• Junior members 7 years of age are eligible to show at the Junior National. The Junior member has to be 7 on January 1 of the year the Junior National is taking place to be eligible to show at the Junior National. For example, if a child turned 7 on December 31, 2024 they are eligible to show at the 2025 National Junior Show in Grand Island, Nebraska. If they turned 7 on January 10, 2025, they are NOT eligible to show at this year’s Junior National. Attention Juniors!
2025 WHR assessments will come available to complete online starting November 1, 2024. They will also be printed/sent to those whose preferences are set as so in their DigitalBeef accounts. The Board of Directors approved pushing the deadline windows back, and they are listed below.
2025 ASSESSMENT FEE SCHEDULE:
January 26, 2025 – March 31, 2025 $24 April 1, 2025 – December 31, 2025 $30
1. WHR inventory assessments must be completed and paid in full prior to registering calves born in the current assessment period, (i.e. 2025 assessment on a dam must be completed and paid in order to register her calf born in 2025.)
2. Included with each assessment is the registration of a calf born to the dam in the year she was assessed (if calf is registered prior to one year of age) and a free transfer of said calf (if recorded within 60 days from the date of the sale.) (i.e. cost to register a calf born in 2025 to an assessed 2025 dam will be $0, if calf is registered within 12 months)
*Calves born in previous year(s) to unassessed dams will incur additional fees.
The Annual ASA Adult WHR Membership deadline was pushed back to April 1. Any TOC breeder that does not renew their membership before April 1, 2025 must become a WHR breeder – if they choose to renew after the new April 1 deadline.
Breeders can now send and are encouraged to send DNA samples directly to Neogen for testing rather than sending to the ASA office. Starting July 1, 2023, a manual processing fee will be incurred for those samples sent to the ASA office for preprocessing.
3 things will be required to send samples in for testing: 1. A registration (or recorded “U”) number for each tested animal
2. A paper copy of the finalized testing form, (emailed from staff, description below) which includes the Neogen order number
3. A barcode number for each animal tested
Breeders can queue up animals for testing in DigitalBeef and select which sample types they have, as well as which tests they want. Once the form is submitted, staff will process the testing request and get an order ID # from Neogen. A finalized printable PDF of the submission form will be emailed to you to print, sign and send to the lab with samples. Checks/ payments are still made to the ASA. Once staff approves the testing request, the breeder’s DigitalBeef account is billed accordingly.
Monday - Thursday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
Friday 8:00 am to 2:00 pm Central Time Zone (ASA Staff Meeting Tuesdays 10:00-11:00 AM)
The American Shorthorn Association (ASA) is proud to introduce its newly redesigned website, launched in early March. This fresh, modern platform enhances user experience and provides streamlined access to essential information for breeders, exhibitors, and Shorthorn enthusiasts. Developed in collaboration with IMC, the website boasts a contemporary design, improved navigation, and interactive features to keep our members informed and engaged.
One of the most exciting updates is the inclusion of Junior National entries, now accessible through the website. As part of this year’s event, we are introducing the E.D.G.E. (Exposition Driving Genetic Excellence) Show, which highlights the importance of both Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) and visual evaluation in breeding decisions. Details on this innovative show are included in the EDGE Newsletter, which can be found in the Junior National section of the website. To encourage participation, exhibitors who enter and lead their heifer in the E.D.G.E. Show will receive a reimbursement of the $45 entry fee.
The E.D.G.E. Show will evaluate cattle in two stages: first by ranking them solely based on their EPDs and genetic indexes, and then by traditional phenotype judging. The combined results will determine class winners, with division and grand champions selected based on both data and visual merit. Thanks to breeder sponsorships, significant cash prizes are being awarded: $2,500 for the Grand Champion E.D.G.E. Heifer and $1,000 for the Reserve Grand Champion E.D.G.E. Heifer.
Understanding how to effectively use EPDs is crucial for breeders looking to improve their herds. A common mistake is focusing on individual high-ranking traits rather than an animal’s overall
Montie D. Soules asa executive secretary/CEO
genetic balance. Successful selection should prioritize animals that rank consistently well across multiple traits rather than excelling in only a few. Overemphasizing single traits can lead to unintended consequences, such as increased management requirements or reduced fertility and efficiency.
Percentile rankings offer valuable insight when analyzing EPDs, as they indicate how an animal compares to the rest of the breed. Breeders should focus on balanced cattle that contribute to long-term herd sustainability rather than chasing extreme values. By setting selection parameters based on overall herd goals, breeders can maintain efficiency, productivity, and genetic
progress within their herds.
The new ASA website serves as a resource to help members navigate EPDs, genetic selection, and industry events.
We encourage all breeders to explore the site, take advantage of the enhanced tools, and consider participating in the E.D.G.E. Show. As we continue to innovate and strengthen the Shorthorn breed, these advancements will play a pivotal role in driving genetic excellence and commercial acceptance. Stay informed, stay engaged, and we look forward to seeing you at the National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference! Above is a representation of having balanced EPDs, primarily in the
Springtime is here, and after this past winter, we are ready for it at the ASA. Spring is always an exciting time as the weather gets nice, calves are hitting the ground, and the preparation for Junior National begins.
We are wrapping up the 2024-2025 Show Season and are preparing for the 2025-2026 Show Season by reaching out to confirm point shows. These shows are announced on page 24 and are subject to change if needed. You can also find this information on our new website under the events tab and then ASA Shows.
While we work on wrapping up the previous year’s show season, Cassie and I are diligently checking show results and configuring show points from the 2024-2025 points shows. You can check these points using DigitalBeef and clicking “Show Points” on the navigational menu. Once compiled, we will announce the National Show Award winners, including overall & division winners and the overall & division Regional Show Award winners in the May/June Shorthorn Country issue. Where applicable, runner-up animals will be recognized.
As you gear up and prepare for Junior Nationals, now is a great time to get animals registered, transferred, and DNA submitted to the lab if required. All these things can be accomplished through your Digital Beef account. Check out this list, to double check you are all ready to get Groovy in Grand Island.
- Animals must be registered at time of entry and registration number must be provided on entry.
- Animals entered at any ASA Junior sponsored show, must be in a one sole junior name. Ownership deadline for the NJSS is May 15.
- E.D.G.E. Animals must have DNA submitted and received by the lab by May 1. These animals must also have BW and WW recorded in the registry. Please contact me if you have any questions,
wade@shorthorn.org
We look forward to seeing you all in Grand Island for a funky, fun time. Check out all other Junior National information on page 45 and 46. Also be
on the lookout for the 2024-2025 Show animals of the year in the next issue of the Shorthorn Country magazine.
The cattle ownership deadline for all cattle for Junior Nationals has been changed from May 1 to May 15, 2025.
No farm or family names allowed. Single ownership only!
We all know that the big feature of the National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference is the cattle show portion. Junior members prepare all year long to exhibit their cattle at the biggest show of the year. But there is so much more to the NJSS than just a show. The contests are just as big of a deal to many of our attendees and if you haven’t yet participated in the contests, we encourage you to try. If you have participated, we encourage you to try at least one new one that you haven’t done before. There is a contest for everyone depending on your interests and future goals.
The speech contest builds public speaking skills which will be used throughout the rest of your life, whether it is doing a presentation in college or interview for a future job. This contest helps prepare you for that future.
You want to be a chef? Participate in the beef cook-off contest to show off your cooking skills and knowledge about the beef industry. This year the cut of choice is brisket. Stand out by showing your unique recipe.
Zoom in on your subject and focus when taking that photo. The photography contest helps develop creative skills. Who knows? Maybe one day you will be taking cattle photos for sale catalogs.
Do you enjoy looking at Shorthorn cattle? Participating in the livestock judging contest will hone your ability to pick the best of the best. Many of our
junior members compete in livestock judging in 4H and FFA, later judging at a junior and senior college level.
Preparing for the future can never start too early. Senior age (17-21) participants are encouraged to participate in the career development contest. You submit your resume and cover letter based on provided job descriptions. These materials are critiqued, and you participate in a mock job interview at NJSS. This contest helps youth prepare for scholarship interviews and job interviews!
Can you knit, paint, woodwork, or have a special artistic talent? Compete in the Arts & Crafts contest to display these talents. This contest shows of the exceptional abilities of our junior members, and it is amazing to see what is entered each year.
Study Up! NJSS offers TWO different contests to test your Shorthorn and beef industry knowledge. First up is the Cattlemen’s Written Test and is scored individually. Next is the Herdsman Quiz Bowl. States can each have two teams of four consisting of a mix of junior ages. Teams hit the buzzers to answer questions and show their knowledge.
Creativity is featured in many contests at NJSS, including the poster and graphic design contests. Prospector I and II ages create a poster to promote NJSS or Shorthorn Beef (depending on the age). Intermediate and Senior design an eye-catching advertisement to promote AJSA or Shorthorn Beef (depending on
the age).
To compete in Showmanship, you must be on your A-game. Participants are judged on their ability to exhibit their cattle. You must enter for this contest during online entry. The top 10 seniors will be announced at random and placed during the final drive of showmanship.
Maybe public speaking isn’t for you, but you enjoy talking to people. Team salesmanship might be the contest for you! Teams of two will sell a designated item based on their age division. Show off your ability to market when competing in this contest!
Teamwork is important when participating in the team fitting contest. This year, teams will consist of four members with at least 2 prospectors, 1 intermediate and 1 senior. This change is new this year to promote educating the younger members.
TikTok and Reels are all the rage these days. The junior board has added a NEW contest this year to follow that trend. Submit your 60 second (or less) video promoting Shorthorn cattle. It must be submitted in portrait/vertical mode. Winners may be posted on AJSA TikTok!
Participation isn’t mandatory but it is always encouraged! If you plan to submit any digital contest entries including photography, digital photography, speech, graphic design, career development or promo video, be sure to submit those through the online contest form by May 15.
While we were in Oklahoma City in January, the members of the National Lassies had their annual meeting and voted to retain the currently members of the board. We thought that it was time to put faces with names that serve the Lassies currently. Next month, we will highlight the additional members of our board.
Kaila Williams serves as Publicity Director for the National Lassie Association. She is from Duncan, Oklahoma. She grew up raising and showing Shorthorn cattle across the country. In addition to serving on the board of directors of the Oklahoma Shorthorn Association, she also serves as co-show superintendent for state shows. Aside from working as a photographer, Kaila also runs a graphic design and photography business. She enjoys traveling, cooking, baking, and attending livestock shows during her free time.
Hannah Olsen is a director on the National Lassie Board. Hannah is from Berlin, Wisconsin where she lives on her
family’s farm. They have a small herd of Purebred Shorthorns that she and her sister show at the state and national level. She serves as the Wisconsin Junior Shorthorn Association Advisor and as the Wisconsin Shorthorn Lassie Advisor. Hannah has a long history as a Lassie, starting as a state princess, moving up until she was crowned as the 20172018 National Alternate Shorthorn Lassie Queen. Hannah is excited to serve on the National Lassie board and work with the other board members to make impactful improvements to Lassies.
Pam Dressen is serving currently as Treasurer. Alongside her husband, Jim, they farm near Ellsworth, WI where they have purebred Shorthorns, Shorthorn Plus, and crossbred cows. Shorthorn cattle have been an important part of her family for 120 years. Pam’s greatgrandfather bought his first purebred Shorthorn bull from Ohio and had it shipped to Red Wing, MN by train. Jim and Pam have two children, Brianna and Caleb. Brianna and her husband,
Matt Pearson, and their daughter, Flora, raise Shorthorn and Simmental cattle. Caleb and his wife, Kailey, and their son, Bennett, raise crossbred show lambs. Pam taught kindergarten for 38 years in Red Wing, MN and is now retired and enjoying gardening, baking, and reading.
Christina Wenderski is currently serving as our Queen Coordinator. She is from Loraine, Illinois where she lives on a small farm with her husband, Ryan, and son, Troy. Christina is a fourth generation Shorthorn breeder and previously served as the 2003-2004 National Shorthorn Lassie Queen. She is serving her second term as Queen Coordinator and enjoys working with the young ladies across the country serving as representatives for this great breed and organization. Christina currently works for a global animal health company and responsible for their imports and exports for her division. In her spare time, Christina enjoys photography, gardening, and reading.

Mackenlee Evans ajsa director
Sitting down to write this article, I started to reflect on the Shorthorn breed, and what it means to me and my family.
As a 3rd generation Shorthorn breeder, I see the great impact that this breed has had on my family for many decades. As I have become more involved in the Shorthorn breed, I have had the opportunity to meet so many families that have been changed by the Shorthorn breed just as mine has. Walking through the barns at Junior Nationals, or any national show for that matter, you can see the deep family ties that run throughout the barns. I truly believe that the strong tradition and unity carried by Shorthorn families is something that will forever set the Shorthorn breed apart from the rest.
Writing this article has made me dig deeper into my family’s history in the American Shorthorn Association. My family started in the Shorthorn breed in 1982 with my great grandfather joining the association. When my family bought their first Shorthorn, I don’t think they realized that their great grandchildren would take over the family herd. Nor did they realize that the Shorthorn breed would have such an impact on their lives as well. I know I am not the only
one with this experience, many of my friends within the breed are 3rd or 4th generation breeders just like me.
When people look at the Shorthorn breed, they see tradition and legacy because that is exactly what we stand for. As a breed, we are special because so many of the families within the breed are rich with history and traditions. The people that make up our breed have been raising not just cattle, but Shorthorns for generations with no plan to stop that tradition anytime soon.
Without a doubt my family and I have always been very passionate about the Shorthorn breed, that is why I take so much pride in wearing the “red coat”. The Shorthorn breed has made such an impact in my life as a young exhibitor, and I hope to continue that legacy. As a member nearing the end of my junior showing career, I hope to make the same impact on other young showman for many years to come. I encourage other young members to hold true to their family traditions and traditions of the Shorthorn breed.

Election of Board of Directors: All candidates MUST submit a written application that is available from the ASA Director of Youth Activities. Junior board applications will be collected in the ASA office by the designated deadline during the current election year. Candidates for election must be nominated from the floor at the Jr. National Youth Conference meeting. A maximum of two new Board of Directors from each state and/or Junior State Association are allowed to be elected at the same time or year. Each state is allowed a maximum of two candidates running for the board each year. If more than two are interested, the state makes the selection for the two candidates who will represent that state.
A. Open interviews with the state delegates will be conducted at Youth Conference.
B. Junior Board candidates will be interviewed by three qualified industry leaders, normally including but not limited to the ASA Executive and AJSA advisors. The individuals interviewing the candidates will rank them in the same manner that the delegates would. The interview process represents 30% of each candidate ranking toward their total score.
Delegate Representation to Elect Board Members: Each state and/or state association shall appoint two delegates to represent that state at the Junior National Youth Conference meeting normally held at the Junior National. A state may be represented by only one junior organization from each state. Those delegates would vote to elect the Board of Directors at Youth Conference meeting. Each delegate must be a member in good standing of the AJSA in order to serve as a delegate. Said delegates must be AJSA members that are 15 years of age or older. If the association does not have two members present fulfilling this age requirement, they may have younger delegates. All delegates must be junior members of the ASA (AJSA members) and be a member in good standing. The definition of a member in good standing is one that does not have over a 90-day balance on their account with the ASA.
A. Vote Distribution: Election will be conducted at the Youth Conference in the following manner: The number of votes received by each State will be determined by the number of members of the American Junior Shorthorn Association within that Junior Association.
