Steppingstone envisions a more just and equitable world where all students can actualize the life-transforming benefits of a college degree.

from the president

2021: Resilience and Innovation This was a year to embrace change. That’s something we all know intimately. And yet, to think big and move forward, it’s important to draw from steady sources of resolve and momentum. For us, those constants were our shared vision for equity, our strong community ties, and our unwavering commitment to Scholars. Thank you for your enduring partnership. Yes, there were day-to-day changes that required our team to be elastic: delivering inperson programming whenever we could, identifying Scholars’ ever-changing needs, and maintaining quality programming to support them along the way. You helped us adapt quickly. Alongside the responsive changes each moment required, we made a point to prioritize long-term and purposeful changes, too. We moved forward with implementing our strategic plan—designed to increase our impact in Boston and nationally, and to strengthen Scholar engagement across their 12+ year journey to a college degree. You helped us think bigger. As part of the strategic plan, we introduced the Steppingstone Scholars Program (which I hope you’ll take the time to explore on page 7), building upon everything we've learned about college access and success over the past 30+ years. We found ways to innovate, which only made us stronger and better equipped to support Scholars than ever before. It is true every year, and it is true now: your steadfast partnership makes Steppingstone’s work possible. We are able to take action today with an eye on tomorrow, always thinking big and progressing toward our vision of a more just and equitable world… We can do this, because you are in our corner. Thank you, as always, for your important contribution to Life. Transforming. Results.

Kelly D. Glew President

from the board chair

2022: Persistence and Leadership I’m a firm believer in the value of leadership. To me, it means listening to your community, understanding needs, coordinating resources, and working together to do what’s right, even when it’s challenging—as an iterative cycle, over and over again. I know that you share this value, too. By partnering with Steppingstone, together we’ve made a statement: we believe in this organization as a leader in Boston, even the nation—and we are invested in preparing the next generation to make a difference. Talk with Steppingstone Alumni and you’ll hear common refrains: I care about my community. Here’s what I envision. I do what I do, because I’m motivated to make a change. Whether as an educator with Teach for America, as a doctor specializing in women’s health, as a senior advisor to the mayor—in any field or role—Steppingstone Alumni are leaders. Scholars, and all of us, have some incredible role models to look to. We owe it to the next generation to lead by example, especially toward our vision of a more just and equitable world. At Steppingstone, we have embarked upon a comprehensive racial equity action plan, encompassing every aspect of the organization, in an ongoing effort to assess and improve practices for equity with Scholars and Alumni at the center. Meanwhile, Steppingstone’s National Partnership for Educational Access (NPEA) impacts students and institutions across the nation. With more than 360 members in 37 states, NPEA connects the people, practices, and innovations essential for eliminating barriers to college and career success. Each workshop, resource, and discussion inspires people to affect change in their own institutions, step by step. Each and every impact we make, we make together, on a local and national scale. We could not do this work without you. Thank you for joining us in many years of leadership to come.

Robert P. Henderson, Jr. Board Chair

The Steppingstone Foundation

College Access. College Success. Here for the whole journey. College access is about more than test scores, applications, and financial resources—just as college success is about more than passing exams and earning a diploma. Even these aspects, on their own, are demanding. Students are often challenged to find a way through complex systems, navigating the culture and power dynamics of each learning environment, and defining personal values and goals—all while balancing many priorities including mental and physical health. This can be an intensely challenging journey—particularly if parts of your identity are historically underrepresented in higher education, or you are the first in your family to attend college. And that doesn’t include the challenges presented by a global pandemic.

Prior to the pandemic, Steppingstone had conducted an internal evaluation of its two programs, The Steppingstone Academy and the College Success Academy, as part of a larger, organization-wide strategic plan. While we have carefully honed our program services over the past 30 years, it felt like an opportune time to examine these services more carefully, within the context of Boston’s ever-changing educational landscape, and with the goal of providing even more support to Scholars. As a result of this 18-month process, we found that we could increase our impact and better utilize our resources by merging the two programs into one. Over the course of 2019 and 2020, we incorporated the strengths of the two original programs into the newly named Steppingstone Scholars Program which launched in July 2021.

“It seems like it would just be a program to help you learn, to further yourself and only about school. I bet you don’t know that Steppingstone is a whole second family to you.” — Elainny Guzman, Steppingstone Scholar

7

What’s new in this new program iteration? The goal in combining our two former college access programs—The Steppingstone Academy and College Success Academy—was to leverage the unique strengths of each program, accommodating a wider range of “next school” choices among middle and high school students, and expanding and deepening support for Scholars. This new iteration of our program model launched in July, and all 1,400 Scholars in grades 5 through college transitioned into the program at that time. For the vast majority of Scholars, the new program feels like a name change with additional services and opportunities. The foundation of our program model remains the same. We continue to:

We have reallocated resources and made new investments that have resulted in:

• • •

recruit fourth- and fifth-graders from all over Boston provide engaging after-school and summer programming that accelerates Scholars’ learning and supports their social-emotional growth guide Scholars and families through the process of identifying, applying to, and selecting a school that will lead to college, and stay with them through middle school, high school, and college to ensure that Scholars achieve their goal of earning a college degree.

• •

reduced Advisor caseloads, providing more opportunities for increased Scholar engagement throughout their 12+ years in the program expanded social-emotional offerings in response to the growing mental health needs of young people restructured programming in middle and high school to target the academic and developmental needs of Scholars in these age groups and to better support key transitions, such as into a new school, high school, and college redefining what it means to be a partner school and working with a wider range of schools committed to ensuring college success for students from historically marginalized communities.

Steppingstone’s programming is designed to support the whole child, through adolescence and young adulthood.

8 The Steppingstone Foundation

Navigating the Pandemic During the 2020–21 academic year, Steppingstone provided all of our services to Scholars virtually. This was due to a combination of public health restrictions and specific restrictions at our academic year program site that is located in a Boston public school. When the pandemic ebbed in spring 2021, our program staff was anxious to get back to in-person programming with Scholars and had the opportunity to do so at our summer program site. We offered the Academy summer program as a hybrid model, with 25% of students in grades 5 and 6 attending virtually, based on individual family preference. This fall, we were again restricted from offering in-person programming at our academic year program site and returned to virtual academic classes for younger Scholars in the Academy. However, we were able to find alternative program space at a charter school so that Scholars in Middle School Success could meet in person on Saturdays. Because Steppingstone’s High School Success and College Success advising and activities have proven to be effective in virtual format (sometimes even increasing attendance), both divisions have primarily offered virtual meetings and workshops this fall. In High School Success, there were opportunities for selected in-person activities such as fall campus tours, and we plan to add back more in the future. 2021 Annual Report of Giving

Start the journey here:

Admission Steppingstone recruits Boston students in grades 4 and 5 who demonstrate motivation, academic potential, and a need for our services. Most Scholars learn about the program from their Boston public school teachers. Prospective Scholars and families must attend an information meeting, apply, and complete an interview.

Academy Steppingstone provides a rigorous and engaging academic and social-emotional curriculum after school and over as many as three summers. Beginning the summer before fifth or sixth grade, the Academy accelerates Scholars' academic skills, supports their socialemotional development, and prepares them to gain admission to schools that lead to college.

Steppingstone’s curriculum includes: • Core academic subjects such as math, English, science, Latin, and social studies • Physical education, electives, and community building • Development of social emotional skills including a healthy sense of self, emotional resiliency, social awareness, relationship building, and more • Preparation for school entrance exams

While in the Academy, Steppingstone Advisors support Scholars and their families in identifying, applying to, and gaining admission to right-fit schools that lead to college. 10

The Steppingstone Foundation

Following completion of the Academy, Scholars transition into Scholar Support Services. Advisors provide programming for Scholars through middle school, high school, and college to ensure that Scholars thrive in their schools and are on track for college graduation.
