Steppingstone FY23 Annual Report

2023 ANNUAL REPORT

Steppingstone envisions a more just and equitable world where all students can actualize the life-transforming benefits of a college degree.

Milestones on the Journey to College Success

At the close of our 2023 fiscal year, I am moved by what a year it was for Scholars, their families, and our entire community. As you’ll see in the following pages, we are more than 1,000 individuals strong, united in a common belief that all students should have access to a college education. These pages are a tribute to you—for making another year of Steppingstone possible, together.

I am also moved to reflect personally, having spent more than 30 years of my career with Steppingstone. Each day, I have the privilege of working to expand college access and success with a dedicated community just as passionate about this as I am.

Our unity is most vital in the face of challenges. In the last year, we’ve watched obstacles to college access evolve and even increase. After so many commitments made to advance racial equity in 2020, we now encounter a wave of censorship that would silence necessary dialogue about the need for our work, along with the rolling back of resources our communities once counted on.

What has gotten me up in the morning, this year and for the past 30 years, is at the heart of what connects all of us. We do what we do for Scholars.

One day brings a new fifth grader brimming with excitement to join our program. Another day brings a towering college senior, beaming with a diploma in hand. It only takes a moment, and I can see the fifth grader I met 12 years ago in his eyes. (Head to page 7 for a glimpse of the awe I feel.)

The journey to college success is marked by many such milestones. Scholars remember where they were, what they were doing, and the way their mom reacted when they found out they were accepted to Steppingstone. Scholars celebrate their completion of the Berylson Family Academy in their first summers, knowing they worked hard and are ready to take on a new and academically challenging school. They mark the wins of completing middle school, taking the SATs, and getting into college—along with friends made, band concerts performed, and sports played in between—ultimately walking across the stage they have dreamed of.

When we asked a sixth grade Scholar to imagine that moment recently, the flash of a smile told it all. “It’s going to mean, I did it. I reached my goal and I’m finally who I want to be… I’m going to feel so much pride for accomplishing that goal.”

Friends, you keep this dream alive and you help make it a reality, every year. Please accept our deepest gratitude, this year and always.

2023 Annual Report of Giving 3 From the President

From the Board Chair The Journey Begins With You

When Scholars join Steppingstone, it’s often because they have a teacher who saw something special in them and nominated them for the program. It’s because they have a family member who believes in the power of a college education and will do anything to help them on that path. It’s because they know a dedicated Steppingstone Advisor is waiting in the wings, ready to provide the support they need.

And, they have you. You and so many others who make sure Steppingstone remains possible. Not just possible, but strong.

This year, we were able to count on you to provide the space, transportation, technology, learning materials, and team of dedicated staff necessary to deliver our programs. We rely on individual giving for about 70% of our annual budget, and you truly made our work possible.

On page 29, we celebrate the more than 100 Alumni who help keep Steppingstone alive for the Scholars of today—including the 15 Alumni who serve on our boards, as well as D’Lynn Jacobs ’97, who gave in memory of her mother this year. She wrote, “I pay it forward because of all she poured into me, and all that I know the graduating Scholars will pour into future Scholars too…Philanthropy can be love in action.”

The act of giving is truly an act of love. Every gift, of every size, tells a story. Whether in honor or in memory, an annual ritual or a monthly commitment, it’s a strong statement about what one believes and envisions for the future.

For all the unique stories behind the names in these pages, this much is clear across the board:

We envision a more just and equitable world.

We believe all students should have access to the life-transforming benefits of a college degree.

We believe in Scholars.

We believe in Steppingstone.

Thank you for being our partner in this essential work.

With over 30 years of experience, our results are proven.
