your sights on what’s ahead. From achieving new milestones to finding new relationships, the possibilities are endless. The best part? The future is unwritten, and it’s up to you to make the most of every moment.

For those involved in showing cattle, the new year holds plenty to look forward to. As the new show season approaches, there’s excitement around the opportunity to refine skills, improve herd quality, and showcase the hard work put into breeding and training. Each new year brings the chance to compete at prestigious events, forge stronger connections with fellow breeders and exhibitors, and gain valuable insights from the competition.

It’s also a time to evaluate genetics,

potentially invest in new cattle, and set breeding goals to enhance livestock quality. The rhythm of daily care, feeding routines, and training becomes a rewarding journey as you prepare for upcoming shows. Whether it’s the thrill of winning a ribbon, banner, or simply just being in the ring, the satisfaction of seeing your cattle thrive is most rewarding. The new year offers fresh possibilities to grow, learn, and celebrate achievements in the show cattle world. The dedication pays off, and each success, big or small, marks a new chapter in a fulfilling and ever-evolving passion.

With the New Year this means Cattlemen’s Congress is right around the corner and we could not be more excited to see everyone. For those who can not make it to Oklahoma don’t fret there are plenty more shows to get to. Finally with the New Year it puts us into the year for 2025 Junior Nationals in Nebraska!

We wish everyone a Happy New Year and we can not wait to see everyone throughout this year’s show season!

Shorthorn Show Honoree

The Cates Family

Rex Cates, the founder of Cates Farms started from humble beginnings as a share-crop farmer. Like many farmers in the 1940s, their farms were very diversified including hogs, chickens, milk cows, sheep, and a few commercial beef cows.

What started as a 4-H project of showing Shorthorn cattle quickly became one of the most dominant Shorthorn herds in the country. In the late 1970s, Rex Cates and his two sons, Brian and Randy, started buying Shorthorn cattle to start their herd. By the early 1980’s, they had their first production sale, and every year since but one they have kept up the tradition. Today the production sale is known as the “Star Search Sale”, which occurs every Saturday on Labor Day Weekend.

In the early 1990s, Cates Farms began to make a name for itself by exhibiting high-quality cattle and producing the famous herd sire to the breed, CF Trump. He is still relevant in the herd today, as many of the cattle carry his genetics.

At that same time, the third generation of Cates Farm had begun to make his mark. Tyler Cates, Brian’s son, had returned to the farm with new ideas to keep the operation headed in the right

direction.

Today, Tyler and his wife, Cortney along with the fourth-generation of Cates Farms, their daughter Piper, own and operate Cates Farms in Modoc, Indiana.

Cates Farms has exhibited over 30 National Champion or Reserve National Champion Females and more than 15 National Champion or Reserve Champion bulls. The common theme behind these proud accomplishments is hard work and customer appreciation. Because of the customer relationships formed, the continued success, and the high demand for CF cattle, Cates

Farms started its first fall-born sale called “Modoc Madness.”

Modoc, Indiana is home of the two most dominate Shorthorn Bulls of the Bred, CF Trump and CF Solution, along with a countless number of Donor Females. Cates Farms has survived by not only raising good quality cattle, but by being the same humble country people they started as many years ago.

Shorthorns have been very good to the Cates Family. However, the biggest and best rewards have been the people they have met and the life-long friendships their family has made.

Congratulations to the Cates Family on being our 2024 North American International Livestock Expo Show Honoree.

Lawrence Grathwohl Shorthorn Herdsman of the YearBrittany Blankinship

The Lawrence Grathwohl Herdsman of the Year is voted on by Shorthorn exhibitors who exhibit at the North American International Livestock Expo Super National Shorthorn Show. This year the winner is Brittany Blankinship of Oklahoma.

Brittany is a second-generation Shorthorn breeder. Her passion for the Shorthorn breed started at an early age when she would ride in her car seat to feed and check cattle. Even at that young age, it was obvious that she had a strong passion for cattle that would continue to grow. This passion has helped her develop into a detail-oriented cattlewoman and drives her knowledge of pedigrees to determine breeding and cattle selection decisions.

Brittany started her show career attending her first National Junior Shorthorn Show at nine years old in Lawton, Oklahoma, where she showed a ranch-bred heifer to a first-place buckle. This has led to numerous familybred champions at state, regional, and

national levels.

Brittany has been an integral part of the show barn at Lost Diamond B Ranch, where she is involved with cattle care, whether it is feeding or midnight calving duties, sale cattle preparations, or show cattle prep. She has also been involved in cattle selection and breeding decisions, which has led to numerous show ring awards and a successful annual production sale.

Most notably, Brittany managed two national champion bulls, numerous division and regional champions, and a recent donor herd addition from Cates Farms, who was a national division winner.

Brittany took a short sabbatical from the LDB ranch to follow her passion and further her knowledge with Cates Farms, honing her skills in the show barn and sale cattle preparation. After learning this valuable knowledge, she has returned to focus on her own herd with LDB.

Brittany is happiest when working cattle in the barn or at a Shorthorn cattle

show.

“It really means a lot to be voted as herdsman,” Brittany said. “Receiving this award has been a dream of mine and knowing that people who I look up to in this industry voted for me is a tremendous honor. Every aspect of this life God has blessed me to live, from all the good times and through the hard times. The reward of being able to be a part of this great industry is far greater than the trials that may be faced. I have a deep-rooted passion for what I do and it is an incredible feeling to have this recognition bestowed upon me. The same recognition that has been given to some of the best herdsmen in the breed.”

Congratulations Brittany on being voted by your peers as the 2024 Lawrence Grathwohl Herdsman of the Year, sponsored by the Shorthorn Foundation.

Tartan Plaid

Why be a Lassie?

Over two years ago as I considered my nomination for the Queen’s contest, I spent a lot of time thinking about why. Why did I want to be a Lassie? The crown and tartan plaid have been a part of the Shorthorn breed for many years. An undeniable symbol of the long and strong history in the show ring and in the pastures around our country. Why did I want to wear the crown? My Gramps and his love and respect for Shorthorns, has always been my guiding force with the cattle. Leading one into the show ring or standing ring side handing out awards as State princess, State Queen and National Queen, his unconditional love and support were always my light. Shorthorn cattle and the family of people who raise them is why I chose to be a Lassie. I will be taking my crown off as National Shorthorn Lassie Queen for the last time at the 2025 Cattlemen’s Congress. It will be an honor to crown

Shorthorn Farewell

As the 2023-2024 Alternate National Lassie queen. It has been a great honor to be in this role and I have enjoyed it greatly. I have met so many new people in the shorthorn breed as well as meeting other breed queens and getting to travel around the country. I have traveled over 10,000 miles during my reign. For any ladies that are unsure about running for National queen I say GO FOR IT! I was unsure about running but I don’t regret it one bit. I’d like to say a few thank yous, thank you to my mom for hauling me around in this adventure, from Denver

the next National Shorthorn Lassie, but as I close this chapter, I would like to say thank you to a few people who made this experience possible. I’d also like to take the opportunity to thank to my parents. I was able to travel countless miles and build the memories, make forever friends. The time away from home meant slack and I appreciate you picking it up so I could grow my industry knowledge and have these experiences. Lastly, the support I have received from breeders and other Shorthorn enthusiasts this year has been overwhelming. That generosity meant to the world to me.

As I wrap my reign in a bow, I encourage young people across the country and breed to consider “Why being a Lassie” just might be a great fit for you too!

MacKenna Geeseman, National Shorthorn Lassie Queen 2023-2024

to Timonium. Thank you to Tawana Holland for always being there when I needed something. Anything from hemming my stole overnight at a show or bringing me a new kilt in Kansas city. I am excited to see where the lassies are headed and the ladies that will represent this wonderful breed.
