Martha-Ellen Tye Performing Arts Institute The Martha-Ellen Tye Performing Arts Institute epitomizes Iowa State’s landgrant mission of education and outreach.

These programs serve a broad spectrum of constituencies and audiences. The goals of the Institute are:

• to enhance the development of creativity in students through the performing arts.

• to assist in the career development of young artists by providing performance opportunities and educational experiences.

• to offer students at all educational levels the opportunity to interact directly with professional artists through master classes, workshops, lecture demonstrations and clinics.

In collaboration with the Iowa State Center’s Performing Arts Series, the Institute introduces students at all levels to the performing arts and serves over 15,000 students from pre-school to college age each year. Workshops and performances in the schools, master classes with professional artists, and school-time matinees at Stephens Auditorium are offered in the areas of music, theatre and dance.

Ms. Polera’s mastery and affection for the complete standard cellopiano repertory is well-known, as is her attention and dedication to the works of living composers. In recent seasons she performed Elliott Carter’s venerable Sonata for Cello and Piano on tour in Paris, New York and Philadelphia, along with new works by Lowell Liebermann and YCA composers Benjamin C.S. Boyle and Kenji Bunch to critical acclaim.

The late Martha-Ellen Tye is most remembered for her for charitable giving, embracing through her financial resources a philosophy that develops the “whole person – body, mind, and spirit.” Mrs. Tye devoted her life to making that philosophy possible for her community, her state, and her world.

Named Outstanding Individual Philanthropist in 1989 by the Iowa Chapter of the National Society of Fund-Raising Executives, Mrs. Tye established many new projects especially in two areas: keeping the arts alive and investing in youth. These interests influenced her giving from the creation of the Martha-Ellen Tye Playhouse in Marshalltown to becoming the lead donor in the renovation of the Iowa State Center’s Fisher Theater, named for Mrs. Tye’s brother, J.W. “Bill” Fisher.

For her generous gifts to Iowa State, Mrs. Tye received the ISU Foundation’s Order of the Knoll Campanile Award in 1997 recognizing her exemplary philanthropy and outstanding dedication.

NAREK HAKHNAZARYAN, cellist Armenian cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan’s powerful and poetic playing has propelled him to the First Prize and Gold Medal at the 2011 XIV International Tchaikovsky Competition. Already hailed a “seasoned phenom” (Washington Post) following his Kennedy Center debut, Mr. Hakhnazaryan’s 2011-2012 season brings his first New York concerto performance at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall as part of the Young Concert Artists gala with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s under Ryan McAdams and with the London Symphony and Mariinsky Orchestras under Maestro Valery Gergiev.

Mr. Hakhnazaryan has received scholarships from the Rostropovich Russian Performing Arts Fund which brought him concerts in Russia, Germany, Italy, Austria, France, Great Britain, Greece, Turkey and Canada. His prizes include First Prize in the 2006 Aram Khachaturian International Competition in Armenia and First Place in the 2006 Johansen International Competition for Young String Players.

NOREEN POLERA, pianist

Pianist Noreen Polera ranks among the most highly-regarded collaborative pianists and diverse chamber artists performing today. She maintains a career that has taken her to every major American music center and abroad to Europe, Russia, and Asian centers of Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and Seoul.
