It’s a Family Affair

The 2023 American Junior Simbrah Roundup was dedicated to the Hebert and Bell families of Bell City, Louisiana. This annual award recognizes individuals and families that give their time and show strong support for the junior organization and the summer event. The Hebert and Bell families represent three generations of Simbrah breeders, and their cattle operation is truly a family affair.

Brandon and Mary Hebert, along with their daughter Brandi and husband, Keith and their two children, Charlee and Rylan represent the three generations at the present time. The Heberts, who recently celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary, started their married life in Mary’s hometown of Grand Chenier, Louisiana--right on the coast. Mary’s parents raised cattle and Brandon had worked for various cattlemen in high school. Once married, he began working offshore for Tenneco Oil, which later would become Chevron. Mary would have a 30-year career with the Louisiana Wildlife & Fisheries Department, retiring in 2008.

“We bought cattle of our own very early in our marriage and we ran them with Mary’s parents. Of course, with our location, these were Brahman cross cattle and we had different ear marks to denote ownership,” explained Brandon.

Once the Hebert’s daughter, Brandi, and her brother, Barrett, became of age to show, the emphasis of the herd changed. The Heberts purchased a small herd of registered Simmentals with plans to show home raised heifers. It was about the same time that a cousin began raising Simbrahs.

“We could see the difference. The Simbrahs outperformed

down here on the coast, so we began moving our Simmentals to Simbrahs and Brandi and Barrett would show many Simbrahs across the state,” Brandon recalled.

Then in 2005, Hurricane Rita hit, and their home parish of Cameron suffered immeasurable losses. Their homes and barns were lost. Thankfully, their cattle were at their present home location away from the flood waters of Hurricane Rita.

“Hurricane Rita took all Grand Chenier. We had nothing left, we had already purchased some land in Bell City, which is farther north. So, we moved a double-wide mobile home on it and began building a barn, fences and eventually our home. Brandi had graduated from high school and Barrett was a sophomore when the hurricane hit. He would go to school for two and a half days a week in Grand Lake in 20052006. There were so many students without schools so that was how it had to be done,” recalled Mary.

The cattle operation continued but there were so many more pressing things to take care of at that time. They began building their herd back, but for a while it was more a commercial oriented operation, but with Simbrah bulls.

Brandi was beginning her career as a paralegal when Hurricane Rita hit. Her offices were destroyed, and she was sent to the Bell City area to work in the firm’s offices there. She and her husband, Keith Bell, who also works offshore, were married in 2006.

They now have two children, Charlee and Rylan, who are

familiar faces in the Simbrah arenas of Louisiana, and of course at Roundup.

The rebuilding and relocating of their cowherd eventually was complete and that included registered Simbrah genetics.

“Keith and I had rodeoed, and we just knew our kids would rodeo, but it wasn’t for Charlee. She tried cheerleading, which Keith was dead set against. A trip to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo with my folks exposed her to showing and she’s never looked back,” explained Brandi.

At that Houston event, Brandon and Mary would buy a heifer for Charlee from the Frugés, also from Louisiana.

Fast forward to today. Between the Heberts and Bells, they run about 40 registered females and have genetics primarily from Smith Genetics, La Muñeca, Strack Farms, 6G Land & Cattle, Pine Ridge, and the Tortorice Family.

Brandon retired in 2017 and with more time to devote to the cowherd. AI is now part of their breeding program.

“We cull heavily on disposition. No three strikes and you’re out here. A cow is gone after one. We want our cattle to be docile, good milkers, low maintenance and since we are show oriented, phenotype is important,” described Brandon.

Mary adds that the Simbrah breed is perfect for southern Louisiana as they match the environment, are hardy, can resist all the insects and parasites and overall are maternally strong.

Now that Charlee and Rylan are showing, the Bells have also purchased registered Simbrahs and of course, the retired show heifers are part of the family herd.

In addition to Roundup, they show at all the Louisiana shows, have gone to two American Junior Simmental Association National Classics, and annually compete at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Bottom Left: The Herberts enjoy hunting. Here are some of their trophies taken in South Africa.

Bottom Left: At just 5 years old, River Hebert has a strong interest in the cattle program.

“Roundup has really been a positive experience for our kids. They have gained knowledge, developed speaking ability, confidence and just have a fun time,” explained Brandi, adding that showing has taught her children how to be responsible and provided a great friend group.

Charlee plays softball and competes in pageants, where the public speaking from the AJSR leadership contests has been extremely helpful. Rylan enjoys being on the farm, driving a tractor and playing baseball.

(CONTINUED ON PAGE 10)

The Heberts and Bells run their cattle together as a family and have about 40 Simbrah momma cows.

“Our operation(s) are only possible because of our family’s commitment. Keith works 14 days on and 14 off, so my dad claims he is ‘14 on and off’ too. Along with the responsibilities that come with owning cattle, my parents jump right in to help me get Charlee and Rylan to shows and events when Keith is working. It’s truly a family effort,” remarked Brandi.

When they are not doing grandparenting activities or taking care of cattle, the Heberts love to hunt and travel. The have hunted in several U.S. locations and South Africa and been tourists in Alaska, Yellowstone, Niagara Falls, Canada, the Smokey Mountains and in the Northeast. Some of their South Africa trophies include Black and Blue Wildebeests, Eland, Sable, Gemsbok, and wart hogs. They also hunt deer and ducks locally, as well as alligators.

“It’s a family event, as we all go back to the marshes in Grand Chenier the first of September each year to hunt alligators. Last year we had 125 in just two days and had used all our tags,” said Mary.

Their son, Barrett and his wife, Amelia have two daughters, River, and Isla. They live in Bell City, also. River is five years old and is already very interested in the cattle, so it appears this family affair with Simbrahs will be expanding soon.

Several Reasons for Slow

Herd Expansion

THE MID-YEAR CATTLE INVENTORY REPORT SHOWED THAT CATTLE NUMBERS CONTINUE TO GET SMALLER AND THERE IS NO SIGNIFICANT INDICATION OF HERD REBUILDING SO FAR. Despite sharply higher cattle prices this year, there is no data to suggest heifer retention or enough decrease in beef cow slaughter to initiate herd expansion, although the most recent weekly slaughter data are encouraging. The process thus far is considerably slower than the herd expansion after the drought in 2011-2013 pushed cattle inventories to a cyclical low in 2014. There are several reasons why producers are moving more slowly and cautiously thus far.

Continuing drought - This is still an issue in significant regions of cattle country. While drought is not likely causing a great deal of additional herd liquidation from a broader market perspective, it surely is preventing herd expansion in those drought-stricken areas.

Drought recovery - Pastures and ranges in locations recently emerged from drought need time to heal after 2-3 years of drought damage and stress. Hay supplies are depleted and must be replenished. Many regions are still vulnerable to redeveloping drought and there is uncertainty that forage production may remain restricted.

Financial Recovery - Many cattle operations have suffered from considerable financial stress from drought and high input costs. The short run needs to realize immediate returns from higher cattle prices may be causing continued heifer and cull cow sales for now.

Input Cost Uncertainty - High, and in many cases record high, input prices were a particular challenge in 2022. Record hay prices and elevated supplemental feed costs have had a huge impact in drought regions. Record or near-record high fertilizer, chemical and fuel costs have been a significant challenge for producers, especially in regions of introduced pastures. Though some input prices have moderated in 2023, input price uncertainty has producers reacting cautiously to higher cattle prices.

Interest Rates - Not only are input costs higher but sharply higher interest rates create a different economic climate that may temper the pace of herd expansion compared to the 2014-2019 period. Higher finance costs will be a much more significant factor as breeding heifer and cow costs rise in the coming months.

Producer Expectations - All the above factors contribute to the economic backdrop of the industry and become part of the producer expectations that are the key to herd rebuilding. Until enough cow-calf producers anticipate enough returns for a long enough period, herd expansion will be tempered. In the meantime, cattle supplies will continue to tighten. Market prices for calves and feeder cattle will continue to increase as the market provides more price incentives that will eventually strengthen producer expectations and jump -start herd expansion. That process is likely to begin in earnest in the remainder of 2023 and into 2024.

“I’m thankful for this recognition, but it takes a team to be successful in Extension,” says Martinez. “Here at UT, we have some of the best agents and specialists to collaborate with. Additionally, it takes a great team at home. Thanks to my wife, Vanessa, and two kids, Henry and Remington, for their support.”

Martinez has worked with UTIA for three and a half years and specializes in farm and financial management, livestock and meat economics, and policy. He enjoys the many opportunities to help producers and students grow.

Martinez earned a doctorate in agricultural economics from Texas A&M University, and his bachelors in agribusiness -ranch management from Texas A&M University- Kingsville.
