The late Martha-Ellen Tye is most remembered for her for charitable giving, embracing through her financial resources a philosophy that develops the “whole person – body, mind, and spirit.” Mrs. Tye devoted her life to making that philosophy possible for her community, her state, and her world. Named Outstanding Individual Philanthropist in 1989 by the Iowa Chapter of the National Society of Fund-Raising Executives, Mrs. Tye established many new projects especially in two areas: keeping the arts alive and investing in youth. These interests influenced her giving from the creation of the Martha-Ellen Tye Playhouse in Marshalltown to becoming the lead donor in the renovation of the Iowa State Center’s Fisher Theater, named for Mrs. Tye’s brother, J.W. “Bill” Fisher. For her generous gifts to Iowa State, Mrs. Tye received the ISU Foundation’s Order of the Knoll Campanile Award in 1997 recognizing her exemplary philanthropy and outstanding dedication.
